The platbands for the arched windows are wide. Platbands for plastic windows - what is, why are they needed and how to install

Greetings, dear readers!

I decided to write an article that will help answer all your questions about cashing windows with a tree. Many times I have heard questions: "How to properly sew up the slopes with a tree?" "How to make slopes so that water does not fall under them during rain?" "How to choose the right addition and ebb tide?"

In this article, I want to give answers to all these questions and more in order to avoid mistakes when wooden casing windows.

Whatever your house was built from, but wooden platbands will create an antique interior. By choosing straight trims, you can achieve a high-tech style. The window frame gives the house charisma, completeness. Perhaps that is why wooden cashing is now very popular again.

Wooden window casing has both practical and aesthetic value. Our ancestors also made cashing of windows with a tree, believing that in this way they would save their house from evil spirits, which, as they believed, penetrate into the house from the window openings.

Slopes of windows in a wooden house: which ones to prefer?

The annual shrinkage of the house, as well as the peculiarities of the geometry of the windows in a wooden house, have a certain influence on the choice of which is the best to make the slopes of the windows in a wooden house. Of course, with certain knowledge and skills, any material can be suitable for slopes, but how best to implement this - we will talk below.

Features of wooden structures of houses

Unlike brick or stone buildings, in wooden houses, window slopes are more susceptible to deformation. Their size is influenced by many factors, such as fluctuations in temperature and humidity, the shrinkage process of a house made of rounded or planed timber. Such changes occur throughout the entire service of the slopes, which is why special designs are used here.

Manufacturing of slopes (okosyachka)

The preparation stage begins with the manufacture of a strong and rigid structure, the task of which is to serve as a kind of protection for the frame and glass from deformations caused by the weight of the building structure. Here, the entire load is taken on by a rigid structure, made exactly according to the dimensions of the window opening.

This design does not affect the shrinkage of the building or the evaporation of excess moisture from the material of the newly assembled house, it only restrains the pressure on the window partition. Carpenters call such a construction a "jib", without which in a wooden house not a single installation of slopes can do.

Thanks to this technology, a wide variety of windows can be built into wooden walls: from traditional wooden windows to modern plastic ones. For the latter, plastic window slopes in a wooden house will be an ideal style continuation. Building plastics have excellent stiffness and can actually handle a decent amount of stress. Therefore, it is not only a modern and aesthetic material, but also very practical.

Other options

Slopes in a house made of wood can be decorated not only with a "window". Finishing with a block house or clapboard, although not so reliable, is more consistent with the type of building. With the help of these materials, a transverse finish is performed, and special corners made of wood are mounted in the corners of the slope, which take the main load.

The use of plastic is preferable for several reasons, including its availability and greater suitability for typical metal-plastic windows from different manufacturers.

The construction of a house begins with the installation of the foundation, and finishing work in the house begins with the installation of windows. Installation of windows in a wooden house requires special preparatory work! It will focus on the installation of windows in timber-framed and log houses.

For wooden houses, after assembling them, it takes time for the walls to shrink, which occurs due to the drying out (evaporation of excess moisture) of the wooden walls. This happens most intensively in the first year after assembling the walls of a wooden house (with the exception of houses made of laminated veneer lumber).

To install windows in a wooden house, it is required to make and install an additional rigid structure that would protect the window frame from the pressure of the walls of the house settling from above, but would not prevent the walls themselves from settling. This design is called a siege, i.e. window and door openings in a wooden house.

Previously, in wooden houses, such a casing immediately had a double function, being at the same time a protective structure and a window frame, the window sashes were attached directly to the casing (an additional window frame was not needed), and doors were also hung.

The opening of the opening requires certain skills and abilities, it is a rather complex structure, it is assembled without nails and is the final finish of the opening, does not require additional finishing work. Has a high manufacturing and installation cost.

Note!

Currently, the installation of windows in a wooden house is carried out using a casing of a simplified design, but it does not lose its main function - to protect the window or door frame from jamming and distortions, due to the shrinkage of the wooden walls of the house.

The windows are installed by attaching them directly to the previously installed casing. Thus, a constructive window or door block is obtained independent of the shrinkage of the house.

We do - install the technological casing - cut openings for finishing. Using a block of 50x50 mm and a board of 50 x 150; 200; 250 mm.

  • For window openings, a profile is used: T - shaped.
  • For doorways, the profile is T or U-shaped.

After installing the window, it is required to make additional finishing of the slopes, install a window sill, and for doors, add-ons, install platbands. You can choose any material for the slopes: wood, plastic, MDF panel or custom-made.

Therefore, the production of a real "village" -sound in a log block loses its relevance if there is no specific task to install a window or door, as it was previously done in village huts.

Practice shows that lumber or log houses that have stood for more than three years, as a rule, have already completely stabilized in their shrinkage. In such wooden houses, rigid attachment of the openings to the walls of the house is allowed.

This does not bear any negative consequences, but only saves the developer's money. At the same time, the protective functions of the structure are not lost - protection of a window or door from possible subsequent insignificant wall pressure from above, which is associated with seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity of the surrounding air.

Questions from our readers about wooden windows.

Wooden windows for cottages. Are these any special windows?

Of course not. The glazing features of cottages stem from the individuality of each house. If you have, for example, a house made of timber or a log cabin, wooden windows must be fastened not with eyelets (long strong screws), but with anchor plates. This method of fastening is especially common in the saunas of Odessa.

In the early years, a log house gives a noticeable shrinkage and wooden windows on plates will float along with the walls. The risk of jamming and twisting is eliminated. Slopes and platbands in a log house are always made on site and are very individual. Our experts will take into account all the little things that can spoil the joy of a new home later.

If the house is stone, then during laying there are often deviations from the design openings. It happens that the quarters (protrusions in the opening of the window box) do not meet the necessary requirements, or even are completely absent. It is important, together with the builders, to calculate and agree on the dimensions of the balcony doors and the height of the black and clean floors, the compatibility of window sills and heating radiators, etc.

Useful advice!

Based on our own practice, we recommend that customers order and install window sills and mosquito nets only after installing wooden windows and heating appliances, when all the functional features of each room are finally clarified.

This allows you to optimize costs and protect window sills from damage during finishing work. To an experienced builder, such details may seem insignificant, but, believe me, most of the troubles are hidden in unaccounted for trifles.

What if first the wooden windows were installed, and then the builders started finishing work?

If the house is undergoing wet work (plastering, screed, etc.), wooden windows must be opened for ventilation at least 15 minutes a day, otherwise a sauna effect is created, which is extremely negatively reflected on wooden surfaces.

A large house is a space for the design imagination of all family members; this is a different purpose of rooms, different furniture, different tastes. The combined color technology makes it possible to make wooden windows the same on the outside, multi-colored on the inside.

Our customers are happy to choose their color of wooden windows for different rooms according to the Tikkurila palette (pink bedroom, blue nursery, crimson fireplace room), and what looks eclectic in a city apartment, in a spacious house with many rooms, is striking with freshness and dynamism.

If you are building a House, your life is woven of many worries and worries. Inevitably, you have to become a construction specialist, deal with the plinth and piping, the quality of roofing work and the efficiency of the sewer system, etc. Wooden windows are one of the worries.

How will they behave in the cold (after all, the climate outside the city is always harsher than in Moscow, how will the shrinkage of the house affect the windows; finally, what care will they require in a few years? Even if two wooden windows do not close tightly, this is already a problem, And if there are twenty-two, thirty-two, forty-two? Believe me, your wooden windows are our concern first of all. Therefore, we offer all owners of cottages special conditions for servicing wooden windows.

Wooden houses (timber, log) have been incredibly popular in the last 2-3 years. Modern technologies have eliminated the disadvantages of wood - fire hazard and susceptibility to decay. Thanks to special processing and impregnation, the main advantage of pine houses is emphasized - a favorable healthy microclimate.

This is not rhetoric - we are all looking for salvation from the monstrous city press in a country house. Press of dust, smog, gasoline fumes and traffic jams; press of dead air in stuffy offices.

Due to the difference between the external and internal pressure of the atmosphere, the air slowly seeps through the wood structure, simultaneously acquiring optimal humidity and saturating with resinous filters. In a log (log) house it is always easy to breathe and sleep well. Now we already know the price of this - the pace of life does not even increase every year, but every month - and we do not build houses for show, we build them for ourselves.

Although, of course, we are biased. Wooden windows and wooden houses - they have so much in common! After all, wooden windows, placed even in an ordinary city apartment, dramatically improve the microclimate, create tightness without isolation.

Features of glazing of wooden houses:

  1. Wooden houses shrink perceptibly.
    If you insert windows into a fresh house, they will simply be squeezed out by a shrinking frame. Of course, you can wait several years until the shrinkage is complete or insert temporary windows - but there is another way out. Are inserted, the so-called. "Casing" - wooden boxes between the wall and the window. The "siege" "floats" along with the wall, carefully keeping the window inside itself. If the casing is made not from simple boards, but to match the color of the window, then the second problem is also solved.
  2. Platbands and slopes.
    Saving at this point will lead to the fact that the delicate joints of the window and the wall will be sewn up with slats, boards, etc. The gentle music of the wooden house will be ruined. External joints of windows and walls in a brick house are usually finished with plaster; internal slopes are either plastered or sheathed with plastic - only wood is suitable in a wooden one. Remember the patterned platbands on Russian huts? This is not only decoration, but also a practical necessity.
  3. An interesting feature of wooden windows is that they "ask" for binding.
    The inexplicable coziness emanating from the log (squared) walls I want to emphasize, strengthen with something. The binding instantly "domesticates" the walls, makes the house your own, unique, inimitable.

The binding can be different - glued (external) slabs, mortise slabs, dividing the window into sashes with an upper transom, etc. The sticky crochet is especially beautiful - it is thin, graceful and allows you to "play" with a large glass space.

Although bill binding, alas, is not cheap, few people save on it. Look at the photographs, remove the binding in your mind - how immediately the house grows dull and dull, losing its warm charm.

Note!

The glazing features of cottages stem from the individuality of each house. If you have a house made of timber (logs), wooden windows must be fastened not with eyelets (long strong screws), but with anchor plates.

A log (log) house gives a noticeable shrinkage in the first years and wooden windows on the plates will float along with the walls. The risk of jamming and twisting is eliminated. Slopes and platbands in a log (log) house are always made on site and are very individual. Our experts will take into account all the little things that can spoil the joy of a new home later.

Cashing on wooden windows: the main tasks

Cashing on wooden windows performs two important tasks - decorative and practical.

As for the decorative, everything is more or less clear with it - it adds naturalness and light tradition to the interior. As for the cashing functionality, this element is designed to increase the insulating characteristics of the window (eliminate drafts, increase thermal insulation, sound insulation), as well as hide the technical details of the window installation.

The latter is especially true if you install the windows with your own hands, or if the masters you invited are faced with the fact that the opening for the window is far from ideal (for example, the structure "led" over time).

How to make the right choice

The factors that must be taken into account when choosing cashing for wooden windows are few. However, each of them should be constantly in your field of vision. Otherwise, this element will not perform any of the tasks assigned to it.

  • Harmony of design.
    When choosing a cashing, it is important to take into account the dominant color scheme in the interior, texture features. Of course, cashing should not completely repeat the colors and textures already present in the interior, but it is simply obliged to follow the general idea. Otherwise, the windows will be “knocked out of the picture”.
  • Harmony of size.
    It is fundamentally important that the cashing on the windows in a wooden house is correlated in width with the window itself (interior door). The standard window allows the use of cash, the width of which is from 3 to 5 cm. If the window is atypical - for example, narrow and high, or small, "dormer" - you can deviate from these indicators in favor of narrowing the used cash. But too wide cashing should be used only if you are faced with the task of highlighting a window in the interior, or, on the contrary, to hide it by “dissolving” it in the wall. In the latter case, it makes sense to focus on wide decorative casings, carved or painted.
  • Volume harmony.
    In the vast majority of cases, internal cashing is done flat, from a regular board. However, when creating exclusive interiors, the use of bulk cash may be justified. As a rule, we are talking about carved, decorative elements. It should only be taken into account that volumetric cashing on windows in a wooden house visually narrows the room, so this solution is suitable only for spacious rooms.
  • Harmony of protection.
    Cashing, as well as external platbands, needs competent processing. First of all, we are talking about antibacterial and fireproof impregnations, as well as external painting. Cash should be processed taking into account the conditions in which it will be used - for example, on the sunny side, cash should be protected from the destructive effects of ultraviolet radiation, on the shady side - from the negative effects of moisture.

Making cash with your own hands

The enclosure is manufactured as a monolithic frame-shaped structure. Before installing this frame on the window, all the casing elements are connected together in order to exclude subsequently the drying out and deformation of the structure.

To connect the cashing elements on wooden windows, it is best to use the “thorn-groove” system of our own production, or using a fastening thorn made of the same type of wood. But it is better to refuse glue: adhesives in this capacity do not stand up to criticism, quickly (in two or three years) losing all their qualities.

To create decorative casings or external platbands for a wooden house, you will need a small set of tools:

  1. cutter;
  2. a wedge-shaped knife, the sharp part of the blade of which is 30 degrees;
  3. corner chisel with a blade width of 5 to 15 mm (it is best to use several of different sizes);
  4. narrow chisel with a blade width of up to 5 mm;
  5. curved chisels, with an angle from 50 to 70 degrees, with a blade width of up to 15 mm.

You can choose a pattern for carved cashing yourself, taking into account the interior and your capabilities.

Useful advice!

The upper part of the cash can be wider than the side ones (but remember that any expansion of the cash will visually reduce the space) - this phenomenon is called "kokoshnik" in traditional culture. "Kokoshnik" was often not only decorated with carvings, but also performed in totem form (sun, bird, bear, etc.).

However, internal cashing (as opposed to external platbands) is usually performed in a simpler version in order to ensure the fulfillment of the main - protective - function of this element.

When creating cashing for windows in a wooden house, remember that it is undesirable to overload the interior with decorative elements. That is why two or three motives used for decorating windows are more than enough. If cashing is created for several windows of the same interior, it is better to combine decorative solutions with each other.

Decorative platbands can be created using both woodcarving and painting. But the colors and carvings must be in harmony with each other.

It is possible to decorate the cashing and external platbands, including by firing. True, this should be done very carefully, and after such decoration, carefully go over the entire casing with protective compounds. Then the resulting effect will persist for many years.

Regular renewal of the protective layer on your casings and outer platbands is a guarantee of the longevity of the beauty created by your hands.

Window frames: materials and advantages

The performance properties of products are determined by the materials from which they are made. We use the following types of wood:

Natural solid wood: oak, pine or larch;

For inside slopes, glued solid - lamellar materials with and without knots;

Window sills: plastic white or colored, wooden from pine and larch.

Pine - a budget solution, which is distinguished by an affordable price and average performance characteristics;

larch - is characterized by high strength and resistance to weathering, temperature changes;

oak - in addition to high performance properties, it is highly valued for its beautiful woody structure.

For framing the openings, glued wood is used from the inside, and solid wood is used on the outside.

The cost of wooden platbands can be higher than the price of plastic counterparts, but their quality and durability combined with style justify the difference.

"MSK Drevo" - production, installation and painting of wooden platbands for windows, made of solid pine, larch, oak and glued coniferous wood.

Platbands for windows in a wooden house are a functional window decoration that allows for a wall. This helps protect wooden structures from moisture penetration and blowing, reduce heat loss at home, and improve sound insulation. Installing platbands with decorative elements is a great opportunity to add aesthetic appeal to your home.

For the manufacture of platbands, wood is traditionally used - this material is ideally combined with the external appearance of a wooden house. But on the modern market, there are also products made of plastic that are resistant to external influences.

According to the principle of installation, overhead (classic) and telescopic designs are distinguished. In the first case, the planks are applied and fixed around the window opening, overlapping the joint. The second option is mounted without fasteners (screws or nails), since there is a special ridge in its design, which is inserted into the gap between the casing and the window opening.

The telescopic platband is more difficult to manufacture and install, but it looks more aesthetically pleasing, since there are no fastener caps on the front part. In addition, the gap between the window and the opening closes more reliably. If the frames are inserted flush with the outer edge of the casing, the casing strips will also cover the joint between the window structure and the casing.

Telescopic casing

Material selection

Natural wood is widely used to create platbands because:

  • affordable;
  • lends itself well to processing;
  • allows you to make platbands with your own hands, including carved ones;
  • easy to install;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • aesthetic;
  • organically complements the appearance of a wooden building.

The disadvantage of wooden platbands is the susceptibility of wood to external influences - so that the window decoration does not lose its attractiveness and functionality, it is required to regularly update its protective and decorative coating. It can be water-repellent paint or varnish.

Plastic platbands have their own advantages:

  • resistance to external influences (do not fade in the sun, do not deform during temperature changes, are not afraid of moisture);
  • biological resistance (do not rot, are not damaged by insects);
  • a wide range of colors and shades (you can choose the platbands in the color of the frame of the installed window or a shade suitable for the walls);
  • are supplied with a hidden fastening system;
  • do not require special care;
  • durable.

The disadvantages include the inability to make carved platbands on our own - they will have to be ordered. In addition, many consider this material not environmentally friendly and therefore incompatible with the very idea of building a wooden house.

Selection and installation of plastic platbands

If metal-plastic windows are installed in a wooden house, you can order platbands made of polymer materials, or purchase plastic moldings with a suitable surface design. The material of manufacture is:

  • sheet plastic;
  • polyurethane.

Plastic sheet is only suitable for flat cover strips.

From PVC and polyurethane, you can make relief structures, original carved platbands that will decorate the facade of the house.

The most convenient in installation are platbands, equipped with mounting strips, on which an external decorative element is put on and snapped on. Installing a simple plastic window frame involves the following steps:

  • Check the moldings for the platbands and the fastening strips to make sure that there is no damage to the lock;
  • Measure the window frame. To the height of the frame and to the width of the frame, add two widths of the planks - this will create a closed frame around the entire perimeter of the window. If an ebb is provided at the bottom, add another plank width to the frame height.
  • Cut the plastic molding into lengths corresponding to the calculations.
  • The corners of the platbands should be cut strictly at 45 degrees to form precise and aesthetic joints.
  • Make a markup and above the window, attach a piece of a mounting plate of a suitable size using self-tapping screws.
  • Insert the ridge of the casing into the grooves and press until it clicks into place.
  • Using the same principle, install the side strips first, then the lower one. It is important to achieve precise alignment of the elements.

Custom-made original plastic frames can be mounted in the same way or have a telescopic design - in this case, the fastening part of the frame is inserted into the gap between the window frame and the opening.

Manufacturing of wooden platbands

For the manufacture of platbands, wood of different species is used. The most durable products are obtained from oak or beech, which are characterized by a high density of structure. At the same time, you will be able to make only simple platbands from them with your own hands - you will need to use a milling machine to cut the pattern. Hand carving in solid oak and beech wood is a very laborious task.

An intricate framing of the window will allow you to create a linden - a soft tree lends itself to a cutter, without chipping. But the figured linden frame needs to be soaked with an antiseptic of high quality, covered with a reliable waterproof varnish for 2-3 layers and renewed the coating at least once a season, since such wood is hygroscopic and quickly collapses without treatment.

The available materials for the manufacture of window frames include pine, alder, birch, aspen. Such wood lends itself to processing with hand tools, products in the future require only basic care.

To make beautiful platbands, use a drill with wood drills and a jigsaw - manual or electric. The pattern is cut according to a pre-prepared stencil. It is advisable to arrange the carved elements along the grain of the wood in order to protect the product from cracking.

When milling planks by machine, the pattern is not cut through - the wood is selected to a given depth, as a result of which a relief pattern is created. The same effect can be achieved with a hand tool, but it takes a lot of skill.

On the construction market there are smooth and profiled platbands, as well as molded products with figured carvings. For their manufacture, one-piece or glued beams are used. The material for framing windows must be well dried so that the product does not warp during operation.

The framing consists of the following elements:

  • the top bar ("kokoshnik") 3-4 cm thick, if you want to add a decorative design, it is built up, fastening the parts with wooden spikes;
  • side strips 3-4 cm thick, if necessary, build up in the lower part using decorative elements;
  • lower plank ("towels") - its thickness should be 1 cm higher than the thickness of the upper plank, it is attached at an angle to ensure water drainage.

Platbands are made strictly to the size of each window. If the sashes open outward, the platbands should not interfere with this, which should be taken into account when taking measurements. At the same time, visually, the frame contour should not peek out from behind the casing. All windows of the house are decorated in the same style.

Installation of wooden platbands

The prepared carved framing elements and planks are treated with an antiseptic, and then, during installation, they are interconnected with wooden spikes set on synthetic glue. The same glue is sure to coat the joints of all parts to be joined. Do not use organic adhesive - if it gets wet, it can become a breeding ground for fungus.

Before installing the overhead window decoration, make sure that the gap between the window and the opening is filled. It is important that the installation site of the platband is a flat surface. Check if the edge of the casing is protruding beyond the plane of the wall. If the wall is made of logs, the protruding edges of the ends that form the opening should be cut at an angle and further treated with an antiseptic and stain so that they acquire the same color as the entire wall.

The overlay frame is mounted in three ways:

  • on nails or screws;
  • on deaf thorns;
  • on through thorns.

The easiest way is to nail down wooden elements. If you pre-drill small recesses in the platbands for metal fasteners, then after installation, the holes with recessed caps are filled with a mixture of small sawdust and glue, sanded and treated with stain and varnish (or painted) along with the frame.

Spike joints differ slightly - in the second case, a hole for a spike is drilled through the casing, which simplifies the task. Markings are made on the wall and holes are drilled for the spikes, on which the platbands are put on. The attachment points are lubricated with synthetic glue.

The number of fasteners is determined depending on the size and weight of the frame. Carved elements make the product heavier. Attachment points are located around the perimeter.

Platbands are special strips for hiding assembly joints between the window frame and the wall. In addition to its direct purpose, platbands can be used to decorate the window and facade of the house. To choose the right platbands and make their correct installation, read our article.

The main rule when choosing platbands is that their material matches the material of the window. If you have a wooden window, then the platband should be wooden, if it is plastic, then plastic. Although there are exceptions, in the form of a successful combination of platbands and windows made of different materials.

Wooden platbands

Wooden platbands are made of strips with a thickness of at least 30 centimeters. The width of the wooden platbands can be different, depending on the profile pattern and design. The profile pattern of simple wooden platbands is made using a milling machine.
Advantages: affordable price, easy installation.
Disadvantages: poor design, poor resistance to moisture and temperature extremes, the need for regular painting or varnishing.
Release form: rounded or beveled strips with a convex pattern, or smooth, 1.5-2 meters long.
Application area: hiding assembly seams on wooden windows. Additional protection of seams from environmental factors.

Carved platbands

Carved wooden platbands are made by hand or using a jigsaw. There are many options for the platband pattern: from simple ornament to sacred symbols that protect the house from evil spirits. Self-production of carved platbands is a job that requires skills in carpentry. If you want to make platbands with your own hands, but have no experience, choose a pattern without complex elements.
Advantages: very beautiful appearance, the ability to improve the facade of the house without significant financial investments.
Disadvantages: high price, complexity of manufacturing, fragility, the need for regular painting.
Release form: depending on an individual order or a design developed by the manufacturer.
Application area: decoration of windows and the facade of the house, hiding assembly seams.

Plastic platbands

Plastic planks are the generic name for planks made of plastic, PVC and foam. Platbands made of plastic are often included in the set of installed plastic windows. Due to the specifics of the production of this type of platbands, they cannot be made at home. Plastic platbands can have a regular or carved pattern. The strips are mounted on special fasteners, liquid nails, glue or double-sided tape.
Advantages: resistance to moisture, long-term operation, easy installation.
Disadvantages: fragility of some products, small choice of design when imitating carved platbands.
Release form: smooth, carved or profiled strips, 1.5-2.5 meters long.
Application area: hiding assembly seams on plastic, sometimes wooden windows. Additional protection of assembly seams from environmental factors.

Platbands from MDF

Due to the low resistance to moisture, it is recommended to use Medium Density Fiberboard trims only for interior window decoration. MDF trims are great for wood windows, especially if they match the color and texture of the wood. The platbands are fastened with nails, screws or glue.
Advantages: low price, good appearance.
Disadvantages: poor resistance to moisture, inability to use for external decoration.
Release form: smooth, rounded or profile-patterned strips, 1-3 meters long.
Application area: interior decoration of wooden or plastic windows.

Aluminum platbands

Platbands made of aluminum are mainly designed to hide assembly seams, when installing windows and stained-glass windows made of the same material. In appearance and design, aluminum platbands strongly resemble plastic strips. Fastening of aluminum platbands is carried out on a special profile or latches.
Advantages: strength, durability.
Disadvantages: poor combination with windows made of other materials.
Release form: aluminum strips with a different type of pattern except carved, 1.5-2.5 meters long.
Application area: exterior and interior decoration of windows and stained-glass windows made of aluminum.

Making platbands with your own hands

You can make platbands yourself only from wood. To do this, you will need a special tool and wooden planks.

Simple platbands

To make simple wooden platbands, you will need:

  • Electric jigsaw.
  • Plane (simple or electric).
  • Sander.
  • Milling cutter (manual or machine).
  • Fine-grained sandpaper.
  • Wooden planks with a section of 30x100 mm.

Manufacturing technology of simple platbands:

  1. Work all sides of the wooden planks with a plane.
  2. Install the profile accessory on a handheld or stationary machine.
  3. Finish the front side of the trim with a router bit.
  4. Finish the trims with sandpaper or a sander.

In the absence of a milling machine, platbands with a smooth surface can be made. To do this, use a planer to cut the front side of the plank at an angle of 20-30 degrees and grind it with sandpaper.

Carved platbands

If you are going to make wooden platbands with a carved pattern, keep in mind that this is not a quick business and requires "iron" patience. To create carved platbands, in addition to basic tools, you will need a set of special chisels with different blade shapes and a hand jigsaw. To make it easier to navigate in a large selection of patterns, below are some templates for cutting:

Carved platbands can be made in two ways - conventional and overhead. In the usual way, the pattern is cut directly on the casing itself. In the overhead method, the pattern is made in the form of overlays, at least 10 millimeters thick, after which the overlay is attached to the main casing. For beginners, it is recommended to use the overlay method, because in the event of an unsuccessful pattern, the overlay can be replaced with a new element.

The correct choice of wood species for the carved platband is very important. It is easier to carve softwoods because they are soft. Platbands made of hard larch species will last longer.

If you have not done wood carving, choose a very simple pattern for the first time and, as your skill increases, move on to more complex patterns.

Stages of making a carved platband by an overhead method:

  1. Prepare the base for the platband, for this, process the strips with a thickness of 30 millimeters with a plane.
  2. Make overhead strips at least 10 centimeters thick.
  3. Draw the elements of the future pattern on thick paper or cardboard.
  4. Cut out the pattern with scissors.
  5. Place the cut out stencil on the overhead strip and transfer the design to it.
  6. Use a drill and a jigsaw to make grooves along the lines.
  7. Finish the edges of the grooves with chisels, round the edges and finish the contours.
  8. Sand the finished cover piece.
  9. Install the trim over the main platband, securing it with glue or nails.
  10. Having collected all the overhead elements in one composition, proceed to the installation of platbands on the window.

Installation of platbands

Installation of wooden platbands

You can install wooden platbands on the window using nails, screws or glue. The slats are attached to the sides and top of the frame. In some cases, the platband is also installed on the lower part of the window, if this is provided for by the design.
For a beautiful joining of simple platbands, their edges are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. This can be done with a hacksaw and a miter box.
In the case of a deep location of the window in the opening, the platbands can be placed on the wall using extensions.

Fixing the platband to the wall depends on the material from which it is made. For a wooden wall, it will be enough to use nails or screws, for a concrete or brick wall - dowel screws.

Installation of carved platbands mainly depends on their design and composition. Docking of carved platbands is performed in such a way as not to disturb the overall pattern.

After installation, the platbands are treated with wood impregnation, then painted or varnished.

Installation of plastic and aluminum platbands

Correct installation of plastic and aluminum platbands requires a special installation profile that is attached to the frame. Platbands are installed in a groove located on the profile. In the absence of a profile, the platbands are installed on snap fasteners attached to the frame or wall. In rare cases, plastic trims can be fixed with glue, but this type of fastening is unreliable.

When using telescopic platbands, fastening is carried out by inserting the edge of the strip into the groove located on the frame.

Foam platbands, attached only with glue.

Any owner dreams of making his home memorable and beautiful. If the house is no longer new, it is not so easy. One of the possibilities is carved platbands. They will even turn an ordinary "box" into a masterpiece.

Material for platbands

Carved platbands are made mainly of coniferous wood. The best option is pine, it is normally cut, inexpensive, due to its high resin content, it is durable. In principle, you can use any other coniferous board, but it is better not to try with spruce: it is too fibrous, it cannot be cut even with the sharpest tool.

You can also make carved platbands from hardwood - linden (the softest), poplar, maple, oak, cherry, etc. But you need to know how to work with each species, get your hands on it, and there is no guarantee that something digestible will turn out, and hardwood is expensive. Therefore, window frames are often made of pine. You just need to pay attention to the quality characteristics.

Carved window trims - a way to make your home unique

If there is wood or a board that has lain for 3 years or more, you can use it: it is already definitely dry, only processing and calibration will be required. If there is no woodworking equipment at home (thicknesser and circular saw), an edged board will be needed. Wood of the first or highest grade is suitable for carved platbands. This means that there should be no knots, chips, or resin pockets on the board. Take wood from a chamber drying, with a moisture content of no more than 8-12%. This is not for sale in the markets, you need to look for it at sawmills and in hardware stores.

Why chamber drying? Because it is dried in a special chamber, rapidly removing moisture. At the same time, some of the boards crack, bend - these go to rejection, the rest are sold. If you make carved platbands from oven-dried wood, they will definitely not be crumpled and they will not crack.

Tools

To make carved platbands with your own hands, you will need the following minimum set:

  • drill with a set of drills;
  • an electric jigsaw with a smooth start and a bunch of different wood saws;
  • chisels;
  • sandpaper with different grain sizes;
  • flap disc made of sandpaper for wood on a drill.

To reduce the time it will take to create carvings and sanding, it is better to have a router and sander.

One by one or in bulk?

Carved platbands usually consist of repeating elements. At least two vertical strips on each window are made the same. And since usually several windows are drawn up, many identical elements are required. If the platbands are going to make slotted, naturally there is a desire to cut out several pieces at the same time, folding the boards in a pile and somehow fixing them.

The desire is understandable, but difficult to realize, and the benefits over time are not as great as it seems. The first difficulty is that home craftsmen usually have jigsaws of not too high power. To cut through several planks, you have to move the file more slowly along the intended pattern. On straight lines the speed is still tolerable, on curves it is low. And, the smaller the bending radius, the slower you have to move the file. If you work with one board, there are no such problems. So, in terms of time, the gain, if there is, is quite small.

One more point. Even thick, good, expensive files are deflected with a large thickness of the workpiece. So, when cutting several boards at the same time, the quality of the cut on the bottom (or two) remains a big question.

The procedure for making a platband with a slotted thread

Using a template, transfer the desired drawing to the board (where to get it, how to enlarge it, how to make a template, read below). If necessary, we correct, draw the details well. Next, we will describe the procedure step by step.

We remove the wood in the slots of the picture

Since the carving will be looked at from afar, some inaccuracies are not fatal, but it is still worth striving for the ideal.

Making a curly edge

Some platbands have a straight edge. Then we skip this stage. If the edge is curly, you will still have to work with a jigsaw.

If the cut is difficult, it may not be very attractive places. This is not scary, then we will process them where necessary - with chisels, the same jigsaw, emery. When you are satisfied with the result, you can move on.

Final revision

The owners of wooden houses probably know everything about how to handle wood. But, just in case, let's repeat the general rules again.

The choice of paints and varnishes is very wide. Any for outdoor work. But keep in mind that opaque paints will have to be renewed periodically - just like that once a year. And that means removing old paint, priming, painting again. The situation is simpler with oils for wood - they do not give a film on the surface of the wood, but are absorbed into the fibers. It is also necessary to renew the coating, but just clean it from dust and cover it with a new layer. And the processing frequency is less. Cons of oil for wood - higher price, fewer flowers.

How to enlarge a template

Simple carved platbands can be made without templates. A few examples will be in the video - it shows how to outline, how to cut. But not everyone will be able to draw more or less complex patterns on their own. You need skill and talent. The easiest way is to find a diagram, print it in the desired size, transfer it to cardboard and cut it out. This will create a pattern that you can trace.

The second way is to sketch from a photograph. Not all schemes can be found. Some, especially the old window frames, are nowhere to be found. If you have at least some drawing ability, you can sketch them.

Even such an ornament can be drawn ... if you have the skill

Questions may arise about how to increase the size of the found schema or template. There are three options:

  • Using any graphics editor. The simplest one - Paint - is in any computer running Windows (the "Image" tab, the "Resize image" line, select "centimeters" and put the desired length (height) in the box. The resulting file can be printed. If the printer is of a small format, it may be necessary to split into several pages, then glue them together and, according to the resulting picture, make a template.
  • Using a photocopy. Copier has a zoom function.
  • Taking graph paper, transfer the drawing to the desired scale. To do this, divide the original image into squares with a side of 0.5 or 1 cm (you can print it on a piece of paper in a cage). Then we transfer the lines to graph paper, increasing them in the desired proportion.

The first two are faster. But when scaling, the picture may turn out to be fuzzy and blurry. It can be corrected by hand, it can be drawn in some editor, for example, CorelDRAW. How to do this, see the video. Just an example of drawing a diagram for a thread.
