To restore the old round table. We are restoring an old round table with our own hands

Made of natural wood - it lends itself well to restoration. It is quite easy to assess her condition. First of all, you need to inspect the product for rot and rotten elements. This is a common occurrence for furniture that has been stored in improper conditions. Moisture quickly destroys wood, making it unrecoverable.

Pay attention also to the frame of the product. If the parts are intact and made from natural wood, great news for you. Old plywood, sheet materials covered with peeled veneer can be removed. But the frame will become a reliable support for the entire restoration process.

In addition, remember that paintwork is of great importance if you are evaluating a product as a subject for further restoration. Furniture varnish is difficult to remove, and even then, mainly on flat areas with a flat surface. The processing of small figured elements requires special equipment and a large number of consumables. It is better not to mess with such furniture if you have no experience.

Finally, paint is not a sentence for a restorer. On the contrary, be prepared to run into several coats of old paint. There are several ways to get rid of it. The building hair dryer and solvents are the most gentle of them. Then the product is sanded and after that it is ready for restoration.

Let's see what is needed in order to restore the old writing desk from this master class:

Materials:

Wooden curly legs - 4 pcs;
- a small pine board to strengthen the frame;
- table top according to the dimensions of the frame;
- thin wooden boards no more than 15 mm thick for decorating the side panel of the table;
- primer for wood;
- light-colored long-lasting paint;
- paint with a loose coating for the decorative side panel - 2-3 shades;
- glue for woodwork;
- self-tapping screws and furniture screws;
- fittings for fixing the back of the table to the wall;
- plastic handles for drawers;
- wood putty.

Tools:

Grinder;
- sandpaper;
- paint brushes and roller;
- screwdriver;
- screwdriver;
- electric drill;
- construction tape;
- hacksaw for metal;
- putty knife.

Step one: preparing the table for restoration work

The author got the table for restoration free of charge. By the way, there are four tables. However, his countertop turned out to be completely unusable, so he borrowed another one from a neighbor - with a countertop suitable for the project. All this pleasure cost him $ 35. And part of the money went to the purchase of curly legs and paints and varnishes. It turned out quite economically.

The author cleared the dust off the table and set about refurbishing it. To do this, he took out all the drawers. There are usually levers on the side that must be pressed on both sides. Then the box can be easily removed from the compartment.

He also removed the sidebar of the table. It was attached to furniture screws and it turned out to be too difficult to unscrew them. Therefore, the author used a hacksaw for metal and cut the screws along the line between the panel and the frame.

To keep the countertop frame rigid, he reinforced it with a small wooden board, screwed down and glued to it. Always use glue when assembling furniture whenever possible. This significantly extends the life of the fasteners.

The author has removed the bottom panel of the table under the drawers. In order to prevent the plywood from cracking, he first glued the tape along the cutting line. The manual circular did an excellent job of this. For the same purpose, you can use a jigsaw.

Step two: re-equipping the table

Since the table had lost its support and side panel, they had to be replaced with something. But the decision was ready in advance. The author purchased four curly legs in a supermarket. He sawed three of them on the lathe. They will be located under the part of the table where the drawers are located. One leg will partially replace the removed side panel.

The second fixed the short legs under the panel with drawers with screws from the back side. Glue was also needed here. Remember that excess glue should be promptly removed, otherwise it will affect the color quality of the product. This is done with fine-grained sandpaper.

Step three: painting the old table

Before painting, the surface of the product should be thoroughly sanded. Small elements and hard-to-reach places are usually sanded with sandpaper or disassembled.

Then he applied two coats of white paint. The author used acrylic paint. It is not particularly durable, but it has its advantages. For example, acrylic paint is non-toxic and odorless. Therefore, all work can be carried out in a residential area.

Acrylic paint often needs varnishing. Alkyd, oil and nitro paint are more resistant, but even when using the latter, furniture should be varnished. This will extend the life of the paintwork.

Step four: setting up the table

You may have noticed that the table is missing legs. That's right, you're right. The author used only four supports instead of six. This is because the table is designed to be used in one specific place - in the corner where the old desk was located earlier.

And since the table was not planned to be rearranged from place to place, the author decided to save a little and fix the frame permanently to the wall. He started this work before installing the countertop.

Step five: install the countertop and make final preparations

The author also replaced the plywood side panel of the drawer panel. Instead, he used several tinted boards that fit perfectly into the overall picture and turned into a highlight of the product. Such toning is carried out using materials that have a loose coating. Their choice among acrylic paints is huge. A similar effect can be achieved with some decorative oils.

Finally, the author fixed black matte plastic handles on all the drawers and varnished the table top with a glossy varnish. When choosing a varnish for a worktop, pay attention to the degree of resistance of the coating. If you have the opportunity to compare samples of materials, then a good furniture varnish should form a hard, non-scratched coating with a fingernail after drying. This way you can be sure that the worktop will have an excellent fresh look for a long time.

Restoration methods

There are many ways to improve, decorate, and refurbish an old table. But before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the future "canvas" - remove the old coating, sand it, screw in all the nuts and screws (so as not to stagger or dangle), putty, stain (if necessary) or varnish. Then start decorating. Conventionally, all methods of decorating a wooden table can be divided into two groups:

    Surface painting, including self-painting, painting through a stencil or using stamps;

    Surface gluing special materials - wallpaper, self-adhesive film, decoupage with napkins or interesting clippings, overlaying, photo printing, the use of mosaics or tiles.

The glass table will have to be updated a little differently. It is quite possible to glue it with wallpaper, film or make decoupage from the inside.

You can also paint the glass surface with special paints and get an interesting design.

How to upgrade a glass table?

A beautiful glass coffee table is quite common in modern apartments. As a result of improper care, the glass tabletop loses its attractive appearance.

The legs are loose, chips and scratches appear on the glass. If there are scratches on the tabletop, in which a nail can fit, then it is better to give the table to a special workshop, dispose of or replace the glass with a new one.

If the damage is not so terrible, then you can try to reanimate this piece of furniture.

You can save a glass countertop from scratches at home both with improvised (toothpaste, soda, transparent nail polish) and with special means (GOI paste, car polishes, precious metals polishing agents).

First you need to clean the surface, then gently rub in or apply the composition to the scratch. Do not overdo it, otherwise you may get several more instead of one scratch. Wait a little for the compound to set and clean the glass again.

To get rid of scratches, use the most common non-gel toothpaste. Soda is dissolved with water to a state of gruel, approximately in a ratio of 1: 1. GOI paste must be used proven, real. Transparent varnish will not completely eliminate the problem, but only partially. At a certain angle of illumination, it will be noticeable that there were scratches in that place.

Loose table legs are also subject to repair. Usually, the table legs are attached with special glue. This glue can dry out over time. It can be removed and replaced with new adhesive. If the legs are attached to screws, self-tapping screws, then they can be unscrewed and replaced with new ones.

Now the table can be given a completely new sound using various decorating techniques:

    Paste over the table from the seamy side with decorative foil. Do not bubble when wrapping the table. It is better to glue the film a little, gradually pushing back the substrate. If bubbles do appear, then you can pierce them with a needle and smooth them out;

    Make decoupage. To do this, you need pictures (for example, from napkins or on rice paper, or images specially prepared for this), PVC glue or special for these works, brushes, a file, varnish for decoupage. The necessary equipment can be purchased in shops for creativity and scrapbooking;

    Paint with stained glass paints. Acrylic contour, stained glass paints, cotton swabs and napkins, alcohol for degreasing the surface, a sketch of a drawing, scotch tape - this is a set of items that will be needed for this work;

    Fix the lighting, LED strip around the table perimeter;

    If the design allows you to make a mini-garden, an aquarium or a bright composition of stones, shells. When the table has a small box, which is covered with a table top on top, then you can put a pallet on its bottom and plant succulents (plants that do not need frequent watering) there. Or decorate the box with shells, stones, or other items.

How to restore a wooden table?

A wooden table can be made from MDF or chipboard, or from solid wood. In any case, the restoration of the old table at home will take place in several stages. Let's take a look at all these steps.

    Preparatory- check all fasteners, disassemble the table and re-fasten, clean the surface.

    Removing the old coating. Sometimes for this you may only need a special composition that removes varnish and paint. But most often you also have to use coarse-grained and fine-grained sandpaper, a sander. It is necessary to sand along the grain to avoid the formation of new scratches.

    Sealing cracks and chips. To do this, you need a putty for wood or a polyester analog. After filling, re-sanding. At this stage, you can stop and not carry out further work (except varnishing), cover the wood with wood stain, which will give the table a new color and look. For example, turn an oak table into an imitation of wenge or another type of wood. But when the damage is significant, the next step is necessary.

    Primer and subsequent puttying. Without a primer, the varnish will lie poorly and unevenly. An alkyd or shellac primer is suitable for wood.

    Giving the final design. At this stage, painting, pasting of the table is carried out. If the table is painted, the paint should be applied in at least 2 coats.

    Final coating with varnish or wax. Varnish and wax should be covered in several layers.

This refurbished polished table will last for years to come.

Written or magazine, children's or toilet - regardless of its purpose, it will become an interior decoration, because you spent so much time on it and put your soul into it.

How to recolor?

Table staining is the most popular restoration method. What could be more laconic than a white table? Only black. Therefore, the choice of paint (acrylic or oil, enamel) is very important. How long the restored table will serve depends on what paint the repair was made, or rather on its characteristics.

To choose a paint, you need to understand where and how the table will be used, what materials it is made of.

    Water-based acrylic paint suitable for heated rooms, withstands moisture well. Dries quickly. Can be washed off with water during application. But after drying, it does not lend itself to water. Alkyd compounds are considered more reliable.

    Oil paints are losing their popularity due to an unreasonably high expense.

    Wood enamels attract with their glossy surface and high performance. In addition, nitro-enamel paints set quickly.

The paint was selected and purchased; further repair of the table presupposes its coloring.

The surfaces must be pretreated, cleaned, removed the old coating, removed scratches and chips, putty, primed, protect decorative inserts, for example, made of glass, with tape. And only after the primer has dried can you paint.

To give an even color, the paint is applied in several layers. The first layer is actually rubbed into the surface.

Two or three layers are enough for a rich color to show through.

To apply an additional pattern to the countertop, you can use pre-prepared stencils or the most common tulle. When the base color has dried, the tulle (or stencil) is fixed and the pattern paint is applied. You can do this with a brush, but it is better to use a sponge or spray paint. The finished product is varnished to make it more aesthetically pleasing and to strengthen the surface.

To give a graphic pattern (lines, zigzags, rhombuses, squares), you can use scotch tape. Mark the future drawing with adhesive tape, apply the first color with paint. If necessary, repeat the procedure with other colors. Varnish the finished worktop.

If it is necessary to achieve the effect of aged wood, then first a special composition is applied to the treated surface (cleaned, sanded and primed).

Patination can be done with a dark stain. Then the first coat of paint is applied to the wood. Then a second layer of lighter and more liquid paint is applied. When the paint is dry, we go over the surface of the sandpaper. The desired effect has been achieved.

The table is ready for finishing with varnish.

We update the plastic table

Many are afraid to start decorating a plastic table because of its material. In fact, a plastic surface is a more rewarding material for restoration. It does not require preliminary and lengthy processing.

The maximum is getting rid of scratches and chips. Well, if the surface is flat, then it is enough to only sand it a little to roughen it, paint or soil could adhere better, or degrease it for further work - gluing film, wallpaper, tiles, mosaics, eggshells or decoupage.

To decoupage a plastic table, you will first need to process the table top. Sand it, put acrylic primer. Then think about how you will arrange the pictures. Make small sketches of their future location. Usually napkins or drawings on rice paper are used for decoupage, but for these purposes you can use any clippings and even pictures printed on a printer.

At the end of the work, the tabletop is varnished.

For a spectacular decoupage, you can use fabric. For decorative purposes, cotton material with a bright pattern is suitable. The decoupage procedure is the same, only PVC glue is applied immediately to the entire fabric.

Decor options

The restoration and subsequent decoration of the table is a very time-consuming process. But the result is worth it, because you can get an exclusive designer item with which memories are already associated. Furniture decor can be completely original and at the same time very organically fit into the concept of using the object and the room.

A laconic design is suitable for a book-table or folding table. It can be dyed one or two colors. And you can give nobility and accentuate the natural structure of the tree.

The sliding table can be decorated with drawings that may appear only when the tabletop is disassembled as much as possible. And of course, if this kind of table is used as a dining table, you can use the kitchen theme in its decor - images of food, fruits and vegetables, cutlery. The kitchen table can be decorated with tiles and mosaics. This will be a very practical solution.

Sooner or later the moment comes when the wooden table loses its former attractiveness. Sending it to gather dust in the attic or throwing it away altogether is not the right way out. The best way out of this situation is to restore the old table.

Furniture restoration is a fun process that allows you to significantly save on the purchase of new furniture

This is especially true when the product is made of expensive wood species. In such circumstances, it will be much more profitable to carry out the restoration of the table than to buy a new expensive table or replace the old table with a product of a lower quality. In addition, antique models are appreciated more and more over time, and it is likely that in a few years a refurbished table will greatly increase in value.

The wooden table after staining has taken on a completely different look

There are several ways to repair a wooden table. The most popular is the method based on painting the table surface with paint and then applying varnish.

To give the table a more spectacular look, it can be painted not as a whole, but only in individual parts

The second most common is the pasting of furniture with self-adhesive film. This method turns out to be the cheapest, but at the same time it allows you to hide existing defects in furniture and transform the appearance of the product for the better.

The simplest and most beautiful option for decorating an old table that does not require fiddling with paints is gluing a film

An original technique in furniture restoration is tiling on the table surface. This method will allow the product to maintain its beautiful appearance for a long time, since it will not be afraid of moisture and high temperature.

Table decoration with ceramic tiles in separate fragments

Work on the restoration of the table should be started with a thorough examination of the product for defects. The best option would be to disassemble the furniture into parts, clean it from dirt, and then reassemble it.

We carefully inspect all fasteners in the structure and defects of the countertop and repair parts

If breakdowns were found, then they should be eliminated. If it is impossible to repair one of the parts, it should be replaced with a new one, prepared independently or made to order.

We remove the old coating with a grinder or manually

After grinding, we thoroughly clean the table from dust and seal up cracks and chips

If the tabletop does not have severe damage, then you can not hide the natural beauty of the wood and cover it with a stain and then varnish.

It is very important to polish the wood along the grain, otherwise hard-to-remove defects may occur. At the end of the treatment, it is necessary to clean the surface with sandpaper, and then remove all dust from the furniture. After that, you need to degrease the surface of the table using special solvents, alcohol or acetone. If any parts of the product have chips, cracks or scratches, then it is necessary to putty them, and to connect the breaks with glue.

The table can be primed in 1-2 layers using a small sponge roller, while each layer should dry completely

When the primer is dry, sand the countertop again with a medium grit sandpaper or sanding sponge.

Then the stage of grinding and degreasing the furniture surface should be carried out again. If the table is made of natural wood, then it is advisable to protect it from pests and diseases. For this, the product is impregnated with a suitable agent.

If the table is made of natural wood, it is better to treat it with a special impregnation, which will protect it from pests and diseases.

Varnishing

A polished dining table can be restored by sanding the surface and applying a new layer of decorative lacquer to it.

The next step is varnishing the wood parts. If you need to mask some defects or just want to change the color of the old table, then before applying varnish, you can use paint. Changing the shade of furniture can also be achieved using not transparent, but colored varnish. After all the parts have dried well, you need to assemble the product.

The paint should be applied in 2 thin layers, and then protect the table surface with varnish

The process of restoring an old table with your own hands.
And so, an old table was taken as a basis, which lived a very long life, inherited by the author from his grandmother. At first glance, it looks very inconspicuous and even depressed, in places the plywood is peeling, there are many scratches and chips, the varnish has burnt out from the sun and time. But the general appearance is still stately, for this reason the master decided to revive him.

To begin with, all the boxes were removed and a visual assessment of all the more problem areas requiring urgent restoration was carried out. The bottom of almost all the boxes is peeling; the plywood should be replaced with a new one.

He removes the old plywood and screws on the new one, making the bottom according to the old dimensions.

Also, all the old fittings are removed from the table, because the author will subsequently install a new one, suitable for the new style. The old one should be left, "it will come in handy on the farm."

Then the table is taken out into the open air, because the work will be quite dusty, as well as contact with paints and varnishes, or painting should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. Oilcloth was spread under the table so as not to litter in the yard.

Next, it is necessary to remove the old coating of varnish or paint, for which various washes and solvents are used today, and you will also have to work well with sandpaper so that not a trace remains of the old coating.

The work is time consuming and you need a lot of patience in monotonous work.

And now the long-awaited moment has come (painting). The master will paint his table with a spray can of paint, of course you cannot paint the whole table with one spray can, you will have to fork out for 2-3 cans. The author paints with a thin layer so that the drawing of the tree is slightly visible.
If you have a puller, it will be much easier and more economical for you to paint the restored furniture.

Painting should be carried out at a certain distance and evenly distribute a stream of paint from a spray can over the surface to be painted in order to avoid smudges.

After the table has been painted and a certain time allotted for drying has passed, the master applies an additional layer of varnish, just as easily you can rub it with a special composition based on wax, so that the product shines and shines playing with color in the sun.

In place of the old fittings, a new one is screwed in, suitable for the new style of the table. Here, everyone should have their own choice and preference.

Here's a look at the beauty that came out in the end.
