Hanging chair. Swing for rest and work - do-it-yourself cocoon hanging chair from a hoop and rope Do-it-yourself wicker swing

With the arrival of summer, many city dwellers strive to get out into nature at least for the weekend, and if there is a summer cottage and circumstances permit, then for the whole summer. There is probably no such person who would not like to take a nap in the fresh air accompanied by birdsong, swaying in a hammock or armchair. To save money on the purchase of this simple but rather expensive furniture element of the interior, a do-it-yourself hanging chair can be made in several ways, which will be discussed below.

For the manufacture of some options, the simplest materials are used, which, perhaps, simply litter the barn. For others, you will have to prepare material in nature or purchase it in a store. Manufacturing may require the "mobilization" of their abilities in needlework - weaving or knitting, so that work is found not only for men, but sometimes even more - for housewives.

Varieties of hanging chairs

Hanging chairs began to be widely used in the 50s of the last century - then they were at the height of fashion. Many designs have been developed for these distinctive "luxury" items, made from a wide variety of materials.

  • An armchair with a rigid frame made of rattan, vine, metal, plastic or acrylic. In this case, the base can be covered with a strong fabric or braided with twigs of vine, rattan or leather strips.
  • Armchair with a soft frame, made on the principle of a hammock. The main difference between these seats is the size and method of suspension. If the hammock is fixed on two supports located at a certain distance from each other, then one is quite enough for a chair.

  • Chair-cocoon, made on a rigid frame and has wicker walls. The difference between this type of product and other types of chairs is that its internal space is half hidden from the outside world. Such a place is ideal for people who love privacy.

  • The drop chair is mainly intended for children's rooms, as it looks more like a suspended little house in which to hide or even sleep. In addition, there is enough space in it to take your favorite toys with you.

Making simple hanging chairs

In this section of the article, we will consider several options for making hanging chairs, which should be quite feasible for most skilled owners.

Hanging chairs from a hoop

The easiest way to make a hanging chair at home is from your regular hula hoop, which can be found in almost every home or at a sporting goods store. Moreover, there are two options for making such a piece of garden furniture. One of them will require one hoop, the other two, slightly different from each other in size. Both options will be shown - you can choose the one that seems easier to manufacture.

First option
  • To make such a chair, you will need the following materials:

- one hoop from a pipe 20 ÷ 30 mm in cross-section, with a diameter of 700 to 1100 mm, depending on how large the chair should be;

- two identical cuts of fabric measuring 1200 × 1200 mm or 1600 × 1600 mm. A durable fabric is selected, you can take a lining material on a synthetic winterizer that already has a stitching;

- a cut of the same fabric 200 mm wide, 3500 ÷ 4000 mm long (you can use several pieces);

- colored dense fabric for sewing pillowcases for two to three pillows;

- synthetic winterizer, also having a width of 200 mm, and a length of about 3500 ÷ 4000 mm (several pieces are possible);

- synthetic winterizer for stuffing pillows;

- border for processing cutouts in the case - 800 ÷ 1000 mm;

- zipper lock with a length of 700 ÷ 1100 mm;

- strong nylon cord with a thickness of 6 ÷ 8 mm or a linen rope with a diameter of 10 ÷ 12 mm, a length of 10500 mm (10.5 m);

- two powerful metal carabiners and rings for hanging the chair.

  • From the tools you need to prepare:

- threads and needles for hand sewing;

- a sewing machine;

- scissors;

- marker;

- tape measure or centimeter.

  • The manufacturing process of such a chair is presented step by step in the table:
Illustration
In the first step, the fabric is spread on the table, and then the hoop is placed on it in the center.
Further, with the help of a centimeter around the hoop, a circle is measured and marked with a marker, with a radius of 250 mm larger.
A circle is cut out of the fabric along the outlined line.
You need to prepare 2 pieces of such parts.
The finished elements of the future cover should look like this.
In the next step, one of the cut round blanks is folded in half and then cut.
Further, along the line of the central cut of the circle, it is pinned, and then the lightning is attached.
250 mm recede from the edge of the cut, and from this point the lock is fastened, that is, it should be clearly along the length equal to the diameter of the hoop.
After the lock is stitched, the two halves of the cover are sewn around the circumference, and then it is turned inside out and laid out on the table.
Further, to make it convenient to make markings for the cutouts, the finished cover should be put on the hoop.
The markup is produced as shown in the presented drawing.
The places where the cutouts are to be made are marked with a marker.
According to the marks made, four notches are made through which cords or ropes will be fixed to the hoop.
To make the cut out holes look neat, you need to trim them with tape.
Having finished work on the cover, you can proceed to the preparation of the hoop.
The hoop is wrapped with padding polyester.
In several places, the metal can be slightly greased with polymer glue so that the wrapped material does not slip while it is stitching.
Further, the sheathing process itself goes directly.
It is carried out by hand, over the edge of the stitches.
The next step is to sheathe the hoop wrapped with padding polyester with a cloth.
Well, so that it does not slip, at first its edges are wrapped inward and cleaved with pins.
The fabric is also sewn by hand, over the edge.
As you sew, the locking pins are pulled out.
The trimmed hoop is inserted into the cover through the hole, into which the zipper is sewn, which is then fastened.
Further, two pieces of 2200 mm and two pieces of 2800 mm are cut from the cord.
Then, the cords are folded in half and the ends are tied together.
After that, they are threaded through the cut holes under the hoop.
The fastening of the cords for the hoop occurs by threading the knotted ends into a loop formed on the other side of them.
Last but not least, suitable pillows are cut and sewn, and the chair is hung in the place chosen for it.
How to carry out the process of fixing the chair to the ceiling or in the yard will be discussed below.
Second option
The second option is two hoops in openwork braiding

In the second version, in the manufacture of the hanging chair, slightly different materials are used, in contrast to the first model. Such chairs are made in the same way as hammocks using the macrame technique, but they can be made in another way, accessible to everyone, since not everyone knows the art of weaving.

  • So, for the manufacture of this chair, you need to prepare:

- two metal hoops (ready-made or made independently, for example, from a metal-plastic pipe) with a cross-section of 30 ÷ 35 mm, a diameter of 700 mm for the manufacture of a seat frame, and 1100 mm - for bypassing the back;

- in this case, a nylon cord is used for weaving, 4 mm thick and 900 m will be required, but instead of it, a linen or jute rope with a diameter of 5 ÷ 6 mm or strips of dense leather can be used;

- nylon cord with a cross section of 6 ÷ 7 mm for hanging the chair - 12 m;

- 2 wooden blocks with a section of 20 × 35 mm, or 2 metal tubes with a diameter of 20 ÷ 25 mm. Instead, you can use two pieces of rope with a cross section of 10 ÷ 12 mm.

The manufacturing process for this version of the chair includes the following operations:

IllustrationBrief description of the performed operation
The first step is to wrap both hoops with a cord. Every 20 turns, a tightening is made so that the hinges do not slip.
Sometimes a small amount of polymer glue is used to secure the rope to the metal, which, of course, should not protrude outward.
The cord must be laid very tightly, otherwise the finished product will look sloppy.
The next step is to braid the hoop, which will serve as a seat.
For this, a "checkerboard" pattern can be used, consisting of various nodes.
This illustration shows a version of the checkerboard braid made of flat knots along the diagonal.
This photo shows the same drawing, but in a direct version.
For those home craftswomen who find it difficult to master the art of macrame, or just want to work on braiding the hoop faster, we can recommend using the technique that is used to weave rugs. But, if, after finishing the rug, it is removed from the hoop, then during the manufacture of the chair, the resulting weaving remains on the round frame.
To make the weaving strong, you need to choose high-quality cords for the base, which is fixed on the hoop.
The next step is to connect the two prepared hoops together with a cord, tightly wrapping it in the front of the future chair.
For the rigidity of the back, two supports are made of bars, tubes or a thick cord, which are tightly braided with a thin cord.
These two jumpers (shown with green lines in the illustration above) are fastened to the back and seat hoop using weaving.
Next, you need to do the weaving on the back of the chair - in the remaining gap between the two hoops.
Braiding can also be made using the macrame technique, the above technique for creating rugs, or the simplest crocheting - whichever is more convenient.
It should be noted here that the installation and braiding of the backrest supports can be done both before and after weaving the backrest.
It is also better to braid the slings for hanging the chair with a cord - this way they will be much stronger and more reliable.
The slings are fixed on the backrest hoop in four places, and their length is adjusted to the desired size when the chair is suspended in the chosen place.

It should be clarified that instead of hula-hoop, plastic (polyethylene) pipes for water supply can be used to make chairs - they are light in weight and have sufficient strength. The advantage of this material also lies in the fact that the braid will look much more profitable and aesthetically pleasing on a pipe of a larger diameter. In addition, plastic is warmer and softer than metal. Pipes are sold in construction markets in the form of coils and already have a suitable shape, so you just need to select the desired ring diameter and fasten it correctly.

Suitable for creating frame and pipe hoops. They are somewhat more expensive, but also more durable, since their walls consist of several layers. Metal-plastic pipes, as well as plastic ones, are easy to cut with a hacksaw.

The length of the pipe segment required for the hoop is determined by the formula for the circumference:

L = π × D ≈ 3.14 × D

- where D Is the required diameter of the hoop,

S- required pipe length.

For example, if you need to make a hoop with a diameter of 1100 mm, then this will require 3.14 × 1100 = 3454 mm, or when rounding 3.5 meters of pipe.

There is no need to purchase rigid polypropylene pipes, since when bent, they can behave completely unexpectedly.

The ends of the pipe are connected to each other using a special insert of a smaller diameter than the pipe, but tightly fitting into it. This insert is usually made of wood or dense plastic. It is inserted into the ends of the pipe, then they are tightly shifted and fixed with stainless self-tapping screws 15 ÷ 20 mm long, depending on the diameter of the pipe. It is important to take this circumstance into account so that the screws do not go through.

Wicker hanging chair

The task of increased complexity - a wicker chair

Hanging wicker chairs are considered a traditional option, which can be made from specially prepared flexible twigs of willow, bird cherry, rakita, rattan or bast. In central Russia, the easiest way to find a broom or willow, which grows densely along the banks of the rivers.

Weaving material - long and flexible willow rods

In order to make a wicker chair, you need to purchase and prepare the following materials:

  • Long willow twigs with a diameter of 10 ÷ 15 mm - they will need about 400 ÷ 450 pieces. It is better, of course, to use rattan, especially for those who are trying their hand at the art of basket weaving for the first time, as it is more flexible and easy to work with.
  • For the front of the chair, a metal hoop, metal-plastic pipes can be used as a frame, or the base can be created from several twigs of a vine, woven obliquely.
  • Strong twine and glue will be needed to tie the frame.
  • A pruner, an awl, a knife and a ruler are needed to measure the material and cut it.
  • A cord with a section of 4 mm made of nylon in color is close to the shade of the rods - it will be needed for weaving the back. If you have skills in weaving, then the back is also made from a vine.
  • Cords, chains or ropes for hanging the chair. Their length will depend on the height of the room's ceiling or other suspension point.

The weaving pattern can be different, and its complexity depends on the experience in this art.

The simplest option for making a suspended cocoon chair involves the following operations:

  • The chopped vine is steamed and peeled from the bark, and then beaten off - this is necessary in order for it to be more pliable in weaving.
  • To begin with, the frame of the chair is formed. If a hoop is used for the front part, and an oval shape in the form of a cocoon is planned, then the hoop will have to be flattened a little. However, it is best to use a reinforced-plastic pipe for this frame element, which can be easily shaped into the desired shape and connected to its ends using an insert.
  • Then, the rest of the frame elements are fixed to the pipe. The rods must have a cross-sectional thickness of at least 6 ÷ 8 mm, and the length is greater than the height of the chair by 250 ÷ 400 mm, if they are fixed vertically. If, however, rods of this length were not found, then the frame can be made of horizontally fixed elements.
  • By mounting the rods vertically, they are fixed on the upper part of the frame, in its middle, so that they gradually move apart, and in the middle of the back of the chair the distance between them should be 20 ÷ 25 mm.
  • The rods are bent, creating the shape and depth of the chair, and at the bottom they are again collected towards the middle. This is a kind of basket-frame, which will be in the finished form in an upright position.
  • There is another way to form the base, when horizontal rods are fixed on the sides of the frame. They are also mounted every 20 ÷ 25 mm, and the shape of the future chair is also created from them.
  • The fastening of the frame vine to the base occurs by bending it through the pipe from the inside of the chair to the outside. The folded end is then intercepted with twine with the vine.
  • Further, the frame rods are braided transversely with a thinner vine, starting from the bottom and gradually rising up. If weaving goes along a horizontally arranged frame, then it necessarily starts from the middle of the back to the sides. On the pipe, the end of the rod is bent and twisted around the main vine. Each rod is closely pressed against the previous one.

An example of compaction of the laying of a vine when weaving along vertically installed frame elements.
  • The entire basket of the chair is woven in the same order. The end of the last rod is bent, tucked in and secured in the weave.

Since in such a chair in the seat area there is no reliable support due to the oval shape, a foam cushion of sufficient thickness is inserted into the lower part as it - this can be tried on in place.

Hanging chair from the board

Another type of hanging chairs can be made of boards, in several versions. Installation of such a structure is quite simple, even for those owners who do not have the skills in carpentry. It is enough to be able to carefully handle the surface of the boards and drill even holes in them.

First option

This option is ideal for a summer cottage - such a chair is easy to hang in the shade of trees, where it will be very pleasant to relax in the fresh air.

  • To make such a structure, you must have the following materials on hand:

- Boards, dimensions: length 600 ÷ 700 mm, width 120 ÷ 150 mm, thickness 10 ÷ 15 mm. These elements will require 16 pieces. The boards must be well finished, it is desirable to round off the edges on them. Some craftsmen use boards from standard Euro pallets.

- Nylon paracord - 10 m.

- Water-based varnish for outdoor use.

  • To work, you need the following tools:

- Hacksaw or jigsaw.

- Drills and drills for wood with diameters of 6, 8 and 10 mm.

- Sandpaper.

Work on the manufacture of such a chair is carried out as follows:

IllustrationBrief description of the performed operation
If the chair is made of pallet boards, then it will need to be carefully disassembled, without allowing cracks to appear or expand.
Then, also very carefully, nails are pulled out of the boards.
After that, the edges of the boards with holes from the nails are sawn off exactly.
All surfaces must be carefully processed to perfect smoothness, otherwise you can easily get a splinter, and in the most inconvenient place.
The processed boards are marked out, folded in two or three pieces and through holes are drilled in them at a distance of 50 mm from each other.
It should be noted here that the holes can be drilled along the edge, with a distance of 15 ÷ 20 mm from it, or in the middle of the board in two rows, at a distance of 30 mm from each other.
Further, the boards are stacked side by side, and the cord is inserted into the holes, as shown in the illustration shown.
In the next step, the cord is pulled through the holes across the previous connections.
When assembling, remember that you should not tighten the cord too much, as the boards must be free enough in relation to each other. This is necessary so that the resulting structure can take the shape of a chair.
After pulling the cord, it is tied with a double knot on the back of the structure.
Further, in the upper board and in the second board from the bottom, with an indent from the edge of 35 ÷ 40 mm, in the middle of the board on both sides, two holes symmetrical about the center are drilled.
They will be required to pull the cords of the required length, for which the chair will be suspended.
In order for the cords not to converge pyramidal upwards, but to be stretched at the required distance, in the upper part, just below the suspension point of the structure, they must be fixed with a wooden frame.
After passing through the frame, all the cords are connected and braided into one rope.
The result is a comfortable chair, which can be additionally equipped with a foam mattress or pillow for comfort.
Second option

The second version of a wooden chair is even easier to make than the first, but it is more suitable for giving in quality. However, taking the proposed structure as a basis and strengthening it, even a suspended sofa can be made according to this principle.

In order to make just such a chair, you will need:

- 14 well-processed boards 500 ÷ 700 mm long, 50 ÷ 60 mm wide, 15 ÷ 20 mm thick.

- Nylon cord with a diameter of 10 mm, a length of 10 m.

- Self-tapping screws with wide heads (press washers) 10 mm long.

Of the tools, you will need, in principle, only if the lumber is pre-processed and covered with protective compounds.

  • In the first step, the boards are laid out evenly parallel to each other, face down, a distance of about 10 mm is maintained between them.
  • Next, you need to determine how long the cord is required for each side - for this, fitting is performed.
  • Between the laid boards, at a distance of 40 ÷ 50 mm from the edge, a cord is laid with a snake, and then in the same way it is laid in the opposite direction. Thus, each of their parts on both sides must be "dressed" with cords. The cords are twisted together in the gaps between the boards, tightening so that the distance between the beams is approximately 8 ÷ 10 mm.
  • When the cord is completely intertwined on one side of the chair, on the lower board, on the seamy side of the chair, both ends of the cord are aligned and securely pressed with a self-tapping screw with a wide head.

Hanging swing chair prices

hanging swing chair

After that, all the same is done on the other side of the chair.

  • Now, on each crossbar, on its two sides, on the back of the chair, the installed cords are fixed by screwing in self-tapping screws.
  • That's it, the chair is ready, and all that remains is to fix the slings and hang it in the chosen place.

How can you hang a chair

The suspension chairs discussed above can be fixed indoors or outdoors. If you decide to hang the finished chair from the ceiling, then you need to carefully prepare the place for this. The ceiling must be strong enough to support the anchorage with a minimum load of 120 kg.

  • If the ceiling is concrete, without voids, then, as a rule, there are no problems with the installation of the fastening. It is enough to drill a hole for a powerful anchor with a hook and then fix the hanger.

In the assortment of hardware stores, you can even find a special kit designed for this application - anchor, hook, metal chain.

  • If the ceiling slabs have voids, then a hole is made in the place necessary for hanging the chair, through which the cavity is filled with a special solution. These mixtures are called differently and they are made on the basis of high strength polymers. Such formulations are usually sold in special packages (tubes) for construction syringes.

Special composite polymer composition - "chemical anchor"

When the hole in the ceiling is filled, the metal anchor itself with a hook or ring is mounted in it, and then left for at least two days until the solution is completely polymerized and hardened. Only after that it will be possible to hang the chair on the mount.

  • If the ceiling has guaranteed reliable, strong floor beams, then fasteners specially designed for hanging the chair are mounted on them with bolts.

  • If the main ceiling is closed by a suspended structure, then another fastening option is used to hang the chair, which has a connecting section of the required length, ending with a threaded sleeve. Such a bracket is fixed in the concrete ceiling and exits through the surface of the false ceiling, and then a ring or hook, usually with a decorative collar, is screwed into it. Further, the chair can already be suspended from the ring.

  • You should not come up with your own fastening structure, as it may simply not be able to withstand a heavy load. It is recommended that you purchase a special ceiling mount made of high strength metal alloys and designed to withstand the appropriate load.
  • The slings for hanging the chair can be chains, cords, ropes, ready-made or self-woven from durable fabrics. It is desirable that the ropes correspond to the chosen style solution, in harmony with both the chair itself and the general interior of the room.

Other interesting hanging chair options

There are other types of hanging chairs that can be made at home. Perhaps one of these constructions will seem easier or more interesting to someone.

  • Such a model of a swing chair can be made not only by those who own the technique of weaving macrame. Those who have the simplest sewing skills will also do quite well, since the back and seat are woven, knitted or sewn.

For manufacturing, you will need slings and four wooden or plastic parts. A kind of frame is fastened from wooden elements, which will become the frame for the seat and back, and slings for hanging the chair from the ceiling are also tied to it.

Find out how to do it by reviewing several of the available options in an article on our portal.

A chair like this is quite comfortable for adults, but most likely not suitable for small children, as it is not safe enough.

  • This version of the chair can be independently made by those who own the welding craft, since the frame for such a structure is made of steel reinforcement and metal sheet. The seat of the chair is made of plywood, on which foam rubber is laid and fixed, and then sheathed with leatherette or leather.

Frameless chair - only fabric, foam rubber and strong cords
  • For this swing chair you will need a dense fabric, foam rubber, which will give the seat and back a shape, a nylon cord and a wooden part-spacer for the lines. To make such a chair, you only need a sewing machine, a centimeter, scissors and the ability to work with these tools.

  • Another interesting option for this unusual piece of furniture. The most difficult element in this design is the backrest frame. In this case, it is made of bent wood, but it can be replaced, for example, with two metal-plastic pipes. They are fastened together with construction tape, and then, decorated with a strapping from a nylon cord, or first sheathed with padding polyester, and then with a dense fabric or leatherette. The slings are also made of rope or cord, and the seat and back are cut out of strong fabric and secured to the frame back in four places where the slings will be secured.

From the examples considered in the article, it can be seen that making a hanging chair yourself is not such an impossible task, it is feasible for any diligent person. Therefore, you can choose the option that is most harmonious for a particular interior and is most suitable in terms of the complexity of the work and the level of your own skill, and then boldly get to work.

At the end of the article - a detailed demonstration of the manufacture of a country hanging hammock chair.

Video: Making a hammock chair yourself

A hanging chair will add comfort and coziness to a modern home. This piece of furniture has been known since the middle of the last century, and today it has migrated from colorful magazines and stories about unusual interiors to living rooms and to the dachas of many people.

Modern hanging chairs look original, as if floating in the air, and allow you to relax after a hard day at work. But such designs are not cheap, and it is not always easy to choose a "dream chair", although the range offered to consumers is quite wide. It is quite possible to make most of the models yourself - it is not so difficult. How to make a hanging chair? This is the subject of this master class.

Suspended structures represent various options, among which stand out:

  • "Rocking chairs" with a rigid frame made of plastic, metal, rattan or even a vine. For ease of use, such a base is in most cases covered with a soft cloth;

Armchair with sturdy frame

  • with a soft frame. These chairs are more like a traditional hammock. They are compact and take up little space, taking the shape of a human body;

In the form of a hammock

  • a chair called "cocoon". Wicker "walls" of this design, as it were, hide those who like to retire from prying eyes;

Cocoon armchair

  • chair-"drop", outwardly reminiscent of a small house. A number of such structures (for example, installed in a nursery) have small doors, which contribute to the feeling of a "nest" (sometimes they are called that).

Armchair "Drop"

Materials for making

Having decided on the design of the chair that you are going to make at home, you need to understand what materials you will use:

  1. For a chair that resembles a swing, thick fabric and thick synthetic ropes, as well as small blocks of wood, are quite suitable.
  2. A cocoon chair can be made of rattan, willow twigs, as well as any other branches that have sufficient flexibility.
  3. Some models require plastic or steel hoops. Also, to make a chair you will need textiles of increased wear resistance, synthetic filler in order to make the rest more comfortable, as well as any decorative elements that seem necessary to you.

Seat techniques

To create a seat, you need to get creative and use various techniques, such as:

  • macrame. The airiness of the appearance of such a structure is provided by bizarre combinations of rope weaves and knots. This method of creation is perhaps the most common;
  • patchwork. This is the name of a patchwork canvas. It is sewn over the durable material of the seat and serves for decoration - the "rocking chair" looks very stylish;
  • knitting. This technology allows you to combine cords of different colors in the work, which gives the designer space for imagination;
  • tatting. The hanging chair seat made using this technique looks weightless and very original.

What is necessary?

To make a frame suspended chair to the ceiling, you should purchase (or find at home) the following materials:

  • gloves;
  • scissors, tape measure;
  • hoops made of metal, wood or, for example, PVC;
  • braid, non-woven;
  • ring, buckle;
  • polyamide threads and tapes;
  • foam rubber;
  • high strength cords and slings.

Manufacturing technology

And so you decided to take a chance and make a frame chair, and with your own hands and a hanging one. Take whatever is required and then proceed as follows:

  1. Wrap the base of the frame with foam rubber, fixing it with glue.
  2. Wrap polyamide tapes or macrame threads over the top of the foam.
  3. Connect the ready-made bases with tape or ropes for fastening.
  4. Please note that the main elements of the frame are not chosen the same size - they should be located from largest to smallest, forming the shape of the chair.
  5. The resulting base must be suspended from the ceiling of the room using slings and an iron ring.

Basic installation rules

It should be noted that it is possible to install the chair mounts on the shelf only if it is strong enough. In a situation where there is a floor made of slabs with voids, it should be strengthened by filling the “holes” with anchoring mortars based on high strength polymers.

Securing the chair with an anchor

Holes are drilled in wooden ceilings and fastening bolts are placed in them. A worthy option for mounting the chair is a special ceiling mount made of heavy-duty alloys.

Chains or durable textiles are used as the connecting material - the choice of how to fasten depends on the interior design and the characteristics of the chair.

Special fastening for suspended ceilings

Why do you need a rack?

Chair suspended from the rack

Ceiling mountings for chairs have a number of disadvantages, the main one being that the hanging piece of furniture cannot be moved from the place where the hook is mounted. To avoid this situation, a special stand is often used for the chair, which can be purchased additionally. This technology allows you to install a suspended structure wherever you like - this is especially important in children's rooms, where the interior often changes, and the load on the chair is not so great. In addition, the presence of a stand frees the owner of the chair from the need to mount the mount directly on the ceiling, which is associated with a number of problems and is quite troublesome. In any case, a hanging chair in the interior looks extremely advantageous - whether you decide to supplement it with a stand or not.

The cover will help

Hanging hammock chair

How can you make a hanging chair with your own hands, without having skills, for example, knitting and macrame? It is best to opt for a hanging chair with a cover. To make this we need:

  • hoop;
  • a piece of matter;
  • non-woven or braid;
  • slings;
  • buckles and a metal ring (for fixing).

The hoop can be created from pipes, using metal-plastic, or from wood. When applying the latter, one should be prepared for the fact that natural material may dry out over time.

First of all, we make a cover. After cutting it open and marking the places for the lines, sew both circles together, leaving a hole in order to insert the hoop. Fill the cover with padding polyester, fixing it with an inconspicuous seam. Reinforce the structure on the hoop. Secure the straps by putting buckles on them in order to be able to adjust the chair.

We spread the fabric, lay the hoop in the center Mark with a marker a circle with a radius of 25 cm larger than the radius of the hoop Cut out 2 such circles
We fold one of the circles in half and cut along the line of the central cut of this circle a zipper is sewn in, a length equal to the diameter of the hoop Sew two round halves of the cover and turn it out
We make markings according to the drawing We make verses for the mounts We wrap the hoop with padding polyester
We sew it with a cloth We sew the edges of the cutouts with tape Insert the hoop into the cover
We put in the cords We hang the chair

Before you learn how to make a hanging chair, decide who it is for. The material from which the frame will be made and the choice of fasteners depend on the magnitude of the load. It matters where the product is installed. When creating an outdoor chair, choose stronger materials, fabrics that are resistant to fading and rain. And of course, consider your capabilities, for example, working with metal requires certain skills, abilities, the use of special devices. But anyone who wishes can master the basics of weaving macrame by carefully reviewing the training master class on the Internet.

Romantic hanging chair

Such an openwork swing will decorate a bedroom, a loggia, and provide a comfortable place for relaxation in nature. Having mastered the macrame technique, you can weave an original comfortable and attractive hanging chair at home.

The originality of this product lies in the fact that its frame is made up of two fastened hoops of different diameters. The choice of these structural parts is given special importance, since they are the rigid base of the product, and must withstand a significant load. After all, it is so difficult for children to resist not to use the hanging wicker chair as a swing.

What do you need to work?

To start a master class on creating a chair using the macrame technique, you need to prepare:

  • 2 metal hoops: 700 mm in diameter for the seat, 1100 mm in diameter for the base of the back. The gymnastic hoops are not strong enough. Under significant loads, they will deform. Therefore, it is better to use hoops made of metal-plastic pipes with a cross section of 35 mm in work. They exhibit high strength thanks to the braiding inside the rings.
  • Inserts and screws for fastening metal-plastic pipes.
  • 12 m slings.
  • 2 cords that we will use to connect the rings.
  • 2 wooden rods.
  • 900 m macrame cord. It is better to purchase a cord at a retail outlet that specializes in construction assortment. We recommend a polyamide rope (4 mm diameter) with a polypropylene center.
  • Gloves for work.
  • Roulette.
  • Scissors.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. First you need to determine what the frame of the wicker chair will be. To form each hoop, you need to fix the ends of the metal-plastic pipe. To do this, we use wooden or plastic inserts, which we fasten with screws.
  2. Next, we calculate how long the section of the cord should have, which will braid the frame (large and small circles of the base) according to the formula S = 3.14 * D (moreover, S is the length of the metal-plastic pipe, D is the diameter of the hoop).
  3. First, using the prepared cord, we wind the hoops. At the end of the process, the frame should be completely covered with a cord. To wrap a meter of hoop, about 40 m of material is consumed. To increase the density, after every 15-20 turns, you should additionally pull the cord with effort.
  4. You can weave the mesh itself using any of the macrame techniques that you own. For example, in the simplest way - "chess".

When weaving, we use a double cord. We also attach the canvas to the hoop using double knots.

  1. During work, control the uniform tension of the cord, so you will be able to weave a neat and elastic product.
  2. We assemble the finished mesh and braided hoops into a single structure. We connect the hoops together from one edge, wrapping them with one cord (this is the end of the future seat).

  1. On the opposite side, we install two identical vertical wooden rods on the parts of the hoops that form the frame. At the joints, cuts should be made for better fixation. The height of the back of the future hanging chair depends on the size of the rod.
  2. We start forming the back. Use any kind of weaving technique, starting with the top piece and working your way up to the seat.
  3. Fasten the ends of the cords that remain on the lower hoop, making them in the same brushes.
  4. Reinforce the seat-back connection with two large diameter harnesses.
  5. The wicker chair is ready. It remains to attach slings to it and hang it in the planned place.

A place to retreat: hammock chair

The hammock chair lacks a rigid frame, so it stands out among other similar products for its compactness and mobility. Such a seat can be taken with you to a picnic to be mounted on a tree, attached to the ceiling in the house, or hung on a special holder. Sitting in a hammock, you can only sway a little, but you should not use it as a swing. Otherwise, the mount will loosen over time and become unreliable. Making a hammock chair with your own hands is easy, it has a fairly simple design. This master class will help you create a product designed for a weight of up to 90 kg.

Required materials and tools

  • An oak thorn or shovel handle.
  • Thick rope.
  • 2 m of sturdy fabric (like a canvas).
  • 2 steel snap hooks.
  • A can of black paint (or another color of your choice).
  • Scissors.
  • Electric drill with drill.
  • Sewing machine.

Work description

  1. Fold a piece of fabric in two layers. Using a marker and a ruler, mark the corner, cut it off (as shown in photo 1).
  2. Unfold the fabric and sew the bottom and top edges.

  1. Unfold the material so that the longer side is on the right hand. Fold over the edge to create pockets where we will tighten the cord. Pre-fold or overlock the cut site, this will allow the fabric to retain its structure longer.
  2. Repeat the same steps on the other side of the fabric.
  3. Sew the edges neatly and secure the seam.
  4. Drill two holes on each side of the oak stick (or handle) for the attachment device.
  5. Using a can of paint, paint on the fabric. To do this, you can use various methods and stencils. The paint should dry within an hour. After completely dry, if desired, apply the design on the other side.
  6. Pass the cord through the hole in the side spike (which is closer to the edge). Tie a knot, then pull it through the prepared (sewn) narrow cavity in the fabric. Tie a knot before threading into the second hole in the tenon. Repeat the operation on the other side of the hammock, but tie the knots on the cord in reverse order.

  1. Make a knot for the carabiner (as in photo 9) in the middle of the cord. Attach the carabiner. Using a drill, drill a hole in the ceiling for the hook. Install the hook.

For a more comfortable sitting in your new hammock chair, sew or use a ready-made round pillow, placing it in a pillowcase that matches the fabric of the chair in color. As you can see, building a hammock chair with your own hands is very short and inexpensive. Adults and, of course, children will be happy to use it.

How to hide in a cocoon

A cocoon chair is a sturdy metal frame, braided (with greater or lesser density), most often with artificial rattan. Being in such a structure, a person feels a special feeling. The hard shell-cocoon, easily swaying, creates an atmosphere of security inside, fenced off from the problems of the outside world.

Of course, not everyone can make a similar hanging chair with their own hands, because one cannot do without a welding machine in work. But if you know a person or workshop who can help you, feel free to plan a wicker cocoon chair that will provide you with many pleasant hours of relaxation.

Tools and materials

  • 2000 mm wire or reinforcement with a diameter of 8 mm for the base of the ellipse.
  • 1 spoke with a diameter of 8 mm for the seat.
  • 7 spokes with a diameter of 8 mm for the back wall.
  • Vise for shaping fittings.
  • Welding machine.
  • Metal grinding machine.
  • Bar, nail.
  • Roulette, square.
  • 120 m of rope 16 mm in diameter (cut into 10 m pieces).
  • Pencil on paper.

Operating procedure

  1. Take a large sheet of paper, draw two perpendicular lines 1000x900 mm so that their intersection is shifted down. Draw an ellipse.
  2. Measure according to the plan, then cut 2 pieces from the metal rod. Bend them according to the drawn diagram and weld them at the bottom and top.
  3. Align the resulting shape with the diagram.
  4. Weld the lower arch, which will be in place of the seat, to the metal ellipse, slightly tilting it back.
  5. You need to hammer a nail into a wooden block prepared in advance, while leaving a part of it in order to form a bracket. Insert the bent knitting needle into the bracket and weld this point to the arch.
  6. Weld other knitting needles evenly at the top and bottom to form the back wall of the cocoon.
  7. To make the structure strong, weld a pre-bent horizontal rod.
  8. With even rods, retreating the same distance, we sew up the arched seat.
  9. Sand all welds with a corner grinder.
  10. Degrease the metal frame-frame with a special compound, paint it with the paint of your choice in 2 layers.
  11. Starting at the bottom of the frame, twist the needles alternately (as a wattle fence is made) until you have covered the entire frame. Remember to secure the ends of the ropes on the back.

You just have to choose a mounting method and install a comfortable seat. Such a cocoon chair can become a place for relaxation both indoors, attached to the ceiling, and outdoors, suspended from a separate support or a strong tree branch. It will support a person's weight of about 80 kg.

If you know how to sew on a typewriter, you can weave something using the macrame method, or you know the art of welding for metal, be sure to use one of the master classes suggested above. Give joy and pleasure to yourself and your loved ones.

Making a hanging chair with your own hands is a feasible task, the main thing is to choose a convenient manufacturing technique. As a child, everyone loved a swing. The gentle rocking is so soothing. And it’s not surprising that as adults, everyone wants to return to these moments of peace and tranquility. A hammock stretched between two old trees at the dacha, and a wicker hanging chair that gently sways on the dacha veranda - such a swing will win the love of any adult and, of course, children.

Making a hanging chair with your own hands is a feasible task

For the manufacture of a hanging chair, completely different materials are used. It all depends on what the frame will be. Today, the following structures are relevant:

  1. Rigid frame. Traditionally, structures are made from rattan or vine rods. In a modern interpretation, you can find metal, plastic and acrylic frames. The rigid frame is covered with dense fabrics or braided with a vine. The acrylic chairs are shaped like a ball.
  2. Soft frame. Fabrics are traditionally used for such chairs, and their closest relative is a hammock.
  3. Cocoon shape. A cocoon, or an egg chair, made on a rigid frame with wickerwork, will appeal to those who like to be alone with themselves. The walls are wide and cover the seated person, and the inner space is hidden inward. A separate world is created for the one sitting in such a cocoon. In such a suspended cocoon, you can hide from the outside world and enjoy your vacation.
  4. Drop shape. This shape works well when you need a child's hanging chair. Usually this is a chair in the form of a small house or cradle. You can sleep soundly in it or play hide and seek.
For the manufacture of a hanging chair, completely different materials are used.

When choosing a frame, you should pay special attention to the place where the structure will hang, the type of fastening depends on this and for whom exactly it is intended. If there are small children in the house, then the hanging element of the interior should be as strong and reliable as possible. For options used in open spaces, for example, in the country, mobility is important so that, if necessary, the structure can be quickly removed and it does not get wet in the rain.

Hammock chair made of metal hoop (video)

Simple hoop device

One of the easiest options for making a chair with your own hands is a chair with a hoop base. The frame here was the usual hula-hoop. If such sports equipment is idle in the house, you can give it a second life. Of course, a plastic hoop is not suitable here due to its fragility, but a metal hula-hoop will do. There are two ways to make a chair: with one hoop and two, different in diameter.

A hanging chair on one hoop is easy to make, the necessary materials:

  • metal hoop, diameter from 0.8 to 1.2 m (the size of the chair depends on the diameter);
  • fabric cuts (2 pieces) measuring 1.2x1.2 or 1.6x1.6 m (the fabric must be strong, you can use lining materials with padding polyester, usually they have factory stitching);
  • a piece of the same fabric, width 0.2 m, length 3.5-4 m (you can take several pieces);
  • synthetic winterizer, width 2 m, length 3.5-4 m;
  • zipper, length 0.8-1.2 m;
  • flax rope or strong cord, length 10-11 m.

How to make a hanging chair - you must follow the instructions:

  1. Step 1. Spread the fabric on a flat surface. A hoop is placed in the center of the fabric. A circle is drawn on the fabric with 25 cm indents from the hoop. A circle is cut out from the markings. There will be 2 details. If the chair is with padding polyester, then a circle is cut out of it using the same marking.
  2. Step 2. One of the fabric blanks is folded in half. Scissors cut the circle in the center - this is the place for the zipper. A zipper is attached along the cut line. Now fold 2 circles with the right side inward and sew. The cover must be turned on the front side.
  3. Step 3. 4 holes are cut to secure the cables. To prevent the holes from looking sloppy, they can be sheathed with braid.
  4. Step 4. To make the stay in the chair comfortable, the hoop should be sheathed with padding polyester. This should be done with a hand seam, a stitch over the edges, and so that the fabric does not slip, in some places you can glue it with polymer glue. The hoop, trimmed with padding polyester, is threaded through the sewn-in zipper into the finished cover.
  5. Step 5. It remains to secure the cables. Sections are cut from linen ropes or cord (2 pieces of 2.2 m and 2 of 2.8 meters). Each cut is folded in half, and strong knots are tied at the ends. Each rope is threaded through the hole and secured with a loop.
  6. Step 6. All that remains is to hang the chair.

Two-hoop design

More often, chairs are performed using the macrame weaving technique, like a regular hammock, but not everyone has this skill, and therefore you can make a chair in another way, more common and simple.

For the manufacture of such a chair, the list of required materials will change:

  • 2 metal hoops of different diameters - 0.7 and 1.1 m;
  • nylon cord 1 m long, thickness not less than 4 mm (can be replaced with linen or jute rope);
  • nylon cord for cables: length - 12 m, thickness - 7 mm;
  • metal pipes: diameter -25 mm, 2 pieces (can be replaced with a rope with a diameter of 12 mm).

Instructions:

  1. Step 1. First, 2 hoops are wrapped with nylon cord. To prevent the loops from crawling, weaving should be pulled every 20 turns. To secure the cord more securely, you can use polymer glue, but so that it is not visible on the hoop. The cord is packed in a very tight knit. Otherwise, the product will look messy.
  2. Step 2. The lower hoop is braided with a cord or rope. You can take any macrame technique as a basis, for example, checkerboard weaving. But if macrame is not within the power, then the way out of the situation will be circular weaving, as for rugs. Such weaving is simple to perform and durable in use.
  3. Step 3. Next, you need to weave 2 hoops together. This is done from the bottom, in the front of the chair. Then the back needs to be stiffened. 2 metal pipes, braided with a cord or rope, are fixed in the back of the chair. The tubes are braided or sewn to the lower and upper hoops, parallel to each other.
  4. Step 4. Now you can braid the back of the chair. The cables are attached to the upper hoop. They can also be braided with a cord or rope for strength.

Willow braided cocoon

In the middle of the last century, a hanging wicker chair or wicker chair was considered chic and fashionable. Today, furniture made from natural materials does not give up its positions. For manufacturing, they use willow twigs, rakita, rattan and bast are perfect. Russian producers most often use willow and willow.

A wicker children's hanging chair-cocoon (suspended, because it is suspended) can be made by hand. The art of weaving requires a lot of effort and patience. The weaving pattern depends on the skills of the master. Rattan is great for beginners as it is more flexible and docile.

Materials required for work:

  • willow twigs - 500 pieces with a diameter of 1-2 mm;
  • the front part should be a frame made of a metal hoop or pipe (you can use twigs woven into a braid);
  • strong twine for winding;
  • glue;
  • nylon cord with a diameter of 4 mm, natural color;
  • cables for fastening the finished product.

You should start with the preparation of the vine. To make it pliable in weaving, it should be steamed and peeled from the bark. The cleaned vine is beaten off.

If the frame of the chair is made of a hoop, then to give the shape of a cocoon, it must be bent so that an oval or egg shape is obtained.

Advice! The form of a cocoon or chair-egg comes out better from a metal-plastic tube. She can easily be given any shape.

Instructions:

  1. Step 1. First, prepare the crosspiece. Twine tied 3 or 4 rods in the shape of a cross. The twine is coated with glue. The length of the rods is chosen based on the diameter of the future seat.
  2. Step 2. The cross is wrapped in a thin rod. It should alternately be either above or below the cross bars.
  3. Step 3. Rod by rod, in the same way, a circle for sitting with a diameter of 70-90 cm is wrapped around. The last rod in the weaving is tied with twine and coated with glue.
  4. Step 4. Now you can weave the basket. The weaving of the cocoon chair is the same as the weaving of the basket, with the only difference being the weaving of the seat. The first step is to install the frame rods. They are attached to the main frame and woven seat with glue-coated twine. The frame rods are fixed at intervals of 2-2.5 cm. They form the back and the depth of the future chair.
  5. Step 5. Perpendicular to the frame rods, the main rods are threaded rod by rod. Weaving starts at the bottom. Rising upwards, the body of the chair is created. Weaving is carried out horizontally in relation to the main frame and starts from the middle of the back of the chair. The ends of the rods braid the front part of the frame from a hoop or tube. The rods are tightly pressed one to one. The ends of the last rod are pushed with an awl into the main weaving of the chair.
  6. Step 6. Ropes for suspension are mounted in the finished cocoon.

Important! The wicker cocoon chair and the egg chair do not have reliable back support, so it is good to use high, dense pillows.

How to make a hammock at home (video)

Light hammock for summer cottages

Probably everyone knows what a hammock is - a rectangular piece of fabric with wooden bars on the sides and cables for installation.

Materials:

  • a cut of dense fabric, the width and length are determined at will (a large length, more than 2 meters, will make the structure uncomfortable, the back will always fail);
  • synthetic winterizer or any other filler;
  • wooden or metal strips for side bracing (strong nylon ropes can be used);
  • ropes or cables for the hanging chair.

Manufacturing process:

  1. Step 1. A piece of fabric is folded in half. One edge must remain uneven for the curl to occur. A synthetic winterizer or other filler is laid. The cut is sewn along the edges. On both sides, you need to leave 2 large cavities in the diameter of the fasteners (strips or ropes).
  2. Step 2. Fasteners are threaded into the resulting cavities. To keep the ropes stationary, they can be sewn on a typewriter or sewn on by hand.
  3. Step 3. Holes are made in the side strips for fastening ropes or cables, they are threaded and secured with a strong knot or loop. You can grease them with glue. Side brackets are attached to one hinged bar
  4. Step 4. The structure is fixed to the ceiling.

In appearance, such a structure with a parallel attachment resembles a small hanging hammock. In order to strengthen the back, you can use a thick pillow.

In conclusion, it should be noted that safety precautions must always be followed.
