What is it for?

Boxes can be used for the following purposes:

  • as organizers (for example, sort documents and so on);
  • put things in them that are not used every day (for example, New Year's toys);
  • as gift packaging (to give gifts in them for which factory packaging is not provided).

Most often, hard packaging is used for shoes that have already been worn out and disposed of, household appliances, and so on. By and large, any packaging can be used. But to make everything look neat and orderly, the box should be decorated.

The simplest and most budget-friendly way to decorate is to cover the box with paper. And there are a lot of options and methods.

What paper is suitable for lining a box?

To transform a cardboard box, you can take absolutely any paper. Anything suitable for this purpose:

  • colored paper;
  • gift;
  • paper for decoupage and crafting;
  • self-adhesive paper;
  • wallpaper (vinyl, paper, non-woven, textile, etc.);
  • napkins and much more.

What tools and materials are still needed?

In addition to paper and the cardboard box itself, you need the following tools and materials:

  • scissors and/or ;
  • ruler;
  • pencil.

Depending on the type of paper you will use to decorate the boxes, you will need to stock up on:

  • double tape;
  • PVA glue;
  • glue gun;
  • (sometimes depends on their type);
  • glue brush.

The easiest way

A master class showing how to cover a box with paper can be seen in the photo provided.

  1. Unroll the paper roll and place your box on it.
  2. Measure how much material you need so that it completely covers the bottom of the box, its walls and bends slightly inward (Illustration 1). This can also be done using a ruler. To do this, measure the height and width of the box and measure on the sheet a length equal to these parameters plus another width and plus six to ten centimeters for the bend.
  3. Cut out the desired piece of paper (Illustration 2).
  4. Place the box in the center of the cut out piece of paper and cut out the excess pieces at the corners (Illustration 3).
  5. Cut four small pieces of paper and glue them to the corners of the box (Illustration 4).
  6. Now coat the walls with glue and glue the paper (Illustration 5).
  7. Coat the inside of the box and wrap the paper (Illustration 6).
  8. Cover the lid in the same way.
  9. Let the box dry.

All is ready! Now you can use the box as you wish.

Tip: Don't use too much glue or the paper may warp and ruin the whole look.

The second way to decorate with paper

Here is another instruction on how to cover a box with paper:

  1. Place the bottom of the box on the selected paper and trace it (Illustration 1).
  2. Cut out the bottom piece so that there is a margin of two to three centimeters on each side (Illustration 2).
  3. Glue the part to the bottom of the box and fold up the protruding edges (illustrations 3 and 4).
  4. Place one side on the paper and outline it. Cut out the part with a margin of a few centimeters on all sides. Glue the paper to one of the sides (illustrations 5 and 6).
  5. Carefully fold the edges of the paper (to the bottom, to the sides and inward). If necessary, make small cuts (Figure 7).
  6. Cover all sides of the box in the same way (Illustrations 8 and 9).
  7. You can paint the inside of the boxes with a suitable color paint. It is better to use acrylic (Illustration 10).
  8. Let the glue and paint dry completely.

The decorated box is ready!

Decoupage technique for decorating cardboard packaging

Some people are in a hurry to throw away not only shoes, boots and other footwear that they have taken down, but also the box from under it. But if you cover a shoebox with paper, it will be transformed and become an irreplaceable thing. It can be used as a box or a place to store various little things that tend to get lost.

The master class will show you how to cover a box with paper in:

  1. Take a clean shoebox and remove tape and other stickers from it.
  2. Take two shades of paint (preferably acrylic) and cover the sides and lid of your box. Paint the sides black and the top white.
  3. Make a frame on the lid using the same color as the sides of the box. To do this, step back a few centimeters from the edge of the top and glue a square of Coat the indents with black. After this, remove the tape. As a result, you have a frame for a white square in the middle with smooth edges.
  4. Choose a suitable picture. It can be depicted on a napkin, plain paper, wallpaper, and so on.
  5. Cut out the picture and put it in the water.
  6. Then take the picture out of the water, place it on a piece of oilcloth (an A4 file is perfect for this purpose) face down, and blot the top several times with a cotton or paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  7. Cover the picture with PVA glue or decoupage glue.
  8. Also coat the lid where the picture will be glued with glue.
  9. Transfer the oilcloth with the image to the lid. To do this, simply turn the picture over and straighten it with your fingers.
  10. Carefully remove the oilcloth.
  11. When the picture is dry, the entire cover should be coated with acrylic varnish.
  12. To prevent the borders of the picture from being too prominent and conspicuous, apply white paint to the edges of the image and gently blend it with a large brush or sponge (you can take a piece of foam rubber).
  13. To make the picture look harmonious, you can additionally add some touches with acrylic paint (for example, shadows and highlights, background).
  14. When you are done with the background and image, coat the entire surface of the box lid with varnish.
  15. Decorate the walls if desired.

When everything is dry, the box can be used.

Sheets with mulberry fibers: how to cover a box with paper?

Master class on gluing a box with mulberry leaves:

  1. Mulberry paper has a number of features that should be taken into account when working with it. The most important thing is that the material is very thin. Therefore, if you are decorating not a single-color surface, but with different images, then you need to cover it all with paint.
  2. When the paint is dry, cover the surface with PVA or decoupage glue.
  3. Tear the mulberry paper into pieces of different sizes and cover the box with them.
  4. If you want, additionally decorate the surface using the decoupage technique with napkins or other pictures. This should be done after the mulberry paper layer is completely dry.
  5. Finally, you need to cover the box with a layer of varnish.

This box looks antique and will fit perfectly into any interior.

Is it possible to decorate a box of a different shape?

How to cover a round box with paper:

  1. Place the box on a piece of paper and outline its bottom.
  2. Cut out two of these circles.
  3. Then cut a rectangular strip. Its height should be equal to the height of the sides of the box plus four extra centimeters.
  4. Cover a rectangular piece of paper and the sides of the box with glue.
  5. Step by step glue the rectangle to the side so that it extends beyond the edges from the bottom and top.
  6. Make cuts all the way around the exposed edges of the paper and fold them over the box.
  7. Glue the cut out circles to the bottom and lid of the round box.
  1. How to cover a box with colored paper if there is no other paper? These sheets can be used to decorate cardboard packaging in two ways: as usual or using the decoupage technique.
  2. To cover a box with wallpaper, use a special wallpaper. This way you will be sure that the paper will not move away from the walls over time.
  3. How to cover a box with gift paper or corrugated paper? Such leaves are very thin, and tearing them, as is the case with mulberries, is not recommended. This decor does not look very nice and neat. In this case, it is better to take a thin one and stick it around the entire perimeter of the box. Then the protective layer is removed from it, on which the paper is applied. This way the entire box is gradually covered.
  4. How to properly cover a box with paper so that it does not delaminate? To do this, you need to select the appropriate glue and carefully glue the sheets to the surface. Then the craft must be dried well.

To work you will need:

- wrapping paper (or scrapbooking paper), you can use different colors for the base and lid;
- glue stick (this type of pencil is most convenient for applying glue to paper in this case);
- scissors or stationery knife;
- ruler, pencil.

In order to properly cover the box with paper, you don’t need to invent anything special. The main thing in this matter is accuracy. We will not calculate the dimensions of the paper, but simply “try on” the paper to the box and fold the edges as shown in the photo.

Set the box aside and carefully fold your sheet of paper along all the marked fold lines.

Unfold the sheet and make these cuts in it. There is no need for special precision in this; the main thing is, when you cut out unnecessary corners, do not cut the bottom of the future box.

Place the box in the middle of the cut out template and use a glue stick to begin gluing the paper to the box. Start from the bottom of the box and then move to the sides.

Do the same with the box lid. If you use double-sided scrapbooking paper, you can cover the back of the lid

In this article we will tell you how to beautifully cover a box with wallpaper. Of course, you can also purchase ready-made containers for wrapping gifts and storing various small items, but if “you have time and inspiration,” then why not do some handicrafts? Moreover, this technology is quite simple, and even a schoolchild can do it.

Description of technology

What do we need

Any instructions for performing a particular job should begin with a list of everything necessary. Our case will not be an exception, so first we will figure out what we need.

So:

  • First of all, we are looking for the box itself. Since trellises are a fairly dense and durable material, they are not suitable for small products. To prevent the walls of the box from being deformed during pasting, it must be made of thick cardboard and securely fastened with either glue or metal staples.

Advice!
It is best to use shoe boxes, household appliance packaging, etc.
Containers made of so-called corrugated cardboard are also suitable, but their edges must be carefully sealed.

  • Next - wallpaper. Since we don’t need excessive durability, paper trellises (preferably single-layer) are quite suitable. You can also use non-woven fabric or textiles for work. In general, what is left after finishing the room is what we take!
  • The third required component is glue. In principle, this is the composition for the job, but it is better to buy high-quality PVA. Despite the fact that the price of this material is low, it is an almost ideal choice for decorating small objects.

In addition to the box itself, trellises and glue, we may need varnish to protect the product from moisture and damage, paint (if used), materials for decoration, etc. It all depends on how you see the result of your work.

Separately, it is worth taking care of the equipment.

In principle, a one-time job can be done with almost any cutting tool, but if you want to decorate several boxes, then you should stock up on everything you need according to this list:

  • Scissors with straight blades.
  • A knife with a replaceable cutting element (a model scalpel will do).

Advice!
To avoid damaging the table during work, you can lay a special thick rubber mat on it.
This coating self-heals some time after a cut, so you don’t have to worry about the force of pressure on the tool.

  • Metal ruler.
  • A protractor and compass (needed if the box is not rectangular in shape).
  • Stapler for temporary fixation.
  • Brushes for glue and decor.

Pasting process

There are several methods for decorating boxes with colored paper and trellises. Below we present the easiest one to implement: you are guaranteed to be able to master it yourself.

So, we carry out the work according to the following scheme:

  • Cut a piece of material from the remaining roll. We choose the size of the fragment with a good margin so that there are no joints on the walls of the product.
  • Lay out the trellises on a flat surface and place the box on them.
  • We draw along the perimeter of the bottom with the blunt side of the knife: This will help us make the folds along these lines smoother and clearer.
  • We wrap the walls with trellises, bending the edges inside the container. At the same time, we try to mark the folds in straight lines, preventing the material from being removed.

  • Unfold the wallpaper and remove the box. Using a ruler and a modeling knife, cut off the excess material.
  • Using a knife or scissors, cut the lines along which we will fold the wallpaper. Mark the folds with a blunt instrument.

Note!
If you have drawing skills, then you don’t have to worry about wrapping the product itself, but simply build a pattern according to the measurements taken.
In principle, with due care, both methods give identical results.

  • First, apply PVA glue to the bottom of the box and install it on the decorative material in the marked place. At the same time, you should not apply too much glue, as this can lead to wetness and deformation of the wallpaper.
  • Next, we coat the walls and glue the side parts to them.
  • Lastly, we glue those areas that should be located inside the container.

To make our box look as neat as possible, we need to “ennoble” it from the inside. To do this, the bottom, and sometimes the walls, are sealed with a single-color material. Most often, thick white paper is used for this purpose, but you can also use beautiful fabric (satin, velvet, etc.).

Decorating the product

When we wallpaper a box, we try to get the most beautiful product possible.

That’s why a variety of decorating techniques would be appropriate here:

  • Firstly, to preserve the color and texture of the wallpaper, you can open it with varnish. For this purpose, a colorless acrylic-based composition is best suited: it is non-toxic, does not damage paper and non-woven fabric, and at the same time, after polymerization, forms a fairly durable coating.

  • If used for pasting, the box can be painted. For this purpose, water- or alcohol-based acrylic paints are used.
  • The upper part of the sides can be decorated using wallpaper edging or fabric braid. Also, in some cases, lace looks good on the walls of the box.
  • It is also worth using vinyl stickers as express decor. They, of course, do not hold very firmly, but you can find almost any suitable pattern.

However, a more interesting technology is decoupage:

  • To decorate a covered box using this method, we will need interesting images. Traditionally, pictures cut from napkins are used (their main advantage is the thin base), but you can use other materials, or print the ornament yourself on thin paper.

Note!
In some cases, the decor is cut from thin wallpaper.
The duplex must be divided into layers.

  • Cut out the selected image along the contour. If there is a white background around it, you can leave it: anyway, after processing it will become almost transparent.
  • Then we apply special glue to the wall of the box and place decor on top. Using a brush, embed the picture in the adhesive layer and smooth it out so that there are no folds left.
  • When the glue begins to polymerize, treat the area with decorative varnish. In this case, the image becomes one with the base, and is perceived as part of it.

Note!
To achieve a more expressive effect, you can use a varnish that forms a surface of microcracks - the so-called craquelures.
This creates the impression of an aged surface.

Conclusion

Tips on how to wallpaper a box can be useful to anyone who wants to decorate their apartment with pleasant little things. This technique is simple and economical, so you will find at least one use for trellis trimmings. And the video in this article will help you master the technology of performing all operations.

The box itself can be both a place to store things and gift wrapping. That is why you should not rush to throw away cardboard boxes in which shoes were previously stored. But you need to understand that they don’t always look the way you like. You can decorate it and make wonderful gift wrapping for a future gift. To do this, it will be useful to know how to cover a box with paper.

In order to decorate the box exclusively with your own hands, you need to give it a presentable look. This is usually done using special bright paper. This may be suitable for:

  • color type of xerox paper;
  • regular wallpaper;
  • special gift packaging;
  • an ordinary napkin.

You will also need a pencil, a ruler for cutting paper and glue. An ordinary box that even a beginner can decorate used in various fields - and here are some of them:

Paper pasting process

There are certain subtleties of how to cover a box with gift paper, therefore, it is necessary to follow the recommendations of specialists in order to properly decorate.

First of all, you need to unroll the material that will be used for gluing. Next, place the box in such a way that the paper covers all its sides, including the sides.

When cutting, it is necessary to retreat about two centimeters in order to cover the surface of the sides of the box. Make notes that will help you cut exactly and measure the required distance using a ruler and pencil.

It is necessary to understand that if you want to paste the product from the inside, the length of the paper should be longer. To do this, measure the height of the side walls using a ruler. This double length makes the container look even more attractive - both outside and inside.

As for the cuts on the sides, they can be sealed with additional pieces. To do this, you also need to measure the height of the walls and display the dimensions on the gift material. The width of such a strip should not be less than five centimeters. After cutting, such strips need to be attached to the place where the sides are cut, that is, to the corners of the box. This will hide any inaccuracies that may have appeared during the work process.

When gluing, you need to carefully coat the box itself with glue. and also carefully glue the material. It is advisable to have a rag on hand - in order to quickly remove glue that appears on the sides in certain cases.

You need to smooth the paper while gluing it to eliminate any bubbles that have formed. Self-adhesive film can be used as a material for gluing.

Decoration outside

If you add a bow or pebbles to the product, you can use it as an excellent gift wrapping. It's worth watching a master class on decoupaging a shoe box.

This finishing method is the most economical way to create beauty with your own hands. The technique itself, called decoupage, involves decoration using wet wipes. The result is an appearance that is as non-standard and attractive as possible.

So, what materials are needed to decoupage a cardboard box with napkins:

  • white paint, preferably acrylic type;
  • sandpaper type;
  • napkins;
  • glue for fastening the material;
  • a rag or sponge to remove excess glue;
  • varnish that can be used for this cardboard.

First of all, it is better to create a matte surface of the shoe box for an even greater effect. Often the cardboard is shiny, which is not necessary in this case. To remove the gloss, simply run sandpaper over the cardboard itself and use paint to cover the surface of the future box. When doing this type of work, it is recommended to place a newspaper underneath so as not to stain the surface.

Next, you need to dry the box, and you can start decorating with napkins. The most beautiful of them are carefully glued to the surface. In this case, glue should be used in moderation. After the work has dried, the surface can be varnished.

This technique has become widespread due to the use of stamps and paint. Since you always want to cover a box beautifully, you can decorate it with fabric. This type is one of the most popular today.

What can you store in decorated shoe boxes?

Children's toys - from various construction sets to themed little things, for example, a collection of mini-figures from Kinder Surprises or outfits for dolls. Puzzles and small puzzles are stored well in such cardboard boxes.

Women's accessories - from hairpins and elastic bands to specialized hair or body care products.

Equipment charging supplies are a great way to collect all the chargers in one place, and on the lid of the box you can write exactly what chargers are stored in it to make it easier to find later.

Great advice! In the box itself you can store not only a charger, but also a “carrying device”. By inserting the chargers into it and making small holes on the side, you can bring the wires out of the box. All that remains is to sign or attach stickers with the name of the device to the container and then all that remains is to connect the phone or tablet to the desired wire. The good idea is that the interior will not have a huge number of wires that always get in the way on the floor or other surfaces, and the interior will look stylish and harmonious.

Art supplies – small pencils, brushes and tubes of paint will find an excellent hiding place in shallow boxes. You can make a larger box with exactly the same design for storing drawings and blank paper.

And, of course, the shoes themselves - no matter how paradoxical it sounds. And why not, because in this case it won’t be a shame to open the locker in front of guests and take out the pair of shoes you need from a very original box.

Decorating shoe boxes

Shoe boxes can be decorated in several ways - painted with acrylic paints, covered with cotton fabric or paper using PVA glue, self-adhesive film, paper wallpaper, old magazines or geographical maps. After processing, the boxes become very durable.

You can use small paper fans, buttons, beads or rivets as decoration. You can create different styles of boxes during the pasting process. And such items will not need to be hidden from prying eyes; on the contrary, they will serve as additional decor for the interior of your home.

An excellent material for creating such boxes and decorating them will be the pieces and sections of wallpaper left over from the renovation; in addition, you will need double-sided tape or PVA glue.

Fabric is also suitable - for example, a piece from a damaged dress, old jeans, a skirt that has become too small. Using natural material you can turn any item into an exclusive piece.

You can also decorate the box using a regular rope or braid; just apply glue and stick it on. It can be either straight stripes or various zigzags and convolutions.
