DIY wooden wheel chandelier. Wheel chandeliers

Having become the owners of a small suburban area, we decided to embellish it a little with the help of . They built a retaining wall, made it, broke it, created it - that is, they got down to business with the enthusiasm inherent in beginners. They began to collect antiques: a wooden spinning wheel, a stag, a clay jug. We really wanted to find a cart wheel in the nearest villages, but this task turned out to be the most difficult - all the rarities were bought up by more nimble summer residents. So I had to make the wheel myself. It turned out quite similar - especially if you look at it from afar.

Continuing to arrange the dacha, in the summer we installed a wooden gazebo on the site. When electricity was installed in it, it took a long time to choose which chandelier would best suit the interior natural materials. There were many options, but none of them completely suited us for one reason or another. Suddenly the idea arose to make a chandelier from a wheel that we made ourselves. Moreover, in style and color it matches the furniture of the gazebo. Without hesitation, we decided to carry out our plan.

CHANDELIER FROM WHEEL

So we have . To freshen it up appearance, once again painted the product with decorative varnish to match the color of oak so that the chandelier matches the tone of the gazebo.

At an electrical goods store we bought an E27 ceramic socket for a light bulb and terminal blocks for connecting wires. We took two pieces of copper wire and connected one end to the socket, the other to the terminal block.

Next, insert the cartridge into the wheel hub and secure it with a self-tapping screw.

Let's make 4 small corners from aluminum hangers and screw them to the chandelier on equal distance from the center.

Using wire cutters, cut off 4 equal pieces from the decorative chain, separate the outer links and connect them to the corners.

We will screw 4 hangers with a thread at the end into the rafters and sheathing of the gazebo. We will choose the distance between them experimentally so that the length of the chain is sufficient to secure the chandelier under the roof.

We hang the product by adjusting the length of the chain so that it hangs horizontally to the floor.

To save energy, we will screw a modern LED lamp into a chandelier made from a wheel.

It turned out quite original and, most importantly, light. The wheel chandelier fits perfectly into the wooden interior. Now intimate conversations do not stop with the onset of darkness, but continue until the first roosters crow in the village.

It seems to me that in many village yards you can find an old wheel from a cart to which horses were harnessed. This, in terms of homemade products, is enough interesting material, which can be easily used in the interior garden plot. Or you can, as in the author’s example, use it to make a chandelier in a rustic style.

To work you need:
the wheel itself, varnish or impregnation, blocks for connecting wires, sockets, lamps, cable, screwdriver and drills different types, pliers, wire cutters and screwdriver.

Take the cart wheel. Even if it is not very well preserved, it will give finished product a certain charm. We clean it of any debris, sand it with sandpaper and cover it with wood impregnation and then varnish.

Small non-through holes are drilled into which hooks will be inserted, by which the chandelier will be suspended from the ceiling. You can buy them ready-made or make them yourself from wire; there’s nothing complicated about it. The hooks are located along the rim of the wheel, every 120 degrees.

All metal parts are painted with any paint suitable for color scheme to the interior of the room in which the chandelier will be located. The chain on which the product will hang is also painted. You can simply dip it in a can of paint and hang it over it to let the excess drip off.

Now the cartridges are mounted. The author decided to hang five of them on the wheel. A large lamp will be placed on the central axis. The remaining four holes need to be drilled. Taken feather drill and drill holes in the wheel rim. They house light bulb sockets. The holes must be through, since the wires from the cartridges will be located on the top of the wheel rim. The lamps will be located at the bottom. The author made the holes for the cartridge end-to-end, so there is no need to secure them with anything, although you can secure them to be on the safe side.

For the convenience of connecting all the wires to each other, the author screwed soldering blocks into the side of the bushing, through which the connection will be made. We leave a small piece of wire to connect the chandelier to the network.

Now the chandelier can be hung.

The work took 2 hours. In the end it turned out interesting thing, which will both decorate your room and illuminate it.

The assembled structure should be treated with varnish in 2 - 3 layers. Its shade is selected in accordance with the rest of the interior items. It is advisable to use LED or halogen lamps that do not cause excessive heating of the wood.

The theme of chandeliers is endless and vast. We have already confirmed this more than once with our own examples, citing possible options on our website. However, there are never too many options. After all, each of us has our own morals. Tastes, preferences and goals. Yes, yes, goals also play an important role in choosing and making a chandelier, because in some places you need elegance and charm, in the form of crystal playing in the light, but in others you simply cannot do without the rustic. Everything is according to the theme and application of the chandelier for each specific room. So we believe that for a bar, a large living room with a fireplace, or even a gazebo or an open terrace, you cannot do without a chandelier. With one of the best chandeliers for such places, there will be an ordinary cart wheel, decorated to match this very chandelier. That is, it’s kind of like in a bar in the old west, when candles were placed around the perimeter of the wheel, and the wheel itself was suspended from the ceiling. This is exactly the option we will consider today.

What you need for the “Cartwheel” chandelier

For production work You will need a board 80*40*300, planed. Wood block 20*40*300. PVA glue. You will also need screws, wires, wire, lamp sockets, stain and a brush. You can raise the chandelier using a chain, which should also be included in the budget for your event.

How to make a cartwheel chandelier

Perhaps one of the main and important things is to mark it correctly wooden blanks, which will become the basis for the frame of our chandelier and thus the decorative wheel. In our case, we make the markings into 8 parts, and we also divide the wheel into sectors into 8 parts, that is, the angle will be 45 degrees. It is at this angle that the spokes will be located among themselves. And if we translate this into an angle for the bars, it will be (180-45)/2=67.5 degrees.

We apply the bars and make cuts along the marked lines. We drill the resulting bars on both sides, while inserting a dowel on one side. There is an empty hole on the other side. As a result, the bars should fit into one another, like chain links one after another. Thus closing the circle.

This is exactly what we do next. We apply PVA glue to the mating surfaces and ultimately fasten everything with strap tape. The tape will hold and tighten the structure until the glue dries.

It is advisable to use top and bottom smooth surfaces to prevent the wheel from pulling to the side. In our case, plywood and stones of significant mass were used. We wait 12 hours.

Then let's see what happened.

We cut out the central octagon to which the wheel spokes will be attached. We also drill a hole for the dowels and string the knitting needles onto them using glue.

The end result should be something like this.

But we fasten the spokes around the perimeter of the wheel using self-tapping screws.

Wheel chandeliers

To make the wheel look like a wheel and not an 8-sided one, we cut it down and grind it along the entire perimeter and according to the radius.

To make all procedures easier, including subsequent painting, you can build a simple device.

Now we move on to communications on the chandelier, that is, to the installation of wiring and lamp sockets. In this case we use the usual copper wire and mounting brackets for it.

All that remains is to hang the chandelier on a chain, screw in the lamps, definitely lampshades in the shape of fire. 5 chains are used as suspension. One in the center and 4 to the sides.

That's all, the chandelier is ready and now pleases with its unique charm and, of course, much-needed light in the right place. You can see other options for making chandeliers in the article “DIY Chandelier”.

P.S. Subsequently, the author made another chandelier, but with a change. So, in particular, he began to make dowels on both sides of the knitting needle. It was more convenient this way and all the spokes fit tightly into place. The design is more rigid even without self-tapping screws.
