Table made from a sewing machine bed. From an old sewing machine

I remember when I was a child, my grandmother had a special table in her house - a Singer sewing machine. It was wooden on top, and a sewing machine was folded upside down under the tabletop, plus two openwork legs made of cast iron, a wheel on the side and a wide pedal at the bottom... I first learned to sew on just such a machine. It was later that electric units appeared - more compact and modern, and, alas, no one needed such tables.

However, do not rush to throw such a rarity into the trash. A little time and imagination - and old table from under sewing machine can be transformed into quite unusual interior items. Here are some interesting ideas for inspiration.

2. A modern table for a computer or laptop is also a completely worthy metamorphosis for such a table. The so-called eclecticism. If you use a glass tabletop, then such a table will fit even into a high-tech interior.

3. Just a few touches - and it turned out quite well desk for creative people.

4. Perhaps the most elegant idea is a dressing table. The hinged lid can accommodate a mirror, and drawers store cosmetics and small items.

5. A washbasin made from an old sewing machine in the bathroom or in the country house? Incredible idea! But it is very original.

6. Replacing the countertop instantly changes the shape of an old heirloom. This coffee table It’s simply unrecognizable in the living room!

7. Look how good these openwork legs from a Singer machine look in vintage or shabby chic interiors. I would love to turn my grandmother's old table into a console for a vase of flowers. You just need to replace the countertop and repaint the cast iron legs.

Painting a sewing machine near Zhostovo

One day, an antique Singer sewing machine, in almost working condition, “floated” into my raking hands.

Original ideas for using an old sewing machine in interior decor

The functionality of the sewing machine was restored to 95% by me, after about three days of persistent tinkering with the mechanical part, after which it began to sew perfectly. The only thing I wasn’t happy with was its appearance: the stand was dry and wobbly on all its tenon joints, the paint on the body was chipped and worn off in many places, chrome parts scratched.

This is what the Singer sewing machine looked like before my creative intervention (the mechanics were removed). Throughout the body there is a certain angular monogram ornament of the Art Nouveau style. In general, the ornament is built in “Ra-symbolism”: the sun, the sphinx, lotuses, wings - stylized in the Egyptian style.

I thought about it for a little while, about a month or two, and decided to give my Singer a look worthy of its status.

Preparation for painting was difficult and lengthy. I immediately gave the stand to carpenters I knew, who immediately broke it down, sanded it efficiently and reassembled it. It turned out that the stand was made of mahogany, nothing else. I planned to simply paint the stand in a more dark color, tint with stain, however, when I covered the wood with one layer of varnish, I realized that the color was already perfect without tinting.

The machine itself took a long time to scrape down to bare metal. All old paint it had to be removed along with the soil. Several types of sandpaper, knives and an awl were used for the most microscopic parts and holes.

When the metal was completely free of paint, I wiped it with acetone and applied two coats of automotive acrylic primer from a can. Each layer of soil was lightly sanded very carefully with fine sandpaper. In the next photo, the body of the machine and all its other spare parts are already covered with soil. In order not to splatter the chrome and other parts that do not require painting, I sealed them partly with masking tape and partly with electrical tape.

It is best to paint on metal, even over a primer. oil paints, and not on turpentine, but on a tee: oil, turpentine, varnish. Stylistically, the traditional Zhostovo painting on trays, where lush buds of a flower bouquet seem to emerge from a dark background, was most suitable for the surface and character of the product.

The first attempt at painting was unsuccessful. The next photo shows the original underpainting, which was washed off the next day because it was not what I wanted.

But this is what you need.

And almost the same floral ornament on a stand, but with some differences.

Gilding has already been added to the painting on the stand. Zhostovo, although it uses gold in painting, is not in the quantities that I used. By the way, my gold is gold powder mixed with acrylic varnish. Let's add gold decorations to the ornament on the body.

Close-up:

After the painting had completely dried, the car was covered with three layers of automotive acrylic varnish of the same series as the primer. Each layer of varnish, except the last one, was carefully cleaned with zero sandpaper(“null”) in the presence of water (wet sandpaper).

The stand is coated with PF varnish in the standard way for wood.

The photos show a brand new assembled Singer. It's like it came off an assembly line this morning.

Well, that's all. My Singer sewing machine is painted in an imitation of the Zhostovo style. The program is at most 100 percent completed. The result, to be honest, exceeded my expectations.

What is further fate sewing machine?

I don’t know yet, but most likely I will sell it.

This “love story” began a long time ago, a couple of years ago. Once upon a time I had a job, thanks to which I visited almost all the restaurants in the center of Kyiv. In one very cozy establishment, I noticed that all the tables were made from old Singer sewing machines. I really remember this idea. And it lay in my head until the next meeting with a similar table, which took place in the city of Drogobich (Lviv region). Walking around the city, I went into a clothing store self made. It was very nice there. A lot of different very stylish and unusual things and again... a table made from a sewing machine... Then this idea was already firmly stuck in my head, and besides, I infected my husband Kostya with it.

The search for the machine began, which, fortunately, did not last long. My great-aunt invited us to pick up her old sewing machine, which had been lying in her dacha for a long time. A lot of time passed before we transported this “treasure” from Vinnitsa to Kyiv, then another six months until we were ready to implement this idea. And we made the table itself in just 5 days and just fell in love with it!

How did we make it?

Step 1

We dismantled the table, threw out the completely outdated tabletop and other parts from the machine. True, they left a box (we put it in it). All parts were washed in the shower stall and cleaned of century-old deposits with a metal brush.

Step 2

Painting the legs. Kostya took everything metal parts into the garage and painted them, hanging them on a wire.

We painted it with wear-resistant 4 in 1 paint. The result was a very beautiful matte finish.

Step 3

Bought pine furniture board. Dimensions: 100 x 60 x 1.8 cm.

For painting, we chose “Pinotex Interior” transparent paint and tinted it purple-burgundy. This color fits right in with the color palette we decided on for the room. In addition, it is dark enough so as not to distract or irritate your eyes while working.

We decided to cover the tree with a roller, since it applies the paint more evenly than a brush and does not leave streaks or grooves behind.

We painted the tabletop three times. We waited 2-3 hours between coats, although this paint dries almost instantly. The peculiarity of “Pinotex Interior” is that it does not leave a greasy layer, but is completely absorbed into the wood, since it is water based. That is, the effect is similar to stain, but this paint, in addition to tinting, also protects the wood.

This is the velvety effect obtained after a three-layer coating. But we decided to cover the tabletop with acrylic varnish for reliability, since this table made from a sewing machine will be a full-fledged one computer desk, with which we will sometimes drink tea or coffee :) We were not sure that “Pinotex” would react favorably to spilled coffee. And the varnish will definitely hold up.

Step 4

Varnishing. Why did we choose acrylic varnish? Firstly, because there is a child in the house, and even if you cover the tabletop oil varnish in the garage, you will have to wait some time until the unpleasant toxic smell disappears. Acrylic varnish is absolutely non-toxic. Secondly, it dries quickly and you can start attaching the tabletop on the same day. Thirdly, this varnish can be applied in a very thin, invisible layer, which was to our advantage, because we still wanted to preserve the velvety quality.

During painting, the varnish has a white tint, but then this effect disappears and the layer becomes completely transparent.

Step 5

Marking the table for fastenings. We did it using masking tape, so as not to stain the paint layer with a pencil (or something worse :)). Everything was measured and the location of the legs was determined.

We installed the tabletop in the right place.

Ksenia actively helped :)

In the holes on the legs through which it was attached old table top, put marks. They will be clearly visible on the tape. Drill holes for furniture nuts according to the marks.

After the holes are ready, you need to drive furniture nuts into them.

You can also play with the nuts: scatter them throughout the apartment, and then collect them together as a family. This activity is suitable for taking a little break from the hard work of creating a table from a sewing machine :)

We attach the tabletop to the legs and the table is ready! This is what Kostino’s workplace looks like now. True, now we have to fight for the opportunity to sit at a computer desk, because we only have one graphics tablet, but we really want to draw on it :)))

A ficus also joined this love story and, in my opinion, it was very successful.

Now a modest Soviet chair awaits modifications. He will become a laconic addition to the male workplace. But that is another story…
