Tips to help update your kitchen set. Do-it-yourself kitchen furniture repair How to restore a kitchen set

It takes ~4 minutes to read

The old set is adjusted to the size of the kitchen, everyone is already used to it. But here's the problem: the facades are dilapidated, the hinges are loose. It is safe to say that such furniture will last for a very long time if the plywood has not exfoliated or the chipboard has not swelled from getting wet. In this article we will tell you how to update an old kitchen set with your own hands.

Current repairs are carried out according to the plan:

  • strengthening or replacing the loops (sometimes the loop has to be rearranged to newly drilled nests),
  • sealing cracks with subsequent painting, pasting with self-adhesive film,
  • decoration of facades in connection with the new concept of the kitchen,
  • complete replacement of the countertop or thickening it over the old one.

The set is in need of maintenance and repair. The main destroyer of kitchen sets is not time, but incorrect installation. A curved floor leads to skewed doors, loosening of fastening screws. Even before decorating the facades, all cabinets and cabinets must be checked with a horizontal plane.

How to glue a kitchen set with self-adhesive film

The update method is suitable for a headset made of laminate. Careful preparation of surfaces will ensure a snug fit of the film.

It is not necessary to take up gluing right away, it is necessary to perform the following preparatory work in the exact sequence:

  1. We remove the doors, inspect against the light. We scrape off the bumps of dried fat, wipe with acetone or white spirit;
  2. We put the peeled edges in place by gluing;
  3. We rub the potholes with a fine sandpaper, remove the dust with a vacuum cleaner, apply a thin layer of acrylic putty. After drying, we sand, prime with building soil.
  4. Deeply damaged areas should be cut out, outlining the place according to the template of the inserted patch. The insert can be a bottle cap, wood veneer, thin plywood. Then do the work of the three above points.
  5. The best fit will give varnishing. An important process for a light film - every flaw is visible on it;
  6. Sticking starts from the edge of the door (or along the edge of the drawer). Therefore, it must be clean and absolutely straight.

Calculating the area of the purchased film according to the area of the surfaces to be glued is not suitable. It is necessary to decide on the sample, based on its width, draw on paper each detail to be restored, on a scale of 1: 10. Cuts, overlays will be immediately visible and will not last long. We proceed from full cuts, put up with the inevitable remainder.

The subtleties of the case

  • The pattern "wood texture" horizontally and vertically on adjacent surfaces looks unnatural. It is better to choose a single direction for all facades.
  • "Granite crumb" requires less careful preparation, but mother-of-pearl will give out any roughness.
  • The film must be glued from the wrong side, grabbing the top and bottom edges, leaving the side edges to complete.
  • It is impossible to pierce the self-adhesive on the tubercles with a needle: dirt and moisture will accumulate in the punctures, then the tubercles will increase.
  • Very serrated edges can be leveled by gluing a PVC construction corner on them. From the corner, the film will lie more evenly. By placing even chips under the corner, you can adjust the gap distortions.

Replacing the facades of old furniture

We unscrew the old facades, remove them, take measurements of the pedestal or hanging cabinet. We check the corners with a square. We eliminate existing distortions by laying corner clamps. Only from the newly restored corners can the exact size of the new facades be determined. For two door cabinets and cabinets, subtract 3 mm from the width - for the convergence point in the middle.

Sawing a new laminate with a hacksaw is a vicious practice. Only with a fine-toothed circular saw at high speed can chipping be avoided. If the home master undertakes to do everything himself, the recommendation is this: you need to remove the plastic with an awl under the metal ruler, go deep to the chipboard itself. The plastic is cut along two lines with an indent to the width of the cutting tool (usually 2 mm).

When it is not possible to cut the chipboard without chipping, the edge is set not tape, but 3D. It must be filed on a chair, giving a size allowance along the length of 3 mm (the edge of this type hides the corners of the shield). The same allowance - 3 mm - must be taken into account during cutting.

How to update old kitchen furniture with your own hands: painting, moldings

Those who decide to change facades should pay attention to excellent material - moisture resistant plywood. It is light, durable even with through cuts, which is important for frame and openwork facades. In addition, two layers of 8 mm can be combined with a thickness of 16 mm and not change the dimensions of the old chipboard set.

The required thickness can also be dialed with moldings. Semi-cylindrical, stucco, flat, classic ancient Greek mutulas - all these configurations, superimposed on a spectacular background, will bring clear lines, an expressive style. Moldings create the effect of milled Victorian-style furniture. The weakest point of plywood - the edge - is protected with wood, for example, with birch stationery rulers.

Plywood sheets before painting need only a primer. Previously painted chipboard facades without damage can not be primed. It is impossible to re-tone a stained, worn wood. But it can be painted with high-quality acrylic or pentaphthalic paint, tinted independently or on a centrifuge of a tinting center.

Painting Tips

  • Between the wide moldings, mother-of-pearl acrylic lacquer applied with a rubber spatula is expressive.
  • A wood grain pattern with the same shade as the molding goes well with a wooden floor. The texture is painted with two colors - lighter and darker - with a flute brush with thick bristles in the "wet" method.
  • Plain surfaces will not shine with paint stripes if the paint is applied with an airbrush. Without stripes, you can paint with a roller. The roller must be velor, and the painting is finished in one direction - rolling only up or only down on the facades of the entire headset.
  • A beautiful "marbled" pattern is obtained from shiny pentaphthalic paint. The background is rolled out with a roller. On a wet layer of several jars, spots are thrown with a brush - light, bright, with blackness. All - sharply different from the general background. With a nylon plate cut out of a container, drops are reduced. You can reduce 15 min. Then the surfaces are not used for 48 hours.

Decorative inserts

Flat plastic inserts, composite marquetry, carved voluminous, chased from metal - a welcome decor, subject to a certain style. But you can set a unique new style. Distribution was found by decoupage, which has become a total female hobby. It is famous for environmentally friendly technologies. Overhead rondos, ovals, boutonnieres, corners and applications are created, and sometimes the entire set is modified beyond recognition. The stylistic possibilities of decoupage technique are wide: from archaic to cutting-edge techno.

Decorating with ceramic tiles

Which modern master was the first to glue the remaining wall tiles on the facade - history is silent. But the traditions of using ceramics to decorate tables, artistic enamels on samples from the past are indicative. Of course, there can be no question of a layer of tile adhesive under such applications. Thin stripes, rhombuses are able to transform the headset, reliably protect the tree from external influences. The range is so high that it can complement any style.

A few examples:

Style

Type of tile

Tile Options

Location

Mounting method

Classical

Geometric constructions in the form of flowers, stripes

6 x 6 cm, 10 x 10 cm, 12 x 12

frieze (tape) under the tabletop, on fixed fixed flanges like pilasters, single inserts on the doors

Sticker, under wooden slats with selected quarter, behind brass profile

Painted majolica

4 x 4, 6 x 6 cm

Rhombic diagonal order

Glued

Ceramics with a thin layer of glaze, composite plaquettes

6 x 6 cm, 1.5 cm - on the contours

On the doors in the center

Glued

Glass, ceramics with a thick layer of glaze, not ornamental

Elongated forms from 2 cm in width, mosaic

Horizontal and vertical chains, serrations as unfinished construction

On smooth surfaces

Japanese minimalism

Glazed ceramics smooth and embossed

5 x 5, 6 x 6, 10 x 10 cm

Vertical inserts between the slats of composite frame facades

On the glue in the groove

Not plot tiles with a thick layer of glaze, embossed

No more than 15 cm on the side

Alone on smooth surfaces

To decorate the facades, single “full-length” flowers, rivets, nail heads and whole still lifes are produced. Before gluing, any of the tiles is primed on the reverse side, dried, and only then glued to a laminate or wood using mounting compounds. Glass mosaics on grids do not even need that - they are laid immediately.

Decoration with rattan inserts

Colonial, oriental, safari - styles that imply structural facades. Rattan weaving replaces glass, reliably protects facades from impacts. Moisture is absorbed by palm gratings without warping the surfaces. Such qualities are extremely important for the kitchen. The range is also extremely wide: hexagonal weaving, cross-longitudinal, combined. Plus - all kinds of colors.

The best varnishes are at the top of the list:

  • nitrocellulose,
  • alkyd,
  • polyurethane,
  • epoxy
  • acrylic.

There is a mass of "combi" varnishes with a partial addition of certain substances: shellac, resin, drying oil, acrylic suspension. A great variety is associated both with the aim of improving the compositions, and with various purposes. It is often necessary to revarnish surfaces containing lecithin (transformed fats). Nitro-lacquer will no longer stick to this. In any case, varnishing is the most reliable way to protect solid wood and paint on furniture. If you don't like glossy shine - choose a matte composition. You can add particles for a spark, tint to taste (transparency decreases from tinting). By selecting the composition and mode of the nozzle of the spraying device, varnish creates the effect of raindrops, bubble skin, silk, mica plates.

Some varnishing tips:

  • the first layer must be extremely thin, dried, it is carefully polished - a high degree of gloss depends primarily on this process;
  • the varnishing roller must be made of fur that is resistant to caustic thinners, even a new roller is washed before use, the strength of the bristles is checked;
  • the same requirement for brushes;
  • Accidentally caught pile or bristles of the brush are quickly picked out with an awl;
  • varnishing is carried out only in a clean room;
  • in order to avoid splashes, the spray nozzle is first tried on a cardboard and only then the torch is transferred to the surface to be painted;
  • polyurethane tinted varnish transforms ordinary glass into tinted;
  • varnish with a small additive like "chameleon" becomes pearly.

Very important! Spraying any paints and varnishes, even acrylic, is extremely harmful to the respiratory system. You need to work with a respirator.

Sooner or later, any household item wears out and needs to be replaced or improved. It is the restoration of kitchen furniture that is exactly the type of repair that everyone can do with their own hands, without using expensive materials or technologies.

If your kitchen set still properly performs its declared functions, but you began to notice that:

  • the body of the furniture is still strong, meets all the necessary requirements, but the appearance of the furniture facades leaves much to be desired;
  • individual furniture parts became unusable from external influences - the tabletop cracked and deformed, traces of hot or grease spots formed on the surface;
  • the headset is simply obsolete and tired;
  • you do not have the opportunity to spend money on buying a more modern kit.

This is where restoration is needed. Do-it-yourself kitchen furniture repair is a very real way out of the situation.

Restoration options

There are many ways to give old furniture a smart, updated look. Depending on your own creativity, you can create a real masterpiece of design art from an unremarkable typical bedside table. Or you can just tidy up the outside of the kitchen set. Our advice will help you in the realization of your ideas, regardless of their degree of complexity.

Self-adhesive film

A simple and inexpensive repair option. Applicable in the case when you want to quickly and inexpensively update the appearance of furniture facades. To date, dozens of self-adhesive options of different quality, colors, and at different prices are on sale. Vinyl films on a self-adhesive basis are durable, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes, they do not lose their color and do not fade. In order for the film to evenly and efficiently cover the surface of your furniture, first remove the facades, remove the fittings and degrease the surface. Having laid the boards on a horizontal plane, carefully remove the protective layer, while straightening the film with a hand or a spatula. Air bubbles that have appeared can be removed by carefully piercing them with a thin metal needle.

If you didn’t manage to stick the film correctly the first time, don’t use the damaged piece anymore. With repeated use, the connection of the material with the surface will be even worse, and your furniture will take on a sloppy, sloppy look. A photo of a kitchen set restored with a self-adhesive film can be seen in the selection.

Interior stickers

Perhaps the best way to restore small, local furniture defects. You can choose stickers of various sizes and content. Restaurant-themed drawings are suitable for decorating a kitchen set - bright fruits, berries, sweets or beautiful dishes. Such stickers are a kind of self-adhesive film, but a reduced size. The principle of application is the same - remove the protective layer and carefully straighten it on the fat-free surface of the furniture. If necessary, drawings can be easily removed using special alcohol-based degreasers.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the most creative way to tidy up old kitchen furniture with your own hands. The decoupage technique originates in Germany in the 15th century. Although the name of this method is French and literally means "cut". This is the basic principle of the process - we cut out pictures and apply them to the surface. You can decouple everything that has a sufficient plane. It can be dishes, clothes, books, decor items or, as in our case, kitchen furniture. Making such decorations is not difficult even for a beginner. You need to choose the base to your liking. These can be pictures from magazines, photographs, paper napkins. Kitchen cabinets decorated with old newspapers look very original. Apply a little special decoupage glue to the facade and distribute the cutouts as you wish. After complete solidification (about 8 hours), the surface must be varnished.

An interesting solution would be to decoupage the kitchen table with cuttings from culinary publications. Then, drinking your evening tea, you will not only rest, but also spend time with benefit, learning new secrets of the art of cooking. A photo of a kitchen decorated using decoupage technique is presented below.

Wall mural

If you have chosen this option of restoring kitchen furniture at home, take seriously the choice of photo wallpaper for furniture. Do not forget that the kitchen is a place of high humidity and constant temperature changes. Thus, materials for the restoration of old furniture must be wear-resistant, moisture resistant, and not emit any harmful fumes under the influence of hot air. Under such criteria, vinyl-based photo wallpapers with an additional protective layer are optimally suited. No need to choose wallpaper with a silky or linen texture for a kitchen set. Such materials can quickly absorb odors and wear out with constant contact. It is better to decorate the kitchen with wallpaper with a smooth surface - it will be easier to care for them.

If your set is located in a room with low ceilings, use wallpaper with an elongated silhouette in furniture decor, for example, with towers, tall trees or flowers on long stems. All this will help to visually increase the height of the room.

Installing a new countertop

The countertop is one of the most frequently used elements of kitchen furniture. It is on it that we cut food, beat off meat, here we put heavy dishes or kitchen appliances. In general, the countertop is exactly the piece of furniture that we cannot do without. Of course, not every material is capable of experiencing such a strong load for a long time. Therefore, in order to return functionality and beauty to our work surface, we update the countertop. This can be done in several ways:

  • decorating with ceramic tiles - clean the wooden surface well, use a grinder to eliminate all irregularities and defects. After that, apply special glue and lay out the mosaic. The type and thickness of the tiles depend on your preferences, but the laying method should be the same - very tightly, leaving minimal gaps. After the glue dries and the surfaces grab “tightly” (this will take at least 6 hours), grout the joints. If desired, you can varnish on top - this will add additional attractiveness and serve as a protective layer;
  • glass and fillers are an option for extraordinary, creative personalities who try to make every centimeter of space original and different. Carefully glue a few wooden slats placed on edge onto a clean tabletop surface. Thus, divide the area into several sectors. Fill the "pockets" with fillers. Coins, beads, pebbles, shells or other small objects of the same shape can act as a filler. Lay tempered impact-resistant glass on top of all this beauty. Fasten or glue it - the original table is ready at no extra cost. Photos of countertops with filler can be viewed in the selection with examples;
  • painting and varnishing is the easiest and most familiar way for most of us to repair an old countertop. Remove the remaining varnish from the furniture with sandpaper, degrease and cover the entire surface with acrylic paint. In order to give this simple process a little variety - apply paint using stencils. They can be purchased at any hardware store. After the drawing dries - open with varnish. If you want to leave a wooden thing in its natural, natural shade, use a stain.

Facade replacement

Replacing the facade of furniture is a way for those who are not satisfied with the restoration of kitchen furniture facades on their own. Factory furniture often has interchangeable elements. Therefore, it will not be difficult to pick up new facades in a furniture warehouse. The main thing is to correctly measure the old furniture designs. If you did not find suitable products for sale, you will have to place an order individually.

Although this repair method is the most expensive, it is still several times less than the cost of a new kit. By updating the facades of furniture in this way, you will get an almost new kitchen set, saving money.

For a domestic person, the kitchen is not only a place where food is prepared. This is a place for family lunches and dinners, a place to meet friends and family. All this means only one thing - the kitchen should not only be comfortable for the hostess, but also attractive in appearance. Each decor matters, and even more so the kitchen set. When cracks and stains appear on it, or when it no longer matches the style of the kitchen and the tastes of the owners, many people think about buying a new headset. But is it always advisable to spend money on if you can ennoble the existing one? If the headset is still strong, outdated in size and layout, then you can transform it with your own hands. Consider the most popular and effective ways to update the kitchen set.

Self-adhesive film

This method of restoring a kitchen set has become truly popular, and all thanks to its numerous benefits:

The downside is the low durability of the film, only 3-4 years, but the cheapness and ease of replacement smooth out this drawback.

The procedure for pasting kitchen facades is quite simple. The main thing, follow the following guidelines:

  • choose a film of a suitable color, taking into account preferences for a new one. It is not necessary to take material with wood imitation - you can take a plain film of light color, and then you will be able to make a small kitchen bigger and make your dreams come true;
  • it is best to remove the kitchen fronts - it will be easier to work. The fittings must be dismantled in any case;
  • measure the parameters of each removed facade;
  • the film must be glued to a clean, dry surface, i.e. facades must be carefully. This can be done with a soapy solution, or using dishwashing detergent. After that, it is necessary to remove the remnants of detergents and wipe the facades dry;
  • if the facades are seriously damaged, some time will have to be repaired. Peeled edges on the ends must be glued. The pits must be sanded, then filled, sanded again and primed. If there are large potholes, then in their place it is better to glue a patch of plywood or veneer;
  • in accordance with the measurements taken, it is necessary to cut the film. Experienced craftsmen recommend adding 4-5 cm of allowance in places where the film will bend. If there is a large drawing on the film, then when cutting it out, it is necessary to control that it is located correctly. It is better to cut with a clerical knife - so the edge will be as even and neat as possible;
  • take the first piece of film, start peeling off the protective layer of paper and attach the film with the adhesive side to the facade. Controlling evenness, gradually peel off the protective layer and stick the film;
  • You can roll the film with a rubber roller or a plastic scraper. This removes the remaining air. It is necessary to smooth from the center to the edges. If air bubbles remain, they can be pierced with a needle and rolled again with a roller;
  • if suddenly you notice that somewhere the film is glued crookedly, then within 5-6 hours the situation can be corrected. The film can be re-glued, but not more than 1-2 times, since then the glue will simply lose its properties;
  • when all the facades are pasted over, you can screw them back;
  • you can use the old fittings, or you can replace it with a new one that fits more into the updated style.

If the shelves are dirty to such an extent that no detergent takes them, then they can also be pasted over with a film. The principle of operation is the same. The film can be chosen close to the original color of the shelves.

Facade replacement

Many people think that the facades pasted over with a film look somehow too modest. This is all, of course, a matter of taste and personal preferences, but it is difficult to radically change the kitchen with a vinyl film, because glass inserts or panels will not be added to the doors. To make serious changes to the interior of the kitchen, it is better to act radically and completely replace the facades. Yes, it will turn out more expensive than with a film, but still much cheaper than when buying a new headset. The method is great if the frame of the furniture is still strong enough and durable.

It will be easier for the owners modular furniture, which was bought relatively recently. Then it will be possible to buy facades of the required size and replace them with your own hands. But this is not often so lucky, because usually you have to make facades to order. It is not at all necessary to change wooden doors to wooden ones, and chipboard to chipboard. The uniqueness of this method of restoration lies precisely in the fact that the appearance of the headset can be dramatically changed using completely different materials.

The cheapest option is facades made of chipboard or plastic. MDF and wood will cost more. You can choose accessories and decorations, for example, use glass inserts, but all this will affect the price. Masters with hands, of course, can make all the facades on their own. If you have woodworking skills, then why not? But much p easier and faster to contact a specialized company, which will produce facades for your headset.

Coloring

The method is quite simple, but requires careful surface preparation. The main advantage of the method is the ability to paint the facade in any color. If you want to make the kitchen more daring, then you can choose a bright shade, such as blue, green or orange. A win-win color is white, as well as many light shades, incl. beige, grey, cream, etc. Imagine in advance what the kitchen will look like, and get creative.

Simultaneously with painting the facades, they can be slightly transformed using moldings, special strips that are glued to the surface and give it an interesting relief.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  • remove the facades from the headset, dismantle the fittings and glass. Those elements that are difficult to remove can be sealed with masking tape;
  • old varnish or with a grinder. If PVC film was used as a decor, then it is better to use it. From the temperature, the film will melt, and it will be easier to remove it. It is better to work in a respirator so that small particles of the facade and the pungent smell of PVC do not enter the respiratory tract;
  • in the presence of serious damage, they must be filled with putty, and then sanded;
  • the surface is rubbed, then dust is removed, degreasing is carried out;
  • if you plan to use moldings, then they are attached at this stage. You can choose flat or textured planks, there are products that imitate stucco molding. It is better to grind the planks in advance, then they are cut into segments of the required sizes. Often, moldings are attached along the contour of the doors, or a pattern is formed from them closer to the center. Usually a 45 degree joint is used. After you have made sure that the figure is laid out evenly, the elements are glued, you can use glue for wood products. It is allowed to use nails without hats;
  • MDF, chipboard and wood absorb moisture well, therefore it is better to pre-coat them. The one that is designed for woodworking will go. It is better to apply two layers;
  • now you can start coloring. Use better or autoenamel. The first is cheaper, the second is better in terms of moisture resistance and resistance to mechanical damage. You can apply. The paint is applied in 2-3 layers depending on the required color saturation. To guarantee, some craftsmen cover the facades with a layer of transparent varnish;
  • when the paint dries, the masking tape is removed, the fittings are returned to their place, and the facades themselves are hung on hinges.

If staining seems too banal to you, then use it in your work. glizal, translucent glossy paint. It is applied in exactly the same way as acrylic paint, but while the coating dries, an interesting texture can be created on the surface. With a sponge, a bag or other improvised items, you can make a geometric pattern or an ornate pattern. If anything, part of the pattern can be removed with a roller. The result is an unusual result that will appeal to fans of ethnic style.

Lacquering

Option fit only for facades made of solid wood. The varnish allows you to reliably protect the wood and at the same time does not hide its chic natural look. When it comes to furniture, they use nitrocellulose, alkyd-urea, polyurethane, epoxy and polyester. It is important that the varnish protects the wood from moisture and high temperatures. Varnishes have a not very pleasant smell, therefore it is better to carry out all work on the street. If this is not possible, then it is better to take a water-based material, it has almost no smell.

It is very important to decide in advance with gloss level. The varnish can be glossy, which will add visual volume to the headset, or it can be matte, which will emphasize the pattern of the tree. The degree of gloss is indicated on the packaging as a percentage of reflected light: a glossy varnish will reflect up to 90% of the light, matte - only 10%, there are many intermediate options. Which is better depends on your preferences.

The order of work is as follows:

  • remove the facades, dismantle the fittings, if necessary, seal some parts with masking tape;
  • remove the old layer of varnish, you can use sandpaper. Dust is best removed with a vacuum cleaner. After finishing work, the surface is wiped with a damp cloth, then it is allowed to dry thoroughly;
  • apply primer;
  • varnish is applied with a brush or roller, it is better that each new layer is slightly thinner than the previous one;
  • with some types of varnish it is necessary to work only on the street;
  • drying speed - different for different varnishes, the average is indicated on the package;
  • after drying, the adhesive tape is removed, the fittings are returned to their place.

To create aging effect, you can apply stain in several layers.

Hardware update

We all have repeatedly heard about the enormous influence of small things, but many, however, refuse to believe in the truth of this statement. Designers, without hesitation, convince us that sometimes changing handles on a kitchen set can transform a kitchen space. Most often, however, the replacement of fittings is carried out along with the renewal or replacement of facades.

It happens that the kitchen set itself is perfectly preserved, and the handles from constant interaction with them have become flaky, dull, or even deformed in places. Take off your old hardware and head to a specialty store, where you can choose from a wide variety of handles. The main thing is that the size matches and you do not have to drill new holes.

If the old handles fit perfectly into the style of the kitchen, then you can find new ones that are as similar as possible to them. If you want something fresh, or if the kitchen facade has become completely unrecognizable after simple manipulations, then pick up handles in a new style. The range of manufacturers includes handles in modern and classic style, smooth chrome-plated and carved antique. There are handles with imitation of leaves and animals, there are inlaid glass and stones. There are wooden, plastic and metal, transparent and colored - everyone can choose the right one.

Maybe, hinges and mechanisms of exit shelves need to be replaced. Before going to the store, these elements should be dismantled and taken with you as a sample. New loops are selected according to the size of the previous ones. It happens that the existing holes are very loose, and it is impossible to attach new loops to them. Then they will have to be puttied with an acrylic-based composition in the color of the facade, sanded, varnished or painted, and only then drill new holes and install purchased hinges. Old roller mechanisms can be replaced with ball ones. All these actions give a huge result - using the headset becomes more pleasant and comfortable.

Glass replacement

As a rule, glass inserts in facades simply need to be washed well to return them to their original ideal appearance. But what if you want something new? You can replace the existing transparent glass with frosted or colored glass, then the kitchen will noticeably change. True, glass will have to be made to order, and not everyone can handle the replacement itself.

A more budget option is to buy. With its help, you can give the glass the desired shade without depriving them of transparency. It will help create a haze effect or simulate the most. Anyone who knows how to use a tape measure or centimeter tape, scissors and is able to carefully stick the film can definitely cope with gluing the film.

There is also the old grandfather method, which involves applying a mixture of chalk powder and silicate glue to the glass. In two layers, this material is applied to the glass, after which they become dull.

Decoupage of kitchen facades

Decoupage is a great way to update your kitchen set and give it a touch of style. After the transformation, the facades will look as if talented artists painted them for you, but you will know that you made all this beauty with your own hands. Absolutely any pattern can be applied to cabinets and shelves, but usually they choose something related to plant and kitchen themes: images of fruits and vegetables, coffee, jars of spices and cereals, flowers, etc. Decoupage will help decorate the facades with ornaments in the style of Gzhel or Petrikovskaya painting. The main thing is to find a suitable drawing - no one limits your imagination.

Everyone can cope with the restoration of facades on their own:

  • remove all doors, remove accessories;
  • if the surface of the headset is perfectly even and smooth, then it is enough to wash it well to get rid of stains of grease and dirt. If there are defects, it is better to sand the surface. First use fine-grained, and then coarse-grained sandpaper. If you have a grinder at your disposal, it will greatly simplify the process. In the presence of cracks, depressions, pits, it is better to fill them with putty. When it dries, the treated areas are sanded again. After that, the facades can be primed, but many skip this stage;
  • decoupage technique is suitable not only for wood, chipboard and MDF - it can also be used to decorate plastic and glass facades. Preparing them for decoration is very simple - just get rid of all the dirt and grease;
  • the easiest way is to use three-layer napkins for decoupage. Think in advance in which part of the facade the drawing will be located. Don't use images that are too small. Different lockers can be decorated with pictures in the same style. The image can be glued to ordinary PVA glue;
  • now it remains to open the facade with acrylic varnish, it is better to use 3-4 layers, each is applied after the previous one has completely dried. It is easiest to work with a narrow brush with long bristles;
  • it remains to return the fittings to their place and mount the facades.

If this is not your first decoupage work, then you can use not only special napkins. Experienced craftsmen know that fragments of wallpaper with a suitable pattern, and even maple for the kitchen table, will do, not to mention the fact that the image you like can be printed on a printer.

Decoration with ceramic tiles

After repair, almost everyone has the remains of a tile. A lot of material for this method is not needed, because even the purchase will not hit the budget. Naturally, not all facades are laid out with tiles. A fragment with a beautiful pattern can be glued in the center. It can be one tile or four smaller tiles laid out in a square or diamond shape. Small tiles can lay out the contours of the cabinets. Often such decoration is used to decorate the lower or upper edge of the headset. The image on the tile should match the overall style of the kitchen.

The principle of operation is as follows:

Decoration with rattan inserts

The principle is the same as with ceramic tiles. Rattan inserts will look appropriate with ethnic and eco-style. Rattan perfectly copes with the effects of moisture, therefore it is well suited for the kitchen. It can be used to replace glass inserts along with large-scale restoration of facades. Rattan inserts can be glued over blind cabinets. A variety of weaves and the presence of several shades will allow you to choose the appropriate insert option.

Working with rattan is easy:

The use of chintz

Fabric decor is rarely used, so this is your chance to make the kitchen unique. You will need a piece of fabric with a suitable pattern, and then everything is simple:

What else is used to update kitchen facades?

The fantasy of home craftsmen knows no bounds, and folk ingenuity has generated a lot of interesting non-trivial ideas on how else to ennoble the old kitchen facade. For this, the following materials are used:

How to update a kitchen countertop?

Renewing facades and leaving the countertop unattended means not finishing what you started. - the most vulnerable place of the kitchen set, because its surface constantly collides with drops of water and fat, mechanical stress, high temperature. Chipboard countertops are usually the first to suffer, and when the facade looks even more or less normal, the work surface leaves much to be desired.

What can you do yourself to update the kitchen countertop? There are several options:

If the countertop is still in good condition, but there is only one or two noticeable flaws on it (for example, burnt places or places from a knife strike), you can carry out local repair. The defective place is carefully processed with a milling cutter, so that in the end a recess like a quarry is obtained. It is filled with putty on wood in the color of the countertop, the material is added in portions, well tamped, the excess is removed with a knife. The treated area is sanded, polished and painted. If you can accurately repeat the color or pattern of the countertop, then the place of repair will be invisible. When everything is really bad with the countertop, it is better to produce it complete replacement by turning to professionals.

By combining the methods described above, you can transform the kitchen set in such a way that all guests will think that you bought new furniture. If you combine this transformation with a redecoration in the kitchen, then the result will be impressive at all.

Remodeling a kitchen is almost the same process as remodeling, only easier and less expensive. It is not always financially possible to purchase new furniture, household appliances, change the decoration of walls and ceilings. And sometimes you just don’t want to part with the old, but such beloved and good things. Then experienced designers come to the rescue, who will help radically update the interior at minimal cost. How to remake a kitchen set with your own hands, how to transform a kitchen in the shortest possible time?

New life for an old headset

Furniture in the kitchen is subjected to serious tests: grease stains, soot deposits, temperature changes make the suites quickly lose their original attractiveness. In addition, headsets are used more often than other furniture, because a woman spends a third of her life at the stove for cooking. The kitchen is also loved for the fact that it is here that the family gathers at the same table, guests, friends and relatives come. Every housewife wants to feel at her best, so a sloppy interior, peeling paint, chips and cracks bring only grief. You can correct the situation with the help of external renovation of the interior. For the kitchen, do-it-yourself furniture alteration can be carried out in the following ways.

Facade painting

If the old kitchen is technically quite suitable for further use, then as an alteration, you can simply refresh the facades by painting. Experts recommend choosing a car enamel that is resistant to mechanical damage, not afraid of moisture, sunlight and temperature changes. You can also take acrylic or alkyd paint, but its duration is much shorter. Before starting the alteration, it is necessary to remove the facades, number them (for further convenience during assembly) and unscrew the fittings. Handles, hinges, it is recommended to hold in a solution of water and soda, and then wipe with a solvent.

From an old kitchen set made of wood or veneer, the previous coating should be removed: varnish or paint. To do this, it is necessary to grind the surface with sandpaper: first coarse, then fine-grained. If there are cracks, they need to be puttied and the surface leveled. After that, the facades should be degreased with a special solution and allowed to dry.

Now you can start painting furniture with your own hands. Experts say that spray paint lays down more evenly, but this opinion is controversial. An ordinary paint brush will also do the job if the paint is applied in one direction. It is advisable to make 2 layers - then the color will be uniform, without pale spots. You can also use stencils to decorate facades with original patterns or designs. After complete drying, the fittings are screwed to the doors, and the parts are put in their original place. Such a renovation of the kitchen will refresh the interior, make it more stylish and modern, in addition, the price of a liter can of paint usually does not exceed 500 rubles, and car enamels - 1000 rubles.

Self-adhesive film

Vinyl wrap is a simple and budget option for remodeling a kitchen, the old surface of which can be either wood or plastic: self-adhesive will work in both cases. Before you start reworking furniture, you need to measure the dimensions of the facades in advance and purchase a film with a margin so that you can correct possible errors.

Facades must be removed from the headset, numbered, laid out on the floor or on the table. Having measured the desired piece from the film, it should be applied to the edge of the surface and, carefully removing part of the protective coating, glued to the facade. Further, the film is gradually scrolled and attracted, simultaneously leveling with a spatula or a dry rag. If bubbles form during the pasting process, they can be pierced with a needle. In case of unevenness, the film can be peeled off and leveled, but this should be done no more than once, otherwise it will quickly peel off from the kitchen set. After a few hours, the facades can be put in place.

If the appearance of the kitchen after the alteration fully complies with the stated requirements, it is recommended to install new fittings for the convenience of further use. Old broken handles must be unscrewed with a screwdriver or screwdriver and go to a construction hypermarket or market. There, the part should be shown to the sales consultant - and he will quickly select a suitable analogue.

The same goes for hinges, fasteners and other mechanisms. If the holes for the screws and the grooves have become too wide, chips have formed on the surface and the fittings do not hold, it is recommended to restore the furniture with your own hands. All holes can be easily repaired with putty. When it hardens, any screw or nail will easily fall into place and will hold firmly there.

Appliances

After altering the kitchen furniture, you can pay attention to household appliances. It is very good if it is built-in and hides behind the facades of the headset. Although the stove that is used most often is usually in plain sight, especially if it is gas. Before alteration, it should be thoroughly washed, removing all possible contaminants. Chips and scuffs can be repaired with heat-resistant paint. A very original solution would be to harmoniously combine it with a headset.

As for the refrigerator, it can be pasted over with a vinyl film. Of course, the new design of the alteration will not last long due to the instability of the material to mechanical damage, but at least every month you can change the appearance of the refrigeration unit. Auto enamel is more resistant, especially in a can. When staining, it is recommended to choose apricot, peach, white, light gray shades.

By the way, the vinyl film can be ordered according to the photo you like, then the refrigerator will acquire an original and unique design.

Finishing work

Remodeling a kitchen with your own hands is a simple and even exciting process, especially if all family members are involved in the work. It is better to entrust the replacement of electrical wiring, global redevelopment and transfer of communications to professionals, and you can refresh the interior on your own with the help of wall decoration. To do this, it is necessary to remove the old coating, putty, level the walls and cover with new paint.

If it is not possible to make the surface perfectly flat, ordinary wallpaper will help hide minor defects. It is recommended to paste over a free bare wall with photo wallpapers with a 3D effect. Any room, thanks to a drawing with a perspective, will only increase in volume. It is noteworthy that coloring, along with leveling, costs about 3,000 rubles, so this rework option is very economical. Split or cracked old tile? There is no need to remove all the old coating when it is enough to replace only the section that has failed.

  • Doors to the kitchen can be refreshed with staining. To do this, it is necessary to clean the canvas and apply a new paint, which will be combined in color with the interior. Another interesting option is wallpapering. They will adhere perfectly to the PVA glue. You can also upholstery with faux leather. Glass sliding doors help save space. The roller sliding mechanism will allow the canvas to hide along the wall.
  • Old wooden frames do not have to be replaced with metal-plastic glazing. To insulate the kitchen, it is recommended to install a conventional sealant. Thanks to such sealing, the room will become more comfortable, drafts will disappear.
  • Chairs usually need reworking too. Due to frequent use, the base loosens, making the item unstable and flimsy. Replacing the fittings will help restore the original condition. First you need to tighten the bolts, if desired, replace. The old foam lining is recommended to be updated, the same goes for the upholstery. Using a hammer, nails or a construction stapler, the fabric is stretched and fixed from the underside of the seat. You can also make your own removable chair covers. The wooden stool needs to be sanded and painted.
  • An old chest of drawers can also be used as an additional work surface or storage space. A new countertop will help to give it a stylish look. The surface can also be updated with staining or decoupage technique. A new tablecloth will help hide defects.

Show your imagination and do not be afraid to combine - for example, you can paint only the frames of the facade, and paste over the inserts with a film, or add decor to the painted cabinet doors

Woodgrain inserts and painted front frames

So let's update the kitchen! This room is one of the most used in any apartment or house. We are sure that in your kitchen there are also a couple of points that can be improved or refreshed.

1. How to update the kitchen: replace the doors

Hanging new doors on kitchen cabinets is an economical alternative to completely replacing furniture. The appearance of the kitchen will change beyond recognition if you change their color or texture. However, there is an important point here, especially for “older” kitchens: when hanging new doors, fasteners often have to be changed, and this can weaken the design of the kitchen, lead to sagging and shorten the life of the entire set.

2. Paint the facades

This method will help to achieve the same strong effect as when replacing the doors, and there are fewer risks. Arm yourself with your favorite paint and update old doors. The spray can do better than the brush: there will be less streaks, it is easier to achieve an even coverage. If you want to use liquid paint left over from the last repair, it is best to apply it with a sponge in a dabbing motion. And don't forget to apply a couple of coats of varnish on top.

3. Install new handles

It's amazing what role such a small detail as a handle plays in the perception of the entire kitchen. While replacing them is simple and inexpensive. If you're repainting the cabinets at the same time, you can patch and paint the old handle holes so there's no limit to the choice of new parts. If you only change handles, you will have to find a similar format.

4. Cunning with the countertop

If the surface of your countertop is completely worn out or just already annoying you, you can replace it. However, if it is glued to the cabinets, it may be difficult for you to mask the damage from dismantling later. There is a simpler option and, if we are talking about a countertop made of natural materials, cheaper: invite a specialist home who will mount a thin layer of wood veneer or stone on top of your countertop.

5. Upgrade light

Buying new fixtures or at least changing the shade of a pendant lamp will give you a boost of novelty. Think original pendants, they look more elegant than just hanging cord.

If your kitchen has only one common light source, you are guaranteed to add comfort and improve the atmosphere in the room by hanging a lamp above the work surface and a couple of sconces in the table area. If you don't want to hire an electrician to mount the fixtures on the wall, those that simply plug into an outlet will do.

6. Switch to energy efficient lighting

So much is said about it for a reason - they are more expensive than other light bulbs (although the price decreases over time), but at the same time they work for a very long time, are extremely energy efficient and you can’t get burned about them. Changing light bulbs is probably the easiest change you can make to your kitchen, but brighter light will improve the look and feel of the space, and energy savings will be good for your budget. LEDs are sold with a wide variety of base types, so even built-in halogens can be easily replaced.

7. Paint the ceiling

Paint or re-whitewash the ceiling. Even if this is the only thing you will do to update the kitchen, you will be surprised how much lighter and brighter the surroundings will become. Kitchen ceilings are under a lot of pressure due to steam, smoke, dust and grease splashes, and you may not notice this until you compare the "before" and "after".

8. Update your kitchen apron

If the wall covering behind the kitchen worktop is outdated or, moreover, was not initially adapted to kitchen everyday life, it's time to make a beautiful and practical kitchen apron. There are many interesting ideas in our articles:

  • Rating of materials for a kitchen apron: all the advantages and disadvantages

Fast and inexpensive solution: redeem or, if you're lucky, pick up for free the remains of various tiles in warehouses or from friends who have recently completed repairs. Combine tiles of different sizes, colors and textures to create a unique and vibrant backsplash that will be a real highlight of your kitchen. If you want a mosaic apron, then broken tiles are also suitable for these purposes. By the way, if the condition of the old tile is still normal, it can also be simply spray-painted and varnished.

9. Change the flooring

Are the floors in need of updating? On a budget, this problem can be solved by doing the work yourself and choosing flooring that feels good on top of the old floor (as long as it's not too crooked). Vinyl tile, cork, laminate or linoleum is easy enough to install that you can do it yourself with a little diligence.

10. Get rid of junk

Whatever changes you make to your kitchen, clutter and excessive visual “garbage” can ruin everything. Perhaps not all the accessories on the kitchen shelves and magnets on the refrigerator are so dear to you. In the vacated space, you can put a few new carefully selected items: vases or bowls, vintage bottles or commemorative photographs. Or just leave more free space.
