This book was actually written to the tragic death of General Rokhlin. Lev Yakovlevich Cool refined the idea of \u200b\u200bwriting a book about him. Our last conversation on this topic took place two weeks before the death of General.
After the death of Leo Yakovlevich, the author did not change anything that would say about the general last time. Other significant changes in the text that was at that time was also not done. After all, the author was practically relied on the opinion of the general in almost all the estimates. And it was impossible to allow this opinion, even from the best motives, was subject to free interpretation. And the author's assessments of the personality of Rokhlin himself remained unchanged. Is that the negative today is perceived differently and it seems not so significant as it seemed during the life of Lion Yakovlevich. The secret of our disappointments is simple: we have little know the biography of our heroes. After all, if you figure out, today there are not many people among the famous politicians in the country, whose life could be an example for imitation. Most of today's political idols slid in life easily and easily. Fate did not beat them, did not learn, did not check the strength of their characters and beliefs. The rhodes of their courage were some "cool" lords, said in the next interview or on an authorized rally. At best, they dreamed to participate in some adventures, the total of which is known and can only cause a sense of regret.
As for the persons endowed with state authorities today (referring to members of the government), their biographies are almost unknown to society, and if known, then nothing but beware cannot be called. These are the biographies of ordinary officials who know life on newspapers, and their work on textbooks. There is nothing built on their account, there is nothing experience in their life, there is no interest in their destiny that it might cause interest and suggest that these people can be expected.
The situation is no better and in the professional military environment. But then there are two components. First, the policy of the current leadership of the country led to the fact that people in pursuit are judged today either by those who in the center of Moscow shoots from tanks on citizens of their country, or for those who have configured themselves multi-storey mansions and goes to "Mercedes" . Having come into politics in the literal sense from the trenches, Rokhlin with the striking speed became one of the most notable political figures of Russia. The general broke this idea, and soon everything became clear: the army, despite all his problems, gave the country a new leader of the All-Russian scale, the leader, who managed to give people hope, to instill faith and induce to action. At the same time, it scared those who have long settled in political cuisine and occupied places in the structures of power. Rokhlin loved to equally and hated. He became the only one from politicians whom Boris Yeltsin promised to "dream." And the only one, whose death, despite all the conversations about how she came, exposed all the cruelty of political confrontation in the country.

The first part of the book describes the path that Lev Rokhlin passed to Chechen events, how the nature of the future general was formed, his views and habits, as combat experience was acquired.
