The rather difficult task of optimal placement of kitchen utensils can be solved by installing roof rails in the kitchen. Railing is most often a fairly strong straight or curved tube fixed at a short distance from a wall or ceiling. Objects necessary for cooking or other kitchen work are hung on this tube (directly or with the help of additional devices). You can hang, for example, pans, pots, knives, spatulas, pouring spoons, ladles, skimmers and much more on the rail.

Railing is a pipe fixed at a short distance from a wall or ceiling.

The main types of roof rails

The most common version of the rail is a not very thick chrome-plated steel tube, fixed to the wall surface with the help of racks with holes and equipped with additional elements designed to hang the necessary items. These can be hooks, wire loops, nets, meshes or rings for plates, bottles or glassware, towel clips, even a notebook or prescription book holder.

Depending on the mounting option and design, the roof rails can be:

  • horizontal, straight or curved;
  • suspended, fixed to the ceiling on thin rods;
  • vertical, located above the working surfaces of the tables;
  • combined, consisting of horizontal and vertical sections;
  • specialized, for example, magnetic.

Horizontal roof rails are the most common. They are usually mounted near hot plates, ovens, between cabinet walls, or above the surface of cutting tables. These roof rails can be used both as a single system and as separate sections located in the required places. In addition, they can be installed in corner areas between walls or cabinets.

Hanging rails are installed in the free zone of the kitchen so that the items of kitchen utensils hung on them do not interfere with free movement. Often hinged rails are installed above the bar and equipped with holders for glasses, mugs and bottles. You can hang napkins or towels on them.

The vertical rail allows you to save space above the worktop of the table; it can be installed not only on the wall, but also on the side surfaces of kitchen cabinets. In the absence of a sufficient amount of free space in the kitchen, combined structures are also used, including both horizontal and vertical elements.

Specialized roof rails are usually designed for some kind of kitchen utensils. It can be a railing with a basket (for detergents), magnetic (for knives, forks or spoons, etc.).

Most often, for the manufacture of roof rails, as well as fasteners and attachments to it, steel with a polished chrome or nickel surface is used. However, at the request of the customer, the type of coating can be different, for example, for silver, gold or copper, including various patterns and combinations of shades.

To install the railing with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • drill with drills;
  • level gauge;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • hex wrench;
  • screws and dowels.

Choosing a place and installing railing

The place for installing the railing is selected based on the location of kitchen furniture, the functionality of individual elements and ease of use. The length of the supporting steel tube of the roof railing, regardless of the shape and options for its location, is limited only by the size of the room, the required free space and, of course, by aesthetic preferences.

The standard length of the rail is 3 m, but if necessary, it can be shortened or extended using special couplings and inserts. The ends of the pipe are closed with decorative plugs to ensure safety of use and give the structure a finished look.

After the initial preliminary marking of the location, determining the length, number and shape of the roof rails, we install the supporting structures, which will be the basis for attaching the pipes to the load-bearing wall, ceiling or furniture walls in the kitchen.

It should be borne in mind that the installation pitch of the railing fastening elements should not exceed 0.5 m, that is, if a 1 meter long pipe is installed, then the number of its attachment points to the bearing surface should be at least 3, 2 - at the edges and 1 - in the middle parts.

The markings for the installation of a horizontal or vertical railing should be carried out using a building level or a plumb line at the height required for hanging objects. When marking, take into account the size and weight of the kitchen utensils to be hung on the rail and, accordingly, additional holders. If you intend to use a railing for massive objects, then the fastening step should be reduced.

Drilling holes for installing the roof rail

As a rule, the walls of the kitchen are finished with tiles, which are laid on a concrete base. In this regard, the drilling of holes for the railing holders must be done with a special drill with a victorious tip or diamond dusting using an electric drill or perforator drill.

After the final marking of the fastening points of the railing supports, “crosses” with a side length of 5-6 mm are applied to the surface of the tile at the drilling points using a diamond glass cutter. In this case, when drilling, the tile will not crack, the hole will be located at the required point.

To install a thin railing with a relatively low mechanical load on it, you can use a drill with a diameter of 5 mm to drill holes. If it is necessary to provide large loads, it is necessary to use drills with a diameter of 8 mm or more. The depth of the holes is determined by the length of the self-tapping screws and the length of the plastic inserts into which the fixing screws will be screwed.

After the holes for attaching the railing posts have been drilled, standard plastic plugs are inserted into them, the length of which corresponds to the length of the fastening screws. With their help, it is necessary to fasten the supports. Self-tapping screws to the ceiling, walls of the room or walls of furniture, according to the marking, are fixed intermediate fastening pins (for fastening the bearing racks).

Care must be taken to ensure that the screws are tightened all the way and that the installation of the bearing pins is carried out without backlash and distortions.

The railing racks are put on the bearing pins and fixed to them using screws with a figured head. During installation, make sure that the screw heads are not conspicuous. For example, on a horizontal railing, they should be located at the bottom of the rack, and on a vertical one - either on the top or on the bottom of the racks (depending on the height of the attachment points).

Installing the railing tube on the supports

The racks or supports have special holes through which the railing tube must be passed. The ends of the tube should be as symmetrical as possible with respect to the uprights; during installation, you should also avoid large forces and try not to damage the polished surface of the railing. The final fixation of the tube in the holes of the racks is carried out with additional screws included in the delivery set of the railing. The ends of the tube are closed with a special plug, which consists of a plastic plug with a chrome-plated tip attached to the plug with a screw. The plastic plug of the plug must be assembled, then with light blows of a wooden or rubber mallet, hammer into the end of the railing pipe.

The final stage of installing the roof rack in the kitchen is the installation of the required number of hooks, support bars, nets, hinges, special holders or rings on the supporting pipe. After that, you can start hanging and placing various items of kitchen utensils.

There are a lot of fixtures that help you organize your kitchen space. And the most favorite of them is the metal rail. From the moment of his appearance, the hostesses sighed calmly - now there is always a place for kitchen utensils. The railing is especially convenient for small rooms where it is difficult to place spacious wardrobes. Therefore, some of the things can be safely hung on the railing. Installing the railing is quite simple, as you will see further.

Railing is a metal structure in the form of a pipe that is attached to the wall. Various accessories - holders are hung on the pipe. It is ideal for storing various things. The rails can be used to hang kitchen utensils, holders for oils and spices, towels, boards and much more.

Roof rails can be of several types:

  • horizontal;
  • vertical;
  • suspended;
  • magnetic.

Horizontal roof rails are the most popular and common design. They are mounted horizontally to the wall and usually run along the work area between the table and wall cabinets.

Important: in small kitchens, you can run a horizontal rail along all walls. On such a railing, you can place most of the things that should be at hand. On the walls opposite the working area, the roof rails should be at such a height that they do not touch them when driving.

Magnetic roof rails serve as a modification of the horizontal one. They are designed to hold metal objects without hooks. They don't need accessories - they usually carry knives and cutlery. The installation of such roof rails is carried out above the work table at the hostess's hand.

Vertical rails are attached in the area of the bar counter or as a separate structure for storing things. It connects the ceiling and shelves, countertops, or stretches to the floor. Various accessories are hung on it - holders for bottles, glasses, cups, hanging shelves.

Installation of wall rails is ideal in large kitchens where the work area is made in the form of an island. These roof rails are fastened to the ceiling. Any accessories are hung on it.

Which rail to choose is decided individually, depending on the design of the room, its area and personal preferences.

pros

These simple metal structures in the kitchen have a huge number of advantages.

They are convenient because:

  • all things are at hand in a conspicuous place;
  • you can swap them, organizing a comfortable space;
  • free space in the table and in cabinets for storing other things;
  • the space in the kitchen ceases to look cluttered, order is created;
  • easy to care for.

You can zone the space with roof rails, organizing different work zones. On the rail along the sink, you can install accessories for soap, detergents, and a towel. On a horizontal rail along the working area there are accessories-holders for cutlery, spices and butter, and on a magnetic one - knives. You can hang pots on the vertical rail between the stove and the wall.

Types of accessories

Before placing the railing, you need to decide what accessories are available for them. And a great many of them have been invented.

Currently available for purchase:

  • shelves;
  • towel holders;
  • containers for bottles;
  • containers for spices;
  • dryers for plates and cups;
  • containers for spoons;
  • hanging hooks;
  • bread bins;
  • baskets.

Accessories in the kitchen can be swapped, removed.

Manufacturing material

The material for the manufacture of the railing is always metal - steel. But it can be coated with various other types of alloys: chrome, brass, alloys that imitate gold or silver.

Recently, designer types of roof rails have appeared - covered with leather or glass with lighting. It must be said that leather-covered roof rails are completely impractical and non-functional and are more suitable for creating pictures for interior magazines than for real work kitchens where food is prepared.

At what height to hang

The choice of the height at which to install the railing is selected based on the height of the one who works in the kitchen most often. Typically, the standard installation height is at eye level. Before installation, you need to roughly determine this distance and make marks on the wall.

Installation rules

Installing the railing is quite simple - and it doesn't matter which type the choice fell on. The fastening rules are almost always the same. So how to do it:

  1. make marks on the wall at the points of fastening of the fasteners - in order to position the railing strictly horizontally, it is better to use a level;
  2. put the holders on the pipe and fix with screws, which should be at the bottom;
  3. drill holes in the wall;
  4. attach the railing with fasteners;
  5. put caps on the edges.

Important: Fasteners are selected depending on the type of wall material in the kitchen. The fastening must be strong - if the length of the roof railing is 100 cm or more, it must be attached to the wall in 3-4 places.

For more than 20 years in many kitchens you can see elegant roof rails, often replacing bulky wall and drying cabinets, and sometimes functioning in conjunction with them.

At first, roof rails seemed exotic, available only to people with high incomes, and then gradually became an everyday element of kitchen design.

What are roof rails, what they are, how to choose and install them correctly - you will learn about this in this article.

Why do we need roof rails

Reiling in translation from English means - a crossbar, which reflects the essence of the entire system. That is, the railing system consists of several tubes with holders for dishes and shelves that are attached to the wall.

It is convenient to store dishes on the system, which should be at hand all the time: ladles, measuring glasses, a colander, a pasta spoon, textiles. All this is very convenient, because if you need to take something during the cooking process, you just need to reach out.

There are several types of roof rails

1. Traditional and most common - horizontal. They can be arranged in a row or section over section. Shelves and containers are located on hooks.

2.Vertical systems can be installed on the side of a cabinet or on the wall between the floor and ceiling. Shelves are most often installed on this system.

3. Suspension systems suspended from the ceiling. Usually hostesses of very spacious kitchens with an island-working area in the center come to this decision.

How to choose

The first thing to start from when choosing a railing system is the size of the kitchen. If the room is small, then there is little scope for the system. A few short pipes near the sink, next to the stove and under the cabinets will perfectly relieve the work space and bring maximum benefit.

If the kitchen is larger, then you can purchase a pipe about a meter long and hang many more auxiliary structures on it.

For the functional arrangement of very large kitchens, it is better to invite a professional designer to compose the system individually - perhaps even over several zones.

On sale you can find tubes of different diameters, lengths and even colors. Holders and plugs can be selected in modern or retro style, even hooks from different manufacturers differ.

It all depends solely on the preferences of the hostess. If the interior is decorated in a high-tech style, then a chrome railing or matt nickel will perfectly fit into it, white or gold-plated systems are suitable for classic styles, for a retro look it is better to choose a system for antique bronze or antique copper. There are even black systems for special aesthetes who prefer minimalism or modernity.

Installation

When choosing the location of the roof rack in the kitchen, you must take into account its configuration. Standard Recommendations - roof rails are very convenient in the sink area and in the kitchen working area.

The tube is fixed at a height of 40-50 cm from the table top, and if there are cabinets on top, then you need to retreat from its bottom by 5-7 cm. Stainless steel tubes are more durable than aluminum tubes, so the holders on them can be located at a distance of up to 70 cm from each other.

If the roof rails are aluminum, then the holders must be fastened at a distance of no more than half a meter from each other. If the side of the hanging or base cabinet does not rest against the wall or kitchen appliances, it can also be used to install a short rail.

  • When choosing attachments, always place those that you use more often closer to the work area.
  • Potholders, electric lighters, shelves with spices, holders for ladles, spatulas for cutlets, spaghetti spoons, cooking tongs, and spatulas for wogs will look harmonious near the stove. You don't need to hang anything directly above the stove so that the dishes do not splatter with grease, but on the side - that's it. You can hang a lid holder near the stove.
  • The sink needs holders for towels, drying, sponge shelves, hooks for brushes.
  • It is better to store wooden cutting boards on hinged shelves - they dry out faster.
  • For those who often use foil or wrapping film in rolls, there are also special holders with teeth on sale, which allow you to quickly and evenly tear off the desired length.
  • Above the work surface there is a convenient place for a knife holder.
  • The glass holder can be hung over the bar counter or in a separate place.

Roof railing systems are equally well attached both to the wall and to tiles or other material. The only material to which the railing cannot be fixed is a tempered glass apron.

In this case, it is necessary to provide for the need to install the roof railing before ordering the apron. The fact is that tempered glass does not lend itself to any processing after its manufacture.

Installation instructions for roof rails

  1. Fasteners usually come complete with holders. To attach the holders, you need to mark the wall with a pencil using a level and mark the places where they will be located.
  2. In these places, holes with a diameter of 6-8 mm should be drilled to install a plastic dowel. A drill is selected depending on the wall material or finish.
  3. A self-tapping screw is screwed through the sleeve. Then the holder is put on the sleeve. The holder is fixed to the sleeve with small screws. Check in advance that the screws are at the bottom after installation - this way they will be less noticeable.
  4. After that, you can install the rail itself. Look in advance what hooks you purchased - if they are closed, then you need to put them on before installing the pipe. Corner legs are attached to connectors that combine straight and corner legs.
  5. Make sure that the same distance is left on each side of the holder. The pipes are also fixed to the holders with small screws.
  6. After that, we install the plugs and we can hang the attachments. If the tube needs to be shortened, it can be cut with a metal hacksaw.

You can assemble a railing system in a small kitchen in half an hour with your own hands. No special tools are required for this. However, there are systems that are more difficult to install - for example, recently, backlit roof railing systems have appeared on the market. The main task of backlighting is not so much to illuminate the work surface, but to emphasize the beauty of the kitchen interior with a fancy play of light.
