DIY needlework for home ottoman. Ottoman: types and materials, manufacturing, schemes and patterns, decor

The pouffe has long been a sought-after piece of furniture. Due to its geometrically simple shape, the ottoman takes up a minimum of usable space and at the same time accepts any decor and decoration, organically fitting into any interior. As an interior detail, a pouffe is appropriate both in spacious apartments and in a cramped budget apartment. As an auxiliary (utilitarian) element of furniture, the pouffe is also convenient because it can serve as a storage for small items that need to be kept at hand, and the material for this can be found in almost any trash at hand, see below.

This article tells you how to make an ottoman with your own hands. Prices for simple economy class pouffes are generally not frightening, but the satisfaction from productive independent work cannot be expressed in money. As well as the knowledge that you can still make the right thing yourself, not inferior to the factory one, and now you can try to take on more difficult work. If it is furniture or other carpentry and / or sewing products, then the ottoman is the most suitable initial step in this case. As for the representative interior poufs in the living room or bedroom, the difference in the price of the purchased and the cost of materials for an equivalent home-made one can reach 6 or even 15 times, see for example. video:

Puff or what?

Let us first define the scope of the topic of today's article. Any products belong to one or another type in their class not for the sake of formality and not only in terms of functionality, but also in terms of manufacturing technology; we set ourselves the goal of making our ottoman as simple and inexpensive as possible.

The weakest points of cabinet furniture are the joints of the legs with the supporting base, therefore, interior poufs are made either without legs at all (item 1 in the figure), or with invisible furniture legs-buttons. The utilitarian pouffe for rooms with not always perfectly clean floors is raised on legs, but so that they do not protrude beyond its contour in terms of and are not conspicuous when viewed from a height of human growth, pos. 2. If the legs go beyond the contour of the seat itself, then this is no longer a pouffe, but a bench, pos. 3. If the supporting structure of a product of this kind is also visible, then a soft stool is obtained, pos. 4.

Note: The furniture leg-button is a 1x15 nail with a plastic cap concave at the top with a diameter of 20 mm and a height of 5 mm. Legs-buttons are completed with budget / economy cabinet furniture or, by default, custom-made for self-assembly.

Round or square?

The seat of the ottoman is always soft, or it is all soft frameless, hence the name. A round ottoman is most often a classic interior design, so as not to cling to corners with your feet and while sitting you can turn in all directions. Utility puffs are often made square - so it is much easier to attach both a hinged and a removable cover to the base box.

Note: rectangular ottomans are not made elongated in length, because. from this one of the main advantages of the pouf is lost - compactness. With a seat side length ratio of approx. up to 1:2, the usable area taken away is still equal to the square of the larger side. With further “stretching” of the seat, it increases more slowly, but this again turns out to be a banquette or bench.

Dimensions

Since the pouf is most needed in a cramped room, where you need to spin on it without getting up, its dimensions are smaller than typical for other types of seats. The typical dimensions of an adult pouffe are 350 mm high and the seat diameter or side of its square is 300 mm. The child on the pouffe not only spins, but also fidgets, so the children's ottoman is made with the seat in the same plan. Possibly reduced to D(220...250) or (220...250)x(220...250); the sides are equal in length. However, the child needs less height of the pouf, 180 ... 250 mm, depending on his height, but in a different proportion. If the height of an adult pouffe is approx. 1/5 of the average height of a person, then the children's pouf should be made a little higher, approx. 1/4 - 1/3.5 of the child's height. So it is necessary "for growth", otherwise it will be necessary either to make a new ottoman about once every six months, or anomalies in the formation of the child's musculoskeletal system are possible.

Soft

Soft interior poufs without legs are also called boudoir, although it would be more correct to call them harem ones - the first poufs were brought to Europe by crusader knights. Well-groomed harem sirens walked around their prisons, inaccessible to outsiders, in the lightest negligee or even in what mother gave birth to. In a hot climate without air conditioning, the touch of the most delicate parts of the body on hard surfaces and the edges of cabinet furniture irritated them extremely, and the call of the owner and ruler was supposed to go in a cloudless mood.

The classic boudoir pouffe is a small bag made of selected jute burlap with a wooden circle tightly inserted into it to the bottom, reinforced from the inside with hoops and vertical stripes of whalebone. Then, carefully cleaned and combed horse hair was placed in spiral strands in the base container, also kneading it tightly. After that, the neck of the bag was sewn up and a camel hair pillow was sewn to it. Then a silk, brocade or muslin decorative cover with decorations was pulled over the blank. They didn’t do cotton padding, it quickly soaked with sweat and rotted. Pouffes of this design did not last long, then the then (and present) eastern rulers did not care at all.

Real boudoir

A round soft ottoman, which is better in terms of convenience and much more durable than a classic boudoir, can be made from modern materials according to the scheme in fig. on right. Unfortunately, it is unsuitable for a square pouffe - both the cover and the upholstery will crawl around the corners. The foot base is assembled on PVA: it gives an adhesive layer that retains elasticity for many years. At present, book dealers everywhere use PVA for the restoration of books, and they are the public for what really picky and meticulous.

The technical fabric for the gaskets between the layers of foam rubber must be natural: jute matting or hemp burlap is best; linen canvas is glued and held in place rather poorly, slippery. Synthetics, eg. propylene matting is not suitable - PVA does not hold it well, and silicone and adhesives on organic solvents corrode foam rubber. At the end of gluing the base, it is covered with the same technical fabric; you can simply tightly pull the cylindrical sleeve with a sewn-in bottom. A decorative cape is put on or thrown over the rough cover - you're done.

The main thing in the manufacture of such a pouffe is to choose the right foam rubber (the numbers of the brands in the figure indicate its density in g / cubic dm). A sample of the material in the store is squeezed with fingers until it stops. If they are sharply unclenched, good furniture foam rubber "shoots" instantly, literally without breaking away from their pads. If the foam rubber straightens quickly, without a residual dent, not noticeable to the eye, it is suitable for frame furniture fillers, but not in our case. And the technical foam straightens out quite slowly, and a cavity remains on it for quite a long time (several seconds and even minutes).

Note: furniture foam rubber with a density of up to 60 and even 85 is sometimes found on sale. It will fit even better on the lower layers of the base of a round soft pouffe; the upper ones remain the same, with a density of 25 and 35.

"Semi-soft"

Still, it is not recommended for strong men or portly matrons to sit on a “real boudar” ottoman in a modern version. In fact, eastern fairies in the old days were valued for their pomp of physique (literally, in slave markets), but a whalebone to strengthen the structure is currently not available due to the complete ban on whaling, and big chemistry does not yet offer a full-fledged substitute for it. Therefore, it is better to make an interior pouf for corpulent heavy riders also frameless, but “semi-soft” from a foot of tires of the required height (see above). A single padded stool from a tire from a small car or scooter is more suitable for a child, see below.

The technology for manufacturing an “adult” ottoman from tires is simple:

Hardy from a single tire

The previous model of the pouffe will not last long if you roll it on its side and roll it, get mad at it, poke toys at it - well, those who have acquired miracle heirs know what they are capable of. If so, it is better to make a children's ottoman from one tire with a rough sheathing of increased wear resistance. It is desirable to put it on plastic screw legs for kitchen furniture, see fig. on right.

They are cheap, but terribly strong, and turning them out is beyond the power of any other adult - they are attached at 4 points. An additional advantage in this quality is a large height adjustment limit, which solves the problem of the ergonomics of the ottoman "for growth". The disadvantage is that they miss the best linoleum with a protective layer thinner than 0.6 mm, but literate parents do not lay linoleum on the nursery floor.

A master class in pictures on making a children's ottoman from a tire with a strong hardy rough sheathing with a rope twist is shown in the figure:

The features of the work are as follows:

  • Wrapping only on high-quality hot glue.
  • Sizing during wrapping is carried out in sections of 10-20 cm.
  • Each subsequent section of the rope is laid only after the glue has completely cured under the previous one.
  • The free (running) end of the rope (especially when wrapping the sidewalls) is kept slightly taut, at the bottom left in fig.
  • After squeezing out the next portion of the glue, the rope is pressed tightly, without pressing down with your fingers, otherwise the winding will turn out to be uneven.
  • Having laid the next piece of rope on the glue "sausage", its running end is held without moving until the glue hardens.
  • The finished winding on the workpiece is impregnated with acrylic varnish (bottom right in the figure), regardless of whether a decorative cover will be put on it, because. only on glue the winding will not last long - it will go to be soaked and come off.

Note: for a “real adult” puff of several tires, the described technology, contrary to the assertion of many sources, is of little use - in the gaps between the tiers of the foot of the tires, it is difficult to lay the turns of the rope evenly and close to each other.

"Hard" puffs

An ottoman on a rigid basis is somewhat more difficult to make, and more materials will be needed for it. But “hard” poufs have a decisive advantage for small, cramped and utility rooms - the internal volume of the ottoman can be useful.

The simplest

Still, nothing can be stored in the simplest versions of a utilitarian pouffe - an extremely simple and cheap technology does not allow organizing a receptacle for anything in an ottoman. But such a seat can do for nothing, except for the material of the cape; however, it can also be sewn from cash balances.

The most accessible base material in this case is empty PET bottles with a capacity of 2-2.5 liters, they are just the right height. How to make an ottoman from plastic bottles is shown in the figure:

Base 2-tier; 14 bottles are required for each tier. Holes are cut in the bottoms of the containers of the upper tier, into which the necks of the lower bottles tightly fit. Then the base is turned over, because. the corks of the initially upper, and now the lower bottles will be the legs of the pouffe. The whole package is pulled together with adhesive tape, then foam rubber or synthetic winterizer with a thickness of 30 mm or more is placed on the bottoms of the bottles (20 mm is not enough, the protrusions of the bottoms will be felt as a “fifth point”. The rough lining is made of packaging cardboard also on adhesive tape. There is no point in using more expensive materials on the base - the bottles will wash out from the sides pretty soon, but in the meantime you can make the ottoman more impressive.The only detail that requires more or less high-quality workmanship is a decorative cover (bottom right in the figure), because it will serve on several ottomans.

A more durable simple ottoman is obtained from cardboard tubes - cores from soft roll materials, see next. rice. They are very durable and resistant, so it would be better to make the bottom and the base of the seat out of plywood, and wrap the base of the fiberboard (pos. 6, you can use an inexpensive draft, not painted and not laminated); in this embodiment, rough trim for decorative is not needed.

Note: if the simplest ottoman on a rigid base is needed “forever”, its base is made of 15 mm plywood (see the drawings in the figure on the right). The seat padding is the same as before. options. Rough trim is needed only on the seat; decorative cape freely falling.

Non-traditional option

An excellent basis for a durable simple pouffe is also cable drums and wire reels. They are produced with a core diameter from 1 cm to 2-3 m or more. It is difficult to adapt the core cavity for storage, but you can arrange a hiding place there, which, as a rule, falls out of the attention of burglars; if it comes to a search by the secret services, they, of course, will probe everything with their devices.

However, it makes little sense to search for the base of the seat and the bottom of the ottoman for the cheeks of cable drums of large numbers (on the left in the figure). And not only because making a pouf out of them is quite a serious job for a skilled craftsman. Large cable drums are returnable containers, and the return is usually specified by the manufacturer in the supply contract. Therefore, finding a “new, good” large used cable drum is a matter of chance, and those that have reached their technical wear and tear are likely to be unusable.

It is much easier to buy cheap, firstly, reels for computer cables and electrical wires with cardboard cores (in the center of the figure). In order for the ottoman from such a coil to serve for a long time, a little trick is needed: its plywood cheeks must be cut so that their protrusion beyond the core is 1.5-2 cm. the smaller shoulder of the conditional lever, and the core will quickly begin to wrinkle. If the cheeks are cut off, the focus of pressure from the person sitting will shift to the center of the seat, the core will be pressed by a larger arm of the lever, the force from which will drop at times.

Plastic coils from thin electrical and winding wires (on the right in the figure) do not need modifications to the base for the ottoman - they are already very durable. The disadvantage is that foam rubber and synthetic winterizer do not stick to them, but a round pillow can be used for a soft seat pad; pressing into the stiffening ribs of the cheeks, it will lock quite securely in place.

Note: poufs on a rigid frame (see fig.) are durable, but have all the disadvantages of a pouffe made from the cheeks of cable drums - not cheap high-quality material is required, technologically complex, heavy, the internal cavity is not a usable volume. It is advisable to make an ottoman in this way only if it is complex in terms of shape and forms part of the headset, on the right in Fig.

Ottoman-chest

The ability to adapt the inner cavity of the pouffe for storage in fairly simple ways is its important advantage. An ottoman in the hallway of a small apartment, for a workshop on the balcony; perhaps to the country house or to the garage, consider that it must be made with a pouf-chest - otherwise there may simply not be a suitable place for things that are always necessary on demand (for example, accessories for shoe care).

There are two “critical points” in the design of an ottoman with a receptacle for the necessary little things: the supporting structure and the cover. Let's try to figure out how to make them simpler, from available materials and / or more convenient.

The traditional design of an ottoman-chest is shown on the left in fig. This is essentially a real chest with soft lining. “Chests like chests” are large, so the ottoman-chest can be simplified by making only its supporting frame, bottom and seat base rigid (drawings in the center in the figure). In this design, with the indicated dimensions (an enlarged ottoman for the workshop, in which a power tool is placed - a drill, grinder, electric jigsaw), plywood from 12 mm is needed only under the seat, and the bottom can be made from 3-4 mm plywood.

A hinged lid on a piano hinge, as on the left in the figure, is also generally not needed for an ottoman-chest - anyway, you need to get up to open it. A removable seat cover is enough; dimensions on the right in fig. Cover skirt made of slats 30x30; base made of 12 mm plywood; the rest is furniture foam rubber 45 and upholstery. If the ottoman-chest is interior and will be used by the fair sex, then for their convenience it is worth trying and making a hinged lid with a balancing mechanism, see for example. video clip:

Finally

At the beginning of the article it is said that an ottoman is a good first step towards economical and profitable production of upholstered furniture for sale. How it looks in practice, see the video tutorial:

Video: do-it-yourself simple ottoman

Very often, things that serve us for quite a long time get bored and the following situation arises - it's a pity to throw it away, but there is also no great desire to keep it. So it was with this ottoman, outwardly it was not yet much worn and disfigured, but there was no longer any strength to look at it. Therefore, I had to make a radical decision - to update and embellish. How exactly this happened, our article will tell step by step - how to sew a ottoman with your own hands.

Materials:

fabric of your choice;
construction stapler;
screwdriver and screws;
glue gun;
sewing machine.

Let's take off the top cover. This is what it looks like from below.

We open the lower part of the cover, in most cases it is attached with brackets, so by disconnecting this part of the cover, the brackets can either be removed or simply bent.

Cut off our new upholstery fabric and try it on. If everything fits perfectly, close the corners tightly, upholster the corners with a stapler and sew.

Then we fasten the bottom with a screw, you can of course use the staples again, but it seems to us that it will be easier to disassemble the ottoman again.

After we finished with the top cover, we begin to look for places for attaching the skin at the base of the ottoman. Often they are hidden under the inner upholstery, in order not to tear out the entire inner lining, it is enough to pull on its edge as shown in the photo above.

Now you need to decide how much fabric to use for the base. On each side, it is better to leave a margin of 3-4 cm. Sew on the lower part of the fabric (it is white in the photo).

Now the most painstaking and important process begins - marking the fabric. We wrap the base in fabric and needles, mark the places where the seam will pass in the future. For convenience, you can draw a line with a pencil at the stitching point.

When the fabric is upholstered on both sides, we try everything on the ottoman.

Now you can cut off the excess fabric and iron the junction with an iron, as shown in the photo.

It's time to attach the fabric to the top of the ottoman. First, fold the fabric like this.

Then we wrap it again, but already on the inside of the ottoman.

Pulling the fabric tightly at the base, we begin to nail it with staples, it is best if the staples go next to each other.

Well, that's all, we got such interesting two ottomans, in just 3 hours of work with interruptions. They are quite simple to manufacture, but at the same time they look very modern and interesting.

If you are looking for elegant and high-quality ottomans for your bedroom, then pay attention to the black Moda pouf, or the gray pouf from the Trend series, the white ottoman from the Aida bedroom from CamelGroup looks quite interesting.

Interesting video. Pouffe from plastic bottles.

Sometimes you really want to update the interior, give it a new style, and additional pieces of furniture will become the most suitable assistants in this matter. And if it’s easier to buy a wardrobe or a sofa in a store, then making an ottoman with your own hands is very simple.

Ottomans came to us from the East many centuries ago, and immediately gained popularity. In the recent past, they occupied an important place in urban apartments with small footage, since they simultaneously served as a table, an armchair, and a footstool.

Homemade ottomans have a lot of advantages compared to store-bought ones. You can choose the appropriate shape, size, color and type of material. In addition, in the manufacture of such an ottoman, you can use any means at hand, and such a piece of furniture will cost you almost free.

Soft ottomans: simple and easy from what is at hand

Taking up the manufacture of an ottoman, tune in to the fact that you can handle such a simple and easy job without much worries, and we will help you with practical recommendations and advice. You will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Textile;
  • stuffing material;
  • Paper to apply the pattern.

First, prepare a pattern using the diagram below. Lines B and C on it indicate the places where the paper is folded. It also shows how the template will look in expanded form.

    1. Take the unfolded template and attach it to the fabric. You will need to cut 8 identical pieces of fabric. In order not to spend money on new material, use old clothes.
    2. On each blank, bend an acute corner inward by 5-6 cm and sew so that after assembling the pouffe, an octagonal hole remains in the upper part, into which the stuffing will be placed.
    3. Stitch the blanks from the inside in pairs to each other (during cutting, do not forget to leave a seam allowance of 1 cm over the size of the pattern). Thus, you will get 4 parts from 2 blanks stitched together on one side.
    4. Sew 2 pieces in the same way: these will be the two halves of your pouffe. Sew them together and turn the cover inside out.
    5. Stuff the finished pouf cover with the selected material (it can even be scraps of fabric). Cut another piece to fit the remaining hole, finish the edges and sew by hand.

Tip: It is not necessary to use fabric of the same color for the ottoman. A multi-colored ottoman will enliven the interior, especially in a children's or teenage room.

Such an ottoman is very soft and light, small children will be happy to play with it, and you don't have to worry about their safety.

An even simpler scheme for making an ottoman

There is not always time and desire to mess around with patterns, so we offer you another, very simple option.

  1. Cut out 2 circles from the fabric. Their diameter should be equal to the diameter of the top and bottom of the product. Don't forget to leave seam allowances!
  2. Now cut out 2 rectangular pieces of the same size. Their width will be the height of the pouffe, and their length will be half the circumference of the upper and lower parts.
  3. Sew the rectangular parts together across the width on one side to make a long ribbon. Baste one of the circles to it and stitch along the seam. Do the same with the second round. If the seam is not even or neat enough, you can sheathe it with a decorative border.

In this way, you will quickly and easily make a pouffe cover that is easy to stuff with any suitable material. It remains only to sew a zipper into the unstitched edges of a rectangular tape.

In the same way, you can make a cube-shaped pouffe. The only difference is that the pieces need to be square in shape, and for the sides you will need four pieces of fabric instead of two. Sew the details together, and in order to more clearly indicate the edges of the cube, use a canvas in a contrasting color. A denser fabric will give extra elasticity and help keep the shape.

Please note: a synthetic winterizer and foam rubber are perfect for stuffing such a pouffe. These materials do not deform and keep their shape perfectly.

Make a hole through which you will place the stuffing material from the bottom of the pouffe so that it is invisible. Optionally, you can stitch it tightly after the pouffe is stuffed, or sew in a zipper to be able to change the material if necessary.

We use improvised means: an ottoman made of plastic bottles

This option will allow you to significantly save on stuffing materials. The interior space of the ottoman is filled with plastic bottles. So, you will need to stock up on the following:

  • Plastic bottles of the same shape and volume;
  • Thick cardboard (use cardboard boxes, just make sure that they are not damaged);
  • or synthetic winterizer (you can also use insulation or several layers of dense fabric);
  • Scotch;
  • Glue;
  • Scissors.

Cut out two identical circles of the diameter you need from cardboard - these will be the top and bottom of the ottoman. Set the bottles on the bottom circle so that they fill the entire space and tie them tightly with tape. Cover with the top circle and rewind with tape so that all the parts are evenly and firmly connected to each other.

The base is ready, now we start finishing the ottoman.

  1. From the insulation (foam rubber, synthetic winterizer), cut out two circles and a rectangle. Details should be slightly larger than the base elements, taking into account seam allowances. Connect them together and sew by hand with tight stitches.
  2. Sew a cover for your ottoman according to the same principle as in the second paragraph of this article.
  3. You can add an additional functional element in the form of a strap to the finished product. It will make it easier to carry and will surely appeal to children who will be happy to carry such an ottoman with them as a toy.
  4. If you plan to make an ottoman that you will use yourself, take a denser fabric for the cover and insert a border along the seams. For a children's ottoman, you will need soft material with colorful colors. It is advisable to use a denser layer of foam rubber.

This ottoman is not only easy to perform. By making it yourself, you will save yourself from the need to recycle plastic bottles, and this is already a great reason to take part in the fight for a clean environment!

A new look at old things: we make furniture from clothes

This is not a fairy tale or fantasy, an old sweater can really turn into an original ottoman, not only very comfortable, but also a noticeable element of the interior. Making such a piece of furniture is very simple, because the main condition is an original, bright, beautiful or funny pattern on a sweater that you will use in your work.

So, you will need:

  • A sweater that you will no longer wear, but it is a pity to throw it away;
  • Scissors;
  • Threads and a needle;
  • Felt;
  • Fabric for the cover (lining material is perfect);
  • Styrofoam for stuffing.

From the felt, cut the bottom of the ottoman into a round or square shape. This part will serve as the primary blank. Take the sweater and turn the sleeves inside out, sew the remaining holes with an even seam. Sew the felt blank to the bottom of the sweater to make a bag-case.

Tip: Using plain sweaters with large ribbed knits, such as rhombuses or braids, you will get an amazing classic-vintage ottoman that will look great in any interior. Such knitted patterns are suitable for square and rectangular shapes.

Now you need to prepare a cover made of lining dense fabric for expanded polystyrene. If your primary blank of felt is round, then you will need one piece of fabric of the required size (for example, 50 cm wide and 70 cm long), but if you decide to make a square ottoman, then calculate the required dimensions for four parts.

Sew all the pieces together, and leave a hem at the top for the lace, which will tighten the lace after you fill it with stuffing. The cover should be filled after you place it inside the sweater. Tighten the lace as tight as possible so that the filler does not wake up, straighten the sweater and enjoy your new piece of furniture!

Non-standard solutions in the manufacture of ottomans

Soft ottomans can be of any shape, even spherical. It will be just a great option for, which will become one of your child's favorite toys.

An ottoman ball is easy enough to make yourself, for this you will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Threads;
  • Needle;
  • Scissors;
  • High density fabric, two colors;
  • Graph paper for pattern making;
  • Polyethylene;
  • Silicone filler in the form of balls.

The process of creating an ottoman ball consists of the following steps:

    1. First of all, you need to make a pattern on graph paper, observing the required dimensions. To make it easier, use a round object, such as a large balloon or floor lamp shade. Measure its circumference, and divide the resulting size in half. Divide this number into 5 parts so that 3 middle and 2 extreme are the same size. You will get the diameter of the base in the form of a circle and the width of the stripes that make up the spherical cover of the ottoman.
    2. Transfer the resulting markup to the item you have chosen, starting with the circle part. Draw the next line down the pre-calculated bandwidth.
    3. Take it, cut it along one side and cut off the bottom. Straighten and lay on the marks of the first strip, secure the edges with tape. Transfer a quarter of the strip to polyethylene and cut it out. In the same way, prepare the part of the middle strip. Transfer the pieces to graph paper before cutting.
    4. Now the details of the ottoman need to be cut out of fabric in two colors, leaving 1 cm for a seam allowance. Sew them into strips, leaving one side open, and iron them out.
    5. Attach the first strip to the round piece. The ends of the strip must exactly converge with each other. Stitch them and connect the round base with the strip with a seam, stepping back 1 cm from the edge.
    6. Sew a similar blank for the opposite side of the cover and stitch to the middle strip. At the same time, do not overfill the ends of the middle strip. In the same way, grind the second semicircular blank with a middle stripe and iron the seams.

The cover for the ottoman-ball is ready, you just have to fill it with filler. To make the shape elastic, add small pieces inside. Close the hole with a hidden seam.

We complicate the task: a wooden ottoman with a box for all sorts of little things

If you have skills in working as a carpenter, then you can easily make a fairly simple, but very beautiful and functional ottoman with a wooden drawer on wheels. In such an ottoman you can put toys, magazines, shoes or clothes. For it you will need:

  • laminated board or chipboard sheet for making a circle with a diameter of 30 cm and 4 rectangles 40 X 33 cm;
  • 4 wooden beams with dimensions 4 x 8 x 8 cm;
  • PVA glue;
  • furniture wheels - 4 pcs;
  • metal corners - 4 pcs;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver (screwdriver, drill);
  • foam rubber for stuffing;
  • fabric for the design of the cover;
  • sewing machine.

Take the pre-cut chipboards and connect them to make a box 40 x 40 cm wide and 30 cm high. Additional glue the joints.

Place on the bottom corners of the box. Fix them with self-tapping screws, smearing with glue for a more reliable fastening. Attach furniture wheels to these bars. Install the cover with glue and screws.

The frame of the ottoman is ready, now you need to sew the cover. Take a special furniture fabric, it wears out less. According to the shape of the lid, open the top of the cape, and sew a strip of fabric 10 cm along the contour. Here you can also sew ruffles, drapery, canvas to your liking.

Lay a layer of foam rubber on the cover of the ottoman to ensure softness. Pull the cover over the top. For its implementation, you can use any fabrics and decorative elements.

Video about creating an ottoman with your own hands

As you can see, it is very easy to make an ottoman with your own hands, and the photos that we posted in this article will help you. Share with us in the comments your experience in the manufacture of such pieces of furniture, and we will be happy to discuss with you all the subtleties and features of such work! Comfort to your home!

Simplicity, convenience and elegance - how to make a large soft ottoman with your own hands according to a diagram or drawing

The ottoman in the interior always looks stylish and attractive. This furniture often performs only a decorative role and is used as bright accents.. It is suitable for different rooms: bedrooms, hallways, living rooms, children's rooms.

This piece of furniture can be bought at the store or. The second option is distinguished by a wide flight of fancy, high quality and financial savings.

This piece of furniture comes with or without a frame. Each individual option is unique in its own way. The frame of the products is made of wood or metal.. From above the pouffe is upholstered with foam rubber and textiles.

Frame models are most often installed in hallways, corridors or kitchens. They harmoniously look in classical styles.

Frameless puffs are softer and more comfortable to use. They are soft bags filled with foam rubber, holofiber or other filler. They are placed in bedrooms, living rooms and children's rooms. On such a product it is pleasant to relax after a hard day's work. Their feature is that if you have free time and the necessary materials, you can make a piece of furniture with your own hands in a short time. The shape of the products is round, triangular, in the form of a pear.

According to the classification, puffs are also divided into soft and hard. Soft, in turn, come with:

  • With an open frame. They resemble a small chair with a soft seat. Such models are budgetary, and they are easy to make on your own. Their frame can be wood or metal.
  • With closed frame. They look like big pillows. Their frame is upholstered with textiles on all sides. They can be equipped with legs or furniture wheels. The shape of the products is most often round or square.

Rigid models are made of wood and decorated with decorative trim.. They are used not only as a seat, but also as a coffee table.

According to the varieties of ottomans are divided into:

Reference: in classic interiors, wood is used to make the frame, in modern ones - metal.

Round or square?

The shapes of pouffes differ depending on its purpose.. They are:

But the most popular and popular are round and square products:

  • Square pouffe will harmoniously fit into any interior of the hallway, living room, bedroom. This furniture is divided into frame and frameless. They will not only decorate the room, but also make it as comfortable and convenient as possible to use. Such furniture items are used as an extra seat or as a footstool. If you make a product with a hinged lid, you get additional storage space for personal items.
  • Round pouffe looks beautiful in bedrooms, living rooms and children's rooms. They have a soft base and interesting designs. Rounded shapes smooth out the angularity of the interior and visually increase the space.

Design features

By design features, poufs are transformers. That is, with the help of special mechanisms, they turn into:

Of what?

With your own hands, a beautiful and practical ottoman can be made from different materials.:

As for upholstery materials, they are selected according to the overall interior of the premises. Velor and velvet are considered the most sought after fabrics.. They are pleasant to the touch and are able to bring a special charm and atmosphere of warmth into the room. But this fabric is quite difficult to care for.

Advice: silk and jacquard are best suited to the interior of the bedroom or living room. They have a noble appearance.

Leather is suitable for classic and modern design. This material is unpretentious in care and is wear-resistant.

Style and design

To give the room an original and exclusive appearance, the pouffe should be made bright and colorful. For children's rooms, saturated colors of blue, pink, turquoise are chosen.

Of course, it must be in harmony with the overall interior. You can also decorate a piece of furniture with beads, rhinestones or embroidery.

Under classical motifs, such as baroque or rococo, it is recommended to attach curved or carved legs to the product. Their upholstery is made of velvet, velor or leather in discreet neutral tones.

For the high-tech style, a metal frame is taken as the basis, the seat is made of artificial leather. Their legs are arched and painted in chrome.

The direction of minimalism requires a minimum of decor and ornaments.

Important: light products visually increase the space. But for hallways, this option is not entirely appropriate. Since when in contact with dirty shoes and clothes, they will get dirty.

Standard size

Puff sizes can vary. With self-production, the owner himself comes up with the dimensions that suit him. BUT in furniture stores, the dimensions of products with backs are considered standard:

  • height - 65 cm;
  • depth 65 cm;
  • width 65 cm.

If the pouffe is without a back, its standard dimensions are:

  • height - 65 cm;
  • width - 64 cm.

  • sintepon.

Important: Make sure the filler is eco-friendly, safe and durable.

Scheme, drawing, pattern

Before sewing a soft pouffe, it is necessary to make a drawing and a pattern in advance. The drawing indicates the dimensions of each individual part, the materials of sewing and filler. The pattern is drawn on wide paper. It consists of:

  • four side parts;
  • two circles.

All paper parts are cut along the contour and transferred to the fabric.

Making tools

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is worth noting that making a pouffe with your own hands is quite easy and simple. For this, different materials, various techniques, methods are used. Some prefer frame products with a hard seat, others like frameless models filled with foam rubber. Which option to choose, each person decides for himself. The main thing is that the manufactured pouffe should please the owners with practicality, functionality and aesthetic appearance.

An ottoman on wheels is a pretty handy thing, especially if it has a lid, under which something else can be put away. After going shopping and even studying Avito, I realized that there was no suitable pouf anywhere. In stores, either there are no wheels, or the colors are not the same, but on Avito the price tags are almost higher than the store ones, and there are a lot of second-hand frank ones. Therefore, it naturally emerged that you need to do the pouf yourself. A rather easy and quick creation process loomed in my head, but in reality it turned out not quite so, mainly due to inexperience. The creation process is described below.

First you need to decide on the size. In terms of height, taking into account the volumetric cover and wheels, the ottoman should not be higher than a standard chair, or it may be lower (depending on what purpose). To understand what sizes are needed, the easiest way is to take a regular chair on which you are comfortable and measure it. Our pouffe turned out to be 42x42 cm and 55 cm in height. Such a height is inconvenient and should be 45-50 cm, but it just so happened, because I invented the production technology right during the process of creating the pouffe. To make your pouf lower, then parts 2 and 3 (see drawing) will not be 380, but 330 mm high.

We will make a pouffe from chipboard and upholster it with dermantine with foam rubber filler. Below is a drawing. On it, the numbers 6 and 7 indicate the holes for confirmation 7x50 at the end of the part and on the plane, respectively. Such designations are accepted in the chipboard sawing office in order to indicate them schematically on the drawings. True, they require a distance of a multiple of 32 mm between the holes, but you can put up with this. How to make holes yourself.

Assembly

Finally, the parts are made, we begin the assembly. Do not forget to set the correct moment on the screwdriver, otherwise it will drive the confirmation too deep (

Stuffing

We agreed that the pouffe would be filled with foam rubber (polyurethane foam). To do this, we need a sheet of foam rubber (usually sheets are 2x1 meter) with a density of EL3040 and a thickness of 20 mm. The walls of the pouffe will be stuffed in one layer, and the lid will be voluminous and filled with three layers glued together. It is advisable, of course, to use a solid one with a thickness of 40-60 mm, but in order to save ...

You can mark the foam rubber or cut it directly on the workpiece, placing something under the foam rubber so as not to cut the floor.

Having cut out the foam rubber for two opposite walls (calculated size 38x39.6), we glue them to the box using PVA or glue for ceiling plinths. Here it is best to apply glue and then poke around with foam rubber on the chipboard so that the glue spreads over the surface as best as possible and does not freeze with sausages.

Having glued two sides, cut out the other two (estimated size 42x39.6), so that the foam rubber covers not only the box, but also the ends of the foam rubber on perpendicular walls. It will be clearer if you look at the photo.

Cut out the foam for the lid. Everything is simple here - cut out 3 pieces exactly 38x38 or use the blank as a template and glue them one on top of the other to the lid. Then you need to cut out the sidewalls, which, taking into account the thickness of the chipboard (16 mm) and three layers of foam rubber 20 mm each, will turn out to be 38x7.6 cm. The other two sidewalls will turn out to be 42x7.6 cm.

cover upholstery

The upholstery will consist of three pieces: 1 for the cover 67x67 cm, and two 86x52 cm for the base.

Let's start with the lid. It is the opening of the lid that is shown on the left. I'll try to explain:
42 is the width of the pouffe, taking into account 2 cm of foam rubber on both sides;
7.5 cm are small flaps 1 cm wide for stitching and forming the volume of the lid

To simplify the bending of the corners, we cut off one of the sides at an angle and bend the second obliquely.

In general, for this case, I specifically bought a stapler I had long wanted and cheap staples for it No. 53 12 mm high. Either because of the cheapness (it seems 20-30 rubles), or because of the excessive height, but they had to be beaten with a hammer. They did not want to fit in completely, like those that were included in the kit by 8 mm. It was possible to pull it correctly with carnations, but it’s still more convenient with a stapler, even taking into account finishing with a hammer))

Well, the lid is ready. You should probably pull as hard as you can. In my case, after sitting, creases remain on this cover. But it is quite difficult to calculate the tension, it seems that you are pulling too hard all the time. This seems to come with experience.

base upholstery

Let's take care of the upholstery of the base. Dimensions 86x52 consist of: 86 \u003d 2 sides of 42 cm each, plus 1 centimeter for two seams and 52 \u003d 39.5 (box height, taking into account the bottom thickness) + 2 (foam rubber on top) + 1.5 (chipboard thickness) + 3.5 (for hem) + 2 (foam rubber thickness from below) + 3.5 (for hem). Probably, I didn’t explain it clearly, but that’s how these dimensions were set))

We sew two pieces along the short side on both sides and put the resulting cylinder through the top onto the base, bending it inward from above and below. Please note that on top the upholstery is bent directly onto the ends of the chipboard on three sides, except for one, where the hinges are attached. That's exactly (like where the loops are) I wanted to do initially, but then I decided to simplify the process, because. staples enter the end of the chipboard much easier. Thus, the hem turned out to be quite large that it had to be bent inward. I advise you to calculate in advance how you will do this so that you do not waste extra material.

loops

I took the usual loops, although you can use special lifts. It is easier to fasten first to the lid, then to the base, but it is more difficult to attach them in the right place on the lid, so that later the holes on the hinges fall into the plane of the base. I first fixed it on the base, but I had to suffer so that after attaching the hinges to the lid, it would stand evenly in the closed position.

wheels

I bought the simplest wheels for 13 rubles with a mounting platform. I attached the first wheel by placing the platform parallel to the sides of the pouffe, but I decided to place the rest at 45 degrees. I found it more reliable

Well, this is how he turned out. It was also possible to make a limiter for opening and a handle from a piece of upholstery, but this threatened with additional tangible costs for a seamstress and I decided that we would do it ourselves over time))

Price

One of the reasons for the appearance of a do-it-yourself pouffe was the price. I must say that the savings turned out to be scanty. But I just like doing things myself, it's my hobby, if you like. So:
820 - chipboard with an additive;
315 - foam rubber 2x1;
660 - leatherette 138x120 cm;
300 - seamstress services;
45 - loops;
52 - wheels;
38 - euro screws;
2230 - Total.
However, here it was possible to save money firstly on chipboard, because. I used laminated, but it was possible to cut out from any. Secondly, if you have a typewriter, then another 300 rubles of savings. I also took good quality dermantin at 550 per line, there was an option to take 450 and even 350

P.S. I got a lot of useful information from
