We glue the ceiling tiles: lessons, video, technology. How to glue ceiling tiles on an uneven ceiling Preparatory work before installing ceiling tiles

The characteristics and cost of each type are very different, so we will consider each in detail.

Manufactured by stamping from expanded polystyrene blocks. As a rule, it is light in weight, low in density and 6 to 8 mm thick.

Advantages:

    cheapness;

    installation is not a problem;

    can be painted over with water-based paint.

Disadvantages:

    fragility;

    instability to moisture;

    low noise absorption;

    easily absorbs dirt and is difficult to clean.

Injection tile

Such a tile is made by sintering polystyrene foam. It has a clearer texture and patterns, while the thickness increases in comparison with the pressed one by almost 2 times - 9-14cm.

Advantages:

    good noise absorption;

    resistant to moisture;

  • tolerates painting well.

Disadvantages:

    much more expensive than pressed;

    available only in white, if you want a different color - paint.

Important! When choosing, pay special attention to the edges, they should be clear, even, not crumble.

Extruded tiles

It is made by pressing from a polystyrene strip, which in turn is formed by pressing.

Advantages:

    high strength and sound absorption;

    variety of colors and patterns;

    easy to clean;

    recovering from deformation;

Disadvantages:

    high cost

    the seamy side has an uneven surface, which complicates the installation process;

    the textured pattern will be poorly expressed due to the manufacturing technology.

Calculation of ceiling tiles

Adhesive selection

After calculating the number of tiles, you need to decide which glue to use.

Polyvinyl acetate- such glue is used for ceiling tiles, but it is not worth choosing it with confidence. The consumption of glue will be much higher than other options. It is best used on a perfectly flat surface.

Important! The disadvantage of this glue is that it dries for a long time.

"Liquid Nails"- wins when gluing tiles on an uneven surface. Due to its density, it allows, as it were, to level the ceiling.

Important! Check the composition carefully, as these adhesives often contain solvents that can easily corrode the tiles.

Universal polymer adhesives- this includes "Titan", "Eko - Naset", "Master". Pretty good in terms of fixation.

The downside is a pungent smell, it is better to pre-arrange ventilation in the room. It dries for a long time in comparison with liquid nails.

How to properly glue ceiling tiles

Before starting gluing, we need to directly prepare the ceiling and tiles.

Tile preparation

Like many other materials, ceiling tiles react to changing climatic conditions. Therefore, after the purchase, be sure to bring it into the room where the gluing will be done, open the package and let it brew there for 24 hours.

Thoroughly remove the old coating, if whitewash remains, the ceiling should be as flat and strong as possible. If the surface differences are too large, they are needed.

When all the irregularities are eliminated, the ceiling must be primed and allowed to dry.

You have already decided on the method of laying in a straight line or diagonally.

It is better to start the process of gluing the ceiling tiles from the center of the ceiling or from the chandelier. To find the center, you can pull two strands diagonally from corner to another corner, or draw lines with a marker. Also, through the center point, two lines perpendicular to the walls should be drawn or also pull the thread.

Laying the first row of tiles

The gluing of the first rows should be as even as possible, since it depends on them how smoothly the remaining rows will lay.

The glue is applied to special projections on the seamy side of the tile. Alternatively, it is applied in the middle of the tiles and at each corner, as well as on the ceiling.

It should be noted that if you have chosen "Titan" glue, then before laying the tiles should be kept for 10-15 minutes.

For porous ceilings, apply a thick layer of adhesive!

Advice! If you need to hold the glue on the tile, you can apply it to several tiles at once, so you won't have stagnation while waiting.

We glue the first tile

The first tile must be glued so that one of the corners is exactly at the center point. Guide the edges of the tiles along the threads or lines you have outlined. As a result, all 4 tiles will converge at the central point.

Press down firmly on the tiles, if you have chosen pressed tiles, it is better to use some kind of cloth so as not to stain the tiles. Remove excess adhesive immediately with a sponge or cloth.

Advice! If you are starting not from the center, but from the chandelier, then you need to cut off the edges of the tiles. Subsequently, this hole will be closed with a plate of the chandelier.

Second and next rows

Important! You need to focus on the triangular arrows on the back of the tile - they should look in the same direction.

As a rule, you will have to adjust the last rows to the desired size. Use a construction knife to trim. If there are gaps between the wall and the tiles, don't worry, it will hide it all.

Cover up the cracks

To make the ceiling tile look like a whole, you should fill all tile joints with sealant. You can level the sealant just with your finger, it is easily washed off. You can clean the excess tiles with a damp cloth.

Advice! Better to use silicone sealant, it is waterproof.

Completion of gluing the ceiling tiles

Important! When finished gluing, you need to close the windows and doors tightly to exclude air movement.

After the glue has dried, you can hang the chandelier in place. And start gluing the baseboards.

Also, after gluing, you can tile, once again we remind you that the choice of paint depends on the type of tile.

How to glue ceiling tiles to whitewash

There are two ways of gluing ceiling tiles to whitewash:

The first way

Apply a layer of primer over the old whitewash. Once the primer has been absorbed, it will help the whitewash to adhere better to the ceiling. You can start gluing the ceiling tiles only after the primer is completely dry.

Second way

If it is not possible to completely peel off the whitewash, a small layer still remains, then apply a thick layer of glue to the tile and ceiling. Press the tiles against the ceiling for a couple of minutes. When the glue begins to dry in this state, it will better adhere the thin layer of whitewash to the ceiling.

Home renovation is a serious test for all tenants. One of the steps in this complex process is the gluing of the ceiling tiles. The use of foam ceiling trim is a budget option. But the assortment on the market is large, so everyone will choose a suitable type for themselves in color and design. If there is a desire to preserve such a repair for a long time, competent actions are needed in the gluing process.

Preparation

How to properly glue the ceiling tiles? This is the main question that interests everyone who has decided to carry out repairs on their own. It is better to decorate the ceiling until the walls are tiled.

Provided that there will be no other change in the interior, you need to hide everything under polyethylene so as not to spoil it. The use of tiles is permissible on any surface. In order for the tile to fix securely, it is worth preparing:

  1. The chandelier is removed.
  2. The old finish is removed and the entire perimeter is checked for the reliability of each element present. The corners must be carefully checked (this is usually the weakest area).
  3. If large cracks appear afterwards, they need to be covered.
  4. After drying, use an adhesive primer.
  5. The evenness of the ceiling is assessed. If there are drops and convex zones, you need to level them using a putty. This is done for large irregularities. In other cases, the tile will hide everything.

How to glue ceiling tiles diagonally with your own hands? Anyone can do this, and even on simple lime on the ceiling, but provided there is no shedding. In any case, each surface is pre-primed with an adhesive for reliability and durability.

What kind of ceiling tiles can you find in the store?

So, we will have to get good ceiling tiles and quality glue. How to make a choice? Before going shopping, everyone should know that tiles are:

  • Pressed. It is not too dense, and it is stamped, so it often comes across defective.
  • Extruded. Such tiles are covered with a film. In the manufacturing process, polystyrene is used. This option is tight and sleek. They often create imitations for other materials - wood, marble, etc. A big plus is moisture resistance.
  • Injection. Such models have patterns, as they are produced in a special way, the thickness reaches 12 millimeters.
  • Seamless. This is the most expensive finishing material in this series. But it looks beautiful, since there are no joints at all.

Once the desired type is selected, you need to understand how to glue. Due attention will have to be paid to quality:

  • It is necessary to inspect the packaging with tiles so that the corners are even, otherwise problems will arise when pasting.
  • The tiles should not peel off at the edges. It is better to choose one that has small grains in its composition.
  • Whenever there is a pattern, it is important that it is clear and symmetrical.
  • Basically, companies produce standard parts 50x50 cm. Following from this size and knowing the ceiling area, it is easy to calculate the required amount of material.

It is required to buy material with a margin, but with a small margin (10 percent). Each batch of the same tile may vary slightly. And if not enough, it will be difficult to find a similar one.

What kind of glue is right?

Not only the speed of finishing, but also the durability depends on which adhesive is purchased. It is necessary to choose a not too thick consistency. But too liquid will not work. Such a mass will be convenient when applied where a thick layer is required, and in other places with a thin layer. Much will do:

  • Putty.
  • Liquid Nails.
  • Moment assembly glue.

You need to make a choice depending on the surface of the ceiling. If it's all the same, then a suitable option is liquid nails. In case of drops, putty is used. To hide the seams, you need skirting boards.

How to start?

Before answering the question of how to glue the ceiling tiles, you need to make a sketch - create a ceiling diagram, reflect on it the method of applying the finishing material:

  • Parallel.
  • Diagonally.
  • Staggered.

To mark everything, you need a tape measure and a cord. Do not rely on clarity, otherwise it will turn out ugly. The presence of irregularities will ruin the view. How is each fixing done? It is believed that the methods of how to properly glue the ceiling tiles have their own algorithm.

Parallel execution

The beginning is the corner that catches the eye first. The process is carried out in several stages:

  • The adhesive is applied on all sides from the inside of the tile and in the middle. Superfluous is not needed, otherwise he will act and will make the joints uneven.
  • Press down on the tile and iron it evenly around its perimeter so that the adhesive mass is distributed.
  • The next one joins and only after that it is pressed. Everything must be done carefully, without breaking symmetry.
  • Then we perform the same actions on the area of the ceiling.
  • After the complete parts are glued, you need to measure and glue the rest. It is convenient to cut with a clerical knife. Walls can be uneven, so it is best to pre-measure.

Diagonal drawing

How to glue ceiling tiles? Different ways have the same origin. You need to glue from the center of the room. Further - work according to a simple plan:

  • The markup and the fastening process itself. The first tile is set so that the corners are in the middle of the line.
  • The second is placed along the marked marking lines.
  • After that, in order - the rest of the components.
  • The necessary elements are cut along the edges.

At the end of the work, the plinth is glued and the remnants of the glue are removed. It was already noted earlier: seamless tiles are the most convenient in the installation process. After application, nothing extra is required. Other options involve looking closely at the perimeter. If there are gaps between the components of the finishing material, then they are removed using a sealant. It does not react to water and temperature rise. When filling the existing holes, it is leveled, and the excess is removed.

How to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands in a checkerboard pattern? To do this, after marking, the parts are fixed strictly along the axis. And the extreme row - from the prepared measured segments. To make the ceiling surface look beautiful, you need to apply a building level. But it’s not that easy. Therefore, experts say that it will be easier to initially remove flaws and defects with a spatula.

Depending on the selected adhesive, the process of applying it to the tile surface is also built. On the back of the finishing material there are special protrusions for the adhesive mass. Application is done with dotted lines or full coat. If the selected agent is too liquid, then after spreading on the surface, you need to wait two minutes and proceed to installation.

With the right approach to the process of fixing the tiles, you will get a high-quality result. Below we will provide small tips to help you do everything quickly and well:

  • In order for the work with the finishing material to be easy, you need to leave the tiles in the room for about a couple of hours. She should be at room temperature. After that, you can proceed with the installation.
  • It turns out a beautiful combination if the tiles are assembled from different colors. Any convenient method of gluing can be used for this.
  • According to the experts, the best adhesive material is liquid nails. They are used with an assembly gun.
  • If you decide to paste over the ceiling, this is done immediately. Do not stop, otherwise gaps and notches may form.
  • When the gaps are smeared in some places, then if the sealant gets in, it is immediately removed with a wet cloth. Because after that it will be difficult to do it carefully.
  • In order for the tile to be firmly fixed, it is not held with hands, but with a bar.
  • To see the distribution of the adhesive on the tile, it is better to take it in color.
  • If foam tiles are used, then after it it will not be possible to cover it with water-based paint, since peeling will go.

Conclusion

So, we looked at different ways. How to glue the ceiling tiles is now clear. Anyone can cope with gluing tiles to the ceiling. The main thing is to prepare what is necessary before starting so that the process does not stand still.

The beautifully finished ceiling attracts the eyes of visitors, makes the room interesting and unique. One way to achieve this effect is to use ceiling tiles. Using minimal funds, you can quickly transform any room. But before you start gluing the tiles, you need to carefully prepare for this.

Ceiling surface preparation

Ceiling surface preparation will save you from the possible difficulties associated with installing tiles. To get high quality work, and the result is durable, follow these instructions:

  1. If there is old whitewash on the ceiling, paint, cladding, plaster that is crumbling, wallpaper, etc. - remove so that nothing interferes with the adhesion of the tile.
  2. After cleaning the surface of the ceiling, cracks, depressions, irregularities, etc. may appear. Use a putty to fix defects. It is ideal for leveling the ceiling, as well as for grouting damage of any complexity.
  3. When the putty is completely dry (after 12 hours), prime the ceiling. Apply several coats at intervals to dry. The primer improves adhesion and the tile adheres firmly.

In some cases, the ceiling is not cleaned of whitewashing, but immediately proceeds to priming. So, they do it under one condition - the lime layer is in a fairly good condition. This method does not guarantee a durable result, but it can be applied as a quick cosmetic repair option.

Determination of the ceiling area

  1. The ceiling area is very easy to determine. To do this, measure its length and width using a tape measure, and then multiply the numbers obtained. This method is applicable if the room is in the form of an even rectangle.
  2. But there are rooms that have cut corners or L-shaped. To measure the area of a custom ceiling, draw a plan on a piece of paper, indicating the dimensions of all sides. Then divide the drawing into even rectangular sections. Determine the area of each rectangle and add the data. As a result, you will get the total ceiling area.

Example:
You made the necessary measurements of the ceiling and received the following data: width = 4 m, length = 5 m. Multiply these numbers: 4x5 = 20 m2. Thus, the ceiling area is 20 m2.

Calculation of the amount of material

  1. To understand how much material you need to buy, first determine the area of one tile. This is done in the same way as with the ceiling. Most of the tiles are standard size - 50x50. Multiply this data: 0.50 x 0.50 = 0.25 m2. As a result, the area of one tile is 0.25 m2.
  2. Now you have the following data: 20 m2 - ceiling area and 0.25 m2 - tile area. Divide these numbers: 20 m2 / 0.25 m2 = 80 pieces. As a result, it turns out that you need to buy 80 tiles for a room of 20 m2.

But take your time to go to the store and buy just that amount of material. The fact is that during the work, errors may occur that will lead to the breakdown of a certain number of tiles. Considering possible losses, buy material with a margin - 10% more.

There are many ways to install ceiling tiles. For example, you can arrange tiled squares in a checkerboard pattern or diagonally, combine different colors to create simple geometric shapes. There are a lot of options, but any method requires accurate marking.

Tiles are usually laid from the middle (the exception is rooms with a small area, where the installation is carried out from the corners), so first determine the central part of the ceiling. To do this, draw the diagonals using threads. Then make perpendicular lines going through the center. Such markings are universal and will help you arrange the tiles in any convenient way.

The main ways of laying tiles:

  1. Diagonal. This option is often used and is suitable for any room. The drawn lines allow you to control the laying of tiles in a diagonal direction. The result is smooth and beautiful.
  2. Chess order. To create the effect of a checkerboard field, tiles of two colors are used. They begin to glue them from the central point of the ceiling, so that the edges are parallel to the walls. The staggered tiles conceal well the imperfection of the ceiling surface.
  3. Snake. In this version, two matching or contrasting shades of tiles are used. Glue starts from the center, creating a graphic image of a snake, twisted into a spiral. If you cannot find a material of a suitable color, use a water-based paint.

Ceiling tile laying rules

  1. You cannot glue tiles to whitewash. This will cause the lime layers to peel off over time, and with them the tiles. Before laying, you need to clean the ceiling from chalk and prime it.
  2. The tiles are glued starting from the center of the ceiling or the location of the chandelier. It is necessary to control that the rows close to the walls have the same width.
  3. Buy tiles with a margin. For ceilings with projections of different heights, additional material will be required. Also, during the installation process, it is easy to damage or spoil the tiles.

Installation of tiles

After painstaking preparation, a new stage of renovation begins - the installation of tiles. The quality of the appearance of the ceiling depends on the work done correctly. Follow the instructions below and you will succeed.

  1. Pick a few tiles and take a close look at each. They must not have burrs at the edges. If you see these, cut them off, otherwise they will interfere with making the joints minimal.
  2. Apply the adhesive to the material. Distribute it around the perimeter, stepping back from the edge by one centimeter, and also make several strips in the center. Allow 1-2 minutes for the glue to thicken.
  3. Attach the first tile to the ceiling, aligning with the diagonal and horizontal marks. Use a cloth to smooth it out for better adhesion.
  4. Glue the next tiles side by side in the same way, creating a central square.
  5. Navigate the laid tiles to glue the rest. Do not forget about the markup, periodically leveling the material.
  6. When approaching the edge of the ceiling, you need to trim the tiles. Try it on first, then cut it. Try to trim so that the gap between the edge of the tile and the wall is minimal. The plinth will then cover it.
  7. After completing the installation, allow the glue to dry well.

Putty joints

  1. While performing the work, it is possible that it was not possible to make the seams with high quality. As a result, the ceiling is visible between the joints of the tiles. Fix the imperfections with a white sealant. It is sold in cans, and is equipped with a special elongated nozzle, with which it is easy to penetrate the crevices. You will need a gun to work with the sealant.
  2. All you need to do is gently squeeze out an even layer of white compound between the joints. The sealant closes the gaps and at the same time reinforces the tiles on the ceiling.

Ceiling tile painting

  1. After completing the repair of defects with seams, you can leave everything as it is. But, if you want to decorate the surface, supplement it with various shades, then the most affordable way is to paint the tiles.
  2. As a coloring agent, you can use water-based compositions based on acrylic or latex. They do not emit a strong odor and are resistant to wet cleaning. But first prepare the surface of the tiles by applying a coat of primer.
  3. For painting, it is better to use a roller with a foam rubber surface. It will help to apply an even coat of paint. The principle of operation is the same as when painting wallpaper. To keep the dye composition well, apply at least two coats. Thus, it will turn out to make a unique geometric pattern that will surprise any visitor.

Any housewife knows that it is important not only to be able to glue tiles beautifully, but also to maintain them in proper condition. The tiled ceiling needs regular maintenance, this will extend the service life and keep the original novelty.

During the period of operation, dust gradually accumulates on the tiles. The result is a blackened surface that is unpleasant to look at. You can be flooded with neighbors from above, if you do not take timely action, rust spots will appear on the tiles that cannot be removed.

To avoid all these problems and not to re-glue the tiles, follow a few simple tips:

  1. Dry clean once a month using a vacuum cleaner or a fluffy brush.
  2. Carry out a wet cleaning every two months using a special mop.
  3. Do not use solutions that contain corrosive substances. It is safe to use dish detergents for cleaning.
  4. Clean areas with patterns with a sponge or soft cloth soaked in solution.

After each wet cleaning, moisture remains on the surface of the tiles (especially in hard-to-reach recesses), which must be wiped off. It is convenient to use paper napkins for this. Wipe the surface and patterns thoroughly to avoid wet streaks.

Ceiling tiles are glued quite easily, so everyone can cope with this task with minimal experience. The main thing is to prepare the surface well and make the markup correctly. The result is not long in coming. You will end up with a room with a unique ceiling that no one else has. Remember to maintain it by regularly dusting it. And you will be able to admire the result for many years!

Styrofoam ceiling tiles are the most common, affordable way to renovate a ceiling. Everyone tries to approach it responsibly and individually. Before gluing the ceiling tiles, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work so that a beautiful ceiling covering, with an original finish, will please the eye for many years. Choosing a finishing option, everyone tries to approach it responsibly and individually. He tries to familiarize himself with the varieties of this material, the rules for calculating the required amount, what glue to glue, as well as some of the nuances of combining tiles with the interior of the room.

Ceiling tile types

In the construction market, ceiling tiles are represented by the following varieties, which differ in the methods of their production:

  1. Pressed ceiling tiles are made of polystyrene blocks by stamping. Finished product thickness min - 6 mm, max - 8 mm.
  2. Extruded blocks are produced from polystyrene strip by pressing. They have a shiny, smooth surface. The plates can be structured like a marble slab, a cut of a tree trunk and other natural materials.
  3. For the manufacture of injector ceiling tiles, a method is used in which the raw material is sintered. As a result, the product has a regular shape with a deep pattern. Its thickness is from 9, but not more than 14 mm.

Selection of ceiling tiles by physical parameters

In order to properly glue the tiles for the ceiling, during the purchase, you need to pay special attention to the geometry of the product. If a tile is selected in squares, then all its corners must correspond to the required parameters, that is, equal to 90º. The slightest deviation in the future will lead to the formation of uneven seams. The corners of the ceiling tiles must not be rounded or pinched.

Another indicator when choosing a ceiling tile is the material from which it is made. When buying polystyrene tiles, you need to make sure that the edges do not crumble, and all the grains are the same in size. Higher quality is considered to be one with a particularly fine grain size. Expanded polystyrene plates should not break under their own weight if held at any of the corners while suspended. The selected ceiling tile should have a clear pattern. No flaws are allowed, any minor inaccuracy or dent will immediately attract attention.

Calculation of the required amount of material and the choice of adhesive

After choosing the type of ceiling tile according to its physical parameters and external design, it is necessary to determine how many tiles will be required for the entire ceiling area. More experienced owners immediately buy 10-15% more in case of rejection due to broken corners or mistakes during pruning. In general, the calculation is not difficult. It is necessary to know the area of the ceiling and the size of each element. Typically, ceiling tiles are produced with the dimensions of the side faces 50-50 cm. If the dimensions of the ceiling are not a multiple of the length of the side of the tiles, then during finishing there will be gaps along the edges of the ceiling. Therefore, when calculating such a nuance must be taken into account.

An experienced craftsman's advice: If you want to save on glue, it is better to use transparent glue with a thinner “rubber” base instead of liquid nails. Its consumption is significantly lower. But for a strong fixation, be sure to dry the glue already applied to the tile a little.

Having calculated the required number of tiles, you need to decide what kind of glue to glue. Many people use "Titan", "Econaset", "Liquid nails", "Moment". They adhere well to all surfaces and dry quickly. After gluing, the tiles adhere firmly. Only for this it is necessary to press it against the ceiling for a few seconds.

Work order

Many owners of apartments and private houses prefer to glue the ceiling tiles with their own hands. Therefore, it is important for them to know that work must begin with marking the center of the finishing area. To do this, from diagonally located corners, you need to stretch two threads. Their intersection is the desired center. If there is a chandelier in the room, then you can start work from this point. In this case, the docking angles at the luminaire wire are slightly cut off. As a result, they will be closed with a curly glass of the chandelier rod.

Many start working from one of the walls and lay the tiles row by row. This option is the simplest and fastest. But there is also a small nuance here. It is better to lay the first row from the wall opposite the window or front door. Then the gaps that are closed by partial fragments will not be so noticeable.

Before proceeding with the sticker, the ebb around the edges of the product must be carefully cut off. In this case, the surface of the ceiling will turn out to be perfectly flat, without seams. It is also necessary to strictly observe the symmetry of the pattern at the joints of the tiles. The slightest deviation violates the entire integrity and beauty of the finish.

There are relatively many options for the location of the ceiling tiles relative to the walls of the room. The most common are parallel and diagonal with respect to the edges of the intersection of walls and ceilings. You can choose from plain, color and combination tiles. Of the combined styling options, the following are most often practiced:

  • alternating or intersecting diagonals,
  • staggered
  • snake
  • along the perimeter of the ceiling or in its center, etc.

At the end of the work, skirting boards are installed around the entire perimeter. They are glued with the same glue as the tile itself.

Options for gluing ceiling tiles to whitewash

We will glue directly to the whitewash, so you should choose one of two ways:

  • The first is that a primer is applied over the old whitewash. It is absorbed into the layer of the old coating and adheres to the main surface of the ceiling. Then you need to wait until the primer is completely dry and start finishing.
  • The second method involves partial scraping of the falling off whitewashed layer with a spatula. As a result, a thicker layer of glue is applied to the seamy surface of the tile, and it is pressed for several minutes to the gluing site. The glue is absorbed through a thin layer of whitewash remaining on the ceiling and sets to the overlap.

How to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands: video instructions

Ceiling renovation is a laborious and costly process. In addition to tiles, you can arrange tension and suspended structures, mirror panels of various configurations and sizes. Here everything is decided by the financial capabilities and the owner's fantasies.

    I just peeled off the whitewash where the glue will be applied. I bought superglue (putty glue sold by sellers proved to be so reliable in operation). I smeared them only the places of the sticker at five points, pressed it to the ceiling and that's it. The tile holds. I did not close the seams - there was no great need. Then the ceiling plinth - that's all. The ceiling is pleasing to the eye. Better than any whitewash. And faster and cheaper than suspended and stretch ceilings.

    My husband and I glued the tiles to the ceiling in the living room on our own. Now I already know what to look for. An important note - it is important to process the seams with the correct material. We had to take silicone right away, but we confused it and took white glue. As a result, our seams turned yellow after drying, the ceiling looked terrible. The only solution was to paint the ceiling with paint to close the seams.

Today, there are many ways to renovate a ceiling, which involve the use of a wide variety of types of coatings. One of the least costly and, in view of this, very common solutions, is the gluing with polystyrene ceiling tiles. Its cost is low, and the decoration method itself is light and simple to perform. And so much so that even a beginner who knows how to glue ceiling tiles only theoretically, it can independently create a very interesting coverage.

Stages of stickers

The process of finishing a ceiling with decorative ceiling tiles includes:

  • Selection of materials: decorative tiles, glue
  • Base surface preparation
  • Flow markup
  • Bonding tiles.

We select materials

The most popular is traditional polystyrene foam tiles. It is produced in the form of squares 50x50 cm and rectangles 100x16.5 cm. There are three types of expanded polystyrene plates on the market for the installation of the so-called "glued" ("glued", "glued") ceiling:

  • Stamped tiles up to 8 mm thick - with a loose porous surface, fragile, low strength, but the cheapest. It is not recommended to wash it.
  • Extruded (laminated) tiles with an absolutely smooth surface protected by a waterproof dust-repellent film - elastic, the most durable and durable. It comes in different colors, with patterns, structured under a cut of wood, fabric, marble slab.
  • Injection (cast) tiles are thick (9–14 mm) products of the correct shape, exceptionally white, with a relief pattern or with a smooth surface, allowing you to create a “seamless” ceiling. The imitation of stucco molding looks especially rich. Allows painting.

When choosing one or another type of decorative tiles for the ceiling, the category of the room should be taken into account. For the kitchen, you can use laminate flooring.

Attention! For rooms with high humidity, only extruded tiles with a water-repellent coating are suitable.

Now about the glue. So how to glue ceiling tiles allowed on any strong absorbent surface, you can use one of the special adhesives on sale in a huge range. Preference should be given to the polymeric assembly compounds recommended in the instructions for the material. Glue "Liquid nails" and other fast-drying adhesives that adhere well to various base surfaces are also suitable.

Expert advice: To prevent glue spots from showing through thin colored ceiling tiles, use transparent glue such as Titanium.

Surface preparation

High-quality finishing is possible only on condition of a relatively flat (pits / bumps no more than 5 mm), well-prepared surface. First of all, you should wash off or in some other way remove the whitewash, clean the ceiling from old finishing materials (wallpaper, tiles), peeling plaster, fill in deep caverns and places of significant differences between the floor slabs.

It is important! To strengthen the loose ceiling and improve the quality of adhesion, it is advisable to treat the base surface with a primer.

Ceiling tile placement

Of the existing options for the arrangement of slabs on the ceiling, parallel and diagonal laying is most often used. You can glue plain, colored ceiling tiles, their combinations. For the combined version, more complex sticker methods are better suited: snake, "checkerboard", alternating / intersecting diagonals, along the perimeter, in the center, etc.

Ceiling markings

The prepared dry surface must be marked. To do this, you need to determine the point from which the installation will begin. Typically, this is the geometric center of the square. It is very simple to calculate it: it is enough to beat off the diagonals with two ropes stretched in opposite corners. The point of their intersection corresponds to the desired center. Usually there is a chandelier hanging there. If the location of the lamp does not coincide with the center, it is better to take it as the starting point of work.

In the case of parallel laying, two lines are drawn at right angles through the center parallel to the walls. It is along them that the first and three other central tiles are aligned, joining the corners at the starting point. If an electrical wire is brought out there, their corners will need to be cut off a little. Then they will be hidden under the lamp or glass of the chandelier rod, or under the ceiling rosette.

It is very important to properly align the first rows, since they determine how even the subsequent ones will be.

Before how to stick ceiling tiles, it must be kept for some time (up to 15 minutes) in accordance with the instructions for use of the glue. In order not to waste time waiting, it is better to immediately apply the glue to several tiles. Depending on the composition, the mastic is placed in the center and corners of the tiles (in most cases) or on specially designed projections completely or pointwise, and possibly also on the ceiling. When gluing the tile, you need to hold it for a few seconds, pressing it tightly against the ceiling and at the same time not allowing it to deform.

While working, do not forget that only strict adherence to the symmetry of the drawing will allow you to create a beautiful integral picture. Before gluing from the tiles, it is advisable to cut off the ebbs located at the edges. This will allow you to form a solid ceiling array, without prominent seams. To prevent moisture and dirt from getting into the cracks, they are filled with silicone sealant, leveled with a trowel (you can even use your fingers), and the excess is removed with a damp cloth. Thanks to this procedure, they achieve a monolithic coating and block the path of moisture, thereby preventing the appearance of streaks and stains.

If not entirely clear how to glue ceiling tiles from a central point or you don't want to fool around with calculations, you can start editing from a corner. Many people do this, laying the tiles row by row along one of the walls: it is both easier and faster.

With any installation method, the last rows, as a rule, have to be trimmed, and the gaps should be closed with a ceiling molding or baseboard.

A little trick: if you don't want the fragments of the slabs of the last row to be conspicuous, lay the first row against the wall opposite the door or window.

Finishing is completed by gluing a ceiling rosette with a cut-out hole and installing skirting boards around the perimeter of the ceiling. They are fixed with the same glue that was used for the ceiling tiles. To avoid drafts, doors and windows are kept closed until the glue is dry.
