How to sheathe old furniture. Do-it-yourself sofa upholstery

It's no secret that over time, the upholstery of upholstered furniture loses its original appearance, especially if there are pets in the house, old furniture often does not fit into the new interior after renovation. In this case, you should not change the existing furniture for new interior items.

A simpler solution would be to replace the upholstery fabric and upholstered furniture lining. In most cases, this is not difficult at all. This short review provides detailed instructions on how to pull the sofa with your own hands.

Self-hauling sofas

It is quite possible to renew the covering of upholstered furniture independently or with the help of professionals. When performing work on your own, you can face the following difficulties, which are difficult to overcome without special skills:

Problems can arise during the first stage of furniture disassembly. Sometimes it is problematic to do this without special skills and tools. Therefore, deciding on this work, you need to test your strength by pulling at least a stool. On this simple task, you can hone technology and choose a tool.

The details of the sofa can have complex geometric shapes. Therefore, it is difficult for them to make the correct pattern, and then carry out the correct stretch. The pattern will be easier to make if you copy it from the old upholstery.

Pulling a sofa with a book, consisting essentially of two rectangular halves and two sides, is much easier than a non-folding sofa with large armrests and additional pillows, or in the case when the pattern consists of several pieces of fabric.

When restoring old furniture, it is not enough to replace only the upholstery. Often it is necessary to replace the filler, repair the frame and even replace the springs in old sofas.

Antique furniture requires very careful handling, it is better to entrust its repair and renovation to professionals.

For decoration, materials that are difficult to work can be used. Leather is much more difficult to deal with than fabric. For the first hand-made banner of the sofa, it is better to choose fabric materials.

Work technology

This task is time consuming but quite doable work. It is not difficult to pull the sofa at home if all steps need to be performed carefully and in accordance with the recommendations and instructions.

At the first stage, the sofa is disassembled: overhead elements, seat, back are removed. Fasteners come in handy during assembly, so they are carefully assembled.

Next, the old upholstery is removed. This is done using an ordinary thin flat screwdriver. The cover should not be thrown away, as new fabrics will be cut into its shape. After removing the coating, you need to check the condition of the internal structure and clean it.

Foam rubber requires mandatory replacement, since it has a short service life compared to natural materials. Instead of foam rubber, a relatively recently appeared synthetic winterizer, which has a long service life, can be used. In addition, you need to fix and check the fastening of the metal springs.

Then patterns are made from the new material. They are very easy to make using the removed old upholstery, you just need to add a few centimeters on each side for an allowance, the excess of which is then cut off. All fabric blanks for the pillows and for the sofa itself are made in the same way.

It is better to purchase upholstery fabric with a small margin. Since, if the dimensions and calculations are inaccurate, it may not be enough and in the worst case it will not be possible to buy it.

Different materials are purchased depending on the purpose of the furniture. They can be made from breathable, natural, but not abrasion-resistant fabric, ideal for sleeping, or they can be made of abrasion-resistant leather, suitable for long-term, permanent use, for example, in organizations.

Buying fabric or leather is a very responsible event, so before pulling a sofa, you should study the photos of various design solutions, choose your own individual style, choose the right fabric and store.

Selection of material

The choice of materials should be done with great care. It is necessary to select fabrics not only by their design and combination, but also by their quality.

Good quality fabric should not smell harsh. The pile should be firmly attached to the base, there should be no shedding. Its consumption depends on the pattern of the fabric, since in some versions it is required to set the pattern in a certain direction.

The synthetic winterizer is also not the same and requires a choice. When buying it, you should pay attention to the fact that it should be white, odorless, durable, not torn in your hands.

Foam rubber also comes in different qualities. The main characteristic is the size of the bubbles. In high-quality foam rubber, the bubbles are small, and in lower quality material, they are large. The size of the bubbles, oddly enough, determines the durability and wear resistance of the foam rubber.

Cloth upholstery is the final step and is carried out with a construction stapler and glue. This operation is easier to accomplish if you take photographs of the furniture before disassembling.

Self-upholstering at home is quite feasible, but requires some skill and patience. A neatly made constriction will give pleasure and save a lot of money.

Over time, the upholstery of upholstered furniture falls into disrepair and loses its old attractiveness or no longer fits into the new interior of the room. In this case, do not rush to completely replace it, since restoration measures will cost you much cheaper.

Padding sofas with your own hands: first acquaintance

To pull the upholstered furniture, you can invite repair specialists to your home, having previously found out how much it will cost to pull the sofa, take it to the workshop, or try to do this work yourself.

We will try to highlight in the article how to make the sofa upright with your own hands, what difficulties you will have to face, and we will tell you in which cases it is not recommended to carry out work on your own.

It should be noted that the technology used today by professionals to stretch leather sofas is somewhat different from the methods of replacing the upholstery on their own. And even in spite of this, you have every chance to achieve an excellent result with self-hauling, especially if you have special skills and abilities that can be obtained after regular practice, otherwise the work will be extremely difficult and even impossible. For example, in cases where:

  1. independent disassembly of furniture due to the complexity of the design causes difficulties;
  2. complex geometric shapes of individual parts of the sofa do not allow making the correct pattern for the upholstery;
  3. the furniture has been in operation for more than 5-7 years without any repair work. It is quite possible that the restoration will not cost only by replacing the upholstery, but it will be necessary to repair the frame and change the filler, and it is better to entrust this to real masters;
  4. you have to deal with the hauling of a sofa, the cost of which is prohibitively high, for example, with antiques, which requires a special frugal approach;
  5. it is planned that as the upholstery material will be used "complex" material, which is not easy to work with, for example, the waist of the sofa with leather or leatherette.

In the rest of the cases, independent stretching of sofas is a laborious, but quite feasible task, solved in several stages:

  1. disassembly, removal of individual elements (pillows, poufs and sidewalls);
  2. removal of worn upholstery;
  3. cut new upholstery;
  4. fastening to individual parts of upholstered furniture;
  5. assembly of the structure.

Self-stretching technology for sofas

1. Disassembly, removal of individual elements (pillows, poufs and sidewalls)

Armed with a special tool, you can start disassembling the sofa. To do this, with extreme care, without damaging the mountings, detach the sidewalls, remove the overhead elements, poufs and pillows, back and seat. The design features of the sofas allow you to work quickly, without any special labor, since manufacturers often provide high maintainability of the product.

After removal, it is better to carefully place the fasteners in a special container prepared in advance - this will ensure their safety during the repair work.

2. Removing worn upholstery

Using a staple remover or a flat screwdriver, we remove the fastening brackets that hold the worn out upholstery. It is recommended to carry out the work with the utmost care, trying not to damage the integrity of the coating, which you will use in the future as a template for the manufacture of new upholstery.

Having cleared of debris and dust, all natural and environmentally friendly materials can be reused, with the exception of foam rubber that has lost its properties, which acts as a filler. We do not regret rotting foam rubber and throw it away. Experts say that changing the padding will only benefit the sofa: elasticity is added, lumps and dents disappear.

The filler is usually followed by a metal mesh, metal or nylon stretch marks and springs, which stretch over time and are connected to the sofa frame by means of nylon stretch marks. We remove the detected stretch marks and carefully examine the springs to eliminate possible defects and shortcomings. After that, we fasten it with new stretch marks. If the sofa is equipped with mesh or belts instead of springs, then if there are defects, it is better to replace them with new ones.

After visually inspecting the frame and other wooden parts of the sofa, carefully tighten all screws, glue the joints and reinforce the joints.

3. Cut out the new upholstery and attach it to individual pieces of upholstered furniture

Finally, you can start cutting the new upholstery. The creation of a pattern is an important stage, the quality of which largely determines the result of the furniture constriction. You will greatly facilitate your task if you use a ready-made "pattern" from the old material taken from the sofa, adding a few centimeters around the edges for allowances.

In order to understand the cutting process and perform it accurately, we will tell you in more detail about creating patterns for pillows, which are equipped with many models of modern furniture sets.

At the first stage, we dismantle the pillows and use a tape measure or a centimeter to measure all parameters: length, width and height. It is better to do the marking with chalk on a flat surface, adding 5 cm on each side to the bend of the material. Cut the resulting figure exactly along the drawn lines. Having straightened the finished blanks face down, place the pillow strictly in the center and tuck the fabric tightly on all sides. Then we fix it to the wooden frame with staples or furniture nails. The distance between the staples should not exceed 4 cm.

To facilitate the process, secure the fabric first in several places on the side, then, turning the pillow over, fix the opposite raw edge of the fabric on the back surface. Remember, the fabric should be pulled evenly and tightly, otherwise the pattern may be skewed, and the material will quickly become unusable.

Similarly, the material is fixed on the rest of the untreated areas of the pillow. Such a simple technology is quite applicable for replacing the upholstery for all parts of the sofa.

It should be noted that the most common mistake in the manufacture of new upholstery is the incorrect calculation of the material. Mathematical inaccuracies and shortcomings can cause a shortage of purchased fabric. Of course, it can be bought in addition, but no seller will guarantee that in the next batch its shade will be the same. It is easy to avoid this - buy upholstery fabric with a margin. The remaining material can be used to draw a stool or sew decorative pillows.

As for the choice of fabric, here you need to decide on the functional load of your updated sofa: if it will be used for sleeping, then the fabric should be with natural fibers that will allow your body to "breathe"; if you sit on the sofa, then the material should be durable and durable, with synthetic fibers.

4. Assembly of the structure

Having approached the final stage, it is better to get the photographs taken at the time of disassembling the furniture - they will provide you with invaluable assistance in connecting all the elements in the correct order.

The video clearly shows the process of stretching the sofa.

At first glance, the described technology of self-stretching of a sofa may seem quite easy, however, if you do not have special skills and experience, then the lesson will be laborious and difficult. However, the result is worth the effort!

The choice of materials for the waist of the sofa

Choosing upholstery fabric

When choosing upholstery, try to be guided not only by aesthetic considerations, but also by its practicality, avoiding rough or synthetic fabrics, which, despite their attractiveness, can ultimately lead to disappointment.

Of course, the color, texture and pattern of the fabric are determined by personal preferences and the requirements of the surrounding interior, however, the following requirements should be presented to the material:

  • The fabric for the upholstery of the sofa should not have a sharp specific odor and fade (a poor-quality, toxic dye may have been used);
  • The pile must be firmly fixed to the fabric;
  • A thick, fleecy fabric (like a carpet) will help hide your inexperienced stretch. Having chosen such a material, you will have to take into account the direction of the pile when cutting. Even if all the pieces looked the same when the pattern was made, the left armrest may end up looking darker than the right one. This is due to the fact that on the left side the pile "looked" in your direction, and on the right - vice versa. Of course, this difference will catch the eye of your loved ones and guests.
  • Material with a small abstract pattern, monochromatic and lint-free will help to minimize waste of fabric during cutting. On such a material, you can economically place patterns, because they can be rotated.
  • The maximum consumption is observed for a fabric decorated with a large geometric ornament or pattern: when cutting, each line or cell should be located in a certain direction. In addition, the ornament must match both on the seats and on the backrest. For example, if you bought a fabric in a wide strip of red and blue, then the red strip on the back of your sofa should continue on the seat, excluding any displacement that looks ugly and dramatically striking.
  • Use companion fabrics. Traditionally, such sets include colored fabric, for example, large daisies on a lush green background and uniform of the same color. Creative approach and a little craftsmanship will allow you to create original upholstery for your sofa: the back and seats will be upholstered in brightly colored materials, and the armrests will be upholstered in a dark solid color companion fabric. These armrests are more practical because they don't get so dirty. In addition, they favorably distinguish the main fabric, and the sofa acquires clear outlines, especially when it comes to the do-it-yourself banner of the corner sofa.

  • Tapestry is the most common material for upholstering a book sofa. A high-quality, expensive tapestry will add sophistication and aristocracy to your furniture, which, alas, cannot be said about a cheap tapestry or chinil, which is similar in quality to ordinary medical gauze. This means that it will not serve for long. Therefore, if this is the first time you come across a sofa with your own hands, then do not start with this fabric - you will forever discourage the desire to do this business in the future.

The choice of padding polyester

When purchasing ready-made furniture, it is almost impossible to assess the quality of padding polyester under the upholstery. However, if you need to buy it to stretch your sofa, then a few tips will definitely help you make a worthy choice.

  • Colour. The quality of the padding polyester is indicated by its color. White color indicates high quality, but if you notice the presence of other shades, this may mean that toxic recyclable materials were used in the production process.
  • Smell. A pungent smell should not come from the padding polyester.
  • Strength. A good synthetic winterizer is strong enough, and it's hard to break it with your hands. But if the material falls apart in your hands or exfoliates, then it is better to refuse to buy it.
  • The thickness, density and structure of the padding polyester should be uniform throughout the canvas.

The choice of foam rubber

In the process of manufacturing and reconstruction of upholstered furniture, foam rubber and latex are used. Low-quality foam rubber quickly loses its original characteristics and properties: in the near future it will shrink, stick together and wear, turn into a plasticine-like mass, and the furniture will cease to be soft. Take a closer look at the cheap sofas in the store: the furniture is new, two or three dozen potential buyers sat on it, and the sofa has already sagged, and the fabric has sagged.

High-quality foam rubber can be distinguished from a cheap competitor by its porous structure: in high-quality foam rubber, the bubbles are small, and in a low-quality product, they are large. Firmly squeeze the foam rubber with your fingers, and it straightens slowly, as if reluctantly, in contrast to the high-quality one, which "shoots" instantly.

Usually, foam rubber comes from the factory in a packed form, compressed in volume 5-6 times. Experts do not recommend storing it in this form: the material significantly loses its quality. Therefore, after purchase, straighten the foam sheets and let them sit.

If you prefer a sofa or bed with a stiffer base, then replace the top layer of foam rubber with a thickness of, for example, 50 mm, with a "sandwich" of two sheets of foam rubber 20mm and 30mm and a layer of felt between them. At the same time, the hardness of the felt is directly proportional to the hardness of the sofa.

So, if you are still full of optimism to restore your favorite sofa with your own hands, then by all means use the advice of experts on upholstered furniture hauling.

  1. Often, the result of stretching the sofa with your own hands in the photos of companies specializing in this is images that reflect the creative approach and highly professional work of experienced craftsmen who use modern tools and expensive materials in their work.
  2. Carrying out the hauling of furniture on your own, avoid complex patterns and "structures" from several pieces of material. Such upholstery, of course, will look very impressive in the photo, but it is quite difficult to bring such an idea to life.
  3. Fired up with the idea of pulling an old sofa or chair on your own, try to pull, for example, a stool for a start. So you can feel the fabric in advance, choose the right tool and determine with the technology of the waist.
  4. Do-it-yourself upholstery of furniture - video or photos are required. The correct technology for stretching the sofa with your own hands will allow you not only to competently replace the upholstery material, but also to make a high-quality assembly of furniture and bring it to its original position. To do this, at the stage of disassembling the sofa, arm yourself with a camera and record exactly all the fastening methods and the sequence of assembling furniture elements. The photographs obtained will assist you in the correct assembly of the sofa.
  5. Do-it-yourself high-quality furniture repair and restoration will require you to have basic skills and a special tool. You will need:
  • screwdriver with a flat tip for removing old fasteners of upholstery material;
  • hex keys for parsing the furniture frame;
  • nippers and side cutters;
  • a styler for installing new cladding fasteners;
  • sewing supplies (scissors, marker or chalk for marking);
  • sewing machine;
  • special threads Titan. They are highly durable, so it is not recommended to tear them by hand.

6. Decorative buttons for the decoration of pillows are best ordered at a clothing repair shop. All you need is a piece of upholstery fabric.

7. If the upholstered furniture is decorated with welts and edging, quilted with multiple folds or has an angular shape, then it is better to contact a specialized company and entrust the hauling to professional craftsmen. After all, the disappointment from the poor quality of the final result lasts much longer than the disappointment from the high cost.

It's hard to imagine a home without a sofa. Regardless of interior solutions, it is an integral part of many rooms: from the bedroom to the living room. But over time, the furniture loses its original appearance.

In this case, any person is faced with a dilemma: throw out or drag the sofa. It is clear that due to the high cost of upholstered furniture, most people choose the second option. A completely logical question immediately arises: how to sheathe a sofa without resorting to the services of specialists?

Preparatory stages

It is clear that any job requires certain practical skills. If they are minimal, then during the constriction of upholstered furniture, you may encounter some problems. In particular, it is difficult to sheathe a sofa with your own hands when it is badly worn out. We'll have to deal with replacing not only the upholstery material, but also the filler with the frame.

When stretching the sofa, problems such as:

  1. The furniture has a rather complex structure.
  2. Creation of complex elements of upholstery that should follow the contours of the furniture.
  3. The presence of a leather sofa or other expensive furniture. This often leads to the purchase of upholstery materials that are very difficult to work with.

In order to be of high quality, we need the following materials and tools:

Sofa upholstery tools: hammers, pliers, side cutters, round nose pliers, screwdriver set, keys.

  • upholstery fabric;
  • foam rubber;
  • plywood;
  • PVA glue;
  • harsh thread;
  • needle;
  • scissors;
  • construction stapler;
  • metal staples;
  • nail puller;
  • drill;
  • hammer;
  • stationery knife;
  • pliers;
  • side cutters;
  • round nose pliers;
  • a set of screwdrivers (Phillips, Hexagonal, with a flat tip).

When preparing for the upholstery of upholstered furniture, special attention should be paid to the choice of a beautiful and reliable upholstery material. Naturally, ordinary fabrics that are used for sewing clothes are clearly not suitable.

The optimal solution would be to purchase a sofa cover made of flock, tapestry, jacquard, courtesan, velor or leather. It is these fabrics that are now the most popular.

When choosing the upholstery material yourself, be sure to consider the purpose of the sofa. If it acts as a place to sleep, then buy fabric with natural fibers. The use of such upholstery will create comfort for the human body. The fabric will keep your body cool in hot weather and keep you warm on cold days.

If family members and guests are just sitting on the couch, it is best to purchase synthetic fabric, which is characterized by increased wear resistance and strength.

The main mistake that is allowed when stretching upholstered furniture is an inaccurate calculation of the fabric to be purchased.

In order to easily pull the sofa with your own hands, the upholstery material should be bought with a margin. Excess fabric can be used for sheathing other structures. For example, chairs or ottomans.

If you have not previously dealt with sheathing massive upholstered furniture, then it is better to get practical skills when pulling a small structure. Usually a stool acts as a “guinea pig”. And only after such an experience, you can sheathe a large sofa with your own hands.

Repair of the frame and laying of foam rubber

The work begins with the removal of the old upholstery material. Using a flat screwdriver and pliers, pry, swing and remove the staples. The backing can be removed even when it is in good condition.

The quality of all elements made of wood is checked. Particular attention is paid to the frame of upholstered furniture. If broken or damaged boards are found, they must be repaired, and it is better to replace them with new ones.

All joints are securely reinforced and glued. The springs are immediately bandaged, which serve as the main one for laying the padded fabric and batting. In this work, it is better not to overdo it. The springs need only be compressed by 20-25%.

Now you can start laying the foam rubber. When buying a filler for upholstered furniture, two main characteristics are taken into account: thickness and density of the material. For the upholstery of the back of the sofa, foam rubber is purchased, which has a thickness of 3-4 cm.For the sidewalls of upholstered furniture, material up to 2 cm thick is sufficient.

As for the density of the foam rubber, its optimal indicator for a sofa is 25-30 kg / m³. If you buy a filler with a low density, then this will lead to rapid deformation of the furniture. It is also better not to use too hard foam rubber, since it will reduce the level of comfortable pastime on the sofa.

To give the upholstered furniture optimal elasticity, it is best to lay the filler in two layers. First, hard foam is laid, and on top of it, a less rigid material.

Foam rubber attachment technology provides for a sequence of actions:

  1. After removing the old fasteners, a sheet of plywood is attached to the frame.
  2. Foam rubber is glued to plywood strictly according to the location of the seats and backrests.
  3. The first layer of filler is covered with 3 cm thick foam rubber.
  4. In the front of the sofa, the second layer of material is folded (up to the very base of the frame).

Upholstered furniture is a popular design found in every living space. They are represented by various products with their own purpose, shape and characteristics. In the production process, they are equipped with different types of upholstery, for which fabrics or leather, as well as various artificial materials, can be used. It is the upholstery of furniture that is most often exposed to various negative influences, therefore it quickly wears out. If the design itself is still reliable and of high quality, then the best solution is to replace the upholstery of upholstered furniture. This process allows you to update any piece of furniture, and materials are selected for these purposes, ideally matching the tastes of the owners.

Do-it-yourself furniture upholstery can be easily replaced if you understand this process well. In this case, it is important to decide what materials will be used. Different materials can be used as a filler, and their choice depends on whether upholstered furniture will be used as a place to sleep, since in this case it is desirable that the filler be sufficiently rigid.

Fillers can be selected for furniture:

  • foam rubber, which is characterized by low cost, quick wear and tear and not very high quality, therefore, its service life is limited to 5 years;
  • latex, which has good parameters, high elasticity and repetition of the human body, which contributes to an even distribution of the load, but the cost of this material is considered high;
  • polyurethane retains its shape well and is environmentally friendly, and its cost is at an acceptable level, so it is affordable for every buyer;
  • synthetic winterizer makes it possible to give old furniture any shape and relief;
  • holofiber has a high wear resistance, perfectly keeps its shape, is hygienic and environmentally friendly;
  • coconut fleece makes it possible to separate the filler from the springs of a sofa or chair, therefore, the service life of the interior item itself increases.

Sintepon

In addition to the filler, you need to choose a material for upholstered furniture upholstery. For this, different fabrics or leather with different parameters and appearance can be used. A photo of the finished cladding can be viewed below. The most popular materials for upholstery are:

  • flock, which has a low cost and not too good strength, as well as low abrasion resistance;
  • velor, which ensures the creation of a pleasant upholstery, and it is considered resistant to various influences, which guarantees a long service life with proper care;
  • the tapestry is pleasant to the touch and has an excellent appearance, therefore, such upholstery for furniture is chosen quite often;
  • leather or leatherette are attractive materials that provide presentable furniture, but it is quite difficult to work with them, and high-quality products are also expensive;
  • jacquard is durable and soft, and it does not require specific maintenance, therefore it is considered an excellent choice for different types of upholstered furniture.

Thus, sofas and armchairs can be upholstered with different types of materials, since they are actually presented in numerous varieties. In the selection process, you should take into account your own preferences, the ease of working with different fabrics, as well as the available means for these actions.

Calculation of the required amount of material

It is not difficult to change the upholstery of furniture, but for this you need to perform certain stages of work. Before the actual work, it is recommended to watch several video tutorials in order to take into account the numerous nuances of the process, as well as to know about the specific pitfalls.

Replacement of upholstery on furniture can be done with different fabrics, and after choosing them, calculations should be made that give information about how much fabric or leather you need to buy in order to complete the planned work without interruption.

The calculation can be performed independently or using special computer programs. Additionally, there are quite a few special online calculators that are easy to use. They allow you to quickly get the desired result when you enter certain data. All methods are simple to implement, but if the self-calculation method is chosen, then the following actions are performed:

  • the master who will do the work measures the armrests;
  • then measurements are taken from the back and seat of upholstered furniture;
  • 10 cm is added to each value obtained, since it is important to purchase material with a margin.

Thus, determining how much material to purchase for upholstery is quite simple. Each person independently decides which calculation method will be used.

We measure the seat and back

Required tools

To complete the work, standard tools will be required, since re-upholstery does not require specific products. For the process you will need:

  • ordinary furniture stapler;
  • screwdriver;
  • sharp knife;
  • pliers, hammer, scissors, round nose pliers, needle and some other small tools.

For a more reliable fastening of materials, it is recommended to additionally purchase high-quality PVA glue.

Stages of work

The upholstery of upholstered furniture at home changes quite quickly and easily, but in order to obtain a high-quality and optimal result, it is recommended to carefully study the correct instructions beforehand. Photos of the sequential process are located below.

Analysis of the structure

The process begins with the fact that the furniture is disassembled with its own hands into separate component parts. The master class of this process is shown in the photo below. The procedure may differ depending on what kind of furniture is being disassembled.

For disassembly, it is necessary to remove all mechanical fasteners, which include various nails or bolts, and during work, no significant effort should be made, as they can cause significant damage to the frame.

During work, you should try to ensure that the old upholstery is not damaged, since it will still need to be used to create blanks from the new material.

To remove the staples, use special tools or ordinary screwdrivers. Often you have to deal with the fact that it is impossible to pull out any element, and in this case it is simply hammered in with a hammer.

We take out the staples

The old upholstery will certainly be neatly unpicked, as it will still be useful in the subsequent stages of work. This work must be done carefully, and often manufacturers attach the material really reliably to the furniture frame, so significant efforts will have to be made to release it.

There are many materials for creating upholstery, so different types can be found on furniture. A video of the sequential dismantling of the upholstery is presented below.

Cutting material

The next step involves the creation of special blanks from the material selected to create a new upholstery. The whole process is divided into successive stages:

  • old parts of the upholstery are laid on new material;
  • markings are applied on them with a pencil or chalk;
  • the necessary workpieces are cut out according to the markings, and it is advisable to add 5 cm on each side to ensure an easy and simple bend of the material.

New furniture upholstery at home can be made in the form of covers, but this option is only suitable for furniture that is completely disassembled into individual elements.

Old pieces of upholstery are stacked on a new one.

Cut out blanks

Wrapping elements

As soon as all parts of the future new upholstery are prepared, they begin to cover upholstered furniture with their own hands. If the structures are equipped with a wooden frame, then preliminary varnishing is considered a good solution.

Elements of new upholstery are attached to the main parts of the furniture using a furniture stapler and staples, and it is important to correctly straighten the material beforehand. The presence of any folds or irregularities is not allowed, therefore they must be eliminated promptly.

During work, it is necessary to tighten the fabric well and carefully, and if it is attached too loosely, it will not serve for a long time. Thus, changing the upholstery is actually quite simple, if you approach this process responsibly and with great care.

Assembly

The last stage of the work is that the master must reassemble the disassembled piece of furniture. This action is performed only after all elements are trimmed with new fabric or leather.

The process should be carried out in the same way as the analysis of the structure, but only in the reverse order. During work, various loose elements may be found, and they need to be tightened and secured. In some places, it is allowed to improve the fastening with PVA glue.

It is recommended to take a photo of this process when disassembling furniture, since often people have difficulties with processing the assembly of the structure, and the photographs will help determine the correct actions. Thus, changing the upholstery is actually simple, if you carefully understand the process, use only high-quality materials and perform all actions carefully.

Nuances of work

Stages of repair and upholstery of upholstered furniture are specific actions that allow you to update and improve the condition and appearance of any structure. To save money, these works are often performed on their own. To obtain an ideal result, some nuances are taken into account:

  • it is recommended to use special fabrics or other materials specially designed for creating furniture upholstery, as they have high wear resistance and good quality, are easy to clean and durable;
  • it is often necessary to replace the padding, and not the upholstery, and in this case, one should focus on the purchase of an elastic and high-quality material that does not lose its shape even with constant and serious loads;
  • if the work is done for the first time, it is recommended to use materials that are easy to use to create the upholstery, and they should also be inexpensive so that when you make a mistake you do not need to spend a lot of money on fixing it;
  • for furniture, it is important to choose upholstery that fits perfectly into the interior and suits the taste and preferences of direct users;
  • taken into account when choosing a material, in what operating conditions it will be used, since if upholstered furniture is installed in the kitchen, then the upholstery should not absorb extraneous odors, and must also be easy to clean and resistant to moisture.

Thus, replacing furniture upholstery is a rather specific procedure, in the study of which you can carry out the process on your own. For this, different fabrics or leather, as well as other materials, can be used. Simultaneously with the replacement of the upholstery, even the filler can be changed, which will significantly increase the comfort of using the structure, as well as increase its service life. To ensure an excellent work result, it is recommended that you carefully study the current instructions in advance, as well as understand the nuances of the procedure in order to avoid mistakes.

No matter how high-quality the upholstery of the sofa is, over time it becomes unusable. Weak points are the armrests, the fabric on which wears off, the seats that sag under the weight, the location of the seams that creep out from tension, etc.

The easiest option for updating upholstered furniture is to call the upholstery master at home, who will replace the upholstery material and filler for a small amount. However, you can do everything yourself, given that the constriction process is simple.

Covering materials

To sheathe an old sofa with a new fabric, you should choose the most suitable option, both in terms of beauty and style, as well as in terms of durability and functionality. Several types of materials are used as upholstery:

  • Scotchguard (furniture cotton) is a durable, lightweight and pleasant to the touch material, in the manufacture of which only natural fibers are used. This upholstery is considered versatile due to its high resistance to moisture and dirt. The fabric is easy to clean and retains its original color for a long time.
  • Micro-velor and velor is a soft, silky fabric that is made by mixing synthetic and natural fibers. This gives the canvas strength, while maintaining environmental friendliness. Such fabric for upholstery of a sofa is used in offices, living rooms, bedrooms or dressing rooms. It is not recommended to use it in the kitchen or in children's rooms. It gets dirty quickly and wears out quickly.
  • Jacquard is one of the most durable and beautiful upholstery materials. It got its characteristics thanks to the original weaving of threads in several layers, laid tightly to each other. The fabric does not fade in the sun, does not lose its shape, and is easy to clean. Patterns on the canvas are formed in the process of weaving the fibers, which makes them bulky, and the fabric itself is expensive.
  • Thermojacquard is a new fabric, which is produced by placing thermal paper on an unpainted canvas with a classic jacquard and then heating it. As a result of such manipulations, the dye penetrates into the fibers and is securely fixed. The material has all the positive characteristics of a simple jacquard, but is much cheaper.
  • Chenneel is made from synthetic and semi-synthetic threads, twisted in a spiral using both longitudinal and transverse weaving. The fabric is pleasant to the touch, has a fleecy surface, is environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic. The fabric quickly absorbs moisture and does not like wet cleaning, therefore it cannot be used in rooms with high humidity.
  • Flock is a canvas made of satin, cotton or polyester, on which fine artificial pile is glued. The fabric is lightweight and pleasant to the touch, resistant to dirt, does not absorb moisture. It is presented in a large number of color and patterned varieties, "anti-claw" is also available. It implies complete protection against any type of mechanical damage, including from animals.
  • Leather (eco-leather) is durable and practical. It is easy to clean, does not absorb moisture and odors, and is non-toxic. Natural material, whatever it may be, is able to withstand changes in temperature and humidity, does not deteriorate in direct sunlight. Eco-leather or leatherette does not possess such characteristics.
  • Faux suede is beautiful and durable, but it only requires a dry cleaning method. It can be woven or non-woven. The first type is more durable, the second costs much less.
  • Corduroy is made from various materials, weaving them in such a way that the fabric becomes fleecy over the entire surface or with stripes of different thicknesses. The fabric is made out in one color and requires careful maintenance.
  • Arpatek is another material that looks like leather. It began to be widely used as an upholstery material for upholstered furniture. The composition of the coating contains 25% cotton, 33% polyurethane and 42% viscose, thanks to which it retains heat, does not coarse upon cooling, is resistant to ultraviolet light and moisture, and is completely safe.

How to correctly calculate fabric for covers

The first step in upholstering a sofa with your own hands is to calculate how many meters of fabric you need to purchase. For a standard piece of furniture, you need 8 sq. m of material. If the product has an angular design or is made for individual sizes, you will have to arm yourself with a tape measure and start measuring.

The simplest measurement method is as follows:

  1. First, the width and length of the sofa are determined.
  2. Then the resulting values are multiplied by two, then it becomes clear what the dimensions of the required canvas should be.

You can independently measure the dimensions of the sheathing sheet using the following method:

  • All elements of the sofa are measured with a tape measure or tailor's meter.
  • All components of the upholstery are schematically drawn on a sheet of paper with minimal waste and indication of dimensions.
  • All data are summarized. Stocks for seams and cuts are taken into account.
  • According to the numbers obtained, the amount of fabric that will be needed to sheathe the sofa is determined.

Step-by-step instruction

To implement a sofa banner at home, you need basic knowledge of joinery and sewing, while special difficulties can arise only sometimes:

  1. Unusual furniture design and difficulty in disassembly.
  2. The presence of parts of a complex geometric shape with the absence of old upholstery, which does not allow using it as a template.
  3. The sofa is old. In addition to updating the upholstery and filling, it is necessary to replace or repair some parts of the frame.
  4. Desire to use natural leather as upholstery.
  5. If the piece of furniture is of antique value, independent restoration and upholstery work can be harmful.

In other cases, the process of how to correctly replace the upholstery material can be conditionally divided into the preparation of fabric, tools and consumables, marking and cutting of blanks, followed by stitching them into a single product, replacing the filler and fixing the upholstery.

Instruments

Before sheathing the sofa with a new fabric, you need to make sure that all the necessary tools are present in the house:

  • pliers, pliers, a set of simple and hex keys;
  • anti-stapler and stapler with staples;
  • hammer, furniture small nails;
  • a set of screwdrivers, self-tapping screws;
  • furniture glue;
  • tailor's meter or tape measure;
  • stationery knife, scissors;
  • needle, thread;
  • pencil, marker or chalk.

We put the foam rubber

Often, after the worn-out upholstery has been removed, it becomes clear that the filler must also be replaced. As a rule, in sofas it is foam rubber with a sintepon pad.

From the very beginning, we expose the frame, carefully removing all the pieces of the old filler in order to use it as a template. You may need to detach armrests and plywood elements that are bolted or self-tapping.

You can use foam rubber of the same thickness as the previous one, or slightly thicker. One by one, the blanks are installed on the sofa parts, fixed with construction glue. To protect the foam rubber from abrasion on the upholstery, it is covered with a layer of thin padding polyester.

At the final stage, all furniture elements that have a common constriction are fastened according to their original position; with separate upholstery, the parts must be left to wait for their turn.
