What can swings be made from? Do-it-yourself metal swing - how to make and equip iron structures for the street

How can you diversify your vacation in the country, make it easy, fun and enjoyable? There are many ways, and one of them is to install a swing in the garden or on a specially provided playground. Whether it will be a separate building or a device in the gaming complex - it does not matter, the main thing is that it brings a lot of joy and positive. To save money, and at the same time to please your loved ones, you can build a garden swing with your own hands: they will compare favorably with purchased models with originality of the idea and exclusive finish.

Before you start sketching, you need to answer two questions: where will the structure be installed and for whom is it intended? Depending on the answers, they make an estimate, prepare a drawing of a garden swing, select tools and material.

Swings located on the street are often equipped with a canopy, which serves as protection from the sun (rain) and at the same time is an interesting decor.

One of the simplest structures is a swing on A-shaped supports with a bar seat

There are a lot of solutions, so for convenience, all products can be divided into three categories:

  • For the whole family. This is a large structure, often in the form of a bench with a high back, which can accommodate several people. The product is suspended from a strong U-shaped frame using chains. A small canopy on the cross beam allows you to use the swing in almost any weather.
  • Baby. A rather diverse group: here are frameless products, consisting only of a suspension and a seat, and strong structures with a seat in the form of an armchair, and large structures such as “boats”. Wireframe models are safer. On swings of any type for the smallest children, fixation belts should be provided.
  • Portable. Mobile swings of this type are usually hung indoors: in the house, on the veranda, in the gazebo. They can be removed at any time and installed in another place.

Each of these types has its own advantages and can be used in the country for recreation and entertainment.

Bench swing: step by step instructions

Swinging alone is certainly boring, so we present an option for a fun company - a swing in the form of a wide bench that can accommodate several people.

The proposed parameters can be changed - for example, make the seat wider or narrower, the height of the back a little more or less. The main thing is that you can sit comfortably and relax. This swing is designed for a garden or recreation area, both children and adults can use it.

Taking the seat-bench as a basis, you can invent various design options for the swing as a whole.

The swing sofa is suitable both for relaxing with a book and for a fun conversation with friends.

Country swings can be hung from a large horizontal branch, but it is better to install two poles with a cross beam specifically for them.

Preparation of materials and tools

If construction has recently been carried out at the dacha, there will be no questions in the search for materials - after all, everything you need is already at hand. Wood is the best material for making, it is soft and pliable to work with, but strong enough to support the weight of several people. Birch, spruce or pine are perfect both in terms of characteristics and cost.

Boards - a suitable and inexpensive material for the construction of a swing

So, the list of materials:

  • pine boards (100 mm x 25 mm) 2500 mm long - 15 pieces;
  • board (150 mm x 50 mm) 2500 mm - 1 piece;
  • self-tapping screws (80 x 4.5) - 30-40 pieces;
  • self-tapping screws (51x3.5) - 180-200 pieces;
  • carbines - 6 pieces;
  • welded chain (5 mm) - according to the height of the swing;
  • galvanized screws with rings - 4 pieces (a pair of 12x100 and a pair of 12x80).

Metal parts and screws can be combined in color with wood or, conversely, be contrasting (for example, black).

For the construction of garden swings made of wood, traditional tools for processing this material are suitable: a drill with various drills, a circular saw, a hammer, a jigsaw or a hacksaw, a planer. A square, tape measure and pencil are useful for measuring workpieces.

Procedure

From the boards should be sawn off pieces one and a half meters long. The corners of the workpieces must be straight.

Thanks to the precise marking, the swing will be smooth and beautiful

The thickness of the finished strips should not be less than 20 mm. The load on the back will be much less, so a thickness of 12-13 mm is enough. The approximate number of slats for the seat (500 mm) is 17 pieces, for the backrest (450 mm) - 15 pieces.

To protect the wood from cracking, holes for self-tapping screws are drilled with a drill, choosing a thin drill. The depth of the hole for the self-tapping screw is 2-2.5 mm.

Holes for self-tapping screws help save wood

To make the seat and back comfortable, it is better to make the details of the base on which the planks are attached not straight, but figured. For their manufacture, you will need the thickest board (150 mm x 50 mm). Thus, you get six curly parts for the frame.

The contours of the future part, applied to the workpiece with a pencil or marker, will help to cut it accurately

Having chosen the required angle of connection of the back and seat, you should combine the parts into a frame and fix the slats one by one, making the same intervals between them. First, the ends of the parts are attached, then the middle.

Having nailed the central bar first, it is easier to align the rest of the elements.

The armrests are made of two bars of arbitrary width, then fixed with one end - on the seat, the other - on the back frame.

Finished swing must be varnished or painted

The best place to attach the screw with the ring is the bottom of the armrest post.

Washers must be used to prevent the nuts from fully embedding in the wood. Similar rings are screwed to the upper beam, on which the swing will hang. The chain is attached to the rings with the help of carabiners - the place of rest and entertainment is ready!

Simple swing with various seating options

A simple and versatile option is the swing side racks, on which you can hang various types of seats. Let us dwell in more detail on the installation of the holding structure.

Part of the chain can be replaced with cylindrical wooden blocks

The material and tools for construction are the same as in the previous description.

One of the seat options is a sofa designed for 2-3 people

Externally, the design looks like this: two racks in the form of the letter "A", connected by the upper crossbar. To begin with, it is important to calculate the angle of connection of vertically standing parts. The greater the width of the intended seat, the wider the racks should be placed. The bars (or poles) are fastened in the upper part with bolts - for reliability.

Racks for the supporting structure

So that the vertical elements do not diverge, they are fixed with crossbars at a height of 1/3 from the ground. When installed, the crossbars will be parallel to each other. The best fasteners for them are corners planted on self-tapping screws.

Fixing the carrier beam with additional elements

Usually one pair of crossbars is enough for the screed, but sometimes they make a second one - in the upper part of the structure. Together with them, they reinforce the attachment point of the upper crossbar - metal or wooden linings in the form of a trapezoid are mounted on the inside.

Cross bars increase the stability of the supporting structure

A support transverse beam is attached to the finished side posts, and then the structure is installed in the ground. To do this, they dig two pairs of holes (at least 70-80 cm deep - for greater stability), at the bottom of which crushed stone pillows (20 cm) are arranged, racks are inserted and poured with concrete. To check the even horizontal location of the upper beam, use the building level.

For the smallest summer residents, an armchair with insurance is suitable

The upper crossbar can be equipped with fasteners installed at different widths, as a result we get a structure on which you can hang various swings - from simple rope swings to a family sofa.

Material on how to make a hanging chair with your own hands may also be useful:

When installing a children's swing, it should be remembered that safety comes first, so all the details should be carefully sanded with sandpaper. For the same reason, wooden elements must be "no hitch, no hitch" - defective wood is not suitable for load-bearing structures. Sharp corners must be smoothed out with a file.

For quick processing of wood using a grinder

It is also worth taking care of the swings themselves. Treatment with impregnation, finishing with paint or varnish will prolong the existence of the structure, and galvanized fasteners will avoid the destruction of wood from the inside.

Photo gallery of original ideas

Since you will make the swing yourself, you can dream up and give them some originality. Of course, decorating a product is a purely individual decision, but some ideas can be borrowed from ready-made designs.

What do children do in their free time on the street? Run and play, build a house out of sand, ride a bike, kick a ball. And many kids enjoy spending time on the swings. They are very fond of rising and falling sharply. Such a swing can be made with your own hands, using improvised material for this.

For several centuries, swings have remained a popular attraction, not only for children, but also for adults. Not a single folk festival in Ancient Russia was complete without “flights” on these devices. During the Russian Empire, they were both among the poor and the rich. Naturally, they looked different: the poor swung on ordinary wooden boards tied to poles with ropes, while the swings of the rich were decorated with decorative elements, pillows, bows and ruffles. In our time, interest in them does not fade away, they can also be seen on courtyard grounds, in many children's organizations, in country "residences".

What material is suitable for the manufacture of yard swings

You can make a swing with your own hands, using almost everything that is at hand for this.

Table: advantages and disadvantages of different materials

swing designs

According to the design features, the swings are:

  • frame;
  • suspended;
  • floor;
  • transformers;
  • electronic type.

Age preferences for frame-type swings are children from 3 to 10 years old. Such structures have a great advantage - mobility. They can be placed in any area of \u200b\u200bthe summer cottage or playground. They are strong enough to support the weight of primary school children.

Suspended swings are attached to the beam-beam. To do this, you can use chains, ropes, ropes. Their reliability increases with the use of a strong crossbar and subject to proper fastening.

Floor structures can be used by children under 5 years old. Most often, when creating them, plastic and metal parts are combined.

For very young children, you can make a rocking chair-transformer, which combines several elements at once:

  • Chair for babies;
  • mini chair;
  • swing directly.

The modern world cannot be imagined without electronics. There are swings equipped with a special system, which may include:

  • timer;
  • "music Center";
  • a device for setting the rhythm of swing movements.

They should be purchased only if your family has a newborn child.

What functions can a swing perform

Swings, despite similar functions, may differ slightly from each other. This is due to the design of these structures, and their principles of operation.

Which adult does not remember such rides as boats? This type of swing can be used to entertain both children and their parents.

There are several types of children's structures, designated by one concept - a swing-balancer. Such devices include swings:

  • "scales";
  • "pendulum";
  • "rocker".

Such fun fun is suitable even for small children. With the support of an adult, a one-year-old baby can also ride on a swing.

In our time, manufacturers of children's structures offer a rich variety of spring devices for swinging with balancing.

Of course, swings can be purchased at the store, but it’s better to work hard and build the swing yourself. Years will pass, but your child, who has already matured, will definitely remember the minutes of “ups” and “falls” on the swing that you made with your own hands.

Preparatory work

If you decide to build a children's swing yourself, then you should do the preparatory work:

  • determine the type of future design;
  • specify parameters;
  • draw a drawing;
  • purchase the necessary materials;
  • get all the tools you need.

Material selection

The simplest swing design is suspended. You can make them completely wooden or combine different materials. For hanging elements, metal chains, ropes, a strong cord, parachute lines or a rope are most often used.

As a seat, it is best to use a polished board, because it is comfortable, does not crack in the cold, and will not cause discomfort to the child in the heat and cold. You can use improvised means - old seats from chairs, armchairs, etc.

If you have more than one child or guests with children often come to you, then you can make a balancer for two. They are made from different materials. The advantages of metal swings are in their strength, but for an independent construction of such a design, you will need a good welder. Wooden swings are easier to make and less dangerous to use.

Material calculation

It is easiest to make a hanging swing with a metal support and a wooden swing-balancer.

The materials you will need are:

  • 2 iron pipes for supporting pillars (d=74 cm);
  • 2 bearings;
  • 1 metal pipe (for the crossbar) 50 cm long (d = 150 mm);
  • ready-made mortar for concreting;
  • apparatus for welding;
  • 2 metal plates no longer than 7 cm.

For the swing-balancer, prepare:

  • any wooden material (average length - 2.5 meters). You can take an ordinary thin log, timber (thickness 40–50 mm) or a board about 25 cm wide.
  • boards for seats (width - 30-40 cm, length - 45-60 cm) with a thickness of at least 30 mm.
  • metal rod for support.
  • hardware.
  • paint or primer.
  • 2 wooden handles (they can be made from a wooden rod with a diameter of 25 mm, about 60 cm long).

Schemes of street swings

You can facilitate the work of making a swing by drawing up a design diagram. Drawings are made independently (for individual parameters) or are taken ready-made from various sources.

Photo gallery: examples of drawings

The design of the swing must be very stable
Based on the drawn up scheme, you can build a frame swing made of wood
Be sure to indicate the dimensions of each part on the diagram.

Tool preparation

Depending on which design you prefer, you need to prepare:

  • welding machine;
  • drill;
  • hammer;
  • shovel or hand drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • grinder;
  • hacksaw;
  • roulette;
  • plane.

Step-by-step instructions for making a hanging swing with a chain and a wooden seat

Having prepared everything you need, you can get to work:

There is another reliable way to fasten the supports and the crossbar - by welding a special design (this option is very suitable for connecting wooden structural elements).

In the central part of the crossbar, bearings are attached using metal plates. The bearings must ensure the movement of the swing in the forward / backward direction. The next steps are:

The condition of the swing should be carefully monitored. It is necessary to regularly lubricate the bearings with machine oil and tint shabby parts.

Before you invite the kids to ride, try the swing yourself.

How to make a do-it-yourself wooden swing-balancer for a child

Based on the drawings made and armed with the necessary materials, tools, you can begin to assemble a wooden swing-balancer. The work is carried out in 4 stages:

  • base installation;
  • manufacture of rocker-balancer;
  • assembly;
  • product painting.

The base is the basis for the reliability of the design for children. This swing element can be built from a wooden beam (10x15 cm), a log (20 cm), boards (not thinner than 3 cm), fixing them in the intended place of the future swing. A lower frame about 1 m long is constructed from wood and vertical supports or racks are attached to it (using self-tapping screws) at an angle.

The rocker-balancer is easiest to make from a bar or a thick board.

For the entire length of the balancer (up to 2.5–3 m), 2 beams are laid parallel to each other, shorter beams (up to 1 m) are placed between them (on both sides). The entire structure obtained is fixed with screws or waterproof glue (for carpentry). You can use one board.

At the edges of the rocker, seats with handles are made, in its central part there is a hole for a profile pipe.

Handles, like all other wooden parts, must be perfectly smooth so that the child does not drive a splinter into the skin.

The assembly of the rocker arm and the base is carried out using two pipes: a support pipe and a segment mounted in the center of the swing. They are combined, a steel rod is inserted into pre-drilled holes on both pipes.

Decorating process

After the swing is mounted, you need to take care of their appearance. The easiest way to paint them with oil paint. This method is suitable for both wooden and metal structures. You can dream up and make the swing especially attractive for kids.

Do not neglect the rules for using a children's swing, which will help to avoid injuries. It is forbidden:

  1. Getting too close to them while they are being used by other children.
  2. Swing while standing, resting your feet on the seat.
  3. Twist ropes, chains or other hanging elements.
  4. Get off the swing before it comes to a complete stop.
  5. Sit on the same seat for several children at once.

Before operating the swing, it is necessary to carefully inspect all nodes and connections for their integrity and functionality. Regularly lubricate the swing, preventing the appearance of rust and creaking. Make sure that there are no sharp objects, protruding bolts, unsanded wood sections in the structure.

Making a swing with your own hands is easy. The main thing is to adhere to the manufacturing technology of the product and the recommendations of specialists.

In a summer cottage or garden plot, in a garden or a country house, swings have become not just a whim or luxury, but a necessary element of improvement. In addition, garden (country) swings are one of the simplest and most inexpensive ways to make outdoor recreation as comfortable as possible. In a country house or on a terrace, in a gazebo or under a canopy, on a plot or just near your favorite big tree - swings have become an important part of organizing outdoor recreation and leisure. If there is a demand, then the offer will not be long in coming. Manufacturers offer us a wide range of garden swings of various modifications. Different material of execution, dimensions, method of fastening, design and level of comfort dictate a wide range of prices for such a popular subject for arranging a summer cottage or the adjacent territory of a country house. Country swings have become not only a part of landscape design, but also its decoration.

A variety of models of country swings

Garden swings have many variations of execution, they may differ according to the following criteria:

  • frame and seat material (metal, wood, plastic, wicker or rattan);
  • mounting method (suspended or free-standing swings, hammocks and rocking chairs);
  • color performance;
  • level of comfort (the presence of a soft seat, related accessories - armrests, soft back);
  • performance style (modern, country, beach, traditional);
  • dimensions of the product and the maximum allowable weight (not only the dimensions, but also the type of construction, the material of the frame, fasteners and the seat itself affect the weight tolerance limit);
  • the possibility of year-round use or installation exclusively indoors (only the material of execution of the structural elements has an effect).

Free standing garden swing

This section includes all self-sufficient models that do not need additional supports and suspensions. Such a swing can be installed in any convenient place and transferred if necessary. It is mobility that is most often the key criterion when choosing a garden swing model for many owners of summer cottages and country houses. Swings that do not require supports for suspension can be installed in an open area for the summer, and hidden under a canopy or in a garage (shed) the rest of the time.

If you transfer a portable swing to a glazed veranda or covered terrace for the winter, you can please yourself and your family with a slight swing in a comfortable environment even in the cold season. Most often, to increase the comfort of such a swing, the owners use soft removable mattresses and pillows. The covers for such soft swing elements are most often removable and easy to wash in a washing machine. Soft parts often come with a swing, but can also be purchased separately if the model does not provide for their presence.

Modern models of free-standing swings most often have a visor, a small tent, or any other option for a roof over the seat. This design allows you to protect those sitting on the swing from the hot summer sun or light rain. Many models are improved with various accessories and additions - comfortable armrests with holes for installing a glass or a cup of tea, a mosquito net that comes with the kit allows you to be on the swing in the evening, when the presence of insects in the summer cottage is especially noticeable and unpleasant (such models are purchased by homeowners with small children ).

Wooden garden swings that do not require additional supports have been very popular lately. The natural material of the construction most organically fits into the surrounding picture of a garden or summer cottage, landscape design of a private courtyard.

Wooden swings look luxurious, but they also require more effort to care for than usual (compared to metal or rubber counterparts). As a rule, manufacturers, before sending wooden models for sale, impregnate the products with special antiseptics and varnish them to prevent rotting of the material and the formation of fungus. But during operation, you will need to “refresh” the impregnation and coating. The frequency of use of antiseptics will depend on the type of wood. Usually, the instructions for the product contain all the necessary information on care, but more often than once every 1.5-2 years you will not need to take any action to care for the product.

Nevertheless, wooden products are recommended to be cleaned for the winter in a dry and well-ventilated room. This approach will help not only preserve the original appearance of the swing for many years, but also significantly reduce the frequency of using antiseptic sprays and varnishes for coating wooden surfaces.

The original wooden swing, the frame or all the elements of which are made of logs, is perfect for the ensemble of a country house or summer cottage, made in country style.

Suspended structures

The most simple and memorable for many of us, from our childhood impressions of relaxing in a country house or in a private courtyard, is a version of a swing - a suspended structure that was attached to a tree branch or any crossbar. Modern landscape design is multifaceted, you can hang the most ordinary swing, consisting only of a seat, to an arch or pergola, if you already have them in your backyard.

A more advanced version of the hanging swing has a back, often equipped with armrests, soft removable mattresses for the seat. On such a swing, you can stay in a comfortable and comfortable position for a long time, read books, have conversations or just enjoy the surrounding view, the purity of the countryside air.

Such models can be hung on strong ropes or metal chains. Both options are quite reliable and the choice of one or another mount will largely depend on your personal preferences. Both variations require the installation of special hooks in the ceiling of the canopy or terrace roof, and ropes or chains will be attached to them.

Chains for garden swings are made of stainless metals that do not require painting. But to ensure that the moving parts of the structure are lubricated while using the swing, it is necessary for the owners of the site or country house. Also, before using a hanging swing, before the start of a new warm season, it is necessary to check the fasteners not only on the roof, but also on the seat.

Hanging swings on ropes are not recommended for use without a canopy or roof over them. Although the ropes are impregnated with a special compound that helps the material resist decay, its action is not endless. Suspended structures on ropes are great for location on terraces, arbors with a solid roof or under canopies.

Seats and backs in hanging models can be made of wood, metal, plastic, or a wicker element made of wicker or rattan. Each material option has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, a plastic seat significantly reduces the cost of the entire product, it is not affected by moisture and other weather phenomena, and it is incredibly easy to care for it. But plastic products do not differ in high strength and durability, they are subject to all types of mechanical influences, and at low temperatures they can simply crack.

Wicker seats, more like comfortable sofas, look very colorful, especially if your terrace, in addition to swings, is equipped with garden furniture made of a similar material and in a similar design. Most often, such models are made of artificial rattan, because natural material is quite expensive, and an analogue made of wicker is not durable.

Popular oval-shaped hanging swings, made of natural or artificial rattan, began to be used to arrange a recreation area not only in the premises of country houses, but also outside the premises. Hang similar models on verandas, terraces and under patio awnings.

Swing alternative

Alternative options for installing a swing include hanging a hammock or installing rocking chairs. Of course, it is not possible to fully compensate for the lack of a swing for a hammock, designed more for relaxing in a prone position, but for many owners of country houses and summer cottages, this way of relaxing is a priority. A hammock is inexpensive, it is easy to hang it between two trees, poles or any other stable and durable supports. You can wash the hammock in the washing machine and put it away for the period of rains and frosts, keeping the original "marketable" appearance for a long time. And yet, a hammock is a resting place for one person, while a swing (depending on size) can accommodate several people.

Rocking chairs installed on an open terrace, under a canopy or in a gazebo are an excellent opportunity not only to organize a place of rest and relaxation in the fresh air, but also to create the most comfortable environment in a summer cottage or garden plot.

Choosing a place for installing a garden swing

Where to install or hang a swing in a garden or garden plot? It is necessary to answer this question before buying the product itself. After all, the choice of installation or hanging garden swing depends on the capabilities of your site, the presence or absence of buildings, additional elements of landscape design and the presence of large trees with a spreading crown.

Free-standing swings that do not require additional supports can theoretically be installed in any place convenient for the owners of the site. But such an approach is possible only in theory, but in practice it will be necessary to decide who and for what purpose will use the swing. If children will mainly swing on the country swing, then installing the product on an asphalted or paved with stone (brick) platform is not the best option in terms of safety in case of possible falls. If adults sit on the swing (and most often not alone), i.e. the weight of the structure with users "on board" will be significantly greater, it is better to resort to installation on a hard surface. Settling of the swing legs into the ground cannot be avoided, so a patio area paved with one or another material (from stone to wood) will be the best option.

Hanging swings on ropes or metal chains can be hung on a tree branch. But it is important to understand that the tree must be strong, with thick and strong branches. And even in this case, the maximum allowable weight of those sitting on the swing will not be high. This version of the swing is more suitable for use by children and adolescents or adults with a small weight.

If your country house is located near a reservoir, then most likely it stands on stilts. In some cases, the floors of the house are located high enough above ground level and this distance is enough to hang a small swing.

The location of a spacious hanging swing under a canopy or on a terrace is a great opportunity to organize a place of rest with the most comfortable conditions. Under the roof of the terrace you will be in the shade and under protection from the sun's rays, rain and light wind are not terrible here. Under a canopy or on a terrace, you can use mattresses and pillows with covers made of fabrics that are prone to fading in the sun or luxurious textiles that you would simply feel sorry for exposing to the effects of all possible natural phenomena.

Most often, when choosing a color palette for a swing that will be hung on the terrace, they are guided by the elementary principles of combinatorics. Depending on the color schemes of the facade of the building and the design of the terrace, the swing can either become an accent spot or organically fit into the overall picture. Most often, the swing is matched in color to the rest of the garden furniture located on the terrace - armchairs or a sofa, a coffee table.

Another option for choosing a color for a swing is a combination of a bright or contrasting shade with some element of the terrace against the background of a neutral or light image of the entire building. For example, a bright swing can match the color of the shutters or the front door, the design of the porch or the railing on the platform (terrace).

You can also hang a garden swing indoors on a glazed terrace or veranda. If it often rains in your area, or even in summer there are rarely warm days, then this option may be the only one available in terms of practicality and comfort.

Today, a large number of people have country houses or summer cottages - places where you can relax and unwind from everyday hustle and bustle. Today we will tell you how to make a metal garden swing with your own hands for your summer cottage.

This material is conditionally divided into 3 parts.

  • In the first part: the use of metal to build a swing, and why country builders prefer it. We will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of such structures, calculate the mass of planned attractions, and also talk about the types of attachment for stationary and hanging swings.
  • In the second part: we will tell you how to make an outdoor metal swing for a summer residence in the form of a bench or a sofa with your own hands, we will also give recommendations on the installation of single structures. And you will also learn how to make a swing seat from a profile pipe with your own hands, as well as a frame.
  • In the third part: a little about decorating and caring for iron swings, as well as features of the choice in the store.

Advantages and disadvantages of a profile pipe

If you understand in detail the advantages of a profile pipe, you get the following list.

  • The shape of the pipe is optimized for fast production, which means it is very easy and convenient to work with.
  • A very economical material, especially when compared with reinforcing structures.
  • The stiffening ribs, which are located on the structure, greatly increase the upper limit of permissible loads.
  • The material perfectly resists mechanical damage - it is difficult to deform it with a blow.

However, along with the advantages, the swing from the profile pipe also has its drawbacks:

  • Most of the operations that can be done with the pipe do not require sophisticated equipment. Except one - bending. It is very difficult to bend it, and all because of those very stiffeners. For this you need a special machine.
  • Carbon steel rusts easily and is easily damaged by moisture. This shortcoming can be eliminated using the galvanizing procedure, but it also greatly increases the price of the final structure.

Calculation of a profile pipe to determine the mass of a swing

When calculating the size of a swing made of metal, it is necessary to calculate its mass. This will help in the future to determine whether a foundation is needed and what loads the swing will withstand.

  • When using a square profile pipe with dimensions of 20x20 and a thickness of 1 mm, the weight of one meter of the tube will be ~ 600 g (it all depends on the steel grade).
  • A 30x30 pipe with a thickness of 1 mm has a weight of 900 g, respectively.
  • A profile pipe 40x40 with a wall thickness of 2 mm per 1 meter of length will weigh ~ 2300 gr.

Using the data provided, it is easy to calculate the approximate mass of both pipes and the frame of a future garden swing from a profile pipe. We can do this in the following way.

For example, the design uses 8.5 meters of a pipe measuring 30x30x1mm and 3 meters of a pipe measuring 50x50x2mm. Calculate the structural weight:

  1. 8.5*900=7650 gr (total pipe weight 30x30x1mm);
  2. Since the pipe 40x40x2mm weighs 2300 g, the pipe 50x50x2 has a weight, respectively, 2300 + 2300 * 0.25 = 2875 g.
  3. 3*2875=8625 gr (total pipe weight 50x50x2mm).

Appointment of a profile pipe for a swing

In order to correctly answer this question, it is necessary to explain what types of pipes are used for which parts of the swing.

  1. Round (oval) pipes. Suitable for curved structures (e.g. seats, armrests, arches).
  2. Square and rectangular pipes. They have good strength, suitable for parts that are placed on the surface (vertical racks, spacers).
  3. Flat pipes - suitable for auxiliary elements (horizontal struts).

Swing attachment types and classification

Before choosing a scheme according to which we will assemble a metal swing with our own hands, we need to decide on the methods of attaching them to the supporting structure.

There are two main types of attachments for hanging swings:

  • on eye nuts;
  • to nodes.

In the first case, you do the following:

  1. Make through holes in a horizontal beam with a drill (~ 5 mm);
  2. Insert long bolts with washers, tighten the eye nuts;
  3. Attach carabiners and chains or ropes to them.

In the second case, the sequence is:

  1. Throw the ropes over the crossbar;
  2. Making a sea knot
  3. Attach the other ends of the rope to the seat.

Hanging metal swing

Homemade swings for summer cottages made of metal are often quite small in size. These are usually small seats for one person, mostly for children. They do not need a fixed base to hang them in the yard, they only need a tree with thick enough branches or a supporting structure.

Hanging swings are most often hung on a chain or strong ropes - depending on the desire and style. At the same time, you can fix them without damaging the branch itself: wrap the chain or rope with a sliding knot, which will provide a fairly strong grip. The main thing here is to correctly calculate the thickness of the suspension itself.

Chain attachment example.

  1. Drill a large through hole along the width of the seat with a thickness of 7-9 mm (along the red line in the picture);
  2. Pull the chain through the drilled chain hole;
  3. Screw the steel bolts along the edges of the seat in such a way as to fix the chain.

Stationary metal swing

Do-it-yourself stationary garden swing from a profile pipe is a more complex option, but no less popular. Great if you need to install seats for two or three people.

For a stationary swing, in addition to the seat itself, it is necessary to make a frame from a profile pipe. This is the supporting element of the entire structure, the heaviest loads will fall on it, so you need to do it with all the attention. Mounting to a stationary frame has several varieties.

Where to install a metal swing on the site

Before you weld a swing or buy it in a store, you need to choose a place on the site, we recommend that you adhere to the following rules:

  1. The swing should be located in an open area near the house. The ideal option is 10-20 meters so that you can watch your children play;
  2. There should be no communications above the iron swing (water, power lines and other wires);
  3. There should be no roads nearby (it is best to put a fence around).

Having decided on the place, it is necessary to prepare a drawing-project of your design. We recommend that you specify all dimensions in advance - this way you will save a lot of time and resources for revisions and alterations.

Swing in the form of a bench or sofa with a metal frame

This type of swing is common among manufacturers - today on the market you will find a large number of ready-made assembled models of this type. They are distinguished by practicality and relative cheapness. Such swings are suitable for joint gatherings in the evening after a hard day or on weekends with children and loved ones.

Before you buy materials and start making an iron swing yourself, familiarize yourself with the design features:

  • this type of metal swing for giving can be both portable and stationary;
  • the foundation of a portable structure is not required - the square at the base is the support. In case you decide to make a stationary swing, we recommend that you keep in mind the columnar foundation;
  • a canopy is often made to such structures - it can be either a polycarbonate roof or a stretched awning.

Materials and tools

To make a swing from a profile pipe with your own hands, you will need a whole list of tools and materials:

  • Round profile pipe for a frame with a diameter of 20 mm, 14170 mm (take a meter or two more with a margin);
  • 4 steel corners;
  • 2 steel arcs, each 250 mm long and 15 mm in diameter;
  • 2 wooden canvases;
  • a cable, chain or any other suspension that can withstand a load of up to 250-300 kilograms;
  • welding machine;
  • pliers;
  • hammer;
  • vise;
  • grinder or hacksaw;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • special paint for metal against corrosion;
  • eye screws 5x80mm, 4 pieces.
  • shackle M5, 6 pieces;
  • bolt M6x30, 4 pieces;
  • nut M6, 4 pieces;
  • spring washer M6, 4 pieces.

Step-by-step instruction

Cutting parts from profile pipes for iron street swings. For side racks, you will need pieces of 2500 mm, 4 pieces. On the crossbar you will need a piece of pipe, 2100 mm long.

We cut off the edge of the pipe at 30 degrees at the end, after which we weld them into an isosceles triangle using a welding machine.

We measure 2000 mm from the top of the uprights and weld a 1035 mm long horizontal bar to strengthen the frame. See the drawing of a garden swing made of metal, which we made for you with our own hands.

We weld a horizontal crossbar at the ends of the vertical racks. After that, the seat will be attached to it. The distance between the A-posts is 2000 mm, the crossbar protrudes 50 mm on each side.

Let's create a swing bench from a profile pipe with our own hands. We take several bars 30x30x6000 mm and shorten them. You should get segments of 1500 mm in the amount of 24 pieces. We clean them with sandpaper or a machine tool. Or you can take a bar 100x100 and fit it to the required dimensions. It is not necessary to cut 30x30, you can use 20x50 and 30x70, etc.

We apply paint and varnish on the surface to prevent rotting of the wood.

We make a frame from a pipe 15 mm in diameter. We weld the segments together and attach the bars with bolts. The distance between them is 20-25mm. Along the edges, we weld eye nuts for attaching the chain (two on one side, two on the other). You can also experiment with the distance between the bars (it all depends on their size). More details on the drawing of a swing from a profile pipe.

We fasten the seat to the vertical posts of the metal swing frame. We drill through holes in the crossbar for bolts with eye nuts. We thread them and twist them. We connect the carabiners with all the eye nuts and attach the chain.

We dig 4 holes with a depth of 450mm. To do this, we use a hand iron drill.

Mixing concrete. Add cement, sand and water to the container in proportions of 1:2:3. It is best to use cement labeled as M400.

At the bottom we fall asleep a pillow of sand 100mm, after which we install the racks in the pits. We throw a few large stones for the stability of the structure, after which we fill everything with concrete. We are waiting for 3-4 days until everything dries. The design is ready

Metal single swing

Do-it-yourself single swings from pipes can be welded both stationary and portable - it all depends on who will use them and how much free space you have on the site.

Stationary swings have the greatest stability of all the listed options: children will not be able to turn them over even during the most active game. However, because of this, they have a drawback - low mobility: they cannot be removed during bad weather. Portable, of course, are not as stable, but also much more convenient than stationary ones.

The main stages of installation

To weld the swing frame from the profile, you need to take the pipe and cut it into two equal parts, each 3100 mm. Cut the edges of the vertical racks at an angle of 45 degrees. After that, it is necessary to form the letter P - weld the third to the ends of these two segments. Its edges should also be cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

The second step is the formation of a do-it-yourself metal swing structure on bearings. We need two pieces 5 centimeters long from a pipe with a diameter of 90 millimeters. Bearings are inserted into them, after which they are scalded for fixing. On the other hand, for additional fixation, a small piece of metal is welded over the pipe. A piece of pipe with a diameter of 27 millimeters will be inserted into the bearings.

Two plates are welded to a 27 mm pipe - this will be fasteners for carabiners. The bearing structure itself is fixed on the crossbar with the help of two pieces of metal. They are welded on the sides of the pipe into which they are inserted into the bearings. Important - before starting the assembly of this part, apply grease to the bearing and periodically moisten it with water. If this is not done, then the material will heat up from welding, the steel will expand and the structure will be damaged.

After the assembly of the frame is over, it is necessary to dig two holes under it, insert the ends of the pipe there and carefully concrete everything. After the concrete has dried, it is necessary to weld stabilizing slopes from the remains of the pipes.

A frame is welded under the seat of a garden metal swing from a prepared profile pipe. We use a welding machine. At the edges we fasten the eye nuts (marked with green dots).

We fasten the carabiners to the eye nuts and connect everything with a steel chain.

How to make metal swing seats

Such double swings from a profile pipe can often be found on playgrounds. First, a few words about the advantages and disadvantages.

Large metal outdoor swing

Advantages:

  • strength is the most important advantage of such a swing. Stiffeners greatly increase the bending resistance of the structure;
  • profitability - profile pipes are easy to manufacture, which helps to significantly reduce the cost of all materials;
  • durability.

Disadvantages:

  • careful care - if you do not galvanize the profile pipes and do not cover them with protective compounds, then after a while rust will appear;
  • the complexity of bending pipes - this may require additional equipment.

How to weld a frame for a swing made of metal with your own hands to the country house, prepare the foundation and hang the seats, we have repeatedly told, so now we will tell you which seat is suitable for such a design and its dimensions.

The following parts are needed: 3x1600m; 3x880mm; 2x200mm; 5x500mm. More details on the drawing.

A long section of 1600 mm is installed, 3 short pieces of 500 mm each are welded to it - the letter Sh is obtained. Another long section is welded from the free ends. The back is formed in the same way. Everything is fixed with corners along the edges of each part of the structure and welded together at an angle of 90 degrees. Two pieces of board are attached to the structure with bolts.

To make the back more comfortable for sitting, you need to set it at an angle of 115 degrees. To do this, you need to make an appropriate section at the ends of 880 mm segments for the back.

To independently create a garden swing frame from a professional pipe, we recommend that you follow the algorithm of actions, as in the video below.

Decorating and caring for metal swings

In order for the swing from the pipes that you made with your own hands to last as long as possible, we recommend that you pre-decorate them and, after every six months or a year, tint them with special paint for metal.

Here's what else you can cover the metal with:

  • rust solvent;
  • paint-enamel for metal;
  • primer for surface treatment;
  • paint with the addition of metal powder (yellow).

After the building is completed, you can decorate the structure:

  1. Sew seat covers. For them, a dense fabric that is not afraid of contact with moisture is suitable.
  2. Paint the side racks with patterns or drawings. To do this, you need a stencil with patterns or figures, paint for metal and a brush (or sponge). Attach the stencil to the walls. Take a sponge and wet it with paint. Blot the stencil and remove it. Repeat the procedure several times.
  3. Decorate the area next to a homemade iron swing for the street. Plant flowers, build a small decorative fence, arrange sculptures.

How to choose a metal swing

When buying a metal swing for giving in a store, you should pay attention to:

  • size and dimensions. As a rule, the swing has a width of 2-2.5, which is universal and allows you to easily install it on any type of site. If you need unique dimensions, it is best to make to order.
  • Manufacturing material. Decide in advance what kind of material you want to see. The classic version is made of metal and wood, but there are also modern materials, such as high-strength plastic, steel bars.
  • Price. This is an important factor, since on the market you can find absolutely any model for a different budget.

We offer to consider several models of single and double metal swings, which are now popular on the market:

Reading time ≈ 10 minutes

It's nice to sit on a bench after a long day at work. It is also much more pleasant to relax on a garden swing, which will give light swaying and soothing coolness. Buy, unfortunately, such a design is not always possible. After all, the cost of such a swing is high, often sky-high. Therefore, let's talk about how to build gardens in order to enjoy a pleasant outdoor recreation.

Beautiful garden swing in the country

Undeniable advantages of a garden swing. Varieties

At the dacha or in the yard of a country house, garden swings are an indispensable attribute of landscape design. In addition to a great place to relax, they perform many functions:

  1. resting on them, you can easily gather your strength;
  2. calm the nervous system;
  3. beautiful decoration helps to transform the entire yard;
  4. a comfortable place to work at a laptop or to read books;
  5. you can nap on them during the day (especially for children);
  6. suitable for a pleasant tea party and conversations with a glass of wine;
  7. children are helped to train and develop the vestibular apparatus.

As you can see, the benefits are really huge. Therefore, it is logical that their popularity is so high among the population. The design, in fact, is not very complicated, so even a beginner in the construction business will be able to build such a swing at home.

Another advantage of own construction is the full compliance with your desires. You can decorate or decorate it yourself, choose a special shape and size. The main thing is to follow the instructions during construction, then everything will definitely work out.

Before you start making a garden swing, you need to consider what they are. For example, for the purpose:

  • for children;
  • for adults;
  • for the whole family.

Depending on the location there are:

  • stationary swing;
  • mobile swing. Convenient in that you do not need to be tied to a specific place. You can easily and quickly move it to another area.

If we talk about the main materials used, then the swing is:

  • from wood;
  • from metal.

The design can also be very different.

Suspended.

This option is simple. All that is needed to create such a swing is a crossbar, a high strength rope and a seat (it is better to choose with a back).

Hanging garden swing

Frame.

Often used for children. They are strong and stable and easily moved. So at any time you can move the swing to the shade or another place you like.

Frame garden swing

Crafting on wood requires crafting a seat. Everything else is easy. After all, it is not necessary to make a frame in this case. After the construction of the structure, it must be fixed to a tree (make sure that the branch used is strong) or a beam. For fixing, a cross-twist rope with a diameter of at least 24 mm is suitable (especially for swings on which children will ride).

You can replace the rope with a chain suspension. So you make the whole structure much stronger. So that the chain links do not harm children (fingers can get into the links), you need to place it in a suitable size plastic pipe. Alternatively, you can take a chain canopy with a small caliber. It is worth noting that in order to install a frame garden swing, you should choose the right place on the site, avoiding trees and various kinds of fences.

Correct choice of support

A swing support is not just a structural element, but its main component. The safety of being on a swing and the permissible amount of swing will depend on its strength. Most often, the material that is used to make the support is wooden beams, metal pipes and corners. For a summer residence, a support in the shape of the letter A is often enough. For this, a frame is built from two supporting elements. Between themselves, they are connected by a transverse beam, which is installed horizontally. Its placement occurs at the level of one third of the column above ground level.

The crossbar itself, on which the seat is then hung, must be mounted to the uprights, which are vertical. Use screws for fastening.

Important: metal swings must be fixed in the soil. Because in the process of rocking the "leg" of the pipes loosens and twists out of the ground. To prevent this, support frames are created. Alternatively, concreting into a trench can be done.

But for a more durable fixing of the wooden structure, you need to bury the "legs" of the garden swing to a considerable depth (at least one meter). It can also be filled with concrete. But before concreting, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work. Bituminous mastic is applied to the support so that the “legs” are well saturated. This will protect the wood from decay processes. A brick is laid at the bottom of the pit.

Do-it-yourself construction of a garden swing made of metal

Metal is a durable material and heavy enough to make the entire structure of the garden swing strong and stable. This choice is ideal for building a swing that teenagers and adults will ride on. Also, the metal base will be more wear-resistant to heavy loads.

Metal garden swing

Be sure to use the drawing so that the entire installation is done correctly. Therefore, further step-by-step instructions are presented so that you can build a garden swing with your own hands from metal (drawings and dimensions, photos will be indicated below) in your country house. Of course, the options are selected individually. And in the photo we show only one of the possible.

Drawing of a metal garden swing

The construction of this installation begins with the preparation of materials:

  1. pipes cut in accordance with the required dimensions;
  2. burrs and sharp protrusions should be removed with sandpaper.
  1. Form a base. To do this, the supporting elements must be fastened at an angle of 45 degrees. Then install the crossbar. It should be strictly perpendicular to the uprights themselves. At this stage, you should use a welding machine to connect all the elements as firmly as possible.
  2. It is necessary to make recesses to secure the support. Pour sand to the bottom, which must be well compacted. Then install the support and pour concrete over it. The entire structure is left for at least a week so that the solution dries well and sets.
  3. As soon as the filling dries, you can proceed to fixing the seat. Before installing it, you need to weld special hooks using a welding machine. The seat itself is hung on ropes (high strength) or on metal beams.
  4. The final step is to paint all the elements of the garden swing. This measure is necessary not only to give the structure an attractive appearance. By painting it, you will protect your creations from rust and corrosion. It is also possible to decorate according to your taste and imagination.

Finished metal garden swing

If you feel that this option is beyond your power, then you can stop at a simpler copy of it. In this case, you need to stock up on a regular metal profile (diameter 50 mm).

Drawing a simple model of a metal swing

On the drain (transversely), attach special metal brackets. To do this, use bearings and a welding machine.
Install the seat on suspensions and attach to the structure itself. Most often, metal rods or chains can be found as suspensions.

A simple version of a metal swing

The creation of exclusive models looks original and attracts the attention of others. It can be forged products or a swing made from channels, or rather from their scraps. The swing benches made by yourself look interesting.

Wrought iron garden swing

Wooden swing

They are especially popular. After all, wood has always been popular as a building material. Building a garden swing with your own hands from wood is as easy as from metal. Drawings and dimensions, photos from the Internet to help you. It is only necessary to use suitable projects, then you will get the perfect result, and the photo of the homework is proof of this.

DIY wooden garden swing

Such structures have their advantages:

  1. naturalness and environmental friendliness;
  2. presentable and original appearance;
  3. strength (in case of impregnation with specialized solutions and substances).

Drawing of a garden swing made of wood

The most suitable tree species are birch, spruce or pine. For construction you will need:

  • wooden pole - 2 pcs.;
  • cross bar;
  • rope - about six meters;
  • hooks or suitable hangers;
  • elements for fastening the structure (the ideal option is to use bolts).

If you have a wooden beam, then building a swing on four poles would be a great option. But this design requires some attention and effort.

  1. Initially, you need to make a support. Two parts of the bars need to be assembled in the shape of the letter A, as shown in the photo.
  2. After that, you need to fix the crossbar.
  3. In order for the installation to be as strong and reliable as possible, you need to use short bars.
  4. From the same bars you need or a seat. And don't forget the backrest for maximum comfort.

Beautiful garden swing

Construction of a children's garden swing

The process of building a swing for children is similar to the construction of an adult version. We need a detailed design diagram, drawing the dimensions and locations of the elements for fastening. When using blueprints for adults, be sure to optimize it for children.

  1. Racks need to be made. They must be the same size.
  2. The racks are installed at a distance that directly depends on the width of the future seat.
  3. Connect both supports with a crossbar.
  4. Particular attention should be paid to the reliability of connections. To do this, you need to measure as accurately as possible the angle at which the elements of the racks, which are located vertically, will be connected.
  5. You also need to ensure that the crossbar itself is equally removed from ground level.
  6. Before installation, you need to dig a trench. It creates a special pillow of gravel. That's where the supports are placed. After installation, everything is poured with concrete mortar.
  7. There is a grinding of the entire structure, it is also necessary to round the corners. This is necessary in order to make the swing safe for children.

Children's swing

Your dacha will sparkle with new colors when such a swing made on its own appears in the yard. It is not only useful, but also incredibly beautiful.

Fixing system

There are various mounting systems for garden swings, namely:

  • carabiner - made from the following types: with a rectangular section (intended for beams) and with a circular section (for bars);
  • anchor - the type of fastening passes through;
  • staples and hooks - designed for children's models;
  • clamps - needed for fixing in case of hanging the swing on cables.

Therefore, carefully study the features of each system. After all, the right choice of fasteners allows you to make the swing not only durable, but also reliable.

Rope swing

The most classic models are rope and log swings. This option is considered the easiest to manufacture. To implement such an idea, it will be enough for you to make four holes. Use a wide log as a base. A rope must be passed through the holes made.

Rope garden swing

Using the same ropes, you need to put on a board for the seat. But you need to be careful. This option is not entirely sustainable. To prevent the seat from flipping over, make four holes on the side and thread the ropes through them.

The ends of the rope must be tightened well and tied with strong knots. And the swing is ready to use.

Today, DIY garden swings make a chic and unforgettable impression. It just takes a little patience and attention. What will the swing be like? Frame made of metal or mobile made of wood? It's up to you, but the swing must be fun. And all the most interesting about the independent construction of a garden swing, see the video below.
