Carpet laying technology. How is carpet laying done with your own hands? Installation instructions for carpet

WITH Today you will learn how to lay a carpet - a "fluffy" covering, in fact - a carpet that completely covers the entire floor of the room, creating coziness and comfort. Carpet covering is practical and relatively inexpensive, and in addition, it increases the heat and sound insulation of the room. With all of the above, laying carpet with your own hands is not difficult, especially when you know how and what to do.

Carpet material is multilayer. From above there is a pile, which is fixed ("stuffed") in a special way on the primary base made of coarse fabric made of artificial or natural fibers. The bottom layer (or secondary backing) gives the carpet strength, it can be made from both fibrous (woven) and solid synthetic materials. The base layers are connected using a fixing layer, in other words, glue.

The material for the pile is wool, both pure and with the addition of synthetic fibers (such a coating is more durable). For inexpensive grades of carpet, artificial materials are widely used: polypropylene, polyamide and the like.

The quality of the carpet depends on the materials used, the thickness and density of the pile. Usually measured by the number of stitches per meter. The greater the number of stitches (and, accordingly, the villi) per meter, and also the thicker the threads that form them, the denser, stronger and, accordingly, heavier the carpet.

Types, manufacture and materials of carpet

I distinguish carpet according to the manufacturing method:

Needle Punched Carpet

The pile between the two layers is pierced by needles and pulled outward, remaining fixed inside.

Tufted (or needle-stitched) carpet

In this case, the machines sew through the primary base of the carpet, pulling threads through it, as a result, loops are obtained from the outside.

Modern carpet is made by tufting, when the primary warp is pierced and threads are inserted into these holes, then these threads can be tied at a knot, or glued to the glue. All this is done with special machines. The manual method of producing carpets like carpets is rarely used.

Tufted carpets are the most common today

On the primary base, penetrated with pile, a secondary base is glued, which gives the product strength and fixes the pile.

Where can you lay carpet

Features and disadvantages of carpet

Carpet is a carpet, with all the ensuing features and disadvantages, but also, accordingly, the advantages of carpets.

Having laid half of the carpet on a layer of glue, smooth it out and do the same with the second part. After the carpet is laid, roll it with a hard roller, moving from the center to the edges. Let the glue dry and install the skirting boards (you can find out by the link).

The advantage of the present laying method is that the carpet can be laid not in one piece, but in several strips, which is inevitable for large rooms.

And finally, the last method of styling.

Carpet laying with mechanical fixtures - grippers. Stretch carpet fixing

Let's take a look at how to install carpet in this case. At the beginning, as in the previous methods, we adjust the carpet to the size of the room, but then we roll it up and remove it. Along the perimeter of the room, with the help of glue or self-tapping screws, we install special strips - grippers, equipped with two rows of inclined studs, points directed upwards and towards the wall at which they are mounted. Before laying the carpet on the floor, put a backing (usually made of felt) to compensate for the thickness of the grippers. We cut it to size, close to the grippers.

We put the carpet on the studs along one wall, then we stretch it and fasten it to the gripper against the opposite wall. We repeat this operation along the perpendicular walls. With a special spatula, and in its absence - with a spatula, fill the excess roll carpet into the gap between the wall and the gripper bar.

Using the stretching method, laying the carpet with your own hands is somewhat difficult due to the use of a rather specific tool, which is not used in ordinary construction work - a device for stretching the carpet.

Joints of carpet and other coatings

Now a little about the structural solutions of the joints. If everything is clear with adjoining walls, columns, and other similar elements - skirting boards are used there (→ described in the article), then at the transition points from one room to another - where the carpet is combined with other coverings, at the joints of individual pieces - you have to come up with something other.

In these cases, strips of carpet, pre-fitted to each other ("cut", Fig. 3), are glued to the floor and (or) to each other. If coverage permits, fastening can be done with a stapler.

In addition to simply fixing two canvases next to the base (like wallpaper), they can be pre-connected using special strips (tapes). The strips are glued or thermally fused to the inside of the carpet. However, additional fixation to the base in the places of such connections is still needed.

We cut individual pieces of carpet as follows: we put their edges on top of each other, in the presence of a pattern, achieving its exact match. Then we press this place with a long metal ruler or a rule and with a sharp knife cut both panels at once, using the ruler as a guide.

If you decide to lay carpet on the floor, then you need to do it correctly, without being mistaken even in the smallest details. After all, otherwise it will wear out unevenly, move out and bristle. The ideal option would be carpet without seams. Currently on sale you can find rolls with a width of 2 to 6 meters, which will allow you to choose a width at which there will be no seams. For example, if the smaller side in the room is 5.5 m, then you need to purchase a 6-meter wide carpet. Yes, half a meter of carpet will go to waste, but it can always be used.

Do-it-yourself high-quality and correct carpet laying is the main factor that will have a significant impact on the service life and appearance of the carpet.

Before purchasing a carpet, you need to calculate the area of the room, taking into account the thresholds, and then add 1-2 m2 in reserve to the obtained value.

When laying carpet, certain conditions must be observed:

  • in order to protect the carpet from dirt, it is necessary to lay it only when all finishing work is completed;
  • it is imperative to lay the carpet only on a solid, clean, dry and even base;
  • the air humidity in the room where the carpet will be laid with your own hands should not exceed 74%, and the temperature should be above +16 degrees;
  • if laying is done in cold weather, then it is necessary to give time to the carpet for acclimatization, that is, keep it indoors for a day.

To properly lay the carpet, you need the following tools:

  • kicker - a tool that is designed to pull and then lay the carpet;
  • a backing that should be laid under the carpet to make the surface comfortable and soft;
  • grip rail, which is a wooden block. It should be fixed along the perimeter of the base with a slope;
  • scrapers, which are needed in order to remove mortar residues and old glue;
  • You will need a notched trowel to apply the adhesive. They can also remove old glue;
  • a metal ruler will be used as a guide for the knife;
  • carpet knives are needed to cut narrow strips. Knives can be different, but most often they have removable double-sided blades that can become dull over time, so it is advisable to periodically sharpen or change them.

Before starting installation work, some factors must be considered:

  1. The laying technology should be selected in accordance with the size of the room. If it is an office or a small room, then you can use stretching or loose styling. And if the room is large, then it is recommended to use glue for laying the carpet.
  2. Laying technology should be selected taking into account the intensity of the load. If the intensity in the room is medium to moderate, then you can opt for the method of laying without gluing or on pulling the carpet. But if the furniture will be rearranged in the room, then adhesive fixation would be the best option.

It is also imperative to consider the secondary carpet backing. If the base is thread or jute, then the carpet should be laid with glue. And with any other options, you can use any method of styling.

Basic laying technologies

Currently, there are several technologies for laying carpet:

  1. Laying without the use of glue or free laying is laying on double-sided tape or laying with fixation around the perimeter.
  2. Stretching is a technology that uses a substrate.
  3. Adhesive bonding technology, which is used most often in large rooms.

To begin with, the carpet must be laid on the floor and carefully adjusted to the size of the room, taking into account all niches, pipes and protrusions. The excess should be carefully trimmed with a sharp knife right in place.

The surface of the floor must be flat, free of shells and protrusions. If there are any irregularities, then the floor should be leveled with a leveling compound or putty. Also, it will not be superfluous to prime the floor with a special primer, which can increase adhesion.

Free styling

This method is most often used when laying carpet in small rooms.

Free laying can be done in two ways:

  • fastening the carpet around the perimeter;
  • fixation on double-sided tape.

Perimeter fixation

  1. The carpet must be laid in such a way that it extends onto the walls by about 6-10 cm.
  2. Next, you need to roll it with a special roller in all directions, and then cut off all unnecessary.
  3. After that, the carpet must be fixed around the entire perimeter with a plinth, and in the doorways with metal strips.

Benefits of free styling:

  • low financial costs;
  • you can lay the carpet yourself;
  • there is no need to make a thorough preparation of the base;
  • in the future, the carpet can be easily replaced.

Disadvantages of free styling:

  • low strength;
  • very low wear resistance;
  • there may be wrinkles and bubbles on the surface;
  • carpet can not be cleaned with a washing vacuum cleaner;
  • dragging heavy furniture is not recommended.

Fixation on double-sided tape

Most often, this method is used by those who like to periodically make changes to the decor of the room. It is great for installing carpet in an office or living space.

To install carpet with double-sided tape, follow these steps:

  1. First you need to glue the tape to the floor around the entire perimeter of the room.
  2. Then you need to make an adhesive tape mesh on the entire surface of the floor, with cells of 50x50 cm.
  3. Next, you need to lay the carpet in advance cut with a margin (6 cm on each side) so that its edges go over the walls.
  4. After laying the carpet, it is necessary to remove the protective film from the tape and glue the covering.
  5. At the end of gluing, you need to cut off all excess carpet with a knife.

Benefits of stacking with double-sided tape:

  • styling takes very little time and can be done independently;
  • no additional costs are required;
  • You can replace the carpet at any time.

Disadvantages of styling with double-sided tape:

  • it is necessary to make a thorough preparation of the basis;
  • wrinkles may appear on the surface;
  • high humidity can lead to deformation of the tape.

Carpet is a rather elastic material, therefore, when laying it, the stretching method can be used, which is as follows:

  1. First, you need to attach slats along the walls, having two rows of nails driven in at a 45-degree angle.
  2. Then you should use special tools to stretch the carpet and fix it on the slats.
  3. It is advisable to lay a backing under the carpet, which will help enhance the sound absorption effect and create a soft effect.

Please note that the gripper, the backing and the cover itself must match the catalog.

Stretching benefits:

  • no need to prepare the surface;
  • after laying, heavy furniture can be carried;
  • the service life of the carpet is increased.

Disadvantages of stretching:

  • to install, you will need the help of a professional;
  • additional costs for the purchase of a substrate.

Fixation with glue

This fixation method is one of the oldest and should only be used by those who do not intend to do frequent design changes in the future.

Glue installation is carried out as follows:

  1. First, you need to select a notched trowel suitable for the selected type of coating.
  2. Then the adhesive should be applied to the substrate using a notched trowel.
  3. After that, you can stretch the carpet over the glue.

Remember that the floor must be flat and dry, and if there is a possibility that the floor will chemically react with the adhesive, then this method should not be used.

Advantages of the adhesive method:

  • the carpet fits very securely;
  • no additional costs;
  • there is practically no possibility of bubbles;
  • can be used for cleaning with a washing vacuum cleaner.

Disadvantages of the glue method:

  • high-quality preparation of the floor is necessary;
  • carpet cannot be reused;
  • complex installation process that requires the presence of a professional.

Laying carpet on the stairs

It is no secret that the staircase must withstand increased loads, so the carpet on it must be very durable. In this case, it is the carpet that is best suited for these purposes.

The carpet is laid on the stairs as follows:

  1. First you need to carve out a carpet that will fit on the steps.
  2. Craftsmen recommend using paper templates for cutting out. To create a template, you need to put paper on top of the stairs and press it in the corners with a spatula. Next, you need to cut the template along the fold lines, put it on the carpet and carefully cut out all the elements of the covering.
  3. Laying should start from the lowest step.
  4. Then you should climb the stairs up, gradually connecting the patterns with each other. For connection, you can use both liquid glue and tension strips.

Tutorial video for laying carpet on backing and glue:

Do-it-yourself carpet laying is a very responsible process, but nothing is impossible. It should be remembered that if all the work is done correctly, then the carpet will serve you for many years, and if mistakes were made during installation, then only disappointment awaits you.

  • first, you need to measure the room as accurately as possible;
  • then you need to thoroughly clean the floor from all existing dirt;
  • it is always necessary to start laying the carpet from the corner;
  • when laying carpet in niches, try to leave a small margin for the future so that later the carpet can be adjusted to the baseboards;
  • it is better to cut off excess carpet using a board or a flat profile;
  • you need to start trimming the carpet from the center, since this will not cause irregularities on the material during trimming;
  • to accurately measure the area of the carpet under the battery, you need to cut off excess material on both sides with parallel straight lines;
  • all existing holes in the carpet, prepared in advance for pipes, are recommended to be fixed with transparent tape, as it can begin to peel off over time;
  • the carpet that will lie on the threshold must be accurately cut using a special cutter;
  • if the floor in the next room is covered with another coating, you will need to close the joint of two materials using a profile;
  • at the last stage of installation, it is necessary to push excess material under the skirting board with a screwdriver.

In modern landscaping of apartments, hotels, offices, carpet is often used, which is pleasant for walking on it barefoot or in shoes.

Carpeting will make your room cozy, add originality to it. You can install this coating yourself.

For this product to serve for a long time and with high quality, reliable carpet laying technology is important.

Carpet and its methods of laying out

Carpet - a soft floor covering on a rubber or jute base, with a pile in the form of full or cut loops. The surface of the product is soft, with high sound and heat insulation, the service life is quite long. This material is moisture resistant, within reason. After a few hours, the carpet dries up and the creases are smoothed out.

Carpet can be laid on absolutely any flat surface, such as parquet, linoleum, concrete.

Statistical charges that accumulate on the flooring must be removed by taking certain measures, using a grounded copper tape or mesh, using conductive glue, a primer.

Carpets are bought based on the size of the room, plus 30 cm of stock on each side, preferably in one piece.

The conductive primer is applied to the subfloor and must dry completely. Copper tape 1.5-2 meters long is glued with conductive adhesive every 40 m². On one side, part of the tape should be against the wall so that it can then be connected to the grounding point.

With the processed edges, the factory makes a joint to a joint. If they are not processed, then the product is overlapped.

In different rooms, rooms, offices, the methods of laying carpet are varied: free laying, stretching (tension method), adhesive fixation.

Floor laying rules

When laying carpet, you should adhere to the following rules:

  1. The premises where the work will be carried out should have a temperature maximum of 18 degrees, a minimum of 15 degrees.
  2. Before laying the material, it should be kept indoors for at least a day, especially in winter.
  3. The carpet product must not be laid on a cement screed, because cement dust penetrates through the rubberized base into the carpet itself.
  4. The base under the carpet must be made clean (no debris, dirt, paint), even, hard and dry.
  5. The material for the carpet product must be purchased from one batch.
  6. When lining a covering with a pattern, it is necessary to provide the necessary amount of material for an exact match of the pattern. It is necessary to lay carpet flooring strictly according to the structure of the pile.
  7. It is necessary to fix the artificially created carpet so that there is no shear, slip, in order to extend the service life.
  8. Laying work must be started from the center of the room, room.
  9. It is better to take the material for laying with a margin of 15-20 centimeters, since not all walls and corners are perfectly even.
  10. It is possible to install furniture, and then move on the coating after 24 hours.

In the bedroom, carpet can be laid with a long pile. In a nursery, such a carpet should be with fine pile so that small objects do not get stuck there and can be easily vacuumed.

Free styling

To apply glue to the floor, use a special spatula, then roll out the carpet and level it with a roller.

The most economical way is to lay the carpet loosely with fixation throughout the room. The artificially created carpet must be laid so that it goes 5-10 centimeters onto the wall. After that, the material is rolled with a special roller, leveling from the center to the edges, cutting off all unnecessary.

At the end of these works, the coating is fixed with plinths, the passages in the doors are fixed with metal slats.

According to this method, carpet is laid in small rooms, using one sheet of the product.

In addition to the advantages of this installation (small economic investments on the substrate, glue or tape), there are also disadvantages: the inability to clean with a washing vacuum cleaner, low resistance to material wear, denting and bubbling, the inability to drag heavy furniture over the product, as well as to move furniture on wheels.

Double sided tape

One of the quite often used is the following method of laying - laying out on double-sided tape. The adhesive tape method of laying implies a thorough tidying of the floor. This material is lined on flat, dust-free surfaces: linoleum, porcelain stoneware, marble, parquet, laminate, tile.

According to the type of carpet product, scotch tape 63-150 millimeters wide is selected.

When fixing the carpet around the perimeter, it is necessary to remove the skirting boards, lay the material, smooth the covering and cut off the stock.

Double-sided tape is first of all glued to the entire floor, it is made in strips of 5-8 cm mesh with 50x50 cm cells. The protective top film cannot be removed, 10 meters of tape is enough for 8 m² of carpet flooring. The carpet is cut with an excess of up to 5 centimeters in all directions, then laid out on the floor, the protective film is removed from the adhesive tape, and then the coating is glued. After finishing laying the carpet, cut off the excess material with a knife. If the plinth is nailed, then you should step back from the wall by 5 centimeters.

This method of laying carpet can be suitable for finishing the floor in offices, apartments, for those who like to change the decor of their apartment often.

This method with its own advantages: you can easily replace the flooring, simplicity and speed of installation, the substrate is not required. However, there are disadvantages: the need to carefully prepare the floor, the possibility of bubbling, wrinkling, deformation of the adhesive tape due to moisture, temperature changes.

Direct glue spread

This glue method can be used by those who rarely change their furnishings in the apartment, since the applied glue is not always completely removed.

The glue is applied with a special serrated dispenser, in which the appearance and height of the notches depend on the type of carpet.

This glue method of laying out the product is suitable only on concrete and wood surfaces and is practical for rooms with high traffic (educational institutions, restaurants, corridors).

With direct gluing, there are many positives: flame spread slows down, can be cleaned with a washing vacuum cleaner, the method is designed for a large area, you can install furniture on wheels, low probability of air bubbles, wrinkles. At the same time, this is a labor-intensive production, the carpet material cannot be reused. When replacing the carpet, it is necessary to prepare the floor again for the next work.

Laying carpet is a sure way to add a special charm to the interior decoration. What could be more pleasant than feeling the soft, warm and fluffy pile under your feet and at the same time admiring a beautiful and practical floor covering? Carpet successfully replaces the carpet, thanks to its excellent functional and quality characteristics, long service life, ease of maintenance. But the main advantage is the ability to lay the carpet on your own, using ordinary tools and consumables.

Choosing a carpet

Of course, before proceeding directly to the finishing work, you need to buy this very carpet. The classification of carpet is quite extensive, so choosing the right option is not so easy. When purchasing this final flooring element, you must be guided by the following principles:

  • material from which the carpet is made;
  • purpose;
  • method for dyeing threads;
  • manufacturing method;
  • the shape and height of the pile.

But that's not all. It turns out that it is better to choose the type of carpet based on the characteristics of the room for which it is intended. For example, a tufted covering with a short pile is suitable for a living room, a water-repellent needle-punched carpet for a hallway, a flocked carpet for a bath, and a high-pile material for a bedroom.

According to the composition of the carpet, there are three types: natural, artificial, mixed.
Natural is made from wool, cotton, jute and linen. The flooring is characterized by high rates of fire and moisture resistance and elastic structure, but wears out quickly.

Artificial carpet is made from polyester, acrylic, nylon, olefin, latex acts as a lining.

Mixed samples are produced from synthetic fibers with the addition of wool. This coating combines the properties of the two previous types and is great for the living room.

Depending on the type of pile, carpet can be of the following types:

In addition to the listed types, there are also velor, shag, felt, catlup, which are no less attractive and of high quality.

We make measurements

So, we have decided on the choice of the type of carpet, which means it's time to do the calculations. The footage is calculated as follows:

  • we measure the area of the room, create a sketch that marks the location of arches, doors, stairs, columns;
  • if the carpet is not a single sheet, but a roll, then we determine the length and number of stripes;
  • add 5 cm to the length of the first strip, add the length of the repeating pattern from the second strip.

It is necessary to take into account not only the geometric shape of the room, but also the absence or presence of niches under the windowsills, the width of the carpet.

First things to consider

In order for the carpet flooring work to go perfectly, several points should be taken into account:
1. Special preparation of the base is not required: the carpet can be laid safely on any surface. The only thing to worry about is the cleanliness of the floor.
2. It is recommended to roll out the floor covering a day before starting work so that it “gets used” to the room temperature.
3. The air temperature must be at least 15 degrees, the glue and the carpet itself must be at least 17.

What is the backing for?

Novice craftsmen very often forget about the substrate, which is not entirely correct. After all, this small nuance is of no small importance. The underlay creates a feeling of warmth, smoothes out minor imperfections in the floor, and increases the service life of the carpet several times.
As for the substrate material, it can be different. Most often it is corrugated and flat rubber, natural or synthetic felt, polyurethane foam.

It is important!
The main quality that a substrate should have is elasticity!

What tools do we need?

If you decide to lay the carpet yourself, nothing is easier, especially if you have all the necessary tools.

Prepare in advance:

  • device for thermal gluing (ironing). Art. N 617000;
  • construction knives for cutting the coating. Art. N 967680,966680;
  • heat sealing tape;
  • rail with nails (gripper);
  • lever device for tensioning - turn-stretcher. Art. N 623900;
  • ruler, notched trowel, hammer, screwdriver, screws, tape measure and awl;
  • knee stretcher kicker. Art. N 641000.

Carpet laying technology

There are several ways to install carpet:

Direct gluing (glue method)

Direct bonding is a method where the floor covering is glued over the entire area. The method is excellent for laying small pieces of carpet and eliminates the appearance of wrinkles and bubbles.

It is important!
The glue method is often used in areas with high traffic.

1. Clean the work surface from foreign objects.
2. Using a notched trowel, apply adhesive to the floor and backing, and stick.
3. Work another part of the floor and glue the second strip of underlay, butt-to-joint with the first.
4. Let the glue dry (the time required for this is indicated in the instructions).
5. Spread the carpet on the floor with a 10 cm approach to the walls. You can then cut off the excess.

6. Spread the mat by pressing it to the floor while stretching it slightly.
7. Do the same with the rest of the blade.
8. Make a final cut of the carpet and install the skirting boards by pulling the carpet underneath with a knee stretcher kicker.

It is important!
If the carpet is dense, then it is not necessary to use a backing.

  • guarantee of durable, reliable styling;
  • the ability to use in large areas;
  • gluing several pieces of carpet is allowed;
  • the occurrence of bubbles and wrinkles is minimized;
  • can be cleaned with a "washing vacuum cleaner";
  • has the ability to slow the spread of flame.
  • laboriousness of installation, it is advisable to do this under the supervision of professionals;
  • the carpet cannot be used twice.

Free styling with perimeter fixation

This method is considered to be the simplest and most economical. Ideal for small spaces where it is advisable to use a single piece of cover.
1. Clean the floor surface.
2. Roll the underlay on the floor and fix it with a stapler at 20 cm intervals.
3. Glue the underlay knocks with tape.
4. Roll out the carpet over the walls (10 cm).
5. With a factory cut, attach the cover to the wall and secure it with a plinth.
6. Pull the canvas towards the opposite walls.
7. Cut off the excess carpet, fix the covering with a plinth, tightening it with a kicker.
8. Near the doors, press the carpet with a metal strip.

It is important!
Please note that this method provokes the appearance of bubbles and wrinkles, significantly reduces wear resistance and service life.

  • the method does not require floor preparation and can be carried out without assistance;
  • does not require the purchase of scotch tape, grippers.
  • low stacking strength;
  • can not be used for cleaning with a "washing vacuum cleaner";
  • it is not recommended to put heavy furniture equipped with casters on the carpet laid in this way.

Free styling with tape fixation

This method is used in 70% of cases, even though it requires preliminary preparation of the floor. The tape comes in a variety of widths, from 63 mm (2.5 inches) to 150 mm (6 inches). The adhesive tape is selected depending on the type of carpet.

The adhesive tape is glued (first along the perimeter, then in the form of a "grid" at intervals of 50x50 cm or strips of 8 cm) without removing the protective film. The carpet, cut with a margin (5 cm on each side), is laid in such a way that its edges go over the walls with a "trough". Then the upper protective film is removed and the canvas is glued.
Excess carpet is cut with a construction knife. If you plan to install skirting boards, then you need to retreat from the wall at least 5 cm, or even more.

It is important!
Several pieces of cloth can be glued onto the tape. Scotch tape consumption is 10 m (one roll) per 8 m2.

Fixing with adhesive tape is convenient on smooth, dust-free surfaces - linoleum, tiles, laminate, porcelain stoneware, high-quality parquet. Scotch flooring is often used in office buildings. In addition, this is a great option for those who like to change decor frequently.

  • simplicity of the way. Such laying of carpet with your own hands takes a minimum of time;
  • there is no need for additional costs for the substrate;
  • can be used if there is a "warm floor" system;
  • the ability to quickly replace the carpet without the need to prepare the floor.
  • irregularities and bubbles may appear;
  • scotch tape is sometimes deformed due to temperature changes.

Stretching (tension)

This glueless method was proposed by English designers, noticing the elasticity of the carpet and deciding to use this property for their own purposes. Laying is done using grippers - rails with nails driven in two rows at an angle of 45 degrees, and stretchers - tools for tensioning the canvas.

It is important!
A power stretcher is necessary in rooms with a large area, and a knee stretcher is necessary in a small area.

The slats are attached along the perimeter, the carpet is fixed on them.
1. Prepare the surface.
2. Fasten the grippers around the perimeter of the room with nails towards the walls.
3. Lay the backing sheet by attaching it in 20 cm increments with a stapler.
4. Spread the carpet, aligning the factory cut with the wall.
5.Using a knee stretcher (kicker), secure the edge of the cover to the gripper. Set the kicker teeth a couple of centimeters from the staff and hit the pad with your knee. Attach the carpet to the nails.
6. Then the stretching takes place by means of a turn-stretcher, starting from the corners. The base should rest against the wall where the carpet is already well anchored.
7. Insert the stretcher teeth at a distance of 15 cm from the opposite wall into the carpet, fix. Pull the ends over the grippers with a kicker. This should be done in all directions.
8. Fold in excess edges, trim them.

After the installation is completed, you need to let the glue or tape dry. You should not enter the room during the day and even more so arrange furniture in it. If you cannot do without additional work, you need to do them very carefully.

Carpet laying - video instruction

Competent carpet laying, the price, which will depend on the chosen technology, will undoubtedly transform your home and make it much warmer, more beautiful and more comfortable. All that remains is to maintain perfect condition and rejoice in the fact that you not only chose such a magnificent flooring, but also laid it yourself.

Carpet is a fairly popular material that is used for finishing the floor. It is pleasant, warm and, undoubtedly, able to create coziness in the house, and also easy to clean. Therefore, many owners of apartments and houses appreciate it. Carpet laying is also simple, but still there are a number of nuances that must be taken into account during the installation of the coating. How to lay carpet? Let's figure it out together.

Carpet - a cozy solution for your home

Carpet in its structure resembles ordinary carpets, but in general it has nothing to do with them. This versatile, durable, easy-to-clean flooring covers subfloors completely, while a regular carpet only covers a section of the floor, and underneath is a regular topcoat.

Do not think that the carpet is boring and monotonous - this is far from the case. Now all kinds of coatings are produced - with long and short nap, soft and quite dense.

On a note! The carpet can be installed in any room where it will not be in excessive contact with water. He is not afraid of temperature changes, and therefore can lie even in unheated rooms.

Carpet - operation and maintenance

Laying can be done on any type of substrate - the material feels great on a concrete or wooden floor, on plywood or gypsum fiber flooring, etc. and is often used for interior decoration.

  1. The material is distinguished by increased indicators of thermal insulation, it retains heat well in the house.
  2. Carpet has sound insulation properties. And the larger the pile, the quieter the steps while moving on this type of surface.
  3. The coating is distinguished by high indicators of fire safety, since it is processed with special compounds during production.
  4. Carpet absorbs dust, does not allow it to float in the air. The smallest particles are deposited in its pile.
  5. The material is easy to clean - sometimes you just need to use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt.
  6. Carpet has a wide variety of textures and colors.
  7. Installation of the material is very simple and within the power of anyone who is even a little "friends" with the instruments.
  8. The carpet provides warmth and comfort in the house.

Features and nuances of the material

The carpet is very durable, but in many respects its service life will depend on the correct laying and careful maintenance of it. And the main disadvantage of carpet is that bright chemical dyes are used in the manufacture, which in certain situations can cause allergies among the residents of the house. Therefore, the material is not recommended for use in an apartment where people who are sensitive to the state of the environment live. However, do not forget that the carpet itself is a good dust accumulator, and the allergy that appears may be caused not by dyes, but by these smallest particles of litter. With regular cleaning of the coating, there should be no allergies.

They say that carpet is capable of releasing substances that negatively affect the human body into the air. And here it is worth thinking, first of all, about what the material is made of. If it is made of pure wool, then you should not be afraid of inhaling toxic substances. And if the material is synthetic, then it is worth remembering that the same linoleum or laminate has in its composition much more poisonous adhesives and substances than the same carpet.

Conditions for choosing carpet

The key to successfully completing the repair and beauty in the house, as well as achieving the desired result, is the correct choice of finishing materials. And this rule also applies to carpet. It should be selected taking into account all the features of the operation of the material. For example, you should not choose a long-pile flooring for an apartment where pets live. It will be difficult to clean it from wool.

Also, when choosing a material, the permeability of the room is also taken into account. For example, long-nap material is also not placed in the corridor or kitchen. It is better to place it in the living room or bedroom.

On a note! Now the carpet is produced with a variety of pile - with loop, split. And the loop, in turn, is subdivided into two more types - one- and two-level. The pile length can vary from 5 to 40 mm.

Also, the material differs depending on the materials used to create. Basically, it is made from synthetics.

Table. What is the carpet made of?

Materiala brief description of

The most durable type of carpet. Service life can be up to 15 years with proper operation. The material is very easy to clean.

Carpet made of acrylic fiber resembles wool in its structure, but does not differ in high elasticity. The pile is quite tough.

The only natural material that can be used to make carpet. It is soft, elastic, environmentally friendly and non-electrifying. Color saturation and structure persist for a long time, but such carpet is more expensive than other types.

Another important aspect when buying carpet is the purchase of sufficient material. That is, before going to the store, it is worth calculating the area of the room and purchasing the coating in accordance with the measurements taken.

Attention! Carpets are always bought with a margin necessary to fit the material during installation. The stock is equal to 10% of the total required coverage area.

Carpet installation methods

The service life of the material largely depends on the correct laying. There are the following ways to lay the carpet:

  • with glue;
  • double-sided tape;
  • free installation with fixing along the perimeter;
  • stretching.

Using double-sided tape the carpet can be quickly fixed to the rough base at no extra cost. The method makes it possible, if necessary, to rather simply dismantle the coating. In this case, the carpet is attached to strips of double-sided tape, glued to the subfloor with a grid with a pitch of about 50-100 cm. The protective tape does not come off. The carpet is laid rolled up in a roll at the far end of the room, fixed on tape there, and then, rolling, is glued over the entire floor area. But it is better to glue the material from the middle of the room.

Securing the carpet with glue- ideal for concrete or wood substrates. In this case, you will need to use special adhesives that will be applied with a notched trowel to the rough base. The carpet is rolled out on the floor, then one side of it is thrown over the other (approximately in the middle of the cloth). The freed space of the floor is coated with glue, on which the material is mounted, gradually unfolding. The second side is glued in the same way.

On a note! In the case of using glue to fix the carpet, it is important to correctly join the individual canvases. To do this, they overlap each other by 5-7 cm to get a perfect joint. Further, the edges are well coated with glue and rolled with a roller. Only in this case, the junction of the individual canvases will be invisible.

Method "Stretching" will require the purchase of special equipment - the so-called stretcher. No adhesives or materials are used here. We will have to purchase gripper rails, which will be installed around the perimeter of the room, and the carpet will be attached to them. In this case, the material is simply stretched and secured.

Sometimes the carpet is laid without fixing at all, or rather, it will only hold due to the baseboards. But this option will be minimally reliable, it is not recommended to move furniture along the floor - the carpet will simply gather in folds. In rooms where there is a high traffic rate, this method is never used. Also, do not neglect the fixation of the carpet in spacious rooms. But if necessary, the coating is easy to dismantle - just unscrew the plinth.

Attention! Whichever method of carpet laying is chosen, you should in any case carefully spread the material on the floor surface. To do this, you can use a roller.

What to use as a backing?

It is recommended to lay a substrate under the carpet, as well as under the laminate. It will help to extend the service life of the material, improve heat and sound insulation performance, and has shock-absorbing properties. Almost any material can be used as a carpet backing. It can be synthetic felt, polyurethane foam, rubber backing. The main thing is that the material is elastic, and this is quite simple to check - you need to crush a piece of the substrate in your hands and see if it returns to its original state.

Important! The underlay must be installed without fail if the carpet is mounted on a concrete base. In the case of wooden floors, it can be neglected.

Preparation for styling

To lay the carpet according to all the rules, the rough base must be prepared. It must be clean and dry. But simply cleaning the floor is not enough. It is necessary to make sure that the base is even, and if necessary, carry out a series of work to correct the situation (if the floor is a curve). The concrete floor can be leveled with a self-leveling mixture, and the wooden floor can be covered with plywood, chipboard or other dense and durable materials.

If the coating will be laid on a wooden floor, it is important to inspect the surface of the base for protruding nail heads. If there are any, then they are nailed into the boards as much as possible - they should not stick out.

Before laying the carpet, the skirting boards are also removed, if we are not talking about a new house in which no repair work has been carried out. Nowadays, plastic skirting boards are widely used, which are easy to remove - just remove the protective strip and unscrew the screws that press the product against the wall. Wooden ones nailed down will have to be dismantled by force. If necessary, they can be removed as carefully as possible and then used again after laying the carpet. But this is not always possible to do.

Also, the floors, if they are wooden, are recommended to be treated with antiseptic compounds in order to reduce the risk of developing fungus, mold, and the appearance of colonies of microorganisms. Any rough surface should be treated with water-repellent agents.

On a note! It is important to maintain the correct room temperature when laying carpet. It should be more than +15 degrees. At the same time, the air humidity is at least 75%.

It is recommended to prime the surface of the subfloor when it comes to adhesive methods for laying carpet, that is, it is planned to use glue or double-sided tape. Then the material will hold much more reliably than in the absence of a primer layer on the base.

How to lay carpet with your own hands

Let's take a closer look at how the carpet is laid on glue or double-sided tape.

Step 1. Before starting work, it is recommended to purchase all the necessary tools and materials. This is the carpet itself in the required quantity, double-sided tape, glue, scissors, a breadboard knife, a ruler and tape measure, a tool for trimming the edge of the carpet, a knife on plaster, a notched trowel and a roller.

Step 2. It is not difficult to calculate the required amount of carpet - it is enough to know the area of the room (so much material is required). It is important to consider that the supply of carpet should be quite extensive. The material is purchased taking into account the fact that on each side, 40 cm should be added to the final area of the carpet.

Step 3. The surface of the subfloor is cleaned of the old coating. Skirting boards are removed. The floor is cleared of debris and dirt.

Step 4. Make sure the floor is level. For this, a building level or a long strip about 2 m long is used - the gaps between it and the floor should not be more than 2 mm.

Step 5. If necessary, the floor is sanded. In the process, small irregularities are removed. If the irregularities are large, the base should be leveled.

Important! The sub floor must be dry, without grease stains. If there are any, then they are removed before laying the carpet.

Step 6. One day before installation, the carpet is rolled out onto the prepared base. It should lie down a little and even out. You need to work with the roll carefully so as not to "break" it. Kink marks will be visible on the pavement that has already been laid.

Step 7. When laying carpet, certain rules are observed: the joints between individual canvases should be located perpendicular to the window. The direction of the pile should be towards the window.

Step 8. The process of fixing the carpet begins. The material is already on the floor, but it is important to ensure that it overlaps the walls around the perimeter.

Step 9. The cover is rolled out from the center to the edges.

Step 10. The material is cut with a leveler or a breadboard knife. The carpet is cut along the line of the junction of the walls and the floor of the room. The corners are cut on a piece of wood laid on the floor, on which the folded edge of the carpet is placed. If the coating will consist of several strips, then they are stacked with an overlap of 10 cm on top of each other.

Step 11. At the junction of the two canvases, an incision is made about 5 cm from the edge of one of the carpet segments. Two layers of material are cut at once. For convenience, it is recommended to cut along a long metal strip laid on the carpet. Thus, it will turn out to form a beautiful and neat joint of two pieces of carpet.

Attention! When gluing the material, it is important to pay special attention to the cut locations. They must be glued very carefully.

Step 12. Depending on the size of the room, the method of fixation is also chosen. For example, if the area of the room is no more than 12 m 2, then it is enough to stick double-sided tape around the perimeter - it will hold the carpet. If the dimensions of the room are larger and the area varies from 12 to 20 m 2, then the tape is glued through each meter and along the perimeter of the walls. In rooms larger than 20 m 2, glue is used. Thanks to it, styling will be easier and cleaner.

Step 13. Laying with adhesive tape is done as follows: the spread carpet is folded in half. Along the perimeter of the room in the place where part of the carpet lay, and on each meter of the room, pieces of double-sided tape are glued. The protective tape has not yet been removed from it.

Step 14. The adhesive tape is removed from the scotch tape, and the carpet is neatly laid out on the floor surface on the scotch tape. The coating is glued from the center to the edges of the room.

Step 15. Laying with glue is done as follows: the carpet is also folded in half, and the floor surface under it is smeared with glue using a notched trowel. Before laying the carpet, the glue is allowed to stand for about 10 minutes.

Step 16. The carpet is laid out on the surface treated with glue and smoothed out from the center to the edges.

Step 17. So that the edge of the material does not bloom, as well as for joining the carpet with other types of flooring, sills are used. In this case, the nut is fastened so that the self-tapping screws do not pass through the carpet - it will simply be pressed by the bar.

Step 18. Plinths are installed around the perimeter of the room. They will additionally fix the material.
