Drains for windows. Do-it-yourself installation of plastic and metal ebbs for the roof Put ebbs on the house

Low tides are responsible for collecting water from slopes and transporting it to drain points, therefore they are the most important component of any drain. Due to the large length of the gutters, their acquisition is a significant part of the cost of constructing the entire drainage system. The final price will be quite high, even if you choose inexpensive tin products. That is why every self-respecting home master should be able to make galvanized steel ebbs with his own hands. A well-run technology will not only save the budget, but also allow you to emerge victorious in a situation where gutters of non-standard sizes are required for arranging the roof.

Manufacturing technology of galvanized steel castings

Companies that manufacture galvanized steel flashings use special bending equipment. The radial bending of the workpiece is obtained due to the reorientation of internal stresses in the steel during the rolling of the sheet of metal between the rolls of the machine. Of course, for a one-time job, buying or making such a device is irrational. Therefore, at home, hand tools are used to process blanks.

In small-scale production of gutters, special bending machines are used.

Necessary tools and materials

Before you start making ebbs for the roof with your own hands, you should prepare everything you need. The first thing you need for work is, of course, galvanized steel. The industry produces sheet metal of various thicknesses, so the shape of future gutters is the selection criterion. For L-shaped or rectangular products, you can use galvanizing with a thickness of 0.5–0.7 mm - this will allow you to cope with its processing without much effort. Classic semicircular ebbs from such a material without stiffeners will be too flimsy, so for their manufacture it is better to take sheet metal with a thickness of 1 mm or more.

Galvanized sheet steel is the most suitable material for guttering

The next thing to pay attention to is the quality of the protective coating. According to the standards, the specific gravity of the zinc layer must be at least 270 g/m 2 . The retail network presents steel sheets with zinc coating from 60 to 270 g/m 2 . Be sure to clarify this point with the seller, since the difference in price will not be so big, but the durability of roofing iron can differ several times.

Polymer-coated steel sheets can also be used in the work, however, only good, high-quality material is suitable for this. It is not difficult to find out its quality - just bend the corner of the sheet at a right angle and look at the state of the protective layer. If it retains its original structure, then the coating will not crack during the molding of blanks, which means it will be perfect for the task. If the polymer layer is damaged and peels off, then you should not buy such a metal - water will flow into the cracks, and corrosion will destroy the steel very quickly.

The tool that will be needed for the manufacture of galvanized ebbs:

Since the brackets for fastening the gutters can also be made by hand, you will additionally need a structural steel tire 20–30 mm wide with a thickness of at least 2.5 mm and a steel strip 1 mm thick. Thin metal will be needed in order to make clamps. You can attach them to the holders with rivets, or using a welding machine.

Step-by-step instructions for making ebbs

  1. A strip 180–220 mm wide is cut from a sheet of galvanized steel.

    Both manual and electric tools can be used to cut galvanized sheets.

  2. Lines are drawn at a distance of 5–10 mm from each edge of the workpiece. In the future, they will be needed in order to make bends. Such a flanging not only makes the gutter more attractive, but also contributes to an increase in its rigidity.

    Flanging on the edge of the gutter will make it more rigid

    To clean the edge of a galvanized steel workpiece, you can use a plow made from a piece of a broken hacksaw blade.

  3. Using pliers, the metal is bent along the marked line at an angle of 90 o. The flanging line is aligned. To do this, the workpiece is placed on a metal corner and tapped with a mallet, bringing the angle at the bend to 130–150 o.

    To form a flanging without damaging the surface of the galvanized sheet, use a wooden mallet

  4. To make a semicircular tide, it is laid on a workbench so that the bends are directed downwards. To prevent displacement of the workpiece, it must be fixed with clamps. After that, a piece of steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm or more is laid on the edge of the sheet, which should also be fixed with clamps from the ends. Further, the workpiece is gradually bent around the template, tapping with a wooden mallet over its entire surface. After the gutter acquires the required shape, the clamps are removed and proceed to the manufacture of the next product.

    To get a semicircular gutter, use a pipe of a suitable diameter

  5. The L-shaped tide is even easier to make. To do this, find the middle of the sheet on each side and draw the center line. Bending is performed using a metal corner or a wooden slat, which is attached to the edge of the workbench. The blank is laid so that its center line is strictly above the edge of the template and is tapped with a mallet to obtain a bend at an angle of 90 o. A U-shaped gutter is formed in the same way, but two parallel lines are applied at a distance of 60–80 mm from the outer edge of the workpiece and two right angles are bent.

If, after making a semicircular gutter, its edges parted a little to the sides, it does not matter - after installation in rigid holders, the configuration will be restored.

Semicircular ebbs for the roof water drainage system can be obtained in another way - dissolve galvanized drainpipes of suitable diameter in half.

How to make drip holders

Gutter hooks can be bent from a steel bar. A metal strip with a cross section of 20x2.5 mm is suitable, since thinner metal may not be able to cope with snow and ice that accumulates in the drain in winter. If it was not possible to buy such a tire, then the holders can be cut from a steel sheet of suitable thickness. To do this, it should be marked out by drawing the required number of strips 20–30 mm wide and 400 mm long.

The configuration and length of the hooks depends on the shape of the gutter and the method of its fastening (on rafters, sheathing or frontal board).

To get a lot of the same type of holders, you need to build a special device. The bending of the C-brackets can be accelerated by welding a 50 mm ring from a Ø100 mm pipe and a vertical retainer from a Ø15 mm bar of the same length onto a metal sheet. The hook of the desired shape is obtained by clamping the steel bar in the fixture and wrapping it around the pipe. A device for the manufacture of triangular or rectangular holders can be made from wooden bars, pieces of metal corners or a profile pipe.

When making holders with your own hands, be sure to take into account their shape and size of ebbs

After the last strip is bent, 2-3 holes are drilled on the connecting parts of the brackets for fastening to the wooden roof structures. In addition, pieces of wire 3–4 mm thick or steel strips up to 1 mm thick can be welded along the edges of the curved part of the hook. They will be needed in order to fix the ebb in the holder.

After the last hook is made, the products are painted. The paint will give the details completeness and protect the metal from rust.

Installation of ebbs

Fastening of galvanized ebbs is carried out in several stages, performing work in a strict order. Only in this case can we hope that the drain will be installed at the right angle, and individual brackets will not hang in the air. Next, we will provide instructions on which to act, and now we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the list of tools needed in the work:

  • bending tool for hooks;
  • ticks;
  • angle grinder or hacksaw;
  • riveter;
  • electric drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • mallet rubber;
  • metal scissors;
  • cord;
  • roulette;
  • pencil.

The main condition for the quality work of the drain is the straightness of the gutter and compliance with the calculated slope. To mark the attachment points of the mounting brackets, it is best to use a laser level. If you don’t have such a device at hand, then you can use a simple spirit level (hydraulic level).

The order of installation of ebbs

A galvanized drain is a fairly lightweight structure, so the ebbs can be attached both to the rafter legs and to the frontal (sometimes also called the wind) board. In the first case, installation is carried out even at the stage of roof construction, before laying the roofing material. For this purpose, elongated brackets are used, which are placed on the rafter legs and fixed with self-tapping screws. Fastening in this way can only be done if the pitch of the rafters does not exceed 0.6 m.

When installing flashings, it is necessary to take into account the type of fastening, the slope and the distance from the frontal board

If the distance between the rafters exceeds 0.6 m, then the tide hooks can be installed on the bottom board of the batten.

As for the installation of brackets on the windboard, this method makes it possible to install a drain at the finishing stages of construction or as needed.

Work on the installation of galvanized ebbs with their own hands is carried out in the following order:

  1. At the far edge of the slope, the attachment point of the first holder is selected. It should be at such a height that the ebb is located as close as possible to the drip or edge of the roof. The ebb is set in such a way that the water flowing from the roof or drip does not fall on the walls, but on the bottom of the gutter.
  2. Using self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, the bracket is attached to a board or rafter.

    Flashing brackets can be attached to rafter legs or windboard

  3. Find the gutter attachment point, next to which the downpipe will be located. To do this, it is convenient to use a laser or water level, which knocks out a slope of 2-3 mm per 1 linear meter of ebb. Focusing on this line, a funnel is installed at the extreme point.
  4. Having made an indent of 15 cm from the funnel, a second bracket is installed.

    When installing the hook, not only horizontal adjustment along the tensioned cord is used, but also vertical alignment.

  5. A construction cord is pulled between the extreme holders, which will serve as a guide when installing intermediate fasteners.

    You can install the holders in one line using a cord stretched between the extreme elements

  6. Mount other holders. Homemade galvanized flashings have a standard sheet length of 2 m, so it will be convenient if you choose a distance between the brackets of 1 m. Despite the fact that some sources require hooks to be installed every 0.5–0.6 m, for such a lightweight structure as a gutter made of galvanized steel, this will be enough, especially if powerful hooks with a thickness of 2.5 mm or more are installed.

    If the brackets are installed at a distance of 1 m from each other, a standard two-meter gutter will be completely accommodated on three supports.

  7. The first ebb is laid starting from the bottom point. It is necessary to ensure that water from it does not fall into the center of the funnel, but onto its near wall. In this case, during a heavy downpour, the water will not overflow.
  8. The gutter is fixed in place, for which the edges of the holders are folded inward and pressed with tongs.
  9. Each subsequent ebb is laid on the previous one with an overlap of 7 to 10 cm.
  10. The last ebb is cut to size and laid in place. After it is fixed in the holders, an end cap is installed on its edge.

Since the home-made design does not provide for any locking and sealing elements, the junction can be additionally protected with a waterproof sealant.

The main enemy of galvanized tides are branches from trees, which can damage the protective metal layer and accelerate corrosion. To protect the gutters, their upper part is covered with gratings or mesh. Today you can find perforated protection of any type - made of plastic, steel or brass. You can fix the mesh simultaneously with the installation of the gutters, laying its edge under the grips of the brackets.

Repair of gutters made of galvanized steel

A significant disadvantage of galvanized steel gutters is that if the protective layer is damaged, the corrosion process proceeds as quickly as it does with ferrous metal. Since the thickness of such flashings most often does not exceed 0.7 mm, through rust appears on damaged areas after a few years.

To prevent the process of destruction of the metal, you should periodically inspect the ebbs and repair them. Most often, prevention is carried out twice a year - in early spring and early autumn. Areas damaged by ice or branches should be cleaned, degreased and painted over with a transparent varnish for working on metal. In areas of the drain, hidden from view, for this purpose, you can use any enamel for outdoor use.

If it was not possible to prevent the destruction of the metal and areas with through corrosion appeared on the ebb of galvanized steel, then they can be repaired. For this:

  1. The clamps of the retaining brackets are bent and the defective element of the drain is removed from the bracket.
  2. If the side wall of the gutter is rusted, then a galvanized steel patch is applied to the damaged area. To do this, a rectangle is cut from the metal sheet, which will go onto undamaged metal with an overlap of 20-30 mm, and fasten it with rivets. In order not to damage the appearance of the drain, the ebb is installed in place with the repaired side to the wall.
  3. In the case when corrosion has touched the bottom of the gutter, the leaky area is cut out entirely. To repair the ebb, use a piece of galvanized steel of the same configuration. It should be 20 cm longer than the cut out part, because when installing the patch, the part overlaps. Be sure to pay attention to how the patch will be applied. From the side of the drain funnel, it is attached over the ebb, while on the other side it should be at the bottom - this will not allow water to flow into the gap. You can fix the repair part with aluminum rivets. It will be possible to avoid water seepage if the joints are treated with a moisture-resistant sealant.

The process of making do-it-yourself galvanized steel ebbs is not difficult and is accessible even for a beginner. Since the gutters will cost the price of sheet metal, the gutter system will cost much less than the finished one, even if the remaining elements (funnels, pipes, etc.) are bought at a retail network. But that's not all. Invaluable experience with galvanized metal will come in handy in other projects. For example, in the manufacture of a functional chimney deflector, a stylish weather vane or a beautiful visor over the front door.

Ebb tides are part of the drainage system, which is necessary for a roof with any coating. The presence of these elements allows you to quickly remove moisture from the roof and prevent rotting, corrosion of the material and leakage in the structure. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to correctly select and install ebbs, taking into account the characteristics of the roofing material.

Proper installation of roof tides

Gutters connected to each other and to other elements of the drainage complex are called ebbs. They can have a triangular, rectangular or round section, which is the most common. The principle of their operation is that water flows down the surface of the roof and enters the gutters, and through them enters the drain communications. Due to this, moisture does not accumulate on the roof, which helps prevent corrosion, rotting and damage to the coating.

Roof tides are matched to the color of the roofing

The design of the ebbs always assumes the presence of connecting elements, thanks to which you can create a drain of the desired length. At the same time, the installation of the system on different types of roofs requires compliance with the technology.

When self-mounting, the following features should be considered:

  • the ebb is located with a slope towards the water intake funnel, which will ensure effective drainage of precipitation. For 1 m of pipes, a slope of 4–5 mm is required;
  • The diameter of the gutter depends on the area of the roof. For example, for a roof of 90 m 2, an element with diameters of 8 cm is required;
  • ebbs are placed 3 cm below the edge of the roof overhang. This is necessary to prevent damage to the element as a result of snow melting;
  • vertical drain pipes are placed every 5 m, and with complex roof structures, they are located at every corner;
  • the gutter is supplemented with a teardrop, which prevents drops from rebounding from the ebb in different directions.

Self-installation of low tide

The chute can be plastic or metal, but in any case, it is important to prepare tools and additional materials for work. A saw, a screwdriver and a rope, as well as self-tapping screws, will help to secure the structure. It will be possible to check the angle of inclination with a building level; special brackets are used to install ebbs.

The gutter should be located with a slope towards the funnel and the wastewater reception system

To work, you will also need all parts of the system, for example, a funnel, plugs, corners connecting the inserts. First you need to determine the location and extent of the system. Funnels are often placed at the corners of the building, where there are also vertical drainage pipes.

Ebb for the pediment of the building

The drainage elements of the roof can be different, and one of the options is the outflow of the gable. This detail is a canopy, which is considered part of the building and serves to divert water from walls and windows.

The visor is built on a crate and equipped with an ebb chute

To create such a variant of the ebb, you will need corrugated board, wooden bars 50x80 mm, roofing screws. Fastening wooden parts to each other can be done with nails and a hammer. These parts must be made of wood with a moisture content of not more than 12%, and they must also be pre-treated with an antiseptic.

The visor can be supplemented with an outflow in the form of a gutter

The complex of works on creating a gable tide involves the following actions:

  1. The angle of inclination of the rafters for the ebb should be from 20 to 45 °, and the width of this element should be from 500 to 600 mm. The bars are sawn into parts of the appropriate size and taking into account the angle of connection of the elements.
  2. From the bars, a frame for the ebb is assembled, attaching them to the roof rafters and the wall of the building with nails and anchor bolts.
  3. On top of the finished crate, a coating of corrugated board or metal tiles is mounted, overlapping about 5 cm and carefully sealing the seams.

Roofing screws are used to fasten corrugated board. In places where the structure adjoins the pediment, the wall must be fixed with the same screws with a metal corner, and the seam must be filled with sealant. This ensures the strength of the ebb and prevents moisture from entering the structure.

Installation of a plastic tide

The drainage system made of plastic is lightweight and does not load the roof, and modern products are durable. Therefore, plastic flashing is often the most budgetary and practical solution for protecting the roof from moisture accumulation.

Plastic tide is fixed on self-tapping screws

The steps for installing a plastic tide are as follows:

  1. After installing the rafters and fixing the waterproofing film, you need to pull the cord along the bottom of the slope, taking into account the necessary slope of the ebb direction.
  2. Install the brackets for the gutter on the extreme roof sheathing, which is covered with waterproofing material. Screw these elements with self-tapping screws at an equal distance from each other. The optimal step is 50–70 cm.
  3. Connect the gutter modules into a system of the required length, mount plugs at the ends. Fix the parts one by one on the brackets.

To check the tightness and correctness, you need to pour a bucket of water into the system at one of the ends and at the corner of the building and observe the movement of the liquid. If it reaches a special pipe and ditch quickly and does not accumulate in any part of the ebb, then the work has been done correctly.

Installation of metal gutters

Metal castings can be copper, aluminum or alloy steel. Such products are heavier than plastic ones and therefore require the same strong brackets. For the installation of metal systems, it is necessary to strengthen the crate in the area of fixing the brackets, and for this, boards with a section of 50x150 mm are used.

Metal reflux requires careful fixation, because it has a lot of weight

Installation of metal gutters involves the following steps:

  1. A rope is pulled along the bottom of the ramp at the desired level of the location of the drain and taking into account the slope. This is carried out before the installation of the waterproofing film, but after the completion of the rafters and the reinforcement of the batten.
  2. The elements of the drain are fastened together with rivets, and then attached to the brackets installed on the frontal roof board. The plugs are mounted on the extreme elements, pre-installing a rubber seal and supplementing the joint area with roofing sealant.
  3. The gutter with a plug is mounted in hangers. If it is planned to install a funnel, then a hole in the gutter is created in advance with a hacksaw for metal or an electric drill and a special crown of the desired diameter.
  4. After installing the ebb, a drainpipe with a funnel is attached, carefully waterproofing the joints. The system is then tested for efficiency by filling with water.

How to set the corners of the ebb of different widths

Forming a gutter on a roof of complex shape or bypassing a ledge requires connecting ebbs at the corners. In this case, it is often necessary to connect ebbs of different widths. For this purpose, special corners are used, namely internal connectors and external couplings, which can be with different angles.

External couplings will help to connect gutters of different widths at the corners of the building

The process of connecting the gutters at the corners does not differ from the fixing of straight elements. Brackets are located close to the corner, which will ensure the strength and reliability of the system. If the corner has short edges, then the place of their junction with a straight gutter is carefully waterproofed with roofing sealant.

Some manufacturers produce corners with markings for a drainpipe

A drainpipe may be located at the corner of the building and therefore a hole must be provided for installing a funnel. Using a hacksaw or a drill with a crown for metal, a hole is made on the corner joint for the gutters, but first you need to carefully measure the diameter of the funnel. There are also ready-made sets of funnels and corner gutters that do not require complex installation.

Drainage for soft roof

The roof surface covered with bituminous tiles does not allow moisture to quickly drain off and therefore drains are necessary for a soft roof. For installation, you can choose plastic models, but metal options with a polymer color coating are more durable.

Gutters are needed for soft roofs of any shape.

If plastic brackets are used, then they are fixed on the frontal board with a distance between the elements of 60 cm. Metal supports are attached to the outermost board of the crate before laying the material.

The technology involves the following steps:

  1. At one end of the edge of the crate or frontal board, a self-tapping screw is attached, an inclined line is drawn, taking into account that there is about 5 mm of slope per meter. At the end of the line, another self-tapping screw is attached and the rope is pulled.
  2. Brackets are fixed along this line at a distance of about 50–60 cm from each other. The extreme supports are mounted at a distance of 15 cm from the end of the board.
  3. When installing the gutter, the edge of the element, which is closer to the edge, is inserted into the fastening latch. Release the bracket, press a little and fix the opposite edge. From the inside, glue is applied to the corner and the gutter is quickly folded. You need to push the corner all the way. Next, the gutter with a glued corner is placed in other brackets.
  4. After that, glue is applied to the inner zone and the elements are connected. Plugs are installed on the end parts.

Roof gutters repair

As a result of snow and ice melting, heavy rains and strong gusts of wind, the gutters of the drainage system can be damaged. The most unstable to such factors are plastic structures, metal structures are more durable, but in any case, system repair may be required.

Any type of gutter can be damaged by climatic factors.

Low tides are exposed to many factors, and a violation of the functionality of the drainage system requires prompt repair. The following situations are common:

  • poor drainage is often associated with dirt, fallen leaves and debris accumulated in the gutters. It is easy to fix the problem by cleaning the system of foreign objects;
  • if a crack occurs in the gutter, then the element must be replaced. With a break over the entire surface, this part must be completely replaced. Small cracks are easily repaired by two-component cold welding;
  • if the elements of the drainage system are disconnected, then you need to clean the damaged area from dirt, remove the old fasteners and carefully connect the parts, treating the joint with a sealant;
  • rust occurs on metal products with a damaged protective layer. It can be cleaned with a sponge and covered with anti-corrosion paint. If rust has affected the entire system, then it is best to replace the ebbs;
  • deformed pipes after many years of operation are always replaced with new ones. This is necessary for plastic and metal products that have not been repaired for decades.

The integrity and proper installation of roof flashings are the key to good protection of the building from moisture. The gutter system has a simple design, but allows you to protect walls, windows and foundations from the harmful effects of water. Regular repairs are just as necessary as proper installation of gutters, as it prolongs the life of the drainage structure.

Roof tides are installed in private houses and high-rise buildings. They protect roofs from water. Due to this, roofing materials last longer. Installation of ebbs is simple, you can do it yourself. The main thing is to stick to technology.

Such a structural element, removing moisture to the right place, also protects the walls of the house with the foundation, its blind area from moisture. In winter, low tides protect the building from the formation of dangerous icicles for passers-by. Thanks to them, the roof looks finished. They may or may not stand out against the background of the structure.

What chute to buy?

To do the installation yourself, you need to buy roof tides and not only them, but the whole set of necessary materials and required tools. If you know the area of the slopes, you will get the right amount of gutter.

This is calculated using a simple formula: 1.5 m2 of the gutter will go to 1 m2 of the roof. If the roof area is 150 m, then the gutter is needed with a width of 22.5 cm. When you buy the material and tools, you can proceed with the installation.

Getting ready to install

Working with plastic products is easier than with heavier iron ones. The main thing is to understand the rule of their installation. We have already mentioned that you need to pre-purchase elements for ebb with tools. Get:

  • Gutter. You can take so much material along the length that it will be slightly less than the length of the side of the wall on which it is installed. But most buy material with a margin;
  • funnels;
  • Inserts for connection. How many joints you want to make on the gutter, so many inserts are needed. Consider the length of the wall and specifically the gutters. Inserts will protect the material from deformation. If parts for connection are not needed, then they will be useful for stiffening, purchase 2 or more inserts;
  • Will the tides be closed? Buy plugs;
  • In increments of 1 m, you will need to install brackets;
  • You will need clamps to fix the drains on the walls;
  • Pipes should be equal to the height of your house.
  • The tides on the roof and on the sides can be not only straight, then get corners to connect the pipes.

For installation of ebbs, you need the following tools:

  • Saw working on metal.
  • File;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Rope.
  • Construction level with pencils.

It is necessary to prepare a place where the water will drain. It is important that water does not cause inconvenience, which means making them so that water does not flood the lawn with sidewalks. The liquid should not fall on the foundation, otherwise, it can gradually wash it away. On purpose, you can make a storm sewer or just dig a shallow ditch that will drain water. Some install a barrel, but the water will need to be drained regularly.

We independently make installation of ebbs

Before installing the drainage system, it is required to dig wells where the discharged water will fall. It happens that they are not in the project, then organize the spillway so that the water does not flood the sidewalks or the area that you planted.

We fix the drains correctly

Let's consider in detail how to properly fix the drainage systems:

  • The brackets are fixed in different ways: with frontal boards to the crate or rafter legs to it. How firmly you insert the hooks on the roof depends on their reliability. These fasteners need to be done before you design the roof with a coating. Brackets are suitable both short with extensions and long. Hooks for fasteners have plates, they are bent at the right angle.
  • Requires initial installation of end brackets. Be sure to set the tides at the desired slope. Fix them with screws. 2 are enough for each.
  • A cord is pulled between the extreme brackets. This is a guide along which line to insert hooks for fasteners;

Brackets are installed on the sides of the funnels. Step for installing fasteners - 2 cm.

Now consider the installation of gutters:

  • Its parts must be fastened with an overlap or butt. The joints are closed with overlays, specially provided for this;
  • If you have chosen plastic gutters. So you do not need to collect them immediately. On the pad located below, apply a special adhesive in composition. Now the parts need to be fixed at the junction of our gutters.
  • In plastic gutters, the plugs located at the ends must be put on glue. If the material is galvanized, then bend the edges and place a plug there. Now return the edge that was bent back to its place.
  • Holes are made on galvanized in the required places. From the bottom and up you need to move the funnel and snap it into place.
  • When you mount the flashings on a plastic roof, first fold the parts, then insert the gutter elements.

Important. Glue is not required for this installation.

Consider the steps on how to install ebbs:

  • The 1st knee must be fixed at the bottom of the funnel;
  • Segment, which is placed vertically, fix the connection 1st with the lower elbow;
  • Lower knee;
  • The element that performs the retraction.

The drainpipe needs to be fixed with fasteners. Before that, they are securely attached to the wall. Clamps give the structure reliability. They are installed under parts of the pipe. Take 2 for each of them.

Consider the advice given by the masters who want to install the drainage pipes on their own:

  • Install gutter caps prior to installation.
  • Bend the edge of the gutter down and the water will smoothly descend into the funnel.
  • It happens that you need to bend the plastic. Preheat it over a burning match or candle. If you need to bend metal, then use pliers.
  • The ebbs are cut with a hacksaw, which cuts metal.
  • There may be burrs in plastic products, cut them off with a knife. Grind metal burrs with a file.
  • If you install galvanized ebbs, then you need to apply an anti-corrosion compound to the places of the cuts.

The assembled chute is fixed in holders. The installed drain must be checked to see if it has the correct slope. How to do it? Run water on it.

Everything is okay? Install drain pipes. Start installation from above, near the funnel. Given how far the pipe is from the wall. You can immediately insert it into the funnel or when it is at a distance, use a knee to connect.

Pipes have a standard length of 2 m. Calculate the required amount. Buy with a margin.

You have learned the technology of installing downpipes and now you know how to do it. If you have experience in construction work, buy the necessary materials with the missing tools and proceed with the installation.

Having used growing modern materials for the construction of the roof, it is necessary to do everything possible to extend the duration of their operation. If you follow the recommendations of manufacturers and do not neglect the installation of auxiliary devices, then a high-quality roof will last for several decades.

Such related devices include roof drainage systems, which ensure the prompt removal of water flows from the slopes during rains and snow melting. Installation of these elements of the drainage system is a simple operation that can and should be done with your own hands.

Drainage device

Roof drains are round, rectangular or, in exceptional cases, triangular sections into which water flows from the roof slopes. For some homeowners, their installation seems redundant, because the roof is specially designed in such a way that precipitation is transferred by gravity from the ridge to the edges of the overhang. However, without a drain tide, the flowing moisture does not have a directed movement, but pours out randomly, endangering the finishing of the facades of the house, penetrating into the junctions of the roof with the walls, destroying the blind area.

The optimal cross-sectional shape of the roof flashing is rounded, since this configuration does not have hard-to-reach corners that become clogged with dirt or debris, which increases the period between cleaning the house's gutter system.

If the installation of low tides is not done, the unorganized, spontaneous flow of water from the slopes leads to the formation of puddles around the house, where paths are usually placed. The organization of a well-functioning drainage system with your own hands solves all of the above problems, and also saves natural resources by collecting and using melt and rain water for irrigation. It is important that modern models of various colors and compositions, matched to the tone of the facade or roofing material, do not spoil, but decorate the architecture of the building.

Types of drain tides

Previously, when mass production of gutters at affordable prices had not yet been established, it was necessary to make drainage pipes with your own hands, adapting pipes cut in half. Now hardware stores offer the widest range of all possible colors, shapes and materials with suitable fittings, which can be installed by hand in a matter of hours. The most popular models of drainage systems are:

A common property of metal drainage systems is a high resonant ability, which increases the noise level from falling drops to an annoying level, in order to eliminate this defect, galvanized models are provided with a polymer coating that dampens loud sound.

Installation rules

In order for the installation of the drainage system not to be in vain, it is necessary to follow the correct technology. Work is carried out in accordance with the following rules:

To calculate how many meters of low tide are required, calculate the perimeter of the structure and add 10-15% to it for trimming and overlapping at the joints. When choosing a gutter, remember that it is necessary to match brackets, funnels and downpipes from a similar material to it.

Installation order

It was wrong to say that the installation of ebbs begins after the erection of the roof. In fact, it is preferable to fix the brackets to the rafters before laying the waterproofing film. An exception to this rule is the situation when the roof does not have an overhang or its size is small, then the ebb can be fixed on a cornice board or wall. In other cases, do-it-yourself roof tides are installed in the following order:

After completion of work, it is necessary to check the operation of the gutter ebbs. A few meters away, a bucket of water is poured out and the movement is observed. If the liquid is glassed into the gutter, and from there into the downpipe without loss, then the work is done without errors.

Video instruction

Roof tides are a necessary element that can protect it from water and extend the life of the building. Installation of these simple devices does not take much time, and you can do it yourself; To do this, you only need to follow the instructions and stock up on everything you need.

The main task of this structural element is to remove moisture in the right direction. Thanks to the ebbs, the blind area of the house will last longer, and the foundation and walls will not gain excess moisture. In winter, icicles will not form, which, when falling from a height, can cause serious injury to people below. In the presence of ebbs, the task takes on a complete look. They can serve as an element of decoration or, on the contrary, be invisible.

What kind of gutter do you need?

Before you make ebbs on the roof with your own hands , it is necessary to purchase all the necessary materials. It is better to buy a complete set at once. It will be necessary to carry out calculations: you need to find out the area of the slope, and the diameter of the gutter is also chosen relative to this. The formula is simple: 1 sq. m roof requires 1.5 square meters. see gutters. For example, if the roof area is 100 meters, you will need a gutter 15 cm wide.

Installation preparations

Installation of the ebb on the roof must begin with the preparation of the necessary tools and structural elements. It will be most convenient to mount plastic parts. You will need to purchase the following items:

  • Gutter: the length should be slightly less than the size of the side on which it is mounted. Just in case, you can buy a little more material.
  • Funnels.
  • Connecting inserts: you will need as many of them as the joints in the gutter are planned. This is influenced by the length of the gutters purchased and the roof line. The insert also helps to avoid deformation of the gutter. It can be used as a stiffener, so if you do not need to connect elements, you still need to buy several inserts.
  • If you do not plan to make closed ebbs for the house , you need to buy plugs.
  • Brackets for ebbs: you will need one for every meter of construction.
  • Clamps for fixing the drain on the wall .
  • A pipe for a drain equal to the height of the house.

Roof drain , if it is not straight, it must have corner connectors.

What tools are needed?

Installing roof tides will require the following tools at hand:

  • Screwdriver.
  • File.
  • Metal file.
  • Pencils and building level.
  • Rope.

The place where the water will drain from the roof is prepared in advance. It is chosen so that moisture does not create inconvenience: for example, drains should not flood the sidewalk or plants planted in the yard. Water should not have access to the foundation to wash it away: you can also get rid of this with the help of storm sewers. If not, punch a groove to drain water. You can install a barrel, but over time, the water will need to be drained somewhere.

Sequence of work

Do-it-yourself installation of ebbs on the roof begins with marking. To do this, you need to determine where the ebb will be attached. Install the funnel first. Focusing on it, you can draw a center line, which will become a guide for the rest of the work. Holders are placed on both sides of the funnel, stepping back from it 15 cm.

It is necessary to install the funnel in such a way that the water does not fall into its center, but to the edge. This trick is useful for heavy rainfall. If water enters the center, it will overflow over the edge of the structure. The gutter must have a certain slope. This is difficult for a beginner to achieve at first. For one meter of construction, the slope should be about 3 mm: it is necessary so that liquid does not accumulate in the gutter.

Before installing roof drains , you need to mark the slope of the gutter. This will require a long board and a building level. Use one of the edges of the holder that will already be installed. Draw a zero line: it should go to the place where the next funnel holder will be attached.

How to fix the gutter

After the fasteners are installed, the installation of roof tides for the roof with your own hands proceeds to the stage of attaching water gutters. To begin with, they will need to be adjusted in length. Pieces of the part must be placed in the mounts, not forgetting to leave room for the connecting inserts. Their size can be measured in advance, usually leave about 10 centimeters.

If the gutter is too long, it can be shortened; you will need to use a hacksaw. The cut area is cleaned with a file. In order to make your work easier, put a cap on the end of the pipe immediately while standing on the ground. It's pretty hard to do this in weight. You can connect the individual parts of the gutter using inserts. For convenience, they have special marks.

After assembling the gutter, it must be fixed on the holders, then check if the required slope is present. To do this, it is not necessary to take measurements, just pour a little water into the gutter and see if it will flow out or stay in place. If fluid does not flow out, the incline must be increased.

After it was possible to correctly install the ebbs on the roof , you can proceed to the installation of the downpipe. Work starts from the funnel. If the length allows, the pipe can be immediately connected to it, otherwise, you will have to install a knee: it will help to avoid splashes and make water drain into the pipe.

Usually pipes have a length of 2 meters. You will have to calculate how much material and connecting elements are required. Do it ahead of time.

Mounting holders

What other materials can be used?

Do-it-yourself ebbs do not have to be made from plastic or metal elements made specifically for this. A good owner can save money and make the necessary items on his own. To do this, you will need to find suitable strips of galvanizing or any pipe of a suitable diameter that can be sawn along. It is most convenient to work with a plastic pipe, you can use a metal one. Asbestos pipes are not suitable: they crumble when you try to cut them and have a large mass.

Mounting options for roof tides can also be different. It is quite possible to make them yourself. The main thing is to comply with the following rule: the roof should fall approximately in the middle of the gutter or closer to its inner part. The slope must be at least 3 mm per meter of structure.

Conclusion : roof drain installation a simple procedure that an amateur can handle by thoroughly studying the theory and preparing the necessary tools.
