What fabric are sofa covers made of? Sofa covers: benefits of use and selection criteria

Upholstered furniture is valued by consumers primarily because of the high level of comfort, but it has one serious drawback - the upholstery does not retain its original appearance for long and gradually wears out. Random stains, cigarette burns, cat claws can speed up this process. When planning to purchase upholstered furniture, the owner must remember that not only he, but also his pets will rest on it. When buying a sofa and armchair, many owners expect that they will serve them for years.

The need to replace the upholstery may arise not only because of the loss of its aesthetic properties. It may just annoy the owner. If, after a few years, he wants to carry out repairs in the house, it is possible that the upholstery will fall out of the overall composition of the interior. There are many ways to solve the problems described above, but the most preferable of them is to buy a sofa cover.

Advantages of furniture capes

There was a time, when covers could be found in every home with upholstered furniture. But over time, their popularity began to fade, which was largely facilitated by the emergence of new upholstery fabrics. The explanation for this is quite simple - modern fabrics are characterized by increased wear resistance, however, they also have a certain limit.

And now the manufacturers have decided to turn to the once forgotten furniture covers. Today, even well-known manufacturers of Italian and Spanish furniture offer to buy a eurocover. Such capes are universal and suitable for all types of sofas. The desire of many owners to buy such a cape for their sofa can be explained by the following advantages of these capes:

To date, nothing can better protect a sofa from a cat than a special sofa cover. The cape has an elastic texture and when the animal tries to “tear”, the fabric stretches after the claws, and the cats no longer get the same pleasure. Therefore, they very quickly lose interest in such furniture.

Case types

Sofa covers today are presented in a large number of options. If the finished model offered in the store does not suit the buyer, he can always place an order for the manufacture of an individual case, taking into account his wishes. Of course, such products will cost much more, and in addition to everything, you will have to find out the exact dimensions of the sofa before ordering. Covers for sofas can be classified into several groups:

  • tailor-made;
  • capes on the sofa with an elastic band;
  • fragmentary covers for separate parts of the sofa with "sticky" locks;
  • eurocovers.

Of all the options described, covers from European manufacturers seem to be the best solution.

What are eurocovers?

These are products sewn from special fabrics and reinforced with rubberized threads. They are made from natural, most often cotton, fibers with the addition of acrylic, polyester, elastane. The use of such additives allows the capes to exactly repeat the shape of the furniture. Due to the addition of natural fibers, the fabric provides pleasant sensations to the human body.

If you are going to buy a cape on the sofa, you should not forget about the interior of the room. This moment was taken into account by the designers, who were able to create several options for covers made from the following materials:

The standard set includes a set for a sofa and a pair of armchairs. You can buy eurocovers for chairs by placing a separate order or by purchasing a ready-made set containing two capes.

Operating rules

Each set of covers comes with care instructions. From it you can learn about the composition of the fabric, as well as get acquainted with recommendations for the preferred mode and temperature of the wash. It is recommended to wash the sofa covers on a delicate cycle. Before sending the covers to the washing machine, they must be turned inside out. After washing, ironing capes is not required, as they are resistant to deformation.

When choosing a cover, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer. If you believe the test results, then the highest quality cases are from Italian and Spanish manufacturers. The capes they offer and differ in a variety of options and have a nice design. However, they are more expensive than their competitors. Cases from Turkish manufacturers are a good option. They are more affordable, but not as high quality.

Sofa covers from Chinese manufacturers are the most budget option. However, it is wrong to assume that products made in China are always of poor quality. You need to look first of all at the manufacturing company. Although even in this case, the risk of stumbling upon a low-quality product remains.

For furniture used in children's rooms, it would be more correct to purchase capes in bright colors. During games or activities, children can easily stain and even damage the sofa. In such a case, it does not hurt to purchase two capes at once. The same should be done for those owners who are quickly tired of the monotony and who have two sets of curtains - summer and winter.

Bought two sets of sofa covers, for example, from microfiber, you can use one as an everyday one, and the other for special occasions and holidays. So that upholstered furniture does not stand out from the overall design, you can also purchase covers for chairs, and a tablecloth sewn from a similar fabric to them.

Covers are not only a great way to protect furniture and extending its service life. They can also be used to update old sofas and armchairs, if their native upholstery has long been in need of replacement, which the owner has no way to make yet. Covers will quickly hide external defects, and none of the guests will guess that the sofa and chairs in your house are quite old.

There are people who love the sofa so much because of its functionality that they hesitate to throw it away for a long time. Hauling, including cutting, is a rather expensive service. And it is in such cases that you should think about buying universal capes. Europeans have long appreciated the advantages of covers for upholstered furniture and actively use them. In our country, as well as in the rest of the post-Soviet space, capes are just beginning to come into use. Therefore, many do not even know what fabric to sew a sofa cover from.

How to choose a sofa cover?

Although sofa covers are versatile and suitable for any upholstered furniture, there are still a number of parameters that should be considered when choosing them.

Coloring matters a lot when choosing covers. If you want the room to look attractive, try to keep all interior elements in the same color. It is also important that the colors match the dimensions of the furniture. The pattern of the fabric for covers for upholstered furniture should not be lost and look “clumsy”.

You also need to remember about children and pets if they live in your apartment. Do not choose light-colored material. If all other options do not suit you, then make sure that the material is at least with a pattern.

Dimensions

One of the important issues that many buyers have problems with is calculating the size of the cape for the sofa. To do this, you just need to measure the width of the back. For double sofas, it usually does not exceed 160 cm, and for triple sofas, this parameter is always more than 160 cm. When ordering a product from a company that sews sofa covers, indicate all the important details of your furniture, including if you have it angular. Manufacturers today can offer cover options for any furniture, so no matter what size and shape your sofa has, in any case, you can find a suitable cover for it.

These indicators depend on the service life. You need to shave the material for the covers correctly so as not to be disappointed in the future. The most common materials for the manufacture of removable covers are velor and flock, microfiber. They are quite soft, pleasant to the touch, velvety. But the most important quality is wear resistance and durability. Also easier to clean.

Everyone who has a sofa at home has undoubtedly dreamed of a removable cover for it. After all, the cover is very practical and convenient, perfectly protects the sofa upholstery from dirt, stains, dust and other operating costs. The cover can be washed, and then pulled clean and fresh again on the sofa.

You can't do that with upholstery. Unfortunately, not all sofa models are equipped with covers, so sometimes you have to sew it yourself. This is especially true if the upholstery of the newly purchased sofa is light, and you would like to extend its life. In the article, we will consider the features of choosing a cover for a sofa and find out from what fabric the most durable and high-quality covers are obtained.

Functions

Let's figure out what a sofa cover is for, what role it plays.

Firstly, the cover is the protection of the sofa upholstery from all the dirt that may be, as well as from dust. The cover is convenient in that it can be easily removed and washed if it becomes dirty or stained. With upholstery, such a “number” will not work. This is the main practical plus of the cover. Agree, it is much easier to wash the fabric from time to time than to admire the dirty, dusty upholstery.

The cover can become a decorative decoration of the sofa, serve as a bedspread. As a rule, if the sofa has a cover, then it does not need a cover. The covers are double-sided - that is, they can be turned inside out, changing the color and pattern, and refreshing the sofa in a new way.

The cover is able to “restore” old upholstered furniture without any special tricks and costs. During operation, the upholstery is often wiped, worn out, faded, torn, becomes unusable. At the same time, it happens that the foam rubber and all the internal structure of the sofa are in order: it is not pressed through, it is serviceable, everything works. In this case, a replaceable cover comes to the rescue. Its dense fabric, tailored to the size of the sofa, will reliably cover all the defects and imperfections of the upholstery, turning the furniture into a new one.

The cover will help to give the room a festive look. On sale now you can find or sew on your own many models of covers from different fabrics, different styles, styles and colors. In the spring, you can “dress” your sofa in a light, delicate outfit, and for the New Year, get a festive version - a bright color with gold and thematic drawings. Many manufacturers often offer sofa cushions for the cover, which also add a certain amount of comfort to the overall picture.

Material selection

Let us consider in more detail an important question - which fabric for a sofa cover to prefer.

Velours

Velor for sofa cover

Velor can be made from various raw materials and in each case have their own, special characteristics and advantages. For sewing a sofa cover, velor made of cotton or wool is best suited.

Peculiarities

  • The fabric does not require complex care, which makes such a cover a practical purchase.
  • Velor has hypoallergenic properties and does not accumulate static electricity.
  • The material has a high level of wear resistance, which allows the case to serve for many years without problems and loss of its external characteristics.
  • Dirt, stains, dust are easily removed from the fabric by washing or dry cleaning. This allows the velor cover to delight its owners with an impeccable look of furniture for many years.
  • But, although velor costs less than velvet, however, sometimes its price can be high. In addition, velor is not very resistant to mechanical stress. Sharp cat claws can damage the fabric. Therefore, such a cover is suitable only if there are no animals in the house.

Flock

Also a great option for a sofa cover. Flock is soft, delicate, but at the same time quite durable. This fabric is also called "velvet substitute". The composition of the flock is polyester and cotton, moreover, natural fibers - 35%, and synthetic - 75%.

Flock for sofa cover

This composition allows the flock to immediately have the advantages of natural cotton and the stability and durability of synthetics. The pile is applied to the material by creating a special electrostatic voltage.

Peculiarities

  • Flock is not deformed. The cover from this fabric will perfectly keep the original form all the time of operation.
  • The fabric is easy to care for. All stains and dirt are quickly removed from it.
  • Flock does not fade. A sofa with such a cover will calmly “survive” even a hot sunny summer by the window.
  • The material has a high level of water repellency. This is especially true if there are children in the house who can easily spill something on the sofa.
  • The material is dense, but at the same time soft and pleasant to the touch.
  • Does not accumulate static electricity, resistant to dust. In the flock, therefore, a dust mite rarely starts.
  • The colors on the fabric will remain bright all the time of operation, and the safe composition makes it possible to use covers made of this material for children's sofas.
  • Minus: flock sometimes causes allergies, so people with a tendency to this disease are better off choosing a different material. Also read reviews about flock fabric.

Teflon flock

This is also a flock, however, with a special impregnation of liquid Teflon. This fabric is a real breakthrough and a modern high-tech development. The impregnation is not applied on top of the fabric, but is already included in the composition of the fibers at the molecular level.

Thanks to Teflon, this type of flock repels dirt, does not accumulate dust, does not absorb liquid, and it is impossible to put a stain on it. Among other things, Teflon flock is very easy to wash and dries instantly.

Teflon flock for sofa cover

For those who have four-legged pets in the house, this material is a real find. Teflon flock is remarkably resistant to animal claws and teeth.

microfiber

Another material suitable for sofa covers. Many manufacturers position microfiber as a "suede substitute". This artificial fabric comes from advanced Japan. It has a number of valuable properties and characteristics.

Microfiber sofa cover

Microfiber is a durable fabric that can withstand long and intensive use without losing its external qualities and technical advantages.

For sofa covers, it is better to opt for Teflon-impregnated microfiber, as in the previous example. In this case, the fabric becomes practically invulnerable, acquires increased resistance and strength. At the link you will find information about what kind of microfiber fabric and reviews about the material.

Microfiber impregnated with Teflon is resistant to fading, is not afraid of grease and dirt. This is a great solution for sofas that are subjected to particularly intensive use: in the nursery, living room.

Cotton

The great advantage of this fabric is that cotton is completely natural. Therefore, the material is breathable and environmentally friendly. Cotton lends itself well to dyeing. It is from cotton that the brightest and most decorative sofa covers are obtained.

Cotton for sofa cover

The disadvantages include the fact that due to the fact that there is no artificial fiber in the composition, cotton does not last too long. But if the fabric is coated with a protective impregnation, this allows you to extend its service life. In this case, the cover becomes resistant to fading and does not wear out so quickly. Another disadvantage of cotton is that after washing it can shrink.

Jacquard

Covers made of this dense fabric have increased strength characteristics. The modern jacquard fabric contains both natural cotton and synthetic polyester with elastane. The result is a strong, durable fabric that is resistant to deformation and stretching.

jacquard for sofa cover

Jacquard is very decorative, has a textured surface. A sofa with such a cover makes a “rich”, solid impression. This material fits especially well in classic traditional interiors.

Jacquard is suitable even if there are animals in the house. The material is not afraid of hooks, it is very difficult to tear it. Double-sided jacquard is often used.

shinill

It is both soft and dense fabric, great for furniture covers. Chinilla feels like soft plush, warm and very pleasant. Shinill looks noble and elegant, it is pleasant to sit on it, it makes an excellent impression. Despite its density, shinille is a fairly light material. This lightness is provided to him by the acrylic fibers in the composition.

In the photo - a sofa from chinilla:

Shinil for sofa cover

The material fits the furniture well, so it is only suitable for new sofas. He will not be able to hide the sagging of old copies.

Do not buy adhesive-based shinil - check this point specifically with the seller. The fact is that the glued material does not stand for a long time, and after several washes it will lose its appearance. In addition, constant direct close contact with the adhesive has a negative impact on health.

In addition to the materials listed, the sofa cover can be made from other materials, even faux fur.

First of all, pay attention to the strength characteristics of the material, and only then to its external decorative effect. It is much more important that the fabric serve for a long time and be wear-resistant than that it pleases the eye, but not for long.

If there are animals and babies at home, then it is important that the material is especially durable and resistant to dirt, sharp claws and other influences.

It is very good if the fabric is impregnated with a special water- and grease-repellent impregnation. In this case, you can not be afraid to spill tea on the sofa or that the children will smear the upholstery with grease. The impregnated fabric is not afraid of such influences and is easily washed.

On the video fabric for sewing sofa covers:

Pay attention to the overall quality of the fabric. It is important that there are no stains, scuffs, bald spots, or other defects. A product made of such material will turn out to be appropriate - of poor quality.

If there are animals in the house, do not choose a fabric with pile. The cat or dog will shed and all their hair will remain on the surface of the sofa. The villi are very poorly washed, and clog the drum of the washing machine.

We examined the features of choosing a fabric for a sofa cover. As you can see, making the right choice is not so difficult, the main thing is to choose a strong, dense and beautiful fabric. And then you can enjoy yourself with updated furniture for a long time. It is very convenient to use the eurocover on the sofa:

How to sew a cover on a sofa of complex shape: a step-by-step master class

The essence of sewing a cover for a sofa of complex shape is the same as in the case of a simple sofa. However, the cover will have more details and you will have to spend some time carefully pinning the fabric onto the sofa, and then stitching the details.

You will need:

Cover fabric;

Tailor's pins;

Scissors;

Sewing machine and thread;

Cord for edging.

Work sequence:

1. If the sofa has cushions, remove them. Throw the fabric over the sofa face down. Smooth out the fabric on the sofa, determining where the end or beginning of this or that detail will be. Unnecessary pieces of fabric can be cut out immediately, without forgetting about seam allowances. Leave them wider - then you can cut off the excess.

2. Where necessary, make notches for a better fit. Fix the darts with pins.

3. You can sew up the darts at once, just by chipping each one, and then forming the next/next seam.

4. Details for the armrests are formed according to the same principle. Leave the finished parts of the cover on the sofa, put the fabric inside out on the armrest. Straighten the fabric, chop it with the finished part of the cover, cut off the excess.

5. This is how the parts of the cover for the convex armrests are formed.

6. Chip the armrest part with the main part of the cover, complete the seams.

7. Prepare the finishing edge. To do this, cut out the stripes and sew them obliquely, as a slanting inlay is sewn.

8. Fold the piping part in half lengthwise, put the cord inside and lay the line along the entire length, as shown in the photo.

9. Having pinned the fabric to the front of the armrest, cut out the corresponding part of the cover.

10. Insert a piping between the details of the cover and pin it with pins.

11. Sew seams with piping.

12. If your sofa has symmetrical armrests, follow the same procedure for the cover for the second armrest. If the sofa is a compound, corner sofa, as in this case, form the second side of the cover as shown below.

16. To cut out the details of the "skirt", measure the distance from the sewn edging to the floor level. This length of the "skirt" will be the same for all parts. The details of the “skirt” will need 12: 4, equal in width to half the long side of the sofa cover, 2, equal in width to the side of the sofa cover, and 6 identical parts of small width - they will be sewn from below at the junction of the “skirt” parts. Cut out 12 pieces, add seam allowances and processing. Work all the details on all sides except the top.

17. Put the cover on the sofa with the seams inward and pin the details of the "skirt" around the perimeter, as shown in the photo. Then stitch all the details with one seam.

18. Now you need to remove the cover, turn it inside out, trim all the seam allowances and process them with a “zigzag”. Ready! To learn how to update the cushion covers on such a sofa, read the master class below.
