Unfortunately, no one is immune from the depressurization of the pipeline in the apartment, therefore, in an emergency, it will be necessary to detect the area with damage as soon as possible and the ability to independently eliminate the defect. During emergency work, a hand-made pipe clamp will be indispensable. Products will help, if not completely get rid of, then at least weaken the resulting leakage.

Clamps for fastening pipes, do I need to do it myself?

Of course, on sale the clamp is presented in assortment. Factory made clamps are either stainless steel or flame retardant polymer. They are used both for connecting different parts of pipes, and for fixing entire products in various positions. It is impossible to do without them when arranging heating systems, sewerage, as well as in laying gas and water supply.

It's nice to have a pipe clamp on hand, professionally made at the factory, but if they are not there, or the size does not match, then it will be useful to learn how to design the simplest clamps with your own hands from improvised materials. Manufacturing will not take much time and effort, but at the right time they will help out a lot.

Any clamp consists of a steel bandage designed to compress the pipe and a rubber seal that closes the damage, ensuring the tightness of the area. The seal is usually made of corrugated rubber. In addition to the actual sealing, it serves to dampen vibration and noise in the pipe, and also protects the pipe section from deformation during compression by screws for fasteners.

The procedure for making a homemade pipe clamp

For work you will need:

  • A strip of galvanized steel or iron, not more than a millimeter thick
  • Rubber flap 3mm
  • Bolts M6, M8 or M10 - to choose from, which are found. Enough 2-3 pieces.

In addition to materials, you will need tools:

  • scissors for metal (jigsaw, grinder)
  • hammer
  • spanners
  • calipers
  • pliers/vice and
  • drill, drills (M7, M9, or M10, M12)

The first thing to do is to measure the diameter of the pipe with a caliper. But if the pipe is large in diameter, then it will be more convenient to measure with a ruler with a corner.

Then you need to cut a metal strip with a width of 4 to 8 cm. The selected width depends on the thickness of the pipe and the size of the damage. Here you will have to tinker a little with the length of the strip, calculating it according to the rules: the diameter of the pipe obtained during the measurement is multiplied by the Pi number - 3.14, then 3-4 cm are added to it, after which the piece can be cut off. This margin of centimeters (“ears”) is needed so that the bandage can be fastened in this place with the help of bolts and nuts.

You will need to drill two holes in the “ears” for the bolts, given the size of the latter, however, the holes may be slightly larger to make them easier to screw. If the pipe has a large width, then it is better if there are not two holes, but three. Then the ears are bent at a right angle with the help of pliers, you can just use your hands if the tin is thin.

The next step is trying on - bending the tin strip around the pipe. And the finished “ears” are brought together until their opposite holes coincide. If the strip does not fit snugly, then tap it lightly with a hammer. When the clamp takes the desired shape, it is lifted and a rubber gasket cut out in advance is inserted under it.

The rubber gasket should be in place of the damage, completely covering it. Then the bandage is taken, its “ears” are moved apart widely to the sides, and it is carefully put on the pipe over the rubber. If everything was calculated correctly, then in a loose form between the ears there should be a distance of about 3 cm. Then bolts are inserted into the holes on the ears and they are gradually, almost simultaneously, tightened with nuts to failure.

A leak that occurs in a heating or water supply system is quickly eliminated with the help of such a homemade clamp. In the process of its manufacture, the water, of course, should be turned off, but during the installation itself, the water supply must be present - this will allow you to immediately, on the spot, evaluate the effectiveness of the repair being carried out. After completing the work, it is necessary to carefully wipe the place of the former leak and wait a few minutes to make sure that it has been completely eliminated. And strongly protruding bolts can be shortened with a grinder.

A well-made and properly seated clamp can serve for more than one year. But if the pipes are too old, then they can break through in other places. Therefore, if possible, they should be replaced with new ones or at least solder problem areas by welding. It is clear that if the pressure in the pipes is high, then welding will hold more reliably than any clamp.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to the usual ones, there is a mortise clamp. They are used when connecting the house to the central water supply. Such clamps are installed by any locksmith using a milling machine and wrenches. But this type of work should only be carried out by a person with a special education, so it is done by employees who service the local water supply system.

Various breaks in pipes have been repaired with clamps for a very long time. The technology of such work is tested, simple and reliable. To do this, you will need the following materials:

  • a piece of tin;
  • a piece of rubber;
  • bolts;
  • nuts;
  • washers.

The clamp consists of a metal crimp - a bandage, as well as an internal rubber seal - a cuff. Absolutely any tin will do, but better try to pick up galvanized. Such a bandage will be more resistant to corrosion. The thickness should not be less than 0.5 mm. The cuff can be cut from an old boot, a piece of an automobile or bicycle inner tube, or a thick mitten. Any rubber will do. The number of bolts depends on the clamp width. If narrow, then one is enough. For a wide one, you will need 2 or 3. Diameter from 6 to 10 mm. Nuts and washers are selected according to them.

First prepare your tools:

  1. Hammer.
  2. Pliers. A vice will do too.
  3. Calipers. Can be replaced with a piece of some kind of lace.

Should be taken into account! If the clamp being made is small (no more than 6 cm), then the “ears” can be with one hole in the center for the mounting bolt. If it is larger, then it is preferable to make them more than 2-3.

Installation

After the product is almost ready, you can proceed to its installation, which will be the completion of the work.

  • A metal plate with moderate pressure bends around a pipe having a diameter similar to that which has integrity damage. Ultimately, the ears should match.
  • Attention! If the bend is uneven, then problems may arise with the installation of the mounting bolt.
  • A pre-prepared piece of rubber is applied to the leak site, after which a steel plate is installed on top of it. Before proceeding with the installation of a metal element, it needs to be slightly straightened. This is done in order to simplify the installation process on the pipe.
  • And so, if everything was done correctly, then between the "ears" there will be a distance of a couple of centimeters, and they can be pulled together with a bolt. When sufficient product pressure is reached on the pipe, the flow will stop.

Description of how to make a clamp yourself out of wire

Spring, as usual, came when no one expected it. And our whole street began to sink.

That's why I bought a motor pump. And to the motor pump - a bundle of hoses, both suction and exhaust.

In the process of collecting all this into a single whole, I discovered that, since I selected worm clamps for suction hoses, they did not fit for exhaust hoses, because the latter have a wall thickness, and, as a result, the outer diameter of the pipe is noticeably smaller. But I foresaw something similar, and just in case I bought a coil of galvanized knitting wire with a diameter of 2mm.

As it turned out, it is not an easy task to securely fix a hose into which water is supplied under a pressure of 500 liters per minute with a wire. After tormenting with a screwdriver and pliers, it turns out something like this:


It holds about the same as it looks - i.e. Badly. Once the sleeve was torn off and I was doused with water. Well, there were no injuries. After re-bandaging, it still held badly, despite all my efforts. Well, it flowed, of course, through all the cracks.

I remembered that last year I saw an excellent video of Advocate Yegorov, well-known in the circles of craftsmen, about a device he made homemade called a "clamp".

Lawyer Egorov is wonderful, and at first I even thought of repeating his whole device. But laziness was a problem, and I began to look for simpler options for the same device. And in the end, having gone through several options, I settled on the one that I liked the most - the version of Alexander Dorovikov.

I immediately went and bought a hexagon for 12 and an open-end wrench with a ratchet, also for 12.


From the flat key, as you can see, the horn part was sawn off, the tip was slightly pointed, and a groove was sawn at its end to fix it on the wire.


At both ends of the hexagon, longitudinal cuts were made where the wire should be inserted:


In addition, on the advice of Alexander, I marked the direction of free rotation of the ratchet part with a permanent marker:


After these simple steps, we try to knit a collar.
To begin with, we bend a piece of wire of sufficient length in half, and squeeze the bend slightly with the handles of the wire cutters, because it is no longer very convenient to bend a 2-mm wire at such a radius with your hands.

Then we throw on the first turn of the clamp, threading the free ends through the loop:

And we make one more turn, again threading the ends into the loop:


We fasten our device with a sawn groove on the loop:


And we insert a hexagon into the ratchet hole, simultaneously capturing the free ends of the wire with a cut. And twist it a little to create at least a little tension.


After that, we begin to twist, simultaneously correcting the wire around the entire perimeter, making sure that the turns do not overlap. You don't have to go crazy. When there is already a feeling that everything has dragged on enough, we bend our device through the loop like this:


After that, it remains only to bite the "antennae" and bend them so as not to cling and not scratch anything.


Well, now - we dance with joy, the connection is ready. If I explained something incomprehensibly - go to Alexander's video, to which I gave the link above, everything is explained there in much more detail.

What we have as a result: a piece of iron is simple, relatively inexpensive, and the benefits are a wagon. Under the hood, of course, you won’t use it because of its rather large dimensions - but for a wire of a smaller diameter, you can easily make a smaller pepyak.

Why is it needed? - asks the caustic reader. - After all, there are inexpensive worm clamps!

No, dear reader, they do not always exist and do not always fit the situation.

First, good worm-drive clamps are rare. And - not cheap.
Secondly, often there are no clamps at all in the required diameter, not to mention good ones.
Thirdly - the wire tie, according to my feelings, fixes much stronger, and above all - due to the fact that it tightens with a uniform force around the entire circumference.
Fourthly, it is possible to strengthen an existing connection with a wire without disconnecting it. It won’t work with a worm clamp (P.S. I was already convinced in the comments that it will actually work, I checked it - it really works, but not with all clamps). Therefore, it can be used not only for pipes and hoses, but also, for example, for assembling structures from poles, for the prompt repair of split handles of axes, screwdrivers, chisels and much more.

And fifthly, no one bothers a real paranoid person to have both in stock. There is a collar - you put it. There is no clamp - you wind the wire.

The tool cost me more than I expected - because I did not have time to the car market before it closed, and I bought the keys in the "1000 little things" section, where the twists for all this nonsense are quite large. A ratchet wrench cost me 260 rubles, and a hexagon wrench - 220. But 500 rubles for the resulting stray is not a pity. It's nice to hold in your hands a tool that you partially made yourself.

Materials for manufacturing

For the manufacture of the device we need
  • steel strip 200 mm long, 25-30 mm wide, and 2.5 mm thick;
  • steel bar 10 mm thick;
  • pieces of sheet iron 6-10 mm thick;
  • any handle material of your choice.

Manufacturing process

We make the clamp base of such dimensions 200 mm x 30 mm x 2.5 mm by cutting out a steel strip or a piece of sheet iron, as shown in the photo below. We will also need two pieces of iron measuring 40 mm x 30 mm x 8 mm, which we will weld to the base for thickening. The collar can be made from a steel bar 10 mm thick by welding it in a T-shape, or made from an automobile stabilizer strut with a rod thickness of 10 mm.



Now we weld pieces of metal to the base and drill with a 10 mm drill.





For the convenience of using the tool, we make a handle from wood or another material that you like best (plastic, textolite, plexiglass).


In the stock, we make a cut with a width of 2.5 mm with a grinder, under the diameter of the wire we are going to use.




Now our clamp is ready for use, and its length after final processing turned out to be 180 mm.




We make the clamp itself from steel wire 2-2.5 mm thick, bending it as shown in the photo.
Next, we insert the wire into the slot of the collar on both sides and by scrolling the collar we tighten the clamp, after which we bend the handle of the clamp away from ourselves, thus fixing the clamp.




We bite off the excess wire, and bend the ends with a hammer.



Thanks to such a tricky device, you can make clamps of any diameter. Of course, such clamps are one-time use, but they come out strong and durable, and their cost is really a penny, even if you have to buy several meters of the necessary wire.
