Currently, the police are searching the house where Cruz lived, as well as a number of other addresses. Classes at the school where the earlier shooting took place have been canceled for the remainder of the week. 17 people remain in hospitals, three are in critical condition. According to other information, the total number of victims is at least 20.

Shots were fired at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School, where more than 3,000 people study, before the end of classes at 14:30 (22:30 Moscow time) - after a fire alarm sounded in the building and students began to run out of classes. The police suspect that Cruz himself turned on the alarm in order to spread panic and fire at a large number of fleeing people at once.

When the shooting started, most of the students rushed back to their classrooms. According to eyewitnesses, one of the teachers saved 19 students from bullets by locking herself in the classroom with them. The media published a photo taken by one of the students, which shows people hiding under the tables.

“All the students ran into the classrooms and hid there. The teachers told us to sit quietly and not go out anywhere. Therefore, I think we survived,” said one of those who were at the school.

Cruz, armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle with a 30-round magazine, which is in service with the American police and is freely sold for self-defense and hunting, shot everyone he saw in front of him. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel later reported 17 dead. According to him, 12 people died at the school, three - outside the building, two more died in the hospital.

The sheriff gave some details of the tragedy. “We lost the Stoneman Douglas football coach today. My triplets graduated from this school. The deputy sheriff's son was shot in the arm, I won't give a name," he said.

The police detained Cruz about one and a half kilometers from the school.

It is already known that he was expelled from the school where he massacred due to discipline problems.

His former classmates were more specific. According to them, the crime committed by Cruz could have been foreseen, since he saw in the weapon a means to prove to others his superiority.

Cruise's father reportedly died 12 years ago from a serious illness, his adoptive mother passed away last year. The shooter's cousin said he was forced to take care of himself.

It is also established that Cruz bought the firearm in 2017, having successfully passed all the necessary procedures.

“My prayers and my condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible tragedy in Florida. No child, teacher or anyone else should feel threatened in American schools,” Trump tweeted.

This is the fourth case of school shootings in the United States since the beginning of the year. At the end of January, a girl was shot at a school in Ellis County, Texas. The next day, two people were killed in a shooting at a school in Benton, Kentucky. On February 1, two students were injured in a shooting at a school in Los Angeles, while a 12-year-old girl was shot.

Before the tragedy in Parkland, the most resonant was the shooting at an American school on April 20, 1999, when Columbine High School graduates Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold staged a massacre. They shot 13 people and wounded 23. When the cartridges ran out, the attackers committed suicide.
