We paint freshly coated wooden floors. Wood floor painting

The correct selection of tools and materials for painting wooden floors in residential premises, especially the preparation of old and new coatings for the application of coloring compositions, technological rules of work.

Essential tools for painting a wooden floor

Today, you can paint the floor in a room using varnish and paint. At the same time, it is important to correctly choose not only the compositions for finishing, but also the tools. After all, if you do not pay due attention to this issue, then all the flaws in the work will be visible, as well as stains, irregularities, and gaps.

In our work we need the following tools:

  • Roller... It significantly speeds up the process of painting the floor. In addition, it distributes paint in even layers without pronounced transitions. For finishing wooden floors, it is best to opt for a roller with a long handle. This will greatly facilitate the process of applying paint and save you from awkward positions. The floor roller should have a medium bristle length.
  • Brush... This tool is necessary for painting over corners, baseboards and places where it is inconvenient to use a roller.
  • Special tray... Of course, you can save money and choose any available container for pouring paint, but this will increase the consumption of material. The tray has a special design, in which there is a slope to avoid ink settling on the edges of the container and a ribbed surface for removing excess product from the roller or brush.
  • Masking tape... It will be necessary in the case of drawing a pattern on the floor surface or in the presence of places that do not need painting. The adhesive tape has a strong waterproof base, which completely excludes the penetration of water, paint or varnish under it.
  • Various spatulas... This tool is needed to remove old paint or varnish from the floor, when filling cracks and gaps between the planks.
  • Chisel... With this tool, you can widen the sex gap, remove unnecessary knots, loose chips and other irregularities.
  • Parquet scraper... You cannot cope without it if you are dealing with old parquet or varnished floors. It will allow you to process a large surface quickly and with high quality and get a smooth, even coating.
  • Construction hairdryer... The need for this tool will appear when working with a floor on which several layers of paint are applied. With its help, you can easily clear a large area from it in a short time.

Selection of materials for painting wood floor

After you have decided on the tool, you need to select the necessary materials. When painting wooden floors, you will definitely need a putty to seal cracks and cracks, drying oil, paint, a solvent to dilute it and clean your hands upon completion of work. Let's dwell on each material in more detail.

Wood floor putty

There are several varieties of putty for woodworking. When choosing it, start from those characteristics that you need to get at the end of the work.

Consider the types of putties for a wooden floor:

  1. Oil and oil-chalk putties... They fit well, are easy to use and have a long service life. However, they take a very long time to dry. Therefore, the period for painting floors when using them is increased in comparison with other materials.
  2. Acrylic fillers... Today they are considered the most convenient to work with. They look good, do not crack in the future when the board is deformed, they are suitable for sealing small indentations in the floor, they dry quickly.
  3. Homemade putty... This type of material is easy to prepare at home. This will require wood glue and small sawdust. This filler is well suited for preparing floors for varnishing. It does not crack over time, dries quickly, and is easy to apply.

Wood floor paint

The quality of the paint has a huge impact on the condition and appearance of your future coating. Therefore, it is necessary to choose it not only according to the price and recommendations of the sellers, but also based on the humidity of the room, the presence of external mechanical impact on the floor, the condition and type of wood planks.

Oil paint is considered the most inexpensive, resistant to constant stress, has a long service life. Among the disadvantages of this paint, it is worth noting an unpleasant odor and the need for prolonged drying of the room. Acrylic is easy to apply, dries quickly, but has a significant cost.

After you have chosen the paint, you need to calculate the required amount. For this, there is an instruction on the bank itself. Based on it and the number of squares of your floor, you can easily calculate the required volume.

Typically, one square meter of flooring is used from 200 to 250 grams of paint. This amount of composition is lost when the coating is applied in one layer. When painting in two, you need to double the calculated amount.

Wood floor varnishes

Varnishes are used when covering parquet or restoring an old natural wood floor if it has a beautiful pattern. For these purposes, the following compositions can be used:
  • Alkyd based varnish... This material has different shades, is easy to apply, tolerates high humidity and external influences. It works great for all types of wood. However, this type of varnish dries for a long time (at least a day). When applied in large quantities, it can wrinkle and spoil the appearance of the floor.
  • Acrylic based varnish... This type is easy to apply, eliminates creaking between parquet floorboards, dries quickly, and has a low cost. However, it has a number of serious disadvantages, including a short service life, discoloration in direct sunlight, and low resistance to mechanical stress.
The calculation of the required amount of this material is done in the same way as for paints.

When buying several cans of paint or varnish, pay attention to the batch number. It should be the same. This is due to the fact that the composition can have different tones even when choosing the same color.

Preparatory work before painting a wooden floor

Preparing a wooden floor for painting or varnishing is mandatory. It doesn't matter if your flooring is old or just installed. Of course, an old floor that has been painted over and over will take a little more effort and time than a new one to prepare.

Preparing the old floor for painting is about returning the wood to a practically new condition. This is both material and time-consuming.

Let's consider how to prepare a wooden floor for painting:

  1. At the first stage, we remove the old skirting boards. Then we clean the resulting space from debris and old putty.
  2. Now you need to carefully examine the condition of the nails with which the floorboards are attached to the logs. They can fall out, deteriorate or stick out of the canvas. If necessary, the nails are replaced with new ones. The protruding ones need to be drowned in the tree so that they do not interfere with further work.
  3. We will definitely examine the condition of the floorboards. If there is a need for replacement (crack, rot), this must be done before painting the old wood floor.
  4. We proceed to remove paint from the surface. The grinder will help with this. It will easily remove old paint and various irregularities. If you are dealing with several layers, then you need to use a construction hairdryer. The tool will pick up the paint, and then you can easily remove it with a special scraper.
  5. We subject the surface obtained after cleaning to a thorough revision and assessment. If you find significant bumps or bumps, then you will need a sander to remove them. If the floor has cracks or crevices, then it is necessary to carefully seal everything up with a putty and clean the resulting surfaces.
  6. All debris that forms during the work must be carefully removed. You will not be able to do such an operation manually with a broom. Therefore, it is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner, preferably a construction one.

    After that, you need to treat the floor with linseed oil or primer. You need to do this two times. This is due to the fact that the first layer is completely absorbed into the wood. But the second creates the surface necessary for painting.

    Instructions for applying paint to wood floors

    Even if you decide to paint on the floor, you still have to do the first coat of paint in one color. Therefore, first you need to prepare the entire tool and the main coloring composition.

    Stir the paint thoroughly in a jar before starting the application. This will help get rid of possible clots. If the concentration of the composition is very thick, it must be diluted with a special agent.

    In order not to stain clothes and hands, we change into work clothes, hide our hair under a cap or kerchief. We put on gloves on our hands.

    Now you can get to work, following the technology of painting a wooden floor:

    • Pour a small amount of paint into the prepared tray.
    • Having dipped a brush, we begin to paint over the places where the skirting boards were installed. And so along the entire perimeter of the room.
    • Now, using a roller, we start painting the entire room. It is recommended that you start at the front corner and end at the doors.
    • After the first layer of paint has dried well, it is necessary to install the skirting boards and fill up the cracks well.
    • When the applied putty has frozen, the resulting surface is thoroughly cleaned and cleaned of the resulting debris.
    • If your walls are painted, you need to stick masking tape along the line of the baseboards. This will prevent paint from spilling onto the wall.
    • With a brush, carefully paint over the skirting boards twice. After your skirting board is dry, apply a second coat of paint to the floor. If you are planning a drawing, markup is done and a different tone is worn in two layers.
    • When your floor is completely dry, the surface should be washed with soapy water. Thus, you get rid of the stickiness that is inherent in freshly painted surfaces.
    The application of varnish to the floor surface is carried out in exactly the same way.

    How to paint a wooden floor with paint - watch the video:

    There is nothing complicated in the process of painting a wooden floor. And if you show your imagination, you can make the flooring not only beautiful, but also original. Indeed, today the Internet offers a huge number of options for painting a wooden floor.

What color to paint the floor will depend on the design of the room. But here the main point will be the material of manufacture and the external environment. It is on these grounds that it is necessary to decide what paint to paint the floor.

Today we will consider this issue and give recommendations on application materials. You can also watch videos and photos in this article where there will be a lot of useful and necessary information on this issue.

Choosing a floor dye

It is quite possible to apply any coating with your own hands, from this the price will not be high. The main thing is to decide what to apply correctly. There are many materials on the sales market, but this does not mean at all that any can be applied.

Before choosing, you need to look at which one and where is better suited. Below is an instruction on the characteristics of different types of dyes.

Impermeable paints

Usually, wood floors or coatings that have no color are painted with an impervious paint. Various pigments enter the structure of these, which reveal the natural texture of the tree during the period of application.

You can find the following types of opaque paints on the market:

  • Acrylic
  • Polyurethane
  • Alkyd
  • Perchlorovinyl
  • Oil.

Let's analyze the pros and cons (if they exist) of any kind of materials.

Perchlorovinyl paints

They are used to paint woody surfaces both internally and externally. They have great weather resistance characteristics, a rich color palette with bright colors and are quite inexpensive. However, along with these advantages, there are also disadvantages, the factor of which perchlorovinyl paints “retire”.

It is possible to count among them:

  • Virulence, since an unstable organic solvent enters the structure of the color, evaporating from the plane of the tree, has a negative effect on the state of human health, also such volatile elements are quite fire hazardous;
  • Coating cracking I am;
  • Significant level of fading.

Oil dyes

Oil paints were used almost 10 years ago with a fierce triumph among buyers. However, not because they were excellent, but because there was no other selection. Despite today, some people prefer to purchase directly oil paints and varnishes in order to improve the floor in their own buildings and apartments.

  • They have a bright deep tone, an even homogeneous texture, significant stability to changes in temperature systems and, most importantly, low cost.
  • The disadvantage can be considered a long drying time, it will take about a day when this paint dries up, which is extremely and extremely sad. In our time period, no one prefers a long wait. After a few years, you will no longer enjoy a smooth and shiny floor. And you will contemplate a rough and occasionally even cracked plane.
  • If you think about how to paint plywood on the floor, then oil dye is completely suitable. After all, plywood has a limitation in thickness and oil paint will perfectly protect it.

Polyurethane paints

They are characterized by great signs of wear resistance and stability to external influences, excellent protective qualities and durability, but they also have disadvantages along with this (how could it be without their absence).

  • Polyurethane paints are highly toxic due to organic solvents entering their structure.
  • The price of such materials is quite high.

Alkyd paints

They are used to protect woody surfaces from inside and outside rooms. They are characterized by significant resistance to atmospheric precipitation and various fluctuations in temperature and colorful colors. However, the disadvantages of such paints will force you to think 100 times rather than take the risk of purchasing them.

  • During the dyeing period, a very powerful special aroma is spread, it remains even after drying. Of course, do not think that it will be necessary for you to breathe paint for a whole life activity, of course not. It is more correct for everyone, without exception, to be in a different place during this period, thus breathing such air is risky for health, and after several days, maybe several weeks, the “smell” will disappear.
  • The organic solvents entering the structure are quite fire hazardous, for this reason the paint very quickly and simply ignites. Acrylic dispersion paints have been used in great demand in the past years and not in vain!

They have a number of positive aspects:

  • high weather resistance
  • moisture resistance
  • cold hardiness
  • burnout resistance
  • large color palette (more than two thousand of the most varied colors)
  • reliability (up to ten years of service in the absence of the smallest wrangling).

Of course, the only gloomy circumstance upsets the good view - the cost of acrylic paints is quite elevated, of course, and the selection of manufacturers is not already huge in this way. Therefore, in the Russian Federation, such products are now not produced in any way. In this case, everything that comes to us "from behind the hill" is not always of good quality.

For this reason, when choosing acrylic paints, be careful in drawing your attention to the labeling and the state of the manufacturer. For a wooden floor from Spain or Germany, the paint is no worse than the widely advertised Finnish.

Their structure is almost identical, of course, and the properties are similar. Why pay more, if it is possible to purchase an exact similar, but with the most tempting cost.

Colorless coatings for wooden surfaces

Transparent varnishes and impregnating agents belong to this type of paints and varnishes. Let's analyze any type separately.

Colorless dyes include impregnations:

  • Acrylics are distinguished by their significant absorbency into wood. This makes it possible to preserve the flatness of the floor to the maximum. Such impregnations have all the chances to have different colors, with the help of which it is possible to form an extraordinary and magnificent design. Ordinary bunch or roller, the composition is applied. Spraying is also provided, since not everyone is able to spend two hours of their own required period in smearing the impregnation on the floor.
  • They are used for the protection, maintenance and tinting of logs with oil impregnation. They are perfectly impregnated, which is why the plane of the wood becomes strong, sparkling, even the most moisture resistant. For impregnation, the oil is made from naturally modified resins, usually linseed or wood oils.
  • The area of its use is quite sweeping: living rooms, guest rooms, kitchens, bathrooms (see Painting the walls in the bathroom: how to do it right), the village, the pool, in aggregate, almost everywhere, including in the place where there is no heating. Just renew the oil impregnation, if you add specialized products to the water for cleaning the floors.
  • Own the weight of the positives of varnishes. They leave the natural beauty of wood, protect the floor plane from the detrimental effects of external conditions, but they cannot absolutely enjoy the lacquered floor, since a refined lacquer film is in no way able to protect the flooring from spalling, impacts, or any kind of stress.
  • Including when the varnish has dried entirely, without exception, it also remains quite flexible, mobile and moving with each defect simultaneously with the wood fibers. In general, there is no sacrifice, for the sake of charm, to move on the varnished floor only in slippers with delicate soles.

Aspects of the selection of floor paint

There are several criteria, according to which you need to choose a color for the floor.

Here they are:

  • Floor type(wood (see. What and how to paint a wooden floor) or concreted);
  • Floor loads;
  • The texture of the wood (the origin of the log);
  • Where will the painting be carried out a: from the inside of a ventilated or non-ventilated building, on the street, this implies a continuous accumulation of weather precipitation on the plane, in circumstances of high atmospheric moisture, and so on;
  • Certain paints call for specific circumstances, and this: epoxy paints, for the sample, must be done only in well-ventilated rooms, in which case latex - acrylics are perfect for non-ventilated rooms;

Attention: For paints and varnishes of concrete placement, it is necessary to take into account where the repair and construction activities will be laid: if the room is of an apartment type, in this case it is necessary to select paint that has less toxicity.

In a similar way, understanding several options, you can provide a detailed presentation of the required coloring to the dealer - the expert of the shopping center. An expert dealer simply has to advise you after that, choose one or another paint for painting the flooring.

Wood flooring

The wood flooring should be coated with paint and varnish. The low wear resistance of this type of used material is considered.

Thus, if the wood is left and not covered with anything, it is unlikely that it will last more than two, three years for you. After a little time, moldiness, decay can appear on it, it will swell, dry out and change shape, for this reason it is not unimportant to choose a more optimal type of color for the log.

Without exception, all paint and varnish coatings for a log can be divided into 2 types: colorless and impervious. Colorless coatings are specialized varnishes for parquet, where this type makes it possible to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. However, this topic is for another note.

However, we are interested in covering the flooring with one or another paint, and if we touch on multi-colored ones, in this case, during the period of our grandparents, oil paint from natural products was definitely used. In most situations, paint was made from ocher, and the most common color was blood-chestnut (red).

The problem is that this kind of tone itself, according to the judgment of the paint manufacturers of these pores, had the ability to perfectly hide dirt in the floor.

  • Dispersion acrylic paints allow the wood flooring to breathe.
  • Until now, there are oil paints on store shelves, they are sold at an affordable price, the staining procedure is quite simple. A tough coating that forms as a result of painting on wood flooring. Provided will serve you for about five years.
  • Dispersion acrylic paint has several positive sides over others: a high vapor permeability coefficient (the ability to "breathe"), solvents are not included in the composition in any way (thus the least type of fire hazard, toxicity is absent), the greatest adhesion to wood, lightness and practicality of the floor covering, optimal protection from ultraviolet radiation, with proper care, the operation period reaches twenty years.

Attention: If, after an indefinite period of time, you wish to repaint the flooring with a different type of paint and varnish material, then try a water-acrylic solution. This mixture will give the minimum "opposition" from among absolutely any paints and varnishes!

  • Opaque enamels have every chance of being applied due to their own low cost and simplicity, but besides this they perfectly overcome moisture, having a powerful waterproof quality.
  • Enamel paint generally dries faster on wood flooring.
  • The enamel adheres well to the plane of the log, not penetrating in any way into its texture. As a result, the period of operation of the wood coating is significantly increased. Another advantage of this type of paint and varnish material is the rapid drying period.

Concrete flooring

Let's try to figure out how to choose a color for flooring made of concrete slabs (see Painting a concrete floor: do it yourself), because this kind of plane needs to be painted over according to most circumstances. In this case, do not forget that dust formation will regularly form in the unpainted concrete surface.

Do not forget, in addition to this, that the concreted slabs not provided with paints and varnishes have every chance of being a factor in injuries (it is possible to stumble).

Attention: Here you will find the answer how to paint the self-leveling floor. When it comes to concrete, dye flaking will be the main factor. Therefore, before painting, it will definitely be necessary to prime the plane, only then the coating will hold.

  • In general, epoxy paint is used more often, which is thus called "epoxy". Causing an already delicate coating into the concrete coating provides you with an increase in wear resistance many times over (it is more correct to apply paint in 2 layers in general: first, a thin layer is applied, which must be given time to dry in about a day, then covered with a second layer of enormous thickness) ...
  • Epoxy paint has a waterproof effect and increases the degree of overload. The most resistant to the influence of chemical elements, in addition, it has excellent adhesion to the concrete surface.
  • Epoxy paints are suitable in open space for concrete floors.
  • Let's say you need to cover the flooring in an open place, in which case you can pick up directly this kind of paint and varnish material.
  • It should be noted separately the innovative concreted paints and varnishes, which are presented from European manufacturers. They are able to withstand heavy loads. Such colors are more suitable for industrial zones, but here it should be emphasized that Europeans paint the floors in stadiums, where one of the drawbacks is the high price of the product.

If you decide how to paint the floor in the steam room, then there is only one question, nothing is better, because here, in addition to the humid environment, high temperature also affects and therefore any dye will not be safe. What paint to paint the floor in other materials of manufacture, you will find without any problems in the article. The main thing is not the price of the dye, the main thing is that it is safe and durable.

The floor is a fundamental element in the room, therefore, its selection and care should be taken with care. Today, nature and naturalness are valued in the interior, therefore, wood flooring is a frequent choice for living quarters. In order to preserve its properties and qualities, floor paint is most often used. When choosing it, it is necessary to be guided by the characteristics of such coatings.

Peculiarities

Paint is the most popular material for flooring, but its choice should be approached carefully, since the floor performs not only a protective function, but also a decorative one. Correctly chosen finishing material will not only improve the quality of the coating, but also advantageously highlight its structure and appearance. When choosing, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • Variety and type of tree. Since each type of wood reacts differently to paintwork, the required amount of paint depends on this;
  • Coating application conditions. For the floor inside and outside the building, different types of paint will be required;
  • Lifetime. The paint can be applied to both new wood flooring and old, but restored boards;
  • The number and composition of the previous finish. This is necessary in order to find a compatible product with the previous one;
  • Floor quality. Sometimes a preliminary finishing of the floor covering is required.

These moments will allow you to determine the type of paint, which offers many options on the market.

Views

All paint and varnish products for flooring are divided into two main types: transparent and opaque substances. Transparent - oil, varnish, impregnation, successfully emphasize the texture, and the second - directly paints, give the desired color.

The selection of paints is most extensive on store shelves, but you can order it from a supplier on the Internet. It is distinguished not only by its properties, but also by its price, which depends on the popularity of the company that produces it.

The most common types of wood floor paints are:

    Acrylic;

    Wear-resistant acrylic paint;

    Alkyd;

    Rubber;

    Oil;

    Polyurethane;

    Epoxy based colorant.

Acrylic paint is safe as it does not contain toxic ingredients and is water-based. Moreover, it is a versatile tool for floors, ceilings and walls.

Its advantages are:

  • Lack of an unpleasant specific odor;
  • It tolerates water, fire and temperature changes well. Withstands even the lowest temperature conditions;
  • High resistance to sun fading. Even after a few years, the color of the surface will not change much;
  • Dries quickly;
  • Increases the service life of the floor and emphasizes its properties;
  • Wide color palette.

It is better to apply this type of material with a spray gun, because fibers from the brush can remain on the floor. Also, the acrylic product is not easily washed off with paint brushes and a roller, so they must be thoroughly rinsed after work.

Wear-resistant acrylic paint for wood is also based on acrylic, but significantly differs in the following qualities:

  • Has the ability to absorb water vapor from the air (hygroscopicity), thereby protecting the tree from getting wet and the appearance of fungi and mold;
  • Simple application. This paint can be applied by any means - roller, brush;
  • Long service life. Even after a long time, the paint will not peel off and will not lose color;
  • Fast drying.

Among the shortcomings, one can note a specific smell in some samples and the need for constant stirring of the composition so that bubbles and stains do not appear on the surface. After the last coat of paint has dried, it is recommended that you wash the floor to give it more shine.

Alkyd coatings are almost similar in composition to acrylic, the only difference is in the absence of resin. Therefore, the surface of this paint has a beautiful gloss. The benefits also include:

  • The color remains bright and shiny even after several years;
  • Resistant to abrasion and water. Often used for rooms with high humidity (in a bathroom, bath, sauna);
  • Has no toxic substances in its composition;
  • Protects the floor from mold and mildew;
  • It has a unique ability to penetrate deep layers of the coating, making it stronger and more reliable.

In addition to the advantages, this paint also has disadvantages:

  • Unpleasant smell;
  • Flammable quickly;
  • Not resistant to abrasive detergents.

You can apply such paint in any way and with any tool.

Rubber paint is the result of modern developments and differs significantly from other types. It is mainly used indoors, but you can paint the floors on the veranda. After application, the coating feels rubbery and soft to the touch. The paint also gives shine and smoothness to the surface. The pluses also include:

  • Has the ability to penetrate deep into wood and fill cracks. This allows you to significantly increase the service life of the product;
  • Wear resistance. After application, a protective transparent film is formed, which will preserve the integrity of the floor;
  • Over time, cracks do not appear and it does not peel off the coating;
  • High resistance to sunlight, which allows you to maintain color for a long time;
  • Economical paint consumption. It is best to apply it in two coats and with a spray;
  • High resistance to temperature extremes and low temperature conditions.

Of the minuses, one can note the inability to pass air, which affects the structure and quality of the tree.

Oil paints are a popular product, as they have the following qualities:

  • High resistance to both low and high temperatures. Therefore, it can be used in an unheated house, in an apartment, and in a country house;
  • High resistance to mechanical stress. The oily substance forms a protective film on the floor, preserving its integrity;
  • After application, the surface becomes smooth;
  • Budgetary price.

There are also disadvantages to this type of paint:

  • Drying time;
  • Does not affect the deep layers of the tree;
  • Color may change during the drying period. In order to obtain a noble tone, a dye with ocher should be used. To obtain a matte effect, you can add laundry soap;
  • Over time, there is a chance of cracking and chipping.

The application of this substance requires special care. It is best to use a wide brush and not apply a second coat over the wet first coat of paint. This can lead to streaking and surface roughness.

Polyurethane paint is mainly used for finishing wooden surfaces outside the premises - the porch of a house, the floor of a terrace or veranda. Its main advantages are:

  • Penetrates deep layers of wood;
  • Withstands low and high temperatures, and their drops;
  • For its application, no preliminary surface treatment is required;
  • High resistance to moisture and water.

Among the shortcomings, it can be noted:

  • High price;
  • The presence of toxic constituents;
  • Specific smell.

Epoxy-based paint is used not only for metal or concrete, but also for wood coatings. As well as polyurethane paint, epoxy can be used for decoration both indoors and outdoors, as it withstands low temperatures well. Its advantages also include:

  • Good ability to protect the coating from mold and mildew;
  • High resistance to mechanical stress;
  • The paint is resistant to sunlight, so the surface does not fade for a long time;
  • Easy to apply.

The paint consists of two substances (resin and hardener), which must be mixed before direct application in the required quantities. This feature seems to many to be a drawback of this paint.

The disadvantages also include:

  • Surface pretreatment. Before starting work, the floor must be sanded and primed;
  • Long drying time. As a rule, for a smooth surface and bright color it is necessary to apply the paint in two coats. The second layer is applied not earlier than after 12 hours;
  • Subsequent ventilation of the room is necessary;
  • The presence of a specific smell.

Such a variety of paints on the market makes buyers wonder how to choose the right paint.

How to choose?

Correctly selected paint will allow you to beautifully design the surface and preserve it for a long time. Therefore, before buying, it is important to pay attention to the following points:

  1. What paint has been used previously on the surface. This is especially true for old coatings. If it remains, then it is necessary to choose a paint that can paint over the previous layer;
  2. Terms of use of the floor covering. So, for the balcony you will need paint that can withstand sub-zero temperatures. For a bathroom, a bath requires moisture-resistant paint;
  3. Interior Design. The color should be in harmony with the overall environment. Today, these substances are distinguished by a variety of colors, so there should be no difficulties with its selection. You can choose white, which is versatile and will suit any style;
  4. The texture and species of wood. Pine roofing requires additional protection and strength, as this breed is soft and flexible. Therefore, it is worth choosing the paint that has such qualities. The surface of beech wood initially has a glossy sheen and unusual texture, therefore it is recommended to use substances that emphasize these advantages. It is also recommended to treat the beech floor with oil impregnation before painting in order to preserve its properties;
  5. The type of paint and its properties. Transparent substances (varnish, impregnation) do not allow air to pass through well and are subject to abrasion, but at the same time add additional shine and provide protection from sunlight. Therefore, they should be applied over the paint.

After the paint is selected, it is necessary to start preparatory work.

Preparation for application

At first glance, it might seem like painting a floor is an easy and quick affair. In fact, this is a long and painstaking work, which consists of several stages:

  1. Surface preparation and priming;
  2. Paint application.

In order to prepare the surface, you must:

  • Clear the room from interior items and wash the floor. It is better to do it with soapy water or with the addition of detergents, especially for heavy dirt;
  • Clean surfaces from debris, old paint coat, as well as bumps and cracks. The sander will help remove debris and cope with floor roughness;
  • Cracks and crevices should be repaired with a special mortar or filler. Typically, the putty will require two or three coats. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous layer has completely dried;
  • Repeated cleansing. After the solution dries, it is necessary to grind it so that the surface is smooth;
  • Processing with a primer suitable for the properties of the future paint.

At this stage, preliminary preparation ends and you can start staining.

Painting

In order to paint the floor with varnish or paint, you must wait until the soil is completely dry. After that, you should protect the areas that are not stained with masking tape or paper.

How to paint an old wood floor

The theme of painting wooden surfaces cannot be called original, but for those who are going to do it for the first time, some tips may come in handy.

The floors on our terrace and also in the summer kitchen have long been in need of renovation. Ordinary planed boards are laid here. And not close, but with intervals for ventilation: this is a semi-street room, not very high above ground level.

Preparation

Preparatory work may take more time than the staining itself. First, we prepare materials and tools:

  • Floor paint. You can use any: acrylic, oil, enamel. Since our floors have already been previously covered with PF enamel, we still use it. But I would paint the new clean floorboards with odorless acrylic paint;
  • Solvent. It is added to improve the fluidity of paints and more economical consumption. I used White Spirit. In general, the type of suitable solvent is always indicated on the paint can;
  • The brushes are small for the perimeter and large for the main area. It is more convenient to use it instead, but I didn't have it;
  • Tray for paint;
  • Masking tape;
  • Gloves;
  • Stirring stick.

You may also need a stiff bristled brush or sandpaper if there are areas of peeling old paint on the surface.

First, we prepare the floors for painting:

  • It is very important to thoroughly clean all the cracks, otherwise the brush will collect all the dust and dirt from them, which will instantly mix with the paint and smear over the surface.

  • Dry cleaning is not enough; floors need to be thoroughly washed and allowed to dry.

  • Having opened the paint, it should be mixed and, if necessary, add a solvent: it is difficult to work with a thick composition, and it takes a lot of it.

  • Stir the paint again until smooth and free from streaks and color.

Dyeing

Before handling a brush, take care not to stain walls or stationary furniture with paint. To do this, stick masking tape on them around the perimeter. It is impervious to paint and can be easily removed after use without leaving any residue.

Now you can start your main work:

  • Pour some paint into the tray, in its lower deep part;

  • Take a small brush and run it around the perimeter of the room. After dipping in the paint, the excess is removed from it by pressing it against the ribbed part of the bath;

  • Then use a large brush or roller to paint over each floorboard, spreading the paint along it. You need to act with slight pressure so that the paint fills in all small defects and indentations from self-tapping screws;

  • You need to start work from the far wall and move towards the exit.

I have two exits, so I closed the door to the backyard with a bolt so that no one entered through it, and painted, backing up the stairs to the upper terrace.

The porch overlooking the garden was painted in the same way. But here the boardwalk was initially in a worse condition, so a second painting will be required.

After a day or two (it dries quickly outside), when this layer is dry, the floors will need to be washed with warm water with the addition of vinegar, and then painted again. Such washing accelerates the final drying of the paint, removes oil traces from it.

Now I should keep an eye on the cat so that J.

But what happened without the use of masking tape, forgotten in the already painted area. No matter how I tried to act carefully, when painting the plinth, it touched the walls. Now you have to wipe off these marks with a solvent. It's good that plastic is here, with such a number will not work.

Conclusion

Of course, there is nothing complicated in the described process. Any person can do this kind of work. And if you do not take the time to thoroughly clean and clean the surface from the old peeling coating, then wave a brush and compare "it was - it is now" can even be nice.

An important detail in the interior of any home is the floor covering. The floor in the house affects the overall perception of the room more than other elements, so its design is given no less importance than the arrangement of walls and ceilings. Recently, the leading positions are occupied by floorings, which, as a rule, are decorated with paint. You can paint with your own hands at home, but before starting work, all the subtleties of the process should be studied.

Peculiarities

Any type of repair work has its own characteristics, and floor painting is no exception. Most often, wood flooring is chosen as floor coverings. Before buying a paint or varnish for your floor, you need to understand the origin of the existing flooring. The material used for its manufacture is important when choosing a paint or varnish, as well as the means with which preparatory work will be carried out. You can paint the floor using acrylic, oil, wear-resistant and universal rubber paints.

It is also necessary to take into account the peculiarities of the room where the painting work is planned. The intensity of use, exposure to external factors, average temperature and humidity are very important when choosing a paint, since the service life of the painted surface will depend on its properties. If the surface itself was previously painted, then it is necessary to determine the degree of compatibility of the used paint with the new product.

If the goal is not to renew, but to apply a new layer, then you need to either prime or treat the surface with a special compound before applying the decorative layer.

How to paint?

Today, there are various types of paints and varnishes that can be selected for both wood flooring and concrete flooring. There are two types of products that can be used to cover the floor: colorless and opaque. Colorless varnishes are excellent for wood surfaces. They are durable and resistant to fading, and dry quickly. Decorative varnishes are available in a variety of colors, thanks to which a beautiful shade can be given to a wooden surface without blocking the structure of the wood. Beech, oak and other expensive floorings have a beautiful structural pattern, and a varnish with a translucent or transparent consistency will perfectly emphasize it, give it shine and protect it from moisture.

It is worth remembering that the varnish is not resistant to various mechanical damage, and therefore it is better for them not to cover surfaces in rooms with high traffic. Otherwise, it is worth applying additional impregnations.

Do not use this product on soft wood flooring (spruce, pine). It is better to treat them with paint that protects the surface as much as possible from mechanical damage.

Which paint is best?

Paints of various colors are subdivided, depending on the chemical composition, into acrylic, oil, wear-resistant and rubber:

  • Non-toxic acrylic paints, having a water base, perfectly paint over solid wood surfaces. They are quite durable (service life is about 10 years), and therefore are in high demand. The components present in the paint are not afraid of temperature extremes and high humidity, which means that the paint itself is suitable for use in rooms with no heating. When painting, there is no strong smell, and the surface with the applied paint dries quickly.
  • They are ecological and safe for the human body. rubber paints, which appeared relatively recently, but have already managed to gain popularity. They are characterized by high strength, superelasticity, water resistance and low consumption. The polymers included in the paint protect the wooden surface from fading and temperature extremes.

  • Oil paints are inexpensive and extremely common paint materials. They have a uniform consistency and are quite resistant to temperature fluctuations. Having a high viscosity, they are ideal for painting OSB panels consisting of glued chip particles. Water-based paints are not suitable for such panels, as there is a high probability of swelling and bending of the board. Cracks may form on the painted surface over time. In addition, the paint dries for a long time and has a very unpleasant odor.
  • Unlike oil species, wear-resistant paints are resistant. Surfaces with such paint are not afraid of peeling or fading. It is easy to apply a layer, and the paints dry quite quickly. Their smell is quite specific, it disappears from the room only after a few days.

Colors and decor

Gone are the days when only one color was used to paint the floor. The brown paint and several shades of it were produced specifically for wood flooring. To date, manufacturers produce a wide color palette, thanks to which you can choose absolutely any shade. Water-based paints are particularly distinguished by their color scheme. There are both ready-made options and those that can be given the desired shade using a special color tool. White paint is the base to which a certain amount of the desired color is added. In order to get the desired shade of paint, you can add several colors.

Matt varnishes also have different colors and shades. With their help, you can give any wood flooring a shade of a noble species. Coloring the floor covering can be done using one color or shade, evenly distributing the product over the entire surface. There are special stencil devices with which the surface of the old floor is transformed by applying a pattern. The technology is simple: a stencil with a cut-out pattern is applied to the floor surface, and paint is applied to the open areas.

Either a sponge or a roller can be used as a tool.

Work technology

Floor painting, like any other work, has its own technology. The final result depends on a competent and consistent approach to this type of activity. Before starting the process, you need to prepare tools that may be needed both during the preparatory work and for painting the floor:

  • The main tool for covering the flooring is the roller. Today, manufacturers produce a variety of rollers of a wide variety in size and material: foam, polyacrylic, fur, polyamide and even textured. Each species has its own purpose. For painting the floor, the best option is a fur roller bearing the VMP mark. They are produced in accordance with GOST and are the most durable in comparison with the foam rubber options, and the layer of paint applied by them will lie flat.
  • For uniform absorption of paint, it is better to purchase a special container with two-level planes. The agent is poured into one half, and the other serves to squeeze the roller.

Surface preparation

Preparatory work is carried out based on the condition of the coating surface. If the flooring is new, then sand the surface well with a squeegee, then remove dust and debris. If the coating is old, then first the paint layer is removed using either a mechanical (using a building hair dryer) or chemical (solvent) cleaning method. The resulting cracks are putty, after drying, the surface is leveled.

If the coating will be varnished, then there is no need for a primer. Such floorings are treated with special impregnations that protect the wood from mold, mildew and accidental fire. To prepare the floor for painting, use drying oil or a special primer, which gives the flooring antiseptic properties and prepares the surface.

A smooth and even floor with good adhesion properties will greatly facilitate the adhesion of the paint to the flooring.

How to paint?

After preparation, you can start painting the floor in the apartment. There is a certain sequence of this stage of work. Before staining, thorough mixing of the composition in a jar is required to remove clots, while this procedure is carried out regardless of the color (black, white, colored) of the paint. Then you can start painting the surface adjacent to the walls, starting from the opposite side of the entrance. It is more convenient to do this with a small brush, since you cannot thoroughly paint over every corner with a roller.

After applying a layer around the perimeter, you can start painting the central part of the floor. The applied layer of paint should dry completely, and only after that you can start installing the skirting boards. In order not to stain the wallpaper or other facing materials on the walls, you need to close the part adjacent to the baseboards with masking tape or other improvised means. Next, you can start painting the skirting boards with a narrow brush. After the first layer has dried, a second layer is applied to the skirting boards. After waiting for the allotted time for it to dry on the baseboards, you can start applying paint to the central part of the surface.

When the painted surface is completely dry, you need to prepare the floor for use by thoroughly washing it.
