Plaster wall decoration is an interesting solution. DIY decorative plaster of walls

Wall decoration with decorative plaster is work that is carried out on internal or external surfaces. They aim to give walls or ceilings a specific texture and color. Depending on the composition chosen, different techniques for applying this material are used. Only preparatory work remains unchanged.

To decorate the walls with plaster with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • spatulas of different sizes;
  • graters and half graters;
  • trowel;
  • capacity;
  • brushes, rollers and sponges;
  • drill with mixer attachment;
  • stepladder or scaffolding;
  • plastic wrap, masking tape;
  • plaster mix, wax, paint.

For the preparatory stage, the following tools and materials are needed:

  • sandpaper, sander;
  • rule;
  • level and plumb line;
  • spatulas;
  • reinforcing mesh;
  • deep penetration primer;
  • starting plaster, putty.

Preparatory stage

Plastering requires a perfectly prepared surface. To do this, you need to carry out the following manipulations:

  1. Completely remove the old coating or clean it from traces of paint, wallpaper, and so on.
  2. Level the walls with starter plaster and reinforcing mesh or drywall sheets.
  3. Seal possible surface defects such as gouges and cracks with putty.
  4. Remove protruding fragments.
  5. Check the evenness of the walls with a level or plumb line.
  6. Apply two coats of primer to increase adhesion.

Structural plaster wall decoration

With the help of this material, finishing work is carried out on external and internal surfaces. Decorating with decorative plaster with your own hands does not require rich experience or qualifications - a home craftsman can easily cope with it. Difficulties can arise only with the application of the mixture to the ceiling.

Preparation of the solution

The modern construction market offers ready-made mixtures in plastic containers of various sizes or dry powders in bags that must be diluted with water. If we are talking about saving a budget, then it is better to buy a powdery material and prepare decorative plaster yourself. For this purpose, you will need an electric drill with a mixer attachment, water and a mixing container.

Important! Most structural plasters dry very quickly, and water cannot be added to them after preparation, therefore it is not recommended to make large batches in order not to lose material.

Material consumption directly depends on the filler fraction:

  • Coarse material - 2 kg per square meter.
  • Medium-grained - 1.7 kg.
  • Fine-grained - 0.7 kg.

The first step is to wash the dilution container and pour into it the amount of water indicated by the manufacturer on the package. The liquid temperature should be approximately 20 degrees. Then the solution should be gradually added to the water, stirring it with a mixer.

After that, you need to wait about 15 minutes and stir the plaster again. If the material is made on the basis of acrylic resins, then color is added to it, otherwise it is subject to subsequent painting.

Application features

The prepared composition is taken on a spatula and applied to the wall, after which the plaster is stretched over the surface. Excess material is also removed with a spatula. During application, it is important to observe the thickness of the plaster layer, which should correspond to the fraction of the material, therefore it is not recommended to make it more than 3 mm. At the same time, too thin a layer will not be able to completely cover the walls, and after drying, a primer will appear on them.

As mentioned above, this material dries instantly, so a limited time is allotted for work. In order for the plaster layer to be uniform, it should be applied at one time. If the surface to be treated is too large, then you will have to divide it into sections with masking tape. Then apply the plaster with an overlap, remove the tape until the material has hardened, and treat the rest of the area in the same way.

The applied layer of plaster should not be thicker than the grain of the filler included in the composition

Grinding plaster

This stage is considered the most important. The appearance of the resulting surface and its performance depend on its correct implementation. Work should be started immediately after the material has set. This usually takes 30 minutes. It is easy to check the readiness of the wall: just put your palm against it, if it does not stick, you can start.

The procedure is carried out with a plastic trowel. To achieve different effects, different rubbing techniques are used (see photo):

You should know! If for some reason it is not possible to process the entire wall in one go, then you do not need to grind exactly to the boundaries of the treated area. It is necessary to leave the plaster at the edges intact, and after applying the entire layer, carefully wipe the joints.

Dyeing

A day after the main work, you can start painting the wall. The first step is to sand the entire surface with sandpaper in order to smooth out minor defects. Then the wall is painted a dark color and waited for it to dry. The next layer of paint should be lighter by 1-2 tones. Work is carried out with an ordinary paint roller, and the joints of the wall with the floor and ceiling are treated with a brush. After the second coat has dried, it is recommended to apply a glossy varnish.

Wall decoration with textured plaster

First, a solution is prepared taking into account the manufacturer's recommendations, after which it is applied to the surface with spatulas. dries longer than structural, so you can safely process the entire wall. Excess material is also removed with a spatula. After processing the entire area of the wall, you can start creating the texture.

How to make a textured layer

Such coverage can be obtained using the following tools:

  • roller;
  • stencil stamp;
  • trowel and spatula.

Using a roller is the easiest and fastest way. With this tool, you can create a velor-like surface. To do this, you need to forcefully pass them along the entire surface of the wall, while the movements should be directed in one direction. Then wait until the material dries and remove the protruding fragments with a spatula blade.

If it seems too complicated a process, then you can purchase special stencils-stamps with embossed patterns in hardware stores. These products are simply pressed against fresh plaster, after which a relief remains on it. The main inconvenience is the need to constantly rinse the stencil with water in order to remove material residues from its surface.

On a note! When buying everything you need, you need to purchase several small stencils for the corners.

Using spatulas and trowels, they create patterns that resemble the texture of natural stone, suede or concrete. You need to work with them according to the same principle as with all of the above tools. A brush, spatula or trowel is pressed against the surface and carried over its entire area. If you don't have a construction tool at hand, you can use a regular sponge or even a plastic bag. In general, anything that can leave a relief on the surface will do.

How to stain

Such decorative plaster for interior work does not require mandatory staining, but to emphasize the texture, it is still better to carry it out. First, the surface is cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper, then the resulting dust is brushed off. The first layer of paint is applied with a long-haired roller, and the second with a short-haired one. The tones of the paint should be slightly different. They need to be applied at intervals of a day, while the plaster after giving the texture should dry for about 48 hours.

If there is no roller at hand, then the process of staining decor plaster is as follows:

  1. Open a can of paint and pour it into a special container. A brush is completely dipped into it, along the entire length of the bristle. Then squeeze against the embossed edge of the container to remove excess paint. If there is no special container, you can squeeze the bristles of the brush against a piece of multilayer cardboard.
  2. Now you can start applying paint. It is not necessary to paint over every detail; you should apply the layer with sweeping movements, barely touching the surface. Thus, the paint will not rub into the texture, but only touch the protruding fragments.
  3. Wait until the first layer dries and apply a second, lighter one. In this case, the same technique is used as for the first layer.
  4. The last step is to apply the varnish. This material is first diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio, after which it is applied with a wide, clean brush. After some time (each varnish dries for a certain period), you can apply a second layer. After about 1-2 days, you can touch the plastered wall.

Some craftsmen use the blur method. It involves the application of only one layer of paint, which is subsequently rubbed with a damp cloth. As a result, the texture remains saturated in color, and the protruding parts are lighter.

Drawings and panels

Before working with decorative plaster, you need to immediately decide on the presence of additional design elements on the walls, for example, various drawings or panels. They are able to decorate and refine even the most ordinary interior, especially if they are combined with the right lighting.

What drawings can be applied and where to place them

A safe option is a separate wall, which is pre-finished with stone or stucco around the perimeter. It is also appropriate to place these elements between windows, near interior doors or along the edges of an arched passage.

If we are talking about a children's room, then here you can fantasize as much as you like. Drawings can be drawn to the theme of the child's favorite fairy tale or cartoon. For a children's room, it is permissible to apply drawings over the area of all walls.

As for the bedrooms or living rooms, everything is much more complicated here. The first rule is that the drawing should not introduce disharmony into the interior. Drawings on the walls are permissible only for classical design, baroque, empire style, etc. It goes without saying that in modern or high-tech, drawings and panels will look superfluous.

A bas-relief on the wall is an excellent solution for creating a stylish and unique interior.

The tone of the painted panel should either contrast with the tone of the adjacent wall, or differ from it by 2 tones. The combination of variegated and dark colors is unacceptable.

Application techniques

There are three main methods of surface decoration that require artistic taste. Therefore, it is better to trust professionals or get a master class on decorative plasters.

Working with a stencil

This option is the easiest to create. As a stencil, you can use fragments of plywood or drywall, having previously cut patterns on them.

The application process is as follows:

Creating a bas-relief using construction tools

The embossing method is also considered one of the most popular. It involves the use of plastic fine-grained plasters based on synthetic binders, acrylic paints and colorless varnish. To carry out such operations, you will also need brushes of different shapes and sizes, spatulas made of various materials, sharpened wooden pegs.

The process is as follows:

  • After applying the finishing layer of plaster, the master, using the selected tool, applies a relief pattern to the surface. The simplest example is waves painted with a paint brush.
  • The composition is completed with a decorated embossed frame, which is created using a sponge or foam roller.
  • After the drawing is completely dry, it is painted. There are also no clear recommendations here - it all depends on imagination and talent.

Hand sculpting

The latter method is considered the most difficult and without a specialized education, sculpture, most likely, will not work. The purpose of this operation is to create a relief on the wall being treated by means of hand sculpting. Such panels can occupy only part of the wall, or even the entire area. After they dry, the surfaces are also treated with paint and varnish.

Do-it-yourself decorative plaster is applied quite simply, if you do not take into account the artistic aspects of the issue. The main thing is to adhere to the above tips and recommendations of the manufacturers.

Decorative plastering has been and remains a popular type of decoration both indoors and on facade walls due to its practicality and the variety of surfaces created. In this article, we will consider all the popular methods and techniques for applying decorative plaster, the features of which will be clearly shown in video tutorials.

Materials and tools

Trowel application technology includes the following work methods:

  • A portion of the mortar is applied to the instrument and spread over the wall in short strokes. Laying layers of plaster overlap each other. Their direction can be either in one direction or in different directions. If the trowel moves not in a straight line, but in an arc, the relief will be completely different, more bizarre.

  • Another popular option is to put a decorative trim - trimming with a trowel... The plaster solution is also taken on a trowel, then it is easily pressed against the wall with its entire surface and removed. Movements are made quickly "to touch", turning the tool in different directions. It turns out the effect small "fur coat"... You can also first apply the plaster in an even layer of 2-3 mm, and then make facing over the entire area. It turns out as in the photo.

Roller

For decorating walls during repairs, use ordinary fur (paint rollers) and special rubber with a specific pattern. You can also make a structural roller for decorative plaster with your own hands by wrapping its rotating part, for example, with a rag, bag or rope.

The patterning technique with a structured roller is very simple:

  • the wall is plastered in one layer with a thickness of 2-4 mm;
  • a roller is carried over the plaster in one direction, leaving a pattern.

To give the walls a "fur coat" effect, use a fur roller... There are two ways to do it:

  • the roller is dipped into the plaster solution and rolled along the wall;
  • a section of the wall is completely plastered with a trowel or spatula, then a texture is formed with a roller.

After the mortar has set on the wall, you can walk with a wet trowel and smooth out the protrusions, rub.

Important: If the mixture is uneven, remove the excess with a spatula. It is not recommended to take long breaks when working with a roller, as the material will dry out and joints will be noticeable on it.

Brush

With the help of a brush, a finishing coating is created, as a rule, using ready-made plasters for decoration. This method has several advantages:

  • Profitability. The brush spreads the material in a thin layer.
  • Rapidity. When the mixture is applied to the wall, the texture is immediately created.
  • Simplicity. No special skills and techniques are required, decorative plaster is simply applied and spread with strokes in different directions.

Often such mixtures contain mineral fillers, for example, sand, marble chips. They roughen the plaster and complement the texture created by the brush. More information about the application technique will be described in the video tutorial below.

Sponge

For the device of textured coating, improvised means are also used, for example, foam or sea sponges, plastic bags, rags.

First, lay an even base layer, use a trowel. Then scoop up a small amount of plaster with a sponge and apply it to the wall with strokes. You can not cover the entire surface, but only make islands of plaster. After it begins to set (after 15-20 minutes), the tops are smoothed with a trowel or spatula.

In this way, they imitate the texture of the stone, create arbitrary patterns.

Often, decorative is used for wall decoration in an apartment or a private house. Photo in the interior allows you to appreciate the versatility and attractiveness of the formed coating. This is relevant for all premises. In this article, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the available types of plaster and its distinctive features, as well as solutions implemented in various interiors.

When choosing a mixture for the preparation of decorative plaster, it is imperative to consider where it will be applied and in what conditions it will be used. Manufacturers offer solutions:

  • The special composition provides sufficient strength of the formed coating. It is not afraid of significant temperature fluctuations, remaining unchanged under the influence of precipitation and in conditions of high humidity;
  • for interior work. Their distinctive feature is environmental friendliness. Such a composition is not capable of harming human health. However, due to the lack of resistance to temperature fluctuations, they cannot be used to decorate facades;

The disadvantages of decorative plaster include its high cost. It will be expensive not only the material itself, but the work on its application. Those who can do their own wall decoration have good savings opportunities. The complexity of dismantling the formed coating is another drawback. You will have to spend a lot of time to remove the annoying layer of decorative plaster from the walls.

Structural

The composition of such decorative plaster includes particles of various sizes, which make it possible to form a certain structure. This should include "Plaster-bark beetle" and "Plaster-fur coat". Belonging to the same type, such compositions differ in the method of application and the final result.

"Bark beetle" is relevant for the design of building facades. Inside the house, such decorative plaster is used quite rarely and mainly for the design of non-residential premises. Due to its special composition, "Bark beetle" quite well imitates the structure of a tree eaten away by bark beetles. The presence of mineral chips in the composition of the mixture allows you to form an interesting relief, having a different direction depending on the movement of the spatula: vertical, horizontal, at an angle or chaotic.

Textured

The carefully selected composition of the components allows the development of mixtures that can be used to create a coating that simulates various surfaces: leather, brick, stone or velvet. With their help, you can create a unique relief, for example, a three-dimensional panel.

White decorative plaster will be appropriate for a room decorated in a Scandinavian or American style. It is often used as a basis for painting.

Various tools can be used to form the desired pattern. In some cases, in addition to standard rollers and stamps, I use natural materials. Branches, leaves or feathers, pressed into the semi-solidified mass, make it possible to give the surface uniqueness and originality. As a result, three-dimensional patterns appear on the surface, for example, floristic motives.

Among modern production technologies, the most popular is the Graphite system, which is a thin-layer printed concrete. When used, it is possible to form on the walls an exact imitation of masonry, fabric, wood or leather.

How to properly apply decorative plaster with your own hands

The order in which the work is performed depends on the desired result. You can form decorative plaster as follows.

In recent years, decorative plaster has been actively used to decorate walls in houses and apartments. It allows you to artistically veneer various surfaces, and it is not at all necessary to buy ready-made compositions, you can make a decorative finish of this type with your own hands. In this article, we will talk about how to create it yourself.

Types and features of decorative plaster

Decorative wall plastering has become a popular cladding tool due to its many benefits. thick layer (at least 10 mm) and creates a bright, attractive surface that can mimic the visual characteristics of natural finishing materials - wood and stone. Thanks to this, plaster can be used to decorate rooms in different design styles, including modern, classic and provincial directions.

There are several types of decorative plaster for walls:

  1. 1. Structural. Such a cladding has in its composition inclusions of various additional materials - sand, quartz chips and others.
  2. 2. Textured. Allows you to create embossed surfaces.
  3. 3. Venetian. Imitates the surface of natural marble.

Regardless of the type, decorative plaster always contains a number of main components:

  • an adhesive that ensures high-quality adhesion of the cladding to the walls to be treated;
  • decorative inclusions - marble and quartz chips, sand, cellulose, beads and other elements that provide a high attractiveness of the faced surfaces;
  • auxiliary substances - plasticizer and others;
  • water.

Decorative plaster options

The most important advantages of decorative (structural and textured) plaster, which ensure its high popularity in the market, are:

  1. 1. Resistance to a wide range of adverse external influences, including ultraviolet radiation, temperature drops and mechanical damage.
  2. 2. Creation of a smooth, seamless veneer surface.
  3. 3. Simple installation that can be carried out without preliminary preparation of the walls.
  4. 4. Alignment of minor wall defects.
  5. 5. Environmental friendliness - the cladding does not contain hazardous chemicals, it is safe and hypoallergenic.
  6. 6. Creation of a "breathable" surface that does not accumulate odors and does not contribute to the growth and spread of mold.
  7. 7. A wide range of colors and textures.

However, this cladding also has disadvantages. The most important of them is the relatively high price, the need to use special tools in the work and the involvement of experienced designers to create complex surfaces. Fortunately, today it is not necessary to buy decorative plaster, you can make it yourself from ordinary putty. Craftsmen have come up with many options for artistic cladding. In particular, using ordinary plaster, you can do:

  1. 1.stencil plastering;
  2. 2. Venetian;
  3. 3. newspaper;
  4. 4. Versailles.

Plastering with stencils - we take cardboard and plywood

Stencil plastering is one of the easiest ways to create a textured artistic layer without the use of special facing materials. This method requires the use of a variety of tools and consumables. For repair you will need:

  • stencils for decorative plaster;
  • finishing acrylic putty;
  • color;
  • starting putty;
  • primer;
  • acrylic paint.

The hardest part is making the stencil correctly. The easiest way to do it is with a thin sheet of plywood or cardboard. First, paint a suitable design on a sheet of plywood or cardboard, such as a flower, leaf, bunch of grapes, or a graphic ornament. It is not at all necessary to draw all this yourself, you can simply print a picture from a computer and transfer it to plywood. Next, cut out this drawing in the future stencil. You can cut out of cardboard with a simple stationery knife, and for working with a plywood sheet, it is better to use an electric jigsaw.

When the stencils for creating textured plaster are ready, you can proceed to the facing work. To do this, add a color to the finishing putty, which will give the finish the required color, and mix the composition thoroughly so that the color dissolves evenly in the putty. Apply the putty on the entire surface of the wall in an even layer and wait until it is completely dry, then level the wall with a spatula and cover with a primer.

It is necessary to apply two coats of primer with a paint roller or a regular brush. Layers are applied alternately after the previous one has dried.

When the primer is dry, attach the stencil to the wall and fill the drawing with unpainted putty, which will form the pattern on the surface. You can remove the stencil only after the drawing has cooled down, otherwise it will be deformed and the wall will lose its attractiveness. After the pattern is completely dry, the sharp edges of the patterns can be sanded with fine sandpaper to make the wall look attractive and natural. At the end of the work, it remains only to paint the drawing with the prepared paint.

Venetian version - marbled pattern

Standard putty gives you the broadest possibilities for interior decoration of rooms. With its help, you can not only create smooth surfaces, but also make an imitation. For repairs you will need the following materials and tools:

  • finishing putty;
  • color;
  • wax;
  • primer.

Apply decorative Venetian-style plaster to the walls in stages. First prime all surfaces to be tiled. If the original color of the walls is very different from the chosen color of the putty, we recommend using a primer paint. Now add color to the prepared putty and apply it evenly to all walls with a spatula.

After waiting for the base layer of the cladding to harden, clean the wall with a spatula so that it is as even and without defects as possible, cover the surface with a transparent primer. This is followed by the most difficult stage of work, during which you need to cover the wall with putties of different shades of marble. First you need to prepare the finishing putty - divide the mixture into two halves and add color in a different volume to each of them. As a result, one part will be brighter than the other. After that, apply with random strokes a putty of different colors on the prepared wall and smooth it out. To give the wall gloss and gloss, after the finishing layer of the cladding has dried, the surface must be covered with wax or varnish.

Making a marbled plaster with your own hands is quite difficult, especially if you have no experience. To increase the likelihood of success, we recommend starting the cladding from the wall to be covered with furniture. By the time you get to the open walls, you will get an idea of how to correctly proceed to make the putty look as close to the marble pattern as possible.

Textured work with newspapers - learning along the way

Plastering with newspapers is much less complex than creating Venetian plaster. For this method of cladding, newspapers, acrylic paint and putty will be required, and experts recommend using starting finishing compounds, since they allow you to get a deeper texture than finishing ones. To begin with, make a tool from the newspaper that can be used to give a textured structure to the putty surface. To do this, you need to crumple the newspaper in such a way that it turns out to be a handle with a ball at the end. Put a plastic bag over the balloon to prevent moisture from getting on the paper and softening the newspaper.

Now apply the plaster on the wall with a layer of up to 10 mm. Without waiting for the material to dry, apply newspaper to the surface, creating a textured decorative coating. We recommend starting from the most difficult to notice places on the wall, move to open surfaces as you understand what structure the newspaper can give, and how best to proceed for this. Decorative wall decoration is a multi-stage process, in it with your own hands you will have to not only create a textured surface, but also priming the walls, and after the primer dries, paint the putty with acrylic paint. If you find too rough edges on the wall, you can rub them with fine-grained sandpaper after the paint has set.

The creation of curly surfaces can be carried out not only with the help of a newspaper, but also with other tools. A textured spatula, bevel or sponge is suitable for work.

Versailles plastering is a multi-stage process

Decorating the walls with decorative plaster for travertine is a rather complicated way of cladding, however, it can be used to make the walls in the house very attractive and save money on ready-made cladding compositions. To carry out such repairs, you will need a plaster-based starting and finishing putty, acrylic paint, silver and quartz-primer - a primer with mineral fillers (it must first be treated with the surface).

To make a decorative Versailles with your own hands, mix the finishing and starting putties in a 1 to 1 ratio, mix and add water to them in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. To avoid the appearance of small lumps in the putty, you need to leave it for 5-7 minutes, and then mix it again with a mixer. Place the prepared mortar on the wall in a thin layer (about 3 mm) using a trowel or trowel. To apply the pattern, use a plastic trowel, the pattern should be chaotic wavy stripes, which will make the wall attractive and original. When the putty is dry, scrape it off with a trowel and sandpaper it over with fine-grained sandpaper so that the finish is textured but smooth enough.

Then thoroughly clean the entire surface from dust and cover it with a primer, when the primer dries, paint the wall with paint. The best for Versailles plastering are paints of warm, neutral shades - any tone of beige. At the end, you need to mix the silver coat with a primer or varnish in a 1 to 1 ratio and apply the resulting solution over the paint with a paint roller. Lightly slide the roller along the wall so that only the top of the textured coating is painted with silver. Next, just wax or varnish the resulting veneer so that it is glossy.

Can you make a bark beetle yourself?

The bark beetle is a common type of decorative plaster that is usually used to decorate the facades of private houses. To save money, you can give your walls an equally appealing visual appearance by using a more affordable putty instead of expensive decorative plaster. In addition to cement putty for outdoor use, you will need marble chips (quartz chips, sand or other filler), a quality primer and water-based paint. Mix dry putty with filler in a ratio of 4: 1 - 4 parts dry mix to 1 part crumbs or sand. Mix the resulting mixture thoroughly and dilute with water to obtain a solution similar in consistency to thick sour cream.

If you do not pre-mix the mixture, then marble chips or other filler may be unevenly distributed inside the putty, which will negatively affect the quality of the cladding as a whole. Apply the resulting solution with a thin layer on the surface to be coated, and when the composition begins to dry (after 5-8 minutes), carefully rub the surface with a small one, making quick reciprocating movements. The resulting structure of the putty, which will be almost indistinguishable from the bark beetle plaster, will only need to be primed and painted.

How to create a composition from scratch using glue and soap?

If you are not satisfied with the ways of creating a textured surface using putty, you can make decorative plaster with your own hands using glue. To do this, you will need:

  • 800 g PVA glue;
  • 2 kg of 5% CMC solution used for wallpapering;
  • 10% laundry soap solution;
  • 6.5 kg of gypsum or chalk powder.

First you need to make wallpaper glue from the CMC solution, pouring it with water. See the package for the required amount of water for the glue. Now prepare a soap solution by finely grating and soaking in water. When all the components are ready, combine them and mix thoroughly with a construction mixer or drill (with a special nozzle). As a result, you should get a pasty mixture that is applied to the walls exactly like a standard commercial putty. Making decorative plaster is very simple, but it has one very significant drawback - a long curing time. Although it is this time that can be used to create textured surfaces.

In addition to creating the putty yourself, you can make and apply decorative plaster with various additional components. The first mixture is created from the following components:

  1. 1. River sand (washed and sieved). You can use quarry sand, but before work it must be soaked in water to wash out clay impurities.
  2. 2. Satengips. It is a ready-made dry mix on a gypsum basis containing various mineral additives.
  3. 3. Fugenfüller. A ready-made gypsum-based mixture containing polymer additives, it will give homemade plaster moisture resistance, strength and durability.

These ingredients must be dry mixed in a ratio of 3: 3: 1, then fill them with water and mix thoroughly. Add water until the mortar acquires a thick consistency of good plaster.

Another textured mixture is made from soil and satengypsum. It is best to use a deep penetration primer so that the resulting composition has good adhesion, moisture resistance and strength. For work, you can use any primer, the main thing is that after application it does not create an impenetrable film. To make a textured veneer, it is necessary to dilute the soil with water in a ratio of 2 to 1. Then gradually add satengips to the solution and mix constantly until you get a thick, pasty plaster. Before use, such a solution should be allowed to brew for at least a few minutes, then stir again so that as much air as possible comes out of it. Plaster is laid with a spatula, after which it can be covered with paint.

To make a decorative finish, you can use any ready-made gypsum mixture with additives. You can get it at almost every specialty store. To create textured surfaces, it is necessary to seal the composition with water and add PVA to it. The result should be a thick solution that can be easily applied with a spatula and used for any of the figured plastering methods described above.

It is necessary to create and apply any decorative plaster with your own hands, taking into account the individual characteristics of the rooms to be faced. For wall cladding in "wet" areas of the house, textured materials are made of tile glue. To do this, dilute the glue in accordance with the instructions on the package and apply it in a thin layer to the surface to be treated. After that, using templates, stencils or any other materials at hand, draw textured drawings on the basis. The easiest way is to make a texture that mimics the visual qualities of natural stone or brickwork. After creating the texture, you need to smooth the drawing with sandpaper and paint.

Given the variety of existing methods of creating textured plaster, it is possible to create artistic, aesthetic surfaces at home without much difficulty and large financial costs. Choose a method, taking into account your capabilities and preferences, so that the interior and exterior of the home will delight you and your loved ones.

Decorative plaster looks not only very attractive, but also significantly expands the possibilities of masters in interior design. The cost of a ready-made building mixture for decorative wall decoration is quite high, which significantly limits the possibilities of its use. In some cases, experts reveal their secrets of craftsmanship and show with examples that the decorative plaster made with their own hands is in no way inferior to ready-made solutions.
It is to such a master that I would like to make a separate gratitude for the clear and accessible video instructions that allow you to implement various ideas for decorating premises. The review includes the cumulative experience of the masters, which is collected in a separate publication. The recipe and tips will help you endlessly experiment with decoration in any room, where each wall can take on a unique appearance.

Decorative plaster in different techniques

Versailles plaster from conventional mixes

How to make do-it-yourself decorative plaster like walls in a Versailles apartment? It turns out that a similar texture can be achieved using ordinary dry starting gypsum plaster and finishing putty, which, when mixed and applied, give an attractive texture with light inclusions of the middle fraction. This finish requires the use of acrylic lacquer, metallic paint and glitter. A detailed master class from the studio "REDecoration" is given in the video at the end of the publication.

The sequence of work on the application of Versailles plaster:

  • glue the perimeter of the future coating with plaster tape;
  • prime the surface with quartz-primer, which will ensure good adhesion and allow you to work longer with the model mass. Ceresit "Priming paint for thin-layer plaster and paint" is suitable for these purposes;
  • the model mass for decorative plastering is mixed with water in a 1: 1 ratio of the finishing putty and starting gypsum plaster. The manufacturer of the mix is not important, but you can use, for example, dry mixes G-Start and Satenpro;
  • the mixture is mixed with a mixer twice, the first time immediately after adding the mixtures, the second time after the mass has stood for several minutes;
  • the plaster is applied to the wall with a layer of 2-3 mm using a spatula and a trowel, making random stains to create the desired texture, special attention is paid to the corners and space near the ceiling molding and the door;
  • the model mass is applied evenly on the wall, and then an additional “textured” layer is made using a plastic trowel, which creates the required volume;
  • after the plaster has dried, the resulting irregularities are smoothed out and sanded with a spatula, paint float and sandpaper (No. 60), the result is a beautiful smooth coating with a pronounced but shallow texture;
  • at the next stage, a deep penetration primer is applied, well smearing all irregularities and avoiding smudges;
  • after priming, the surface is painted, for this white paint is mixed with any selected dye, it will take about 2 hours to dry this layer;
  • with the next layer, the wall is painted with a metallized decor, silver is diluted on a primer in a 1: 1 ratio, then lightly applied with a foam roller on the first layer of paint, without filling all the irregularities (note that there are no traces of the roller);
  • the finishing layer of the surface is made with varnish with the addition of glitter. First, the varnish is diluted with water by 30% to avoid a varnish "crust" on the finished coating, then glitter is added at the rate of 1 tsp. for 1 liter. During work, the varnish must be regularly stirred in order to "lift" the deposited glitter.

Obviously, in this way you can make plaster in any color with a metallic paint finish of any shade and decorate with colored and monochromatic glitter. You can also change the manner of applying the plaster, creating various textures. The varnish gives the coating a fairly high strength and protects the wall from fading in the sun; both matte and glossy varnish can be used for coating.

Flemish plaster - two-tone mass tinted

Working with Flemish plaster differs from the above-mentioned Versailles and Venetian method of application and finishing, it is also done from the usual putty based on the model mass, the recipe for which is given above. The approximate consumption of such plaster is 80 g per 1 sq. m.

The key difference of this coating is that the finished decorative putty is tinted in the mass, that is, the dye is added to the plaster finishing mixture, and not applied in a separate layer. In the video lesson, yellow-brown and coffee plaster is used, which is applied with a large spatula to the prepared surface with movements "from yourself to yourself", thus creating a beautiful two-color texture.

In the next step, the wall is smoothed out with a trowel or trowel. In this case, you do not need to achieve perfect smoothness. The main goal is to mix two colors of plaster and get an interesting two-tone finish.

Flemish plaster is applied in three layers, using different sizes of trowels, reducing their size from layer to layer. On the second and third, you can use a 20 cm instrument. Subsequent layers are applied in such a way that a texture is formed on the wall and irregularities are formed inside smooth surfaces. The size of the "islands" will depend on the volume of the mixture used in one application cycle. The more model mass is on the spatula, the larger "islands" of a smooth surface can be made on the wall. The last layer can be applied with a Venetian trowel according to the “press-flat” scheme, in this case a different texture is obtained.
After applying the plaster, the wall is painted with a deep penetration primer. After complete drying, the plastered area is covered with azure using a trowel. The mixture can be prepared according to the following recipe (consumption 120 g per 1 sq. M):

  • glue for non-woven wallpaper, diluted according to the instructions - 2 parts;
  • panel varnish - 1 part;
  • paint "Silver" - 0.5 parts.

In its structure, glaze is a regular wax, which is used to cover the plaster as a finishing layer. Please note that the wax is not completely removed in the recesses, due to which the texture is obtained with areas of different degrees of silvering. Instead of silver, you can use mother-of-pearl or gold to make azure, which allows you to achieve different lighting effects.
If desired, the wall can be additionally decorated with varnish, which will give the coating strength. For wet rooms, yacht varnish or waterproof façade plaster can be used.

Prague plaster

Prague plaster or, as some masters call it, "Venetian fresco" is applied to a previously tinted surface. For this, facade paint and color scheme of the desired color are added to the soil. The main task is to make a colored base coat at the same time as applying the primer. When applying the primer, there is no need to achieve uniform coverage.

In order to prepare a model mass of decorative Prague plaster, any acrylic putty is used, 1/10 of the sand and color are added to it (preliminary consumption 1.5 kg per 1 sq. M). The first layer of putty is applied with a Venetian trowel, forming an uneven surface in the form of "islands". Due to the sand, a more voluminous texture and a rich type of finish are obtained.

The second layer of putty is applied to the wall by trimming with a trowel. Movement involves pressing the trowel with mortar to the wall in a chaotic manner. Please note that the required two coats are applied one after the other. First, approximately 1 sq. m of surface and the first layer is applied, then the same area is decorated with a texture using the facing method.

In the same way, the next section is covered with a solution. After that, you need to return to the previous area and smooth the plaster "along the tops" with a 20-cm spatula, removing the remaining mortar from the tool. After about five minutes, the finished surface must be polished with a Venetian trowel, while not applying much effort. The degree of readiness of the coating for this operation can be determined by touching the hand; the putty should not stick to the fingers.

At the final stage, the finished surface is painted after applying a layer of deep primer and its complete drying. For the topcoat, a special paint composition is used based on Venetian plaster diluted with water (consumption 150 g per sq. M). Using Venetian plaster as paint will result in a more interesting, slightly shiny surface.

At the final stage, the veneered surface is covered with a special wax for decorative plasters, this is done with a plastic wallpaper spatula. For these purposes, the so-called Parmesan blue can be used, which gives a very beautiful effect of noble shine.

Decorative plaster for facades and fireplaces - stone finish

The proposed technique for decorating surfaces can also be used for finishing facades and fireplace portals, but other mineral fillers are used for these purposes. Dolomite plaster can be considered a good option for choosing a finish "like a stone", but, unfortunately, its price is high enough for finishing the facade.

To reduce the cost of the initial decorative mixture, dolomite flour is used, which is added to stylor-acrylic dispersion (UCAR ™ Latex DC 640) for outdoor use, which has a high water repellency, or acrylic putty (Sniezka Acryl-Putz) for indoor use. Dye, metallized filler, glitter or mother of pearl are also added to the finished material.

It is necessary to apply dolomite putty on the fireplace in two layers, first - with an even layer with a large Venetian trowel, then make a drawing layer by facing the surface with subsequent smoothing with the same trowel.

The surface is lightly sanded with sandpaper No. 150, primed and then decorated with Venetian plaster. It is applied diluted with water like paint using a conventional roller. After application, the plaster is polished with a trowel.

The natural texture of the stone is always distinguished by shiny inclusions, therefore, the surface "like dolomite" is also decorated with a coating with a metallized filler. To do this, copper is added to the wax, it is applied according to the surface texture, bypassing the smooth areas of the cladding. At the final stage, the surface is covered with glitter-free wax and polished with a soft trowel. A two-tone plaster "like a stone" can be obtained by the Flemish application method described above. As you can see from the examples, it is not at all difficult to make a decorative stone on any surface with your own hands and it will not cost much, and the effect will surpass all expectations.

Facade decorative plaster

After gaining experience in applying decorative plaster for interior work, the question arises about exterior decoration. For this purpose, you can use liquid glass, with the help of which a waterproof version of the plaster is made:

  • first, a primer is applied using a diluted solution of water glass;
  • a model solution of waterproof (hydrophobic) plaster is mixed in the following proportions: a ready-made solution of a plaster mixture is used in a ratio of 7: 1 to liquid glass or a 1: 2: 5 plaster is prepared from liquid glass, cement and sand.
