If you want to try to do something with your own hands, but you have little experience, it is advisable to start with the simplest ideas. Simple crafts will help improve skills in working with various materials and tools. In this article we will tell you how to make a hanging table with your own hands. The project is extremely simple, you will need a minimum of materials and tools, and practically no financial investments are required.

Materials and tools for making a hanging table:

Cutting board

Braided wire or thin rope

Crimp rings (when choosing, be guided by the diameter of the cable)

How to make a hanging table

Using pliers or a chisel, prepare two identical lengths of braided cable or steel wire.

Mark and drill 4 holes in the cutting board. The holes should be opposite each other, as shown in the photo.

Cut a piece of leather the same size and shape as the cutting board.

Mark where the holes should be, pierce them with a punch or special pliers.

Apply glue to the board, glue the skin on top. Let the glue dry.

Pull each of the cables through two opposite holes, as shown in the photo.

Make loops at the ends of the cables, fix them with ferrules.

Screw the hook into the ceiling and put four loops on it.

Note: if the ceiling is concrete, you need to use a screw with a dowel.

Today we will try to make something from the chain. In fact, a lot of things can be made from the chain, ranging from bringing the dog to the booth and ending with some works of art. We will take something in between and make an original chair, which is quite a work of art.

Looking ahead, the author wants to say that he did not think that this process could take so long. And it dragged on due to welding work, and why, you yourself will understand everything later.
Today we need a chain, a lot of chain. Certainly not 100 meters, but 5 meters of 8mm chain for sure. And the first step is to block off something like a conductor that will keep our chain taut. For this, the bar that the master left after making the workbench is perfect. You will also need a couple of screws.






The first segments that we need to weld should be 75 cm long, and their total number should be 4 pieces. The template is ready, let's move on to welding.




And at this stage, the first problems began. It seems like everything is boiled, but in the end it turns out like this:




The author, of course, is a novice welder, but for the links to be welded through one, this is just some kind of joke, to be honest. With grief in half, having boiled one side of the chain, turn the chain over, fix it and boil it on the other side. Of course, you can weld huge pieces of metal on each link of the chain so that the chain will probably fail well, but since we also need aesthetics, we don’t weld the links much, we just grab them lightly, but still, to make it strong, because of this, such an opportunity was obtained.
Having welded all the links to the desired length, cut off the rest of the chain with a grinder.
And from the monotonous and tedious work, the author entertained himself like this, let the wave through the chain:




Next, we need 8 blanks of 30 cm each. In fact, with 30 centimeters there was a bust, 25 would be enough, but since I sawed off and welded, we will already use what has been done.


Every time during the welding work, the author tried to adjust the camera so that the welding seam could be seen straight, and in the end he almost succeeded.
Having welded all 8 segments, be sure to beat off the slag. On those 75-centimeter sections, too, by the way, it was necessary to beat off the slag.


We take the first two blanks, lay them parallel to each other and put one blank so that the letter “P” is obtained. And of course we weld it all.






At these points, before welding, be sure to set an even angle, well, at least approximately, since the chain is not perfectly even.
We measure 50 cm from the upper part of the U-shaped structure and weld the crossbar. And, by the way, here the master was also mistaken. It was necessary to make at least 10 centimeters higher and it would be more convenient.




Next, we weld a vertical stand to the U-shaped structure and be sure to check the evenness of the angle, because the future quality of our product will depend on this.


The next day, the master finished assembling this entire structure and it turned out something like this:


And it was necessary to check this design for durability. We make a feint, sit down and fall.






One leg buckled, so you need to think about something. The author straightened the leg and tried to conduct another test.




In principle, relatively stable. It holds such a weight, but it probably won’t pull more. The master did a couple of exercises and began to think about what to do next, because the structure had to be strengthened. The surest solution was to weld another long chain and cut it into 9 links, so that in the end we got 8 segments. We put these 8 segments in the spacer of the lower legs, they were supposed to give rigidity to the structure.
We weld and scald everything and get the following result:








It seems to have turned out even better than it was. You can calmly exhale and finally turn off the welding machine, setting it aside, in this project it will no longer be needed.
Next, we move on to wood. Let's take the countertop, which the author still has from the manufacture of the lamp and measure out a square with a side of 40 cm. We clamp everything with clamps to the workbench and saw off with a jigsaw.






We will process the edges with sandpaper and immediately install the table top on the chain structure and check the evenness of the product so that later there are no nuances.




Everything turned out to be smooth, but it’s not just like that, I had to weld a couple of chain links here and there to really make everything even.
Now let's take the platband, also left over from one of the previous author's projects, and cut 4 pieces at an angle of 45 degrees.
First, we will compress the entire structure with clamps in order to understand where what gap is obtained. We will fasten the countertop and the casing, as always, with glue and self-tapping screws. Therefore, we apply a strip of glue and press the trim to the countertop, drill 3 holes and tighten 3 screws.






Unfortunately, it didn’t work out to cut the corners perfectly evenly, because, as you can see, the miter box goes into spacing. Therefore, in order to somehow more or less fix this jamb, we interfere with sawdust with glue and cover the resulting cracks with this composition.






It turned out of course so-so quality, but I think it will go for the garage. The next day, the master sanded off the remaining glue and decided to work on aesthetics a little more.


As you can see, the architraves from the factory have unpleasant artifacts that the paint does not adhere to very well.




Therefore, we will be a little confused to remove them. To do this, we need a miracle of Chinese engineering in this plastic box.


Inside the suitcase we have a dremel (or an engraver, whoever calls him).




The dreml comes with 5 nozzles and 4 drills. The only downside is that it doesn't come with our fork, but this problem is easily solved with pliers and another fork. There is a speed controller on the power supply for the dremel, but we won’t bother, we’ll set it to maximum speed right away. We turn on the dremel using a large metal key and using a cylindrical nozzle from another dremel with sandpaper, we will process all the bumps.




Having processed all the edges, the author decided to engrave. The master decided to sign his homemade products with his last name. Perhaps a little immodest, but so be it. Of course, there was no special cutter for engraving, but he decided to do it with a drill.






Surprisingly, the drill bit included with the dremel did the job. Of course, it didn’t turn out perfectly even, but just right for a garage style. To remove burrs and add evenness to the letters, this nozzle helped:

They prepared 2 meters of rusty lifting chain for the manufacture of two legs, after cutting out two cavities in the tabletop to accommodate them.

Each link of the chain has been welded to another and each weld has been meticulously polished.

After the first leg was ready, they tested it by placing a weight of 170 kg on it. They also coated the chain with anti-corrosion paint, and the table was treated with a water-based wood impregnation in rosewood color.

The dark brown stains of the impregnation were quickly erased, revealing an amazing picture of the multifaceted wood.

This piece of furniture is not very functional due to the peculiarities of its design, but there are ways to increase its capabilities with the help of simple design solutions.

Peculiarities

The main difference between such tables and ordinary ones will be their design. The hanging surface does not rest on the floor in any way and such products do not have legs. The load falls on the chains, which act as suspension fasteners. The general appearance of such furniture is unusual and attracts attention precisely by the absence of familiar legs.

Due to the fact that the plane is suspended from the ceiling on chains, it can swing and move to the sides. This does not allow you to fully use this piece of furniture for its intended purpose - dining at such a table or using it as a work surface is not very good. There is always a risk of tipping everything to the floor when rocking the countertop.

Therefore, without additional fasteners, such surfaces can only perform a decorative function. On vintage ships, their ability to sway and maintain a horizontal position was a plus, but, in the modern world, this property is more likely to be detrimental. However, as an additional element of decor, such products can be used.

In addition, such furniture can be installed in a garden gazebo, where there is usually no need for a classic table, and you can put a book or other similar things on it without fear for their fate. At the same time, there are several small tricks to make such products more functional.

An exception would be wall models where chains are needed to support the free edge of the surface. One side of such countertops is rigidly attached to the wall, and the other hangs on hangers. Such products are more durable and do not swing, which means that you can use them in a standard way. In addition, making them yourself is the easiest.

Expanding the possibilities

If you really want to have a suspended table on chains attached to the ceiling, then you can reduce the risk of it tipping over or tilting, in which everything from the surface will fall to the floor. Several solutions:

  • You can simply weld together the links of the chains on which everything hangs, providing them with sufficient rigidity. The fastener will turn out to be monolithic and the surface will not sway. At the same time, it is quite difficult to externally distinguish between welded links and freely hanging ones, which means that the impression will remain that the plane is hanging.
  • The second way is to increase the mass. Usually, large planes are made very massive so that they sway less. With a total weight of about fifty kilograms, the furniture is quite stable and is quite suitable for use as a dining area.
  • The third option is to fix the plane with braces from the same chains from below. It will look like suspensions passed through the surface, and the stability of the structure is guaranteed. Such a solution will be one of the most durable and less prone to rocking.
  • The last option is similar to the previous one and is suitable only for the largest options. Here, from below in the central part, an additional supporting element is installed, which will not be visible from the outside. The plane is rigidly fixed - there will be no swaying and other troubles, but outwardly, the product will seem to be hanging on suspensions.

Using one of these techniques, you can significantly increase the strength of the entire structure and eliminate the possibility of overturning what will lie on it. At the same time, there are different ways to solve the problem - from simple, using a support, to the most difficult to implement, like suspension links welded together. This matters in cases where everything is assembled by hand, and not made to order.
