How to insulate a chimney pipe with your own hands: the choice of insulation, preparation and implementation of thermal insulation work. How to make chimney pipe insulation - proven and reliable options How to wrap pipes

Having your own country house, you need to take care of heating the rooms in the cold season. A stove or other heating system needs a chimney. The smoke exhaust pipe is the main element of the heat supply communications. For its effective functioning, it is necessary to insulate the chimney from the outside.

The relevance of thermal insulation

Moisture and smoke generated during fuel combustion are aggressive factors affecting a brick chimney. The temperature difference in the cold season and the accumulated moisture deposited on the walls fills the microcracks with water, and the stone structure collapses from the inside. Small ice crystals crush from the inside and destroy it. An insulated chimney allows you to exclude this.
In the process of combustion, condensate is formed on the surface of the gas duct, which contains a chemical series of oxides. Interacting, the elements form weak acids (carbonic, sulfuric, etc.) that can destroy the metal surface. It is for this reason that the chimney must be insulated.
Correct implementation of the installation of thermal insulation allows you to prevent a fire inside the premises and will not allow the roof overlap to ignite. Well-heated chimney pipes improve traction in the fireplace, boiler and stove, there is less tar and burning residue in it. The efficiency of the heating unit is significantly increased.

Positive factors of insulated chimney

Before answering the question - how to insulate a pipe, it is necessary to highlight the advantages of an insulated chimney.
The insulated gas outlet protects the heating system from the effects of the external environment and combustion products. Of course, thermal insulation cannot completely protect the structure from destruction, but it will extend its service life. This is due to the following factors:

  1. Pipe insulation allows maintaining the thermal balance in the middle of the structure, excluding the possibility of aggressive acids and condensate falling onto the walls. The combustion products are completely volatilized together with the smoke stream.
  2. Chimney insulation minimizes the possibility of temperature differences between the cooled flue duct and hot steam.
  3. Energy saving properties are increased, contributing to fuel economy.
  4. The strength of the steam outlet structure increases due to the reinforcing frame.

Correctly selected chimney insulation increases the frost-resistant properties of the system, ensures long-term preservation of its appearance and increases the service life, which is very important.

The choice of material for thermal insulation

The main question of the owners of country houses with an autonomous heating system is how to insulate the chimney. In order to reliably insulate the outlets for the furnace or boiler, materials with a high degree of thermal insulation are used to ensure the heat balance of the chimney on the roof.

Basalt insulation

Relevant for insulating a chimney with mineral wool or basalt. Insulation is obtained from a molten volcanic rock - gabbo-basalt. It is converted into fibers, so that the insulating material has the following advantages:

  • retains up to 95% heat;
  • is characterized by good vapor permeability;
  • differs in chemical and corrosion resistance;
  • prevents the growth of fungus and mold on the surface of the chimney on the roof;
  • vibration and heat resistant;
  • made of ecological materials;
  • does not undergo destruction under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Stainless steel casing

Metal "armor" in the form of a pipe made of stainless steel is used as an option for insulation. It is able to provide full protection against mechanical damage, moisture and other aggressive factors.
The chimney cover is mounted on a pipe on the roof. The intertube space is filled with basalt wool, the outside is covered with insulation, 5 cm thick. An asbestos chimney can be wrapped with this insulation.

Wood shields

Wooden shields are considered one of the simplest options for insulating a chimney. Thermal insulation is made in the form of a timber frame made of plates of the appropriate size. On top of it, slate or other flooring is fixed, from which the roof of the dwelling is made.
After the pipe is completely covered with wood, the empty cavity is filled with felt, slag, sand, mineral wool. Frame seams must be covered with a waterproofing compound.

Slag-reinforced concrete insulation slabs

Insulation of a chimney in a private house using iron and slag concrete slabs provides the smallest distance between the joints on the structure. The space inside and the corners are reinforced with mesh or wire, gypsum, clay and sand are poured in the form of a solution. Plaster is applied over the tile insulation.

Specificity of insulation works

When insulating the chimney with our own hands, we take into account that during the operation of the heating boiler, the temperature in the flue duct can reach 200-300 degrees.

In the quality of insulation, it is better to choose a material with high heat-resistant properties: glass wool, mineral wool, basalt.

In the building materials market, thermal insulation is sold in the form of finished cylinders with a special foil screen. With their help, the gas duct and the adjacent roof elements are made out - protecting them from fire and the ingress of cold air. Tubular structures are sold in different diameters, which allows to wrap different sized smoke outlets.

Thermal insulation installation regulations

Before insulating the chimney pipe, you need to make sure that it is installed correctly.

The flue is carried out in accordance with the technological standards specified in GOST 52953-2008

  1. The combustion products outlet pipe should be 5 m high. This indicator provides optimal draft in the heating system.
  2. A distance of at least 250 mm is required between the roof overlap and the outer element of the boiler room.
  3. If the building is covered with combustible materials, in particular, slate, roofing felt, ondulin, then the insulated smoke exhaust structure must be equipped with a spark arrester.

After making sure that the system is installed correctly, you can proceed to the subsequent work on winding with thermal insulation.

The main methods of insulation

The metal chimney pipe is insulated using various methods.

Steel chimney insulation technique

The chimney is insulated using a special solution. The composition is prepared from a dry mixture and water. The solution is applied with a spatula to the surface, spreading over the entire area. Then a fiberglass reinforcing frame is fixed on it, on which plaster is applied.

Gas boiler flue gas insulation

Insulation for pipes of a gas boiler must have a number of increased heat-insulating and heat-resistant qualities.

Sandwich structures block the deposition of condensate on the surface, while saving energy.

The sandwich chimney consists of a layer of mineral wool and two metal pipes. The upper element, with a large diameter, is the main sleeve, the smaller one is part of the steam outlet.
How to insulate such a chimney pipe with your own hands? It is necessary to follow the recommendations:

  1. Holes with a diameter of 25 cm larger than the chimney duct are made in the roof of the roof and ceilings.
  2. At this stage, it is necessary to insulate the chimney pipe with a layer of basalt wool. The thickness of the winding must be at least 5 cm.
  3. The insulation around the pipe is fixed with steel wire.
  4. A larger casing is worn on top.

Upon completion of the work, the chimney is connected to a heating source and the surrounding riser is filled with expanded clay, clay or asbestos.

Smoke vents for a bath

Insulation of the chimney in the bath is aimed at improving the heat transfer of the heating source, which is a stone stove.

You can isolate the chimney in the steam room using the following options:

  • thermal insulation is a material made of polyethylene foam hidden between foil sheets. Insulation rolls with a thickness of 2 - 10 mm are offered on the market. The foil surface reduces overheating of the pipe. The insulation is wrapped around the chimney, fixing it with wire or metallized tape;
  • Filgoizol consists of two balls: foil, which saves over 90% of the heat in the room, and a heat insulator. The material is used to cover the walls and ceilings of the sauna, providing a thermos effect;
  • sandwich pipe, consisting of several sections. This option is suitable for saunas and baths with an iron stove.

Insulating a metal pipe means ensuring optimal functioning of the heating system. Correct installation of chimney insulation with your own hands allows you to increase the operational life of the structure and heat generator, and also prevents fire.

When building your own home ownership, as a rule, they equip a fireplace or stove. Therefore, the problem of removing the chimney is so urgent. Correctly and reliably made insulation is important for the chimney, otherwise it is impossible to be sure about the fire department of the safe and comfortable stay of family members in the house.

If the stove is already laid out, and the smoke exhaust structure rises above the roof of the building, this does not mean that the work on its arrangement has been successfully completed. Before using the heating unit, you still need to decide how to insulate the chimney pipe on the roof and, as a result, protect the house from leaks and fire.

It is advisable to think about this problem before the design of the furnace is drawn up, and then the insulation will turn out to be more reliable. As for the previously built chimney, such work is almost always associated with changes made to the structure of floors and roofs. Regardless of the decision on how to insulate the chimney on the roof, all the costs incurred will be made up for with a sense of safety, and hence comfort.

Types of insulation of chimney structures

Pipe insulation for the furnace should be made from negative factors:

  • from possible overheating of the chimney structure;
  • from leaks at the joints.

Therefore, when deciding how to wrap the chimney pipe, special attention should be paid to fireproofing thermal insulation and waterproofing. Experts recommend performing insulation measures in a comprehensive manner. This will help to solve not only the above problems, but also to improve the operating conditions of the furnace unit.

For example, if thermal insulation of a chimney laid through an unheated attic space is performed, the possibility of overheating of wooden roofing elements decreases and the risk of condensation, which leads to corrosion, increased soot deposition or pipe destruction, is reduced. which does not ignite. Waterproofing the flue structure will protect the rafter system and ceilings from decay.

Fire insulation options for smoke exhaust systems

The simplest and most reliable, but expensive way to insulate a chimney is to install a sandwich type chimney made of metal or ceramics.

In such structures, the inner pipe intended for smoke removal is made of heat-resistant steel or ceramics, while non-combustible materials are used for its thermal insulation - mineral, stone or basalt wool (read also: ""). The outer part of the chimney sandwich is made of steel or expanded clay concrete blocks.

The kits for prefabricated chimneys include elements for fixing the structure, revision, maintenance and for connecting heating units. Their installation is simple, but you still need to follow the instructions in order to fully ensure safety.

There is another option used during the installation of the furnace unit - the construction of a brick chimney. Due to the low degree of thermal conductivity of bricks, its walls will not heat up to extremely high temperatures and, as a result, additional measures related to its insulation will not be required (in more detail: ""). It will only be necessary to correctly perform the fire-prevention cutting of the floors and roof.

In order to save and reduce weight, sometimes the construction of a brick chimney is completed by installing a ceramic or metal pipe. In this case, thermal insulation is made according to the technology described below.

When such work is done for single pipes, boxes made of non-combustible materials can be used. Chimneys of this type are allowed to be operated without thermal insulation, but fire-prevention splitting is required in accordance with the rules.

Chimney waterproofing methods

Chimneys should be waterproofed where they are led out onto the roof. The further they are from the ridge, and the larger the pipe, the more difficult the operating conditions will be.

Precipitation, in the event that the insulation of the chimney pipe is insufficient, begins to penetrate into the interior of the building. As a result, leaks occur, the floors rot and collapse.

The method of waterproofing usually depends on the shape of the pipe and the material from which the roof covering is made. For round products, either metal or polymer cuts are used, and for pipes with a rectangular section - aprons and metal abutment strips.

Chimney insulation

Before insulating the pipe on the roof, you should make sure that the requirements specified in SNiP 2.04.05-91 are met, and if any deficiencies are found, eliminate them:

  1. To ensure the required traction force and prevent the furnace gases from exceeding the temperature of the furnace gases, the height of the pipe should start from 5 meters.
  2. When the roof covering is made of roofing material, slate or other combustible material, a spark arrester is installed on top of the pipe, which is a metal mesh with small cells.
  3. A gap of at least 25 centimeters must be left between combustible elements such as floors, rafters and walls and the chimney.
  4. A fire-prevention distance is maintained from the upper ceiling of the stove to the ceiling. For metal units, it is at least 150 centimeters, for brick ovens with two-row overlap –50 centimeters, with three-row overlap –25 centimeters, provided that the ceiling surface above the heater is finished with non-combustible materials.

In the place where the brick chimney crosses the ceiling, they equip a fluff with a thickness of 1 - 1.5 bricks.

Insulation materials for bath pipes

It will be a mistake to decide to insulate the pipe in the bath by attaching an iron sheet to the ceiling, since it gets very hot. As an option, than to overlay the chimney, use refractory red brick, but in this case, you need to strengthen the foundation.

When solving the problem of how to wrap a metal chimney pipe in a bath, experts distinguish foil insulation and thermal insulation.

Plastering a pipe made of bricks

The outer surface of brick pipes heats up slightly, so they are plastered to improve operating conditions and extend their service life. The most affordable option for insulating chimneys from bricks is plastering with a solution using lime and cement. In its composition, instead of sand, you can add slag crumb, pre-sieved.

A layer of plaster, when there is a lot of unevenness on the pipe, turns out to be quite thick, therefore, first it is better to seal up all the existing drops and cracks on the surface with a solution, and then cover it with a reinforcing mesh.

Plastering is performed in two layers, using the entire pipe. For the first time, the solution is brought to the thickness of sour cream and applied by spraying and not leveled. For the next layer, the composition is made thicker. It is applied with a trowel and then rubbed until a smooth surface is obtained.

Use of asbestos cement sheets

Such a method of insulation for chimney pipes made of bricks, such as sheathing of pipes with asbestos-cement materials, in terms of heat saving, surpasses plastering several times. Asbestos cement slabs are glued to the outer surface with a cement-lime mortar.

After preparation of the composition, the smoke exhaust structure is reinforced with a mesh, and the first layer is applied by spraying. When it dries, the asbestos-cement slabs are cut according to the size of the pipe. The next layer of the mixture is applied to the pieces of insulation and attached to the surface of the chimney.

But this method has a big drawback - asbestos contains carcinogens and therefore cannot be used in residential premises.

Insulation of single metal pipes

The most dangerous option for arranging a chimney in terms of fire safety is a pipe made of metal products, which is not protected by a heat insulator. The distance between it and wood or plastic elements must be at least 60 centimeters.

But even the presence of such a gap is not able to protect against burns in case of accidental contact - for this reason, it is advisable to isolate the pipe until problems arise.

When deciding how to wrap a pipe in a bathhouse or a house, if it is single, this is the use of a non-combustible insulation, for example, basalt wool, which is protected from above with metal or plaster. This heat insulator has a melting point of 1000 degrees.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Mats of 5 cm thickness, consisting of basalt wool, are laid with an overlap around the pipe and fixed with steel wire.
  2. The heat-insulated chimney is wrapped with a reinforcing mesh, fixed and plaster is applied on top in two layers.
  3. Instead of plastering, you can use thin sheet iron, which is folded and riveted at the point where the edges meet.

Floor insulation

There is a certain order of how to insulate the chimney pipe in the ceiling:

  1. Holes are made in the ceilings and the roof for laying the smoke exhaust structure so that a distance of at least 25 -35 centimeters remains from their edge to the walls of the pipes (read: "").
  2. The edges of the holes are covered with metal or asbestos-cement sheets or equipped with a thermal insulating box.
  3. The space around the pipes is tightly filled with thermal insulation wool.
  4. Wooden structures located near the chimney passages are covered with special - fire retardant compounds.

Having figured out how to insulate and how to wrap a pipe in a bathhouse or house, you can do this work without much effort.

But even a high-quality insulated chimney should be operated correctly:

  • clean soot at least 3 times throughout the year;
  • remove ash from the stove in a timely manner;
  • do not burn foreign objects and materials in the unit.

Foreword... Consider how to insulate a pipe in a bath yourself. There are two solutions here. The first is making sandwich pipes for a stove in a bath with your own hands and a more practical, but expensive way - buying a ready-made sandwich chimney and installing it. How to properly insulate a pipe in a bath is an important question, since it affects the service life of the chimney and fire safety, minimizing the risk of fire in the ceiling ceilings.

Thermal insulation of an iron chimney in a bath has important goals. The first is to ensure the fire safety of the premises and increase the efficiency of the sauna stove. Second, the insulated boiler chimney heats up much faster, so condensate inside the pipe does not have time to accumulate and does not lead to rapid metal corrosion. We will tell you how to insulate the pipe in the bathhouse yourself and how to install it.

Is it necessary to insulate the chimney pipe in the bath

The chimney in the bath should be made of two parts. The lower part is a chimney without insulation, it will give off its heat in the steam room, warming up the room faster. For the device of the lower part of the chimney, you should buy a ready-made pipe of a suitable diameter made of galvanized or stainless steel. Despite the fact that stainless steel is more expensive, it looks aesthetically pleasing and will serve many times more than galvanized steel.

Pipes without insulation can be quickly replaced if necessary, without disturbing the thermal insulation of the chimney through the ceiling. The connection of the lower non-insulated chimney and the insulated sandwich pipe must be made before overlapping the ceiling using a starting sandwich. The use of sandwich pipes will protect the overheating of the steam room ceiling and reduce the amount of condensation inside the pipe.

How to insulate a pipe in a bath with your own hands

The upper part of the chimney passing through the ceiling should be made of sandwich pipes. Their advantage is that there is already a layer of thermal insulation inside, as a result of which the outer pipe does not heat up and significantly reduces the risk of fire in wooden floors. In addition, during the cold season, the thermal insulation layer prevents the formation of condensation in the metal chimney, reducing the risk of pipe corrosion in the future.

To connect single-wall and sandwich pipes, an adapter (starting sandwich) is used. If you save money and do not buy a starting sandwich, then basalt insulation can crumble from the pipe during its operation. In addition, the characteristics of mineral wool are such that it absorbs moisture from the air. This can lead to corrosion of the metal chimney pipes, since the steam room has high humidity.

If you decide to save money and you have enough basalt thermal insulation, after the boiler room is insulated and there are several sheets of steel, then you can make an insulated chimney for the bath yourself. First, calculate the required height of the future chimney, as well as the diameter of the starting chimney of the stove, so that the pipe fits in size. So, we proceed to the insulation and installation of chimney pipes.

Making insulated pipes with your own hands:

1 ... to begin with, we cut out two rectangles of the required size from a sheet of metal and roll them up into cylinders;

2 ... we wrap a pipe of a smaller diameter with non-combustible insulation, put on a pipe of a larger diameter on top;

3 ... we fasten the prepared pipe with a clamp from above and below, we make the required number of pipes;

4 ... to the end of one pipe we weld a strip along the circumference from the end to protect the insulation from precipitation.

Before installing the pipes in the bath, you should prepare - in the ceiling above the stove, you need to make a hole 20 mm larger than the diameter of the chimney, and another hole is made in the roof. Then a square is cut out of a sheet of metal, it must completely cover the hole in the ceiling. A hole is cut inside the square, equal to the diameter of the pipe, and holes for self-tapping screws are drilled along the edges of the metal sheet.

Do-it-yourself installation of an insulated pipe in a bath

We connect the pipes made earlier. We put on a non-insulated pipe on the chimney of the sauna stove and put a metal sheet with a hole on it, so that it can then be fixed on the ceiling of the steam room from the inside. In front of the ceiling, it is necessary to put a starting sandwich on the pipe and continue to put on the already insulated pipes. We attach a galvanized sheet to the ceiling with self-tapping screws that you put on the chimney pipe earlier.

The technology for installing a chimney from ready-made sandwich pipes is no different from that described above. Despite the high cost of factory sandwich pipes and necessary components for the chimney. The finished products will look more aesthetically pleasing and will last much longer, especially the stainless steel chimney in the steam room. A cap should be put on the top of the chimney to protect the chimney and the stove from rain and snow.

How to insulate an attic in a bathhouse near a pipe

You can beautifully insulate the attic near the chimney

Do-it-yourself installation of the insulated chimney in the bathhouse, it remains only to beautifully insulate the attic in the bathhouse near the chimney. Expanded clay or clay is poured onto a sheet of metal from the side of the attic of the bath between the chimney and the floorboards. Styrofoam and other combustible insulation are not suitable for this purpose. The most inexpensive way to insulate the attic of a bathhouse near the chimney is to use expanded clay, aerated concrete or clay.

When self-insulating a pipe in a bath, many are guided by their budget, and someone, first of all, cares about the practicality and attractive appearance of the entire structure. You already know how to insulate the chimney pipe in the bath. Additionally, you can make sure that you can simply make an insulated chimney in the bath yourself by watching the video posted below with instructions for installing sandwich pipes in the steam room.

Video. How and what to insulate the chimney pipe in the bath

And its insulation is a mandatory process during construction, which has two goals: fire safety and corrosion protection.

If you do not make thermal insulation, then under the influence of temperature differences, condensation will form, gradually flowing inward and contributing to the destruction of the structure itself.

Insulated smoke ducts warm up faster, which makes it work much more efficiently.

Depending on what the chimney of the bath is made of, various materials are used for its thermal insulation.

There are several types of already insulated chimneys for a bath stove, the most common of which are stainless steel. A good option is ceramic sections, which are already installed in expanded clay concrete modules.

Why insulate the chimney

During the operation of a sauna stove, its chimney gets hot, and the inevitable proximity to combustible materials can lead to a fire.

If the chimney is made of bricks, it heats up less, and if the chimney is made of metal, then much more.

Metal pipes are heated above 600 ° C, and their proximity to the wooden paneling of the steam room is very dangerous, especially if there is a bath.

The second, no less important problem is the appearance of condensation in the chimney. Condensate is the main enemy of all flue gas systems.

It is not just moisture that forms on the walls of the chimney, but an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, which is capable of destroying almost any material. It appears as a result of the passage of heated air through the still cold chimney.

As a result of the effect of condensate on non-insulated masonry, it collapses, since it has the properties to penetrate into microcracks in the brick, and when freezing, it expands. Metal chimneys are also very susceptible to condensation.

Metal of ordinary grades is not resistant to acids, therefore, from the effect of condensate on it, it very quickly deteriorates.

The only way to combat the appearance of condensation is to isolate the flue gas ducts, in which the pipe will cool less, and the sauna stove will quickly enter the operating mode of combustion.

Insulation materials

Chimneys can be insulated using various methods, using non-combustible materials.

The most common are:

  1. Chimney thermal insulation basalt wool and glass wool... Insulation materials used both for large surfaces of brick chimneys and pipes of relatively small diameter. Available as filler, in rolls or in the form of mats. For its use, it is recommended to manufacture an additional casing.
  2. Backfilling method around the chimney heat-insulating material: expanded clay, slag, bricks, special heat-insulating granules. This method involves the manufacture of an additional chimney casing.
  3. ... This is the most common, until recently, method of insulating brick chimneys. For this, a slag-lime mortar was used, applied with a layer of 5-7 cm on a reinforcing mesh. After drying, a sand-cement mortar of the same thickness was applied to it. But when the smoke exhaust system was heated and cooled, such insulation cracked and required annual repair, therefore this method is considered unjustified in terms of labor costs and efficiency.
  4. Chimney insulation with modern materials foamed polyethylene... "Teploizol" or "Folgoizol" is produced in rolls, has a low weight and good elasticity, it is well cut, which makes it accessible to work with even non-professionals. This is the simplest and most inexpensive way to insulate chimneys, which is widely used today.

The choice of insulation

The choice of insulation, for the insulation of the chimney, must be approached carefully and seriously. You should not buy the cheapest one, because it must have good thermal insulation properties, be convenient to work with, not require additional reinforcement of the supporting structures of the roof and ceilings, be non-toxic and non-combustible.

Stone or basalt wool is a wonderful thermal insulation made from basalt rock.

This insulation can withstand prolonged exposure to sufficiently high temperatures and does not burn, even when in contact with an open fire. When heated, it does not emit any toxic or unpleasant odors. Such insulation can be safely called an environmentally friendly material.

Glass wool is a type of mineral wool insulation made on the basis of waste from the glass industry. There are a lot of voids between its fibers, so it retains heat well.

Glass wool does not burn and does not absorb moisture, is not subject to decay and rodents. It is inexpensive and easy to use. Most often it is produced in slabs and rolls.

Teploizol or foiloizol are multifunctional types of insulation made of foamed polyethylene and covered with a sheet of aluminum foil. It is produced in rolls and has a thickness of 2 to 10 mm. They can remarkably insulate the chimney of a bath, since these heaters can withstand heating up to 150C ° -170C °.

Do-it-yourself installation of insulation

Chimney insulation with mineral, basalt or glass wool can be done in two ways: insulation under a casing or insulation of a chimney without a casing.

In order to insulate the chimney with mineral wool mats, you need to cut out several pieces of the slab from them, which will correspond to the sides of the pipe from the outside.

Then, using wire stitching, fix them on the chimney.

Important! There should be no voids between the layer of thermal insulation, otherwise the insulation will lose its effectiveness.

To insulate a metal pipe, you need to wrap it with basalt wool and secure it with wire around the entire perimeter. After that, put a second pipe of a larger diameter on the chimney to make a kind of sandwich.

This method of thermal insulation of chimneys is the most effective and simple, but it allows to reduce heat loss by more than half, as well as significantly reduce the fire hazard and the formation of condensate in smoke exhaust systems and protect them from destruction.

Thus, thermal insulation contributes to an increase in thermal efficiency and a safer use of the ovens. At the same time, it gives the building and the structure itself a more aesthetic look.

Having built a bathhouse, you need to take care of the safety of your loved ones. The main danger is live fire. If you do not perform high-quality insulation of the chimney, stove, ceiling and walls, the ceiling may catch fire. According to statistics from firefighters, in 2014 70% of fires in a bath occurred due to improper pipe insulation. We care about our readers and will tell you how to insulate a pipe in a bath with our own hands, what materials exist to protect wood structures from fire.

The pipe in the bath must be safe and contain heat well.

The chimney and stove heat up quickly. Traditionally, baths are made of wood and are easily ignited. For the insulation of walls, ceiling, chimney and stove, a layer of clay, asbestos and other available materials was used in the old days. The main thing is that the material is a poor conductor of heat and does not ignite from high temperatures. Protecting the chimney is necessary not only for fire safety purposes. Condensation will not form inside the insulated structure, the chimney will cool down more slowly and will serve the owners longer.

Insulation of the furnace and pipes with foil-clad isolon.

Some people think that it is enough to upholster the ceiling around the chimney with metal sheets, and the bath is completely isolated from the fire. The metal heats up in the same way, it will not save it from fire. As a heat insulator for a chimney, it is also not suitable.

You can overlay the pipe with red brick, but not every bath provides a similar design and size.

Modern manufacturers offer several options for the material for insulating the stove pipe in the bath:

  • foil insol.

Let us dwell briefly on each type.

Thermal insulation for chimney insulation

Thermal insulation is a relatively new material. You can do the insulation with the material yourself. Made of polyethylene foam, which is hidden between two sheets of foil.

Thermal insulation withstands high temperatures well and is suitable for insulating a bath pipe.

Manufacturers offer Teploizol with a thickness of 2 to 10 mm. The thicker the material, the higher the temperature it can withstand. For an easier presentation, consider the table:

The upper foil layer will protect the chimney from strong heat. Working with the material is simple. It is wrapped around the chimney, secured with a special metallized tape or wire.

Foilgoizol for chimney protection

Folgoizol consists of two layers: foil and heat insulator. The foil plays a reflective role and retains 90% of the heat in the bath. In terms of environmental friendliness, the material is in the first place of similar ones, since thick food foil is used for manufacturing. The material is not afraid of ultraviolet radiation and high temperatures from -65 to +175 ° C. It is a good insulator.

Folgoizol is coated with food foil, so it is harmless.

Often, not only the chimney, but also the walls and ceiling of the steam room are covered with foil insulation. It is an excellent insulation, steam and water insulator for a sauna or bath.

The sauna, lined with foil insulated inside, resembles a thermos in design. The heat does not come out, the bath heats up quickly and cools down for a long time.

Sandwich pipe - a godsend for a bath

Modern manufacturers suggest installing a safe sandwich pipe in a bath or sauna. Choosing a sandwich chimney, you don't have to worry about insulation. The chimney consists of several sections that can be easily inserted into each other. It will be easy to assemble the structure with your own hands. A sandwich pipe is suitable for a bath or sauna with an iron stove.

The sandwich pipe immediately has built-in insulation and insulation.

The sandwich tube design resembles a multi-layer cake. From the inside there is a layer of stainless steel, then insulation (basalt or mineral wool) is laid, outside is galvanized steel. The design is a modern method of built-in prefabricated chimney insulation. The design is intended to perform two functions at once: soot does not accumulate inside, and does not overheat outside.

But the iron stove to which the sandwich pipe is intended is mainly used in the sauna. What to do if you have a traditional Russian sauna with a brick stove, how to perform insulation? We'll talk about this below.

How to insulate a pipe in a traditional Russian bath?

For the construction of a pipe in a bath with a stone stove, red brick is used. He is not afraid of high temperatures, keeps warm for a long time.

The brick pipe structure must be correctly folded. The quality of the masonry will depend on how long the structure will last. Making a pipe for your bath is not worth saving, since repair work can be more expensive.

The pipe at the intersection with the roof, ceiling and other parts of the roof structure must be insulated with metal sheets.

The outlet of the pipe on the ceiling and through the roof must be insulated from high temperatures using asbestos sheets. And the walls at the inside of the pipe are upholstered with galvanized metal sheets. Plain iron sheets should not be used as they corrode. Around the pipe in places where it passes through the ceiling, you can make a box and fill it inside with expanded clay. It will additionally contain heat and protect wooden floors from fire.

Correctly insulating the pipe is only half the battle. It is also necessary to take care of the stove, ceiling and walls of the bath.

Protective insulation of the oven in the bath

Modern metal stoves are simply installed on the foundation, the walls are sheathed with metal sheets from the back and side. A stove made of metal with your own hands looks unsightly; it can be overlaid with red brick. It will be an additional insulator and will help keep warm in the bath.

Furnace insulation diagram in a bath.

Previously, the stove was insulated with asbestos sheets, but at high temperatures it emits harmful substances. Therefore, we do not recommend using asbestos in the steam room.

It is more environmentally friendly to insulate the stove with natural felt. The material is expensive, but it is a good insulator. The felt will not burn, and if a spark hits, it will smolder. The smell of smoldering is specific, it's hard not to notice it.

When installing the stove directly on a wooden floor, we recommend laying the felt first in two layers, then making a brick pillow in three rows. The walls and the floor around are insulated with metal sheets 50–70 cm high.

Correct insulation of the chimney or stove will extend the service life of the chimney and heat generator, as well as protect the wooden structure from fire. And after reading the article, there will be no questions about how to insulate a pipe in a bath.
