Slab: the subtleties of making a table from saw cut wood. Wooden slabs: dotting the “i”

Natural natural materials are increasingly found in the interior. This time, a table with a characteristic uneven edge will be made from a beautiful saw cut. With the countertop will have to work long and hard. Details of this process with a description and photo of each stage in the master class.

materials

To make a table from a saw cut of a tree with your own hands, prepare:

  • raw cut wood 170 x 60 cm, 2.5 cm thick;
  • a flat piece of steel 60 x 3.5 cm long, 3 mm thick;
  • 9mm steel rod 1.5m long x 4;
  • transparent epoxy resin;
  • transparent top coat for wood (wax and varnish);
  • black spray paint;
  • 19mm screws #12;
  • masking tape;
  • grinder;
  • chisel;
  • hammer;
  • sandpaper;
  • drill;
  • welding;
  • safety goggles and gloves.

Step 1. Using a hammer and chisel, remove the bark and loose fibers along the edge from the saw cut. Level the surface of the board with a grinder. Give it smoothness by hand, using sandpaper of different grain sizes: from coarse to fine.

Step 2. Depressions and cracks on the surface of the saw cut must be eliminated. To do this, use masking tape and epoxy. When pouring it, do not forget to heat the layers with a blowtorch so that bubbles do not form in the thickness of the material.

Step 3. After the epoxy has dried, level and sand the entire surface of the board again.

Step 4. Cut a flat piece of steel into eight pieces of 10 cm each. Divide them in pairs and weld them together in the form of a corner. Sand the weld area.

Step 5. Bend the steel rods in the middle. These will be the legs of the table. Weld their ends to the metal corners.

Step 6. Drill in the corners to make two mounting holes.

Step 7. Paint the resulting legs with black paint.

Step 8. Cover the surface of the cut with a transparent varnish with a matte texture.

Step 9. Polish the countertop with wax.

Step 10. Attach the table legs to the tabletop.

Wooden tables, both before and now, are very popular, but the models presented in stores cannot always meet all the requirements of the buyer. Sometimes even an ideal appearance and good functionality cannot replace the warmth and sincerity that is inherent in a product made by one's own hands. A table made of sawn wood will become a reliable and original element of the decor of your home.

The most important element of the table is the tabletop, it is the process of its manufacture that is the most time-consuming, but the result can exceed any expectations. In order to make a table from a cut of a tree, you will need:

  • Chainsaw;
  • Circular saw or hacksaw;
  • Glue for wood;
  • Hammer or mallet;
  • Large clamps or other fasteners;
  • Thickening machine or its home-made equivalent;
  • Grinder angle grinder (Bulgarian);
  • Roller or brushes;
  • Drill and set checked.

Manufacturing process

A do-it-yourself table made of sawn wood should be made from well-dried material, it is best that it be logs of the same diameter, but there are also combined options that, with proper layout, will look even more interesting. Consider the option of a table in which wooden logs with a diameter of 400 and 250 mm will be used; for this, after drying, they should be dissolved into sections of approximately the same thickness.

  1. Marking - using a tape measure and a marker, apply strokes to a wooden log, making a step of 70 mm between them. It is not worth pointing them around the entire perimeter of the workpiece; anyway, it will be inconvenient to look at the line during sawing;
  2. For a wooden tabletop measuring 1200x500 mm, ten small cuts and five large ones will be required.
  3. Sawing - after checking the reliability of fixing the chain on the chainsaw and its sharpness, you can start sawing the log into slices. Consider the fact that the log under the table, due to its curvature, will not lie flat, and you will have to adjust the horizontal angle for each cut.

    Advice! When starting to saw, keep the chainsaw exactly at 90 degrees, without changing the angle in the process, otherwise the cut will be ruined.

  4. Marking in size - for the convenience of fixing the tabletop, the cuts must be shaped into squares. To do this, separate the workpieces of small diameter, and find the smallest among them. Using a ruler, measure what maximum square can be obtained from it, and mark this size on all cuts with an average diameter of 250. Do the same with cuts with a diameter of 400 mm or more;
  5. Shaping the shape of squares - this operation is carried out on a circular saw, the thickness of the wooden saw cuts under the table is too large for the disc to fly out, so the workpiece should be turned over and the procedure repeated on the reverse side. Having removed the roundings on all four sides, you get a square saw cut core, do the same with the rest of the blanks;
  6. Drilling holes for the connecting elements of the table - in order for these holes to match on all wooden cuts, it is necessary to use a template.

    Advice! The template is made from any plank or strip of chipboard, holes are drilled in it with a certain pitch, for small cuts it will be 50-100-50 mm, where the first and last digits are indented from the edges, and 100 is the distance between the holes.

  7. Using a drill with a drill with a diameter of 8 mm, holes are drilled to a depth of about 10 cm in each part of the table.

  8. Making dowels - in the store, most likely there will not be the right size, so it is better to make them yourself. Dowels can be cut out of thin sticks using a circular saw and a plank with a hole of the desired diameter, simply substitute a stopper with a screwed board along the disk, resting the bar on it, grind the dowels;
  9. Docking of elements - before joining the sections, it is necessary to lubricate all the holes and planes of the connection with wood glue, then firmly drive the dowels into the seats and use a mallet to tap the wooden saw cuts to each other. It should turn out three strips, two from small blanks and one from large ones;
  10. Fixation - in order for the gluing to pass reliably, it is necessary to compress all the parts together, this can be done with the help of large clamps, or make clamps from wooden bars and wedge blanks in them. In this position, the countertop should be 48 hours;
  11. After drying, it is necessary to connect the three parts of the table to each other, it is best to put a large strip in the middle, and narrow ones on the sides. The fastening takes place in the same way as the previous operation, do not forget to lubricate the wooden elements with glue, it still dries for two days;
  12. Horizontal alignment - for this, a thicknessing machine is used, if this is not available, then it can be made with your own hands from improvised means, the presence of an electric planer is mandatory;
  13. When the plane is leveled, you can begin to equalize the edges, the wooden table must have the correct geometric shape. Mark it in the form of a versatile rectangle;

    Advice! After marking, do not be too lazy to beat off the diagonals, if they are not equal, it means that a mistake was made during the marking and it should be redone. When making any furniture, follow this principle.

  14. Framing the tabletop - this must be done in order to avoid longitudinal chipping of chips from the table during operation. The framing is made from an ordinary timber bar with a section of 70x40 mm, making connecting cuts on it under 450. It is important to remove the edge from the outer corners of the bar;
  15. A frame made of wood is fixed with glue and self-tapping screws, after which a wedge is inserted into the places where the screws are screwed in and polished flush with the plane;
  16. The final stage is surface treatment, for this the entire stoic is covered with linseed oil 2 times and left to dry for a day.

Advice! To give the countertop a unique natural luster of wood, it is opened with a melted mixture of linseed oil and beeswax.

Because of what, among the abundance of competing materials, it still often wins and further decorates the facade of a building or the floor in your living room? The answer is simple - this is one of the few materials that only nature has created, and nothing can compare with its beauty!

From a solid tree trunk, you can make many useful and beautiful things. One of these is a do-it-yourself table made from saw cut wood.

Most likely, a completely fair question immediately came to you: How to make a table from a saw cut? This certainly requires special skills and equipment! Do not rush to conclusions. Below I will provide step-by-step information that may convince you of the opposite.

Design Choice

The design of the entire table can be divided into two components: the choice of table top and legs.

When choosing a countertop design, it is important to consider some features of your room and imagination:

  • If you want a round or oval shape, then you must have enough space, because. it has an impressive size. Ideal for a large living room or hall, as well as in harmony in the gazebo;
  • A small tabletop is a beautiful addition to a small living room;
  • The rectangle shape is suitable for all occasions.

When choosing legs, rely solely on your taste. You can make a table with one, two, three or traditionally four legs.

How do you want to see the final version? This is a purely personal question and depends on your taste and preferences. If you want something unusual, but nothing comes to mind, you can look at photos of tables from saw cut wood and make everything according to the model.

Ideal Material

Due to their inexperience, many people think that a saw cut for a countertop can be found in any nearby forest, but this is not so. You need a perfectly finished surface, without crackles and with a beautiful pattern, because. it is he who will decorate the entire structure

All material is best ordered in a specialized online store, where you can first find out all the necessary information.

So, for the right choice of material, follow some simple recommendations:

  • The saw cut wood must be resistant to moisture and must be dry;
  • Pay attention to the absence of knots, because during processing they can break off, thereby violating the surface;
  • The tabletop should turn out to be durable and lightweight, so choose the right thickness, focusing on the size of the table;
  • When buying materials, remember that the lower the price tag, the worse the quality. So that all the work does not go down the drain, it is better to overpay.

Necessary materials

Before starting work, we need to stock up not only with enthusiasm. To create a table from a solid saw cut of a tree, you must:

  • Grinding machine with a knife of different grain sizes, gloves, a chisel and a metal brush. All this will be needed for the preliminary processing of the material;
  • Saw cut and bars that will be needed for the legs;
  • Circular saw - for cutting thinner saw cuts;
  • Furniture screws and glue (carpentry) will help create the basis for the future masterpiece;
  • Epoxy resin will fill in all cuts and bumps;
  • Lacquer - to give a spectacular shade, as well as as an additional wood treatment.

Training

After you have prepared all the tools and material, you need to make a blank, i.e. carefully and as accurately as possible cut the whole saw cut into thinner ones. Their optimal cutting (thickness 1 centimeter) will allow very high quality treatment with a protective agent.

To give additional aesthetic beauty, the legs should also be processed, and if desired, even put a drawing on them!

Stages of work

To achieve your goal, stick to the following plan, it will allow you to create a quality table the first time.

Using a chisel, we eliminate irregularities, remove the bark with a metal brush, and eliminate roughness with a grinder and sandpaper of different grain sizes. This is very important to do in good faith, because this work directly affects the quality of the finished product.

Using furniture screws and a screwdriver, we create the supporting part. We connect the prepared elements with glue.

We are waiting for the complete hardening of the glue with resin. After that, we grind the entire surface, to give it a more expressive saw cut pattern.

And finally, the last step is varnishing. This will give our creation a unique shade and serve as processing. The varnish is selected according to your taste, natural oils are also used.

Outcome

So we have created another miracle that will delight you and all your guests. Don't be afraid to improvise to achieve a unique design. How to make a saw table? It's not difficult, is it?!

Work description

It should be noted that the wood from which the table will be made with your own hands must be well dried. Otherwise, during operation, irregularities and cracks may appear on it.

You can use a table made with your own hands from a vertical cut of a tree as a small dining table or a concise workplace with a computer. You will definitely appreciate the advantages of its original shape and attractive appearance.

Decoration of any interior

Many horizontal rounded cuts of wood are actively used today as wall and floor decor and, of course, in the production of tables, chairs, and other furniture. Tables finished using this technique are unique, the arrangement of small and large cut circles can be arbitrary or form a certain pattern.

Making a beautiful product with your own hands is not easy, but very interesting. And if you follow all the requirements for work, then the result will please you.

Materials and tools

  • Tabletop. It will serve as the basis for the location of the slices of the tree. You can use an old part or prepare the shape you want from a piece of moisture resistant plywood (12mm). This material is preferred, it will not change shape and will provide a flat surface for do-it-yourself decoration of the main part of the table.
  • The required number of horizontal (end) slices. They can be picked up from the same type of wood or from different ones to make it interesting to beat it in the drawing. It is desirable to have different section diameters (from large to very small), in which case they can be stacked more closely to each other. Each cut should be no more than 1 cm thick. Otherwise, more epoxy will be needed.
  • To fill the free space left after laying the saw cuts, you will need a high-quality epoxy resin with a hardener.
  • Joiner's glue (suitable for all types of wood). With it, each slice will be separately attached to the table top with your own hands. Get a capacity up to 300 grams.
  • Finishing varnish.
  • Grinding machine with circles of different grain sizes - ranging from 120 and more.

Detailed job description

The final result depends on how patiently, carefully you treat the implementation of all processes. Use only well-dried materials in your work, this will save you from damage to the product in the future.

After adding 10% carbon black and up to 10% bronze powder to the epoxy, you will get a coffee-colored product. To get a white color - add regular chalk. The soot will turn the resin black. With the help of cement, you will achieve a gray tint. There are red, green, blue pigments on sale that will make your table even more original, suitable for a particular interior.

  1. Having prepared and given color (if necessary) to the epoxy, you can begin to fill in all the voids formed during the gluing of the sections. Using a large number of cuts with a small radius will help save epoxy. Pour the product slowly, carefully make sure that there are no air voids left. Then leave the table for a long time until the final solidification.
  2. When the resin is completely cured, proceed to the final grinding of the surface. Start with a rough sander attachment, then get the table perfectly smooth using a fine sanding pad. As a result, each cut will be clearly defined, and the space around it will be completely filled with epoxy.
  3. The final touch is to varnish the table. With polyurethane compounds, tables serve for a long time, while maintaining a beautiful original appearance.

Dreaming of creating a cozy interior, many pay attention to tables made of wooden cuts. What options exist? Which model to choose?

Getting to the manufacture of a wooden table, you need to consider its design. And then start working.

Features of models of wooden tables: we determine the support

First, let's choose the shape of the support. The choice of material, finish, tools depends on the decision. Models are different.

    Model on a single support. The round table looks good.

    Models created on two legs must have a jumper. Then the table will be stable and easy to use.

    The easiest way to create a traditional table on four legs. This design is the most reliable.

It is important to understand how to implement emerging ideas. And if the top of the table can be hidden with a tablecloth, then the legs turn out to be an important aesthetic component that can give out deviations from the standards.

How to choose the shape of the countertop?

Slab tables are made with tops of various shapes. What are the possible options?

    The round model looks good in a spacious room created in a rustic or Scandinavian style. Only voluminous space will provide freedom of movement for people.

    For the dining area, the oval model is best suited. A large-sized table is created, at which the whole family and guests can be accommodated.

    Furniture that has small oval table tops is a coffee or coffee table. For the living room, it is better to choose high quality furniture, functional and elegant.

    There is also a universal form of the table - with a rectangular wooden top made of solid wood. If you decide to choose a rectangular model, then you can successfully implement any design. You can create a small table of a folding or portable type.

A table from a saw cut can be made by anyone. There are no restrictions regarding the shape, height and size.

What is required for work?

Before creating a table made of natural wood, it is important to take care of the availability of all the necessary materials.

You can use an old countertop or a piece of plywood. Only a high-quality countertop made of end cuts will allow you to count on a long service life.

  1. End cuts. Configuration, the number of cuts depends only on your plan. There should be enough elements for a uniform, tight installation across the entire countertop. You can use different types of wood or material of the same species. If you want to create a beautiful table made of wood, it is best to combine.
  2. Epoxy resin with a hardener is a substance that will fill the space between the cuts. The amount of material used can be any. Made of quality material, the table will turn out to be beautiful and reliable. Cheap things don't last long.

  3. Joiner's glue is needed for attaching wood slices and countertops. The volume of glue is determined by the specifics of the work. You must be sure that each end of the structure is attached securely. From one package, 200–300 g of finished glue is obtained.
  4. Electric grinders are used to grind wood surfaces. Additionally, sandpaper with a grit of 120 or higher will be required.

Stages of work

The technology for manufacturing countertops from wooden saw cuts is specific.

Training

    The first task is cutting the material into thin saw cuts. You must do everything accurately and accurately.. If you can cut fragments of the desired thickness, the impregnation with a protective agent will turn out to be of high quality. Yes, and epoxy can be saved. The thickness of the cuts should be 1 cm. If you do not have special equipment, contact a professional who can correctly cut the recommended thickness of the material with a chainsaw or circular saw. Dry blanks are used for cutting. If the end cuts are wet, the slab needs to be dried.

    The next step is to prepare the foundation. It is best to refuse to use chipboard, since the material can deform or fall apart when the humidity level changes. Use slices of natural wood or thick plywood. Moisture resistance is important.

When buying a material, you can order it to be cut according to the calculated dimensions. Masters can correctly cut the material for the table of the required dimensions.

Description of the main part of the work

How to make a table using natural wood cut yourself?

    The slab needs to be properly processed. Carry out sanding and bark removal. The material should become smooth along the end edge. The first stage is the blank for the countertop, then the layout of the sections and the manufacture of a quality product will not be a difficult task.

    Now you can fix the elements with wood glue. Lubricate each cut, and then press it close to the base. Follow the recommendations of the adhesive manufacturer, set aside the structure until the adhesive is completely dry.

    Now we need to make the sides around the edge of the table. For rectangular tables use plywood or wooden slats, for semicircular tables - flexible sheets. Fastening can be carried out in any convenient way, therefore the use of nails or self-tapping screws is allowed.

    Then the epoxy resin is prepared. Use fillers to get the desired shade. To create a coffee color, 10% carbon black and bronze powder are used, for white color - classic chalk, for gray - cement, for black - soot. You can buy ready-made dyes.

    Epoxy resin needs to fill all the voids, then wait for the product to dry completely.

    Now it is allowed to grind the entire surface. To do this, you will have to remove the upper thinnest layer using an emery wheel. You must create a countertop that has a pronounced saw cut pattern.

    The last step involves applying varnish. The best material is polyurethane. Durable and resistant to abrasion.

A table using a slab will last a long time. Creativity, ingenuity, a little experience with wood - and you can count on a good result.
