Snake as a symbol. Snake in mythology of different times and peoples

The nouns "serpent" and "snake" are etymologically the same. They have a common root with the word "earth" and means "a reptile crawling on the ground." It is generally accepted that the word "snake" was taboo, that is, they tried not to pronounce it, for fear of causing trouble.

Symbolic meaning in various mythological traditions

The serpent as a symbol is represented in almost all mythologies, and is associated with fertility, earth, female productive power, water, rain, on the one hand, and hearth, fire (especially heavenly), as well as the male fertilizing principle, on the other.

The snake coiled up in rings is identified with the cycle of phenomena. This is the solar principle, and the lunar, life and death, light and darkness, good and evil, wisdom and blind passion, healing and poison, guardian and destroyer, spiritual and physical rebirth (See more Ouroboros). Phallic symbol, fertilizing male power, husband of all women, the presence of a snake is almost always associated with pregnancy. The snake accompanies all female deities, including the Great Mother, and is often depicted in their arms or twisted around them.

The chthonic serpent is a manifestation of the aggressive power of the gods of the underworld and darkness. Since the snake lives underground, it is in contact with the underworld and has access to the powers, omniscience and magic of the dead. She is universally considered the source of initiation and rejuvenation and the mistress of the bowels. In its chthonic hypostasis, the snake is hostile to the Sun and all solar and spiritual forces, symbolizing the dark forces in man. At the same time, the positive and negative beginnings are in conflict, as in the case of Zeus and Typhon, Apollo and Python, Osiris and Set, an eagle and a snake, etc. It also symbolizes the original instinctive nature, a surge of vitality, uncontrolled and undifferentiated, potential energy , an inspiring spirit. It is a mediator between Heaven and Earth, between earth and the underworld.

In archaic mythologies, the role of the serpent connecting heaven and earth is most often dual (it is both beneficial and dangerous), then in developed mythological systems (where the serpent often bears the features of a dragon, outwardly different from an ordinary snake), its negative role is often found primarily as the embodiment of the lower (water, underground or otherworldly) world.

Sea serpent

Sea serpent is a term used in cryptozoology and mythology to denote a sea serpent-like creature, mentioned in myths and legends of different peoples of the world and in eyewitness accounts. The image is presented in various mythological traditions.

The serpent in folklore

The serpent is an image of world folklore that has received numerous variations at different stages of cultural development and in different national traditions. The serpent is a popular character in fairy tales and epics, most often an enemy with whom the hero will have to enter into an implacable struggle. In Russian fairy tales, snakes are a multi-headed creature that can fly and spew out fire. In a number of plots, the snake is the abductor; he takes away the royal daughters, besieges the city with the demand for tribute in the form of a woman - to be devoured or for marriage. The serpent guards the border to the "other" world, most often a bridge across the river, it devours everyone trying to cross. The fight with the snake and the victory over it is one of the main feats of the hero of fairy tales. In epics, the theme of snake fighting can acquire a "state" coloring: Dobrynya performs her first heroic deed, defeating the snake as an enemy of Kiev and freeing the one captured by him. Traces of mythological ideas have been preserved in the epics: the motive of the birth of a hero from a serpent (Volkh Vseslavievich), the motive of the serpent guarding the kingdom of the dead (“Mikhail Potyk”). A common feature of all snake plots is the absence of any real descriptions of its appearance.

The horse is considered the mythological antipode of the snake. The snake as a zoomorphic symbol of the moon opposes the horse as a solar personification. The motive of the Song of Oleg the Wise is determined by the archetype of this symbolism. A warrior on horseback, knocking down a snake, is a very common symbolic composition among various peoples. In the symbolism of the plot about George the Victorious, the snake personified paganism. If a warrior on horseback was a sign of the squad, then a snake was a priesthood. The victory over her was interpreted as a historical triumph of the military class over the Magi

The serpent in Bazhov's tales

Some of the most striking images snake in Russian literature they will tales of Pavel Petrovich Bazhov... His Snake and snakes, as well as Daiko's snake from the tale "Golden Dykes" - present to the reader Skazov almost all the classic features of the mythical snake:

  1. Wisdom. The Great Snake at one glance recognizes his weakness in Kostka - greed for gold, which leads the young man to death. It is noteworthy that the last parting words of Poloz to Kostka and Panteley - Don't be greedy... This demonstrates that Poloz is not an initially evil spirit (as in the Bible), but a neutral being. The same is confirmed by the old man Semyonich, who introduces the guys to Poloz.
  2. Temptation / snake / serpent duality. In the tale "The Snake's Trail", the Snake's daughter, the snake, initially appears before Kostka in the form of an attractive girl, from whose passion Kostka finds his death when the snake appears before him in the form of a snake. A similar creature, Lamia, can be found among the ancient Greeks and Romans - a snake girl who destroys young men. This is the duality of the serpent / snake, as the spirit of the underworld - both wealth and the restless dead come from under the earth ...
  3. Serpent / serpent connection with the underworld. Not only Poloz is the owner of all gold, but also Daiko's serpent from the tale “Golden Dykes” is a “terrible golden serpent” (a distant echo of the ancient Slavic underground god Ozem?), And he is also dualistic, like the Poloz with his daughters. On the one hand, he endows Glafira with Perfil with gold, and on the other, because of gold, the culture of the Old Believers in the Urals disappears, since the "Britous" really came running and destroyed their entire desert / hermitage. On the other hand, in the tale "Golden Hair", the Bashkir hero Ailyp, having married the daughter of Poloz Golden Hair, loses the opportunity to live with her in the world of people (Father-Poloz does not allow), and must escape with her from Poloz under the island - in another the underground kingdom, where the Runner has no way - and also become an underground spirit. The Tale also emphasizes the inhuman beauty of the Golden Hair maiden and her magical hair. (It should be noted that another "snake-like" woman, Medusa the Gorgon, also had beautiful hair, until Athena, the Olympian deity, turned it into a serpent and generally disfigured Medusa, making her a monster.)

The dragon, as the primordial being that gives rise to everything, personifies the undoubtedly feminine principle... The image of a female dragon deity or a snake deity, as well as a half-woman-half-dragon or half-woman-half-snake is often found in myths (Echidna, Tiamat, Sipaktli, Nagi, Uadzhet, etc.). In later myths, this may be a goddess with snakes instead of hair or snakes in her hair (Erinia Typhon, Gorgon Medusa, Night Hecate), a goddess with snakes in her hands ("Goddess with snakes" from Knossos), a serpentine goddess, mistress of snakes, capable of sending them on opponents (the myth of Isis and Ra), the goddess, in whose chariot dragons are harnessed (Hecate, Medea).

Or it can be a goddess, fairy or sorceress (as the lowest emanation of the goddess), capable of transforming into a snake or dragon. The last motive is quite popular, it underlies many medieval legends - which received a specific sound thanks to the influence of Christianity - and fairy tales. The fairy Melusine and similar characters are most typical here. True, they, unlike their ancient prototypes, are not so much insidious demonic succubi as victims of betrayal by their own spouse who violated a certain taboo (for example, he should not have seen his wife naked, or seen her during childbirth, or see her on Saturdays, because at this time she turns into a snake, dragon or siren). The motives behind the desire of such a magical creature to marry a mortal are quite simple: “The snake, doomed for some kind of guilt to suffer forever in a serpentine body, seeks an alliance with a person who is the only one capable of freeing her from ill-fated immortality in order to allow her to die a natural death and then enjoy a different blissful life. " (12).

Having violated the ban, the spouse deprives the magic wife of such an opportunity and condemns to eternal torment (for, as you know, a chance is given only once). Nevertheless, another line can be traced: for the fact that a mortal marries her and promises to fulfill her condition, Melusine grants him power, fame, power, wealth, that is, “in all these cases, she appears as a medieval reincarnation of the mother goddess, like a fertility fairy. " (13) * And the main wealth that she gives him are children; “It is they who remain to live on earth after the disappearance of the fairy mother and the death of the human father” (14), through them the story continues, continuity is realized. Similarly, Indonesian nagas, female water spirits, and - also called nagas - semi-divine creatures with a snake body in Indian mythology - often marry mortals and become the founders of dynasties.

Raymondin, by the way, meets Melusine and her two sisters at the source. Thus, the original connection between the snake and the water is not lost.

(14) Ibid, p. 197.

Subsequently, there is a separation and even opposition of the images of the dragon-serpent and the woman. Examples include the myths of Perseus and Andromeda, Jason and Medea, Eve and the Serpent. Andromeda and the sea monster, to whom she was allegedly given to be torn apart, are in fact two hypostases of one creature. "The royal daughter is not at all a sacrifice intended for a sea serpent or a wild beast: she, naked, was chained to a rock by Bel, Marduk, Perseus or Hercules, after he defeated the monster - her offspring." (15) * This is indirectly confirmed by the previous victory of Perseus over the goddess-with-snakes-instead of-hair-Medusa. The same with Jason: the dragon guarding the Golden Fleece was probably at first an emanation, the hypostasis of Medea. The unity of the Serpent and Eve is well traced in some Gnostic myths (for example, "The Origin of the World" or "The Essence of the Archons"), where the true Eve-Zoe, "entering" the Serpent of the Mentor, advises Eve, carnal, in her likeness, to taste the fruit from the tree of Gnosis, into which tree the true Eve-Zoe turned into. ** Yes, and in the traditional Old Testament version, Eve and the Serpent appear to be on the same side: both of them are the causes of the Fall and the curse of the human race.

In the early medieval "Life of St. Marcellus "St. Marcellus enters into a struggle with a dragon-serpent devouring the corpse of a woman who has violated her conjugal fidelity, a harlot. Through the Christian symbolism, there are more ancient ideas about the demoness-dragon, capable of acting in the role of a succubus. It is not for nothing that the theme of the harlot and the snake becomes an "iconographic symbol of voluptuousness." (16). Here we can recall the Great Goddess of Babylon, called by the biblical prophets “the great harlot” (Rev. 17: 1), “a lecher of a pleasant appearance, skillful in sorcery, who by her fornication sells the nations and her charms - the tribes” (Nahum. 3, 4) ... “And on her forehead was a name written: Mystery, Babylon the great, mother to harlots and abominations of the earth” (Rev. 17: 5). The harlot of Babylon is contrasted with “the woman clothed in the sun,” Heavenly Jerusalem, who fled from the dragon-Satan, who finally rejected the snake.

Serpentine variety

The snake is represented in almost all mythologies of the world as a symbol associated, on the one hand, with fertility, earth, wisdom, with female productive power, water, rain, and on the other, with the hearth, fire (especially heavenly), as well as male fertilizing the beginning. Images of a snake are found in the art of the Upper Paleolithic. The cult of the serpent was widespread in Tripoli *, where he personified the awakening of nature, spring. On clay female statues, the serpent was often depicted as a creature protecting and fertilizing women. Almost not a single ceramic vessel of the Tripolians can do without a snake, but they did not always see it as a good defender of the hearth.

* Trypillian culture, archeological culture of the Eneolithic era on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR, Moldavia and Romania. Named after s. Tripoli near Kiev. Remains of settlements, burials, treasures, painted ceramics. Facilities: agriculture, cattle breeding, hunting. fishing.

Already in those distant times, people emphasized its duality. In the representations of Trypillians, probably, there lived some kind of evil snake - a dragon associated with a snake. Such is depicted, as a rule, on the lids of vessels from the outside and from the inside, and his appearance is fierce - round eyes, large horns, wing-claws. A double spiral is already wrapping around the vessel, now scaring away, now threatening everyone who wants to touch it.

Apparently, the spiral was for the Trypillians a symbol of what they worshiped or feared, perhaps something incomprehensible, but eternal: whether the change of seasons, day and night, the mysteries of life and death, the rotation of the starry sky or the circular motion of the sun, i.e. That is, what they saw, but they were not given to comprehend. The spiral served for them as a sign of what they saw, and perhaps its meaning.

Since the time of the Upper Paleolithic, the opposition of the snake and birds has been known, which was continued in early Eurasian art: birds are like animals of the upper world, snakes are of the lower one. However, this opposition was replaced by a combination of signs of a snake and a bird in the form of a flying winged horse - a dragon. Comparison of the images of a snake and a horse led to the appearance of a mythological image of a dragon-snake with the head of a horse and the body of a snake.

As a symbol of fertility, the snake was especially widespread in Crete and Cyprus, where images of women (priestesses) with snakes in their hands were found. In Egypt, the goddess of fertility and harvest, Renenutet appears in the form of a cobra or a cob-headed woman.

The snake was one of the attributes of the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. In the Scythian-Iranian tradition, a goddess with snake legs and two snakes growing from her shoulders is known. The ancient Indian world serpent held the earth on itself. A similar cosmic function of the holder of the Earth was performed by the world serpent in Scandinavian and Egyptian mythologies. In the first it was the serpent of Midgard-Jormungand, living in the ocean and encircling the entire Earth, and in the second, the serpent of Mehenta, which surrounds the Earth.

The most popular in the Russian epic are Serpent Gorynych and Tugarin Zmeevich winged, and later they are most likely dragons. There is also a Serpent (feminine) in Russian fairy tales, which sees its sight once a year on Ivanov (Kupala) day, and then she rushes at a person or beast, piercing her victim through and through (there is a similar belief in Western European mythology about a snake that flies like an arrow into the jaws of a crocodile and pierces his side). In Slavic mythology, snakes have their own king, whose name is Basilisk.

According to popular beliefs, the snake possesses demonic properties and heroic strength, it knows medicinal herbs, has innumerable riches and living water. Sometimes the snake appears as a terrible monster that turns into a handsome man and enters into illegal relationships. These "secondary", "secondary" representations are associated with the main one - with the image of a fiery serpent, personifying the actual phenomenon of nature - lightning, the bend of which really reminded the ancient man of a snake on earth, and in the sky - a shooting star, for the star seemed to be identical flashing lightning.

In the Russian chronicle, in a record near 1556, we read: “There is a sign of the place where the star fell in heaven, it appears like a serpent, without a head, standing ... otherwise, like a trunk, a tail sbrashe, and like a barrel and fall to the ground with fire and like smoke along land ". Many legends identify the snake with a thundercloud. The very epithet of the serpent "fiery" testifies to its connection with a thunderous flame.

Since ancient times, man has been amazed at the vitality of the snake. Continuing to wriggle, her severed body evoked awe and awe of her special vitality. There was a ritual killing of snakes. The snake could bite deadly, and therefore it was personified with the forces of evil, darkness, hell. In Greek mythology, there is a myth about Typhon - a monster with a hundred snake heads capable of barking, hissing, and growling.

Typhon marries the Echidna - a half-virgin, half-snake with a beautiful face, but terrible in its serpentine essence; and from this marriage the same terrible monsters are born - the Chimera, which devastated Greece, the Lernian hydra, which abducted cattle and also devastated the lands in the vicinity of Lerna, and others. Typhon, thrown into the ground as punishment for a rebellion against Zeus, lies there bound and spews out flame, shaking the soil.

Serpent and eagle

The fight between the serpent and the eagle, which is the personification of goodness and light, is a very ancient and widespread motive. Traces of him are found on the goblet of the Sumerian ruler Gudea (XXII century BC); in the well-known images of Georgy the victorious, conquering the serpent in Russian icons, and the "Thracian horseman"; in the Bronze Horseman cast from metal in St. Petersburg. In all these images, horsemen were associated with eagles. In printed engravings, the triumph of virtue was embodied in the image of an eagle with a defeated snake in its claws.

Hindu myths also depict a battle between the wise serpent Naga and the bird Garuda. The daughter of Naga in the guise of a girl with a truly serpentine cunning wrested the love from the chaste youth Arjuna. "You are obliged to help the unfortunate," she said, "and am I not unhappy in love with you?"

In ancient times, a snake in the mines of an eagle was often interpreted as a symbol of the victory of the patriarch over the matriarch: the snake meant in this case the feminine principle and sacred (secret) wisdom. The Homeric Greeks considered an eagle with a bloody snake in its paws as a good omen, which meant that Troy would fall: the Eagle-Zeus would overcome the serpentine "feminine" principle, for who, if not Aphrodite, pushed Helen to break the holy law of the patriarch and flee with Paris.

On the island of Kofy, the goddess Medusa was revered, who in Greek mythology turned into a monster. His appearance was terrible: winged, covered with scales, with snakes instead of hair, with fangs, with a gaze that turns all living things into stone. But under matriarchy, Medusa's serpentine attributes meant only immortality and holiness ... Medusa became one of the gorgons, she was immortal. (According to one of the myths, Pesus chopped off her head and from her blood Pegasus was born - a winged horse that personified poetic inspiration.)

Written "Snake"

In the "Old Testament" the serpent (now masculine) became the devil-serpent. Fear entered the world through him. But the serpent cursed by God continued to be a symbol of wisdom.

Christians saw the snake as a two-faced creature that embodied both good and evil. In the medieval Bestiary, one reads that wisdom aroused apprehensive mistrust. Moses in the desert protected his compatriots from ailments and snake bites with the help of the Brazen Serpent.

In the II - III centuries. the following story appeared in the book "Physiologist".

The snake, feeling that it was getting old and weakened, began to fast and finished only when its skin peeled off (the fast lasted 40 days and 40 nights). Then the snake found a crevice, crawled into it, threw off its old skin and rejuvenated

A snake shedding old skin was a familiar illustration of medieval bestiaries, in which it occupied a middle position between two groups of animals: between fictional and quite real, but endowed with incredible properties. The snake was depicted with a female body, and with a lion, and with a scorpion, with countless heads. The free flight of fantasy eventually turned the snake into a Basilisk werewolf, into a flying serpent - a dragon, into an adder. According to one of the versions, the Egyptian queen Cleopatra made the asp sting herself, according to another version, she was bitten by a fantastic snake - "hypnal", from the bite of which a person falls asleep and dies in a dream.

The pages of manuscripts and pediments of medieval temples were adorned with images of the most terrible of the snakes - the emopris, which, according to legend, squeezed all the blood out of people. In ancient legends, it was said that a siren snake, capable of racing faster than a horse, lives in Arabia, and in Italy a boa boa milks cows.

Found in all Slavic countries, the viper - "the offspring of the viper" - is described in the "Bestiary" as a very harmful creature. The human imagination went from the image of the world serpent as a symbol of the Universe, embracing time, eternity and immortality, wrapped around the planet in a ring and waiting for the end of the world to swallow it, to the ordinary "baked snake" - a kind of brownie. So he was y of the Western Slavs and was very reminiscent of the Indian Naga.

The snake is a symbol that has left a noticeable mark on the history and culture of many countries. For many centuries, it caused people to associate with death and rebirth at the same time. Some peoples deified reptiles, others trembled before them. What is known about this mysterious symbol, which haunts researchers even today?

Snake - a symbol of healing

Historians believe that people first guessed to use the image of a snake as an emblem of healing back in the second millennium BC. This happened in Ancient Babylon, which researchers explain by the animal cult that existed in this state. Initially, the reptile was depicted without attributes, but gradually they appeared.

Of course, one cannot fail to mention the most famous symbol. A bowl with a snake is an emblem that appeared in medicine around the seventh century BC. At the same time, the image of Aesculapius' daughter Hygea, holding a vessel and a reptile, was actively used. As you know, in ancient times, many diseases were treated with snake venom, and the bowl served as a container for it. The return of this image, forgotten for many years, took place already in the 16th century on the initiative of Paracelsus.

What other attributes was added to the symbol (snake) in medicine? The ancient people did not limit themselves to the cup; the staff of Asclepius was also popular. Asclepius is a mythical Greek healer who was attributed to divine origin. Among his many talents was the ability to raise the dead. Legend has it that once it was the snake that helped the healer to revive the murdered son of King Minos.

Christianity

The snake is a symbol that in the Christian faith is associated with good and evil at the same time. On the one hand, the image of a reptile shedding its skin is associated with Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself and ascended to heaven.

On the other hand, in the Bible, the serpent is presented as a tempter, deftly seducing Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Therefore, this image speaks of treachery, greed, rebelliousness. It is not surprising that the reptile was often endowed with a female head, such drawings symbolized temptation, temptation.

Buddhism, Hinduism

The snake is a symbol that has been noted not only in the Christian religion. For example, in Hinduism, sacred cobras enjoyed great respect, which were considered as protectors. The Hindus believed that reptiles were guarding the gods while they were enjoying their rest. It is not surprising that the image of Vishnu sitting in a cobra ring has become widespread.

In general, in Buddhism, there was an ambivalent attitude towards snakes. On the one hand, the followers of this religion also worshiped cobras. This is confirmed by the image of the Buddha, who is comfortably located in the shade of a cobra, protecting him from the sun with the help of his hoods. Some Buddhists even saw in snakes (cobras) the most powerful god who reincarnates in order to save humanity from hunger and disease.

On the other hand, the creeping reptile, depicted next to a pig and a rooster, was considered by adherents of religion as a symbol of sins.

Greece, Rome

The snake is a symbol of wisdom. This statement was never questioned by the inhabitants of Ancient Greece, who loved to portray a reptile in the hands of famous healers and saviors: Hippocrates, Aesculapius, Hermes. In addition, the snake was considered the incarnation of the legendary healer Aesculapius, who is credited with significant achievements in the field of medicine.

The fact that the inhabitants of the country dedicated this reptile to the god Apollo can serve as a confirmation that the snake is a symbol associated with wisdom in Ancient Greece. The Greeks had no doubt that the beautiful god not only protects people from the forces of darkness, but also gives them knowledge. A similar function was assigned to the goddess of wisdom Athena, who was often depicted in the company of a snake.

Of course, symbols with snakes were very popular in the territory of Ancient Rome. They were given a meaning similar to that described above, so reptiles were often depicted in the hands of local gods and heroes.

In Russian fairy tales

In Russian culture, the dual symbol of the snake has also been repeatedly noted. Its significance, as in most other countries, was attributed ambiguous. On the one hand, in many fairy tales one can find mention of the fact that a person who has eaten the heart of a reptile will be able to learn the language of the animal and plant world. This suggests that creeping reptiles were associated in Russia with wisdom and knowledge.

On the other hand, the famous Serpent Gorynych acts as an insidious villain, with whom brave heroes are forced to risk their lives. Victory over him means nothing more than the absolute triumph of good over evil.

Two snakes

Often found in the culture of various countries and even more mysterious symbol - two snakes. If reptiles coiled with each other, such an emblem is associated with the union of two powerful forces - Destiny and Time. The image of two creeping reptiles, tightly grasping each other's tail, hints that even two complete opposites come from the same source.

The image of two snakes entwining a staff or a tree is also often found in culture. An example of such a symbol is the famous caduceus, an emblem used in medicine. This also indicates the duality of reptiles, capable of bringing poison and healing, health and disease at the same time.

Various images

What does the image of an innocent child playing with a snake represent? Such a picture in many cultures is associated with a paradise lost and regained. She also speaks of the liberation of the immortal soul from the perishable world. For some peoples, this image was considered as a symbol of triumph over enemies, liberation from slavery.

In some cultures, it is also customary to depict a snake next to a deer or eagle. This image speaks of the opposition of light and darkness, and it is the snake that is responsible for the darkness. The union of a creeping reptile with an eagle or deer indicates cosmic unity, balance. The reptile, which wraps around the female body, testifies to the relationship between the feminine and masculine. A snake curled up in a knot evokes associations with a hidden force that is already ready to break out, overcoming all obstacles in its path.

Alchemists and magicians have never doubted that the snake is a symbol of wisdom. Alchemists in the Middle Ages actively used the image of a snake entwining a pole. This picture symbolizes the subordination of the vital force. The symbol depicting a reptile crawling through a circle indicated alchemical fusion.

Different cultures

Why didn't the symbol (snake) play a special role in the culture of China? Because this reptile is extremely rarely separated from the dragon, the image of which has attracted the Chinese from time immemorial. However, it is known that the creeping reptile in this country was associated with the most negative qualities - cunning, deceit, anger, hatred.

The Celts were much more supportive of reptiles, as evidenced by the surviving epics. They perceived snakes as symbols of rebirth and healing. They were often depicted with a ram's head, horns - in this case, the emblem indicated masculine strength. And the image of the goddess Brigitte, who adorned her hair with a coiled snake, symbolized fertility, reliably protected the human kingdom from dark forces.

The Aztecs traditionally attributed power to snakes, the ability to command the elements. They also associated these symbols with knowledge, wisdom. In the legends of this people, snakes often played the role of mythical ancestors, brave heroes. Reptiles enjoyed great honor in Africa. They were seen as signs of imperial power, symbolized immortality, the return to the world of the living from the world of the dead.

Our days

It is curious that the snake symbol has managed to remain very popular today. It is this image that people from different countries invariably continue to choose, intending to get themselves a spectacular tattoo. The fair sex choose this image, as it is associated with temptation, the forbidden fruit. Men most like the symbols of cobras and other snakes, which can emphasize such qualities as power, the desire to dominate. Those who consider reptiles as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge prefer pictures that depict snakes with bowls.

What is the meaning of a snake tattoo?

Snake tattoos can be ambiguous and even opposite. For example, they mean life or death. To make a drawing that tells exactly what you want to say, you need to choose the correct snake pose, background, movement, place of application, etc. By the way, all cultures also interpret the meaning of the "snake" tattoo differently. Applying such a pattern to your body should be carefully considered and considered from all sides. A tattoo is a display of a person's character.

A snake is a symbolism that simultaneously denotes death and life, wisdom and knowledge, deceit, etc. A reptile that winds around a cup or weaves with another one similar to itself is a symbol of medicine. Their relationship comes from Greek myths, which tell that the god of healing Asclepius noticed how one snake healed another with herbs. This reptile has become a symbol of medicine due to the healing properties of its own poison.

The meaning of the "snake" tattoo is the same if it is worn by a woman, and if it is a man, it acquires a completely different meaning. For the female sex, the strongest sign is the reptile, which wraps around the waist, arm or neck. Since antiquity, it has been believed that the snake is a symbol of fertility.

The criminal world has its own concepts about this pattern on the body. So, the "snake" tattoo on the zone has a symbolic meaning for most thieves in law. It means wisdom. And if a reptile is depicted in a crown with several signs of the zodiac, it is a symbol of the beginning and end. Many convicts made a tattoo that helped them while away their time in prison. A snake among criminals means revenge. If the body depicts the Criminal Code, pierced with a dagger or knife, which wraps around a reptile, - revenge to the prosecutor's office.

Snake tattoos that are intertwined can symbolize a strong marriage. Cobra tattoo - strength and power. The image of this reptile on the human body is a very ambiguous symbol; not everyone can wear it. Such a tattoo is only for people who are strong in all respects.

The image of a snake can be accompanied by some meaningful plot, for example, a snake and an eagle, a reptile and a dragon, a snake in the clouds, a cobra in the desert, reptile in a knot, an evil cobra with flowers, barbed wire with snakes, a cobra on a skull, a snake's eye, a tree with reptile and much more. Anything the artist is able to depict with the help of rich imagination and skill.

The meaning of the "snake" tattoo, which is killed with a dagger, can be interpreted as courage or hatred of lies. Very often women make such drawings on their bodies precisely as symbols of sexuality, temptation and cunning. Indeed, such tattoos can successfully emphasize the smooth curves of the female body.

You need to choose the correct meaning of the "snake" tattoo, because it will accompany you all your life, and it cannot be removed and changed like clothes!

It is a negative and a positive symbol at the same time. This is a reflection of a person who decided to open up and show himself, his character, inner world, temperament in the form of a symbolic image on any part of the body.

Dream interpretation of psychologist K. Jung

Snakes appear in dreams in a variety of forms, confirming the breadth of archetypal meanings carried by the same figurative type. Snakes, of course, can carry a phallic meaning (or even literally associated with a penis), but this is only part of their symbolic potential. Jung believed that snakes can sometimes represent the autonomic nervous system, a very curious observation in light of recent brain research pertaining to the center of the human brain stem, the so-called "reptile brain" (as opposed to the more studied mammalian brain and exclusively human development of the cerebral cortex). brain). Sometimes there are very obvious changes in a person or an object that is haunted. It may appear intimidating at first, but as it approaches, no signs of aggression appear to justify the fear experienced by the dream ego. One man saw in a dream a large monster emerging from the darkness in the direction of the dream ego, which stood in a circle of light from a street lamp. But when the "monster" approached the light, it turned out to be nothing more than a mouse. She may have been a monster in the dark, but she changed as she entered the “light” of consciousness surrounding the dream ego. Complexes associated with the ego (sleep or wakefulness) behave differently than complexes with the ego that are not associated, and therefore unconscious.

Dream interpretation of psychologist D. Loff

Why do Snakes dream of a dreamer, psychological analysis:

Seeing a Snake in a dream is a difficult symbol, because it is interpreted differently in different CULTURES. The interpretation of the dream about snakes has a very wide range: from fear, cooling the blood, to peace and wisdom. The options are determined by the history of literature and folklore of different cultures, as well as personal experience. In real life, fear of snakes is not uncommon. For some people, this fear is so destructive, almost pathological, that even a photograph of a snake seems threatening. For such people, dreams with snakes do not bode well. If there is someone in a dream who holds a snake in his hands, then he, in all likelihood, symbolizes the source of wisdom and order management in the dreamer's world and may in some way represent himself or someone from his acquaintances. In Asian and North American cultures, the snake is a symbol of wisdom. The thought of wisdom stems from the snake's ability to shed its skin and renew itself. If someone dreams of snakes in this light, then this dream symbolizes renewal, problem solving and ordering. In Judeo-Christian cultures, the snake is a symbol of temptation or spiritual opposition to the achievement of a goal. This interpretation follows from the Bible, in which Satan in the guise of a snake seduces Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Sometimes a snake dreamed in such a context hints at a specific person in your real life, with whom you did not have a very smooth relationship. Finally, Freud and classical psychotherapy also offered their own interpretations of this iconic image. In their opinion, the snake symbolizes the phallus, but sometimes it embodies fear of sexual intercourse, aversion to it. It is rather difficult to correctly interpret the snake you dreamed. What emotions prevail in relation to the snake: fear, respect or opposition? How do you feel about snakes in real life: neutral, fearful, or friendly? Did the snake appear when you were alone or with others? How do you feel about those; people who were with you? The answers to these questions should lead to a fruitful interpretation of the dream with a snake.

What does the snake symbolize what does it mean

Elena R.

The snake is an important symbol in almost all cultures in the world. On the one hand, the image of a snake is associated with death (the venomousness of snakes), on the other, it symbolizes rebirth, wisdom and power (shedding the skin, the healing properties of poison).

The serpent in Bazhov's tales [edit | edit source text] Some of the most striking images of the serpent in Russian literature are attributed to the tales of Pavel Petrovich Bazhov. His Snake and snakes, as well as Daiko's snake from the tale "Golden Dykes" - present to the reader of the Tales practically all the classic features of the mythical snake: Wisdom. The Great Snake at one glance recognizes his weakness in Kostka - greed for gold, which leads the young man to death. It is noteworthy that the last parting words of the Poloz to Kostka and Panteley - Do not be greedy. This demonstrates that Poloz is not an initially evil spirit (as in the Bible), but a neutral being. The same is confirmed by the old man Semyonich, who introduces the guys to Poloz. This is the duality of the serpent / snake, as the spirit of the underworld - both wealth and restless dead come from under the earth ... The connection of the snake / serpent with the underworld. On the other hand, in the tale "Golden Hair", the Bashkir hero Ailyp, having married the daughter of Poloz Golden Hair, loses the opportunity to live with her in the world of people (the Poloz father does not give her), and must flee with her from Poloz under the island - in another the underground kingdom, where the Runner has no way - and also become an underground spirit. The Tale also emphasizes the inhuman beauty of the Golden Hair maiden and her magical hair. (It should be noted that another "snake-like" woman, Medusa the Gorgon, also had beautiful hair, until Athena, the Olympic deity, turned them into a serpent and generally disfigured Medusa, making her a monster.)

The ancient Greek god of healing, Asclepius, is depicted with a staff entwined with snakes. One day he was walking, leaning on a staff, and suddenly a snake wrapped around the staff. Frightened, Asclepius killed the snake. But then a second snake appeared, which carried some kind of grass in its mouth. This herb resurrected the slain. Asclepius found this herb and with its help began to raise the dead. The rod of Asclepius entwined with a snake is used as a medical symbol.
Snakes were a very important symbol of the god of healing; later his daughter Hygieia was depicted with a bowl of snakes. They wrapped around the staff of Asclepius and symbolized the duality of the nature of snake venom. They can be killed or brought back to life.

Nowadays, such a phenomenon as tattoos is becoming more and more popular. Men and women of different ages, in pursuit of the trend, adorn their bodies with various characteristic patterns. If earlier tattoos were very primitive and were only the lot of persons in prison, now the technologies for their application have reached a very high level and a tattoo has become an integral attribute of young people.

The procedure is quite inexpensive considering that it is done once and for all and at the same time helps the person to define their individuality. Some tattoos, or rather images, are suitable for both guys and girls, one of them is a snake.

Total value

The most standard meaning: a symbol of death and at the same time a new life, that is, rebirth, for often a snake is depicted when it swallows its tail and forms a ring.

The second meaning is a symbol of anger, meanness, sophistication, the owner can emphasize with the help of a snake tattoo that these qualities are characteristic of him and he does not see anything wrong with it.

Guys

Men stuff themselves with exactly this reptile from a variety of motives (someone associates himself with him, or this is his favorite animal). A snake tattoo for a man means:

  • one of the very first, meaning: mind, peace of mind;
  • the second meaning is fearlessness, courage;
  • the third meaning is strength;
  • good;
  • temptation;
  • power.

To show such a trait as the mind, a snake is drawn in a calm, balanced state, on its face, if you look closely, you can say that she is thinking, she must also be very calm, which, in turn, will show the calm nature of the owner of the tattoo.

The tempter's snake is drawn with an apple clasping the whole body and with a very cunning muzzle, which is a reference to the snake from the Bible, namely to Adam and Eve.

A snake tattoo, the meaning of which is power, very often you can find just such an interpretation, since the image looks more beautiful, the domineering snake is depicted either with a crown clinging to its body or on a battle sword. In general, a man with the help of a reptile can emphasize his character trait or body zone.

Girls

Girls choose exactly the image of a snake with about the same frequency as men, since it describes the girls as best as possible: dexterity, deceit, cunning, devotion in marriage, intelligence and many other qualities. The serpentine dexterity is quite simple for the master to portray; he just needs to show a thin, winding reptile, twisted into a neat spiral.

Agility here is not only the physical quality of the girls' bodies, but also the ability to think outside the box, get out of the most difficult situations, find a way out where it seems that there is none. Devotion in marriage very often makes a couple on various anniversaries, often both partners stuff the reptiles.

The pictures often look like this: two snakes intertwine making a very strong knot (strong, like a couple's relationship), the second option is also a snake that flies around the heart means that the partner conquered the girl's heart. In general, the snake on a woman's body should not be large in order to make the girl as sexy as possible.

Zone value

In the zone, thieves in law become the owners of the reptile on the body. The most philosophical meaning in the zone is an eternal vicious circle, that is, as already mentioned, the beginning and the end. People in the zone often stuff the Criminal Code, which tears apart with a sword or dagger around which a snake coils, such a symbol is made by convicts in order to show their hatred of police officers, prosecutors and subsequent revenge is presented to the persons above.

Revenge is one of the main meanings in the zone, for such qualities as rancor, revenge, anger, the desire to punish the one who made you badly characteristic of prisoners.

A snake entwining various kinds of artifacts can show the rank of a convict and who he was in the zone (for example, a snake in a crown). In the zone, a large number of people do this procedure for themselves, despite the fact that most do not even know the meaning.

In general, now you know what a snake (tattoo) means on the body of a man, woman and in the zone, as well as how to depict a snake, what would it mean and emphasize exactly that character trait - which is inherent in you.
