Using tape to insulate windows. What is a vapor barrier tape for a window and why is it used during installation Waterproofing tape for fiberglass windows

September 17, 2016
Specialization: a professional in the field of construction and repair (a full cycle of finishing work, both internal and external, from sewerage to electrics and finishing work), installation of window structures. Hobbies: see column "SPECIALIZATION AND SKILLS"

Waterproofing tape for PVC windows, as well as other materials for installation, are used relatively rarely: their use increases the cost of work, since a set of high-quality mounting tapes for installing one design costs about 15 - 25% of the cost of the entire window.

And yet, if you plan to glaze the house "for yourself", using modern materials is not only possible, but also necessary. That is why I decided to write a short review on mounting tapes, their purpose and proper use.

Purpose of mounting tapes

If approached from a formal point of view, then the use of special vapor-permeable and vapor barrier materials for the installation of PVC structures is necessary, first of all, according to the requirements of industry standards. The use of tapes is regulated by the following documents:

  • GOST R 53338-2009 "Vapour-permeable self-expanding self-adhesive construction tapes";
  • GOST 30971-2012 “Mounting seams of adjoining window blocks to wall openings. General technical conditions”;
  • GOST R 52749-2007 "Mounting window seams with vapor-permeable self-expanding tapes".

That is, the installation of windows in accordance with GOST without the use of tapes is impossible in principle. But there are also rational explanations for the need to use such materials. Some of them are set out in the already mentioned GOSTs, and some can be formulated based on many years of experience in the installation, repair and operation of translucent structures:

  1. To seal the joint between the window and the window opening, a self-expanding mounting foam based on liquid polyurethane is used. Despite the presence of a number of objective advantages, the foam also has disadvantages - first of all, it is vulnerability to ultraviolet radiation.
  2. To protect the foam from UV radiation, a self-adhesive tape is used that covers the assembly seam from the outside.

  1. The next aspect that justifies the need to use special tapes for mounting is ventilation, or rather, the removal of liquid. When operating a window without additional protection, which is formed in the room, it is partially collected inside the installation seam, reducing the efficiency of heat saving. To avoid this, a vapor barrier material can be used to seal it from the inside of the room.
  2. However, it is important not only to protect the foam from moisture ingress, but also to ensure the unhindered exit of water vapor outside the assembly seam. To do this, only a vapor-permeable tape is used for exterior decoration, which guarantees normal diffusion of moist air. .

The question of whether it is necessary to glue a vapor barrier tape or use a vapor-permeable material is largely debatable. On the one hand, the effectiveness of these materials is really quite high, so using them in the installation will clearly affect the functionality of the window in the best possible way.

On the other hand, the price of mounting tapes is also rather big, therefore, to save money, you can choose other methods: from the inside, for example, install a slope made of plastic (in principle, it provides good hydro and vapor barrier), and from the outside - finish the mounting seam with vapor-permeable plaster, followed by painting .

And yet I repeat: the use of special tapes when installing a window structure in an opening is fully justified both in terms of standards and in terms of optimizing the indoor climate.

Varieties of materials

Type 1. Hydro vapor barrier tape

For the installation of PVC windows, a variety of tapes are used. Each type of such material has its own characteristics and advantages, therefore, in order to achieve the maximum effect, materials should be combined, combining their functional advantages in the best possible way.

I’ll start my review of the materials used when installing windows, with the most popular - with a vapor barrier tape:

  1. Self-adhesive hydro-vapor barrier mounting tape (HPL) is a tape material that covers the mounting gap from the side of the room.
  2. The basis of the tape is polyethylene or foam polyethylene film. On one side, the plank is laminated with a thin layer of aluminum foil, and on the other side, one or two strips of adhesive are applied for installation.
  3. The adhesive mixture used for application provides good adhesion to most materials - wood, concrete, brick, etc. Problems can arise when trying to paste over an opening made of gas or foam concrete, therefore, before buying mounting material, I recommend consulting with the seller or carefully studying what the manufacturer's instructions say about this .
  4. The structure of the tape provides almost complete tightness of the finished assembly seam: neither the place of gluing nor the polyethylene strip itself allows air and water vapor to pass through.

  1. The polymer structure provides the product with additional advantages: the finishing material is not afraid of not only moisture, but also the effects of acids, alkalis, and other chemically active substances, and also does not degrade under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Type 2. Insulated waterproofing tape

The insulated tape is, in fact, a modification of the usual waterproofing material. Its key features include:

  • increased thickness of the base, which is made exclusively from polyethylene foam;
  • a denser foil layer based on a durable polypropylene film.

Thanks to these design features:

  1. The product is no worse than preventing the diffusion of liquid and water vapor and the penetration of moisture into the middle part of the assembly seam. This ensures the most effective hydro and vapor barrier.
  2. The increased thickness of the base and its porous structure help to reduce heat loss. Foamed polyethylene acts as a window insulation.
  3. Finally, the foil coating also plays an important role. A thin layer of metal on an elastic base reflects infrared radiation, acting as a "thermal mirror". At the same time, most of the heat generated by heating devices is returned to the room.

The disadvantages of such products, I would include their rather large dimensions: finishing the mounting gap with insulated tapes requires subsequent masking of the junction using slopes, which is not always included in our plans.

Type 3. Pre-Compressed Tape (PSUL)

Another versatile material is PSUL (pre-compressed sealing tape). This material is used to ensure self-ventilation of the assembly seam:

  1. The tape is a strip of porous polyurethane foam impregnated with a special compound. On the one hand, the strip is equipped with an adhesive layer protected by a special protective coating.
  2. The product is supplied in a rolled form (rolls or bobbins). It is necessary to unwind the material immediately before installation, since over time the product loses its properties.
  3. During installation, the protective coating is removed and PSUL is glued to the window structure. After that, the impregnation reacts with air, due to which the linear dimensions of the product increase. The tape expands and completely covers the mounting gap.

Full and high-quality overlap is possible only if the nominal size of the product specified by the manufacturer corresponds to the dimensions of the gap. So, for example, if I need to close a 35 mm gap with my own hands, then for work I take a PSUL with a width of about 40 mm.

  1. After expansion, the material becomes completely vapor-permeable. Due to this, an unhindered exit of water from the assembly seam is ensured.

Type 4. Internal tapes

In addition to these varieties, other products are also used for interior decoration of slopes. Their main features are conveniently analyzed according to the table, which I will give below:

Marking Description
sun A product that you use for the installation of window structures, if you plan to finish the slopes in a dry way (drywall, plastic, lining, etc.).

Provides effective vapor barrier, prevents moisture from entering the thickness of the assembly seam.

The tape is mounted using a self-adhesive layer with a protective coating.

BC+ It is used for the same purposes as the BC tape, but at the same time it has a greater thickness.

An additional advantage is the presence of a foil layer, which provides more effective vapor and heat insulation.

VM Hydro and vapor barrier material, which is used if it is planned to plaster the slopes on the inside of the window opening.

We protect the mounting foam from moisture ingress, while ensuring maximum adhesion to the plaster mass.

VM+ A more efficient version of the previous product, used for the same purposes. The key feature is increased moisture resistance.

Other types of mounting tapes

In addition to the products described above, other types of tapes are used for the installation of translucent structures:

  1. Diffusion tape for outdoor decoration. It is used in combination with PSUL or with polyurethane foam. Provides protection of the assembly seam from moisture and ultraviolet radiation while maintaining vapor permeability. Finishing the junction with diffuse material allows you to maintain the natural level of ventilation: air will freely escape from the middle part of the mounting gap.

  1. Butyl rubber mounting tape under the window sill. As the name suggests, it is used to seal the junction under the window sill and protect the insulation from blowing, moisture and heat loss. Like other materials from this category, installation is carried out using a self-adhesive layer.
  2. Non-woven material for installation under the tide. It has high rates of vapor permeability, it is glued to the foundation of the opening under the drainage strip. In addition to providing ventilation, it significantly reduces the noise of galvanized metal ebbs, acting as a shock absorber and extinguishing some of the loud sounds.
  3. Adhesive tape is a versatile material that is used for mounting lightweight structures. For example, self-adhesive reflective film is popular, and a mosquito net with a fastening tape is also very convenient to use.

How to use correctly?

The technology of using installation years when installing PVC profile windows is quite simple. I am using the following algorithm:

  1. First, I prepare the opening: I remove the old structure, level the walls, remove dust and dry all surfaces. It is desirable that the edges of the opening be more or less even, therefore, before installing the window, it may be necessary to refine them using a rapidly hardening mortar.
  2. Then I perform cutting of hydro-vapor barrier tapes, PSUL and diffuse material. I cut the products along the length of each side of the window with an overlap of at least 10 cm (these sections are used to form the corner joint).

  1. I stick the tapes on the window frame, removing the protective film from one of the adhesive strips. On the front surface of the structure, I glue PSUL in a compressed state from the outside.

It is desirable that the PSUL is completely hidden behind the wall railing, therefore, before gluing, I usually try on the window to the opening, making marks at the installation site.

  1. I install the structure in the opening and fix it in the chosen way - either with the help of anchors or with the help of mounting plates.

  1. All gaps are filled with mounting foam made of self-expanding polyurethane.
  2. I remove the protective strips from the inner and outer tape and glue their edges to the opening, completely covering the foam.
  3. If the installation is carried out in winter, I use specialized materials with glue that retains adhesiveness at low temperatures.

  1. Before installing additional elements, I separately glue a material to the support profile or the lower part of the frame that protects the space under the window sill and under the drainage strip.
  2. Under the ebb itself, I glue a PSUL strip on a horizontal surface: it acts as a shock absorber, and therefore the metal visor will not rattle when the wind gusts and drops of rain fall on it.

Cost of materials

As I noted at the very beginning, the high price of mounting tapes partially limits their distribution. But at the same time, if you know exactly what you need, there is a chance to meet the budget allotted for glazing.

Conclusion

Both vapor permeable and vapor barrier tape for plastic windows may not be included in the required set of parts for successful installation. But their use allows you to fully comply with the requirements of GOST. And also to ensure the formation of a favorable microclimate in the room - primarily due to the normalization of the assembly seam.

The video in this article will help you master the technology of using such details, and when choosing a product, you can consult with me and other experts by asking questions in the comments.

Salute, readers!

I love thematic forums, where everyone has their own opinion and teaches others.

What battles sometimes flare up there!

So this time, at one of these forums, I managed to witness disputes about the need to use vapor barrier tape.

One member of the forum, foaming at the mouth, argued that it was not needed and this was a good publicity stunt for one of the Western companies, the other explained why it was bad without it.

If you do not yet know what a vapor barrier tape is, then this topic is just for you.

Welcome!

Vapor barrier tapes for windows, as well as good finishing of slopes and installation seams, will provide decent window performance. In order for the window in your house to function well and for a long time, you should not miss such a moment as installing a vapor barrier tape.

The hermetic tapes used to isolate the installation seam from the vapors and moisture of the adjoining premises prevent condensate from escaping onto the slopes.

If you have a kitchen, a room with a pool or a sauna, then installing a vapor barrier tape on the windows is a must for you.

Varieties of vapor barrier tape

Tapes can be either with one or two adhesive strips. Two adhesive strips are designed to fasten the tape with one side to the window and the other to the wall.

Also, vapor barrier tapes are classified according to weather periods:

  • for the summer period with air temperature from + 5°С to + 35°С;
  • for the winter period with temperatures below 0°С.

The width of the tape also varies depending on the needs, which makes it possible to provide a reliable vapor barrier for joints of various sizes. When choosing vapor barrier tapes, keep in mind that its width should be about 45 mm more than the width of the mounting seam.

Tapes for outdoor use consist of foamed materials (for this work, well-sealed materials with plaster mortar are needed, which will provide the required vapor barrier of the outer layer).

The vapor barrier tape can be butyl rubber, for tightness of interpanel joints or for installing door or window blocks.

This tape contains a non-woven fabric. During installation, it is primed, plastered and painted. This type is also self-adhesive.

To protect the installation seam from high humidity for dry finishing of slopes, there are metallized vapor barrier tapes on the market.

General information on installing vapor barrier tape

  • Initially, you need to prepare your opening: clean the inner and outer surfaces of the opening and frame from dirt, dust and other debris. The frame is inserted into the opening and is not temporarily fixed.
  • After gently mark the line on the frame for attaching the vapor barrier tape.
  • After carrying out the calculations and marking with the window, we remove the frame and glue our internal vapor barrier tapes. We do not remove the paper strip that protects the inner adhesive layer, which later attaches to the walls.

As a rule, the installation of a vapor barrier tape on the structure is carried out before the joint is foamed.

Useful advice!

Therefore, before finishing, moistening and filling with foam, you can remove the protective paper strips from the vapor barrier tapes.

This will allow you not to lose the adhesive properties of the tape. If you are conducting hidden installation, then the tape should be attached to the ends of the structure from above and on the sides, and from below to the installation profile.

  • External heat-insulating tapes can be glued no earlier than the complete polymerization of the mounting foam.
  • Installation of vapor barrier tape under the window sill can be done last. When installing a vapor barrier tape under the plaster layer, the tape must have an outer coating, which will provide the necessary adhesion to this plaster layer.

In the event that the window quarter has gaps between the frame and the wall, a different technique is used: an uneven joint can be closed with a window flashing, and a vapor barrier tape can already be glued on it.

Installing a vapor barrier tape on windows is installed in a continuous layer along the entire contour of the opening.

Do not forget that the use of finishing building materials in combination with a vapor barrier tape is allowed only if the moisture-permeable characteristics are observed.

For internal sealing of the assembly seam, the following is used:

a) vapor barrier tape (duplicated) based on aluminum foil laminated with non-woven fabric, allows you to protect the mounting seam from the inside from moisture and prevents it from escaping from the seam to the surface of internal slopes.

For easy and secure fixing, the tape has two adhesive strips of glue and butyl, located on two different sides. It is recommended to apply along the entire perimeter of the window for the subsequent finishing of slopes in a dry way.

b) vapor-tight doubled sealing tape is made of a non-woven fabric coated with a self-adhesive plastoelastic mass based on high-tack butyl rubber.

A feature of butyl rubber tapes is their rather large weight. And, if we compare butyl rubber and reinforced foil tapes with the same width of 120 mm, it turns out that reinforced foil tape is almost 5 times lighter than butyl rubber tape.

The low weight of the tapes makes them easier to work with during installation, and also significantly reduces transportation costs when transporting tapes over long distances.

However, tapes based on reinforced foil with adhesive strips have adhesion only to a well-cleaned and degreased surface of the inner slope, while butyl rubber tapes have a tighter abutment and better adhesion to the wall opening.

To install the internal vapor barrier sealing tape, proceed as follows:

  1. Cut the tape into pieces with a length equal to the width and length of the window +10 cm (to form corner joints). Docking of tapes along the length is allowed "overlapping", not less than ½ of the tape width.
  2. Remove the protective paper from the vapor barrier tape from the side of the duplicated strip and glue it to the frame profile from the outside.
  3. The tape is fastened by means of a self-adhesive duplicated mounting strip in a taut state (tightly, without folds or swelling) to the outer surface of the box from the inside vertically and horizontally to the ceiling. The inner edge of the adhesive layer must match the inner edge of the frame. The tape protecting the butyl rubber layer is not removed at this stage of installation.

The adhesive strip has a sufficiently high resistance to low temperatures without loss of adhesive properties.

Lack of adhesion can occur if the acrylic adhesive strip is kept in the cold for a long time with the release paper removed.

Also, the adhesion of the adhesive strip decreases when working with cold window blocks, since when the worker breathes, steam (moisture) is released, which partially condenses on the surface of the cold window block, which also reduces the adhesion of adhesive strips.

To prevent this defect, it is recommended to keep the adhesive layers with the release paper removed for the minimum possible time, and also to wipe the surface of the window unit with a dry rag or paper towel immediately before gluing tapes to it.

Question: How to apply vapor barrier tape for pvc windows correctly and at what temperature?

Answer: The installation of vapor barrier tapes on plastic windows is carried out as usual in those rooms where there is high humidity - a kitchen, a bathhouse, a swimming pool.

The tape allows you to protect the installation seam from moisture and steam emanating from the room and thus do not allow condensate to escape to the window slopes. Vapor barrier tapes are produced with one and two adhesive strips.

Tape with two adhesive strips is very convenient to attach to the window and to the slope. Vapor barrier tapes are divided into summer and winter, depending on the weather conditions in the room.

Summer tapes can be used at air temperatures from +5 to +35C, and winter ones at air temperatures below 0 degrees. The window tape should be chosen so wide that it is 45 millimeters wider than the width of the mounting joint. This will allow you to provide a reliable vapor barrier for the installation seams of your windows.

The very technology of installing windows and applying vapor barrier tape is as follows. We clean the opening from dirt and dust, install the window frame and, without fixing it, mark on the walls of the opening and on the window frame the fastening lines of the vapor barrier tape.

We remove the frame from the opening and glue the vapor barrier tape on it, do not remove the protective strip on the part that will be glued to the wall!

Useful advice!

We install the vapor barrier tape on a PVC window with one piece of tape, without breaks!

Now you can assemble the window with sashes and install it thoroughly in its place. We install the vapor barrier tape on the window sill as a last resort.

Any window needs additional sealing. This is especially important if street noise has increased, a draft has appeared, and heat is lost in winter. Warming is best done in warm weather. Many methods are used for this, up to window replacement. Fortunately, there are building materials that successfully solve this problem. Such material is considered a tape for insulation.

About warming

The microclimate of the room depends on the windows. Because of the uninsulated windows, the glass fogs up, cracks and fungus appear on the slopes, there is a constant draft and street noise. In order to effectively insulate windows, it is necessary to determine the causes of low thermal insulation.

Most often they are the following:

  1. Wooden windows

First of all, insulation is required for old window structures for the following reasons:

  • Previously, glass was attached to the frame with a special putty. Over time, it dries out and crumbles;
  • the frames dry out, so cracks and gaps appear between the glazing bead and the glass;
  • the sashes are deformed and loosely held on the frame.
  1. Plastic windows

It is erroneously believed that such windows are quite tight, so they do not need insulation. Unfortunately, after a few years, the seal is destroyed, and insulation is indispensable.

There are other reasons why you need to deal with plastic windows:

  • violation of window installation technology;
  • skewed window structure due to shrinkage of the house;
  • factory defect of the window structure;
  • mechanical damage to structural elements.

Varieties of insulation tapes

The widespread use of tapes for window insulation is due to a number of reasons:

  • no annual replacement required
  • warming is carried out in a short time on their own;
  • when pasting there is no dirt, since no water is used;
  • there are no traces of adhesive on the frame;
  • no diffusion of the adhesive layer with the frame paint.

But this method of insulation also has disadvantages:

  • after gluing, you can not open the window sashes;
  • low-quality or poorly glued tape lags behind the frame in small sections.

Hardware stores offer two types of tapes, which differ in the way they are installed.

  1. pasting

Adhesive-backed foam tape

Tapes of this type have a wide grip. The adhesive composition is applied during manufacture (self-adhesive type) or during installation work.

To create a self-adhesive tape, polyvinyl chloride, rubber and polyethylene foam (foam rubber) are used.

Due to the plasticity of these materials, the tape is easily compressed to the size of the gap. So that the insulation does not stand out against the background of the window, dyes are added: black, brown, white.

Typically, the packaging indicates the size of the gap that the tape closes. Popular options with sizes 3 - 7 mm.

Foam tapes were the first to be used. Their popularity is due to a number of advantages:

  • high compression ratio;
  • the frame does not collapse in places of insulation;
  • low cost;
  • high protection efficiency.

Such tapes have negative qualities:

  • insufficient efficiency for large gaps;
  • short service life. Effectively operate during one winter season;
  • for cheap models, the adhesive tape is poorly fixed;
  • low water resistance.

Important!

It is more convenient to use self-adhesive tapes on foam rubber for insulation.

They stay longer on the window and adjust the degree of pressing of the sashes.

  1. Sealing

D - shaped tubular sealant with adhesive base

Tapes of this type have a hollow tubular shape, which is why heat is retained. The material used is rubber and polyvinyl chloride.

On one side of the tape is a grooved hook or adhesive coating with paper protection.

It is believed that the groove is more resistant to mechanical stress.

The following qualities are considered to be advantages:

  • gaps up to 0.7 cm are blocked;
  • any temperature fluctuations are maintained;
  • it is possible to choose the color to match the frame color;
  • the use of the window is not limited;
  • affordable cost.

But most of the disadvantages relate to adhesive tapes:

  • not suitable for all window designs;
  • when the temperature changes, the adhesive layer is destroyed;
  • with frequent deformations, delamination occurs in glued places;
  • The foam tape gets wet quickly and dust sticks to it. For this reason, frequent replacements are carried out.

Tubular seals are checked annually. If necessary, individual fragments are replaced.

As a rule, the tape is selected according to three indicators.

By material

Main advantages:

  • low cost;
  • high elasticity, allowing you to close gaps of different sizes.

There are also disadvantages:

  • due to the porous structure, moisture is quickly absorbed. The drying process takes a very long time;
  • low durability. With prolonged use, the material turns yellow and crumbles.

Unfortunately, such tapes are rarely used for window insulation, as they increase the cost of window construction by up to 15%.

  1. Rubber― it is used for production of two kinds of tapes: self-adhesive and sealing.

Groove Tubular Seals

Self-adhesive tapes are made on the basis of synthetic rubber and have all its positive qualities: elasticity and resistance to temperature fluctuations.

Rubber seals are not afraid of aggressive environments, so they last a very long time.

  1. Polyurethane foam (PPE)― porous material from the made foam polyethylene.

Due to the high elasticity, very effective tapes for small gaps. Good insulating qualities. Due to the presence of air in the structure, a heat-insulating environment is created.

Its use is limited by the ability to go into a liquid toxic state at high temperatures.

Manufacturers

In hardware stores there are tapes from different manufacturers.

However, only materials from the following brands are in demand:

  • Russia ― Profitrast, Ekon, Zubr.
  • Germany - KIMTEC, Deventer.
  • Poland - Sanok.

Domestic manufacturers, as a rule, work according to European technologies and produce quality material no worse than foreign samples. At the same time, although German and Polish tapes are more expensive, they last longer.

By cost

Insulating tapes are sold at retail and in coils from 6 to 10 meters.

Since a standard window requires about 5 meters of self-adhesive insulation, retail purchases are most often made.

The price range is very wide.

For a linear meter of Russian material, you need to pay up to 15 rubles, and the most expensive German rubber insulation will cost 50 rubles.

Features of preparing a window for insulation

Preparing a window for insulation with tape is almost the same as preparing for other heaters. At the same time, there are some peculiarities.

The main steps are:

  1. Everything is removed from the windowsill. Blinds are removed from the window.
  1. The frames are washed with soapy water and then dried. The tape requires a dry and grease-free surface.
  1. Glasses are carefully examined. Wooden windows have cracked glass. They must be replaced, as they are a source of heat loss.
  1. Grooves are prepared for the sealing tape. They should be free of old tape, dirt and paint.
  1. Before starting work, they are determined with places where cold air comes from from the street. They warm up first. Weak points are sashes, slopes, window sills.

Insulation with adhesive tape

The technology of insulation is not very complicated. First of all, it is necessary to observe the sequence of work.

  1. Plastic windows

Warming is carried out in the following sequence:

  • the previously removed old insulation is used, firstly, to purchase a similar material, and secondly, to pre-cut the old material to size.
  • gluing starts from the top of the window. As you move, the protective layer is removed in small sections, and the tape is pressed tightly.

More in our video:

Important!

1. The pasted tape should not have many gaps.

2. In the corners, the tape is not cut, but wrapped.

  1. Wooden windows

For these windows, in addition to adhesive tape, thin foam rubber is often used. Work is performed in the following sequence:

  • strips of foam rubber are cut along the window opening;
  • chopped foam rubber is placed between the frames;
  • the tape is cut to the size of the window;
  • with a sticky layer, the tape is applied to the foam rubber and smoothed with a napkin.

Such insulation will last up to three years. But it is better to do as shown in the video:

Insulation with sealing tape

  1. Plastic windows

Typically, plastic windows lose heat for two reasons:

  • equipment failure;
  • seal wear.

Proper installation of the tape increases the insulating ability of the window. The following sequence of work is recommended:

  • before installation, the tape is kept at a positive temperature, since it depends on its expansion inside the groove;
  • the tape is cut to fit the window. The joints are cut at right angles. For thermal expansion, a reserve is created: for each meter, 1 centimeter of material;
  • the tape is pressed with a spatula in the groove, and at the same time, the pasting strips are removed in small sections.

Important!

1. In the corners of the frame, the tape is butt-jointed only.

2. To prevent impregnation, the tape does not shrink more than the allowable value.

After mounting the sealing tape, the locking mechanism is adjusted: the clamp is changed by pins, which are located at the end of the sash.

Adjustment is made with a hex wrench. The pressure increases when the trunnion head is set in a horizontal position.

  1. Wooden windows

The Swedish method of warming such windows using the EuroStrip technology is in great demand. It has the following advantages:

  • there is no need for annual window insulation;
  • after ventilation, the tightness of the windows is not violated;
  • increases the service life of the frames;
  • high degree of protection against dust and street noise.

For insulation, two types of tapes are used: rubber and silicone.

By the way, branded Swedish silicone seals are easily inserted into the groove and last up to 20 years.

Installation is carried out in the following sequence:

  • the sashes are removed from the hinges and inspected. Decayed areas are identified, and then restored;

So, both types of window insulation tapes deserve attention. Which one is better depends on the state of the window.

If you choose the right one, then the insulation will quickly pay off, and the apartment will always be warm and comfortable.

Greetings!

Today we will touch on a controversial topic. Do I need a vapor barrier tape when installing PVC windows?

I think you will be interested to know what it is and why it is needed.

Vapor barrier tapes are designed to improve the performance of window structures. The effect of their installation is comparable to high-quality finishing of slopes or laying assembly joints. The installation of such tapes will help extend the functioning of the windows; in no case should you refuse to install it.
Sealed tapes provide insulation of the mounting seam from an excess of moisture and steam, they prevent the condensate from moving to the slopes of the window structure. Installation of such a tape is necessary if there is a kitchen, a bath or a room with a pool.

Varieties of vapor barrier tape

There are two main types of material: with one and two adhesive surfaces.

Tape with two adhesive surfaces one side attached to the wall and the other to the window.

There is a classification of tapes on a seasonal basis:

  • for summer, withstand temperatures - 5-35 degrees;
  • for winter, suitable for temperatures below 0.

The width of the tape depends on the design features of the profile, a wide range allows you to choose the option for seams of different sizes. When choosing a tape, it must be taken into account that its width should be approximately 45 mm greater than the width of the installation seam.

The composition of the tape for outdoor use includes foam materials, in this case, sealing compounds with plaster mortar are used, providing the necessary level of vapor barrier.

Vapor barrier tapes can be made from butyl rubber, they are used for sealing interpanel joints, as well as when installing windows and doors.
The composition of this tape includes a non-woven fabric, during installation it undergoes priming, plastering and painting, this type also belongs to the group of self-adhesive.

There are also metallized vapor barrier tapes on the market, they are designed to protect the mounting seam of slopes for dry finishing from moisture.

Information about the self-adhesive sealing waterproofing tape in the video:

General information on the installation of vapor barrier tape

The process can be divided into the following stages of work:

  • prepare the opening, clean it of dust, dirt and debris, insert the frame into the opening, temporarily not fixing it;
  • on the frame, carefully mark the line for mounting the tape;
  • make calculations, mark with a window, stick internal vapor barrier tapes on the removed frame (the protective paper strip covering the adhesive must remain in place, it should not be removed.)

In accordance with the rules, the installation of the vapor barrier tape is carried out before the seam is foamed.
Before finishing, moistening and filling with mounting foam, the protective paper strips must be removed.

This is necessary to maintain the adhesive properties of the tape. When flush mounting is carried out from below, the strip is attached to the installation profile, on the sides and top to the ends of the structure.

The following features must be taken into account:

  • external tapes are glued after complete polymerization of the mounting foam;
  • installation of a vapor barrier strip under the window sill is carried out at the final stage;
  • when installing a vapor barrier strip under a layer of plaster, special requirements are imposed on the outer coating of the tape, it must provide the necessary level of adhesion between the surfaces to be joined.

If there are gaps between the wall and the frame of the window quarter, a different technique is used: an uneven joint must be closed with a special window flashing, after which a vapor barrier tape is glued.
The vapor barrier tape is glued around the entire perimeter of the window opening in a continuous layer.
It should also be borne in mind that the use of finishing building materials in conjunction with a vapor barrier tape is recommended only if certain moisture permeability characteristics are observed.

Foil self-adhesive waterproofing tape

Self-adhesive strip GPL allows you to solve problems associated with steam, hydro and thermal insulation of joints, assembly seams, junctions and joints in a wide variety of building structures - door and window blocks, plastic, concrete and metal products.

The vapor barrier layer provides the necessary level of waterproofing, which prevents the formation of mold, fungi and spores, as a result, the life of any structure is increased.

Advantages:

  • significant reduction in heat loss;
  • significant reduction in energy consumption;
  • ease of installation, achieved due to the adhesive layer;
  • ensuring reliable fastening of the film on building materials of all types.

GPL - foil self-adhesive hydro-steam and heat-insulating tape(width 90,120,150,200 mm, supplied in boxes with dimensions 420x420x600 mm). The choice of width depends on the design features of the window profile.

Installation steps:

  • clean, dry and degrease the treated surfaces, unwind the roll, cut the tape into pieces of the required size;
  • after removing the protective film, stick the film on the surface, pressing firmly with your hands and without stretching, smooth with a roller, avoiding the formation of air bubbles.

Works should be carried out at a temperature not lower than +10°C.

Self-adhesive steam-, hydro-, heat-insulating tapes consist of foamed laminated polyethylene, on one side a layer of metallized polypropylene film is applied. On the other hand, a special waterproof adhesive ensures reliable fastening of the material on structures made of metal, brick, concrete, wood, plastic, etc.

Since the tape is based on polyethylene foam, which has excellent thermal insulation characteristics, the closed cell structure provides an extremely low level of hygroscopicity, which guarantees a high level of moisture resistance.

Polyethylene foam gives the film elasticity, which is very important when sealing joints with irregularities. Metallized polypropylene tape is designed to finish the outer layer.
The advantages of polypropylene film include a high level of mechanical strength, the material is also resistant to organic solvents, acids and alkalis. Thereby Reliable protection of the reflective layer from damage and oxidation is ensured.

Polypropylene film also has good vapor barrier properties.

The adhesive layer is a waterproof artificial rubber adhesive with increased adhesion to various materials, which allows the use of vapor barrier strips without surface preparation.
Siliconized film protects the adhesive layer from sticking in the roll.

T PVC window installation technology using vapor barrier tape in the video:

Installing the internal vapor barrier sealing tape

For internal sealing of the assembly seam, a vapor barrier (duplicated) strip is used.

A vapor barrier (duplicated) strip, made on the basis of aluminum foil laminated with a non-woven fabric, provides the necessary level of moisture insulation of the assembly seam, and is a reliable barrier to moisture escaping to the surface of internal slopes.

Two adhesive strips of butyl and glue located on different sides allow easy and reliable fixation. It is recommended to stick the tape around the entire perimeter of the window structure for finishing the slopes using the dry method. which will be carried out in the next step.

In the production of a vapor-tight doubled sealing strip, a non-woven fabric is used, covered with a self-adhesive plastoelastic mass made on the basis of sticky butyl rubber.
The main feature of butyl rubber strips is their heavy weight. When comparing butyl rubber tape and reinforced foil of the same width of 120 mm, it turns out that the reinforced foil is almost five times lighter.

The low weight of the foil greatly simplifies the installation process, which reduces transportation costs when transporting material over long distances.

Vapor barrier tapes with adhesive strips made on the basis of reinforced foil have high adhesive properties only if the surface of the inner slope is well cleaned and degreased. Butyl rubber strips are distinguished by better adhesion and a tighter abutment to the wall opening. All these characteristics must be taken into account when choosing one or another option, if necessary, you can always consult a specialist.

Installation steps for the internal vapor barrier sealing tape:

  • cut the material into parts, taking into account the length and width of the window structure (for corner joints), the joining of the strips along the length is overlapped, at least half of its width;
  • remove the protective paper from the duplicated strip, stick it on the outside of the frame;
  • the installation of the strip is carried out using a self-adhesive mounting strip in a taut state (without blisters and folds, maximum) to the outer surface of the window frame from the inside along the ceiling horizontally and vertically.

The inner edge of the adhesive surface and the inner edge of the frame must exactly match, the protective tape is not removed at this stage.

The adhesive strip is highly resistant to cold temperatures while maintaining adhesive properties.

Adhesion deterioration can be affected by prolonged cold exposure of the acrylic adhesive tape with the release paper removed.

Working with cold window structures can also have a negative effect on adhesion, since when workers breathe, steam is released from the mouth, partially condensing on the surface of the block, as a result, the adhesion of the adhesive surface is reduced.

In order to prevent this phenomenon, the interval between the removal of the release paper and the actual application of the tape should be as short as possible. Before sticking the tape, it is also necessary to wipe the surface of the window block with a paper towel or dry rag.

Proper application on PVC windows

Question: How to use a vapor barrier tape for PVC window structures correctly, what should be the temperature?
Answer: Installation of vapor barrier tapes on plastic window structures is carried out in the usual way in rooms with a high level of humidity (pool, sauna, kitchen).

The material provides protection of the installation seam from the penetration of steam and moisture emanating from the room, the tape thus prevents the condensate from escaping onto the window slopes. The vapor barrier strip may have one or two adhesive surfaces.
Tape with two adhesive surfaces is conveniently attached to the slopes and the window. All vapor barrier tapes are divided into winter and summer, the choice depends on the season and weather conditions.

Summer tapes are designed for operation at a temperature of 5-35 degrees, winter ones have proven themselves well in conditions below zero. Width plays an important role when choosing a tape, it should be 45 mm larger than the width of the installation seam. Compliance with this condition will help to achieve the required level of vapor barrier.

The technology for installing windows and gluing vapor barrier tape consists of several stages.

Necessary:

  • clean the window opening from dust and dirt, install the frame without fixing it, mark the installation lines of the vapor barrier tape on the frame and the walls of the opening;
  • pull the frame out of the opening, stick the tape on it without removing the protective strip from the area intended for sticking to the wall.

Installation of a vapor barrier tape on a plastic window is carried out in one piece, breaks are unacceptable.

At the next stage - the assembly of the window structure with sashes and the capital installation in the opening. At the final stage, the vapor barrier strip is glued to the window sill.

window tape

The range includes a large selection of high-quality window tapes, a variety of sizes and in the required quantity. Indoor and outdoor window tape is widely used in a wide variety of construction and installation fields.

Window tape is a reliable connecting element, on the entire surface of which small holes are made in accordance with waterproofing standards. A wide choice of standard sizes allows to pick up option for the most different designs.

Premium Window Tapes

Window tape is a reliable connecting element, on the entire surface of which there are small holes.

In the manufacture of perforated tape, high quality polyethylene foam is used, the scope of use is determined by the manufacturing technology. One of the areas of application is the installation of ventilation elements.

Effective filtration of dirt and dust from the outside is achieved through holes through which accumulated condensate also escapes.

Thanks to these features, a unique microclimate is created in the room, the price of the mounting tape is not very high, which is one of the advantages of the material.
The advantages of window tapes can also be attributed to the acceleration of the pace of construction, they are indispensable when fastening parts with different expansion coefficients.

The advantage of double-sided window tapes is an increased level of elasticity, which is important in case of temperature changes.

Vapor-permeable diffusion tapes are also produced, which are used to create effective ventilation, which have an excellent level of moisture resistance.

Diffuse tape made of artificial membrane material is indispensable in the process of waterproofing assembly seams and joints. The tape can have one or two adhesive strips; when choosing, it is necessary to take into account the tasks of construction and the features of the window structure. One of the strips is attached to a translucent structure, the other - to a slope or wall surface.
A wide range of standard sizes allows you to quickly choose the right option for any building structure. Window tapes are equally well suited for both internal and external insulation during installation.

The innovative technology involves the implementation of insulation in several layers: that is why there is a distinction between external and internal window tapes.

Inner window tape made of flexible material, it has adhesive strips, it is specially designed to protect the seam from steam and moisture from the inside.
While creating outer tape the standards for waterproofing the outer side of the seam were taken into account.

Both types of material allow you to achieve the required level of moisture insulation while maintaining vapor permeability and protecting the structure from condensate.

I hope that this article has helped you understand new window installation technologies and convinced you of the need to use vapor barrier tape.

For a comparative test of the characteristics of window tapes, see the video:

To protect the mounting seams in window openings from moisture, a vapor barrier tape is used. It is made from butyl rubber or aluminum. This material is glued to the wet mounting foam at the seams, extending the life of the windows.

When installing a window in an opening, remember that its service life is related to how competent the installation will be. Even the highest quality structures will not be used for a long time if the installation is not done correctly. Due to improper work, moisture will gradually penetrate the walls, leading to the destruction of building materials and the spread of mold.

Vapor barrier tape

When installing the frame, consider a few important points:

  • On the inside of the room, we make a denser layer of mounting solution (for example, foam).
  • For high-quality sealing of all gaps, we use three-layer protection - the outer material saves from the effects of precipitation, the middle layer is responsible for thermal insulation, and the coating of the inner surface is for vapor barrier.

Vapor barrier provides reliable protection of the heat-insulating layer from condensate, which is present not only in the bathroom, but also in an ordinary room. In the process of finishing window slopes, we glue a special tape. The principle of vapor barrier is based on blocking the contact of moisture with the mounting foam, which forms the middle protective layer. Materials with low elasticity and water and air permeability are suitable for these purposes. When installing windows on a vapor barrier, you can not save. Such neglect will lead to rapid wear of frames, plaster and finishing materials.

To protect the seam, special vapor barrier tapes are usually used. They come in the form of a coiled and compressed sponge-like material. Absorbing moisture, the material swells, sealing all existing gaps. The vapor barrier tape for plastic windows has a number of advantages:

  1. 1. insulates moisture;
  2. 2. it is spent economically, practically without waste;
  3. 3. does not emit toxic substances;
  4. 4. easy to stick;
  5. 5. has a long service life.

2 Classification - what characteristics to look for

Tapes for moisture insulation are produced with one and two strips of glue. The second option allows you to process the joint of the window with the wall more efficiently. The material is classified by periods of use:

  • summer (air temperature - 5-40 ° C);
  • winter (temperature below 5 °C).

Depending on the nature of the surface to be treated, the tapes are produced in various sizes, so that any seams can be isolated. When choosing a material, keep in mind that it should exceed the gap by 4.5 cm in width. Foam tapes are suitable for work from the outside of the building, which will provide reliable sealing.

Moisture Insulation Tape

Adhesive finishing material made of butyl rubber, designed for processing window, balcony, door frames and joints between panels. It has a non-woven layer inside. After gluing, such a strip is primed, plastered, wallpapered or painted. There is a full-butyl vapor barrier tape made according to the Robiband system. It provides better processing of the assembly seam.

Metallized vapor barrier material is used for gluing seams with joints in rooms with high air humidity - bathrooms, baths, saunas. A layer of glue over the entire surface in this form greatly simplifies the work process. Manufacturers produce metallized tape of different widths. When selecting material, add 45 mm to the width of the seam.

The tape having a protective strip from polypropylene well maintains mechanical influence. In addition, it does not react with acids, organic solvents and alkali.

3 Understanding the variety of types of tapes - VS or GPL?

First on the list is PSUL (pre-compressed self-expanding sealing tape). It provides a high-quality fit of the window frame or door frame to the wall. This tape is used for vapor barrier of external joints and seams.

The next material is vapor barrier VS. It is used for sealing seams when dry finishing is performed. For example, under sandwich panels, drywall, plastic surfaces, etc. The tape has a layer of glue across the entire width - this property greatly simplifies the installation process. There is an improved version - BC +. It is supplemented with an anti-adhesion film. This additional coating provides a strong adhesion of insulation to building materials.

Robiband VM tape for vapor barrier

Robiband VM tape for vapor barrier is the next high-quality version of the material for processing seams. It is used for interior work, and a wet plaster solution is applied on top. Vapor barrier VM + is a sophisticated option with better performance.

The last type is GPL (hydro vapor barrier material). It is produced from high quality polyethylene foam. The tape has one laminated side, as well as an additional metallized layer. Its second surface is completely covered with glue. This tape is universal, that is, it can be used for all types of work. Its variety is GPL-S tape, which has similar characteristics.

4 How to stick insulation - we work without errors

The vapor barrier material not only provides protection against moisture, but also has an alternative property when properly glued - sound absorption. Applying a vapor barrier tape to the seams is done in one piece, there should not be any gaps. Before starting work, measure the length of the surfaces to be treated.

The gluing process consists of several steps:

  1. 1. Clean the window opening from dirt, dust and debris.
  2. 2. Before installation, remove the PVC window and wipe it with a dry cloth.
  3. 3. Put the structure in place and mark on the frame and wall where the tape will be attached.
  4. 4. The tape is attached to the window frame before the foam is applied to the seam.
  5. 5. Remove the structure and stick a vapor barrier on its surface around the perimeter.
  6. 6. Before installing the window in place, remove the remaining protective film from the adhesive surface.
  7. 7. When pasting the material, do not allow the formation of wrinkles. This defect will allow drops of liquid to pass under the vapor barrier, degrading performance.

In order for the window structure to serve for a long time, its installation must be carried out with strict observance of the existing technology. The outer material for steam, heat and water insulation must be glued after the mounting foam is completely polymerized. We process the seam under the window sill last.

If the tape is glued under a layer of plaster, then it must have a special layer that will ensure strong adhesion to the building material. The uneven joint between the wall and the window frame is covered with a flashing, and a vapor barrier is glued onto it. The use of building materials for wall decoration is permissible only if the requirements for water permeability are fully met.

If a metallized tape is used for vapor barrier, then additional reinforcement may be required when applied to a rough surface. To enhance the adhesive effect, self-adhesive tape with one or two adhesive strips is used. They are additionally treated with vapor barrier joints, eliminating and smoothing defects (places of peeling and wrinkling) formed during work.

The question of the need to vapor barrier windows by gluing the joints of window frames and the slope of the outer wall with a vapor barrier tape does not have a definite answer. But having decided to install plastic windows in the house, it is very useful to understand some aspects of the problem:

The use of vapor barrier tapes increases the cost of installation. But it is not a fact that a high quality installation will be achieved with a tape sticker. The preparation of the base for the tape is very important, and the sticker technology has subtleties. Violations of installation lead to the fact that the tape simply peels off and ceases to fulfill its task of vapor barrier. In addition, the unevenness of the opening makes it difficult to install the tape, and they do not always know how and do high-quality preparation.

One of the opinions of experts is that with the optimal organization of heating and air exchange in the house, the windows do not give any condensate or mold in the corners. The dew point is on the outside of the heat-insulating wall layer, and there can be no mold in the window corners. It does not matter whether the PSUL windows are glued with a membrane or not. But if there are problems with the ventilation hood and the heating in the house does not work well, then the vapor barrier of the windows will have a positive effect (although the problems of heating and ventilation must be addressed comprehensively). In any case, if a company providing services for the installation of PVC windows specifies the conditions for their future operation by the customer and offers options for sealing joints, this is definitely a plus for the company. Since there are “companies” and employees who “do not like” the abbreviations PSUL and argue that they do not spare foam, and the guarantee for the window is a whole year. Unfortunately, as a result, the installation is not always successful and for the second winter it does not blow from the cracks of the windows, and in the off-season there is no condensate along the slopes.

The seams between window frames and exterior walls are one of the weakest links and require careful hydro and thermal insulation. Mounting foam, filling the space between the opening and the frame, perfectly insulates from airborne noise and performs the task of thermal insulation of the joint. But moisture and ultraviolet light can destroy the foam in a period of several months to two years. Solve this problem by protecting the foamed joint with sealing. From the outside, waterproofing is performed so that atmospheric moisture does not get on the porous heaters, from the inside of the room the joint is glued with a vapor barrier tape.

Vapor barrier is necessary so that moisture from the outside air does not penetrate into the heat-insulating materials of the joint. According to the norms, internal seams for PVC windows should have a vapor permeability of not more than 0.01 mg / m * h * Pa. The vapor barrier is mounted before the windows are installed, sealing the joint from the inside: the window block is installed in the opening without fixing, the areas for gluing tapes are marked, then the block is removed and vapor barrier tapes are glued.

Means for protecting the joints of windows and balcony doors:

  • Silicone sealants
  • Insulation with padding - cords, tow, moss
  • foil tapes
  • PSUL tapes and tapes based on butyl rubber

For the right choice, it is important to consider the type of window finish and the position of the joint. To protect the joints of frames and plasterboard and plastic slopes (dry cladding) and to protect windows with plastered slopes, various means of insulation are used. For wooden windows installed in log cabins, natural fillers are usually used - sphagnum, jute, linen tow, etc.

Vapor barrier device

There are three layers:

  1. From the inside - thermal protection prevents heat loss from the room to the street
  2. The middle load-bearing insulating layer provides thermal insulation and sound insulation. These tasks are solved by polyurethane foam or other porous material. It is rational to include vapor barrier self-adhesive tapes in this inner layer if the window unit is mounted in wet rooms - kitchens, baths or showers
  3. The outer layer waterproofs the joint and protects against the penetration of cold street air

Vapor barrier tapes are available with a single-sided adhesive layer and double-sided. A one-sided sticker is used if the tape is mounted on the side surface of the window frame. Double-sided tape gives an advantage in the choice of fasteners: on the frame or in the window opening. According to the climatic versions, the tapes are also produced in two types - for areas with low winter temperatures - the winter version of the tape, and for areas where temperatures do not fall below + 5 ° C - the summer version.

The basis for the adhesive layers of the tapes is butyl rubber or metal.

The main types of vapor barrier tapes:

  • PSUL, or pre-compressed sealing tape - used for finishing and vapor barrier of external joints, provides a tight connection between the window frame and the outer wall. base material - butyl rubber, the thickness and elasticity of the tapes provide good insulation.
  • VS - vapor barrier tapes for sealing joints for dry finishing of slopes - made of plastic or drywall. gluing with BC tapes reduces the risk of condensation.
  • VM - vapor barrier tapes attached to the window frame, with an overlap, in order to improve the thermal insulation of the joints.
  • GPL - polyethylene foam tape, laminated on one side, with metal strips and a full-width adhesive layer.

In addition to the main layer of non-crosslinked polyethylene foam, which has a thickness of 2 mm and is waterproofing, the GPL tape has a second layer - both vapor barrier and protective. the thickness of the outer layer is only 20 microns, the material is polypropylene.

GPL tapes are used for all types of door and window blocks as universal. They combine two tasks - waterproofing and vapor barrier. The structure of foamed polyethylene is elastic and closed-porous, so the material does not absorb moisture, hygroscopicity is almost zero. The tapes are flexible and suitable for mounting on uneven surfaces. Metal lamination and the quality of the main polymer (polypropylene as a protective layer) determine the chemical resistance in both acidic and alkaline environments, and as a result, good durability of the HPL tapes.

GPL tapes are produced in standard sizes for the width of window and door blocks, 9 in width; 12; 15; and 20 cm, in rolls of 15 m.

Features of installation of vapor barrier tapes

  • The minimum temperature for mounting tapes is + 10⁰С
  • The sticker of the tapes is carried out on the prepared surface - complete cleaning of all contaminants, dedusting and degreasing. Preparation is essential for the proper functioning of the vapor barrier.
  • Marking lines for attaching vapor barrier tapes. Determine the position of the frame in the opening without fixing, mark the lines of the sticker of the tapes, then remove the frame and mount the tape according to the markup
  • Protective strips of paper are removed from the tapes immediately before the final installation of the frames.
  • After gluing the tapes, the joint is filled with mounting foam
  • Tapes under the window sills are mounted last
  • If wet plaster is planned over the vapor barrier tape, then the outer side of the tape must ensure adhesion with the mortar. From the range of vapor barrier tapes it is possible to choose a material with the desired properties
  • Tapes are glued along the perimeters of the frames without breaks, in continuous stripes. Overlapping and overlapping of tapes is not needed; at the joints, adhesive compositions recommended by manufacturers or adhesive tape are used

The question of the need for vapor barrier windows is decided by each owner, based on the specific operating conditions of the windows. Budget options for mounting the tape are absolutely excluded. But many experts believe that the vapor barrier of windows is by no means reinsurance, but a real opportunity to increase the resource of window systems and improve the microclimate in the premises, and savings in this case is not a completely correct approach.

Welcome!

Vapor barrier tape for windows

  • for the summer period with air temperature from + 5°С to + 35°С;

Installing the internal vapor barrier sealing tape

How to properly apply vapor barrier tape on PVC windows
