Clerodendrum - home care. Clerodendrum and caring for it at home: photo of a flower

Clerodendrum (Clerodendrum) from the large Verbenaceae family is represented by about 350 species of climbing vines, shrubs, evergreen and deciduous trees. Some varieties of Clerodendrum are perfectly adapted for growing at home. Lovers of flowering indoor plants appreciate miniature bushes for large oval-pointed leaves with serrated, simple or solid edges, as well as for graceful flowers that look like butterflies, bells, Chinese lanterns. The flowers of some types of clerodendrum exude a very fragrant, unique smell.

The name of this wonderful houseplant can be translated from Greek as the Tree of Destiny. Some historical sources claim that clerodendrum had a huge symbolic meaning for the Indonesian people. For example, in Javanese legend, this tree brought happiness to lovers. In previous articles, we told you about what house plants are customary to give to each other: newlyweds can be presented with a miniature myrtle tree as a gift - a symbol of family happiness, unmarried girls give spathiphyllum - a symbol of female happiness, and men - anthurium - a symbol of male happiness. In some countries of Western Europe, clerodendrum represents innocent love and a happy destiny. What is not a gift for a young girl loving girl from a loved one? Some needlewomen make very beautiful jewelry and crafts in the form of clerodendron flowers from satin ribbons (kanzashi), natural silk, chiffon, nylon, cold porcelain, polymer clay, corrugated paper and other materials at hand.

There are several types of clerodendrum, caring for which at home is quite simple and does not require specific knowledge. Photos of these plants, as well as useful tips for growing, can be found below. It should be noted that some phytodesigners are happy to use curly ligneous vines to decorate floristic compositions, for vertical landscaping of various interior objects. By cutting off all but one of the old shoots and pinching the emerging apical ones, you can make a miniature standard tree from the clerodendrum with lush crown in the form of a topiary, which will be interesting to look in a composition with such unpretentious houseplants as Benjamin's ficus, Crassula Money tree, Zamioculcas Dollar tree, Dracaena Marginata, homemade yucca, chlorophytum with hanging narrow leaves, monstera.

The most unpretentious and popular among lovers of flowering indoor plants is the Thompson's clerodendrum (Clerodendrum thomsoniae). This is a very beautiful curly ligneous vine with shiny dark green oval leaves. But main feature of this species are unusual flowers that adorn the plant during the extended flowering period in spring and summer. Dazzling white flowers with bright red "droplets" and long stamens, similar to Chinese lanterns, look gorgeous against a green background of large leaves. Flowers with petals in the form of inverted cups are collected in racemose inflorescences. Interestingly, the color of the petals of Thompson's Clerodendrum changes during the flowering period. Bright droplets at the end of the flower turn blood red, and then - dark cherry color. The snow-white cups change color to pale pink, and then to lilac or lilac.

With timely pruning and pinching, Thompson's Clerodendrum can be turned into a lush bush. Trimming should be done at the beginning spring period, cutting off old shoots by about a third, and the pinching can be done at any time during the growing season when the plant is actively growing and developing. If you plan to grow clerodendrum as climbing vines, direct the plant shoots up several supports.

Popular among our gardeners species also include such evergreen shrubs as Clerodendrum speciosissimum, Clerodendrum fragrans, Clerodendrum philippinum with the smell of Clerodendrum philippinum (Clerodendrum philippinum) with the smell of Clerodendrum philippinum (Clerodendrum philippine) ... Against the background of lush bushy varieties of clerodendrum, when forming a floristic composition, small indoor flowers will look interesting: phalaenopsis or dendrobium orchid, gloxinia with bell flowers, indoor violets of Saintpaulia, pelargonium geranium with large flowers, tuberous begonia, hibiscus Chinese.

♦ WHAT IS IMPORTANT!

Location and lighting.

The plant pot can be placed on a flower stand near a south-facing window. But in this case, be sure to shade the window panes a little, since due to direct sunlight on the plant, the leaves lose their tone and turn yellow. Clerodendrum feels comfortable on the window sills facing the west and east sides of the room. FROM north side the plant will grow and develop normally, but the decorative value of the leaves may deteriorate slightly.

Temperature conditions.

Optimal temperature regime during the growing season - 17-27 ° C. Starting in November and throughout winter months it is necessary to keep the temperature in the range of 14-16 ° C so that during flowering flower buds are set, from which inflorescences will appear.

Air humidity.

The plant will grow and develop normally when high humidity air. If the room has a moderate humidity level (40-50%), be sure to spray the indoor clerodendrum with warm, settled water in the evening. During heating season do not place the pot next to a heating system. Several times a month, you can gently wipe the leaves with a damp sponge. During the summer heat, place the pot on a pallet with wet expanded clay (fill a three-centimeter layer with 2/3 water), and place a container with water next to the plant.

Watering.

Water the plant only warm water, stood for several days. Watering in summer - several times a day, draining all the flowing water from the sump. In winter, water sparingly (3-4 times a month) and very sparingly. The main thing is to prevent the earthen coma from drying out. In the spring and fall, water so that the top layer of the substrate is completely dry before the next watering.

Dredge and top dressing.

The substrate should be loose and moisture-consuming. An earthen mixture can be made independently by mixing peat, leafy soil, perlite and coarse sand in equal parts.

From mid-autumn and winter, clerodendrum does not need feeding. Fertilizers begin to be applied once every two weeks, from March to the end of September. For feeding, you can use special phosphorus-potassium fertilizers for vervains, both in liquid form and in crystals or granules. In addition to root dressing, you can spray the plant from a spray bottle with a solution of water with liquid fertilizers.

Transfer.

The top layer of the earth can be changed annually. And completely transplant clerodendrum into another clay pot - once every two years after the flowering period. choose a more spacious and higher pot, on the bottom of which you need to pour a 4 cm high expanded clay drainage layer.

Reproduction.

The best way to reproduce at home is by cuttings after pruning. Cut the semi-lignified cutting cut to 20 cm. Remove the lower leaves, and leave a few at the top. Treat the cut with a root stimulant. Now you need to deepen the stalk into the substrate (a mixture of peat and sand) to a depth of 3 cm and cover the container with a plastic bag. After a month or more, the cutting will take root.

There is one houseplant that was tamed by skilled botanists and still pleases us with its unusual flowering. It is about clerodendrum, it is he who is grown at home, getting a very original small tree or liana. In this article, our readers will be able to find out detailed information about this plant, its most popular types that can be seen in the photo, as well as how to care for it at home. Clerodendrum care requires specific, but not complicated. If you follow the rules described below, then you will not have to look for an answer to the question of why it does not bloom. We will reveal all the secrets of successful agricultural technology, but for now look at the photo different varieties and species: In fact, the name clerodendrum is directly related to the area where this tree is considered a plant that brings happiness. Today this housewife indoor flower is referred to as "innocent love" and it is believed that if he appears in the house, then its owner will definitely meet his soul mate in the near future. In old soviet encyclopedias this houseplant can be found under the name Volcameria.

Clerodendrum - perennial, belongs to the Verbenaceae family (Clerodendrum L.). Representatives of the genus Clerodendrum are evergreen or deciduous shrubs (many of them are climbing) and even trees. They grow mainly in the tropical part of Africa, Asia, South America.

Translated from Greek, the word "clerodendrum" is translated as "tree of fate" (kleros - fate, dendron - tree).

Some types of clerodendrum are attractive and very decorative, and therefore have become quite common in indoor floriculture.

I would like to talk about Thomson's clerodendrum (Clerodendrum thomsoniae). If this plant got into your house, then you will quickly make friends with it for many years. And it is not just words. Everything attracts in clerodendrum: large emerald leaves, very fast growth, and bright, long, unique flowering.

The leaves of Thomson's clerodendrum are dark green, emerald, rather large, oval-pointed. The leaf plate seems to be slightly convex, bumpy, as if slightly pulled together by veins, a little rough to the touch.

Clerodendrum grows very quickly and is able to grow vines up to 2 - 2.5 meters long in one growing season. Clerodendrum is naturally a very powerful vine. Shoots of Clerodendrum grow both day and night, and in summer, and even in winter. Therefore, he constantly has to pinch in order to somehow limit his irrepressible growth.

With constant pruning and pinching, the clerodendrum can be shaped into a huge “green pillow”. Or just let the shoots hang down, limiting their growth to a certain length, then you will have a gorgeous ampel plant... Clerodendrum vines do not have suction cups and cannot braid the wall like ivy, so the plant needs to be fixed to a support, for example, in the form of a ball, pyramid or ordinary ladder.

However, Thomson's clerodendrum impressed me the most with its flowering. Firstly, the flowering of Clerodendrum was quite long, from March to the end of July, for almost five months.

Secondly, the flowers of clerodendrum are collected in racemose inflorescences, they have an original shape in the form of inverted white cups, resembling bells or lanterns, inside which there is also a bright red center of the flower with stamens. Against the emerald background of leaves, the brushes of white lanterns with bright red flowers look very beautiful.

Thirdly, the color of clerodendrum flowers changes during flowering. The snow-white calyxes of the flowers first turn slightly pinkish, then lilac. The middle of the flower turns from bright red to dark cherry. If you look into the cup, it turns out that black seed nuts are ripening there that can germinate.

But it turns out that the flowering of the clerodendrum ends when the calyxes of the flowers begin to change their color. And cute lanterns are the usual protection for ripening clerodendrum seeds. But, all the same, it is beautiful.

Clerodendrum care

Soil for clerodendrum

Clerodendrum grows well in a classic earthy mix. The earthen mixture should be moderately nutritious, moisture-absorbing, and at the same time it is good to remove excess water, let air through to the roots. For transplanting an adult or planting a young clerodendrum, ready-made soil for indoor plants containing leafy earth, peat, sand, fine expanded clay or perlite is quite suitable.

At the bottom of the pot, do not forget to put a drainage layer about three centimeters high from expanded clay, clay shards, pebbles, pieces of foam. The correct choice of pot and the correct transplant is the key to the rapid growth of a healthy plant.

Clerodendrum transplant

I transplant clerodendrum in the summer, after flowering, once every two years. Sometimes I just replace the top layer of the earth. She refused a transplant in February for several reasons. And of course, main reason it was blooming. In order for clerodendrum to bloom, it needs pruning, and pruning and transplanting cannot be combined, since the roots are still damaged during transplantation, and you have to wait for the plant to grow back, and then only prune it.

Also, even if you make the usual transfer to a large pot, then the flowering time may also be postponed. Until the roots reach the sides of the pot, the plant will simply continue to grow.

Lighting for clerodendrum

Clerodendrum loves diffused light. Clerodendrum will be most comfortable on windows facing east or west. Morning and evening sun will not cause trouble in the form of leaf burns.

It will be hot on the southern windows in summer, the leaves will quickly turn yellow and wither. To avoid sunburn on the leaves, the plant will have to be set aside from direct sunlight or covered with tulle for the whole summer.

Clerodendrum is so unassuming that it grows quietly on the northern windows, only, perhaps, the leaves will become slightly smaller.

Watering the clerodendrum

Another striking trait about Clerodendrum is the way it loves water. Since Clerodendrum grows very quickly, it has a lot of leaves, and they are quite large, so the water evaporates from them very quickly. In the summer, you sometimes have to water two to three times a day. If you unwittingly miss watering, you look, and the leaves have already wilted completely. Regular watering and spraying quickly corrects the situation: in the morning you look, and the leaves are fresh again. Absolutely not a discouraging plant!

Watering clerodendrum is better with boiled or settled water at room temperature. Watering should be uniform, even plentiful in summer, in winter, during the dormant period, watering is significantly reduced compared to summer water consumption, but does not stop at all, since the growth of shoots in Clerodendrum does not stop even in winter. Do not allow the earthen coma to dry out. In winter, during the dormant period, it is permissible that the clerodendrum sheds part of the leaves due to a lack of light. If the clerodendrum has dropped the leaves, then watering should be minimal, just so that the roots do not die from drought.

In addition to watering, Clerodendrum is madly in love with moist air. Therefore, it is advisable to spray clerodendrum every day. Spraying not only moisturizes and purifies the air, but also reduces the air temperature in summer, creating more comfortable conditions.

While the clerodendrum is still small, once a week he can arrange water procedures in the bathroom with the help of a shower, having previously covered the soil in the pot with a film so as not to wash it out.

Over time, when the plant is already large, it is problematic to transfer it to the bathroom. therefore water procedures Clerodendrum can be performed once a month by gently wiping the leaves with a damp sponge.

To create constant air humidity, you can use a pallet with a moisture-absorbing material, for example, expanded clay. Expanded clay is poured into the pallet with a layer of 2-3 centimeters, 2/3 the layer is filled with water. The pot of clerodendrum is placed in this pallet. If the pallet is large, you can put several pots of plants in need of high humidity air.

Pruning clerodendrum

In February-March, pruning is carried out in order for the clerodendrum to bloom. Each year, the clerodendrum will have to do a thorough haircut, trimming the shoots to the point where they are practically lignified. An adult plant has shoots of about 40-50 centimeters in length. Watering is gradually increasing, young shoots with buds begin to grow from the leaf axils.

After flowering, the shoots of Clerodendrum continue to grow. Therefore, in the future, you will need another pinching or formative pruning of the clerodendrum. A clerodendrum bush is formed whenever the shoots stop growing and the leaves begin to turn yellow. Such pruning provokes the formation of new shoots.

Fertilizers for clerodendrum

In summer, leaves can be burned from direct sunlight.

Sometimes, if you water the clerodendrum with hard, unstable tap water, there may be chlorosis of the leaves. With chlorosis, the upper, young leaves begin to turn yellow.

Whitish spots on clerodendrum leaves can be due to spraying with hard water. The water droplets dry out, leaving lime deposits in their place.

Powdery mildew is possible from cold water and low air temperatures. This will be signaled white bloom on the leaves.

Problems with growing clerodendrum

Clerodendrum leaves wither and hang, they may fall off - insufficient air humidity, insufficient watering, heat air.

In autumn, the leaves turn yellow and fall off - this is normal in deciduous species of clerodendrum.

All clerodendrum leaves turn yellow in summer - it is very hot, the sun's rays burned the leaves, or the concentration of fertilizers is too strong.

The shoots are strongly stretched, the leaves become small - the clerodendrum does not have enough light, the room is warm.

Leaves, buds, flowers fall - strong draft, low air humidity, not enough nutrients in the ground ,.

Clerodendrum does not bloom - wintering is too warm, lack of pruning, lack of nutrients in the soil.

Beautiful clerodendrum (S. Speciosum) is an elegant compact shrub with oblong leaves that have an uneven mosaic-convex surface. The plant blooms with paniculate white-red inflorescences towering above the crown.

Description and habitat

Clerodendrum is a member of the Lamb family, or Lamiaceae.

Clerodendrons have tetrahedral stems and simple large leaves with a regular arrangement. Flowers, collected in paniculate or shield inflorescences, consist of 5 sepals, accrete like parted lips (2 above and 3 below). Some species of Volcameria have large white bracts, which, even after the flowers have faded, remain on the stems until the dormant period. Therefore, many people mistakenly believe that the plant continues to actively bloom.

In some varieties of Clerodendrum, flowers have elongated beautifully hanging stamens, which, in combination with large sepals, give the flower a resemblance to an exotic butterfly.

The plant blooms in early spring, and continues to bloom well until late autumn. The species diversity of the genus is very high, and among its representatives there are both deciduous and evergreen forms. The plant needs a short period of rest, during which deciduous forms shed their foliage. Under natural conditions, the length of lianas reaches 4 m, and the height of shrubs can exceed 2 m. They grow freely in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, on the Pacific Islands and Indian Oceanand some species even in Australia.

Caring for Clerodendrum at home

Amateur flower growers have recently successfully grown some varieties and types of the Tree of Destiny as houseplants... Subject to the simple requirements for temperature, lighting and humidity, Clerodendrum feels great in indoor conditions... The flower does not like movement, so immediately choose a permanent place for it. Do not transplant the plant unless absolutely necessary. And do not forget to carry out timely pruning and pinching of fast-growing shoots and stepchildren to form a beautiful crown.

Temperature

Choosing the correct temperature regime for Clerodendrum, be guided by the climatic indicators in its natural habitat. In summer, a comfortable temperature is approximately from + 23 ° С to +26 ° С, and in winter during the rest period - + 12 ° С - +14 ° С.

Watering and humidity

The Clerodendrum plant is a visitor from tropical rainforests. Therefore, the substrate inside the lawn should always be slightly damp and the top layer dry. Watering plants in summer period carried out on the basis of this recommendation, and during the rest period - reduced to 1 time per week. AT winter time it is recommended to spray the root part of the bush with softened, settled water at room temperature.

Soil requirements and fertilization

When choosing a substrate for Clerodendrum, you can use ordinary ready-made soil for indoor plants, or compose it yourself by mixing leafy soil, sand, peat and loam in equal proportions. Like everything is abundant flowering plants, Clerodendrum is very responsive to fertilizing, which, at the same time, should not lead to too active growth of the leaf mass. Usually, the Tree of Destiny is fed with liquid once every 10-12 days organic fertilizer and once a month - phosphorus-potassium mineral. With the onset of autumn, all types of dressings are stopped until spring.

Lighting

It is preferable to place the plant by a window with an east or west orientation, or by a slightly shaded south window. Lack of lighting is poorly tolerated by the plant. Therefore, if the question arises why your Clerodendrum is not blooming, first of all check if the plant is receiving enough light.

Transplant and reproduction

If your Clerodendrum is actively increasing its leaf mass and pleases you with abundant and long flowering, the plant is in the comfort zone and does not require transplanting. If you suspect that root system exhausted the reserves of nutrients in the substrate, or if the plant has grown excessively, and there is a likelihood of the pot tipping over, Clerodendrum is transplanted by transferring it into a more spacious pot, but no more than 2-4 cm larger than the previous one. The transplant time is the dormant period of the plant. The Tree of Destiny is propagated by the method of cuttings and seeds.

Diseases and pests

When improper care possible sunburn of plant leaves, and when watering hard tap water - chlorosis, expressed in a decrease in the intensity of color and yellowing of the leaves. Extremely cold water is also harmful to the Tree of Destiny. The plant is weakened and can get sick with powdery mildew.

Of pests worst enemies Clerodendrum are considered scale insects, whiteflies and spider mite... Spraying with bio-insecticide "Bona Forte", "Aktara", "Actellik" and others helps to combat scale insects. To get rid of spider mites and whiteflies, systemic preparations "Confidor" are recommended. "Akarin", "Fitoverm", etc., and from folk remedies - watering with infusion of onion and garlic.

Pruning Clerodendrum

Even after the end of the flowering phase, the shoots of the plant continue to actively grow. In order to stimulate flowering, the plant must be thoroughly trimmed to the point of lignification on the stems. Usually, in an adult plant, the length of the stems is not more than 40 cm. The pinching of the Clerodendrum is carried out during the entire vegetative period. It consists in removing stepchildren and limiting the growth of shoots.

Propagation by cuttings

To do this, the cut cuttings are germinated in a container with water and, when the roots grow 2-4 cm, they are planted in small pots with loose nutrient soil. For better rooting, the seedlings are covered with a film cover or glass jars.

Growing Clerodendrum from seeds

At the end of flowering, seeds are collected from the pollinated flowers of Clerodendrum, hidden under a bright orange dense growth - aryllus. The cleaned seeds are sown in moistened soil and covered with a film until shoots appear.

Every house has indoor plants that carry with them a variety of energies. Most types of flowers have a positive effect on our mood and health, so we try to surround ourselves with beautiful plants. The flower does not like sharp temperature fluctuations, therefore it is important to ensure the optimal temperature regime of +16 o +25 o C. In winter, the temperature should be even lower, for example, for Clerodendrum Thompson, home care in winter is most favorable at +12 o. During this period of time, buds are laid.

Clerodendrum is propagated seeds or cuttings... In cut form, they are placed in a container with water or immediately in a peat-sand mixture, covering them with a cap on top. Cuttings in water take root, after which they can be transplanted into a flowerpot.

Exotic vine care

The plant needs regular feeding. This is especially important during the flowering period. Scarcity mineral fertilizers can be identified by the drying tips of the leaves. Timely feeding ensures long flowering.

A flower is badly affected by a low level of humidity, Dry air has a detrimental effect on its development. The required moisture level can be ensured by regular spraying. You can also place expanded clay or moss in the pallet. Watering should be done regularly, but there should be no stagnation of moisture. Watering is necessary when the topsoil in the pot is slightly dry. Water for irrigation should be used only with standing water. In the cold season, watering should be reduced to 2 times a month.

You can not place a flower near heating appliances... It is advisable to feed the plant with complex agents 2 times a month.

Liana grows large, so it needs pruning to limit its growth. If there are wilted or withered branches, they should be removed during flowering or in winter when the flower is resting. It is believed that the most favorable time for pruning is spring. It is best to transplant the flower immediately after pruning. Flowering will largely depend on correct pruning... Experts recommend trimming twice a year.

Clerodendrum and its types
