We make ourselves an original and comfortable bench around the tree. A garden bench around a tree is a great idea for a summer cottage

I already wrote that the place in your country house around the tree can be used to create. However, there is another great idea - you can arrange a wonderful garden bench under the canopy of the branches. This will create several seating places for your guests at once and save the cost of purchased country furniture. In addition, it is pleasant to sit on such a bench at any time of the day, sitting in the place where the shadow of the tree falls at that hour. Such a bench can serve as a very beautiful element of the country decor.

Probably one of the simplest circular benches can be built from logs dug into the ground under a tree along the perimeter in two rows and transverse bars fixed to it. On such a frame, flooring for a seat is made from polished boards. The back is made according to the same principle. The vertical legs of the rack can be braided with flexible hazel branches according to the wattle principle.

There is another great and very simple idea of how to equip a resting place under a tree. You can construct a podium under a tree like a patio. The main thing is to pre-level the soil under the flooring. On such a podium, you can scatter seating cushions or mattresses for resting in a horizontal position and arrange tubs of flowers.

The following idea will work for a Japanese-style garden. The low bench is made in the form of a walkway from several sections running along and across, which is so popular in Japanese gardens. On both sides, you can plant shade-loving ornamental plants and place a stone sculpture, for example, a fountain.

If you have carpentry skills and a set of necessary woodworking tools, you can create benches of more complex shapes, for example, such a spiral bench. It is made of several wide rounded planks that fit together.

To build a bench around a tree, you need to choose specially impregnated and thermally modified pine. Let's get started.

1. Make a bench template.

2. Creating a template.

The bench will have six equal-sized pieces.Measure the diameter of the tree.Add 15 cm for an adult tree, and 30 cm for young trees to keep the tree growing.Divide the sum by 4 to find the length of the short side of the single piece. Mark the amount on the measuring stick and saw off the edges of the stick at 30 degrees.

3. The size of the bench part.

Make a template for the first plank of the bench, using the previous dimensions, with the sawn off corners at 30 degrees.Lay three boards parallel to it, section them by centimetershims as shown in the figure.Attach the slats to the planks, taking into account the 30 degree angle of the first plank. Make a mark.

4. Cut the boards according to the marks.

Set the saw to 30 degrees.Cut the three bench planks that you marked in the previous step long with opposite corners at both ends.Repeat steps 3 and 4 and make the remaining 5 pieces of the bench.

5. Lay out all parts of the bench.

Assemble the pieces into a hexagonal bench on a flat surface using adding centimeterspacers between them, as shown in the figure.Starting from the inner seat board.Check how the corners fit.

6. Blanks for bench legs.

The legs consist of an outer and inner leg sandwiched between two supports.Cut 12 legs in order to collect 6 bezels to the height of the bench.(If the ground around the tree is uneven, the legs are made longer, so that later to level the bench by digging out the soil under them).Cut 12 supports. Saw off the end of each support at an angle of 30 degrees. This will be needed further to attach the apron.

7. Mark and drill the bolt holes.

Using a drill, drill 5 cm from the front edge of the outer support and make a mark on the vertical flat side of the support at this location.Repeat for the other side of the support.See the drawing.

8. Fasten the legs and supports together.

Insert bolts into each hole you made in the last step.Use an adjustable wrench to loosen all the bolts with washer and nut.Repeat these steps for the other five collected legs.

9. Beginning of assembly of sections

Place your feet upright on a flat surface and hold everything together with clamps.Put spacers between the boards, at the top of the leg assembly. The edge of the board should lie halfwayassembly legs. Secure the boards to your feet with self-tapping screws. Clip your legs to 4 sections. As it shown on the picture. You should have 2 groups of 2 sections.

10. Attach the last section.

Place two groups on opposite sides of the tree. Connect these groups with the remaining 2 sections.

11. Level the bench.

Use a spatula to deepen the bench legs to level the surface.

12. Cut and install the backrests.

13. Cut and install the apron.

Measure the distance between the long support points for each section.Cut six planks with 30-degree edges.Use a clamp to hold the block together.Drill pilot holes and attach it to the outer leg. Repeat these steps for the rest of the sections. Finish the bench by sanding any roughness.

Here's what we got. A comfortable and simple bench. In hot weather, you can hide under a tree with the whole family. You will enjoy your holiday with your favorite book throughout the summer.

To make a bench around a tree, you will need

  • planed lumber 45 x 70 mm (A), about 9 m
  • planed lumber 70 x 70 mm (H), about 2 m: 4 pieces 480 mm each
  • terrace boards 22 x 95 mm, about 30 m: 8 pieces of 520 mm each (C),
  • 8 pieces of 650 mm each (D), 40 pieces of different lengths (E)
  • screws
  • corners: 8 pieces

Features of lumber

If the dimensions of the bars and support boards are slightly different from those indicated here, it does not matter - the design remains unchanged. The outer frame must be square in any case; the length of both short sides is decisive; for the long sides, add double the thickness of the bar.

This bench, like all furniture and structures that are installed in the garden for a long time, is made of impregnated wood that is resistant to weather influences. All structural parts are impregnated under pressure. Pressure impregnated wood does not need to be stained, since impregnation is sufficient for protection, and since all sections are closed, they also do not need to be processed. Moisture can only be absorbed into the wood through the undersides of the legs, and therefore this surface must be coated with glaze or wood oil. A very good protection is also a wax-like compound for protecting the ends of wood, which covers the surface with a water-repellent layer.

The crown of the old willow tree, under which there is a bench, is light and airy, the leaves rustle from the slightest breath of wind. Leaning your back on the rough bark of the trunk is very pleasant

The location of the corners is clearly visible on the plan. The four legs have sufficient load capacity. ”If you are looking for heavy loads, you can install additional legs in the inner square. However, this can lead to difficulties with installation on uneven ground.

Prefer a homemade bench with a backrest?

The bench consists of four separate parts and four loose seats and backrests. The manufactured parts form an octagonal bench. The backrest slightly tilted back is very comfortable. Thanks to the clever design of the legs, with only two points of support on each seat, the bench is stable and very load-bearing. The inner diameter is 65 cm, which means that the bench is suitable for trees with a trunk girth of up to 200 cm.

Suitable wood for making a bench

The wood used in the garden must be weather resistant. Larch and tropical timber species are famous for their special natural endurance. In less resistant rocks, weather resistance is achieved through special treatment. For this, protective impregnations are used, which must be periodically renewed. Increasingly, pressure-impregnated softwood (especially pine) wood is used. Pine has many knots, but due to its fibrous structure, the impregnation penetrates deeply. Pressure impregnated timber does not require additional protection. Only the cut surfaces need to be processed.

We make a bench with our own hands - photos and work progress

  1. A bench around a tree can be built pretty quickly. Saw the frame and leg parts according to the dimensions in the bill of materials. A miter saw is useful for sawing seat boards that are chamfered at the ends by 22.5 grams.
  2. Connect the frame parts (A) using corners. Screw the corners flush to the ends of the four inner parts.
  3. Then align the parts in the desired position and secure the free sides of the corners.
  4. Legs (B) fit into the corners of the outer frame. On the one hand, they are fastened with four, on the other, with two screws.
  5. Support boards for the seat (C) at the end on both sides are beveled by 22.5 grams; the result is an obtuse angle of 135 degrees. The slices will subsequently be covered with planks (D).
  6. Saw off one end of the beveled seat board, then measure the length and saw off the other end. The first set of five boards will serve as a template for the rest of the segments.

An extraordinary bench around a tree or flower bed will harmoniously fit into the design of the garden. This homemade product will not only be a beautiful addition, but also an incredibly convenient and beautiful place for family members.

DIY materials and tools:
What do you need to create a do-it-yourself bench around a tree?

Planks
Hacksaw
Drill
Reiki
Primer
Wood screws
Fixing bolts
Cap nuts

Step one
The first step is to make recesses in the shortest plank of the seat. This is necessary in order for the back to fit snugly against it.

The notches are made as follows. The part is sawn off at both ends at an angle of 60 degrees. Two slats must be attached to it. The first is for the size of the back, and the second will be a support.

It is important to remember that the backrest will be at a 100-degree angle to the seat. To do everything right, you need to take a carpenter's square and mark an angle of 100 degrees on the seat and use a hacksaw to cut out a "complex wedge"

Also, remember that all six bench seats must be the same. In order not to be mistaken, you can use the first sawn-off boards under the seat as a template. This will greatly simplify the manufacturing process.

Step two
The cutter is used to round off the edges. The drill makes holes. And only after that you can start mounting the back.
By the way, before assembling the structure, you can treat the wood with a primer. This is to ensure that the product does not become unusable after a few weeks. Still, being outdoors harms the tree.

Step three. Final
The assembled seats and backs now need to be connected to each other. To do this, you need to take the fixing bolts and cap nuts. It is important to keep in mind that some parts may move during assembly. Therefore, you need to control this by increasing or decreasing the gaps between the parts to be fastened with bolts.

Conclusion
A bench around a tree or flower bed will perfectly fit into any garden decor. It is very convenient and beautiful. The advantage of such a homemade product is its simplicity of design. If you wish, you can decorate your garden and make an additional place to relax in the summer.

Connoisseurs of natural harmony strive to turn a place in the shade of a fragrant linden, a powerful oak or a compact chestnut into a cozy corner of relaxation and solitude.

For some summer residents, the best solution would be to put an ordinary bench under the tree, while others are looking for original ideas.

In any case, a lawn under a tree can not only fulfill an aesthetic function, but also carry a functional load, serving as a place for family tea drinking, an evening conversation with friends or lonely thoughtfulness.

How to create a flower bed under a tree

A flower bed around a tree looks impressive, and to inexperienced people in the street, this idea seems simple and easy to implement. However, when creating it, it is necessary to take into account the compatibility of the type of tree and the ornamental plants growing under it. There are species that do not tolerate any vegetation in the zone of the trunk circle. Such individual farmers include birch, willow, spruce, walnut, larch, maple, irgu, thuja and pine.

These tree species have a shallow root system and will oppress any closely growing plant, competing for nutrients and moisture. It is better to arrange the trunks of this group of trees in some other way than to create a flower garden doomed to death. Lawn grass will grow well under such trees.

However, with a strong desire in such cases, it is possible to create a certain elevation from the soil mixture in the form of a podium, the design of such a flower garden will be discussed in more detail below. Hazel and chestnut emit substances that are toxic to other plants.

Apple, pear, mountain ash, linden, oak, poplar, ash and fir easily let grassy neighbors under their crown, allowing you to create luxurious compositions.

Regardless of the type of tree, when planning and arranging a flower garden, you will need to take into account some more features of such a design project. Floral plants are selected only shade-tolerant and resistant to uneven moisture. These plants include all types of hosts, most ground covers, dwarf conifers, some perennials (berry, periwinkle, volzhanka, lily of the valley, saxifrage, lungwort, snowdrop, ferns, foxglove, violet, crow, slipper, horny goat, anemone) and bulbous.

As a rule, the flowering of shade-loving plants occurs in early spring, when the crown is still allowing enough sunlight to pass through. Although the main decoration of a shady flower bed is decorative foliage.

Before planting flowers around the tree, you need to properly prepare the place. First, the top layer of soil is removed. This is done very carefully so as not to damage the root system of the tree. In some cases, planting is carried out in "pockets" between thick root branches. The bottom of the dug hole should be lined with non-woven material to protect the root system and restrain its growth.

Next, a drainage layer of pebbles, broken brick or crushed stone 10 cm thick is necessarily laid out. The removed soil is replaced with a nutrient mixture of compost, sod land and peat with complex mineral fertilizers. If there are rhizomes of weeds, it is recommended to carefully select them. Seedlings are planted in moist soil. Free areas are mulched with sawdust or wood chips. Complex flower beds of plants with different habitus are designed according to the principle: the higher, the closer to the trunk.

The shape of the flower bed can be either round or asymmetrical. To prevent the soil from spilling out and not washed out during watering, the border of the flower garden must be marked using decorative stones or a border made of wood or plastic. The arrangement of flowers in a flower bed does not have to obey any scheme; chaotic compositions look interesting and natural.

DIY raised flower bed under a tree

When creating a flower bed under unfavorable trees, difficulties may arise associated with the many roots that penetrate the topsoil in the near-trunk circle. For the composition, perennials with deeply penetrating roots cannot be used; it is much more profitable to plant annuals (ageratum, begonia, amaranth, annual asters, succession, cloves, gatsania, lobelia, verbena).

To increase the space for the growth of the roots of flower crops, you can design a raised or multi-tiered flower bed in the area under the tree. To make the side of an asymmetric flower bed, you can use wooden slats and plastic bottles, and for a round one, bricks, old tires and a plastic border are suitable. It is easy and quick to make a square wooden box from planks. It is important that the height of the soil covering the tree trunk does not exceed 10 cm. If the root collar is slightly raised above the soil level, then the soil can be filled up even higher.

You can make a flower bed of logs in an original and inexpensive way. To do this, thick branches or the trunk of an old tree are sawn into cylinders 20-30 cm long, which, in turn, are split into halves. Ready-made curbs can be purchased at hardware stores. The prepared logs are treated with an antiseptic and dried.

Then the geotextile tape is cut off, to which the logs are attached with staples or nails. Geotextiles will protect the wood from moisture and extend the lifespan of the curb. At the next stage, the finished curb is buried in the soil around the tree and fixed with steel rods. After the layout of the non-woven material, the device for drainage and backfilling of the soil, the flower bed is ready for planting.

Resting place under a tree: bench and table

The area of the trunk circle can be not only beautiful, but also useful. A round, hexagonal or square bench around the trunk of a tree and a table will complement a well-kept garden without requiring a separate space. The bench and the table can have a different design, differing in style and complexity of execution.

Most often, garden furniture is arranged under birch, chestnut, walnut and willow. The basic rule: buildings should not fit snugly against the trunk, it is imperative to leave room for growth. Wood is more acceptable as a material, but metal and stone are also used.

Of the breeds, it is preferable to choose larch - the record holder for durability and resistance to external influences. Less expensive options are pine, acacia, spruce, and cherry.

The most common garden bench design is in the shape of a hexagon without a back or with a high back.

To make a simple bench with your own hands, you will need to perform the following work:

  • preparation of the material (wide boards for the seat, 12 bars about half a meter long for the legs, 6 slats for the backrest, small blanks for connection and self-tapping screws);
  • determination of the section size (largest side = trunk diameter + 15 cm, smallest inner side = length of the largest side / 1.75);
  • cutting of parts that make up each of the 6 sections, while the cut angle should be 30º;
  • processing of all parts and places of cuts with an antiseptic, followed by drying;
  • assembly of sections, consisting in fixing the seat slats to meter-long transverse boards;
  • assembly of legs, consisting in fixing the outer and inner legs to a common wide bar using self-tapping screws, the result should be 6 prefabricated elements;
  • fixing adjacent sections to the legs, while you should get two parts of 3 sections each;
  • fastening parts around the tree;
  • installation of backrest parts;
  • the finished structure is coated with a wax-containing impregnation.

A table around a tree of the simplest design consists of a metal frame with bars, fixed around the trunk, and a table top, consisting of several sections. The connection between the frame and the table top is carried out by means of wooden planks.

How to arrange a gazebo around a tree?

If the creation of a flower bed and a bench seems too simple and unoriginal, you can think about building something more ambitious, for example, a gazebo or a cozy recreation area.

The area under the tree can be a great place for an outdoor garden gazebo. At the same time, the crown of the tree will serve as a natural canopy from the scorching sun, and if the shade does not seem enough, then actinidia can be planted - a fruiting vine weaving along the branches with large leaves that protect from the sun and small summer rain.

A garden gazebo around the tree serves as a comfortable place not only for active relaxation and communication, but can also be an excellent corner for sleeping and reading. Its design can be very different, the design depends on the general style of the garden. A simplified solution is a small wooden deck podium.

If you add a low fence to the raised flooring, you get a rather simple open gazebo.

For those who want to create more monumental structures and, so to speak, rise above the ground, we can advise buildings on high wooden posts. They look quite impressive, and allow you to enjoy the picturesque view of the site to your heart's content.

All the considered design ideas for decorating the site in the area of the trunk circle can be actively used in any garden area, adding new details and modifying the proposed appearance of the building. In addition to the options presented, the area around the tree can be decorated with pebbles, sowed with grass or mulched with chips. In some design styles, this minimalism is the best choice.
