Do-it-yourself renovation of an old kitchen set. How to upgrade a kitchen cabinet? Conclusions and prices

Kitchen furniture is designed for a certain period of use. Moreover, it usually loses its appearance earlier than functionality.

A full-fledged restoration of a headset, as a rule, is an expensive undertaking, but you can update furniture with a self-adhesive film at any time.

Self-adhesive film: just the facts

The main advantage of this solution is its affordable price. A family with the most modest budget can afford to update a kitchen or bathroom in this way. The second advantage is the ability to glue the film to literally any surface - tiles, plastic panels, chipboard and so on.

The material is produced in the most varied and at different prices. So before purchasing a film for furniture restoration, you should familiarize yourself with the classification.

In the photo - a kitchen cabinet, finished with PVC film.

Manufacturing material

In fact, the material includes several components, however, the film for cabinets or walls is distinguished by the material of the main composition. This could be:

  • polyvinyl chloride- vinyl film is one of the most popular options, since it is the most affordable and at the same time relatively durable;
  • polyester- more often has a structure that mimics the fabric. With its help, you can "drag" the furniture;
  • propylene- the most durable and wear-resistant material.

Structural classification

Self-adhesive films for can have a slightly different structure.

  • Single layer- the film material is made from various organic substances with the addition of plasticizers, pigments and stabilizers. On its back is glue, covered with paper on top. To update the facade with its help, it is enough to peel off the paper and attach the film with the adhesive side to the surface.
  • Double layer- in this case, the base and the cover are made separately. The base is paper or cloth, and the cover is polyvinyl chloride resin with various additional components. The cover is made in several different ways, which provide a varying degree of resistance to certain factors, as well as a decorative appearance of the material for updating old cabinets. The price of this material is higher than that of the previous type.

Surface types

They can be very different - matte, imitating wood (for example, like MDF) or made of wood. During restoration, there is not always a desire to preserve the existing appearance. Self-adhesive tape solves this problem. Moreover, almost all options are the same in price.

There are some interesting solutions.

The following video demonstrates different types of self-adhesive tape.

Design solutions

Decorative self-adhesive films are available in so many solutions that it is simply impossible to describe them. The most common catalog contains at least 1000 samples. It is quite conditionally possible to divide the appearance of the material into 2 large groups.

  1. Standard- that is, the most common and most common when decorating a kitchen or bathroom:
  • plain- more than a popular option for modern kitchens;
  • film with wood pattern- perfect for updating a MDF headset;
  • with a pattern under a stone- a very effective solution, especially for the bathroom;
  • ceramic tile- imitation tiles are suitable for any non-residential premises;
  • canvas- a rare but effective option;
  • the cloth- chintz, silk, tapestry and so on. The "inserts" from the film in combination with the MDF frame look very interesting;
  • Children's drawings- a cute and original decorative touch.

2. Decorative material special purpose is much less common, since it is far from suitable for every interior, and its price is higher:

How to renovate furniture with foil?

The replacement technology is very simple: in fact, you just need to free the film from the paper and apply it to either the cabinet of the floor-standing or wall-mounted cabinet. In fact, there are also some nuances here that should be taken into account.

Most often, vinyl film is used to update kitchen cabinets, since it is not only not afraid of moisture, but also does not fade in the sun, and this is important for the kitchen. It is very simple to work with it, it is possible from chipboard, MDF, wood and even. It should be borne in mind that the self-adhesive film will mask spots or scuffs on the facade, but it cannot hide irregularities or deep scratches.

  1. The first stage of cabinet restoration is the removal of irregularities. For this, the facades are removed, the sashes and the frame are inspected, and all detected irregularities are putty and sanded. If pasting is done or with veneer, which is already moving away in places, then the old finish must be completely removed.
  2. Then they measure the parameters of all the parts that need to be pasted over. When calculating, it is worth leaving a margin of 1 cm around the perimeter. If vinyl is inadvertently applied at the wrong angle, then the margin will fix the problem. Excess decorative film is simply cut off with a breadboard knife.
  3. The film is sized and cut. As a rule, there is a centimeter grid on the back of the material, which makes it easier to mark.
  4. When cutting, it must be borne in mind that material with a pattern or image must be cut from the front side so that you can combine the fragments later. The decorative film that reproduces the tiles must be cut at the seams.
  5. The surfaces to be glued are degreased so that the film does not come off later. For MDF or chipboard, a regular glass cleaner is fine. Wet metal or glass surfaces with soapy water, otherwise the film will not adhere.
  6. After the sash has dried, the material is glued. For this, a layer of protective paper - about 5 cm - is removed from the upper edge of the fragment and glued to the edge of the facade. Then release the next 5-10 cm and re-stick. In this case, hold the film with one hand, and smooth the pasted film with a soft towel with the other.
  7. The fully adhered material is smoothed again with a soft cloth from the middle to the edges. If air bubbles appear, you can pierce them with a needle. If necessary, you can iron the cabinet sash with an iron through a layer of fabric.

When finishing with facing, that is, pasting the end, it is necessary to use a building hair dryer. When cutting, the tolerance on the ends is taken into account and the workpiece is cut at the corners. First, the material is laid on the surface, and then glued to the ends.

The following videos demonstrate the renovation of a MDF kitchen set with a decorative film.

Film wrapping is the easiest and most affordable way to update kitchen furniture. The durability of this solution, of course, is lower than when facing with acrylic panels, but it is much more varied and cheaper.

The kitchen is a gathering place for the whole family, where it is always warm and cozy, you can drink tea together in the evening, watch your favorite video, listen to music.

A moment comes when the hostess, looking around, looking at the walls and ceiling of the kitchen, says: "Isn't it time for us to make repairs, refresh the ceiling painting, change the wallpaper, and the style of decoration?"

Thirst for change

It is clear that over time, the interior design of the kitchen, which seemed original before, may get bored. I would like to update it at no extra cost by changing the wallpaper, refreshing the ceiling. But the headset itself was chosen in the same style as the decoration of the kitchen. How to be?

It's very simple! You can change the design not only of the general decoration in the kitchen, but also of the headset itself. Today we will give some tips on how to update an old kitchen set with your own hands.

These tips will come in handy not only for major repairs, but also if the facades of your headset have faded from time to time, scratches and chips have appeared on the finish.

Variants

You can give a new look to a kitchen set in different ways. At the same time, there is no need to spend large sums of money or hire professionals to work. You can do everything yourself, if, of course, you try.

There are more difficult options, but there are easier ones. Choose according to your taste and consider your possibilities.

Replacement of facades

The easiest option, but also the most expensive, is to replace old kitchen facades with new ones. Agree that the price of the facades themselves is much cheaper than the price of a complete kitchen set, and the result will be the same as if you completely replaced the kitchen.

The market for kitchen facades is saturated with products from various factories; you can always choose ready-made or order facades that suit you.

The procedure for replacing facades with your own hands:

  1. remove the old doors by unscrewing the screws from the hinges;
  2. remove the facades from the drawers by carefully unscrewing the screws;
  3. fix the new facades in place of the old ones.

Advice. If you bought untreated facades, then they must be processed before being hinged in place. Prime them thoroughly, sand with a sandpaper after drying, and then paint with varnish or paint at least 2 times.
Process both sides. And only after that you can start hanging them in place.

Updating facades

If you decide to restore the old facades, give them a new life, then we will deal with their renewal.

General rules for restoration

Before you start updating the facades, you need to prepare them.

The preparatory process is the same for different restoration methods and is as follows:

  1. we mark all the elements that we will restore;
  2. remove them from their hinges by unscrewing the screws;
  3. from each element we unscrew the handles and counterparts of the hinges;
  4. wash all surfaces with warm soapy water:
  5. wipe dry.

Painting

The process of painting the facades prepared according to the general rules of restoration is carried out in the following order:

  1. we clean all surfaces with fine sandpaper;
  2. remove dust with a damp cloth;
  3. wipe with a cloth or sponge dipped in white spirit;
  4. we paint all panels, grooves, recesses, and then the entire surface;
  5. we paint in several layers, usually 3 layers are enough;
  6. after drying, we fasten the handles (old cleaned or new) and the mating parts of the hinges;

Pasting with film

Self-adhesive films make it possible to let your imagination run wild when choosing to decorate kitchen facades, what colors are not in their collections.

When deciding how to update a kitchen set with your own hands, keep in mind that with the help of these films the process will be quite simple, and the result will depend on your efforts and imagination when choosing a film.

The palette of colors and textures of films is wide:

  1. under a tree, about 70 species, from ordinary oak to exotic species;
  2. monochromatic, bright colors, a wide palette of shades;
  3. imitation of facing materials such as marble, granite, ceramics;
  4. films with drawings and photographs, with children's and plant patterns.

This material is resistant to high temperatures and waterproof, making it ideal for use in the kitchen.

So, let's consider the question of how to update a kitchen set by decorating surfaces with self-adhesive film.

For work we need:

  1. the film that we have chosen;
  2. sharp scissors;
  3. ruler;
  4. breadboard knife;
  5. scraper.

Instructions for pasting facades with foil:

  1. we carry out all the actions that are described in the chapter "General rules of restoration" of this article;
  2. we start cutting the film, measuring the pasting surface and transferring the dimensions to the reverse side of the film, where a convenient centimeter grid is applied;
  3. we put the cut fragment face up on the facade, check if it was cut out exactly;
  4. carefully lift the film from one edge and peel off the backing from the edge, freeing the adhesive surface;
  5. glue the edge and begin to gradually remove the paper from the bottom, immediately leveling the film from the center to the edges, you can level it with your hand or with a rag, rubber spatula or sponge, which will be better;
  6. when bubbles form, pierce them with a needle or cut them with a cutter and gently level them;
  7. after pasting, we fasten the handles and hinges;
  8. we install the facades in place.

Advice. If the canvas is glued crookedly or inaccurately, peel it off immediately and replace it with a new one. If you don't do this right away, then it will be very difficult to scrape off the film from the facade.

Decoupage of kitchen furniture

Consider how you can update the kitchen set by applying the decorating technique that is fashionable today - decoupage.

We prepare our doors according to the variant according to which we prepare them for painting.

Let's prepare for work:

  1. two types of paint combined, but contrasting tones;
  2. ruler;
  3. pencil;
  4. plywood 4 mm thick;
  5. glue;
  6. napkins with decorative patterns.

To obtain the result, as in the photo, we perform the following actions:

  1. we paint the door in one color (in our case, it is red);
  2. we prepare the plywood, cut out a sheet from it, which will be in the center of the door, we select the proportions ourselves, about two thirds of the length of the door in height and one third in width;
  3. paint a sheet of plywood with red paint;
  4. after the paint has dried on the plywood, paint it with a lighter paint, getting the effect of cracks;
  5. from a napkin we cut out an image of a flower or another that you like;
  6. glue the cut image on the plywood;
  7. glue the plywood on the door;
  8. now we cover the door along with the plywood and the pattern with furniture varnish a couple of times;
  9. we fasten the fittings and put the door in place.

In this finish, options are possible:

  1. you can not use plywood, but simply draw a yellow rectangle on the door itself and decorate it with a flower image;
  2. you can use decorative moldings - frames to highlight a colored rectangle;
  3. you can choose the pictures so that they go beyond the yellow rectangle, for example, there are flowers on it, and the leaves go out onto the red field.

There can be a lot of options. So there is an open field for creative imagination.

Advice. Using the decoupage method, you can also update the stools by decorating them in the same style with the cabinet doors,

Summary

As you can see, the restoration of kitchen furniture is not so difficult. The main thing is to have the desire to work hard with your own hands, embodying original solutions and fantasies.

To freshen and update the kitchen beyond recognition, you do not have to buy a new set and re-glue the wallpaper. Today, there are many budget-friendly ways to do a facelift in just an hour. Self-adhesive film is one of the most affordable and popular ways to completely transform the look of furniture and other surfaces in the kitchen, costing little blood - without wasting time and serious financial investments.

Pros of using self-adhesive tape

What is self-adhesive film? It is a flexible material that is usually sold in rolls. On the back of the film there is a thin, uniform layer of adhesive protected with wax paper. Before gluing the film, it must be carefully removed, after which the material is ready to be applied to the prepared surface.

The advantages of using film for the kitchen leave no doubt:

  • this is the most economical type of finishing material that can be changed as often as you like without prejudice to the family budget;
  • the time that needs to be spent on gluing the film is minimal;
  • special means are also not required - in some cases, you may need basic surface preparation with a primer;
  • with the help of the film, you can reliably protect surfaces from various negative influences - moisture, high temperatures, detergents and cleaning agents, grease, etc.;
  • a film with a pattern for the kitchen can completely change, update and restore an old and unpresentable kitchen set.

Why is self-adhesive film for the kitchen good? Due to the high temperature and humidity, furniture and other surfaces, especially near the work area, are subject to rapid wear.

This is especially true for furniture made of chipboard and other artificial materials. And natural solid wood is also vulnerable to external influences.

As for plastic, it is the least susceptible to thermal damage, but it can still deteriorate with other negative factors. By protecting the surface of the furniture with a self-adhesive film, you can significantly extend the life of the headset.

How to use the material?

Where should self-adhesive be used in the kitchen? In the working area - near the hob, sink and cutting board, it is best to stick a film made of a special heat and moisture resistant polymer (ask the seller about this type of material).

With the help of such a film, you can avoid such troubles as peeling veneer on laminated chipboard furniture, swelling and cracking of the surface of the facades and the body.

Especially if one of the kitchen modules is located directly above the hob, then it is simply necessary to protect it with a film: this way you will not have to wipe the furniture from grease drops every time, but simply replace the film with a new one over time.

Do not think that covering the kitchen with plastic is the choice of poor people with no taste. If, for example, you want to protect your furniture, but do not want to change its appearance, you can use transparent self-adhesive film. Correctly applying it to the surface of the furniture, you will make it almost invisible, and at the same time significantly extend the life of the headset.

There are also decorative self-adhesive films for kitchens, with which you can change the design of the room beyond recognition. It is not for nothing that buyers are in great demand for a film that imitates the texture of natural wood: with the help of such a material, you can update and even completely restore an old, worn out or simply outdated set.

It is enough just to stick the film on the facades to hide any defects: scratches, cracks, chips on the surface of wood or veneer, plastic or acrylic. You can do this even without visible defects, just wanting to update the kitchen design.

For example, if you are bored with your old wood headset, you can turn it from classic to modern by choosing a bright (light green, yellow, purple) film with a glossy effect. And vice versa: if you want to get a quieter design, you can stick a film over the acrylic facade that imitates wood in light or muted shades.

Decor with self-adhesive film

Patterned, patterned, or printed adhesive wrap is another good way to decorate your kitchen without putting a strain on your budget. In stores, you can find hundreds and thousands of types of drawings, textures and patterns on the film: floral, plant, geometric, animals.

The following types of film are popular:

  • with painted tiles or mosaics - a good way to "trick" guests by gluing an apron near the working area;
  • with flowers and plants - a good option to refresh your kitchen renovation with the onset of a new warm season;
  • with various shapes - triangles, circles, squares - an excellent choice for lovers of abstraction in kitchen design, which is suitable for modern interiors.

You can also find various macro photographs on film: photos of fruits, flowers, animals, various urban images (Paris, New York, London) and others.

You need to be careful with them so that instead of decorating the kitchen you do not make it flashy tasteless. It is advisable to choose a good quality dense film, because cheap material with a thickness of a millimeter will make the kitchen design look cheap.

Before renovating a kitchen with self-adhesive tape, it is advisable to carefully consider what kind of design you want to see. It is important that the color and texture of the film matches other surfaces and objects.

Be careful with materials that have a variety of optical effects: holographic, pearlescent, sequins, rhinestones, etc. They look attractive only in the catalog, but in practice they can make furniture cheap and tasteless.

How to properly stick the film?

It is advisable to think in advance where you want to update the surfaces. In addition to the furniture film, there is also a wall film that can be used to make an apron or update the dining area in the kitchen. As for the countertop, it is undesirable to stick a film on it, because constant contact with moisture and detergents will quickly render it unusable.

Before you glue the surfaces (furniture, walls) with foil, you need to properly prepare it:

  • clean from dirt, especially from fat (with furniture, you need to be careful when using special degreasers - it is better to do with simple non-abrasive detergents);
  • dry thoroughly;
  • if the surface of the wall is uneven or rough, it is advisable to apply a wall primer to it and wait until it dries.

Do not use a film that is too thin in places with obvious defects (cracks, depressions), because after applying the film, they will be visible through its surface. To mask imperfections, choose a thicker film.

The film is applied very simply: you need to peel off the protective layer on the back of the material 5 cm wide and attach the film to the edge of the working surface. Proceed carefully and without haste, otherwise the material will stick crookedly.

Next, carefully peel off the remaining protective layer of paper and carefully stick the film on the surface of the facade or wall. Use a towel or soft cloth to smooth and lightly press to remove air.

If air bubbles have formed on the surface of the film after gluing, they can be pierced with a needle and smoothed with a towel. If you use a film with a pattern, then if necessary, cut it into fragments, guide it with scissors or a knife along the line of the seams so as not to spoil the appearance of the material.

So, let's update the kitchen! This room is one of the most used in any apartment or house. We are sure that there are also a couple of things in your kitchen that can be improved or refreshed.

1. How to update the kitchen: replace the doors

Fitting new doors to kitchen cabinets is an economical alternative to a complete furniture replacement. The appearance of the kitchen will change beyond recognition if you change their color or texture. However, there is an important point here, especially for "older" kitchens: when hanging new doors, fasteners often have to be changed, and this can weaken the kitchen structure, lead to sagging and shorten the life of the entire set.

2. Paint the facades

This method will help to achieve the same strong effect as when replacing the doors, and there are fewer risks. Arm yourself with your favorite paint and renew old doors. A spray can do a better job than a brush: there will be fewer streaks, and it is easier to achieve an even coverage. If you want to use the liquid paint left over from the last repair, it is better to apply it with a sponge, dabbing. And don't forget to apply a couple of coats of varnish on top.

3. Install new handles

It's amazing what role such a small detail like a handle plays in the perception of an entire kitchen. Despite the fact that replacing them is simple and inexpensive. If you are repainting the cabinets at the same time, you can patch up and paint the old holes from the handles, then the choice of new parts will not be limited by anything. If you only change pens, you will have to find a similar format.

4. Cheat with the countertop

If the surface of your countertop is completely worn out or just already annoys you, you can replace it. However, if it is glued to the cabinets, it may be difficult for you to disguise the damage from dismantling later. There is a simpler option and, if we are talking about a countertop made of natural materials, it is cheaper: invite a specialist home who will mount a thin layer of wood veneer or stone on top of your countertop.

5. Upgrade the light

Buying new lamps or at least changing the lampshade of a pendant lamp will give you a boost of novelty. Think of the original suspensions, they look more elegant than just a dangling cord.

If you only have one common light source in your kitchen, you're guaranteed to add comfort and ambiance to the room by hanging a lamp over the work surface and a pair of sconces in the table area. If you do not want to invite an electrician to mount the fixtures on the wall, those that simply plug into the socket will do as well.

6. Switch to energy-efficient lighting

It is not for nothing that they say so much - they are more expensive than other bulbs (although the price decreases over time), but at the same time they work for a very long time, are extremely energy efficient and you cannot get burned about them. Replacing light bulbs is arguably the easiest change you can make to your kitchen, but brighter light will have a positive effect on the look and feel of the space, and saving energy on your budget. LEDs are sold with a wide variety of base types, so built-in halogens can be easily replaced.

7. Paint the ceiling

Paint or re-whitewash the ceiling. Even if this is the only thing you do to update the kitchen, you will be surprised how much brighter and brighter the surroundings will become. Kitchen ceilings are heavily loaded with steam, smoke, dust and grease splashes, and you may not notice it until you compare before and after.

8. Upgrade the kitchen apron

If the wall covering behind the kitchen countertop is outdated or, moreover, was not initially adapted to everyday kitchen life, the time has come to make a beautiful and practical kitchen apron. There are many interesting ideas in our articles:

  • Rating of materials for a kitchen apron: all the advantages and disadvantages

Fast and inexpensive solution: buy back or, if you're lucky, pick up for free the remnants of different tiles in warehouses or from friends who have recently completed repairs. Combine tiles of different sizes, colors and textures to create a unique and vibrant backsplash that will be a real highlight of your kitchen. If you want a mosaic apron, then broken tiles are also suitable for these purposes. By the way, if the condition of the old tile is still normal, you can also simply paint it from a spray can and varnish it.

9. Change the floor covering

Are the floors in need of renovation? Budgetary, this problem can be solved by working on your own and choosing coatings that feel good to be laid on top of the old floor (if it is not too crooked). Vinyl tiles, cork, laminate or linoleum are easy enough to install for you to tackle on your own with a little extra work.

10. Get rid of the trash

No matter what changes you make to your kitchen, a mess and unnecessary visual "garbage" can ruin everything. Perhaps not all accessories on kitchen shelves and fridge magnets are so dear to you. In the vacant space, you can put several new carefully selected items: vases or bowls, vintage bottles or commemorative photographs. Or just leave more free space.

If something in the old furniture is broken or it has lost its appearance, this does not mean that it is necessary to change it. Furniture can be restored, and any furniture, including kitchen furniture. To begin with, it is important to determine what exactly broke, whether it is possible to fix it, whether the repair will be temporary or the furniture can still serve for a long time. In the event that the headset is made of high-quality material or only the correction of cosmetic defects is required, repairing kitchen furniture with your own hands justifies itself. This is especially true for wooden furniture, it can be repaired several times. But more affordable furniture made of MDF and chipboard is also amenable to repair, when, for example, you need to improve the appearance of facades.

Redecoration of kitchen furniture

Usually, the kitchen loses its appearance the fastest, and most of all it is noticeable on the facades. If these are MDF facades, then in some places the film is lagging (the ends of the facades are vulnerable spots), scratches appear, stains from various contaminants, such as grease, appear, the coating changes color and becomes inhomogeneous in tone.

Restoration of minor damages

Minor damages include chips, scratches, abrasions.

  1. Chips are removed with wax. A pre-aligned chip along the edges is poured with molten wax, polished, and then painted over with special felt-tip pens, choosing colors. Then fix it with a finishing coat of varnish.
  2. Rub the scuffs with a soft microfiber cloth, to which the dye from a felt-tip pen has been applied.
  3. Scratches are polished with furniture wax.
  4. If some parts have dispersed, the edges are coated with PVA glue and pressed against each other with clamps.

It happens that the edge of the headset countertop or kitchen table comes off. It can be replaced with a new one that matches the color. This will require the edge itself, scissors, a construction knife, an iron.

  1. The edge is cut into pieces, according to the dimensions of the table top, with small allowances. First, they make blanks for the long sides, then for the short ones.
  2. Then the iron is adjusted so that the edge does not overheat or swell.
  3. The edge is evenly applied to the end. For convenience, you can put the table top upside down.
  4. With uniform, unhurried movements, they drive along the edge with an iron, as a result of which the glue melts, and the edge is glued to the end.
  5. While the glue has not cooled down, it is necessary to press the edge against the countertop, ironing with pressure along the edge with a piece of felt or a rag.
  6. The excess edge at the corners is trimmed with scissors, trimmed with a knife.
  7. The excess edge from above and below, if it does not fit in width, is cut off with a knife, gradually, towards the table top. And then they pass again in one motion, applying the blade at an angle of about 45 degrees to the table top.
  8. The corner joints are lightly sanded with fine sandpaper.

The film is swollen, peeling off

The peel-off film can be glued back if this drawback is minor. For these purposes, ordinary PVA glue is suitable. The main thing is to get to all hard-to-reach places.

Video: gluing shrink film with PVA glue

When the problem becomes global, the film will have to be removed. This is done as follows.

And after that, two options are possible: either paint the facades, or glue a new film.

Facade painting

If it is decided to paint, then the facades will need to be sanded in order to clean off the remnants of the glue and level the surface. This applies to both MDF, chipboard and solid wood. The material may be rough in the places where the cutter was cut. To prepare for painting, professionals recommend taking:

  • sandpaper P220-280 on foam rubber. It takes shape better and can be sanded with complex bends;
  • scotch tape bright P220-280 is a non-woven abrasive material, somewhat reminiscent of felt. Hard-to-reach places pass through them;
  • anti-silicone - acts as a degreaser;
  • primer for plastic (suitable for wood);
  • epoxy primer - needed for good adhesion;
  • acrylic primer - pore-filling, for leveling the plane;
  • solvents.

If there is gloss on the facade, it is necessary to knock it down over the entire plane, to achieve dullness. Then carefully remove dust from the surface, degrease it and apply a primer for plastic. Then it is primed with epoxy primer, let it dry for 3-4 hours (if there is no paintwork on the facades, you can skip this step) and primed with a filling primer, polished, preparing the facades for painting.

Spray paint is often used as a dye. When painting facades, the ends first pass, then paint is applied in a smooth movement from side to side, moving from bottom to top or from top to bottom, with overlapping layers.

Decoupage

Decoupage is a popular way to update furniture. It is typical for rustic interior styles, especially Provence.

The first step is to unscrew the handles from the facades.

If there are any defects, then they are eliminated.

You can use a paint remover to remove paintwork. After applying the product with a brush, cover the facade with foil.

Then, having stood the time, according to the instructions, the varnish is cleaned off with a spatula, removing the film as it is cleaned. Re-use of the wash is allowed.

The surface is well sanded, dust is removed with a damp cloth.

To achieve transparency of the paint, mix white acrylic lacquer and white acrylic paint. Painted in the direction of the grain of the tree.

The drawing must be carefully cut with a clerical knife along the contour, adjusted to the size of the plane. To arrange the elements symmetrically, the distances are controlled with a measuring tool.

Apply a napkin and apply PVA glue on top of it.

Then, after the glue has dried, pass the surface with a fine sandpaper.

Apply a thin layer of acrylic varnish. Sanding and varnishing again.

Additionally, the facades can be decorated with putty. The composition is prepared as follows: mix the oil putty with PVA glue, achieving the consistency of sour cream. Attach the stencil in the right place and put putty on top of the stencil with a spatula.

The resulting ornament is polished with fine sandpaper. If desired, you can tint the putty. Then this area is covered with acrylic white varnish.

Then matte yacht varnish is applied to the surface.

Adhesion of self-adhesive foil

If you want to give the MDF facades a certain texture, use a self-adhesive film. Before gluing the film, the facade is prepared as before painting. It is important to stick the film neatly, avoiding the appearance of bubbles.

  1. First, cut out a suitable piece of film with 2 cm allowances on each side. Then the film is evenly applied to the edge of the facade, after removing 5-10 cm of the protective strip.
  2. Glue the material in small areas, smoothing and gradually removing the protective film.
  3. If, nevertheless, bubbles have formed and they cannot be expelled, it is necessary to pierce them and release the air.

Replacing the countertop

The chipboard tabletop sometimes becomes unusable completely, if, for example, it is swollen from water. In this case, it is not necessary to order a new one. You can make your own tile countertop. Such countertops, firstly, are durable, and secondly, you can choose almost any design. It is fashionable to lay out a mosaic tabletop.

The base of the table top is extruded polystyrene foam. It is installed on liquid nails.

First, liquid nails are applied to the base, then sheets of expanded polystyrene are laid.

A metal plinth is installed on liquid nails to protect the ends of the countertop.

Then the corner plinth

and a thin skirting board for tiles.

Then tile adhesive is applied to the countertop.

The same is done with the tiles. And they glue it to the countertop.

Broken mounting holes

Particleboard tends not only to swell from water, but also crumble under load. From the frequent inaccurate opening of cabinet doors, self-tapping screws break the holes and pull out what is called "by the root". It is impossible to simply screw the self-tapping screw into the same place. But there is one long-known method of repairing broken holes, which is still successfully used.

If more serious damage occurs when the laminate around the attachment point peels off, use another method. PVA glue and wood shavings are mixed. The damage is filled with this composition. Allow to dry, and then screw in a self-tapping screw, as if it were a new surface.

Second life for chairs

Analyzing the methods of repairing kitchen furniture, it is necessary to say about the repair of chairs. The easiest way to update is with a cover that will hide any scuffs, scratches or patches on the seat. If the chair has a solid seat, then it is enough to paint it, you can decorate it with decoupage. The work is carried out according to the same scheme as in the case of the restoration of the facades. An old chair with a padded seat must be overtightened. Let's take a closer look at how to do this. From materials and tools you will need: medium-grain sandpaper, primer, brushes of different sizes, gloves, paint, batting, upholstery fabric, furniture stapler.

First, remove the seat and remove the upholstery and padding.

Then cover the wooden seat with a primer, it has antiseptic properties. After priming, leave to dry completely.

The chair itself must be sanded, then primed and these two steps repeated again. If you want to achieve the effect of a perfectly smooth surface, then you need to do additional sanding and priming, and with a leveling primer.

Then you can start painting. It is recommended to start painting from the inner parts, from the bottom.

Then the chair is turned over and paint is applied to the top of it. After drying for 24 hours, the stool is painted with a second coat of paint.

Leaving allowances of 4-5 cm, cut out a piece of fabric to fit the seat, two sides at once. Moreover, the fold of the fabric should coincide with the outer edge of the seat, i.e. the parts will be joined together.

Then the batting is cut out. It is enough to lay the fabric in 4 layers.

All batting is fixed around the perimeter with a furniture stapler.

Then they lay out the upholstery with the wrong side up, put the seat down with batting.

They pass with a stapler along the sides, then separately fold the upholstery at the corners, secure with staples. Put the remaining piece of upholstery on top, fold the excess inward. And they pass with a stapler or hot glue.

Replace the seat.

And it also happens that a tree dries up, and the chair begins to wobble. This problem also fixes itself.
