Names of plasters. Decorative plaster: types, properties and application technology

For wall decoration, experts use different types of materials. Wallpapers that have been popular for several decades are losing their relevance. And they are being replaced by ultra-modern materials, for example, decorative plaster. It has a number of advantages. With the help of plaster for decoration, builders achieve the effect of marble, metal, granite, silk. With it, you can even imitate denim or moire fabric.

Advantages of decorative plaster

The time and financial investment when working with it are small. Decorative plaster looks good in any setting, although most experts insist that it is only suitable for a classic interior. But if you choose the right color and texture, then such a finish will perfectly complement the decor of other styles.

Decorative plaster tends to hide wall imperfections, such as cracks and uneven surfaces. Thanks to this finish, the room can become a little warmer, because plaster is a good heat insulator.

This type of finishing material consists of natural components, does not absorb odors and does not emit harmful substances. Thanks to this, you can be sure of the environmental friendliness and safety of finishes for health.

This wall covering is characterized by durability, resistance to temperature changes and requires almost no maintenance. Does not have any joints and seams.

Types of decorative plaster by filler

There are several types of fillers for plaster, which determine its type.

Textured. The most common and not very expensive, has a coating relief with a height of 0.2 to 2 millimeters. Fillers - wood fiber, mica, small stones.

Structural. It is filled with fine grains of quartz, and other minerals are also used. Unlike textured plaster, the structural surface is more uniform. The microgranules of which it consists burst after application, and as a result, colored spots appear on the surface.

Venetian. It contains marble "flour", and the pattern accurately imitates marble. The surface has a smooth, mirror structure.

Flock coating. It is more modern and has an interesting appearance. Small colored particles are applied to the adhesive in several layers.

Types of decorative plaster by filler by composition

The composition of the material plays a large role in application and further use. There are several types of plaster depending on its components.

Mineral. Its basis is cement. It is packaged dry and diluted with water before use to form a homogeneous mass. In this process, a special construction mixer is used. Such plaster is additionally painted. The advantage of this type is the low cost, although if there are fillers in the composition (shine, marble chips, etc.), then this type of plaster will cost more.

Acrylic. It is based on acrylic resin. The material is plastic, capable of repelling water, but not resistant to burning, therefore it is recommended to use it away from mineral wool insulation. Working with acrylic plaster is easy. It is easy to apply and texture. But before that, it is necessary to prepare the base and primer very well. This type of plaster has a finished look, so you don’t have to spend time on breeding it. It is necessary to take a closer look at the deadline for the final implementation. If it is nearing the end, it is not recommended to take the plaster, otherwise it will be harder to work with it.

Silicone. It is characterized by high elasticity, durability, suitable for different types of base. The material is modern and versatile. It is easy to look after plaster, it even has property to self-cleaning. Produced in a wide range of colors and sold in finished form.

silicate. Its basis is potash glass. Rarely used indoors, but perfect for facade work.

Basically, decorative plaster is packaged in buckets. Then, if necessary, it is mixed with the necessary additives and applied to the wall. The composition is applied in layers that separate certain periods of time so that the previous layer dries out. Most often used from 2 to 12 layers.

With the help of plaster, you can get a huge number of different decorative effects. The surface is easily cleaned with water or detergent, retains its appearance for a long time and does not react to negative external influences.

The interior decoration of apartments and private houses has long been not limited to wall pasting. Today, the range of materials allows you to realize any original design idea. However, it rightfully occupies a special niche on the shelves of hardware stores. We will present photos in the interior in today's article, but it is worth understanding the types of such building mixtures, understanding how to choose the composition, and whether it is possible. Do not ignore the cost of decorative plaster for walls. And let's start the conversation with the areas of application of this amazing (let's not be afraid of this word) material.

Decorative plaster is a universal finishing material that creates an interior, textures and volumes. Such putty is used in apartments, private houses, cafes, restaurants, hotels ... the list can be continued for a long time. The first mention of such a mixture appeared in the Middle Ages. Then it was made from natural materials. Today, natural stone and other components have replaced acrylic compounds, and the putty itself has become accessible to all segments of the population.

Advantages and disadvantages of such a finishing material

The advantages of such mixtures are many times greater than the disadvantages. Let's try to list them:

  1. when finishing with a decorative mixture, it is not necessary to first level the walls. Surface treatment is limited to the application of primer;
  2. the viscosity of the composition makes it easy to apply it to semicircular surfaces;
  3. When properly applied, seams and joints will not be visible. It seems that the wall was plastered in one continuous layer;
  4. the use of white decorative plaster leaves the master the right to tint. The paint is added while stirring the mixture;
  5. an extensive assortment makes it possible to choose the style of interior planned by the home master;
  6. additional protection in the form of special varnishes keeps the plastered surface from abrasion;
  7. water-based putties are subject to restoration in case of chipping.

Against the background of the listed positive aspects, the disadvantages are lost, but we cannot ignore them:

  1. no such finishing material is used, erected less than 5 years ago. Drawdown, mandatory in such cases, contributes to the appearance of cracks on the walls. The same applies to buildings in a seismic zone;
  2. such coatings are not tolerated. If a special varnish protects from a small level, then it will not help in the bathroom;
  3. a weighty “against” argument for home craftsmen is the high cost of putty, although today the price has decreased compared to the level of two or three years ago.

Decorative plaster: species names with photo examples

The main types are called structural, texture and Venetian plaster. However, do not forget about the types that mimic expensive materials. These include marble, flock (silk) or marbled putty. Each of these types is special in its own way, and therefore we will consider them in detail, having familiarized ourselves with photographs of walls plastered with various mixtures and methods.

The properties of all species are identical and depend on the components of the mixture (we will discuss this in detail below), but the appearance is different.

Textured finishing material and its appearance

The name of the species already indicates that the applied finishing material has a distinct texture. It is not difficult to apply such a coating, the cost is relatively low, which makes the mixture popular among master finishers.

There are 3 main textures - this is a “lamb” (the coating resembles animal hair with curls), “fur coat” (gradually losing popularity) and “bark beetle” (more difficult to apply, looks like a tree with grooves similar to the result of the work of a bark beetle).

Photos of textured decorative plaster for interior work can be seen below:

Helpful information! This material has a very significant advantage - the result is noticeable immediately after application. To see it, you do not need to wait for complete drying.

What is the difference between structural putty

The peculiarity of this mixture is that the master never knows what the surface structure will be like after complete drying. It will not work to set a certain direction for the patterns. Such mixtures should not be applied in wet areas. If you want to finish the bathroom walls with such material, you need to ensure low air humidity until the putty is completely dry. We offer you to familiarize yourself with the photo of wall decoration with structural decorative plaster:

Venetian plaster and its features

Applying this putty requires experience and skill. A home master who has not done such work is unlikely to be able to do everything right. This smooth decorative stucco looks like marble when applied, matt or glossy, depending on the finish. The difficulty in its use lies in the fact that the surface before application requires careful preparation.

Interesting information! With the help of such material, you can create the appearance of not only natural stone, but also various precious metals. This effect is achieved by adding special pigments to the mixture.

One of the varieties of this type of application can be called Leonardo plaster, the photo of which is presented in a small gallery:

Flock or silk plaster: photos in the interior and some advantages

After application and topcoat, it looks like flowing silk with mother-of-pearl overflows. On the shelves it is presented in the following colors: golden, silver, bronze or garnet tone, as well as white, which can be tinted.

Good to know! Washable decorative plaster is not recommended to be cleaned with hard metal brushes or abrasive products. To remove contaminants, gel-based products without caustic chemical components are suitable.

Photos of the interiors of the hallway with decorative plaster are presented below:

Features of applying decorative plaster in the bedroom

There are no differences in composition from the previous version. Any types and compositions are applicable. But if a light shade is more acceptable in the hallway, then the bedroom needs a dark, deep color scheme. The use of a mixed interior is welcome here. Materials such as, or embossed gypsum panels are compatible with putty. An interesting option with fabric - drapery gives a peculiar charm to the room and intimacy to the atmosphere.

Helpful information! The bedroom is a room in which mechanical damage to the walls is minimized, unlike the corridor. This means that wax can be used as a top coat. It will give the wall a gloss that visually resembles a glass coating.

Use of decorative plaster in the toilet and bathroom

For such premises, a material resistant to moisture is needed. As with the kitchen, acrylic or silicate mixtures are a good choice. Plaster for such premises is more expensive, due to the inclusion of impurities in its composition that prevent the appearance of fungus and mold. Often, for such purposes, facade mixtures are used for outdoor finishing work.

Important information! Despite the fact that the “bark beetle” plaster is resistant to moisture, it is not worth it to decorate bathrooms and bathrooms. Water will accumulate in the grooves, which over time will lead to rusty or lime stains on the walls. Moreover, their appearance does not depend on the color or shade of the wall.

Decorative plaster: photo in the interior of the living room

Here there is where the fantasies of a home master can roam. Various combinations of materials, playing with color and putty application styles, and even the possibility of plastering the ceiling under “Venetian” or “silk”. The ceiling option, with the right approach, will help make the living room bigger and taller (visually of course). It should be understood that if the entrance hall gives the first impressions of the owners, then the living room is the soul of the whole house or apartment, where a lot of time will be spent. This indicates the need for tinting in light colors. Mother-of-pearl and metallic shades, like gold, silver or bronze, will help to add expressiveness. But they should not be abused.

Using several different techniques for applying plaster, you can create a panel, landscape or picture on the wall - this already depends on the artistic skills of the master. In the absence of experience or desire to perform such work, you can turn to professional plasterers for help, but not a single experienced master will be able to bring to life what the owner himself will do. We agree that it is difficult, but nothing is impossible. The work will progress slowly, but the result will amaze not only the guests, but also the home master himself.

A few reviews about decorative plaster from netizens

The picture would not be complete without feedback on the decorative plaster of people who finished their houses and apartments with such mixtures.

Milakisa, Russia, Yekaterinburg: I am a designer. I try to test all new interesting interior solutions in my apartment before offering them to the customer. So I first applied decorative plaster to the walls in my bathroom, and after that I began to include it in design projects for the client. The choice in favor of this material fell due to the fact that it is very practical. From above, the resulting three-dimensional pattern is covered with a special wax, thanks to which the walls can be wiped with a wet cloth. And I also like the non-repeating relief pattern of this coating, since it is applied by hand, then each section of the wall is not similar to the next one ...

And one more.

NadiZZZ, Russia, Nizhny Tagil: We are not designers, but when it comes to renovating an apartment, we want something new and original. I agreed with my husband on decorative plaster. Although this is a rather dreary and labor-intensive business. Moroccan plaster is a decorative coating with a medium-sized texture in the form of elevated areas (“islands”) of applied plaster above the main surface. The texture of the surface of such plaster is smooth, pleasant to the touch. (...) We are glad that everything is done! Enjoy the view! A little more about this type of plaster: it is hypoallergenic, easily tolerates wet cleaning, has a long warranty period, is easily repaired and restored, and can withstand high loads.

How to make a mixture for decorative plaster yourself

Consider the option of preparing bark beetle plaster. To do this, you need to purchase a dry finishing putty, white primer and grout for tile joints. As a filler, we buy marble or granite chips. The size of the fractions determines how wide the grooves will be.

Historians claim that mankind began to use plaster for wall decoration four centuries ago. Then such material was used to decorate the chambers of representatives of the Italian nobility. In those days, technologies were not only exclusive, but also very labor intensive.

The complexity of creating drawings, applications, ornaments and patterns on the surface was not without reason equated to real art. Modern people who want to ennoble their homes and give the interior an elegant, complete look, manage to get by with “little blood”. And in this they have been helped by decorative coatings of the latest generation for more than a decade.

General characteristics of materials

At your service, proven coating techniques, video instructions, every conceivable and unimaginable set of tools and special devices and, of course, a variety of innovative plasters are provided. ROGNEDA Group of Companies offers you a rich collection of matte and glossy, smooth and embossed, monochrome and multi-colored finishes of TM DALI-DECOR®, which stand out among other materials with a number of useful and attractive characteristics:

  • ecological impeccability - only safe components are present in the mixtures;
  • amazing durability - time, temperature changes, moisture, ultraviolet rays have no power over the decorative and operational properties of the material. You can safely carry out wet cleaning using detergents for such walls;
  • unique solutions - you can make the interior or exterior of the house truly exclusive, because the very technology of applying such a solution implies that the identical color and texture of the relief or pattern will not be found anywhere else.
  • lightness - the plaster coating has a relatively low weight, which avoids additional stress on walls and structures;
  • strength and elasticity - for any type of filler used, which is stone chips of various shapes and sizes, the product forms a layer on the surface that endures mechanical stress and loads;
  • an affordable price, which, coupled with a practically unlimited shelf life of the material, will allow you to significantly save on repairs and at the same time not remember about “cosmetics” for many years to come.

Properties of different types of plasters

Above were listed those characteristics of decorative plaster that modern coatings have in general. In accordance with the accepted classification, such finishing materials are divided according to the type of base. So, a natural or synthetic material can act as a link. Each type of product has its own properties and application features.

Mineral plaster. The role of the base is played by cement, to which various additives can be added to improve the operational and decorative characteristics of the coating. In particular, the components are designed to provide attractive relief. The filler can be sand, stone or granite chips, etc. Finishing is used not only for exteriors, but also for interiors: since it is not afraid of moisture, it can be safely used, for example, for processing walls and ceilings in the bathroom. Among other advantages of the material, the most affordable price should be noted. Mineral coating is recommended for use on similar mineral substrates.

silicate plaster. The composition is made on the basis of "liquid glass" or, scientifically, potassium or sodium silicate. This coating is characterized by excellent vapor permeability, water repellency and fire safety. The composition is universal - it can be used to treat almost any type of surface. The material can be called a "long-liver" - its service life reaches more than 50 years, because it is not afraid of loads and the influence of external factors. The properties of decorative plaster fully justify its price.

Silicone plaster. Excellent adhesion to the treated surface is ensured by synthetic resins present in the composition as a binder component. The coating technology is very simple - due to its plasticity, the silicone mixture "obediently" behaves even with a novice in repair. You can use the solution on any type of base, indoors and when carrying out outdoor work.

Acrylic plaster. Acrylic resin acts as a binder here. The coating initially has the consistency of a solution that is ready for use. The material is perfect for working with any surface, has elasticity, strength, resistance to moisture and aggressive influences, excellent durability and many other competitive properties.

Decorative plaster types

More and more types of which do not require further finishing when decorating walls and ceilings are coming into fashion. I must say - it is very comfortable, quite beautiful and stylish. And if we take into account the fact that the plaster is made mainly from natural materials, then it is safe, in the sense of ecology.

Types of decorative plaster

The building material has two main areas of application:

  • outdoor;
  • internal.

There is also a universal decorative plaster used both indoors and on the facades of buildings.

Types of decorative plasters for walls and ceilings include the following elements:

  • binder;
  • filler;
  • additives (in the form of thickeners, solvents, antiseptics, water-repellent substances).

We think it is worth stopping at each element of decorative plaster and considering them in more detail.

The base of the decorative coating

The binder, in turn, can be water-based and based on natural or synthetic resins.

Decorative plaster for ceilings and walls based on polyurethanes have high wear resistance, strength, resistance to aggressive operating conditions, excellent adhesion in the list of their advantages. Polyurethane-based coatings are used in both indoor and outdoor applications.

Along with the advantages, there are also disadvantages. It can be noted that decorative plaster based on polyurethanes does not burn after complete drying, but when heated above 140 ° C, the resins that make up the decorative wall coating begin to release substances that have a detrimental effect on the human body.

As for water-based coatings, we can say that things are much better with safety.

When heated, decorative plaster types of which have a water base do not emit harmful substances, but are inferior in other parameters. Binders for water-based plasters are acrylic, styrene-acrylic, polyvinyl acetate and butadiene-styrene components.

Decorative plaster, which includes acrylic resin, is resistant to ultraviolet radiation and heat up to 90 ° C, and also has good water-repellent properties.

Styrene-acrylic bases repel water even more actively, have good vapor conductivity and UV resistance, but already when heated above 65 ° C, they acquire a yellowish tint.

Butadiene - styrene bases have the highest level of moisture resistance, but they also acquire a yellow tint at 65 ° C and above, and do not have vapor conductivity properties at all.

Polyvinyl acetate bases are limitedly resistant to water, but they are resistant to ultraviolet, in the form of direct sunlight and heating up to 90 ° C.

Filler for decorative plaster

Varieties of decorative plaster also differ in the type of filler. With them, everything is much easier. Manufacturers use several types of natural stone, crushed to crumbs, ranging in size from 0.5 to 5 mm.

The crumb of each of the materials used for the production of decorative coatings has its own unique properties:

  • granite chips, has an average level of adhesion with binding bases, as well as good resistance to mechanical damage (for example, scratches);
  • quartz chips, has the same basic properties as granite chips;
  • marble chips, unlike the first two samples, have excellent adhesion to the base, but the resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage is low.

Decorative plaster is subdivided according to the types of formed surface

The composition of decorative plaster directly affects the method of applying the material to the surface. There are several such ways:

  • homogeneous - rough;
  • furrowed;
  • simulated.

Finishing walls or ceilings with decorative plaster is a very simple procedure. And if you consider the fact that you have to improvise a little, it can even be called pleasant. So that this pleasant procedure is not overshadowed, you need to do some manipulations before buying decorative plaster.

For each type of coating, you need to select the material that suits this coating more than others. Information on the compatibility of plaster with various types of coatings can be found on the labels. We strongly recommend that you read this information.

Before buying, be sure to check the expiration date of the material, if it has expired, working with such decorative plaster can turn into flour.

And finally, about the fact that decorative plaster, the types of which, as you have seen, can be different, are sent from the place of manufacture to retail outlets, in various forms:

  • dry mixes (which you can independently prepare for work);
  • ready-to-use mixtures.

The most popular types of finishing coating in our country today:

  • Venetian plaster;
  • decorative (the so-called roller plaster);
  • textured plaster "sea breeze".
