Futon: what is it and what is its place in a modern interior. DIY sofa

Most of the pillows presented here are quite realistic to do with your own hands, just a little diligence is enough.

A DIY chair can be any shape you like...

The straight edge of the mattress is divided into three parts. a zipper is sewn into the seam of two identical extreme parts, with the help of which the mattress turns into a chair.

BAG CHAIR

All the materials needed to make a chair can be easily bought at sewing stores. And the filler is sold by firms that are engaged in the production of thermal insulation materials.

When purchasing Styrofoam, keep in mind that too small balls will make your chair heavy, and too large - they will not be evenly distributed over the chair.

The simplest version of the chair is a large pillow or pouffe.

1. According to the previously prepared paper patterns, cut the material (for example, according to the diagram as in the figure, you can also come up with something in the form of an ordinary square or oval) according to the dimensions you need, be sure to add 1.5 cm on each side for an allowance.

2. Chop off all the details from the wrong side with needles and, leaving about 30 cm for inserting a zipper, sweep everything with a hand seam. Then sew the zipper in the same way. Sew all parts on a typewriter and then remove temporary seams.

3. Overlock all seams or apply a second line, having previously folded the allowance.

4. Turn out the entire product. Iron or steam, if necessary.

5. Fill the resulting case with polystyrene foam, using a plastic bottle with a pre-cut neck. To prevent the foam balls from crumbling, you need to glue the bottle with tape to the hole in the chair cover.

6. Sew a slightly larger outer cover according to the principle of the inner one. Stroke, steam. Put on the finished chair.

Easily, quickly and simply, you got an interesting and unusual bean bag chair. If you used artificial leather for the outer case, install a couple of small eyelets.

They will ensure the exit of air from the gap between the inner and outer covers. To ensure that the chair is always lush and never loses its charming and unusual look, duplicate the outer cover with a layer of padding polyester. And in order for your bean bag chair to serve you for a long time and always please the eye, do not place it near a heat source and do not completely place it in water.

Folding chair

sun lounger - bed

Put several identical pillows in one pillowcase, divided into parts by seams

And you will get a children's mattress made of pillows. Velcro can be added to opposite edges

This version of the bed, which turns into two types of chairs, was invented by professional designers.

If you look closely, you can understand how to turn a bed into each of the chairs using strong strings.

Modular pillows, which are a set of regular pillows with locks on the sides. If desired, they are fastened to each other, allowing you to collect something more - for example, a mattress or a small easy chair

To sew such a module, you will need several identical square pillows, the same number of identical pillowcases of the same size and several identical zippers.

We bring to the attention of home craftsmen an original design - a do-it-yourself sofa bed, adapted to the popular Japanese futon mattress. On these thin mats stuffed with dry algae, the people of the Far East have been sleeping for 20 centuries.

The composition of the filler of modern futons has changed, but remains of high quality. Now they are stuffed with natural latex, cotton, coconut coir or thermal fiber. But on the floor, like the Japanese, we are not accustomed to sleeping, even on futons. In this case, a do-it-yourself folding sofa assembled from pine furniture panels will help us out.

Preparation for work

The model presented here has a simple design. The frames of the main modules, seats and backrests are assembled in a similar way: 2 side walls are connected in front and behind with two boards. The base for the mattress, consisting of transverse slats, is attached to the longitudinal parts. Noteworthy is the functionality of the folding legs. When folded, they steadily support the back, when unfolding the sofa, they serve as a reliable support for the bed.

Blanks from a furniture board:

  • Sidewalls of the seat frame with dimensions 38x350x830 mm - 2 pcs.

  • Longitudinal boards of the back frame 38x90x2080 - 2 pcs.
  • Bars to reinforce the back frame 38x55x730 mm - 2 pcs.

The two sides of the backrest are made of 28 mm thick furniture board. Their final dimensions are 28x130x1050 mm.

Planed lumber blanks:

Of the consumables you will need:

  • Bolts M8x80 - 4 pcs., M8x70 - 2 pcs.
  • Self-locking nuts M8 - 6 pcs.
  • Washers 25x8.5x1 mm - 3 pcs.
  • Screws 6x80 mm - 2 pcs., Plus 6 washers for them.
  • Wooden dowels with a diameter of 8 mm - 16 pcs.
  • Sets of furniture ties - 8 pcs. The kit includes M5x80 mm screws (hexagon socket head), washers and bushings ∅10x15 mm, M5 internal thread.
  • Various screws.
  • Synthetic belt 25 mm wide, 8 m long.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Carpenter's glue, furniture varnish.

To work, you will need the following tools:

  1. Table saw.
  2. Electric jigsaw.
  3. Drill and drills.
  4. Screwdriver.

The process of making a sofa bed

Starting our task of how to make a folding sofa, we first cut out all the necessary blanks with a circular saw. We round all the corners with a jigsaw, and smooth the edges with fine-grained sandpaper. Before assembly, all blanks are covered with acrylic varnish and dried.

The sides of the seat are connected by longitudinal boards. Fasteners are 2 dowels on glue and one furniture screed. This gives the structure the necessary rigidity.

The back is assembled in the same way. Here it is necessary to measure with maximum accuracy the location of the holes for the axle bolts to rotate the back and legs of the sofa (in the drawing they are indicated by crosses). Articulations are made with bolts and hex self-locking nuts. To reduce the friction of the back and side walls, we put washers 25x8.5x1 mm under the nuts.

Using screws and glue, bars with a section of 30x30 mm are attached to the longitudinal boards of the back and seat for laying the slatted base. Considering the thickness of the mattress (120 mm), we attach the longitudinal boards and the seat grill 45 mm below the upper level of the sidewalls. Then the height of the seat from the floor will be 425 mm. The question of how to make a sofa bed optimal for sitting has been resolved.

We insert bushings with internal thread taken from furniture sets into the holes of the longitudinal boards ∅10mm. We screw M5x80 screws into them with a head having an internal hexagon. We tighten them with a socket wrench.

We connect the swivel joints of the legs on both sides using 80 mm screws, a bar ∅22 mm and three washers.

We fasten the straps with a belt tape. To do this, we press a long piece of board or bar with clamps to the workbench, which will serve as an emphasis. Measuring pads can be made from the remnants of chipboard.

We connect the seat and back frames with bolts. To give strength on both inner sides of the sidewalls of the back, we glue the bars and press them with clamps until completely dry.

We fasten the cross rails to the screws, screwing one at a time on the left and right. Supports in the raised state provide additional support to the back of the structure.

Let's try to push our sofa. The backrest needs to be slightly forward and pull the round beam connecting the legs towards you. The result is a double bed with dimensions of 1600x2000 mm.

The futon mattress with natural filling is well ventilated through the slatted structure.

The back and seat after assembling the sofa seem a little disproportionate. However, having laid a futon 12 cm thick on the gratings, we will fully appreciate the convenience of the design. In order for the mattress to hold well on the seat, it must be tied with fabric ribbons to the lower longitudinal part of the backrest.

As a result, we got a folding sofa of an unusual shape, ideally suited for a Japanese futon. A new piece of furniture will give the interior an oriental flavor and will become a favorite place for the family to relax.

Mattress-shaped pillows can be used to make an armchair or a whole sofa by connecting them together. Such designs are multivariate: the shape and dimensions depend on the needs and can change, it is enough to attach or remove pillows. And the easily replaceable cover allows you to play with the colors of the furniture, making your sofa out of multi-colored “cubes”. And if the coloring is tired, just change the cover.

Rectangular seat cushions are complemented by cushions or just small sofa cushions. And the elements not used in the design of the sofa will become poufs. By the way, if you put a solid tabletop (for example, a wooden shield or thick glass) on such a pouf-pillow, you will get another piece of furniture - a coffee table.

A frameless sofa can also be used as a sleeping place: it is enough to “spread out” specially designed pillows for this. The absence of heavy mechanisms will allow even a child to cope with this task.

Sleeper sofa. Photo from smartballs.ru

Soft designs are a good option for kids. There are models created specifically for children's rooms: from the modules you can assemble not only a piece of furniture, but also build a house for games.

Separate elements in such sofas and armchairs are interconnected using conventional textile zippers or Velcro. Therefore, such a design can be made independently, because modern fillers for upholstered furniture are easy to find on sale.

bean bag

Perhaps the most popular type of furniture without a frame is a bean bag or binbag. The name comes from the English words bean and bag, which translates to "bag of beans". They say that the idea to create such a chair by designer Roger Dean was prompted by a farmer who sat down to rest on a bag of beans.

Modern binbags are filled, of course, not with beans, but with polystyrene balls. Due to its design, the bean bag chair is comfortable to sit in any position: it takes the shape of the human body.

Polyurethane foam sofas

Frameless furniture also includes polyurethane foam products. Such sofas and armchairs are not too soft, but the material allows you to do without a rigid support and create any shape.

If a modular sofa is not very difficult to make on your own, then sofas and chairs made of molded polyurethane foam require factory conditions. The liquid material is poured into a mold where it solidifies under pressure through a chemical reaction.

Futons

For a European home, furniture in the form of mattresses is a fairly modern solution. But for a Japanese home, a futon mattress is a common piece of furniture.

In a traditional Japanese home, they sleep on a tatami-covered floor, on a mattress stuffed with cotton wool - a futon. And during the day, bedding is folded and put away in the closet.

In the European version, the futon has been somewhat modernized. There are futon sofas. True, this is not entirely frameless furniture. The futon mattress is not placed directly on the floor, but on a low wooden bench, which, with the help of a simple mechanism, can be turned into an armchair or sofa, depending on the width of the mattress.

A slightly modified semicircular futon mattress can be converted into an armchair without any frame. For this, there are Velcro straps on the back side.

In Japanese traditions, there is another very convenient device - kotatsu. This is a low table in which the frame and top are separated from each other. The frame is covered with a futon or thick blanket, and a countertop is laid on top.

It turns out a table and a heater at the same time. The modern version of the kotatsu is equipped with an electric stove located under the table top on the frame.

Previously, the electric heater was replaced by a brazier with coals in the floor niche. The brazier was used for cooking, then a kotatsu was placed on top and covered with a futon, on top of which a countertop was laid.

Japanese houses are not very insulated, so this design was used as a heating pad: the whole family sat around the table on seat cushions, covering their legs with a futon. The brazier provided heat, which was retained by the kotatsu blanket.

That's where the expression "warm company" came from! Photo from the site cipusa.org

Such a table with a blanket in Japan can be found not only in private homes, but also in trains, restaurants, stadiums and other public places. Of course, it’s unusual for us to dine under a blanket, but for a country house, for example, for gatherings in a grill house, kotatsu is very suitable.

Frameless upholstered furniture is diverse, everyone will find an option to their liking. Comfortable and informal, bright and unconventional - such furniture is simply created for giving and country rest.

In a previous post, we talked in detail about . And, if you study the previous material, it becomes clear that she is a futon. The traditional Japanese bedding, which is a thick cotton mattress, serves as a place to sleep at night, and in the morning it is either put away in a closet or transformed into other furniture: a sofa, armchair or ottoman. A futon is indispensable in small apartments, when it is not possible to install a solid bed - they simply put it on the floor.

Futon mattress - a traditional Japanese place to sleep

Japan differs from a number of other countries in its unusual traditions, especially if we take into account the European states. But, nevertheless, each tradition in this case is justified and thought out to the smallest detail. The Japanese are an ascetic people of great intelligence, and if they already came up with the idea of sleeping on the floor, then they had good reasons for this.

The Land of the Rising Sun is one of the ten most densely populated countries, while in terms of territory it loses to many. And, accordingly, the population density in the state where cherry blossom day is celebrated is decent - more than 300 people per 1 km². Due to overcrowding, most Japanese did not have the opportunity to live in large houses. Often they didn’t even have a separate room for sleeping, so they had to sleep on the floor. It is worth noting that the hot Japanese climate also contributed to the emergence of this tradition.

The Japanese invented sleeping on the floor

The production of futons in Japan became widespread only in the 18th century, when cotton imports were established. Whereas two centuries before that, the Japanese slept on more rigid tatami mats made of straw. In the 17th century, the futon was invented, but because of its high cost, such a bed was the prerogative of the rich and was considered an element of luxury.

🈵The traditional Japanese mattress was considered a rich gift option - only a beloved woman or a very important person could receive such a present.

The Great Industrial Revolution changed everything. The product has become publicly available, and the technology of its production has changed. In the 1940s, Japanese mattresses went into the world - they were made in the USA, and a little later in Europe.

Video: what is a futon

Today, entire collections have been developed, and the futon is no longer just a mattress. But before moving on to the new features, let's take a look at what's hidden in a modern Japanese-style stock.

Fillers

The futon has become multi-layered, and the number of layers in a particular product varies. As before, in the manufacture of the product, preference is given to natural materials. These are mainly latex, cotton and coconut coir, more budget options are made from artificial latex, polyurethane foam. A separate block is to highlight products that are filled with orthopedic foam.

The main materials for filling the futon:

  • Memory- innovative orthopedic foam that remembers the shape of the body of a sleeping person and adapts to its anatomical features. Having a memory effect, the foam maintains the skeletal muscle apparatus in the right position, while ensuring normal blood circulation. The material is 100% hypoallergenic, because it is designed so that no dust mites can survive in it.
  • coconut coir- environmentally friendly material, made from natural coconut fibers, does not accumulate moisture and odors. Coconut coir filler is fastened with a needle-punched method, the rigidity is high. After weaving, the layer is treated with a latex solution, which gives it strength and flexibility.

coconut coir

  • Sponflex- regenerated cotton, linen and jute fibers intertwined. Elastic and elastic natural filler.
  • polyurethane foam- material with a porous structure, thanks to which it is well ventilated. It retains its shape well, elastic, quickly recovers after exertion, does not cause allergies.
  • Latex- natural hypoallergenic filler, made from the juice of the rubber tree hevea, has a microporous structure. Key advantages: does not accumulate odors and dust, hygroscopic, warms in cold weather and does not heat up in hot weather, has anatomical and orthopedic properties.

At the present time, the futon as a sleeping place on the floor is not used so often. More often, it acts as a mattress, can be used to improve sleeping conditions on a sofa, stacked on top of a regular mattress, transformed into a sofa, armchair, pouffe, used as an alternative to a topper.

Sofa

Futon sofa - transforming furniture, ideal for small spaces. When folded, it takes up a minimum of space, while when transformed, it turns into a full-fledged place to sleep. In the manufacture of frames for such sofas, preference is given to natural materials. The design is a simple mechanism-book, to which a Japanese mattress is attached, it is easy to unfold.

Futon sofa

Japanese-style sofas with a low frame, on which a three-fold futon is attached on top, are also widely used. The first two layers form the seat, while the third forms the back.

Futon sofa

Bed

Futon, as we said above, can also be used as the main mattress for the bed, and as a topper, which gives additional rigidity to the surface. It is also indispensable when arranging a bed in the Japanese style - such a bed is an order of magnitude lower than the traditional one.

The futon can be cleaned and vacuumed. In addition, it is recommended from time to time to take it outside for ventilation, leaving it in the sun for several hours. If the product is not used constantly, then it is better to store it in a special protective case.

Futon on the bed

Armchair

Such a futon chair has a certain resemblance to a nest for birds - soft and cozy, it literally invites you into its arms. A hybrid between a futon bed and an armchair, this very original and no less functional piece of furniture in an instant turns from a stylish seat into a comfortable lounger.

Futon chair

Ottoman

In this case, we again have a futon, which, with the help of simple manipulations, turns from a comfortable pouf into a comfortable sleeping place. The uniqueness of this furniture is that it does not need to be rolled up and hidden in a closet after sleep. It is enough just to fold it, and the mattress turns into a compact ottoman for sitting or a small table.

Futon Advantages and Disadvantages

Futons have many advantages, which is the reason for their popularity. Thin mattresses are universal, provide their owners with a comfortable sleep, have a high wear resistance class, are functional and easy to use, and their price is relatively small.

But at the same time, the product also has disadvantages. Compared to a conventional mattress, a Japanese mattress has a shorter lifespan. But here a lot depends on the manufacturer and type of futon - this is important to consider when choosing.

🈯 The cover in most products cannot be removed and washed - this is also worth paying attention to when buying.

Soft futon

You need to choose a futon based solely on your preferences, taking into account the size of a potential bed. It is important to pay attention to the degree of rigidity, the permissible load weight.

🈚 If you like to sleep on a hard surface - choose a futon with a layer of coconut coir, if on a soft one - the best option is latex or polyurethane foam.

How to make your own futon

So, as we have already seen, Japanese bedding has a lot of advantages, excellent performance, easy to care for, and will certainly come in handy in every home. And, of course, you can make a futon yourself, with your own hands. This process is quite painstaking, and the video below is a clear proof of this: it is probably easier for many to buy a finished product.

In this article we will talk in detail about such a little thing as a futon. What it is? Believe me, this is a very useful and necessary thing in everyday life. Already want to know more information?

Futon - what is it?

The so-called futon came to us from Japan. By the way, this is their most favorite and traditional sleeping mattress, distinguished by its fairly thick cotton fabric.

In their beautiful and such an unusual country, it is customary to spread this bedding on the floor before going to bed, and in the morning (after sleep) twist it and put it in the closet. Back in the 13th century, most Japanese from poor families slept on simple straw, while the rest of the mass of the rich already basked on their soft and expensive mattresses.

It was from that time that the first futons began to appear. They gradually gained more and more popularity among the entire Japanese population and in other countries of the world. Their fame began to spread more and more. And now, today, the traditional Japanese futon mattress occupies almost the most important role in creating oriental-style interiors.

Minimalism as a lifestyle

The main principle is a lot of light, space and freedom, as well as a lot of natural materials, arranged wisely. People who have grown up since childhood and are accustomed to the European style, design in the house, can sometimes be surprised to see how, for example, Japanese housing is equipped, which is characterized by absolute minimalism. They have practically no extra furniture, which greatly increases the free space.

Also in such interiors there are large windows that give access to the rays of the sun. Everything is concise and extremely natural. Minimalism is a way to get rid of everything unnecessary, superfluous, in order to focus on the really important things in life and focus on real happiness, joy and unlimited freedom from everything.

In a word, minimalism is not when your home lacks certain things, furniture, items and so on. This is the state when everything that is in your living space is the only thing that is really needed for complete comfort and satisfaction. This is exactly what the Japanese are leaning towards.

One must be free and independent from many worldly things and pleasures. In this style, there is a certain restraint, ascetic attractiveness, at the same time, the house is full of philosophical meaning. A complete merging with nature reigns here, and the dwelling directly radiates harmony. That's what really matters! However, back to the topic of our conversation.

How to care for a futon?

A real Japanese futon is distinguished by its high quality and size. It is much larger and more voluminous than simple air mattresses, which tend to deflate. In order for your futon to look good and not deteriorate, you need to properly care for it. More precisely:

  1. Don't box it. Spread it only on a smooth floor (the set should include a special mat, on which the mattress itself should be placed).
  2. In order not to stain it in any way, you should always lay a sheet on top of it.
  3. When you no longer need the futon (you have slept and do not plan to touch it all day), you should fold it in three and carefully hide it somewhere inconspicuous: a corner of the room or in a closet. On top of the mattress itself there are already blankets, which you must fold 4 times and lay a pillow on them.
  4. It is not recommended to leave a Japanese futon unattended and unused for a long time, so that mites or mold do not breed there.
  5. Be sure to arrange an airing procedure for your mattress. Hang it in a bright and sunny place, where there will be a lot of fresh air (the air should not be humid). Do this as soon as the opportunity arises. This is an excellent prevention of various kinds of mold or fungi. In addition, in the fresh, open air, musty and unpleasant odors disappear. You can also resort to using a mattress beater.
  6. Regularly wash and clean your floor on which the futon rests, and also clean the rug on which it rests. You can not walk on it in shoes or dirty feet.
  7. Try to wash your own blankets and sheets as soon as you need to. You can also wash the mattress itself. But, unfortunately, not all houses have double washing machines. Therefore, you can seek help from a dry cleaner. True, you need to find out in advance whether they are cleaning such a mattress as a futon. “What is it?” - such questions can easily arise from non-professionals.

Japanese bedding is very useful!

Natural and traditional Japanese futons are made entirely of wool, linen, cotton, coconut sackcloth or buckwheat husks. They have supporters among today's youth. Why? Yes, because such mattresses have an orthopedic effect, so they are very useful for the spine and overall health.

What other furniture is made from natural futon?

Modern technologies are developing, and the production of bedding is also not far behind them. For greater comfort and variety, we came up with new interesting and comfortable pieces of furniture. For example, a futon chair. It is very convenient, which means that many will like it!

It is also worth highlighting the futon sofa. Such products are basically laid out in the same way as ordinary ones. They have a very simple mechanism. Never creak. At the base is something like a wooden bench, on top of which lies the mattress itself. Due to the fact that the futon consists of a large number of layers of combed cotton, which are combined with different stitches and covered with a rather coarse fabric, such a thing is very useful for the back of any person.

Futon sofas are small and practical, and armchairs are quite functional and also save space well. All products have an unusual design and shape. Your guests will always be pleased to sit on such a Japanese invention from a seemingly ordinary mattress.

The whole range of futon products for sleeping and decorating the room always has a very good customer rating. Especially those who are trying to decorate their home in the Japanese style or just love minimalism.

To date, many, after reading reviews of the futon, immediately decide to purchase such a miracle for themselves, which allows them to significantly save space. Natural Japanese futon does not cause allergies. In addition, it improves sleep, makes it calmer, more comfortable, and also aligns the spine, which is very useful.

Judging by the reviews, a person almost immediately stops complaining of constant back pain. If you really decide to think about your well-being and health, then you should abandon the usual sofa or bed and get yourself a futon sleeping product.

Key Benefits of a Futon

  • Thanks to the quick folding and twisting of both the sofa and the mattress itself, you will have more free space and space for other purposes. This is a great option for small apartments.
  • It has a significant impact on the condition and functionality of your body, in particular the spine.
  • The collection of Japanese futons has different sets that correspond to each of the seasons of the year.

How to choose a good futon?

Now Japanese bedding is so popular that even European manufacturers have begun to manufacture them. Therefore, you can buy such a beautiful and convenient thing almost everywhere. Many people have adapted to shopping without leaving their homes, looking after themselves this or that product in RuNet. Well, it’s also a good option, allowing you to choose the perfect futon for yourself. Photos of products, by the way, are presented in this article.

Before you buy a mattress for yourself, think about the purposes for which it will fit you. In order to spread it upon the arrival of guests and relatives, or to sleep on your own?

  1. Before buying, you should measure the room in which the mattress should be located, as well as the dimensions of the doorways.
  2. Decide on a style. Will the futon be traditional or more modern?
  3. If the mattress is intended for a child's room or your bedroom, you should pay attention to sufficiently strong and more comfortable models. For guests, they usually choose something simple, which is pleasing to the eye.

Required boost of energy

Japan is an ancient and mysterious country with unusual traditions and a unique culture. We adopted a lot from there, diversifying our modern life with original objects and things.

The Japanese-style interior looks quite beautiful, high-quality, harmonious and at the same time simple. Their design is somewhat reminiscent of the so-called asceticism. The more free space and less unnecessary furniture, the more air and positive energy will circulate all the time in your home.

According to the Japanese, this is necessary for a happy and peaceful life. This style is dominated by light and non-provocative shades: sand, beige, pastel, cream, pearl and brown. Bright colors are rare. The most important thing is unity with nature. And here every detail is important. Furniture, floor, and the same futon sofa - everything should be made of wood.

So, let's sum up. Futon - what is it? Now you can safely say that this is a special mattress that performs its functions well. It suits not only the Japanese style, but absolutely any interior in the modern world, has many decors for every taste. A futon can help you relax, make your posture much smoother and more beautiful.
