DIY master class on creating a box

We offer step-by-step instructions on how to make a box at home. To do this, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • tape measure;
  • simple pencil;
  • board 25 mm thick;
  • wood trims 15 mm thick;
  • thin plywood;
  • metal corners;
  • nails and screws;
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • metal hinges for opening the cover structure;
  • hammer.

The first step is to familiarize yourself with the diagrams and drawings of how to make a box. This will allow you to correctly match the dimensions of the finished product. Do not make too large structures, as they will take up a lot of free space.

When all the components are ready, you can proceed to making a storage system for vegetables and fruits. The process includes several stages:


On the surface of the boards, mark the size of the side parts of the product. Next, we move on to the bottom of the box. Mark the size on the wood trim. After that, using a hacksaw, we begin to cut the blanks.

We fix the boards with each other with small nails. We fix the bottom details using the same technique.

The cover of the product consists of a plywood sheet. It is installed on special hinges that allow you to control the closing process.

Tool storage box

This type of design is considered the best DIY drawer idea. This product will allow you to keep all the working tools in one place. Here you can make additional sections for storing screws, nails and nuts.

To do this, you need to prepare:

  • thin board;
  • thick plywood;
  • hacksaw;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • tape measure;
  • drawing of the finished product;
  • metal corners.


On sheets of thick plywood we make markings for the details of the box. After that, we drill holes for fastening metal hinges. Next, we connect the side parts to each other.

We are starting to manufacture the bottom for the storage system. To do this, we attach a thin board to the side parts of the box. To prevent it from collapsing under the weight of tools, it must be strengthened with thin boards. To do this, several wooden elements are stuffed on the bottom surface.

In the side parts of the plywood we draw the markings for the handles. They will be cut inside the main body of the product. You will need an electric jigsaw here. The cutting base is installed at the beginning of the marking.


In the process of cutting out parts, you should not make sudden movements. They can provoke the appearance of cracks on the surface of the product.

Now we start installing the partitions. To do this, cut out a small square from thin plywood. It is fixed with metal corners in the middle of the structure.

DIY photo of boxes

Very often, when I walk past fruit markets after a trading day, I see many discarded crates made of beech slats. There are so many of them, and the tree is valuable and decorative, and I have a question: what is so interesting and useful that you can make from these slats with your own hands. And you can make, for example, such a box for linen, which, in addition to its functionality, is an interior decoration. Several drawers, as if casually stacked on top of each other with beautiful gizmos inside, will create a unique style and comfort in your bedroom.

The box itself is assembled quite simply from wooden slats and bars:

A tool box today is a very indispensable thing for every owner. Most of us have a lot of different tools, which we may not use very often, but nevertheless, we store it, since more than one repair is not complete without it. In order for the tool to be in one place and to be conveniently transported, we use special boxes. Often we just buy them at the nearest store, the assortment and variety allows us to do this. But why not make it yourself? The manufacturing process is not too complicated, anyone should cope, especially with a hand-made thing, which is much more pleasant to use than the purchased option. This article will describe 4 different ways of making boxes, a photo report is attached.

Let's start making!

Manufacturing method No. 1

We need:

Material

Plywood;
- pine board;
- nails;
- wood glue.

Tool


- drill;
- hammer;
- chisel;
- manual frezer;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- roulette.

The first step is to find the necessary material, for this plywood or trim boards are suitable. Further, according to the presented drawing, you need to make a markup, then cut out all the parts of the body. It is necessary to make special grooves in which the partition will be placed, for this we use a hand-held router, or another available tool.

The diagram shows the following body parts:

1 - wall (2 pcs.);
2 - sidewall (2 pcs.);
3 - bottom;
4 - groove along the thickness of the partition and a depth of 1 / 2–1 / 3 of the thickness of the material

When everything is ready, all elements of the box body should be sanded. Next, we assemble the body together, fix the parts with wood glue, and then additionally fasten it with small nails.

Now we make a partition for the box, we cut out a special handle, for this we use a jigsaw.


When the partition is ready, grease the grooves with wood glue and install it in its place.


Next, we make overhead handles from the planks, use a planer to round the corners. Then we make tool holders from the rails, use a jigsaw, and a drill. The holes will be used for screwdrivers, and pliers, etc. will be installed in the square cutouts. tool.


To prevent the box from getting dirty and to protect it from the environment, we cover the surface with varnish. As a result of the work done, we get such a homemade box.

Manufacturing method No. 2

Drawer stool


Material

Plywood or OSB;
- wooden beams;
- self-tapping screws;
- wood glue.

Tool

We take the existing plywood sheet, mark it on it, and according to the presented dimensions we cut out the cover (Fig. 1), then the longitudinal sidewalls (Fig. 2) and the sidewalls (Fig. 3).


Then we take a wooden beam with a section of 40x50 mm, cut out the handle, and 4 legs with bevels at the ends at an angle of 15 °.


Next, we assemble the structure together, use self-tapping screws as fixing elements.


Parts layout:

2 - king;
3 - handle;
4 - leg;
5 - sidewall.

When everything is ready, using sandpaper or a grinder, round off the sharp corners and smooth the surface. Next, you can apply a protective coating.

The end result should be such an unusual toolbox, which, if necessary, can be transformed into an ordinary stool, for this it is enough to turn it over and put it on its legs, with the help of it it will be convenient to reach the place we need, at a time when growth does not allow do it.

Manufacturing method No. 3.

Box for the young master.


Does your child love tinkering? We offer to make together with him a small box where he will keep his favorite instrument.

To make a box with our own hands, we need the following

Material

16 mm boards;
- round wooden beam;
- self-tapping screws;
- wood glue.

Tool

Cutting tool available;
- screwdriver;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- roulette;
- clamps.

First you need to take the existing boards with a section of 16 mm, then we make the markings according to the dimensions provided, after which we cut the wood into the components we need.

The drawing shows the following details:

1 - sidewall;
2 - bottom;
3 - handle;
4 - handle stand;
5 - holder.


Using sandpaper, we grind the surface and remove sharp corners. When everything is ready, we begin to connect all the parts to each other, first you need to connect the bottom and sidewalls, then we put vertical racks along the marked lines and at the same time we put a horizontal handle.

We fix everything with glue and self-tapping screws. Then we install special screwdriver holders.


Now you can paint, choose the color and coating at your discretion.

Manufacturing method No. 4


The next version of the tool box is well suited for carrying various and necessary equipment for us, its appearance will be distinguished by solidity and reliability.

To make a box with our own hands, we need the following

Material

The board is not thicker than 12 mm;
- self-tapping screws;
- wood glue;
- a pen;
- corners 8 pcs.;
- latch 2 pcs.;
- loop 2 pcs.


Tool

Cutting tool available;
- screwdriver;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- roulette;
- clamps.

For the manufacture of the box we use such wood as: pine, linden or poplar. The most optimal board thickness will be 12 mm.


Next, we make the markup, according to the indicated dimensions in the drawings, and then saw it into its component parts, as shown in the photo.

In order to make sure that the wood was cut correctly, you need to put all the parts into a single box.

First, we assemble the bottom part and the lid of the box, for convenience we use clamps and corner clamps. We fix the details with each other with wood glue.


Then, using a drill, we drill a hole for self-tapping screws, we make holes countersinking.

A box is a necessary thing in everyday life. There is no point in buying or ordering it, because it is much easier to make a thing with your own hands from boards. The main thing is to follow the technology step by step, choose the right boards and know how to make a box. Then everything will work out.

Choosing a board and making parts

The size of the boards largely depends on the size of the intended product. There is a widespread belief that low-quality planks are good for a drawer. Is it so? If the surface of the tree is irregular, with knots and deformations, then when sawing or processing the board, a person can get injured. In order to create such a structure, it makes no sense to take high-quality expensive wood. It is best to choose a medium-sized and quality board. How do you make the simplest drawer where you can put your tools?

To manufacture such a structure, you will need:

  • boards;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • sanding paper;
  • carpenter's pencil;
  • ruler or triangle;
  • jigsaw or circular saw.

Planks with a width of 22 mm are best suited for this. For fasteners, self-tapping screws will be required, and for working off the boards and the surface of the finished product - a sandpaper. It all starts with the markup, which requires a carpenter's pencil and an ordinary ruler. It is best to take a triangle ruler, because with its help it is more convenient to mark the boards from which the box is to be made.

Practically no hand tools are used to cut wood. To make a box, you need a circular saw or jigsaw. Be sure to pay attention to the saw teeth. They should be small and even. Such structures for domestic needs are not made of thick wood. A powerful saw, which is usually used for cutting trees and landscaping, is not needed here. There is one more nuance: starting to saw off the boards, first they make a test cut on the wood to see how it will be sawn, and only then proceed to the main operations. In order not to be mistaken with the dimensions of the finished structure, for this purpose it is best to prepare a "pattern" in advance: to make its bottom and walls from paper. It is very convenient, because then it is enough to attach the "pattern" to the wood and transfer the necessary parameters to the boards.

Once all the wooden parts have been cut out, they are sanded. Then, 3 holes are drilled at the bottom of the side walls of the finished product. The lower ends are coated with wood glue. You will need a dry rag to remove the excess. The components of the box are assembled and strongly pressed against each other. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the drilled holes. Before you finally screw in the screws, you need to check the correct location of all parts of the finished product. To make the toolbox easy to use, a handle from a cylindrical rod is attached to it from above. The rod can be made from wood or metal. How to make similar designs for flowers? Repeat the same operations from the beginning. And on the sides with the help of self-tapping screws, fix the handles so that the flower box is more convenient to use.

Manufacturing of a retractable structure

It is believed: a retractable structure is more difficult to manufacture than an ordinary one. This is indeed the case. Calculations and measurements, when such boxes are made, require more complex ones. Before you start making a retractable structure, you need to decide where it will be located. If you need drawers for the curbstone, it is better to first make one for any other interior item in order to understand the principle of operation and master the manufacturing technology in practice. For a start, it makes sense to try to restore an old cabinet by making drawers for it. First, the doors are removed from it and the door hinges are unscrewed. The "working depth" is measured first. This term means the inner surface of the sidewall, that is, the distance that the boxes move. Each of them has an external part, which is usually called a facade. The bedside table also has a facade. Based on this, all the facades of the boxes are calculated. The height of the front of the curbstone is divided by their number. From the resulting figure, subtract the distance of the gaps, multiplied by their number.

The choice and calculation of guides is the most crucial stage of the work. For a retractable structure, it is best to select full roll-out guides. When you already have experience in the manufacture of retractable bedside tables, it makes sense to switch to roller guides, the installation of which is much more difficult. There is no point in saving money on guides for the drawer. The better they are, the more functional and reliable the piece of furniture will be. The layout of the guides is not as difficult as it seems at first glance, the main thing is to show maximum care. The calculation of the guides starts from the top. On the right and left sides, the top pair of guides will not be distinguished. The marking is carried out at a height equal to half the height of the upper facade. All the following markings are made in accordance with the dimensions of the drawer and the front of the bedside table. As soon as the marking is carried out, they proceed to the manufacture and assembly of the products themselves.

Locking guides

Drawers are best made from solid wood or fiberboard. A furniture handle is required for each drawer. The assembly of fiberboard boxes is almost no different from the assembly of wooden ones, but it has its own nuances. Before proceeding with the installation of the boxes, they glue the edge. For this operation at home, no complicated equipment is needed. Using an iron and a dry rag, the edge is applied to the desired end and gently warmed up with an iron. To trim off excess edging, you need a regular kitchen knife. It should not be sharp so that the laminate that makes up the edge is not damaged. If the box is made of solid wood, this operation is not necessary.

When the boxes are assembled, the guides must be properly reinforced. The full roll-out guides must be divided into 2 parts. The wide part is attached to the side of the cabinet, the narrow one - to the side of the box itself. The guides are fixed with a small offset from the sidewall of the curbstone (by about 3 mm) and then proceed to fastening the fronts of the boxes. First of all, holes are drilled in them for further fastening of the handles. Through the same holes, the facade is attached to the main part of the box.

The first is the rough fastening, as soon as it is completed, it is necessary to check the functioning of the box and only then fix everything completely.

There are various types of fasteners, however, as experts say, it is best to use confirmations for drawers. If the drawers are small, the number of corners is counted in them and the number of required confirmations is obtained. Drawers also need a pattern. The most difficult stage in their manufacture is the bottom. Since the drawer is pull-out, it, unlike an ordinary one, is mounted in 2 stages. First, everything is done on the rough, they check the correct installation of the box in the bedside table and only then they fix everything clean.

If the box is made of solid wood, it is better to open it with varnish immediately after fine assembly. When you need drawers for laundry, and there are no large sheets of wood for them, then you can make them from thin strips. They are suitable for making the frame, bottom and front of the boxes.

And for the manufacture of sidewalls, you can use a plastic mesh, which will provide additional ventilation for things. In some cases, a metal mesh is also used for the manufacture of such boxes.

If you need one large non-drawer for linen, it is made using the same technology as for tools, only the dimensions are adjusted.

The wooden box is a simple but very functional item. Depending on the shape and depth, such products can be used for receiving correspondence, growing seedlings at home, storing children's toys or tools.

The design is quite simple, so wooden flower boxes can be made by hand. If you connect your imagination and apply a little skill, even such an elementary thing can be turned into a real work of art.

Plain wooden box

In fact, this is an ordinary rectangular structure, which is suitable for growing flowers in the country or storing various household items at home.

The advantages of making boxes from wood are due to the fact that it is an environmentally friendly and affordable material, convenient for processing with hand tools.

To assemble such a product, you will need:

  • boards that will go to the bottom and walls;
  • fasteners: screws, nails, metal corners;
  • tools: screwdriver, hammer, wood saw;
  • roulette;
  • simple pencil and paper to prepare the drawing.

First, a drawing is made. A sketch of the finished product is drawn on paper, the main dimensions are determined. The schematic illustration allows you to accurately calculate the material required for the manufacture of the box.

Any boards left after construction or repair are suitable as raw materials. The main thing is that the material is of high quality: there should be no signs of decay and wormholes, otherwise the service life of the box will be short-lived.

The boards are sawn in accordance with the specified dimensions. There should be 5 elements in total: side and front walls, bottom. The boards are hammered together, corners can be placed at the joints to provide the structure with additional rigidity. If the box is supposed to be used for growing flowers indoors, it makes sense to lay a layer of waterproofing made of polyethylene film on the bottom.

Plywood constructions

Here the material is selected depending on the intended use of the finished product. If the box is intended for correspondence, thin plywood can be dispensed with. For seedlings or flowers, multilayer sheets impregnated with a waterproof composition are more suitable.

The construction is made according to the following scheme:

  • draw up a drawing of a box with dimensions;
  • the drawing is transferred to a sheet of plywood;
  • details are cut out according to the markings;
  • individual elements are fastened together with self-tapping screws or nails, the joints are treated with a sealant.

Considering that plywood is easy to process, you can make more complex, non-standard summer cottages. For example, arrange the joints of the walls according to the thorn-groove principle. If a deep box is being made for storing children's toys, wheels from an old computer chair can be attached to the bottom. Drawers with a sliding top panel look interesting. Here, a cover is cut out of a sheet of thin plywood and a groove is cut in the upper part of the walls.

Balcony flower box

The general principle of making a box for flowers from wood with your own hands remains unchanged, however, the specifics of its use make it necessary to take into account a number of nuances.

Depth is of particular importance. Experienced gardeners do not recommend making walls more than 20 centimeters high. Flowers need to be watered regularly, and wet soil significantly increases the weight of the structure.

Balcony boxes should be placed on a solid foundation to exclude the possibility of falling down. For these purposes, metal frames welded from reinforcement bars are usually used. The advantage of this mounting method is that the street box can be easily removed and brought into the house for the winter.

Note! If you intend to paint, it is better to give preference to natural and neutral tones. Bright colors not only quickly fade in the sun, but also hide the natural beauty of plants.

For seedlings

The size and shape of the wooden seedling boxes will depend on how the flowers are grown. Bulky items take up a lot of space and spoil the overall interior of the apartment. Therefore, if you plan to grow cucumbers and tomatoes on the windowsill, it is better to limit yourself to small wooden plywood boxes.

The home plot offers more options for the DIYer. So, a large and functional seedling box can be made from an old pallet. In fact, a pallet is initially a finished product. The gardener can only make the bottom and walls from pieces of plywood. This will require decorative nails and a hammer. After that, the inner space is filled with earth, the seeds are sown between the upper rows of boards.

Pallet application

Several pallets can be made into a deep wooden box with an opening lid for greenhouse growing of horticultural crops. To do this, the pallets are carefully disassembled into their component parts, the nails are removed, the damaged boards are discarded.

The boards are sawn to size, based on the future shape of the box: rectangle or square. For racks, 4 square bars are cut, their length depends on the height of the box.

The boards that will go to the side walls are laid in a row and a straight line is drawn at a distance of 15-20 mm from each edge. In accordance with the markings, a bar is applied and the screws are tightened. The result should be two longitudinal walls. To subsequently equip the box with an inclined lid, the top board of one of the sidewalls must be shortened by 3-5 cm.

Finished boards are installed in parallel, end boards are attached to the support bars. After that, the bottom is made from plywood. If the seedlings are to be grown outdoors, the lower structural element can be neglected.

The lid is made of a rack frame corresponding to the size of the box. The elements are fastened together with flat metal corners. If the drawer has a large area, it is better to reinforce the lid with two longitudinal strips. Using a stapler, a plastic wrap is nailed to the surface of the lid. 2-3 loops are attached to the back of the wall.

At the final stage, all wooden elements are treated with a special disinfectant to prevent rotting and the appearance of bark beetle larvae. For ease of use, the sides of the lid can be supplemented with window clamps that will hold it in a half-open position. Now it remains to fill the box with earth and plant the seeds.

Decoration

Beautifully designed decorative wooden boxes can decorate even a city apartment. Any wood initially has an original texture that you just need to emphasize. It is noteworthy that for this you do not have to bear the financial costs. Ordinary varnish is able to emphasize the natural beauty of a natural material. Before applying on the surface, you can burn out patterns or an interesting pattern.

To age the wood, the boards need to be lightly burned with a burner, then sanded and varnished. Such products look colorful, being an original addition to the interior interior or a worthy decoration of a personal plot.
