Seam roof installation. Seam roof - a well-forgotten old

Today, there is simply a huge selection of roofing materials on the market: from traditional ceramic tiles to modern ondulin. However, despite such a variety, many homeowners opt for metal roofs mounted in a seam way.

The main features of seam roofs

To begin with, we will understand the construction technology associated with this type of roofing. So, a folded roof is called a roof assembled from metal sheets interconnected by means of special seams - folds. These seams can be either horizontal (lying folds) or vertical (standing folds, which should go exclusively along the slope). In addition, single and double folds are used.

Sheets of metal with edges prepared to form seam joints are called paintings. Seam roofing is assembled from sheets with a thickness of 450 to 800 mm and a width of 600 to 800 mm (the length can be arbitrary).

Seam joints are created using special hand tools or electromechanical devices. Also produced by modern industry, the installation process of which is greatly simplified and does not require the use of tools.

Positive and negative aspects of the use of seam roofing

As with any other roof, installing a seam roof has both advantages and certain disadvantages.

Among the advantages of such a roof are:

  • long service life;
  • resistance to corrosion;
  • light weight;
  • a smooth surface that does not allow rainwater and snow to linger.

Of the disadvantages of a seamed roof, it should be noted:

  • poor sound insulation (in the absence of a layer of thermal insulation during rain, the sound of drops on metal will be heard);
  • difficult installation (without sufficient experience, it will be very problematic to cope with such work);
  • low aesthetic appeal (in the case of using galvanized steel) or high cost (in the case of using copper or zinc-titanium);
  • the ability to accumulate static electricity (in this regard, the installation of a seam roof must invariably be accompanied by the installation of a lightning rod).

Types of metals used for the construction of seam roofing

For the installation of a seam roof, the following types of metal can be used:

The specifics of the installation of seam roofing

Of course, the choice of material plays an important role, but another point is just as important when a seam roof is installed - the installation technology, which must be strictly observed. First of all, it should be borne in mind that this coating method can be used for those roofs whose slopes are at least 14 degrees. The use of seam roofing on more gentle roofs (with a slope of 7 degrees) is possible only if the metal sheets are connected by a double seam sealed with silicone sealant.

In order for the seam type roof to serve as long as possible, the connecting elements used during its installation (clamps, nails, bolts, wire, etc.) must be made of the same material as itself. If this requirement is not observed (for example, when ordinary nails are used to fasten sheets of galvanized steel), due to corroded connecting parts, the roof itself will gradually become unusable, which will significantly reduce its service life.

Seam roof installation technologies

For the installation of a seam roof, two main technologies are used: traditional and modern. Let's look at each of these methods in detail.

Traditional technology provides for the following stages of work:

  • production of paintings for the subsequent assembly of the roof, as well as other roofing elements (overhangs, gutters, etc.). To do this, a drawing is made according to which blanks are cut out of metal, and then the edges of these blanks are bent in such a way that it is possible to connect them to each other by the folded method;
  • lifting prepared paintings to the roof and connecting them with the help of special seams - folds;
  • fixing the installed paintings to the crate using special connecting elements - clamps. One of their ends is wound into a fold, and the second is attached to the crate beam;
  • installation on all openings (pipes, ventilation ducts, etc.) of protective aprons made of the same metal as the roof itself.

In the case of using metal sheets, the length of which exceeds ten meters, the seam roof installation technology provides for their fastening to the crate by means of floating clamps. Thanks to this, even in the case of temperature deformations, the tightness of the roof will be maintained.

Modern mounting technology allows:

  • to make pictures of any length;
  • use a mobile rolling mill that provides the most durable and tight connection;
  • fasten the metal with hidden clamps, as well as minimize the total number of connecting elements, which reduces the likelihood of corrosion and increases the service life of the roofing.

Features of installation of a roof made of zinc-titanium and copper

One of the most specific materials that a seam roof can be made of is zinc-titanium. It is characterized by unsurpassed durability and excellent appearance, but at the same time it is extremely sensitive to mechanical damage. Therefore, the most important point to remember when installing a zinc-titanium seam roof is that the installation should be done as carefully as possible, avoiding impacts or scratching of the sheets. If labeling is required, a marker should be used. Also, work with this material provides for the presence of special

The fence must be not only durable, but also aesthetically attractive, so that the overall appearance of the building does not suffer from its installation. It is recommended to make it from shaped pipes or similar material, painted with polymer powder paint.

When a seam roof is installed, the installation instructions, as well as sanitary norms and rules, must be strictly observed. Only in this case, the roof will become a reliable protector from atmospheric precipitation and provide warmth and comfort in the house for many decades to come.

The seam covering is a surface of metal sheets, the connecting seam of which is formed by a special bending of the edges of the roofing blanks. This type of pairing allows you to get a fairly strong connection. The technique of making a seam roof with your own hands is somewhat different from the known methods of articulating sheet blanks. At the same time, instead of riveting or welding mechanisms, a special seaming machine is used, with the help of which it is possible to form an aesthetically attractive and fairly reliable connection.

Varieties of seam joints

The advantages of this method of arranging sheet coverings include:

  • ease of laying sheet material, characterized by relatively low weight;
  • relatively low cost of blanks from sheet steel;
  • high quality and reliability of connecting seams.

All the advantages mentioned above make it possible to use this technique of forming coatings in the repair of buildings of any profile, as well as in the manufacture of roofs in newly built houses. This method is especially popular in low-rise (private) construction.

We note in passing that when installing the base for the seam coating, a classic “roofing cake” is prepared, which includes elements of hydro, steam and thermal insulation. At the same time, the roofing material itself, cut and laid in the form of strips of rolled steel, has a decorative polymer coating that sets its color scheme.

Steel blanks are laid on the roof sheathing with pre-measured longitudinal strips, which may not always be solid. For high-quality docking of individual strips of flooring, a special type of connection is used - the so-called "lying" fold, which has a flat shape and is hardly noticeable against the background of the coating.

Please note that the longitudinal edges of the blanks are joined by the standing seam method (see figure), which forms a complex convex shape. Note also that in addition to the standard single joint locks with more complex double rebate can be used.

Self-assembly

To prepare any of the joints discussed above, a special mechanism is required - the so-called machine for rolling up the seam. We do not even recommend trying to replace it with any home-made device (or other improvised means), using which it is possible to violate the technology of forming a seam and, as a result, reduce the quality and reliability of the resulting joints.

If it is impossible (or unwilling) to purchase a machine for rolling seams, you can use a roofing kit with already formed edges that provide a self-locking seam lock. The latter consists of a so-called “locking tooth”, which, when one metal strip is applied to another, is easily captured by the hook-shaped profile on it. To obtain a reliable connection, you just need to click the lock, which, as a rule, takes very little time.

The use of ready-made (formed) roofing material greatly simplifies the installation of the coating, and also significantly reduces the time of construction work. To equip a seam roof, in addition to the machine, you will need the following tool kit:

  • screwdriver, metal shears;
  • pincers, mallet and hammer;
  • special gun for sealing seams with sealant.

Mounting Features

When arranging a seam roof, it is necessary to take into account the following features of the organization of installation work:

  1. Regardless of the chosen method of connecting sheet blanks, their fixation on the crate is carried out by means of special clamps, the feature of which is their absolute invisibility.
  2. During installation, each of the stacked panels must face its lower lock in the direction of the next element.

In construction, 2 types of clamps are used: movable and fixed. The movable mount is used when working with sheets longer than 8 meters, and the fixed mount is used for relatively short sheets. These fasteners also include a standard self-tapping screw complete with a press washer.

Roof decking is laid from the bottom up while maintaining a fixed distance between the longitudinal joints. It does not matter which side of the roof to start installation; the main thing to pay attention to is the correct orientation of the lower lock.

Folds are called special seams connecting two metal sheets into a single sheet. In this way, not only roofing is carried out, seam seams are used in the manufacture of metal buckets, drainage systems, pipes, gutters and many other types of metal products. These seams are also found on decorative elements, jewelry.

The name comes from the German fold (Falz) - translated as a groove. In a broader sense, it is used to name the place of the bend of the seam connecting two metal sheets. Seams can be made on factory bending machines or manually. The first method guarantees even surfaces, significantly speeds up the process of roofing. Manual molding of folds is considered the most difficult roofing work and is not performed by all craftsmen.

Depending on the spatial position and the number of bends, seam connections are divided into several types.

Seam typeBrief description of manufacturing technology and performance characteristics

The simplest and most used type of roof lock. Reminiscent of a spike/groove connection. The edge of one sheet is folded at an angle of 90 °, the edge of the second is made with two folds - the first at a right angle, the second at an angle of 180 °. Such a connection can be prepared on the ground, on the roof the sheets are inserted into each other and finally folded to give tightness.

More complex connection. Provides improved sealing performance. It is rarely used on roofs, more often it is used during the manufacture of various metal containers or jewelry. The end of one sheet is folded twice, the first time at a right angle, the second time at an angle of 180 °. The end of the second sheet is folded over three times. First time at a right angle and twice at an angle of 180°.

Simple connection, used as a technological seam of various products for bulk materials. Advantages - ease of execution, the ability to bend folded sheets across the seam in an arc or at various angles. All standing seams do not allow such bends.

Hermetic seam, used during the manufacture of containers for storing liquids. The number of bends is the same as with a double standing one, the difference is that it is not located vertically, but is pressed against the sheets.

Standing seams have high bending strength, lying joints do not withstand vertical loads. All folds of double seams are made on two sheets at the same time. The roofer must first calculate the width of the camber strips and install the sheets with the required offset.

The steel sheet is fixed to the crate with a clamp. This is a metal strip made from the same material as the roof. The clamp is screwed to the crate, then bent at an angle of 90 °, goes around the fold and bends again, but at an angle of 180 °. This technology makes it possible to fasten sheets to the crate without making holes in the roof; it is not used on commercially manufactured folded sheets.

For seam roofing, the industry produces specially rolled metal with a given profile, which greatly speeds up and simplifies the process of roofing. In addition, factory profiles have perfectly flat surfaces and the same dimensions, which significantly improves the appearance of the coating. Finished industrial sheets are called paintings or rebate sheets.

There are two kinds of pictures.

  1. Starting. They are installed first on each side of the roof slope, they have only two spikes.
  2. Privates. Used for the main coating, interconnected in a spike / groove.

To roll up the folds, a hand tool or mechanical seaming devices are used. Manual seaming makes it possible to connect not only straight seams, but also elements of complex configurations. The seamer gives an excellent look and quality of connection, but can only be used on straight sections of the roof.

The width of the panels is standardized, the length is chosen by the customer, taking into account the architectural features of the truss system and the size of the roof.

Seam roofs are not widely used among developers; they are most often found on exclusive buildings or outbuildings. The fold makes it possible to connect sheets to each other without the use of traditional hardware, which eliminates the formation of holes on the surface. It is in these places that metal corrosion occurs most quickly, especially if the rubber gaskets have lost their original hermetic properties.

An important quality of a folded roof is the absence of fastening elements on the surface (in particular, transverse joints when creating a roofing card of any length), which eliminates leaks

Only professionals with extensive experience in the manufacture of various seams and a complete set of special tools and fixtures can mount such roofs. The advantages of seam roofing include the following parameters.

  1. Light weight. The mass of a square meter of coating does not exceed 5-6 kg, the data fluctuate depending on the thickness. Light weight allows you to build a lightweight truss system, which, given the high cost of lumber, significantly reduces the estimated cost of roofing.

    Another plus of the seam roof is the light weight of the entire structure, including the battens and other elements.

  2. Minimum price. For seam roofing, you can buy rolled sheet steel. It is considered a raw material for the manufacture of metal tiles and metal profiles. Accordingly, rolled non-profiled steel is much cheaper than finished products.

  3. The complete absence of holes eliminates mechanical damage to the integrity of the paintings. It is in the holes that corrosion processes quickly appear. In the future, leaks form here, the roof has to be changed or repaired.

Like all architectural elements, seam roofs have their drawbacks.

As for the other common problems (noisiness, high thermal conductivity, static charge accumulation), they are exactly the same as with metal tiles or profiled roofing sheets.

What metals can seam roofs be made of?

The main requirement for metals is that they should easily bend without the formation of microcracks. It is known that microcracks gradually expand, the reason for this phenomenon is metal fatigue. An increase in the size of microcracks can cause leaks. According to their physical characteristics, the following metals are suitable for seam roofing.

Copper

The most expensive seam roofing material is used only on exclusive houses, during the reconstruction of historical buildings and the construction of places of worship. Over time, the copper surface oxidizes and becomes covered with a thin protective film of the original color scheme - patina. This gives the roofs a special prestige and perfection.

Aluminum

The service life is practically unlimited. The surface of aluminum is also covered with a thin layer of oxide, which prevents further aging. The metal is easily bent and stretched, which allows it to be used on roofs with very complex geometries.

Zinc-titanium

An alloy specially adapted to the construction needs, characterized by high corrosion resistance and beautiful appearance. It has a unique self-healing property - all small scratches are tightened. The metal can be drawn without degrading the original physical properties.

Galvanized steel

Structural steels are used for its manufacture, zinc coating is done by hot method. This manufacturing technology increases the life of the roof. For additional anti-corrosion protection and to improve the design look, surfaces can be coated with polymer paints.

Installation of a click-seam roof

The click-fold connection differs from the ordinary one in that it can be hermetically snapped into place without the use of special equipment and tools. The plant provides unique profile bends, which make it possible to speed up the process of laying roofing material.

Depending on the type of roof, a roofing cake is made. For insulated roofs, this is a rather complex and expensive structure; cold roofs are much faster and easier to install.

Seam roofing is commonly understood as a roofing that is made of sheet metal and is interconnected using latches in the form of gutters. In this material, we will talk about how to make a seam roof and what materials are used for this.

The concept of "folded roof"

The method of joining sheet metal for roofing, invented by the Germans, has been popular in our country for a long time. And if more recently, folds were connected manually, now a large number of mechanical and electrical tools are available for seaming them. So the manufacture of a seam roof has become much more convenient and affordable for non-professionals.

Some of the benefits of this coverage include:

  • A small mass that allows you to do without a reinforced truss frame.
  • Tightness, reliable protection against leaks. Due to the absence of through holes, the metal does not corrode for a very long time.
  • If you have the necessary tools, you can assemble the seam roof yourself.
  • The design is equally acceptable for simple roofs with a slight slope, and for roofs of complex configuration.
  • The material goes well with all types of building materials.
  • The service life of such a roof is more than 20 years. Since all joints are securely sealed and the seams are hidden, water does not leak under it, and snow rolls freely from the roof surface.

Minuses

In fairness, it is worth pointing out the disadvantages of a folded roof, which arise mainly as a result of incorrect installation:

  • Since the coating is metal, rain falling on the seam roof creates quite a lot of noise. To avoid this effect, it is recommended to use perfectly even bars for the crate, to which metal sheets will fit snugly.
  • The folds on the roof must be periodically checked and, if necessary, repaired.
  • If during the laying of the roof no snow-retaining devices were provided, the snow will come off it very quickly and intensively.
  • Seam roofing is not represented by a rich variety of colors and textures. However, this is the best option for those who are adherents of minimalism and do not seek to stand out.

Structural elements

First of all, it is necessary to define some terms.

So, rectangular sheets of metal with folds are called roof paintings. From such sheets they are assembled into a seam roof.

The term "fold" is commonly understood as a kind of seam, which is formed as a result of joining individual sheets of material. Such a connection does not need additional sealing with glue or sealants. In addition, such seams perform the function of stiffeners.

Clamps are called special fasteners that are fixed on the base of the roof. They are simple, that is, repeating the shape of the fold, and also movable - they compensate for the thermal expansion of the metal.

Varieties of materials for paintings

There are various types of seam roofing on the market, which have significant differences. In most cases, modern seam roofing is made from materials such as:

  • Steel. There are non-galvanized products, zinc-coated or with an additional polymer layer. Such materials are durable, resistant to oxidation and low price. However, during operation, such a roof gradually loses its luster, so in order to maintain a presentable appearance, it is worth stopping at materials with a color coating. In addition, it is important to ensure that the products are covered with a film to protect them from scratches and damage.
  • Copper. From what material very beautiful roofs are obtained, which literally shine under the sun. It does not grow moss or any other plants. Since copper paintings are quite flexible, they can be used to make roofs of any configuration, from simple to the most complex.

However, this material is quite soft, so it should be handled very carefully. In addition, the cost of copper is quite high.

After some time, a layer of oxides forms on the copper, creating a dark brown film. For this reason, copper roofing is not compatible with any other material.

  • Zinc. Zinc paintings are additionally covered with another protective layer of zinc carbonate. During operation, such a coating becomes silver-gray. However, the service life of such a seam roof is not very long (up to 50 years), therefore, in European countries, such materials are practically not used.
  • Aluminum. This metal is resistant to oxidation, so that seam roofing made of aluminum usually lasts about 100 years. In addition, it has a very beautiful silver color. However, when installing a seam roof made of aluminum, it is worth remembering that it is very susceptible to thermal expansion.
  • Zinc-titanium. The original decision to join together 2 metals made it possible to obtain a material that is distinguished by reliability, ductility, and oxidation resistance. Over time, a layer of patina forms on the alloy, which is very much appreciated by modern designers.
  • Aluzinc. An alloy of zinc with aluminum, which covers steel paintings, provides protection of the material from corrosion in places of mechanical damage, moreover, it is distinguished by the ability to self-repair.
  • Alloy of copper, zinc and titanium. The additional inclusion of copper at a concentration of 0.005% makes it possible to achieve the plasticity of the material, which is so necessary for its profiling.

Coating type

In order to protect the roof from the harmful effects of the environment, a special protective coating is applied to it. In particular, for regions with a very hot and humid climate, where acid rain is frequent and the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is high, folded paintings with a pural coating are best suited.

How seam roofing is made

Pictures for seam roofing can be in the form of individual sheets (cast) or rolls. In our country, it is the cast construction that has gained the greatest popularity. It is very convenient to connect such sheets even without special tools, and the result is a one-piece seamless coating.

As for rolled seam roofs, they appeared quite recently. Such material is a strip equal to the length of the slope, on which there are already prepared edges. When connected, a double seam roof lock is obtained.

There are several designs of paintings for seam roofing:

  1. With two stiffening ribs and a double fold. It is mainly used for industrial construction, for covering warehouse buildings and workshops with various roof slopes. The standard width is 5.57 m, of which the usable area is 5.45 m.
  2. For residential construction, paintings with a double fold and two stiffeners are also used, however, their total width is 3.52 m, and the working width is 3.4 m.
  3. There are paintings with double folds, but without stiffeners. They differ in width - 5.57 m and 3.52 m. They are used in housing construction.

In addition, there are starting, ordinary, parallel and trapezoidal false panels.

Notable Manufacturers

The most reputable manufacturer of seam roofs is the Finnish company Ruukki. In Russia, the Insi plant is engaged in the production of such material. Their products are more affordable, and a fairly wide range of goods is offered.

Seam roof laying technique

The technology of installation of a roof from false panels includes several successive stages.

How to make a base for a roof

Folded paintings can be mounted on a solid or discharged crate. For it, you can use wooden slats or metal profiles. It is noteworthy that the distance between the rafters should not exceed 2.5 meters, so that the sheets do not bend during operation and the folds do not part.

Laying pictures

The selected material, be it cast panels or rolled steel, must be lifted to a height, placed over the crate along the eaves, and fixing should be started from the center.

Production of auxiliary elements

To equip a conic, cornices, valleys, as well as joints with a chimney or window opening, special additional elements will be required. They must either be purchased ready-made, or made from rolled steel yourself.

Making folds

Folds can be single, double, recumbent (horizontal) or standing (vertical).

A double fold means a double bend of the edges. Such a connection is advisable in places of accumulation of snow and rainfall - in valleys, grooves, joints and other structural elements. Such a seam is considered the most reliable.

Lying folds are made if it is necessary to mask the seams between individual panels. In addition, the horizontal connection is also carried out with lying seams, with a maximum girth. Please note that if the grip of the steel strip cannot reach the depth of the rebate, such a seam will weaken over time.

On roofs with a slope of more than 25º, an angular standing seam or L-shaped is used. To perform such an element is even easier than the usual one - you just need to correctly bend the upper edge of the seam.

As for the height of the rebate, it must be such that standing melt water does not penetrate into the connection. Rainfall is not terrible for the folds, but standing snow can bring considerable harm. Consequently, in regions with a large amount of snowfall, the folds are made quite high. In addition, during the laying of paintings in the folds, sealing gaskets are laid. These elements withstand the thermal expansion of the metal and the forces during seaming.

It is worth paying attention to the fasteners - you can only use components with an anti-corrosion coating, otherwise rusty spots will soon form on the roof.

To connect the fingers, a hammer and wooden blocks are used, as well as manual or electromechanical machines. First, the picture is attached to the base with a narrow strip, fixing its position. Then, a recumbent fold is bent in front and behind, and vertical half-folds are folded to the right and left.

The fastening of the folds is carried out mainly with clamps. They are put on 2.5 cm, after which the panels are nailed on the right side. The clamp is made of galvanized steel with a thickness of 0.5-0.7 mm and a length of 80-120 cm. These elements are placed along the edges of the panels in 60 cm increments and screwed with 4.8 × 28 mm self-tapping screws.

So the setup looks like this:

  • the panel is placed on the crate;
  • fix it with clamps;
  • cover on top with another panel;
  • then three layers of metal are bent in one direction, the folds are wrapped up to the stop and pressed.

Thus, a reliable connection is achieved, which protects against cold and water leakage.

The final stage

At the final stage, it is necessary to bend the cut-outs and install additional elements - valleys, aprons, gables, cornices and seam strips.

The difference between professional editing and amateur editing

With certain skills and experience, an amateur can install simple structural elements of the roof with scissors, a mallet and a pipe bender. At the same time, professional builders have a number of special tools in their arsenal - scissors, frames, pliers and other devices. Often, such tools are much more expensive than a folding machine.

It should be noted that semi-automatic tools are currently used for bending folds, which have a number of advantages:

  • ensure connection reliability;
  • work is done very quickly;
  • it is possible to operate with material of any thickness;
  • the polymeric protective layer is not damaged during operation.

At the moment, panels are available on the building materials market, on which the folds are equipped with special locks. That is, a simple click is enough to connect.

Even in the last century, metal flooring was used in the construction of private houses. And this is not surprising, because metal is a wear-resistant, durable material that can withstand significant temperature changes without succumbing to deformation. One of the common types of roofing for country houses is the so-called folded roof. Seam roofing is understood as a material that is combined into a single system by folding. The manufacturer produces sheets already prepared for folding. Builders only need to bend the edges of their sheets during the installation of the roof, while obtaining a reliable connection, completely protected from leaks. Individual residential buildings with such a roof will be safe and sound for a long time and will be passed on to future generations in excellent condition. In this article, we will consider all the pros and cons of a metal roof, get acquainted with the assembly instructions in order to install the seam roof on our own.

Advantages and disadvantages of seam roofing

Before making a choice in favor of a metal coating, you should study all the pros and cons of a seam roof. Distinctive advantages of such roofs are:

  • ease of construction and anti-corrosion properties of the material;
  • non-flammable, has a modern and aesthetic appearance;
  • reliability in operation and durability;
  • lack of seams on the surface of the roof;
  • smooth structure that repels water and snow;
  • guarantee of no leaks;
  • simple, fast and convenient installation.
  • relatively low cost.

Disadvantages:

  • if snow retainers are not installed on the roof, there is a risk of snow avalanche;
  • possibility of formation of icicles due to the high heat capacity of the material;
  • with a strong impact, the surface of the roof can be deformed and leave a dent.

Based on the above list of advantages, we can safely say that seam roofing is an excellent option for those who wish to find a golden mean in the balance between price and quality.

Seam roofing consists of two elements: pictures and clasps.

  • Paintings- these are metal sheets connected to each other into a single structure and having bends at the edges for their subsequent folding.
  • Klammer- this is a small metal plate measuring 150 × 50 mm, the function of which is to securely fasten the roof sheets to the base. In addition, by means of a clamp, a tighter seam seam is achieved, which strengthens the roof as a whole.

Material

The following are the most common materials used for the production of seam roofing:

  • galvanized steel;
  • polymer-coated steel;
  • aluzinc;
  • aluminum;
  • copper.

Compound

Depending on the fastening of the sheets, there are:

  1. standing seam- vertically located to the base plane;
  2. Recumbent seam- horizontally located to the plane of the base.

Also distinguish:

  • A simple fold, in which a single bend of the edge of the sheet is carried out;
  • Double fold, having two bends of the edge of the sheet.
  • In addition to the usual ones, there are self-locking folds, thanks to which the process of joining sheets is very fast and no mechanical tools are required.

Copper seam roof

  • Copper- soft and malleable metal, which has the ability to repel not only water, but also dirt, so the appearance of mold and fungus is excluded in its structure.

By modern standards, copper seam roofing is the leader among coatings. Let's try to figure out why most buyers choose such a roof.

  1. Lightweight processing method. The material easily bends, acquiring the desired shape. Such plasticity facilitates the installation of a copper roof.
  2. Environmentally friendly material. Copper roofing does not require the addition of additional impurities to its composition, since copper is a fairly strong and hard material by nature. Harmful effects on humans and the environment are excluded.
  3. Availability. Unlike any other tile, copper does not need renovation. Buying a metal roof, you save on subsequent repairs.
  4. Anti-corrosion properties. Due to its natural impermeability, copper is not susceptible to temporary changes. In order not to spoil the roof, it is important not to use non-copper products as additional fasteners.
  5. Heat resistance. The roof is fully consistent with the principles of organizing a fire safety system.
  6. Heat conduction. The roof is universal: it heats the house in winter, cools it in summer.
  7. Weather resistance. The material tolerates temperature extremes well. Copper easily withstands temperatures below minus 70 degrees Celsius.
  8. Reliability. The material does not require any special processing. The natural protective film of the metal and the additional factory coating make the seam roof resistant to natural influences.
  9. Ease of maintenance. Bacteria and dirt do not accumulate on roofs. Regular rain helps clean the roof of dirt.
  10. Long service life. The material will last more than one century without losing its operational properties.
  11. Aesthetic appearance. Copper coating with beautiful embossed shapes ennobles the appearance of the building, making it more stylish and attractive.

Preparatory work

  • Before installing the seam covering, it is necessary to prepare the roof for installation. It will take. Be careful in the calculations, due to inaccuracies in the calculations, the roof may turn out to be skewed, which will lead to deformation and violation of the tightness of the roof.

Before the installation device, form the rafters according to the requirements:

  • Choose a quality material for a wooden frame. The rafters must support the weight of the roof.
  • Treat the wood with special protection from external influences and an antiseptic to prevent insect damage. Repeat the procedure at least 2 times.

Treatment of rafters with an antiseptic is the best way to extend their lifespan

  • Install the crate tightly and evenly, at the same distance. Make drawings for the flooring in advance to avoid calculation errors.
  • Preparatory work requires special attention. The distance between the rafters must be narrow so that the structure can withstand the coating.

Properly organized construction of the base and rafters is an additional protection from wind and cold.

Advice! If you want to prevent the formation of frost on the surface in winter, you can install an electric roof heating system.

Before installing a new roof, you need to take care of protecting the wood from moisture. To do this, a special waterproofing membrane is laid on the exposed frame.

Tools for the installation of seam roofing

The most important tool for the installation of seam roofing is a rolling machine. It allows you to accurately determine the size of the roof and make high-quality cutting of sheets.

Professional slicing has a number of advantages over manual slicing:

  • Individual cutting increases the tightness of the roof.
  • The rolling method reduces the amount of waste materials.
  • A cutter with a special cutter has an increased cutting accuracy, which affects the appearance of the facade.

In addition to metal sheets of seam roofing, you will need fasteners. Choose 2 types of clamps: movable and fixed. You will need 4 pieces per square meter of roof.

Important! If copper is used as roofing, fasteners should also be copper to exclude possible chemical reactions of metals.

Interesting to know! Manufacturing plants produce a new type of seam roof - self-latching. In the process of installing this type of roof, even a hammer is not needed.

Do-it-yourself seam roof installation

After completing the installation of the truss system, you can proceed to the direct laying of the sheets, which is carried out according to the general rules for laying the roof. To achieve long-term operation of the roof, you need to consider some details:

  • Make even sheet layouts. The maximum distance between fasteners should not exceed 40 cm.
  • Installation time depends on the experience of the master and the scale of work. For a small house, a team of specialists will be able to lay the roof in just one day.
  • If you are laying a roof for the first time, do not rush. Be guided by the rule "measure seven times, cut one."

Installation of metal sheets of seam roofing is possible both on a pre-made crate and on a flat base and comes down to joining the sheets into a single structure using a seaming machine or a hand tool.

  1. First, a layer of waterproofing anti-condensation membrane is laid on the base.
  2. Roofing sheets are then laid alternately on the waterproofed base and sequentially connected by folding. To do this, at the joints, a clamp is placed under one of the sheets to be joined and fixed with dowels, nails or other fasteners on the base.
  3. Then the free part of the clamp is rolled into a seam seam formed by the imposition of two adjacent roofing sheets, using a seaming machine or a hand tool (two mallets).

Thus, a single durable waterproof structure is obtained, which does not have a single hole on its surface.

If the installation is done correctly and the roofing sheets are firmly pressed to the base, then the roof will be reliable for many years to come.

Mounting methods

Seam roof installation can be done in two ways. Each method provides a certain sequence of work. Installation instructions for a seam roof using traditional technology are performed in the following sequence:

  • All roofing elements are manufactured according to the drawings. Cut out small and large folds.
  • Finished sheets rise to the roof and are fixed with clamps.
  • After completion of the work, other protruding parts of the roof are covered with residual materials.
  • For roofs with large slopes, sheets are used, the length of which can reach 10 meters or more. Their installation takes more time due to the volume of materials. For such work, several people will be needed, since it is almost an impossible task to lift the sheet onto the roof alone.

Time does not stand still, and traditional styling methods are being replaced by modern ones. So some types of seam roofing are mounted in a roll way, which greatly facilitates the installation.

Sheets of metal that roll vertically do not require horizontal cutting and additional fasteners. This method allows you to save the roof from leaking.

When connecting sheets with a seam seam, do not forget to use silicone sealant. This will provide the roof with reliable protection against leaks.

The modern way of laying has a number of advantages over the traditional way:

  • It is possible to adjust the length of the sheets.
  • Marking and cutting is done by a rolling machine.
  • Minimal use of connecting fasteners.
  • The small size of roofing sheets simplifies the work of the master. There is no need to load huge plates on the roof. The length can be made according to an individual sketch, which improves the appearance of the house.

Ridge and junction device

When the installation of the main surface of the roof is completed, the master proceeds to install the ridge at the junction of the roof. The ridge is fixed with self-tapping screws.

Further, at the junctions of pipes and walls, an adjacent plank is installed. To avoid leaks during rain, the adjoining bar is installed closer to the wall, covering all holes. Usually, silicone adhesive-sealant is used for its fastening.

In accordance with safety regulations, the roof railing should be installed at an angle of 12 degrees.

Snow guards for seam roofs

The seam roof is a smooth material, therefore, the organization of snow-resistant devices is additionally required. Stop mounts are needed not only for the sake of maintaining the coating, but also for human safety. The standard snow retainer is 3 meters long.

  1. The most popular - tubular structures, installed parallel to each other. Pipes withstand any load.
  2. Another option is brackets mounted perpendicular to the slope. The distance between the holes is adjustable depending on the length of the slope and the size of the roof itself.

Advice! In order not to make a mistake with the installation and protect yourself and others from falling snow, when buying snow retainers, consult with the seller about the method of placing pipes.

Experts with extensive experience in roofing work recommend not to undertake to lay the roof on their own without a minimum building experience. If you decide to install the seam roof with your own hands, then follow the advice of the masters:

Thanks to the wavy shape of the seam roof, the roof of your house will always be distinguished by its unique design.

Seam roofing has been successfully used for more than one century, but for a long time builders preferred other types of roofs, and only now interest in this roof has increased again. The obvious proof is a large number of houses in Russia that have a durable and beautiful metal coating above the walls.
