Kremlin house ... Pomelo "Thongdi"

People who first come across this new fruit for them often, before buying, try to find out from the seller what it is and what it is eaten with. Standing nearby, you can hear a bunch of questions from buyers: how is pamela, what is the calorie content, what is the benefit and harm from it, where and how does pamela grow, can it be used for losing weight? In response, you can hear such that the ears fade. And one lady from the crowd generally said that this is a genetically modified grapefruit and that it should never be eaten because cancer can develop from it. After listening to all these fables, we decided to write this small review in order to give reliable information about the nutritional and medicinal properties of this new fruit for us, as well as some warnings when using it. Where and how does the pomelo grow?

Well, firstly, the pomelo belongs to the citrus family, i.e. it is a relative of tangerines, oranges and grapefruit. By the way, this is not a type of grapefruit, but an independent species. It is much larger in size than the citrus fruits we know. The taste will also differ slightly. Pamela, although outwardly and resembles a grapefruit or orange, is much larger in size, and the taste is also completely different, less sweet with a slight pleasant bitterness. How to choose a pomelo in a store

To get the most out of this treat, you need to know how to pick the best fruit in the store. To do this, pay attention to the following characteristics:

1. Weight. Ripe fruit is usually heavy, while unripe fruit is lightweight with a thick skin.

2. Color. The uniform light green and slightly pinkish color of the pomelo indicates its maturity. If one of the sides of the sheddock is greenish, the fruit is immature.

3. Elasticity. Ripe fruit retains its elasticity, although it is slightly squeezed when pressed.

4. Smell. The intense citrus scent also indicates that the pomelo is ripe.

Harm and contraindications of pomelo

Like any other food, in some cases sheddock can be harmful to the body.

  • The product increases the acidity in the stomach, which means it is contraindicated for "ulcers" and people suffering from gastritis with high acidity.
  • Bearing in mind the choleretic effect of pomelo, you should not use it for people suffering from gallstones.
  • Pomelo activates the production of gastric enzymes, creating additional stress on the liver. In this sense, the fruit is not suitable for people suffering from hepatitis and other pathologies of this organ.
  • Sheddock gently reduces blood pressure, helping "hypertensives". But for persons with pathologically low blood pressure, such a fruit can harm, increasing the already unpleasant symptoms.
  • People who are allergic to citrus fruits should also avoid pomelo or use it very carefully. Allergic reactions to this product can be determined using allergy tests.
  • During the period of breastfeeding, pediatricians do not recommend eating this fruit. This is connected, again, with the risk of developing allergies in the baby. For the same reason, pomelo is not introduced into the diet of children under 1 year old. And older babies are given fruit in small quantities.
  • Finally, do not abuse pompelmus, as excessive use of this product can result in insomnia, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, kidney failure.

If you only need half of the fruit to prepare the salad, peel it carefully, being careful not to damage the film of the remaining slices. What's more, place the rest of the sheddock in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator. This will prevent the fruit from drying out prematurely.

Basically, if the pomelo's skin is intact, it can be stored for quite a long time, especially if you keep it in the refrigerator.

In addition to vitamin C, pomelo is rich in B vitamins, beta-carotene and minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper. Additionally, it is a good source of folic acid, which is useful for pregnant women, since it is a very important and necessary substance, especially in the first months of fetal development.

100 grams of pomelo pulp provides the daily requirement of vitamin C.

Calorie content. This is a very low calorie food - it contains about 50 calories per 100 grams.

How to eat pomelo, how to choose and store

They eat pomelo in different ways, but the easiest way is to just peel it, by the way, it is much easier to peel it than an orange or grapefruit, then the slices are separated. The film is removed from them. Delicious pulp remains ready for use.

You should choose a pamela in which the bark is elastic, without dents and brown spots. The pomelo should not be too soft, this is a sign that it has begun to deteriorate inside. The best fruit is the one that is smaller but heavier - this means that the bark is thinner and the flesh is more juicy.

Unpeeled pomelo will keep in the refrigerator for about 2-3 weeks. If you have already peeled the fruit, then you will have to eat it no more than 2-3 days later.
