How to choose a chainsaw - detailed instructions. Electric chain saw, which one to choose for construction and summer cottages? Types of saws by area of use

A chain saw is an efficient tool for cutting wood, requiring less effort and less time than a hand saw. Unlike a chainsaw, it does not produce toxic exhaust. Therefore, they are used both in professional woodwork and in summer cottages. When choosing a saw, the main quality that is required of it is the ability to provide high performance over a long service life. The portal Mark.guru presents a rating of the best chain saws of the highest reliability for 2018.

In order to choose the right chain saw, it is recommended to evaluate the models according to the following criteria:

  • Power. A more powerful and productive tool can handle larger diameter trunks and withstand high loads.
  • Engine location... In most models, a transverse is implemented, which is convenient when working in a vertical plane. The saw is larger and more inconvenient in confined spaces. The longitudinal position achieves better balance and a smoother cut. In addition, better maneuverability is ensured.
  • Locking systems... Ensure the safety of the device. Activates the instantaneous stop of the circuit in the event of a rebound, as well as protection against accidental activation.
  • Preventing overheating... When unacceptably high temperatures are reached, the power supply is disconnected.
  • Soft start function... When the engine is started, the speed is gained gradually, which prolongs the life of the device.
  • Chain tension adjustment... Affects performance and safety. The tension can be changed by means of a screw and a screwdriver, or a nut and a slider are used. The second method is simpler and does not require additional tools.
  • Lubrication. A good saw should have a chain lubrication system, which is a special pump that provides uniform lubrication of the bar during operation.

Conclusion

When choosing an electric saw, it is necessary, first of all, to be guided by the purpose of use. For simple garden work, it is recommended to purchase more compact and lighter models. For example, rechargeable batteries that do not depend on the ability to access an electrical outlet. But they have a high price and are not suitable for large volumes of work. It is advisable to purchase a special extension cord for powerful productive electric saws. For tree pruning, it is better to choose from models with a vertical motor, since they are distinguished by good maneuverability. The transverse arrangement provides less power loss and high productivity.

The question of buying a chain saw sooner or later arises from any owner of a private farm, and usually this means an electric saw. Electric chain saws are inferior to gasoline-powered ones in performance and autonomy, but significantly benefit from ease of maintenance and use.

However, builders also often take an electric saw in addition to a gasoline saw - with small amounts of work, it is more convenient, and the working conditions sometimes do not allow using a power saw.

In stores today, the buyer is offered an extensive range of models of electric saws in a wide range of prices and characteristics. To get the right tool for your money, you need to understand how each of these characteristics affects the convenience, performance and safety of the saw.

Electric chain saw device

Despite the external variety, all electric chain saws are arranged in the same type. The housing (1) houses an electric motor (2) that rotates the drive sprocket (3). The sprocket drives the toothed saw chain (4) along the guide bar (5). On the rear handle (6) of the saw there is a power button (7), in front of the front handle (8) there is a protective shield (9), which is also an emergency brake. On the front of the body there is a row of thrust teeth (10) to facilitate sawing.

Fields of application of electric chain saws

The chain saw is used wherever there is a large amount of sawing work:

Preparation of firewood;

Carpentry;

Construction works;

Dismantling of wooden buildings and structures.

Some people use a chainsaw for delimbing, although a reciprocating saw is better for this task - it is both more convenient and safer.

Characteristics of chain saws

The more power saws, the higher its productivity and the faster it will cut the same bar. But this does not mean that you should choose a saw that is as powerful as possible. Power saws are heavier and significantly more expensive, so choose the saw for the future.

If you intend to saw thick logs (30 cm and more in diameter), then you need a saw with a long bar and a power of 2 kW or more.

If such tasks are not expected, the power of 1500 - 2000 W will be quite enough.

Saws with power less than 1500 W are only suitable for sawing small parts and delimbing.

Engine location can be longitudinal and transverse. With the transverse arrangement, the drive sprocket is located directly on the engine axis - the design is simpler, more reliable and cheaper. But with this arrangement, the engine protrudes strongly to the side, which can lead to certain inconveniences - such a saw is more difficult to operate in cramped conditions. In addition, due to the uneven distribution of weight, it can be pulled sideways during operation.

Saws with a longitudinal arrangement are devoid of these disadvantages, but they are more expensive.

Bus length determines the maximum cutting depth. The longer the bar is, the thicker the log or bar can be cut. Of course, if the length of the bus is supported by the appropriate power.

When buying a saw from a well-known manufacturer, you do not need to think about it - a company that values its reputation will not equip a low-power saw with a long tire. But if there are doubts about the correspondence between the length of the bus and the power, then you should be guided by the fact that the optimal power for a 40 cm bus is 2 kW, 35 cm is 1800 W. Saws with lower power are usually equipped with a 30 cm bar.

Bus groove width determines the thickness of the saw chain guides and characterizes the strength and durability of the chain. For household saws that are not designed for heavy loads, saw chains with thin guides are used.

Heavy-duty chains have thicker guide elements.

Chain step is called half the distance between any three rivets. The chain pitch determines the length of the chain teeth and affects the performance of the saw and the cleanliness of the cut.

The chain pitch must match the motor power: a large pitch provides more performance, but requires more power. In addition, the larger the teeth (the larger the pitch), the rougher the cut, the stronger the vibration of the tool, and the greater the adhesion of the chain to the material being cut - when wedging, such a chain will more likely cause the tool to slip out of hand.

Step into 1/4 "(6.3mm) provides maximum accuracy and cleanliness of the cut and is used only in miniature saws.

Step 3/8 "(9.3mm) provides acceptable performance and is used in most household saws.

Step 0.375 "(9.5 mm) It is used on powerful electric saws, from which maximum productivity is required.

Maximum chain speed affects the performance of the saw - the higher the speed, the faster it will cut. Of course, only if the engine power allows you to maintain a high speed under load - choosing among saws with different speeds and power, the choice should be made according to power. The high speed of a low-power saw under load will be greatly reduced and the advantage will be nullified.

Chain tensioning mechanism... The saw chain is stretched during operation so that at the same time it does not start flying off the bar, it must be tightened. On models with instrumental chain tensioning mechanism, this must be done using a separate tool, most often a screwdriver.

Toolless the mechanism allows you to manually tighten the chain by turning the tension adjuster on the body.

Powering the device. There are also cordless chain saws. They combine the simplicity, convenience and safety of using chain saws with the autonomy of gasoline-powered ones. Unfortunately, cordless saws are much more expensive, have less power and a short operating time from one battery (20-40 minutes). In addition, the cordless saw will be heavier at the same power.

When deciding to purchase a cordless saw, pay attention to the characteristics of the batteries: their voltage indirectly speaks about the saw power (the higher the voltage, the more powerful), and the capacity - about the duration of work without charging.

Also note that most cordless saws are sold without a battery or charger, which can be close to the price of the saw itself.

Electric chain saw safety

The chain saw is a dangerous tool. Careless handling can result in serious injury or even death. Therefore, it is extremely important to have all the options on the saw to ensure the operator's safety while working.

All electric saws are equipped with a chain brake lever that stops the chain when struck by hand. But the workmanship of this element may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Before buying, you should check the operation of the chain brake - the lever should snap off with little effort on it. Before starting work, be sure to check that the lever releases the chain immediately. The author of the guide personally observed a Chinese chainsaw, the release of the brake lever on which did not affect its performance in any way.

Lock against accidental activation allows you to lock the power button and ensures that the instrument will not turn on from accidentally pressing the button.

Inertial brake stops the chain when the tool is turned off. If the saw does not have this option, after turning off the tool, the chain continues to move by inertia for some time - this may be enough to cause injury.

Anti-vibration reduces vibration stress on hands and increases tool safety

Don't skimp on chain saw safety. Buying a cheap screwdriver of dubious quality, in the worst case, you will lose the money you paid for it. And in the case of a chainsaw, excessive savings can lead to loss of health or life.

Choice options

For pruning branches and cutting them for wood firewood, a light, low-power chain saw is suitable.

For confident work in medium trees and for most construction work, a medium saw with a 30-35 cm bar is the best choice.

For cutting thick logs, you need a powerful saw with a bar from 40 cm.

The choice of an electric saw is no exception. This tool, although inferior in power to its petrol counterpart, has a number of undeniable advantages. The electric saw is not suitable for large-scale work. But for the owners of summer cottages and private houses, this is an irreplaceable assistant. We will talk about the types of saws and how to choose an electric saw for a summer residence below.

Your summer cottage should be the main criterion when choosing a saw. Why? The point is that it is the range of tasks that will influence the choice.

Types of electric saws

The heart of our machine is the electric motor. It is installed in two positions: along and across. The former, due to their design features, lengthen the saw. The engine located across, firstly, makes the apparatus wider, and secondly, heavier. This is due to the introduction of the gearbox into the design.

Electric saws are divided into:

  • chain;
  • disk;
  • saber.

Chains are those whose working part is a chain with cutting elements. The edges of the chain are connected to form a ring. The cutting process takes place due to the rotation of the cutting element along the body along the guide (the so-called "tire").

Before choosing a chain for an electric saw, you need to pay attention to its profile. Low profile chains have lower productivity than tools with higher cut profiles. But vibration in this case is lower, which means high safety of work. A video about choosing a chain saw will help you pay attention to the most important points:

Replaceable discs are used as the cutting element of the circular saw. They can be of different diameters and are designed for different materials.

If cutting with discs involves working with metal and stone, it is better to choose a tool with a cutting depth of 100 to 130 mm. The disadvantage is that such a tool weighs 10 kg or more. Therefore, when choosing an electric saw, you need to look for a model with the possibility of stationary installation.

Reciprocating saws are also called electric hacks. They are very similar to a chain tool. The difference is the installation of flat cloths in such products. They make back and forth movements, due to which the cut occurs. The cutting speed can be up to 3 thousand movements per minute. This parameter will become one of the most important when choosing a reciprocating electric saw. The tool is quite effective because its cost is high:

Differences between gasoline and electric saws

  • Ease of operation. The electric saw is much easier to work with than the gasoline saw. This is due to the fact that the power of the device is lower and the speed is weaker;
  • mobility. Naturally, with the gasoline option, you will be able to move much more freely;
  • profitability. To use a chainsaw, we will have to buy not only oil, but also gasoline as a consumable. An electrical analogue is enough to be connected to a network or a battery;
  • the weight. This is where the electric saw wins. Because the power is less and there is no gasoline, our power tool is much more convenient to use and carry.

Disadvantages of an electric saw

  • limited range of operation due to the power cord. With the help of an extension cord, our working radius can be increased by several meters. But that doesn't compare to the ability to walk and use a saw wherever we want it. Although here, the manufacturers of electric saws can help us by installing a battery in the tool. This, of course, will increase our mobility, but also force us to monitor the charge, storage conditions and operation. Batteries do not like cold and discharge very quickly when used in low temperature ranges;
  • working hours. The total operating time of the saw cannot exceed several hours per day. Moreover, the time of continuous activity is no more than a few minutes. This is due to the rapid overheating of the working mechanisms;
  • strong dependence on the network. This is where we face our biggest problem. On the one hand, the saw can become a problem - plugs flying out, wiring burning. On the other hand, the network can cause damage to the power tool. This is due to the fact that either high or low voltage can be observed. Not to mention the power surge. All this leads to rapid wear of parts of the tool or, at all, to its unusability.

Advice ! When buying a powerful electric saw, make sure that the power grid of your home or summer cottage can withstand the power of the tool.

Chainsaw selection criteria

In this chapter, we will talk about how to choose a chain saw and what criteria you need to pay attention to:

  • the most important criterion is engine power. It is from this parameter that we will basically have to build on. This is due to the fact that the more powerful model consumes more energy. We all know that the power grid in rural areas, due to the unnecessary need for large loads, is done with the expectation of low energy consumption. As soon as you want to connect a powerful saw to such a network, you risk knocking out the plugs. This is at its best. At worst, you will simply burn all the wiring;
  • thermal relay. As mentioned earlier, the continuous operation of the saw is only a few minutes. This is due to overheating. To protect our instrument from overheating, we need a thermal relay. Therefore, before choosing an electric chain saw, take care of its availability;
  • price. It also depends on the power. The more expensive it is, the more powerful it is. Although, there is one point here. Electric saws with a motor that is located along the body are slightly more expensive than other locations. This is due to improved usability;
  • butter. Our future saw still has one tank. It is designed for lubricant. Basically, it is included in the work together with the start of the engine, and our task is to control the oil level in the tank. The type of grease to be poured is indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions;
  • chain tensioning system. The cost of the device also depends on it. The state of tension must be constantly monitored. A flying attachment can injure or damage the power tool itself and the worker. From here, there are several kinds of tensioning mechanisms. In the simplest, we will have to remove the protective casing and control the tension using a nut. Well, in more expensive models, this system is simplified and placed as a separate element on the external panel;
  • environmental friendliness. If you are a supporter of nature and the environment, then the electric chain saw is definitely your choice. This is primarily due to the fact that it does not use gasoline and has no gas emissions into the atmosphere. Hence its advantage, which should be considered when choosing an electric chain saw. With such a saw, you can work in a confined space without fear of getting poisoned by exhaust gases. Well, and as a nice bonus, it is several times quieter than its petrol counterpart.

Advice ! When choosing a chain saw over the Internet, be sure to read reviews from previous buyers.

Types of electric saws for wood

Depending on what kind of wood we have to work with, we can choose a power tool for ourselves.

The best assistant in the country when working with:

  • cutting off branches and twigs;
  • by sawing a tree;
  • a small preparation of firewood for the winter;

handle chain saw. For such types of work, we need a tool with a power of 1000 to 2000 watts. After reading reviews on how to choose a chain electric saw, you can understand in more detail the scope of its application.

For more accurate work (installation, for example), a saber electric saw is suitable for us. Its blade length varies from 10 to 35 cm and makes it very comfortable to work with wood and laminate. This tool will be needed where it will be necessary to make curly or simply not straight cuts of the material.

For the remaining tool (circular saw), we have the job of cutting chipboard sheets, pipes and metal sheets. There is a clarification here. For each material, we need a specific disc, and the circular saw itself is made in two versions: hand-held and stationary.

What brand of electric chain saw to choose

In this section, we will talk specifically about which chain saw to choose.

There are several types of electric saws: professional, for personal needs and the so-called cordless. The latter are suitable for landscaping and are not intended for processing medium to thick wood. The Makita BUC122RFE model is considered the best for such types of work. Light weight and two batteries allows you to comfortably carry out decorating work.

Knowing how to choose a manufacturer of electric chain saws, you can narrow down the range of products you need. The manufacturer must have been on the market for a long time, have positive feedback from customers and develop in the field of its activity.

For the needs of the house and the cottage, as we have already said, the power of which varies within 1000-2000 W, the Bosch AKE 35 model is perfect. Its power is 1600 W, and the tire is 0.35 m. There is a system of convenient chain tensioning, in which we do not have to disassemble half of the saw. Well, the weight (4 kg) will pleasantly surprise. It is, of course, heavier than a garden tool, but there is good power, which will be an excellent choice of an electric saw for a summer cottage.

The last type is professional chain saws. Here the leader is taken by the Makita UC4030A model. Its power is 2000 W, and the chain length is 0.4 m. This tool will allow you to comfortably deal with all wooden blanks not only at home, but also in the country.

How to care for your electric chain saw

If properly maintained, the tool does not require any effort during operation. To do this, we need to disassemble it every time after working with the saw. Remove foreign parts that have fallen into the device itself and become stuck in the chains. If the saw does not have an automatic lubricant supply for the cutting part, it is imperative to lubricate it after cleaning.

Since, ideally, we take such a tool for a summer residence, we store them in unheated rooms. After such a long storage, it is advisable to keep the saw in a warm room for about a day. This is to protect the power tool from condensation. A forum for giving on how to choose an electric saw does not always provide useful information on this topic. After all, each tool has its own storage specifics.

Pruning trees, preparing firewood and lumber for the construction of a building is far from a complete list of things that have to be done by those who live and work outside the modern metropolis. And if you are one of those who are used to doing everything with their own hands, without relying on the help of professionals, then sooner or later you will be faced with the question of buying a chainsaw.

In the domestic market, this tool is presented in a huge assortment. How to correctly choose a good chainsaw for a private house or summer cottage, given the significant differences in the technical characteristics and cost of the models? In this publication, we will consider what criteria should be guided when choosing, based on the purpose, frequency and ease of maintenance of this device.

Design and principle of operation

A chainsaw is a device that consists of the following mandatory elements:

  • a metal chain with saw teeth installed along its perimeter;
  • tires along which the chain moves during operation;
  • an internal combustion engine and the elements necessary for its functioning (transmission, clutch, carburetor, etc.);
  • fuel tank;
  • oil reservoir.

The main differences in the design of the chain and bar are the length of the working part, the shape and material of the saw tooth soldering.

Chainsaw design

The movement of the chain saw on the surface of the bar is provided by an engine that runs on a mixture of gasoline and oil. For the combustion of fuel in the engine cylinder, oxygen is needed, for the supply and creation of the necessary proportion of which the carburetor is responsible. The fuel tank is used to store the required supply of gasoline-oil mixture.

Important! The volume of the fuel tank is the determining factor in the duration of the chainsaw operation without refueling.

The principle of operation of the tool is extremely simple. The start is carried out by a manual starter. When the crankshaft is turned, a fuel-air mixture is created in the carburetor, which is fed into the engine slave cylinder. The mixture is ignited by a spark that is generated at the spark plug electrodes. The gas formed during the combustion of the fuel pushes the piston, which, in turn, transfers energy (through the connecting rod) to the crankshaft. Rotating, the crankshaft drives the drive sprocket, which moves the saw chain along the chainsaw tire.

Chainsaw operation

During movement, the cutting surface and tire are subjected to high loads. To increase their service life, these elements are subject to intensive lubrication, which is carried out by automatic oil supply to their working surfaces by means of a mechanical oil pump.

Classification

Based on the design features, purpose, functionality and the resource laid down by the manufacturer, the following classification of chainsaws has been adopted:

  1. Household.
  2. Semi-professional.
  3. Professional.
  4. One-handed.

The first are designed for the periodic execution of short and small-scale works that meet the needs of a resident of a country house. If you need to choose an inexpensive chainsaw for a summer cottage, which will ensure the performance of everyday tasks, be it harvesting, pruning or sawing small trees in your area, then pay attention to household models.

Semi-professional the tool is designed to perform the same work as household, with the only difference in the increased rates associated with the duration and volume of work performed.

Professional the gasoline tool can be used with ease, both for pruning branches in the garden, and for professional harvesting of "age-old" trees. The reverse "side of the coin" of such devices is the high price and weight and dimensions.

Important! It will be very difficult to cope with such a unit without professional skills. A characteristic feature of professional equipment is a high level of vibration and significant weight.

One-handed saws allow the owner to work with one hand. Structurally, one-handed saws practically do not differ from household, semi-professional or professional models, with the only difference - the location of the handle, which is installed not behind the device, but on top, directly above the center of gravity. One-handed saws have two undeniable advantages:

  • compactness;
  • ease of use.

The only drawback of such a tool is its relatively high cost.

Household chainsaw Semi-professional chainsaw
Professional chainsaw One-handed chainsaw

Prevents the consequences of "kickback".

Reduces vibration of the device, increasing the time of comfortable work with the tool.

Device power

Power affects the speed and depth of cut, the ability to cut "heavy" wood. If you do not plan to cut down "age-old pines", and the scope of the tool is limited to garden work, an installation with a capacity of about 2 kW, typical for household models, will be sufficient.

The power of professional devices often exceeds 7 kW, which significantly increases labor productivity. But, if you are not a professional lumberjack, then pay attention to semi-professional models. The power of these units varies from 2 to 3 kW.

Weight and dimensions

The weight of the model has a very noticeable effect on the usability.

The weight of representatives of the "household" and "semi-professional" class rarely exceeds 5 kg. Professional equipment is characterized by a spacious fuel tank and a powerful engine. These design features make the device heavy (over 6 kg) and, as a result, inconvenient to use.

Handle location

There are two options for the position of the handle: "back" and at the top of the device (one-handed). The first ones are most convenient for performing everyday tasks: harvesting firewood, preparing lumber for construction, etc. The main purpose of "one-handed" saws is to care for green spaces, pruning trees, shaping crowns, etc.

Due to its small mass and size, this type of saw has become popular not only in households, but also among tourists, fishermen, and hunters.

Saw head type

Along with the power, the type of saw headset is the main technical characteristic of any chainsaw. There are three types of saw sets:

  • Narrow - typical for most household devices. The advantage is the absence of the "kickback" effect, which significantly reduces the likelihood of injury when using the device.
  • Lightweight. Structurally, such tires consist of two plates, between which a high-strength polymer material is located. The advantage is the reduced weight of the headset, which allows you to apply less effort when working with the tool.
  • Headset with replaceable heads. This design is used in professional equipment that undergo long-term and high loads.

In addition to construction, tires vary in length. Before, how to choose good chainsaw for giving, it is important to understand that the length of the headset should be directly proportional to the power of the drive. Long tires (60 cm or more) are best for felling trees; short (35-45 cm) - for everyday tasks: harvesting firewood, trimming branches and twigs, harvesting lumber.

Chain pitch

The speed of working with wood is affected only by the power and type of headset, but also by the chain pitch. Modern chainsaws use chains with a pitch of 0.325, 3/8 and 0.404 inches.

  • Pitch 0.325 have low profile saw chains that are used in household tools. Distinctive features: low vibration and short-term use.
  • 3/8 '' or 0.404 '' pitch have semi-professional or professional units. They are characterized by increased "endurance" and good tolerance to prolonged loads.
Important! The good durability of the saw chain does not mean that it can be used for all types of wood. Chains with carbide tipped teeth are used for sawing hard wood.

Power point

All modern gasoline saws are equipped with a two-stroke, carburetor engine. Fuel is supplied from the fuel tank. The capacity of this tank varies depending on the model and purpose of the tool: from 0.2 to 1.8 liters.

The automatic supply of oil to the working surface of the saw headset is made from the oil reserve reservoir, the capacity of which can be from 0.1 to 0.5 liters.

Chainsaw with carburetor engine

Profitability

Fuel consumption depends on carburetor setting, device power and tool load. Household appliances are considered the most economical; professional - on the contrary, are characterized by an increased consumption of a gasoline-oil mixture. The documents for the device describe the nominal consumption of gasoline under certain operating conditions.

Tip: there is a little trick that allows you to estimate the fuel consumption of the unit at a glance. The thing is that manufacturers equip their devices with a fuel tank that allows an average of 40 minutes to function without refueling. Based on this rule, it is quite simple to estimate fuel consumption "by eye": the larger the tank, the higher the fuel consumption.

Security

The gasoline saw belongs to the devices, the work with which is associated with an increased risk of injury.

Modern tool manufacturers are trying to protect the user as much as possible by equipping their models with various types of protection. The most common is kickback protection. It is implemented in the form of a flap-lever, which stops the movement of the chain along the bus when the effect of "kickback" occurs.

What else should you pay attention to

If you are really puzzled by the question choosing an inexpensive brand of chainsaw, then you should pay attention:

  • to the location of the engine;
  • cutting speed;
  • vibration protection.

Power plant position

Structurally, the engine in such units can be located vertically or horizontally. With the vertical placement of the power plant, the manufacturer has the opportunity to equip the tool with a sufficiently serious muffler, which will significantly reduce the noise that inevitably appears during the operation of the device. This layout of the power plant is most often used in professional equipment.

The horizontal arrangement of the engine allows you to make a tool with the most compact weight and size characteristics. This design has become popular among the owners of summer cottages and country houses.

Cutting speed

Cutting speed directly depends on the speed of rotation of the chain, the design of the headset and the configuration of the saw tooth. In modern tools, almost all of the above indicators are identical with the only difference in the material from which the teeth of the saw chain are made. The steel grade will tell the experienced operator the frequency with which he will have to sharpen the chain after continuous tool operation.

Vibration protection

Anti-vibration protection is a pad of soft material located at the point where the handle is attached to the device body. In expensive units, instead of a gasket, a spring system is used, which effectively dampens vibration. As a rule, such protection is realized only in semi-professional and professional equipment. In household budget saws, anti-vibration protection is not expected.

As a conclusion

If you are wondering which chainsaws are good and inexpensive, then answer yourself a few simple questions:

  1. Why do you need this tool.
  2. How long do you plan to use it.
  3. How much are you willing to pay for the device.

Having answered these questions, you can conclude about the saw class, in which you should look for the model you need. Next, take our rating as a basis, which will allow you to choose the best chainsaw from thousands of models on our market.

Watch a video on how to choose a chainsaw

Currently, there are a lot of different tools on the market, which were previously considered quite expensive, but now they have quite affordable prices. And now we will talk about such a necessary, and sometimes just necessary thing in the household, like a chain saw.

In addition, the variety of models of this instrument in our stores is really large, and it can be difficult to understand it.

Difficulty and frequency of work: classification of saws

Modern chain saws, according to their capabilities, and, accordingly, the tasks to be solved, are divided into three main classes: household, farm and professional. Let's consider for what purposes each category is intended.

Household

This class is intended for harvesting firewood for personal use - for example, for a private house or summer cottage, sawing not very thick logs or trimming knots in a garden area. For such saws, the norm is considered to be 20 hours of work per month, or about 40 minutes a day. They have low power and low weight. If you need to use the tool from time to time - this category is for you.

Farming

The instrument of this class is also called semi-professional. You can do any work with such a saw - building a house, felling trees. It is even possible to do some professional tasks, such as cutting branches in logging.

These saws differ from professional ones in lower power, motor resource and tire size. They do not have access to indicators of continuous operation of a professional tool. The name of the class "farmer" characterizes this type very succinctly.

It is not intended for daily full-fledged work on felling huge pines in northern conditions, but it is quite suitable for everyday use on a farm where anything can happen.

Professional

Most powerful category. Its name suggests that an instrument of this class is intended for use in maximum modes. The service life of such saws is up to 2000 hours. For them, the normal mode of operation is 16 hours a day and 8 hours without interruption. The power of such saws is usually above 2000 W.

It makes no sense to buy such a tool for a home, not only because of the high price. It is believed that even with maximum household use, you use a tenth of its potential at most.

Did you know? Sometimes a separate "special" class is also distinguished (for work at height without stairs, with the help of a holder, for the work of rescuers, etc.).

Other criteria

Before choosing a saw, you should pay attention to certain criteria and study them carefully.

Electric or petrol engine

It is difficult to say unequivocally which is better - a chainsaw or its electric counterpart. First, you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type of engine.

Advantages:

  • autonomy (no cord);
  • high power;
  • longer tire;
  • the ability to work in all weather conditions.
Disadvantages:
  • great complexity in operation in comparison with electric saws;
  • the need to monitor the fuel mixture (do not forget to add oil to gasoline);
  • high price;
  • not suitable for indoor work (it's not only about the exhaust, but also about the noise, 100 dB versus 75 dB for the electric motor).
Video: chainsaw device

Important! When working with a chainsaw, do not use gasoline that has been stored for more than two months. After the specified period, polymers and resin begin to form in it (this is a natural process), due to which carbon deposits form in the cylinder.

Advantages:

  • convenience (started by pressing a button);
  • ease;
  • even and smooth cut, due to the absence of vibration;
  • the best option for indoor work;
  • ease of use;
  • low noise;
  • the price is much lower than that of chainsaws.
Disadvantages:
  • the presence of a cord (this does not apply to cordless saws);
  • dependence on electricity;
  • low power;
  • works continuously for no more than 20 minutes;
  • do not work in high humidity (especially in the rain).
Video: electric saw device We can say that for both types of engines there are tasks that better correspond to the characteristics of both one and the second. If the main thing for you is autonomy, you should make a choice in favor of a chainsaw. In the same case, if you need a tool for working indoors and there are no problems with electricity, an electric motor will be the best solution.

Weight and size

Saws of all classes are approximately the same in size. They have approximately the following dimensions: 450/270/300 mm.

The weight of utility-class saws ranges from 5 to 7.5 kg, and the length of the bar, respectively, from 40 to 50 cm. We can say that the optimal or average weight in this category is about 6 kg.

As for semi-professional saws, here the indicators are approximately the following: weight from 4 to 7.5 kg, the average value is around 5 kg. Bus length 50 cm.

Professional grade saws can weigh about 4 kg (without tire) and work well with tires up to 75 cm in length.

Did you know? In 1927, Emil Lerp developed and presented the Dolmar chainsaw. She weighed 58 kg.

Power selection

Power is perhaps the main indicator of the tool. It depends on him how quickly and deeply the saw can cut a tree, and whether it will be possible to do it at all for this particular task. Usually 1-2 horsepower is enough for a household tool.

For the professional category, there is a wide range of tool power - 2-6 kW. But here there is such an indicator as the ratio of weight and power. After all, it is one thing to cut down ordinary trees in a warm climate, and quite another thing - a frozen spruce in the polar regions of Russia. Accordingly, the power required is different.

Selection by headset

Saws of all three classes are structurally identical. To put it simply, this is an engine (an electric motor or an internal combustion engine with a clutch), and a replaceable headset, which includes a tire and a chain.

Type and length of tires

The tire is one of the main characteristics of the saw. Its choice is influenced by many factors in each specific case for a specific task.

There are narrow and flat tires. Distinctive feature of the narrow tire- tapered tip. This design helps to avoid kickback when the chain enters the cut. Such tires are used mainly on household tools. The wide tip is used in the professional class and in super difficult jobs.
Lightweight tire consists of a pair of steel sidewalls, the space between which is filled with high-strength polyamide. For a certain kind of work, this characteristic (light weight) can be a serious advantage.
- such a headset is installed on a high-power professional instrument. It is used for the most intense loads.

The length of the bus is also of great importance. The choice of length depends on the power rating of the engine. In the characteristics of any tool, the recommended bar length should be indicated. Smaller size (within a small range), you can use. The tolerance is usually indicated in the instructions.

Tire length is indicated in inches, and can be 10 "(25 cm), 12" (30 cm), 14 "(35 cm), 16" (40 cm), 18 "(45 cm).

Important! Such an element of protection as an additional shield is not provided on Swedish chainsaws.

Chain requirements

The chain pitch is the distance between adjacent links. Indicated in inches. There are 5 step sizes:

  • 0,25" (1/4");
  • 0,325";
  • 0,375" (3/8");
  • 0,404";
  • 0,75"(3/4").
In household tools, chains are mainly used with a pitch of 0.325 "(for saws with a capacity of up to 3 liters. From.) And 0.375" for four-power engines. "Caliber" 0.404 "is used in a professional tool that has a minimum of 5.5 HP power. The extreme lower and upper steps are almost never used.

There is an approximate purpose for each step. For example, for ordinary household sawing of a bar or non-thick logs, for cutting branches or sawing dry trees, 0.325 will be sufficient. "

Availability of additional protection

Often (especially for beginners), the cause of injury can be recoil, or inertial shock, which is formed at the moment when the chain crashes into a tree. Helps to avoid this phenomenon kickback damper, or inertial brake... When choosing a tool, you should pay attention to its availability.

Vibration is another risk factor. Strong vibration can damage joints. In inexpensive household saws, this problem is solved by using rubber gaskets. And in a professional tool - by moving the handle with the tank away from the engine, thus creating a counterweight. If you do not want joint problems in the future, pay attention to the presence vibration protection.

Locker, or throttle lock button- another useful function, the presence of which excludes accidental pressing on the gas. Considering the saw's ability to cause serious injury, this feature is useful.

Additional shield is designed to prevent hand contact with a hazardous mechanism during operation. Such protection is located at the end of the headset.

Uptime resource

As for such a concept as a resource of uninterrupted operation, there is still no single and clear classification of it. In addition, it (classification) is complicated by factors such as the regularity of use, in what conditions you have to work, etc.

That is, you can work with a professional tool on the verge of its capabilities, in super-harsh conditions, and the same tool in a gentle mode. After that, it is incorrect to speak of an equal “safety margin”.

It is believed that a professional tool has a service life of 1500-2000 hours. Even so, different manufacturers define this value differently. Some call the end of the resource the drop in compression in the engine to 0.6 from the initial one, others mean the first overhaul.

Did you know? The world leader in the production of chain saws, the German company Stihl, owes its name to the engineer Andreas Stihl, of German origin, who in 1926 patented his invention - a hand-held chain saw with an electric drive.

Price and quality

We will try to bring the most popular models of the most famous brands. It is believed that they all fully justify their prices, and the large variation in the price range of the professional class is explained by the aforementioned difference in power.

How to use the saw for the first time

A new tool, as well as a saw after a major overhaul, requires a running-in procedure before starting work. It is necessary to increase the service life of both the engine and the entire unit.

First you need to soak the chain in an oil bath. Do this as directed by the manufacturer. This is usually done in this way: take a clean container, put a canvas in it and fill it with oil, which is recommended in the instructions, for 4-6 hours.

Electric saw running in- it's not difficult. With the chain in place, turn on the saw and let it idle for a few minutes. Then tighten the chain - it must be slightly stretched. Work a little with not very thick material and check how tight the chain is. The saw is now ready for real work.

Important! After stopping the engine, wait for the chain to cool down. Only after the chain has cooled down should it be tightened.

How to adjust the tension of an electric saw chain - video

Chainsaw break-in takes more time and effort.

The first launch must be completed with the headset. Running the engine without load can cause premature engine wear. Before starting the engine, two important procedures must be done:

  • prepare a fuel mixture;
  • check the chain lubricant that enters the bus ducts.
Usually, for running in both new and remanufactured saws, it is necessary to burn 7-10 tanks of fuel before the tool can deliver its rated power (without risking damage). And the saw should work at this time at low speeds.

Two-stroke chainsaw motors do not have special units responsible for lubrication. Lubrication is carried out with the oil that is part of the fuel mixture. Therefore, it is extremely important to prepare a mixture of gasoline and two-stroke oil, in the ratio indicated by the tool manufacturer.

Gasoline is used with an octane rating of at least 90. It is very important to use high-quality fuel. If the fuel tank of your chainsaw has a green cap, it means that the engine of your saw is equipped with a catalyst and you need to take unleaded fuel for it. If there is no catalyst, leaded gasoline should be used.

To prepare the fuel mixture, you can use the oil recommended by the saw manufacturer, or a multipurpose two-stroke oil for chainsaws such as JASOFB or ISOEGB. In this case, the proportion of the mixture will be 1:33 (1 part of oil per 33 parts of A-92 gasoline and above). If you decide to opt for the oil recommended by the manufacturer, see the proportions of the mixture on the package (they usually range from 1:25 to 1:50).

The next thing to do is check the grease going into the tire bore. This is done as follows:

  • check if there is oil in the tank;
  • inspecting the bus channels;
  • check the lubrication of the bearing of the drive sprocket and the presence of lubrication of the driven sprocket.

Did you know? The famous Soviet chainsaw "Friendship" appeared in 1955. In 1958 she received a gold medal at the Brussels Exhibition. The original quality of the instrument was so high that some examples of the sixties are still in working order. This saw weighs 12 kg.

After you have made sure that everything is fine, you can proceed to the first launch. The following is the procedure for a cold start:

  1. Stretch the chain so that it turns freely.
  2. Place the saw on a hard, stable surface so that the chain and bar do not touch anything.
  3. Set the chain brake to the inoperative position.
  4. Switch on the ignition.
  5. Close the air supply.
  6. If your instrument has a decompression valve, press it down to make starting easier.
  7. We put the throttle damper on start. If your chainsaw has split control, pull the choke lever out of the body. If you have a dual control tool, lock the throttle lever in the intermediate position by pushing down on it.
  8. With a non-working (usually left) hand, take the saw by the front handle and press it down, directing it down.
  9. We step with the right foot on the protective shield of the handle.
  10. With the other hand, we pull the starter handle towards ourselves, until we feel resistance, after which a sharp jerk should be made.
  11. We open the air damper and re-start the saw.
  12. After starting the engine, add gas to the maximum and lower the throttle, the start blocker will then turn off.

Now let the saw idle for 5 minutes. Check the tension, if necessary (usually it arises) - tighten the chain.

Without loading the tire, try cutting thin twigs and branches. The recommended mode is as follows:

  • 60-90 p. - work in the minimum mode;
  • 10-20 s. - at idle speed.

Then stop the saw and check the tension. Repeat the tensioning procedure if necessary.

Important! The thickness of the tree when using a chainsaw does not play any role in the load on the saw and headset. The load is created only by a working person, by the pressure that he puts on the tool. It is especially important to remember this when running in.

At the end of the running-in, the carburetor should be adjusted, it is advisable to do this at the manufacturer's service.

After working out 6-7 tanks, you get a chainsaw with the characteristics that are included in it by the manufacturer.

Well, now you know almost everything you need to get started with a chain saw. The rest of the subtleties and tricks for more effective work will come with experience. You just need to remember: both a chainsaw and an electric saw are quite dangerous tools, if you do not follow safety precautions, you can get serious injuries. These simple rules should not be neglected.

Which saw to choose: reviews

an electric saw is cheaper and much more economical, but still, if you choose, it’s better to spend a little more and buy a chainsaw, just not made in China, since it will not last you even a couple of months. After all, no matter how you twist the electric saw, it is rather limited in its application, because you can hardly use it to cut a branch on a tall tree, since there is simply not enough cable. Or, for example, you need to go to the forest to chop firewood, but you will not use it as electricity in this case. So, whatever you say, but it is better of course a chainsaw, and if you have already decided to take it, then take it.
