Installation of a latch in an interior door. How to install a mortise latch and handle on a door

To prevent drafts and changes in the temperature inside the room, a balcony latch is placed on the balcony door, which helps prevent street air from entering the living space. Indeed, on the street, most often, it is much colder or hotter than the optimum room temperature. Latches come in several types, differ both in the principle of operation and in the materials from which they are made. Installation does not require special knowledge and skills, but the easiest way is to install a magnetic latch.

Varieties

There are two types of latches on the door - mechanical and magnetic, and various modifications have not yet been invented. The most common and successful performances will now be discussed.

  • Magnetic latches

An excellent option, since this type of balcony latch has all the possible advantages: the maximum possible noiselessness in operation, ease of installation and operation, a much longer service life, unlike other types of this fitting. The action of the magnetic latch is based on the adhesion of a metal plate attached to the door to a strong magnet attached to the door frame.

When the parts of the mechanism approach each other, the door itself attracts and closes tightly, while there is no need to create additional force, as with mechanical types of locks. True, there is a small minus that it is impossible to adjust the strength of the magnetic door coupling, sometimes it is not enough, which is easy to fix by installing another magnetic latch.

The magnetic latch is very easy to install

  • Mechanical latches

There are different types, first of all, this is the division into plastic and metal, as well as roller, ball, file, and so on.

Plastic ones are the cheapest, but they also show themselves the worst in work, they have a short service life, jamming is possible or, conversely, which is most often, a weak coupling.

Roller, metal ones are a more reliable option, they all consist of the same two parts, a fixing plate and a movable roller that rotates on its axis and is fixed in the plate. Of the mechanical options - the best, has the ability to slightly adjust the rigidity of the hitch, while being more durable, unlike other types of mechanical locks. Ball bearings differ from roller ones in that the ball is most often poorly fixed in its grooves and therefore its service life is shorter.

Latch latches are distinguished by the most reliable fixation, not a single wind will open such a latch, it is advisable to use it in wooden balcony doors. When used on plastic doors, it is worth considering that you will also have to make a through handle.

Mechanical latch is the most reliable option

Installation

It is advisable to install any latches in the immediate vicinity in height from the door handle, since then you will not have to resort to additional pressure on the door at the holder installation site.

Plastic doors generally already come with a latch, and therefore, when installing / buying a door, immediately choose the desired balcony latch.

If the door is already there, then installation is also not difficult:

  1. Remove the nearest screw to the door handle on the end of the door.
  2. Screw an additional part of the lock there (a roller or a holder bar), while it is worth picking up a screw longer than the one that was unscrewed earlier in order to securely fasten the fittings.
  3. Close the door, mark with a pencil on the door jamb a place for the second part of the locking mechanism
  4. Screw the second part (holder or magnet) into the grooves of the jamb, exactly at the mark.

If the old fittings fail, you will have to dismantle it and install a new one according to the plan.

The installation of magnetic locks is simpler, they do not require special accuracy as for mechanical locks, since the plate will be attracted to the magnet in any case, however, with a completely ugly installation, the magnet will attract much worse.

The latch to the balcony of the mechanical principle of operation requires an exact match between the fixing plate and the hitch mechanism itself. It is also worth noting that the reliability of a mechanical latch is much greater than that of a magnetic one. When installing such a latch on a plastic door, certain difficulties may arise. Also, when fastening, you should pay attention to the screws used - they should not protrude from their sockets, as this will lead to jamming and the inability to use the door in normal mode.

When installing fittings on wooden bases, there are some differences:

  1. Old wooden doors with outdated non-working fittings are often used, so the old parts of the locking mechanisms will have to be removed.
  2. Ball and roller latches will have to be recessed into the door leaf also closer to the door handle. To do this, a selection is made in the tree for the latch (its main part) and securely screwed to the door with screws.
  3. Precisely marking the place for the additional part on the jamb of the doorway, if necessary, we make a selection in the jamb for the fixing plate and fasten it with screws.

When installing magnetic locks on wooden doors, there is no difference what will be on the door, a magnet or a plate, it all depends on the desire of the master and the specific situation.

For the comfort of using any kind and type of mechanism, it is imperative to install the so-called smoker's handle on the outside of the door, so that it is convenient to close the door behind you and open it. A very handy item! Just a piece of plastic and a couple of screws, but so many pluses.

It is important to choose and install the latch on the balcony correctly

Malfunctions and the fight against them

Basically, this paragraph refers to mechanical types of latches. So often you have to tighten the spring on roller or ball mechanisms. If the door bevels or sags on mechanical devices, the fixing plate will have to be screwed over, otherwise the ball or roller will not be able to enter its groove.

In order to enhance the action of the mechanical mechanism, you will have to pull it out of the door, unscrew the spring fastening nut on the reverse side. Then, either by pulling out the spring, slightly stretch it, or place a nut or washer of a suitable size under it. Then screw the cap into place. Often there are mechanisms without a fixing nut, but with slots on the sides of the spring. In this case, you will have to compress the spring with a screwdriver, and put a nut or washer under its base.

Magnetic latches do not require repair, the only failure may be damage to the magnet or its demagnetization, but in these cases you will have to change the latch.

Any person has to periodically face the need to do something for the first time in his life. If you have decided to install latch handles in the interior doors of your apartment, but have never done anything like this before, at first glance, you may get the feeling that it is not easy to do it yourself, and it is better to resort to the help of a specialist. However, in fact, the technology for installing a latch handle on an interior door is quite simple, the main thing is to follow the instructions. If you have all the necessary tools at home (a square, an awl, a pencil, a drill with a drill bit and a crown with a diameter of 50 mm, a hammer, a chisel, a screwdriver or a screwdriver, a marker), then the process of installing a latch door handle will take you no more than one and a half hours.

Handles with latches can be conditionally divided into three types:
1) simple handles without a latch - used in rooms that do not need to be locked either from the inside or from the outside;
2) handles with a latch, that is, a mechanism that allows you to lock the door while inside the room;
3) latch handles with a key connector on the outside and a latch on the inside, that is, with the ability to lock the door both from the inside and from the outside.

According to the type of mechanism, the latch handles are divided into latch handles and handles-knobs (knobs). Fall handles look like a lever and include a push mechanism that is actuated at the moment the lever is pressed (usually from top to bottom). Knob handles have a round or spherical shape and a rotary mechanism that performs its functions when the handle is rotated.

As a rule, in stores and building supermarkets, door latch handles are sold complete with all the necessary parts, a special key, as well as installation instructions and a door leaf marking scheme with all dimensions.

The very process of installing a latch handle on an interior door is almost the same for all handle options, regardless of the features of their device and the mechanisms used in its design. Consider the process of mounting the latch handle in more detail.

First of all, you need to markup - using the template scheme available in the kit, or on your own. Having determined the height of the door handle that is comfortable for you (usually it is 90-100 cm from the floor surface), you need to make an appropriate mark with a simple pencil on the door leaf. The center of the future hole for the handle should be at a distance of 60 mm from the edge of the door, this point should be noted. Then the markup should be transferred to the end of the door - usually a square is used for this, which allows you to draw a pencil line strictly perpendicular to the edge of the door. At the end of the door leaf, strictly in the middle, it is necessary to mark the center of the drawn line with an awl. It is not necessary to make a mark on the other side of the door leaf at a distance of 60 mm from the edge, but it is still recommended for the convenience of further work.

The next step is to make holes for the handle in the interior door leaf. In total, you should end up with three holes - one at the end of the door and two - on the outside and inside, respectively. To make a hole in the end part, you will need a drill with a pen drill, using which you should drill a hole with a diameter of 23-24 mm at the end of the door leaf. Next, proceed to drilling the remaining two holes. To do this, you need to install a crown with a diameter of 50 mm on the drill. It is important to consider that in order to preserve the coating of the door leaf, it makes sense to drill a hole for the latch handle on each side separately, because if you drill one through hole using a drill on only one side, there is a risk of damage to the coating when the drill exits to the opposite side of the leaf. After completing this step, you should have three neat holes in the interior door leaf.

Now we move on to installing the latch mechanism itself in the door. Having placed the mechanism in the hole on the end of the door leaf, you should carefully trace the front cover on the end of the door along the contour with a simple pencil. Then we remove the mechanism and, using a hammer and a chisel, carefully make a groove on the end of the door along the outlined contour in accordance with the thickness of the front lining. As a result, the overlay should be located in the same plane with the end of the leaf, not protruding outward, but not "drowning" in the thickness of the door, that is, it must be installed flush. When this goal is achieved, it remains only to mark, attach the bar, and drill holes for the screws in the end of the door, with which the lining will be attached to the canvas - the holes should be slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the screws, and screw the latch mechanism with the lining to the door using screwdriver or screwdriver.

Then you need to install the actual handles in the door leaf. To do this, on one side, insert an overlay with a square-shaped rod into the latch mechanism, making sure that the rod itself and the screw bushings enter the corresponding holes in the latch. After that, you need to disassemble the second part using a special key (it is also included in the latch handle kit), namely, press the internal latch located on the side of the handle, and then remove the decorative trim with the same key. Now we install the inner lining on the square rod installed on the other side of the door leaf, after which both parts of the structure must be firmly tightened using the fixing screws, also supplied with the latch. Next, attach the removed decorative trim to the hole and insert the handle into the hole. There are two options for inserting, depending on the shape of the latch - if it is beveled, then during the installation of the second handle on the door you will hear a click, which means that the mechanism is in place. If the shape of the latch is not beveled, then for the final fixation of the handle, it should be pressed.

And the last step in installing the latch door handle will be mounting the striker on the door frame canvas. To indicate a specific place where the “tongue” of the latch will touch the jamb, you can, for example, mark the tip of the “tongue” with a washable marker, then close and open the door 2-3 times, leaving a “tongue” mark on the door frame. In this place, it will be necessary to drill an appropriate recess, then attach the reciprocal bar to the resulting hole and circle it with a pencil. Similarly to making a groove at the end of the door, with a hammer and a chisel we make a groove for the reciprocal bar so that it also stands flush with the surface of the jamb. After that, using an awl, it is necessary to mark the places where the holes for the screws will be, drill them, observing the same rule as in the case of the end of the door - the diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws themselves. Then, using a screwdriver or a screwdriver, we fasten the striker to the door frame and enjoy the results of the work done.

The door latch handle is a useful, practical and beautiful thing. Installing it on your own is not difficult; this requires the availability of tools and desire. Detailed instructions will help you quickly and efficiently cope with this work.

Types of latch handles

The construction market offers a wide variety of latch handles of various shapes and styles, but such handles differ only in mechanisms. The mechanism of the handle-latch is a fall, that is, movable - the latch is triggered by turning or pressing the handle. Therefore, there are two types of mechanisms:

  • Push mechanism. It is set in motion by pressing the handle lever.
  • Swivel mechanism. It is set in motion by turning the knob-knob (ball or knob).

The material for the manufacture of handles can be different: aluminum, brass, steel, various alloys, stainless steel. Each of the parts is covered with a special protective layer to improve performance and extend the life of the product. Latch handles are available with a simple latch, with a latch and a latch, or with a latch, a latch and a conventional simple lock.

What to look for when buying

  1. You need to know exactly which way the doors open - there are handles with different rotation options - right or left.
  2. You need to know the thickness of the door (door leaf). This is necessary when choosing a set of handles.
  3. Be sure to make sure that the mechanism is working properly: it must work silently. When pressing the handle, the tongue should fully go inside the case. The appearance of the products must be flawless and pleasant to the touch.

What is the latch handle made of?

It should be noted that the device of a door handle with a latch with both a push mechanism and a rotary one is the same:

  • Internal mechanism
  • two handles
  • Retainer
  • Decorative overlays

The internal mechanism of the latch handle is called a fall, that is, it is opened by turning the handle, there is nothing complicated in it. The basis of such a locking device is an oblique tongue held by a spring.

When the door is open, the latch tongue is in the extended position. Thanks to the latch, the door can be slammed without using the handle. When the door is closed, the tongue enters the striker in the door jamb. To open the latch back, you should turn the handle, this will remove the tongue inside the lock.

Handles with latch latch - the best option for interior doors. The most popular are the latch handles with a latch. On the one hand, they are equipped with a rotary button (latch), which makes it possible to lock the door from inside the room. In a house where there are small children, it is best to install knobs, they are also most often installed on the doors of bathrooms or bathrooms.

How to install a latch handle

The process of installing the handle on the door is divided into three stages:

  1. markup
  2. Drilling holes in the door
  3. Mounting and fastening

Regardless of the choice of mechanism, the latch handle is installed in the same way in each case. Depending on the manufacturer, the assembly / disassembly of the handle itself may differ slightly. To do this, instructions are attached to each mechanism. If several doors open into one zone, it is advisable to purchase the same handles and make sure that they are located at the same height from the floor. Usually, experts say that an interior door handle with a latch should be installed at the level of a person’s waist, so that when opening the door, the arm is bent at 90 0 at the elbow. But the growth of all living in the house is not the same. That is why door handles are installed on average at a height of 80 - 120 cm from the floor. On the new door leaf (at the end) there is usually a mark for installing a handle or lock - a drawn key.

what you need to install

What design and type of mechanism the handle will have, everyone decides for himself. Naturally, any handle should be comfortable and fit beautifully into the overall interior of the room. A clear instruction on how to install a door handle will help you quickly and efficiently cope with this task yourself. Standard basic door installation kit includes:

  • The guide drill on a tree spiral. Diameter 6mm;
  • Feather drill. Diameter 23-24 mm;
  • Crown on wood. Diameter 50 mm;
  • Chisel.

You will also definitely need: a screwdriver, a drill, a tape measure, a square, a hammer, a pencil. In the hardware store, you can purchase the main “Kit for installing mortise locks and handles” as a set.

step one: markup

At this stage, it is necessary to correctly mark up all the necessary holes. It is best to remove the door, so it will be more convenient to work. Sometimes door manufacturers clearly indicate the place for mounting the handle (depending on the texture of the door). This rule must be followed. It is also quite natural that if there are kids in the house, then the handles on the door to the nursery and the bathroom should be set slightly lower than the usual height.

Attention! Installation of the latch counterplate on the frame is carried out after mounting the latch handle on the door.

The height of the handle is planned according to the selected parameter, within 80-120 mm from the floor. It should be remembered that if there are several doors nearby, then it is more aesthetically pleasing to place all the handles at the same height. After determining the required height, the center of the handle is marked. A square is applied to the edge of the door and a horizontal line 60 cm long is drawn. A clear mark should be placed in this place.

Next, you need to mark up the tongue of the latch handle. At the end of the door leaf, the center of the door thickness is marked along a horizontal line. Now you should attach the mechanism relative to the center so that the tongue completely protrudes beyond the borders of the canvas, exactly as it will look like when finished. It is necessary to outline the tongue on both sides - in this place a place for the mechanism will be drilled.

step two: drilling holes

The hole for the handle mechanism in the door leaf is made with a wood crown. Drilling should always not be through, but first on one side of the door, then on the other to half the thickness of the door. To better see the depth of entry of the crown into the door leaf, you can make a mark on it with a marker.

When drilling through, the crown at the exit on the other side will damage the door leaf or may go to the side. The drill must be held at an angle of 90 0, avoiding deviations. The hole for the tongue of the mechanism is drilled using a guide and a feather drill. The pilot drill clearly marks the hole for subsequent reaming with a pocket drill. Such a drill is selected according to the diameter of the tongue (slightly larger), a 22 mm drill is usually suitable.

Work in this place must be done very carefully at a low drill speed, since only about 6 mm remains to the edges. A latch mechanism is inserted into the drilled hole and a place is marked for the tongue plate. The extra tree is selected with a chisel clearly along the marking lines. The plate should be applied periodically. A plate correctly sunk into the wood should lie in the same plane as the end of the door.

step three: attaching the latch handle

A mechanism is inserted into the hole and a plate under the latch is screwed with screws. For convenience, with a thin drill, you can mark the places where the screws are screwed in, so they will enter clearly in the right place, without distortions.

When the bolts are visible, one handle is inserted first (it is necessary to get into the latch holes with two guides), then the second handle is superimposed on the other side and the whole structure is pulled together with bolts.

If the bolts are not visible, the handle should be disassembled and the cover plate removed. To do this, a special key is included in the kit, you need to find a stupor on the handle, press it with the key and pull the handle - the design will be sorted out.

Next, you need to install a collapsible structure and also bolt it. Then snap the cap and pressing the stopper, secure the handle. To do this easily, you need to find exactly where the hole is located. If everything is properly aligned, the flat tip fits into the hole without difficulty.

installation of a metal plate on the box

Marking for a metal plate is performed in two ways. In the first method, you can smear the latch tongue with oil or, for example, toothpaste. Press the handle and close the door. Then lightly close and open the latch several times, while marks will be made on the box. In the second method, the door is closed, a metal ruler is inserted between the box and the door, first above the tongue, then below it, while marks are made with a pencil.

A hole for the tongue is drilled with a pen drill. If, after checking, the tongue, when entering the box, completely leaves the latch, then a contour under the plate is outlined and cut with a chisel.

The plate should be level with the door frame, it is recessed into the door frame and screwed on with screws. Now you can close the door, admire your work and check how the latch door handle works - the installation is completed at this stage.

The latch should move freely, the handle should work with light pressure, and the door should close easily.

There is nothing particularly difficult in the installation of the door handle. It is quite possible to install the door handle latch with your own hands. You can learn more about all the nuances from the presented video.

If a lock is an indispensable element of fittings for an entrance door, then it is rarely installed on interior structures. To ensure that the door can be closed and prevent access to the room, a latch is usually installed. Depending on the type of locking mechanism used, doors can only be locked in the closed position or blocked and restrict access to the room. Such structures can be installed both on interior doors and on gates, in office, industrial and other premises.

The device and purpose of the door latch

Modern latches differ in appearance, size and design. Despite this, they all have one purpose - to hold the door leaf in a closed but unlocked position. Some models of latches have a latch that allows you to block the doors from the inside, after which access to the room from the outside will be impossible. Such devices are usually installed at the entrance to the bathroom or toilet, but they can be mounted on any other door.

The door latch keeps the canvas in the closed position

The latch allows you to securely fix the door leaf in the closed position. This is true, for example, when a door separates a heated and unheated room and it is necessary to keep the heat in the house. Through tightly closed doors, extraneous noise will not penetrate into the room. If the room has air conditioning, then for its effective operation in the summer it is also necessary that the door be closed.

If a draft occurs, the door leaf can open abruptly and injure a child or even an adult. The presence of a latch on it allows you to securely fix the doors, so this possibility will be completely excluded.

A quality door latch should have the following characteristics:

  • reliable fixation of the canvas in the closed position. It should not open from a draft or a light touch on the door;
  • noiselessness. When the locking device is in operation, there should be no loud clicks;
  • uninterrupted work. The mechanism must work reliably and not break, so you need to choose devices designed for the maximum number of work cycles.

Features of choice

There are different types of door latches. Depending on the model and type, they may consist of the following components:

Modern door latches are classified according to several criteria:

  1. Mechanism type:
    • magnetic, file or roller. Such valves are usually installed on interior doors;
    • sliding - installed at the entrance to the house, apartment, office;
    • electromechanical or electromagnetic - mounted on gates, entrances to the entrance of the house or on the doors of protected objects.
  2. Installation method:
  3. Availability of additional functions:

Among the advantages of door latches it should be noted:

  • simplicity of design;
  • Ease of use;
  • long service life;
  • reliable fixation of the door leaf in the closed position, which allows to provide heat and sound insulation of the room.

There are practically no serious shortcomings in such devices. Its main disadvantages:

  • some models, when the tongue hits the reciprocal part, make a loud click, which can create a certain inconvenience;
  • with prolonged use of such fittings, scratches and grooves remain on the reciprocal plate, which spoils its appearance.

Types of door latches

Let's take a closer look at each type of door latch:

  1. Fallen. In order to close the door with a latch latch, it is necessary to apply a certain force, in which the beveled tongue slides along the reciprocal plate and snaps into place, fixing the door leaf. If such a device is correctly installed, then it will be possible to open the door only after pressing the handle or turning the key. Handles can be installed on one side of the door only or on both sides. Latch latches can be equipped with two locks: one opens with a handle, and the second is independent and works like a latch. The handles of such mechanisms perform not only their direct purpose, but also decorate the doors, so they must match the interior of the room.

    The latch has a bevelled tongue

  2. Roller. In this case, a rotating roller or tongue, beveled on both sides, acts as a crossbar. Such a latch can be placed both on the door leaf and on the box. When the door closes, the spring-loaded roller enters the hole in the striker and secures the leaf in the closed position. The roller latch can be installed as a separate device or work as part of a lock on both swing and pendulum doors. It is not connected with the handle or other locking bolts on the lock. It will not work to fully close the door with a roller latch, since when you press on it with a certain force, it will open.

    For roller latches, a rotating roller usually acts as a bolt

  3. Magnetic. The principle of operation of such devices is based on the property of a magnet to attract metal parts. Magnetic latches are often used both in residential areas and in offices. They allow you to fix the sash in the closed position, and it requires little effort to open it. One part of such a device is fixed at the end of the leaf, and the other - on the door frame. After the door is closed, the magnet is attracted to the metal striker and the canvas fixes the door in the closed position. There are simple models that are similar to those that are installed on furniture, only they have a greater pulling force. Some modifications of magnetic latches have a bolt that retracts into a hole on the counterpart. This latch can only be opened with a rotary or push handle.

    The operation of a magnetic latch is based on the property of a magnet to attract metal objects.

  4. Retractable. In this case, the developers combined the functions of a lock and a latch in one device. Such devices do not have a handle, so they can be opened from the inside with a turntable or from the outside with a key. Almost all such models have a latch, which, if necessary, allows you to hide the spring-loaded bolt in the latch body. When it is hidden and locked, spontaneous closing of the mechanism is excluded, but in this case the door will not be fixed in the closed position and may open at any time.

    The sliding latch can only be opened with a handle, some models can be opened with a key

  5. Electromechanical and electromagnetic. Such devices allow you to remotely close and open doors, so they are usually installed on gates or at the entrances to protected premises. For electromagnetic devices, it is necessary to additionally install an autonomous power supply. This is due to the fact that in the absence of power supply they are in an open state. There are the following types of latches:
    • normally open. When the power is turned off, these latches are in the open position. They are usually installed on emergency exits, as well as on access doors. In the event of an emergency when there was a power outage, people can safely leave the premises;

      In the absence of power, the normally open latch is in the open state.

    • normally closed. In the absence of electricity, such latches are in the closed position. This allows you to ensure the safety of the premises in the event of a power failure. In such cases, you can open the latch from the inside with a handle, and from the outside - with a key;

      Without voltage, the latch is in the closed position

    • with locking function. When power is applied, the latch is unlocked and remains in this position until the door is opened once. After the tongue has been drawn into the body, it is fixed there with the help of special pins and can be held at any time until the door is used.

Installing door latches

If you have elementary carpentry skills, even a beginner will not have problems installing a latch on an interior door. To install such a device, you will need the following tools:

The installation process of the mortise latch consists of the following steps:

  1. Installation height selection. For ease of use and ensuring good fixation of the canvas, it is recommended to install door latches at a height of 80 to 110 cm - it all depends on the height of the residents.
  2. Door leaf marking. At a previously determined height, the location of the latch is marked, after which it is applied to the end of the door and circled with a pencil. If the device has a handle, then on both sides of the canvas mark the places where it will be installed.

    A latch is applied to the end of the door and the place of its installation is marked.

  3. Hole preparation. At the end of the door inside the marked contour, holes of the required depth are drilled with a drill. After that, they level it using a chisel and a hammer. Also make a hole for attaching the handle. If there is a milling cutter, then this work is done easier and faster. To prevent chipping, holes for the handle are drilled on both sides of the door so that the drill comes in about half the thickness of the leaf.

    Drill holes for mounting the latch and handle

  4. Preparing a place for the latch bar. Check whether the mechanism enters the prepared hole. If not, then the niche is slightly expanded with a hammer and chisel. After that, insert the latch into the prepared groove and circle its overlay with a pencil. The device is pulled out and a small indentation is made so that the latch bar becomes level with the end of the door.

    With the help of a chisel and a hammer, recesses are made for mounting the latch bar

  5. Latch installation. Install the latch in the prepared place and fix it with self-tapping screws. To make the screws easier to screw in and not lick their heads, experts recommend first making holes for them with a thin drill. If the latch has a handle, then insert a four-sided pin, put handles on it and fix them, and then mount the decorative lining.

    The latch is fixed with self-tapping screws, after making holes for them with a thin drill

  6. Reciprocal installation. In order to accurately determine the location of the striker on the door frame, it is necessary to lubricate the tongue with toothpaste and close the doors. A trace will remain on the frame, to which the counterpart is applied and the place of its attachment is marked. Using a hammer and a chisel on the frame, prepare a recess for the tongue and fix the reciprocal bar.

    The striker is mounted on the frame opposite the latch

Mounting the overhead latch is much easier and faster:

How to disassemble a door latch

Sometimes it becomes necessary to disassemble the door latch. This may be required when:

  • there was a creak or jamming during the operation of the mechanism;
  • it is necessary to lubricate and clean the locking device;
  • it is necessary to change the failed parts;
  • decided to completely replace the latch.

Depending on the type of latch installed, the sequence of work may vary slightly. The procedure for disassembling a mechanism equipped with a push or rotary knob will be as follows:

After that, the reasons that led to the failure of the latch are established:

Interroom doors are equipped with latches. These are doors to rooms, kitchen, living room or bath. Rooms that require the latch to be fixed in the closed state are equipped with a device with an additional locking mechanism. How is it different from simple latches and how to install it?

What is an additional locking mechanism?

Additional locking mechanism - these are locking mechanisms that are activated only from the side of the room. No key is used to actuate them, usually they are executed in the form of a small rotating element, which is actuated.

latch tongue

Such devices are installed on the entrance metal doors in various forms:

  • overhead locks with one-sided use;
  • doviators;
  • castles-crabs.

The idea of the purpose of additional locking has probably already developed. The mechanism leaves the door closed on one side, regardless of the main locking mechanism.

So, for example, interior doors are equipped with a latch that opens on both sides. If the entrance to the living room or kitchen, then it should work, privacy is not required for these rooms. But the room doors or to the bath or toilet are closed from the inside to exclude the possibility of unpleasant situations.

For this, the canvases are not equipped with locks, they are equipped with the same mechanisms as on other doors of the premises, but with one characteristic feature. They have an additional locking mechanism that will not allow the latch to open. If it is fixed from the inside by this mechanism, then the handle does not fully function, a certain obstacle arises.

Elements that actuate additional locks are installed on the handle, if these are knobs, or on the bar, this option is typical for push-fitting types of fittings.

Based on this, it turns out that the hidden mechanism in the case will not change the installation method. Therefore, they install such latches with an additional function, as well as simple ones.

Types of latches

Latches are installed on swing doors. They are a simple type of locking mechanism. Sliding structures have a different type of fittings.

The main feature is the ability to lock the canvas without using a key. For entrance doors, its functional feature adds convenience when forgetting to close the door behind you. Latches allow you to keep them closed. It also brings certain problems if you leave, forgetting the keys, and slam it shut. To get inside, you will have to call a specialist or learn how to break the lock mechanisms.

There are the following types of door latches:

  • magnetic. This type keeps the door closed even if it is not self-locking;

Magnetic latch
  • fake. They are made in an oblique shape with a spring tongue;
  • roller. The design has rotating rollers on springs;
  • sliding are presented as latches and locking bolts;
  • electromechanical. These are controlled by remote or programmed keys, as well as the introduction of a code.

The first three representatives are found on the interior and entrance doors, including those facing the courtyard. Sliding elements are typical for the entrance doors of apartments and offices. Electromechanical latch control is found on driveways and gates to the yard.

When using latches in interior doors, accidental drafts and swinging of doors, movement of the leaf due to skew and improper installation of the door structure, spontaneous opening and slamming, which cause mechanical damage to the entire structure, are prevented.

Additional locking mechanisms close the room from the inside when necessary. For example, you can latch-only lock your front door without using the main lock when you are at home.

How to install latches with an additional locking mechanism

To make a correct installation, you will need certain skills in using the following tools:

Tools
  • construction square;
  • pencil or marker;
  • crown with a tail for wood;
  • centering drill with a diameter of about 5 cm;
  • bit;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • drill with a diameter of 4 mm for wood;
  • electric drill.

Armed with these tools, they begin to mount the part on the door leaf. Installing the device using these tools means that it has never been installed on the canvas. Specialists perform such operations, even on the door installed on the box, very quickly. But for beginners, it is better to prepare the canvas for inserting the lock mechanism by installing it in place.

  • Install the door frame on the opening. At the same time, make sure that it is strictly in a rectangular shape. This is necessary so that the door is installed with the same clearance.
  • Mark the locations of the hinges.
  • After the hinges are installed, check the size and symmetry of the gaps and the tightness of the closing of the door leaf.

This carries out the preparatory work that is necessary in order to install the latch accurately with the correct web configuration. The next step is to install the latch.

Attention! The location of the handle from the bottom of the canvas should be at a distance of 1 meter. Although the fittings are installed, taking into account the physical characteristics of a particular person.

Cheap doors are made from MDF. They are reinforced with timber. For such doors, it is advised to use a mortise lock installed at a height of 1 m. This is necessary in certain cases to cut the door from below for ventilation of the room or final height adjustment. How to install a door latch with an additional locking mechanism.

  • The mechanism comes with a paper template. It is applied to the end side of the canvas at a height of 1 meter and at a distance of 7 cm from the edge. The depth depends on the latch type.
  • Close the door and make a through hole. This is done with a wood crown using a center drill.

Drill bit
  • Next, a hole is prepared for the locking mechanism. Marking is carried out by eye. To do this, match the tongue of the handle and the end of the door leaf.

Preparation of recess for the locking mechanism
  • A pen is inserted into the prepared hole, and the size of the sample under the lock bar is marked with a pencil. With the help of a chisel and a hammer, the wood is removed to the required depth. After that, the handle is fixed to the screws that come with the accessories in the kit.
  • Knobs have parts from the inside and outside, which are connected with protection screws. After that, a decorative ring is mounted using a spring mechanism.
  • The door closes, the latch will leave marks on the door frame, along which the counterpart is installed.
  • Following the traces of the latch tongue, a place is marked for sampling with a pen drill. If necessary, correct the broken parts with a chisel.
  • After the place is ready on the door frame for installing the latch tabs, a couple of millimeters of wood are removed so that the bar is even with the door frame. Then it is screwed on with screws.

Push handle with latch

After performing the above steps, we can assume that the latch has been successfully installed. Remove the remains of wood shavings and check the operation of the fittings. Details should not interfere with the tight closing of the door, locks should work without jamming and lapping of parts with each other.

The sequence of actions is much simpler if you want to replace the old latch with a new one. If there is a feeling that the operation is beyond your strength, then it is better to use the services of professional carpenters.
