Wooden fence with their own hands. How to make a fence from various types of boards with your own hands

How to make a wooden fence for a private house with your own hands

- step by step instructions!

Timber, boards and screws. What can be done with such a modest set of materials? Build a fence! Wooden fences undeservedly faded into the background. And absolutely in vain! Of course, in terms of stability and reliability, the fence made of boards significantly loses to its brick and concrete counterparts, but a minimum of time, effort and money is spent on the construction of a wooden fence.

DIY wooden fence

At the same time, you can handle all the necessary activities on your own. By showing a little imagination and doing everything according to the instructions, you will create a truly original and interesting design.

What to build a fence from?

Before proceeding with the construction of the fence, we pay due attention to the choice of source material. For the arrangement of the fence we use only high-quality dense wood. The wood of oak, aspen, ash, Siberian larch, alder, mulberry is perfect.

Types of wood

Among all the listed options, the most interesting is the Siberian larch. A fence built from it will serve as long as possible. If one of the main enemies of most wood species is moisture, then larch only becomes stronger from contact with water.

Larch

Planed larch board

We limit the use of pine except for the arrangement of the fence shield, in case of breakage or wear of the fence, such material can be replaced without much financial cost and effort.

Fence - pine

Important! And in no case do we use birch for the construction of the fence - it is extremely unstable and short-lived.

It is also important to choose a quality material for the manufacture of supports. With wooden spans, wooden poles will be best combined. You can either dig them into the ground or attach them to special metal stands (consoles) concreted in pre-created recesses.

Important! To extend the life of wood, it must first be impregnated with an antiseptic. It will reduce the intensity of the harmful effects of moisture, air, fungus and other harmful microorganisms on the building material.

Wood preservatives

To fix the effect, it is recommended to treat the wood with a special dye, for example, Swedish paint. It will give the material a very beautiful shade. If desired, a dye of a different color can be applied over the dried Swedish paint.

swedish paint

To prepare Swedish paint, we need:

  • copper sulfate - 250 g;
  • salt - 250 g;
  • iron minium - 250 g;
  • drying oil - 230 ml;
  • flour - 570 g;
  • water - about 4.5 liters.

Following the given proportions, you can prepare any required amount of dye.

swedish paint

The paint is quite economical. About 200-250 ml of dye is spent on covering 1 m2 of surface. The above recipe allows you to prepare a golden color paint. If you want to get a different shade, replace the minium with manganese peroxide, ocher, or another component of your choice.

Swedish paint is prepared in the following order:

  • paste is cooked. To prepare it, stir the flour in 3 liters of water;
  • the finished paste is passed through a sieve - this allows you to remove lumps from the mixture;
  • strained paste is again put on fire. Salt and copper sulfate are added to the mixture. Constantly stir the mixture, achieving complete dissolution of vitriol;
  • while continuing to stir the paste, add drying oil to it, and then pour in a certain amount of water (usually about 1.5 l) until a homogeneous liquid composition is obtained.

We apply the finished paint to the wood in a double layer.

Table. How to paint a wooden fence

Step by step guide to building a wooden fence

Types of wooden fence

Fence scheme

Let's start building our fence.

First step. We take several wooden pegs about 600 mm long and sharpen the lower edge of each of them.

Second step. We drive in pegs with a two-meter step along the perimeter of the site, at the place where the fence is installed.

markup

Third step. We loop the driven pegs with a rope, pulling it quite strongly between the stakes.

Fourth step. Determine the desired height of the fence. At this point, we focus on our preferences and terrain features. On average, the height of wooden fences is kept within 150-250 cm.

Decide on the height of the fence

Fifth step. We cut or order boards of the required length. In this example, we will mount the boards vertically. If you wish, you can perform horizontal trim - the procedure will remain approximately the same.

Sixth step. We carefully sand the boards, impregnate them with an antiseptic, and after it dries, apply a double layer of Swedish paint (you can use another product at your discretion).

You can buy pre-finished boards if you wish, but they are much more expensive than raw material. Do as you please.

Seventh step. We take out the driven pegs and drill the holes remaining from them to a depth of 0.5 m. Optimally - 60-80 cm. For the rest, be guided by the dimensions of the future fence and the weight of the structure.

Now take out the pegs one at a time, and in place of the remaining holes, drill wells at least 50 cm deep under the fence supports

Eighth step. We insert wooden supports pre-impregnated with an antiseptic into the recesses, carefully aligning them vertically.

A wooden bar with a section of 7.5 x 7.5 cm or 10 x 10 cm will perfectly cope with the function of supporting pillars. For small and light fences, you can use posts with a section of 5 x 5 cm.

It is better to pre-tar the buried part of the timber so that the wood does not rot.

Ninth step. Fill the holes with concrete. If a compact fence is being erected, you can limit yourself to filling the holes with earth with careful tamping.

We insert wooden supports pre-impregnated with an antiseptic into the recesses.

Tenth step. We drive a nail into the upper end of each pillar and tighten all the supports with a rope around the perimeter of the structure. In the future, we will be able to navigate along this rope and carry out the sheathing of the fence as evenly and efficiently as possible.

We drive a nail into the upper end of each column and tighten all the supports with a rope along the perimeter of the structure

Eleventh step. We begin to attach horizontal veins to the supports. To do this, we use a board 100 mm wide and 25 mm thick. We fix the veins with the same step (about 25-30 cm), stepping back the same distance from the bottom of the ground.

We begin to attach horizontal veins to the supports

To fasten the boards, we use screws or nails of such length that the fasteners completely pass through the vein and protrude from the back of the support column by 20-30 mm. The protruding part of each screw or nail is carefully and carefully bent.

First board nailed

Fastening boards

Twelfth step. Using screws, we attach the sheathing boards to the veins. If desired, instead of boards, you can use logs - you get a fence in a rustic style. Having painted the logs, you will create an original composition, the analogues of which are unlikely to be seen by any of the neighbors.

If you need to get a "deaf" fence, we nail the boards close to each other. If desired, you can leave 10-50 mm gaps between the hedge elements - as you wish.

In the process of fastening the boards, we focus on the cord stretched from above. If necessary, saw off the excess length of the sheathing elements to get a beautiful and even hedge.

In conclusion, we just have to cover the fence with paint of the desired color. If you are satisfied with the shade of Swedish paint, no additional painting work is needed.

We paint the fence, if we have not done it before

Non-standard methods of fixing boards

Does the simple vertical fastening of boards seem too primitive and boring to you? No problem, there are many more interesting solutions!

For example, you can assemble a fence according to the wattle principle. Boards are attached in a bent state. Trying to straighten up, they will fit snugly enough against the supporting pillars.

Another great option is to fill the space between the supports with wood siding. We fasten the sheathing boards, starting from the bottom, withstanding a 25 mm overlap.

The fences made in the form of blinds look no less original. By laying the boards with a downward slope towards the street, you will create an invisible fence that is resistant to wind loads.

Fence-shutters

Fence-shutters

Also, the boards can be nailed from the end. To perform the highest quality sheathing, we first make markings on each rack.

In the case of installing metal poles, they can be hidden by sheathing the racks on both sides. From above, we close the metal supports with wooden plugs.

If desired, you can make the fence more original and on wooden support posts. We make inclined grooves in the supports, and then insert the ends of the lamellas into them. Additionally, we fasten each bar with self-tapping screws. To hide the attachment points, we close the screws with wooden plates. We crown the upper part of the supports with plugs.

To make the fence look more original and modern, we can fill the boards with a small gap (up to 15 mm). At the same time, the narrower the boards will be (of course, within reasonable limits), the more interesting the design of the fence will turn out.

You can also use boards of different widths. When choosing this sheathing method, be sure to make sure that the pattern on adjacent sections matches.

There are a lot of options for decorating a wooden fence. Choose the one you like and start building the fence. You already have all the knowledge necessary for this.

Successful work!

How to build a wooden fence with your own hands

Wood, despite the emergence of a variety of modern materials, still does not lose its relevance. In our material, we will analyze how to build a wooden fence with your own hands and what are its main advantages.

Wood for construction - pros and cons

Wood is quite inexpensive and at the same time very convenient in processing and further decorating material, which is quite often used for arranging barriers. Despite the appearance of a dozen other building materials, wood will not lose its fans for the following reasons:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • excellent decorative properties;
  • simple processing;
  • simple installation;
  • a wide range of textures;
  • relatively low cost compared to other materials used to build fences.

Wood is a natural product that will be ideally combined with other materials and will harmoniously fit into any design solution you choose. In addition, for the construction of the fence you will need literally a couple of working hands and the presence of a minimum tool.

But even here it is not without disadvantages, which include:

  • fire hazard of the material;
  • low level of resistance to various climatic factors;
  • the tree is very fond of pests;
  • the service life is noticeably different, for example, from brick fences, and averages about 10 years.

To partially compensate for a number of shortcomings, it is worth treating the tree with an antiseptic or other means that repel pests.

It should also be protected from moisture, temperature fluctuations. For example, to protect the upper part of the fence from decay, you can close it with special rubber plugs, and to protect the lower part, the fence should be installed at a height of at least 15 cm from the ground level.

Variety and types of fences

The choice of design of the fence will depend on the purpose of the fence:

  • border marking;
  • protection of the territory;
  • reduction of noise, wind loads;
  • fencing hazardous areas.

So the design could be:

  • deaf;
  • lattice;
  • combined.

Also, do not forget about the design of the site. The fence must necessarily fit into the landscape, harmoniously combined with a variety of objects of the territory.

At the moment, the most popular construction options listed below.

Classic

This is a solid or ventilated structure based on metal or wooden supports. Its crossbars are made of wooden beams, the lining is made of edged boards.

Fence

The cladding is represented by a picket fence - a thin bar that can be mounted either vertically or horizontally.

Lattice

Sheathing is presented in the form of strips (battens), which are installed vertically crosswise, and the products can be installed either closely or with a small clearance. Mounting in groups of rails to create a pattern is possible.

Ladder

The fencing elements are installed overlapping or with a small clearance, and the boards are rotated using calibrated spacers.

Network

The canvas of such a fence is presented in the form of vine branches or planks that braid the “ribs” of the frame. This type of fencing is quite difficult to install, but at the same time provides excellent resistance to external factors.

Palisade

Represented by a solid canvas of logs. Such a fence is very difficult to break and overcome, which means that it provides high-quality protection of the territory.

Ranch

The canvas of this type of fence consists of crossbars, which are fastened with lags located diagonally. Most often, such a fence is used on farms, as it allows you to protect the borders of a private house from the penetration of large livestock.

Moreover, in practice, combined structures are often found, which not only improves the appearance of the fence, but also increases its stability.

DIY wooden fence - step by step instructions

The construction of the fence is conditionally divided into the following stages:

  1. Support installation.
  2. Installation of crossbars.
  3. Frame sheathing.

Let's take a closer look at all the stages, because only when each of them is completed in full, it is possible to achieve maximum stability of the structure.

Installation of support poles

It is best to carry out these works by backfilling. The execution algorithm will be as follows:

  1. We make holes for the supports: depth - about 150 cm, diameter - 50 cm. To do this, it is best to use a garden drill and a crowbar.
  2. We lay out sand at the bottom, we ram. Moreover, the layer of sand should be at least 15 cm.
  3. We install a support post in the center of the pit, once again we ram the sand.
  4. We fall asleep a mixture of sand and gravel to a height of about 25 cm, we ram.
  5. We check the evenness of the support.
  6. Once again we repeat the procedure for falling asleep sand, gravel, again we ram.
  7. These steps must be repeated until the mixture reaches the top of the well.

To make the mixture denser lay down, you need to slightly moisten it with water.

Installation of transverse logs

For mounting transverse logs, it is best to use brackets. The work algorithm is as follows:

  1. For each support, use several fasteners.
  2. Logs are made in two segments about 12 cm long, at the end of each of them you need to make holes for installing bolted connections.
  3. Holes are made at the end of each beam (the main thing is that they match those that are drilled on the corner).
  4. We retreat about 40 cm from the top of the column, mark it with a dot, weld the first part of the corner, turning it down.
  5. We retreat about 5 cm more, weld the corner, turning it up.
  6. We retreat down about 1 m, we also mount the bottom bracket.
  7. We install the guides using self-tapping screws for wood.

It should be noted that the distance between the transverse lags can be reduced. But in this case, the fence will become less durable. Also remember that the support itself should rise above the skin by at least 10 cm, above the ground - at least 15 cm.

Frame sheathing

Before installing the boards themselves, you need to choose one of the methods. For example, there is a method when the fence is mounted on logs before they are installed on supports. The instruction is as follows:

  1. We expose the transverse logs at the required distance. It is best to use coasters for this, making them from any material at hand.
  2. We expose the lower and upper edges of the canvas, be sure to use a ruler or building level.
  3. Using wood screws, we mount the boards on the logs.
  4. We fix the finished canvas with brackets.

It is worth noting that it will be very difficult to do this work alone, therefore you cannot do without an assistant.

There is a second installation method, which involves the installation of each board. This process will be longer, labor-intensive, since it is necessary to check the distance between the boards, their evenness.

In our article, we will step by step analyze how to make a wicker fence for fencing a summer cottage.

Here you will learn in detail about the creation of a garden path of stones.

With the help of adapters for a walk-behind tractor, gardening and garden work can be simplified. Here we will tell you how to make it yourself.

Protecting and finishing the structure

Since the fence will be in the open air for a whole year, it must be protected from moisture, temperature fluctuations, and other influences.

Do not forget to protect any metal elements, such as bolted connections. Before installation, prime and paint them. The legs of the pillars no less need protection in the form of waterproofing with bitumen or roofing material.

In addition to moisture, the structure is also threatened by ultraviolet radiation, which accelerates the oxidation of the material, leads to the evaporation of moisture, as a result of which the fence loses both its attractive appearance and its bearing capacity. To prevent premature wear when impregnating, add UV hardeners to the liquid.

The impregnating composition must be applied in several layers, first treating the wood with a deep penetration primer. After drying, cover the fence with paint or varnish. It should be noted that any impregnation leads to a change in the color of the wood, which should be taken into account.

Be sure to check the condition of the fence. If the slightest damage appears, you should immediately begin to eliminate them, which will extend the life of the structure. Speaking about the choice of design method, it is necessary to take into account both the surrounding landscape and your personal preferences.

For example, the finished structure can be decorated with forging, using unusual impregnations, decorating the fence with stones or other elements.

How to build a wooden fence with your own hands

A strong fence around the house is an important necessity. A high fence not only protects property, but creates a sense of psychological comfort.

Wooden fences have always been considered the ideal fencing option. They are made of pure ecological materials and are quite simple in self-construction. Properly built and well maintained wooden fences can last up to four decades.

What are wooden fences

All products of this type can be divided into two large groups:

  1. hedge. It consists of wooden boards that are attached to poles. Pillars in such a situation play the role of a reliable support. There are different options for decorating a hedge: it can be interesting drawings, wood carvings. Boards can be fixed both horizontally and vertically.

    wooden fence

  2. Palisade is a fence consisting of stakes. They need to be driven into the ground very tightly to each other. To give the fence additional strength, the stakes are reinforced with transverse poles. A large consumption of wood is the main disadvantage of this type of fencing.

    classic palisade

Considering wooden fences by design, the following options are available:

  1. Fence. This design is the most popular. Vertical boards are taken, which are nailed to the crossbars. As a result, a picket fence span is formed. Its upper part can be of different shapes to give the fence an additional decorative effect.

    picket fence

  2. Wattle. This type of fence is woven from the shoots of trees or shrubs.

    wicker fence

  3. bamboo hedge. This fence is made from dry bamboo. Young stems can intertwine with each other and attach to supports that are pre-punched. Such a fence looks very beautiful, but it is short-lived and has a high cost.

What kind of wood to make a fence

Experts advise using coniferous trees. It may larch or spruce, cedar, pine. It should be borne in mind that pine is not very durable.

In principle, any type of wood is suitable for a wooden fence, the main thing is that it be of high quality. If you want to save money, then you can safely take spruce or pine.

Before use, the wood must be well treated with an antiseptic with olive.

We will need:

Wooden fence-blinds

Do-it-yourself step-by-step construction of a wooden fence

Stage #1

Wooden pegs are taken about 60 cm in length. Everyone needs to be sharpened. Then the site plan is taken, and the pegs are hammered around the entire perimeter of the territory.

The distance between them should be in the region of two meters from each other.

Then the pegs must be looped with lacing. It needs to be well stretched.

Marking the territory for supports

Stage #2

It is necessary to determine the required height of the fence. It is important that it is not too high (because it can obscure the planting) or too low (so as not to put the site on display). Optimal the average height is considered to be 1.5-2.5 meters.

The boards are cut to the designated length. They will need to be processed on a grinding machine and made into a semicircular or triangular profile. If you need to save time, you can buy ready-made boards.

Stage 3

There comes a moment when the pegs are removed one at a time, and in their place a well is drilled with a depth of about 50-80 cm under the supports for the future fence. To make the work go faster, it is better to do it using a drill. If there is no access to the drill, then the holes can be made with an ordinary shovel.

Drilling a hole for poles

Stage 4

Pre-prepared supports can now be dug into the ground. Bars can be with a section of 50 * 50 mm or 75 * 75 mm. It is necessary to install the bars strictly vertically, for great accuracy it is recommended to use a plumb line. The wells are covered with earth and compacted tightly. To consolidate the results of the work and make the fence durable, supports must be cemented.

Stage number 5

On top of each beam, a nail is hammered, and they are pulled together along the perimeter with a tightly stretched lacing. This must be done in order to level the fence.

Stage #6

The veins (section 10 * 2.5 cm) are attached to the beams with nails. They must be placed at the same distance from each other. This is done at a height of about 20-30 cm above the soil level. The nails must be of the right size to penetrate the veins and protrude a few centimeters from the back. The protruding parts of the nails must be carefully bent.

An approximate drawing of a wooden fence for building with your own hands

Stage number 7

Boards prepared for the fence are nailed to the nails. If you want to make a deaf fence, then the boards are nailed end-to-end. You can also leave a small distance between them from one to five centimeters.

Wood fence painting and finishing

The stages of installation of a wooden fence are completed, but there is still a lot of work ahead. It is necessary to protect the wooden fence from bad weather and insects. For this, special measures are taken, in particular - processing and painting.

As a protective material, experts recommend using ordinary drying oil. This tool is common and available at its cost. If finances allow, then the hardware stores offer many options for stronger and more expensive tree protection.

After the applied protective layer dries, you can start painting.

For this, special paints for wood are selected, which are presented in a wide range on modern construction markets. This combination: drying oil and special paint will protect the fence from the sun and moisture.

It is important! Painting a wooden fence should be repeated once every two, maximum three years.

Wooden fences have many advantages - environmental friendliness of the material and beautiful appearance, reliable protection and long service life. In order for a tree to fully reveal these qualities, it is necessary to properly mount the fence and, without fail, protect the wood with drying oil and paint.

How to extend the life of a wooden fence

For additional protection from rain and snow, many professionals recommend installing a special visor on the top of the fence. To do this, you will need to install special additional strips on which the visor can be attached.

Installing such a visor is a painstaking and time-consuming task, but the product can protect the tree from moisture as much as possible, and the appearance of the fence will become more original and individual.

To protect the bottom of the fence, you must constantly:

  • Remove excess grass. A lot of vegetation near the fence leads to increased humidity. This can cause early rotting of the tree.
  • After removing excess grass, a thin layer of gravel is poured along the fence. This will allow excess moisture not to accumulate in this place.

Decorative wooden fence-lattice

How Extend the life of your wood fence still under construction:

  • Make sure that there are no anthills and large thickets in the installation site.
  • Impregnate the wood with special antiseptics even before the start of construction.
  • Upon completion of installation, coat the entire structure with a primer. This will strengthen the fence and provide excellent protection from adverse weather conditions. You can make a primer only in warm weather, when the tree is completely dry.
  • An additional primer is done using paint, which includes natural oils. This doubles the strength of the material. A layer of oil paint should dry for about 24 hours before applying a second one. Then the material will be well impregnated.

When the materials are prepared, there are tools, as well as free time, building a wooden fence with your own hands is a task that even a beginner in construction can do. But it is important not only to install the fence correctly, but also to provide it with constant care and protection. Then the wooden fence will last up to forty-five years.

Step-by-step video instructions for building a wooden fence

On the video - self-construction of a wooden fence:

Photo gallery of various wooden fences

The photo shows examples of the implementation of various decorative and unusual wooden fences installed in a summer cottage. Some of the ideas can help you choose your own solutions.

Fences made of wood are considered the most short-lived. After all, not everyone knows (or does not want to know) the secrets of wood and its processing.

An untreated pine fence will indeed last no more than 10 years, and even then, provided that the lower part of the pillar is waterproofed. If you are making a temporary fence for the period of construction and improvement, then this is a completely justified decision.

Another thing is when wood is chosen as a building material not because of its cheapness, but because of the possibilities of design. After all, wood is considered the most malleable material for decorative processing.

This is what the fence looks like from the first photo from the side of the yard. Agree, no less attractive ...

Pay attention to the outline of the boards: how much "attention" was paid to each of them, how carefully the edges are worked out and the corners are smoothed... The photo shows the sliding gates of the same yard.

And how many design techniques exist: firing, tinting, the effect of aging, combining with forged overlays, and finally, just perfect grinding and coating with yacht varnish.

Design options for wooden fences are given at the end of the article.

Having invested labor (or money) in the creation of a masterpiece of wooden architecture, I want to admire it for as long as possible. Therefore, there are a number of important points that the owner of the estate should know.

LONGEVITY Pledge

Choose for the fence those wood species that are distinguished by high density: Siberian larch, oak, mulberry, acacia, aspen, alder, ash. By the way, a Siberian larch fence can be called eternal - from contact with water, the wood of this tree, on the contrary, grows stronger.

Limit the use of pine to the creation of a fence board - in case of rapid wear, it is not difficult to replace it. In no case do not put a birch fence - it has the most unstable wood.

support poles for a wooden fence can be wooden, metal or made of masonry.

The last two options will serve as a reliable support for many years to come. But do not write off the tree. It doesn't have to be buried in the ground.

To extend the service life, you can use special metal consoles (supports), which are concreted, and then a wooden bar is attached to them (see link on the side).

The most vulnerable part sawn wood - one where the cut is made across the grain. To extend the life of a wooden fence will help the horizontal arrangement of boards or a protective visor over those standing vertically.

Wood is vulnerable when it comes into direct contact with air: it swells and is affected by fungus when wet, and too dry contributes to its cracking. You can reduce the risks due to the mandatory treatment: impregnation with an antiseptic plus painting with special dyes (Swedish paint, yacht varnish, impregnation with hot drying oil).

SWEDISH PAINT
  • iron (copper) vitriol - 260 g,
  • iron minium - 260 g,
  • table salt - 260 g,
  • rye flour - 580 g,
  • drying oil or linseed oil - 240 ml,
  • water - about 4.5 liters.

The consumption of the composition is approximately 200-300 ml/m 2 . Color - golden. If you need a different shade, then red lead can be replaced with ocher or manganese peroxide.

The coloring composition is prepared as follows: the flour is mixed with 3 liters of water and the paste is boiled, passed through a sieve to avoid lumps, put on fire again and add ferrous sulfate and salt, stirring constantly until the vitriol is completely dissolved, continuing to stir, pour in small portions first oil (linseed oil) then water (until a liquid homogeneous consistency is obtained).

Apply the paint immediately, because it thickens quickly. Therefore, it is better to work with two or three people, or divide the composition into smaller portions and cook it as it is spent.

WOODEN FENCE FRAME

The step of the supporting pillars is 2-3 m.

As supports, choose a round or square bar with a section of 100x100 mm or a metal pipe with a section of 40x40, 40x60, 60x60 mm (with a wall thickness of 2 mm), for gates 80x80 and 100x100 mm (with a wall thickness of 3 mm). The wider the pitch of the supports and the greater the load (weight and wind), the greater the size and thickness of the walls.

So for a fence-blinds with a two-meter section, the minimum parameters from the above are chosen, for a solid one, and even with forged overlays - the maximum.

If there is no choice of lumber (wood species), then the budget pine is carefully treated with protective chemistry, and the posts must be installed on a concrete base.

For horizontal crossbars, a bar with a section of 30 (enough) x 50 (and wider) mm is used.

For mounting wooden crossbars on a metal pole, "ears" with holes for fasteners are welded to it. To avoid welding during installation, you can purchase ready-made posts with fasteners.

A board 25 mm thick goes to the skin (shield). The width varies depending on the design.

The rest of the technological sequence, the depth and method of laying, up to the chemical treatment of the frame, is the same as for the fence from corrugated board:

  • frame is mounted
  • color,
  • after stuffing the shield.

METHOD OF FASTENING THE FRAME AND BOARDS

The most durable will be the connection with self-tapping screws. Choose self-tapping screws, taking into account such a requirement: the body of a wooden pole (crossbar) should include 30-40 mm of thread.

Each board is fixed with at least two screws on each edge.

There are options for a non-standard approach to fastening boards. Here is an example of a fence assembled according to the wattle principle. The curved board, trying to straighten itself, is pressed tightly against the support. Although, given the pliability of wood in a humid environment, additional fixation of each board will still have to be done.

For the fence in the photo above, we used the method of sheathing with wooden siding. Start fastening the boards from the bottom up with an overlap of 2.5 cm.

An interesting novelty is a woodenFENCE-SHUTTER.

If the boards are made with a downward slope towards the street, then an invisible fence will be obtained that will not experience strong wind loads. There are several ways to fix the boards at an angle.

In the photo on the right, wooden lamellas are nailed to a gear rack, which, in turn, is fixed to a support post.

Another way- nail the boards from the end. It is important to clearly mark the wooden rack. This option is relevant for a fence with metal supports. When all sections are filled along the front and back, a board is nailed that will cover the entire "kitchen". A wooden plug must be put on top of the pole.

Are you interested in the question of how to mount the next section if the neighboring section restricts access to it? It is simply slightly pushed out first towards the street, after - the site (or vice versa) in order to fix the lamella. Fastening to a metal support is carried out after the installation of adjacent sections.

Third option for wooden beam support. In it, oblique cut-grooves are made, into which the end of the lamellas is inserted. Each must be screwed with a self-tapping screw, and then a wooden lining is made from the front part, which will hide the attachment points.

In the end, the wooden blinds fence will look like this. Don't forget to nail the end caps to the top of the post.

Simple horizontal fastening of boards looks boring. But if you make small (up to 1.5 cm) gaps between them, then the canvas of the section will acquire a more modern sound. How at the same board (within reason), the more interesting and modern the finished fence looks.

It’s also nice to alternate boards of different widths - the main thing is that adjacent sections repeat the pattern.

Do not ignore the unedged board. In addition to being cheaper, it also looks more exclusive. The truth is not suitable for all styles of site design. It will look win-win in the forest.

Here is another option for a brutal style wooden fence.

You will need a jigsaw, a wood carving knife, sanding paper and skillful hands in order to make such an original fence with the effect of a time-worn board.

Have you ever collected puzzles? So, to create these fence sections (pictured above), you first need to draw and carve them from the boards. Each plank of this fence has its own clear size and bend, that is, first they create a template, then they cut it out, chamfer it, grind it, and treat it with protective chemistry. And only after they are knocked down into the section. And how the elements are fixed to each other is the secret of the master ...

For the slab fence in the photo above, the entire wane was carefully selected, because it is unacceptable for some sections of the boards to be too thin in thickness. The bark was removed, each plank was given piquant contours with a jigsaw, the surface was polished. In general, the cheap price of the material is covered by painstaking work.

I recommend copying this design exactly in relation to the original, or first create a project (span diagram) of the entire fence, choosing an alternation of drawings. And only after making sure that the whole canvas of the fence looks harmonious, proceed to implementation.

Do not get carried away with such a bright texture for all the wooden elements of the yard. Exclusive only wins when it is unique.

It is quite fair to say that the first thing to do when arranging a personal plot is a fence. Its main functions are obvious - protecting the territory from unauthorized entry and prying eyes. But what, if not a fence, gives the site near a country house an individuality? Therefore, when building a fence, it is important not only to follow the technology, but also to try to make it fit as harmoniously as possible into the environment surrounding your home. After all, in the end, this is what will provide genuine home comfort.

Wooden fence: main advantages

Wood is a classic solution for building a fence. Despite all the advantages of modern materials - corrugated board, chain-link mesh, euro picket fence, etc. - wooden picket fences are still in very high demand.

The advantages of the tree are obvious:

  • ecological cleanliness;
  • availability and relatively low cost;
  • ease of processing;
  • appearance aesthetics.

At the same time, this material also has a number of disadvantages, which mainly relate to its fragility. Therefore, if you decide to build a wooden fence around a country house, you have to properly take care that it lasts as long as possible. And at the same time, it did not lose either its appearance or protective properties.

To do this, even before the start of construction, it is necessary to cover all wooden elements with an antiseptic to protect against mold and decay. In addition, it does not hurt to impregnate them with a flame retardant for fire protection purposes. Well, after completing the installation of a wooden fence, you will need to cover it with paint (preferably waterproof), stain or varnish.

The finish coating will significantly extend the life of your fence and reliably protect it from the sun, dampness, temperature extremes, pests and other negative operating factors.

We build a wooden fence with our own hands: where to start?

The start of any construction is laid in the construction estimate. In your case, it will be extremely simple. After all, if you are going to build a fence yourself, all you need to do is choose the right materials, calculate their quantity and, of course, the cost.

It is noteworthy that if earlier a simple picket fence was meant by a wooden fence, today a much wider choice is available for those who want to build such a fence around their house. First of all, we note that there are two main categories of wooden fences - solid and with clearance.

The most popular among both the first and second are such types of fences as:

Which one to choose is up to you. At the same time, it must be remembered that twice as much material will be used to build a solid fence than for a fence with a gap. On the other hand, the second option will not be able to hide what is happening in your yard from curious neighbors and passers-by. However, fences with a gap demonstrate higher wind resistance at a similar canvas height to solid ones. But in any case, the choice will depend only on your financial capabilities and aesthetic preferences.

Site plan

It is best to start construction with a work plan. Only in this way will you be able to adequately assess its volume, your financial capabilities and the time it will take to build a fence around the site. To do this, it is necessary to measure the perimeter of the latter, as well as determine the location of the gate section and the gate. If you want to build a fence at the cost of small funds, point supports are the most suitable option - in this case, the foundation is not required for the construction of the fence.

When counting the number of support pillars, it should be remembered that they are installed no further than 3 m from each other. Otherwise, the transverse logs will begin to sag over time, which will lead to a loss of strength of the fence.

Support posts for gates and wickets, as well as corner supports, should be more massive than purlins, since in fact the entire fence structure rests on them. As the first, it is best to choose a metal profiled pipe with a section of 6x6 cm, and the 4x4 cm profile will perfectly cope with the role of the latter.

After taking measurements, it is necessary to draw a construction plan. It will help you visually assess the amount of work and calculate the optimal fence configuration, of course, taking into account all the features of the site being equipped - elevation changes, the presence of obstacles, etc.

Purchase of materials and collection of tools

Suppose that you chose a wooden picket fence 1.5 m high as the main material, the width and thickness of which are 15x2.5 cm. To ensure the wind resistance of the fence and its overall reliability, the installation depth of the support pillars should be equal to a third of the height. In this case, the lower edge of the support should be located 20 cm below the soil freezing line. If on your site the latter does not exceed 80 cm, then the height of the support will be 2.5 m.

In areas with heaving or weak sandy soils, support pillars will have to be butted. On strong soil, it will be possible to get by with a pile or driven installation method. The supports of high and heavy fences installed on normal soils will have to be concreted.

After you have decided on the basic materials, it remains to buy them and deliver them to the construction site. Along the way, you need to remember to purchase everything else that may be required to install the fence - consumables (nails, bolts, drills, emery or grinding wheels, antiseptic and fire retardant, stain, varnish or paint, etc.) and, of course, tools.

To build a wooden fence you will need:

  • roulette;
  • level;
  • hammer;
  • axe;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw;
  • chisel;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • kapron cord;
  • shovel and crowbar.

You should not delay the process of building a fence - it is better to start it with all the necessary materials. As for the tool, what you don’t have can be borrowed from neighbors or acquaintances already in the process of work.

Construction of wooden fences: an algorithm of actions

The optimal period for arranging the site around a country house is summer, but the fence can be built in spring and autumn - the main thing is that the soil is not frozen and dry. Before starting work, the area along the fence installation line must be carefully cleared and, if possible, leveled.

The construction of the fence is carried out in several stages:

  1. Site marking.
  2. Installation of supports.
  3. Installation of the picket fence on the transverse logs.
  4. Installation of cross bars on supports.
  5. Finishing of metal and wooden surfaces.

To mark the future fence, you will need a tape measure, metal or wooden pegs and a nylon cord. Initially, the installation points for the support pillars for the gate and the gate, as well as the corner supports, are indicated. Here, taking into account the external dimensions of the supports, pegs are driven in, which are connected by a nylon cord - it allows you to control the linearity of the fence.

Installation of support poles

This is the most time-consuming stage of construction. Each support, or rather the quality of its installation, requires the closest attention. After all, the reliability of the entire fence directly depends on this.

Backfilling of support pillars is performed as follows:

  1. With the help of a crowbar and a shovel, holes of the required depth are dug, the diameter of which should be approximately three times the diagonal section of the supports.
  2. At the bottom of the pit, approximately 5 cm in height, sand is poured, which is poured with water and carefully compacted.
  3. A pole is installed at the bottom of the pit and a mixture of crushed stone and sand is poured on 20-30 cm, which must be properly compacted.
  4. During the installation of each of the supports, it is necessary to carefully monitor the observance of the correct level.
  5. If sand makes up a significant part of the soil or it is heaving, partial concreting must be performed. To do this, pour 2-10 cm of sand into the pit, compact it and cover it with concrete to a depth of approximately -10 cm from the soil line. The remaining hole is covered with a mixture of crushed stone and sand and carefully rammed.
  6. On strong soils, backfilling is carried out up to the soil line. If desired, you can concrete the top 10 cm of the pit.

Fence fabric assembly

To create sections of the fence, you should prepare transverse logs and a picket fence. The first are performed individually along the length of the span. In the case of a fence with a height of 1.5 m, there will be 2 crossbars on each of the sections (with a significant height, 3 or more transverse logs are installed to ensure the stability of the fence structure). Logs should be placed symmetrically with respect to the middle of the fence canvas but not more than 20-30 cm from the top and bottom of the picket fence.

If the crossbars are wooden, it remains to lay the boards and strengthen them with nails or self-tapping screws. The picket fence is attached to the profile pipe with bolts - for this, through holes should be drilled in the logs. You can also install boards on the crossbars after attaching the latter to the supports - it's up to you to decide how it will be more convenient.

Wooden crossbars are mounted by means of bolted connections, but for this, special ears must be welded to the metal support pillars at the desired height. Logs from a profile pipe are installed by welding.

After mounting the fence to the crossbars, the section is mounted on supports - and so on to the bitter end. The last thing to do is to cover the wooden elements of the fence with varnish, stain or paint, and the metal ones - primed and painted.

Construction of a wooden fence in stages, video

The fence refers to the elements of the garden landscape. In addition to their direct "duties" - protecting the site from unauthorized access and indicating the boundaries of private households, fences play an important role in the aesthetic arrangement of the territory. The fence can be of different types, configurations and textures, but the most popular in the decorative sense was and remains the wooden version. In addition, such a fence can be made independently, showing all your imagination of the master.

Making a wooden fence is quite simple compared to a metal counterpart. This option has many advantages with a minimum indicator of disadvantages. For the construction of a wooden fence, you can use different materials - boards from different types of trees: beech, pine, larch or oak. Coniferous trees are especially valued. Each master chooses the material at his discretion, because the main thing is that the wooden fence is solid and stands for a long time.

How to make a fence

Wood fences can be divided into 2 groups: a fence and a palisade. Also, such fences differ in design (picket fence, wattle fence, bamboo fence, ranch, lattice fabric and other options for fence design).

The most popular and simple are picket fences, as well as those made by a continuous row of boards. Regardless of what kind of fence you plan to build, it is imperative to carry out preparatory work on its device:

  • clear the area for a wooden fence (remove debris, pull out grass or weeds, uproot stumps and roots of old trees, if any);
  • dismantle the old fence;
  • draw up a draft diagram of the future picket fence, where to mark the place of the gate, gate, taking into account the boundary lines and signs;
  • choose and buy all the necessary materials for building a fence (wood, nails or construction screws treated with an anti-corrosion agent, cement to stabilize the fence support, beams and logs, paint);
  • prepare tools (hammer, hacksaw, shovel, crowbar, hole drill, rammer, cord and pegs for marking the site, wheelbarrow, container for mixing cement mortar or concrete mixer).

Service life of a wooden fence

A wooden fence has a service life of about 8 years. However, if it is properly looked after and repaired in time, then this period increases by 3 times. A solid wooden fence can stand for more than 30 years, although fences from historical wooden architecture are known that are more than 50 years old.

The main factors for the durability of wooden fences are:

  • quality of building material-wood (soft or hard wood, manufacturer);
  • good quality and correct installation;
  • operating conditions.

Manufacturers determine the quality of a material by its likely wear resistance. Also, the life of the fence depends on the accuracy of handling it.

The advantages of wooden fences are:

  • environmental friendliness - absolutely pure natural material that does not harm the environment, the sanded fence is pleasant to the touch, it does not take sunlight, which is important for closely growing plants;
  • variability - compared to the factory version of the metal profile, which is usually installed in a vertical position, with wood, you can work out various options - horizontally, vertically, diagonally, interlacing, and also use boards of various lengths, widths and thicknesses;
  • ease of installation - the installation of a wooden fence does not require special skills, solid concreting and a large number of people, since a wooden fence is not heavy, it is easy to handle with one person;
  • aesthetics - the natural beauty of wood leads in the selection of materials for the future fence, it looks great in any landscape design solution.

It should be borne in mind that wood is “afraid” of exposure to moisture, as over time it begins to rot, blacken, and become covered with mold spots. To delay these unpleasant moments, it is necessary to carefully look after a wooden fence and carry out antiseptic prophylaxis for it in time. You should also pay attention to the combustibility of this building material and use special means for its impregnation-protection in order to avoid fire.

wooden fence design

Modern wood-built fences come in a variety of designs in any format to provide a visual impact. Such a fence is a traditional option for Russian villages, holiday villages or country cottages.

The tree is beautifully decorated, covered with various paints or varnishes, it harmoniously fits into any landscape composition. The design of a wooden fence depends on the preferences, imagination of the owner, as well as the general compositional background. The most original fences are obtained using the following types of fences:

  • solid - made in the form of a palisade of stakes or round logs, slabs, edged boards;
  • option of staggered laying or overlapping - the boards are laid in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal position;
  • "wickerwork" - the boards are fixed between the supporting pillars, either from the inside or from the outside, by braiding them;
  • - a combination of boards with round logs as a support, a classic version;
  • wicker fence - a vine, tree branches, twigs are used;
  • fence-lattice - bars-slats are used;
  • a fence in the style of a cowboy ranch - the exoticism of horizontally arranged bars attracts with brutality, it is recommended to combine it with a massive concrete or stone base.

Whatever fence design you choose, you should consider its role in the overall compositional picture and functionality.

When it comes to the fence of the estate, the board is most often relegated to the last plan. This material is considered by many to be temporary and not a creative option.

However, in recent years, the design of wooden fences has changed significantly. From primitive "ladders" they turned into masterpieces of wooden architecture. Excellent appearance, ease of installation and minimal cost attract the attention of many owners of suburban housing.

In this article, we bring to your attention an overview of modern board fences and practical recommendations for their manufacture. We hope that after getting acquainted with the options presented, you will change your mind and build a beautiful and practical wooden fence in the country with your own hands.

Plank fence options

In order to install a wooden fence, you do not need to strain your imagination and test your design talents. Dozens of interesting types of fences have already been built and photographed.

The easiest option is a horizontal slab fence. Its cost is minimal, and the aesthetic qualities are high. Before installation, the slab must be ennobled by grinding, tinted by firing and varnished. Otherwise, its external will be associated with pasture for livestock.

One more piece of advice. A wooden fence made of unedged boards looks perfect with wooden buildings. In the photo below, the white color of the walls of the mansion and the columns of the entrance group do not fit well with the wooden fence.

Slab fence - simple, inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing

In the design under consideration, the runs from the boards are fixed between two wooden posts. The ends of the racks are protected from rain by an inclined bar. The most vulnerable point - the contact of wood and concrete requires high-quality insulation. Here you need to use modern antiseptic impregnations or coating with hot bitumen.

The slab, peeled from the bark and overlapped, looks very nice in the fence. He is nailed to wooden poles. The edged board covers the front joint. An easy-to-make plank canopy crowns the structure.

Another interesting option is the "artificial" slab. In this case, the edges of the boards are cut so that they form a symmetrical pattern.

To create a color contrast, the wooden linings on the poles are treated with a dark stain.

The "decorative turn" method is equally acceptable for both slab and edged boards. In the latter case, we get an aesthetic fence-blinds. When viewed directly, he looks deaf. However, due to the gaps between the slats, this design is not only well ventilated, but also partially transmits the sun's rays.

Weaving plants love these fences and quickly turn them into flowering trellises.

Fragment of the design of the fence-blinds from the edged board

In passing, we note that the best basis for attaching fence boards is metal posts. A compromise option is to embed steel clips in concrete from scraps of a profile pipe. Wooden racks are inserted into them and fixed with self-tapping screws.

A bit of imagination and a nondescript obapol croaker turns into a designer picket fence guarding the “kingdom of Berendey”.

Poles for such a fence can be cut from a cheap round timber thinner. The natural form of this material will fit perfectly into the "country design" chosen for this fence.

The classic picket fence (planed board with a rounded edge) remains a relevant element of the fence structure. The only condition is not to paint it with dull green or brown paint. It is better to treat the planks with an antiseptic and open them with a good varnish a couple of times. Wood after such refinement will sparkle with golden hues and will last 10 years longer.

If you prefer tinted wood, then use dark brown paint for this purpose. It will reliably protect the fence from moisture and give it a noble look.

A blank edged fence looks better when the vertical slats are overlapped on both sides rather than on one side. This editing scheme creates a rhythmic stepped structure. The ends of the boards are covered from above with a planed plank. A decorative framing belt is also mounted at the bottom of the fence.

A blind fence will not look boring if arched lattices from a thin plank are introduced into its design scheme.

Arched lattice inserts eliminate the monotony of a blind fence

When choosing material for the fence, pay attention to the terrace board. It is strong, expressive and durable. Attach it to metal posts installed in a concrete foundation.

The photo below shows a variant of double-sided horizontal installation of a terrace board (American fence). To increase rigidity in the middle part of the spans there are vertical bars.

Decking fence - 50 year guarantee

Such a fence cannot be called cheap, but it is very durable and beautiful. The terrace board is made of a colored wood-polymer composite and does not need to be painted.

In the fence structure, the board can be combined with a bar. Below we see a variant of the fence, in which the beam is installed on the outside, and the board is nailed on the inside. Its joints are not visible, because they are covered by a beam. Brown tinted wood in contrast with the white plinth gives the structure a solid and solid look.

From the facade, this fence is made solid. There is no railing on the side of the board at the bottom. This decision was made to improve the ventilation of the site.

Russia is far from America, but the romance of cowboy ranches has reached us. On a spacious plot, remote from other buildings, a low country-style fence looks great. Its base is thick wooden poles, to which three belts of boards are horizontally nailed on one side. In the upper part, a wooden plank is launched crosswise, closing the open "windows" of the sections.

Wicker board fences

If someone tells you that you can weave fences from a board, don't hesitate. Today it is the most fashionable topic. A wicker fence made of boards looks great, and there are many options for its installation.

The board for the wicker fence should not be very thick. Therefore, having bought a trimmed "thirty" in the warehouse, you can safely plan it on both sides to a thickness of 25 mm. The optimal width of the bar is from 8 to 10 cm.

The simplest version of such a fence resembles the wall of a summer gazebo. Having made openwork panels from wooden lamellas, they are attached to the pillars. For contrast, you can nail a frame from a dark board along the contour.

Plank fence with a diamond pattern is elegant and light

The wooden fence post is antiseptic and concreted in the ground

And here is another, no less interesting plank wickerwork.

Here, a thin planed board 25 mm thick and 2.5 meters long is staggered to the posts. The bend gives it an original way of installation: the ends of the boards are alternately fastened on one side and on the other side of the wooden rack. In the middle part of the span there is a vertical rail that fixes the bend. Places of fastening of boards to racks are covered by laths.

Vertical weaving from boards looks no worse. In this case, the answer to the question of which board is better to use for the fence is obvious: at a length of 2 meters, the plank is most easily bent, no more than 16 mm thick and 8 cm wide.

A wicker fence is good for everyone, but it can also be improved by combining it with a picket fence.

Such a design is quite difficult to install, but its picturesque appearance justifies all the effort expended.

The original version of the fence, combining weaving from boards with a two-sided installation of a picket fence

Those who wish to build an exclusive fence from boards should contact an experienced craftsman. Only he will be able to assemble the construction depicted in this photo.

Each board for such a fence is cut separately, based on the section template. At its ends and side faces, connecting spikes are cut, with which the boards are connected to each other according to the principle of puzzles, attached to the pillars and to the lower belt.

The advice that we gave in the course of the article should be supplemented with the parameters of the main elements of the board fence:

  • The size of the cross section of wooden poles is 10x10 cm.
  • If a steel profile is used for racks, its cross section must be at least 40x40 mm (wall 2 mm).
  • Horizontal crossbars (runs) must have a cross section of at least 30x50 mm with a rack spacing of 2 meters.
  • For ease of installation of wooden girders, mounting plates “ears” with holes drilled in them for self-tapping screws must be welded to steel racks.

At the stage of purchasing materials, the question arises of how to calculate how many boards are needed for the fence. It is solved simply. If the fence is solid, then its total length must be multiplied by the height and thickness of the purchased board.

For a lattice fence from a picket fence, the calculation is done differently. Taking into account the chosen step of the slats, their number is determined per 1 running meter of the fence. The resulting pieces are multiplied by the total length of the fence, and if necessary, converted to cubic meters, multiplying the total area by the thickness of one plank.

Another important point - how to paint the fence from the boards? If you save on the quality of the paint, then the fence will have to be updated more often. Therefore, we recommend buying expensive paint for outdoor use. Before applying it, treat the board with hot drying oil or antiseptic impregnation. The consumption of paint and impregnation will be minimal when applied to a planed board. Consider this nuance when choosing a material.

Considering the large area of the wooden fence, you need to paint it with a roller or spray gun. Omissions and flaws made during work are corrected with a paint brush.
