Sew an upholstered chair with your own hands. DIY bag chair: materials and assembly steps

The bag chair is a comfortable frameless furniture that is suitable not only for adults, but also for children. The product will perfectly decorate the interior of a child's room, bedroom or living room. The chair is comfortable due to its compactness and light weight. If desired, it can be moved to another room, put into a closet or transported in the trunk of a car. You can do it yourself. Use the workshop to make a DIY beanbag chair.

These frameless chairs have the main advantage - the absence of a rigid frame. In the classic version, they are in the shape of a pear or a drop. To select a design, you can view the photo. As a base, you can use a ball or a plain fabric in a bright color.

The furniture is presented in a bag with loose and soft filler. He seems to imitate a liquid. The effect is similar to when there is water in the inner case.

The furniture takes the shape of the body of a seated person, evenly taking on its weight. After a couple of minutes, you will feel how the muscles and body relax, the load is removed from the lower back. An additional warming effect is provided by the low thermal conductivity of the filler.

Among the main advantages of a bean bag chair are the following:

  • Thanks to the use of free-flowing filler, the level of comfort is increased;
  • Frameless furniture is suitable for children, as it has no sharp corners and is environmentally friendly;
  • Upholstered armchairs are very practical, as they can be easily moved while cleaning the floors;
  • The child seat fits perfectly into the interior with the right choice of model;
  • Washing the removable cover is enough to maintain order.

If you are planning indoor renovations or a complete redesign, you shouldn't throw out your chair. It is enough to add filler to it and sew a new cover to make it fit a new interior solution.

Chair manufacturing (MK)

How to sew a beanbag chair with your own hands without mistakes? Understand the design of the product. It includes two elements - outer and inner covers. Balls of styrofoam or polystyrene are poured into the inner cover. As a material, ordinary coarse calico or lining material is used. There should be a small zipper on the filler bag. This will allow you to replace the balls when the previous ones crumple from frequent use.

A zipper and a small handle are attached to the outer cover so that it is convenient to carry the chair around the house. When creating a do-it-yourself beanbag chair in a master class, keep in mind that you need to choose a dense and wear-resistant material. Among them, you can choose a raincoat fabric, a leather substitute, jeans or a curtain fabric.

The following materials are used for work:

  • filler in the amount of 300 l;
  • textiles for the inner cover in the amount of 3 m;
  • two zippers, the length of which is 40 and 100 cm;
  • material for outer cover about 3 m.

Before making a do-it-yourself beanbag chair, the patterns are transferred onto graph paper. You can do without this if you can make a pattern for fabric with soap.

Filler

Typically, foam beads or expanded polystyrene beads are used. This is the simplest and most hygienic material. The balls do not absorb sweat, odors and dirt. This is ideal if you plan to use frameless furniture in your dining room, kitchen, showroom or cafe. As for expanded polystyrene, insects do not start in it and it is non-hygroscopic. An ottoman made of this material is easy to sew and is the most affordable.

Are you wondering how to sew a pear chair using natural materials? When choosing an organic filler, furniture can be used in a room with low humidity. Otherwise, the bags will begin to mold after stitching. The following natural fillers can be used:

  • horsehair;
  • wood shavings;
  • down, feathers or wool;
  • millet, rice or peas;
  • seeds, buckwheat husks or grass.

If you plan to sew a bean bag chair from a sawdust pattern, consider their quality. When filling the pear with your own hands, inspect the shavings. All chips must be removed from it, otherwise there is a chance of getting a splinter or scratches. The easiest way is to use cedar shavings. Its smell is pleasant, but repels insects. Also, this filler has pronounced healing properties.

Important! A do-it-yourself pear chair made of fluff can provoke an allergic reaction. Don't use it for a nursery or plan to tailor it for an allergic person's room.

Stages of work

A suitable model of a frameless chair can be found in numerous photos. Then use the simplest sewing method available. With the materials available, you can get the job done quickly. The following step-by-step instructions apply:

1. Pattern. Before you start creating a frameless chair with your own hands, make a pattern. Find a suitable option, transfer it to the fabric with maximum precision. Do not forget to outline the allowances you will need for the seams. Carry bag chair pattern, saving space. This will use less fabric. At least 1.5 cm will go to the seams so that they do not bloom due to the strong tension of the material. You will need 6 wedges for each cover. One hexagon or circle will be required for the bottom and top of the product for each cover.

2. Formation of the outer cover. After creating a pattern for a bag chair with your own hands, proceed to stitching. Fold the two wedges together so the faces are on the inside. Sew 15 cm from the bottom and top to leave room for the 100 cm zipper. We sweep the zipper and sew it with a typewriter. Another wedge is attached to one side and the seam is ironed. Sew other parts in the same way. After that, the base is sewn with a bottom.

3. Formation of the inner cover. We sew this cover in the same way. But the exception is the zipper, the length of which is 40 cm.Stitch 45 cm from the bottom and top.

4. Stuffing. Let's move on to the very last stage. If you are using artificial material, fill the bag with a respirator mask. Fill the pouch 2/3 full. This makes the chair softer.

So, using this step-by-step plan, you will get the job done quickly. Just buy what you need, make the pattern simpler and sew the parts. The resulting product must correspond to the design of the room in which it is planned to be used.

Recently, frameless furniture has become very popular. A striking representative among this type of furniture is a bag chair or it is also called a pear chair.

How to sew a chair bag: a master class

Before moving on to the very process of making the chair, let's take a look at the features. The chair itself consists of two parts: an outer cover and an inner one.

The outer pouch should be fitted with a long zipper and a desirable small handle for carrying the bag around the apartment. It is also worth considering that it is worth giving preference to dense and wear-resistant materials. It is best to make a cover from raincoat fabric, curtain fabric, leatherette or even jeans.

The inner cover will be filled with small foam balls or simply polystyrene. The material can be used as a lining or regular calico. Also, do not forget about the small zipper for filling the bag and subsequent filling in case of creasing of the balls (after a while).

The dimensions of the future bag are 120 x 90 cm.

Materials for work:

  • Inner cover fabric - 3 m
  • Outer cover fabric - 3 m
  • Zipper 100 cm
  • Zipper 40 cm
  • Filler - 300 l

Before you make a bag chair with your own hands, you need to carefully reshape all the details of the chair pattern using graph paper. But it is possible to do without it, and with the help of chalk or soap, reshoot the details directly onto the fabric.

Pattern

To simplify the question of how to sew a chair bag: the pattern is given with all sizes.

Stages of work

After the pattern has been transferred to the fabric, mark the seam allowances. They should be at least 1.5 cm to avoid unraveling. If the fabric is loose, then it is better to process the edges of the sections with a zigzag stitch.

The wedges for the chair must be cut in the amount of 6 pieces for each cover. Hexagon for top and bottom - 1 piece for each cover.

The approximate location of the pattern on the fabric:

We start assembling the parts of the outer cover.

We put the first two wedges together so that the front side is inside. Taking into account the sewing-in of a zipper of 100 cm, we sew 15 cm from the bottom and from the top.Then we mark the zipper and sew it using a typewriter.

Attach the next wedge and press the seam to one side. We do the same with the rest of the parts of the chair base. To fix the seam allowances, on the front side of the cover we make a line at a distance of 1 cm from the seam. Stitching is best done using the machine's maximum stitch size (4-5).

Then we sew the base and the bottom of the chair.

Let's move on to sewing the inner cover. The sewing process is the same as for the outer cover, except for sewing in a 40 cm zipper.To do this, top and bottom need to be sewn 45 cm each.

After the inner cover is ready, we proceed to stuffing with polystyrene balls. Be extremely careful with this material as it can cause serious consequences if inhaled. Do not neglect the use of a protective mask from the pharmacy. We fill the cover about 2/3 of the total volume of the bag to make the chair soft.

I am also attaching a small video tutorial on sewing a beanbag to the above described work process.

  • do not use too large foam balls, as they will crumple very quickly, and the chair will need to be stuffed very often
  • the use of cheap foam crumbs is also undesirable, since it is a product of recycling waste packaging foam. It's best not to risk your chair getting an unpleasant odor.
  • use a Whatman paper rolled into a tube to work with polystyrene. This will help prevent the balls from sticking to your hands and surrounding objects.

In this article I will talk about creating an original bean bag chair. How to sew it yourself, what material to choose. I will describe the properties of fillers, which are beneficial to use, and which are better not to use. I will describe the sewing process, and explain the features of this furniture.

How to make a bean bag chair with your own hands

A bean bag, an air pouf, a bean bag or a pear - frameless, comfortable, comfortable furniture. There is a resilient filler inside the fabric bag. Due to its simple design, it is possible to sew it yourself, even without having the basic skills of a seamstress.

Frameless furniture is made in 3 types - in the form of a drop, a ball and a pear. For each option, drawings, materials, tools and filler are used. It is necessary to decide on the choice of the shape of the furniture, draw up the drawings, prepare the material. Then connect the cut out parts of the material, and fill.

Material selection

The color of the material, its footage depends on the choice of the master and the drawings.

You will need 2 types of material - for the outer and the hidden cover. A hidden bag is sewn from:

  • polyester;
  • satin, raincoat;
  • mattress fabric;
  • tisi.

These fabrics are not expensive and highly durable. The outer cover is sewn from tapestry, artificial leather, chenille. The fabrics are pleasant to the touch and do not get dirty quickly.

The selected material must breathe. There should be a possibility to remove the cover and replace the filling. The zipper is sewn into both bags.

Filler

Natural filler can cause allergies.

Expanded polystyrene is a quality filler for frameless furniture. But a mixture of silicone balls with expanded polystyrene is distinguished by its durability. Make this mixture yourself. If expanded polystyrene is bought for a low price in large volumes, then silicone is ordered on the forums, and delivery takes 2-3 weeks.

The filling of polypropylene and holofiber is also used for the pear chair. Polypropylene restores its original state, holofiber is mixed with polypropylene to improve softness. The mixture of fillers has water-repellent and antibacterial properties.

In addition to synthetic filling, rice or beans are poured into the bottom, which absorb moisture. Adherents of environmentally friendly products stuff it with bird fluff, a mixture of sawdust, horsehair. However, bird fluff can become damp and clump, wood shavings seep through the fabric and cause inconvenience.

Required tools

You will need a standard seamstress kit:

  • scissors, centimeter, zipper;
  • graph paper, needles;
  • reinforced or silk threads;
  • sewing machine, overlock;
  • crayon, pins, pencils, thimble.

Overlocks are bought or made to order in the atelier. The thimble will protect your fingers from needle pricks.

Pattern creation

The standard dimensions of the outer bag are diameter 90 cm, length 250 cm.

The parameters of the bag are plotted on graph paper. The bag for the filler is sewn 2-3 cm less. The diameter of the circle is 70-72 cm. The lower circle is drawn in a quarter of the size, then, when cutting, the fabric is folded. The upper circle is made less than 20-25 cm. The part is drawn as a whole, and a couple of cm allowance is left for the zipper. Leave 1-2 cm for the allowance for the side wedges.

Details are laid out from the inside of the fabric, they are placed compactly.

Sewing process

The pattern from graph paper is transferred to paper, cut out. Next, circle with chalk on the inside of the fabric. First, they draw the size of the pattern, then mark the centimeters for the allowance. Parts are cut out with an allowance. It turns out 6 side parts for the inner and outer bag, 2 parts for the bottom and 2 parts for the outer circle.

The cut parts are fastened with pins, sewn with bait, overlocked. Details of the lower and upper circle will be baited separately, leaving room for lightning. Sometimes zippers are placed on the side of the bag. The entire structure is hemmed, sewn on a typewriter. Then zippers are sewn in. The locks are sewn with a double seam for strength.

The inner is placed in the outer, and only then is it clogged with filler. It is not recommended to hammer the product to refusal, the chair does not accept the rider's silhouette poorly.

Put several bags of silica gel inside to collect the smell of the filler.

Features of the bag chair

Frameless furniture is durable, and is designed for the maximum human weight - 100-150 kg. Depending on the model, the chair bag is sewn in a single layer.

The dimensions of furniture when sewing yourself can be adjusted independently. In addition, it is more profitable to sew a chair yourself than to buy it on the Internet. The pouf is used as a gift.

It is enough to simply sew such a piece of furniture with your own hands. It is necessary to purchase material, filling, sewing tools. For a long service life, choose a synthetic filler. The finished product is placed in the living room, nursery, personal office or library.

The cover is sewn under the interior of the room, then there will be no question of determining the location of frameless furniture in the house.

The most important thing in creating a frameless chair is a pattern that has been tested by many and is ready to be transferred to fabric. The CHUDO CHAIR team offers you several options for patterns of convenient and easy-to-sew bean-runs.
Let's start simple?

"Geometric" armchairs

Patterns of frameless furniture in the form of an ordinary cube need no introduction: the only details that you have to cut are the squares. Exactly the same, in the amount of 6 pieces. Don't forget to sew in the zipper when assembling!

It is a little more difficult to make a cylindrical one, the pattern of which is presented below.

It is not in vain that the diameter of the seat exceeds the diameter of the bottom - this design will allow the bag to be "squeezed" without stretching the fabric of the cover. Long service life of the product is guaranteed!

Bag chair pattern "Pear"

The pattern also doesn't look very complicated. The "petals" of the cover can be sewn onto the base in the form of a hexagon (as shown) or onto a completely round piece. In the latter case, the construction of the pattern and the assembly of the elements will be more difficult and will require at least basic sewing skills!

Bean run in the shape of a ball

You can fulfill the dream of a real football fan (no matter how old he is!) By stitching together 32 pieces in the form of small pentagons and larger hexagons. Yes, the pattern fits only 2 geometric shapes.

Ordinary armchair

Finally, a more complicated option. The beanbag chair, the pattern of which is presented below, resembles neither sports equipment nor fruit. Most of all, the product looks like ... an ordinary chair!

The assembly of the product is very simple:

  • 4 side parts are sewn together;
  • the bottom is sewn in (do not forget about the zipper!);
  • the front part is sewn.

You can customize any of the patterns presented for yourself - the basic options are created so that you can experiment!

Since its appearance on the market, frameless upholstered furniture has won a solid place in the interior of residential premises. The most striking representative of this type of setting is a bean bag chair. It can also be found in libraries, movies, and even parks. No sofa will be as comfortable as this design. An additional plus of this type of furniture is that it will not be difficult to sew a beanbag chair with your own hands.

Bean bag, beanbag, pouf chair - there are many names for a soft frameless chair. There are no less varieties of it. It can take many different forms:

  • square or rectangular;
  • pear shape;
  • round;
  • in the form of a flower, some kind of fruit, heart, washer, etc.

The choice of shape depends only on the preferences of the future owner of the chair. The following can be used as a filler:

  • expanded polystyrene balls;
  • beans, peas;
  • shavings, sawdust, feathers.

It is not difficult to purchase any of the fillers. Expanded polystyrene is most preferred. It does not cause allergies, mold, or attract rodents or insects. For a country house, it is better to use only it. In addition, a soft ottoman filled with it will turn out to be especially comfortable - it will take a shape convenient for a person sitting or lying on it, and its granules, unlike beans and peas, are not at all hard. It is better to choose small balls, as large ones will quickly crumple.

The amount of padding depends on the dimensions of the beanbag chair. A chair for an adult may need from 250 to 350 liters. Better to buy 400 liters of polystyrene foam. The remainder will come in handy for the future, since during operation the material is crumpled and it can be refilled about once a year.

The appearance of a hand-made pear chair determines the material from which it is made. The fabric can be very different. First of all, it must be durable and practical. Better if it can be machine washed. Thanks to the variety of materials, a do-it-yourself pouf can fit into any interior. For a laconic, strict style, classic or modern design, bags made of leatherette, artificial fur, velvet, velor are suitable. For the nursery, you can choose fabric with pictures, bright colors.

Before starting to study the question of how to make a do-it-yourself bean bag chair, it is worth deciding on the purpose, shape and size of the structure. The amount of fabric, filler, and other materials that will need to be purchased depends on this.

What do you need to work?

In order to make an armchair with your own hands, you need the following materials:

  • lining fabric;
  • fabric for an external decorative cover;
  • filler;
  • durable colored threads for sewing;
  • two zippers for fastening covers;
  • graph paper for drawings.

The fabric of the lining of a handmade ottoman should be strong, even rough. You can take an old duvet cover or pillowcase that you no longer plan to use (provided that the fabric is intact, without scuffs and holes). The threads and snake for the main cover must be selected to match the color of the fabric.

From the tools you need to prepare:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Ruler, pencil;
  • Scissors.

If there is no sewing machine, and there is no desire to purchase it in order to make an ottoman yourself, then you need to prepare a thick needle for sewing, strong threads, a thimble. In this case, the process will be much longer and more laborious.

The main stages of making a chair

Do-it-yourself master class on an upholstered armchair can clearly demonstrate how to make an ottoman. Consider the most popular pear-shaped bean bag chair. This design is convenient in that it has a kind of back that gently supports the neck and head.

First of all, you need a pear chair pattern. It consists of a round or hexagonal base and four or six petals. The combination of elements can be different, but these options are the simplest and most common.

Click to enlarge

The work begins with the preparation of the pattern for the bean bag chair. A drawing of all the details of the covers should be done on a 1x1 scale on graph paper. Thus, it will be clearly visible how much fabric is needed for a do-it-yourself ottoman.

In order to increase or decrease the dimensions of the future bean bag chair, if those indicated in the pattern do not suit, on paper, all measurements of the parts must be changed to the same value of centimeters.

Having drawn a diagram on paper, the parts are cut out and, fixing with pins on the fabric, they cut it along the contour, leaving an allowance (about 1.5 cm of fabric after the border of the part). When stitching the elements, the allowance ensures that the chair does not creep along the seam.

Then you need to sew the covers on a typewriter or by hand, sew in zippers. The zipper in the inner case allows you to conveniently fill it with Styrofoam and add it later. The snake of the outer cover is needed to remove it for cleaning or washing. The joints of the parts should be sewn on a typewriter from the inside out, and the outer cover should still be stitched with a large seam on the front side. The seams then need to be smoothed out with an iron. You can attach a handle to the chair for easy portability.

After the covers are ready, you can add the filler. If it is expanded polystyrene, then this must be done carefully, since it is very electrified and does not fall asleep neatly, but scatters throughout the room. You can insert a bag of material inside the case, cut it open and carefully pull it out while holding the edges of the zipper. You can also build a funnel from a plastic bottle or paper and pour granules through it.

The cover should be filled so that it keeps the shape of the pattern, but does not hammer it to failure, there should still be an empty space for the most comfortable effect.

At the end, the outer one is put on the inner case, and the zipper is fastened. A do-it-yourself chair at home can be considered ready to use.

Care of the finished product

A self-made soft beanbag chair will last a long time if you take care of it. The options for this care depend on the material from which we sew the main cover. Not all fabrics are machine washable. You should know about this in advance. For a nursery, it is better to choose practical fabrics that you can not be afraid to get dirty.

The design, filled with foam balls, is less whimsical than in the case of other fillers. A chair filled with everything except expanded polystyrene requires periodic replacement of the filler due to the following reasons:

  • Dampness can lead to mold formation;
  • Some natural materials, when caking, not only decrease in volume, but form a dense layer that must be removed;
  • The appearance of insects inside the upholstery will entail the replacement of the entire filler and special treatment of the covers (it is better to change the inner one).
  • Styrofoam also shrinks over time, but in this case, it is enough to simply add a new one, and the ottoman will regain its former properties.

Having tested for the first time a ready-made soft chair, you can immediately understand whether it was made correctly or not. If the body does not fall to the floor, but lies on the padding and gently envelops from all sides, then the proportions are calculated correctly. Errors can be corrected by suturing the cover or by adjusting the amount of filling material. A well-made pouf is so comfortable that every family member will probably want their own.
